RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a risk factor for suicide. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of NSSI and professional psychological help-seeking status and influencing factors among left-behind children (LBC) in China. METHODS: We implemented a population-based cross-sectional study in participants aged 10-18 years. Sociodemographic characteristics, NSSI, help-seeking status and coping style were measured by self-reported questionnaires. A total of 16,866 valid questionnaires were collected, including 6096 LBC. Binary logistic regression models were used to analyze the factors influencing NSSI and professional psychological help-seeking. RESULTS: The incidence of NSSI among LBC was 4.6%, significantly higher than that of non-left-behind children (NLBC). This incidence was higher among girls. Moreover, 53.9% of LBC with NSSI did not receive any treatment and only 22.0% sought professional psychological help. LBC often adopt emotion-oriented coping styles, specifically, those with NSSI. LBC with NSSI who seek professional help tend to adopt problem-oriented coping styles. Logistic regression analysis revealed that girls, learning stage, single-parent, remarried families, patience, and emotional venting were risk factors for NSSI in LBC, while problem-solving and social support seeking were protective factors. Moreover, problem-solving was also a predictor for seeking professional psychological help, patience will prevent it. LIMITATIONS: This was an online survey. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of NSSI in LBC is high. Gender, grade, family structure, and coping style affect the occurrence of NSSI among LBC. Only a few LBC with NSSI seek professional psychological help, while the coping style will affect the help-seeking behavior.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To observe the therapeutic effect of Qilin Pills (QLP) on oligoasthenospermia. METHODS: This prospective study included 168 patients diagnosed with oligozoospermia in our hospital between September 2015 and September 2017, and all of them failed to achieve pregnancy. We randomly divided them into a QLP group (n = 82) and a placebo control group (n = 86) to receive oral QLPs or placebo pills, respectively, both at 6 g tid for 6 months. We followed up the patients and recorded their routine semen parameters every month during the medication and the rate of pregnancy in their spouses. RESULTS: After 6 months of treatment, the QLP group, as compared with the placebo controls, showed significantly improved sperm concentration (25.13 ×106/ml vs 11.62 ×106/ml, P < 0.01), grade a+b sperm (33.81% vs 17.32%, P < 0.01), grade a sperm (22.84% vs 13.56%, P < 0.01) and sperm motility (56.33% vs 26.23%, P < 0.01); and 26 pregnancies were achieved in the QLP group (32.91%), remarkably more than 13 in the placebo control group (15.85%) (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Qilin Pills can effectively improve sperm quality and increase the rate of pregnancy.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of the serum testosterone level as an independent predictor of bone metastasis of prostate cancer. METHODS: This study included 165 male patients with prostate cancer confirmed by biopsy. The patients were aged 58-78 (66.6±5.3) years and none had received androgen-deprivation therapy, chemotherapy or radiotherapy previously. We obtained the baseline clinical data from the patients, including prostate biopsy Gleason scores and the levels of serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA), total testosterone (TT), luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), estradiol (E2), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and prolactin. According to the results of bone scanning, we divided the patients into a bone metastasis and a non-bone metastasis group and screened out the differential factors by univariate analysis and the independent predictor of bone metastasis using the multivariate non-conditional logistic regression model. RESULTS: Univariate analysis showed no statistically significant differences between the bone metastasis and non-bone metastasis groups in age (P = 0.126) or the levels of serum LH (P = 0.930), FSH (P = 0.763) and E2 (P = 0.256), but that the former had remarkably higher Gleason scores (P < 0.01), total PSA (P <0.01) and ALP (P <0.01) but a lower TT level than the latter (P = 0.013). According to the results of multivariate logistic regression analysis, serum ALP (P <0.01, OR = 1.018 ï¼»1.011-1.026ï¼½) and total PSA (P <0.01, OR = 1.029 ï¼»1.015-1.044ï¼½) could be regarded as independent predictors of bone metastasis of prostate cancer but not low serum TT (P = 0.531, OR = 0.999 ï¼»0.996-1.002ï¼½) or biopsy Gleason score (P = 0.898, OR = 0.787 ï¼»0.412-1.9559ï¼½). CONCLUSIONS: The low level of serum testosterone is closely associated with but not an independent predictor of bone metastasis of prostate cancer.

RESUMO

Development of the fetal hippocampal formation has been difficult to fully describe because of rapid changes in its shape during the fetal period. The aims of this study were to: (1) segment the fetal hippocampal formation using 7.0 T MR images from 41 specimens with gestational ages ranging from 14 to 22 weeks and (2) reveal the developmental course of the fetal hippocampal formation using volume and shape analyses. Differences in hemispheric volume were observed, with the right hippocampi being larger than the left. Absolute volume changes showed a linear increase, while relative volume changes demonstrated an inverted-U shape trend during this period. Together these exhibited a variable developmental rate among different regions of the fetal brain. Different sub-regional growth of the fetal hippocampal formation was specifically observed using shape analysis. The fetal hippocampal formation possessed a prominent medial-lateral bidirectional shape growth pattern during its rotation process. Our results provide additional insight into 3D hippocampal morphology in the assessment of fetal brain development and can be used as a reference for future hippocampal studies.

RESUMO

Morphological observation and measurements of endocasts have played a vital role in research on the evolution of the human brain. However, endocasts have never been used to investigate how the human brain has evolved since the Neolithic period. We investigated the evolution of the human brain during the Holocene by comparing virtual endocasts from Beiqian site (a Neolithic Chinese site) and a sample of Chinese modern-day humans. Standardized measurements and indices were taken to provide quantification of the overall endocast shape, including the length, breadth, height, frontal breadth, and the ratio of frontal breadth to breadth, as well as the cranial capacity. We found that the height of the endocasts and cranial capacity have decreased between our two samples, whereas the frontal breadth and sexual dimorphism have increased. We argue that these changes can be caused by random genetic mutation and epigenetic change in response to changes in the environment.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the value of serum D-dimer (D-D), fibrinogen (FIB), platelet (PLT), C-reactive protein (CRP) and tissue plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI)-1 levels in predicting lower extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after hip joint surgery in the elderly. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 165 elderly patients with hip joint surgery admitted from February 2020 to May 2022, including 89 males and 76 females, aged from 60 to 75 years old with an average of (66.43±5.48) years, and there were 102 cases of femoral neck fracture and 63 cases of femoral head necrosis. Serum levels of D-D, FIB, PLT, CRP and PAI-1 tests were performed in all patients within 24 hours after admission, and the patients were divided into DVT group and non-DVT group according to whether they developed DVT. RESULTS: The levels of D-D, FIB, PLT, CRP, and PAI-1 in the DVT group were higher than those in the non-DVT group (P<0.001). Spearman analysis showed that DVT was positively correlated with PLT, CRP, D-D, FIB, and PAI-1 levels (r=0.382, 0.213, 0.410, 0.310, 0.353, all P<0.001). The results of binary Logistic regression analysis showed that D-D and PLT were independent factors affecting the occurrence of DVT (OR=0.038, 0.960, P=0.032, 0.011). The area under curve (AUC) of D-D, FIB, PLT, CRP, PAI-1, and the five combined predictions for DVT were 0.843, 0.692, 0.871, 0.780, 0.819, and 0.960, respectively. The AUC of the five combined predictions was higher than that of the single prediction (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: D-D, FIB, PLT, CRP and PAI-1 are effective in predicting DVT after hip surgery in the elderly, and the combined prediction of the five factors has higher efficacy.

RESUMO

Functional neuroimaging studies have indicated the involvement of separate brain areas in three distinct attention systems: alerting, orienting, and executive control (EC). However, the structural correlates underlying attention remains unexplored. Here, we utilized graph theory to examine the neuroanatomical substrates of the three attention systems measured by attention network test (ANT) in 65 healthy subjects. White matter connectivity, assessed with diffusion tensor imaging deterministic tractography was modeled as a structural network comprising 90 nodes defined by the automated anatomical labeling (AAL) template. Linear regression analyses were conducted to explore the relationship between topological parameters and the three attentional effects. We found a significant positive correlation between EC function and global efficiency of the whole brain network. At the regional level, node-specific correlations were discovered between regional efficiency and all three ANT components, including dorsolateral superior frontal gyrus, thalamus and parahippocampal gyrus for EC, thalamus and inferior parietal gyrus for alerting, and paracentral lobule and inferior occipital gyrus for orienting. Our findings highlight the fundamental architecture of interregional structural connectivity involved in attention and could provide new insights into the anatomical basis underlying human behavior.

RESUMO

Attention deficits may present dysfunctions in any one or two components of attention (alerting, orienting, and executive control (EC)). However, these various forms of attention deficits generally have abnormal microstructure integrity of inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (IFOF). In this work, we aim to deeply explore: (1) associations between microstructure integrities of IFOF (including frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital, and insular segments) and attention by means of structural equation models and multiple regression analyses; (2) genetic/environmental effects on IFOF, attention, and their correlations using bivariate genetic analysis. EC function was attributed to the fractional anisotropy (FA) of left (correlation was driven by genetic and environmental factors) and right IFOF (correlation was driven by environmental factors), especially to left frontal part and right occipital part (correlation was driven by genetic factors). Alerting was associated with FA in parietal and insular parts of left IFOF. No significant correlation was found between orienting and IFOF. This study revealed the advantages of lobar-segmental analysis in structure-function correlation study and provided the anatomical basis for kinds of attention deficits. The common genetic/environmental factors implicated in the certain correlations suggested the common physiological mechanisms for two traits, which should promote the discovery of single-nucleotide polymorphisms affecting IFOF and attention.
