RESUMO

AIM: To explore the perceptions of nurses in an acute care setting on factors influencing the effectiveness of audit and feedback. BACKGROUND: Audit and feedback is widely used and recommended in nursing to promote evidence-based practice and to improve care quality. Yet the literature has shown a limited to modest effect at most. Audit and feedback will continue to be unreliable until we learn what influences its effectiveness. METHOD: A qualitative study was conducted using individual, semi-structured interviews with 14 registered nurses in an acute care teaching hospital in Montreal, Canada. RESULTS: Three themes were identified: the relevance of audit and feedback, particularly understanding the purpose of audit and feedback and the prioritisation of audit criteria; the audit and feedback process, including its timing and feedback characteristics; and individual factors, such as personality and perceived accountability. CONCLUSION: According to participants, they were likely to have a better response to audit and feedback when they perceived that it was relevant and that the process fitted their preferences. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: This study benefits nursing leaders and managers involved in quality improvement by providing a better understanding of nurses' perceptions on how best to use audit and feedback as a strategy to promote evidence-based practice.

RESUMO

The SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic has accelerated the development and use of digital health platforms to support individuals with health-related challenges. This is even more frequent in the field of cancer care as the global burden of the disease continues to increase every year. However, optimal implementation of these platforms into the clinical setting requires careful planning and collaboration. An implementation project was launched between the Centre intégré universitaire de santé et de services sociaux (CIUSSS) du Centre-Ouest-de-I'Île-de-Montreal and BELONG-Beating Cancer Together-a person-centred cancer navigation and support digital health platform. The goal of the project was to implement content and features specific to the CIUSSS, to be made available exclusively for individuals with cancer (and their caregivers) treated at the institution. Guided by Structural Model of Interprofessional Collaboration, we report on implementation processes involving diverse stakeholders including clinicians, hospital administrators, researchers and local community/patient representatives. Lessons learned include earlier identification of shared goals and clear expectations, more consistent reliance on virtual means to communicate among all involved, and patient/caregiver involvement in each step to ensure informed and shared decision making.

RESUMO

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: To explore how young adult patients with cancer experience "being known" by their healthcare team. RESEARCH APPROACH: Qualitative, descriptive. SETTING: A university-affiliated hospital in Montreal, Quebec. PARTICIPANTS: 13 patients with cancer aged 18-39 years. METHODOLOGIC APPROACH: Semistructured interviews were conducted and analyzed using thematic content analysis. FINDINGS: Living with cancer and being labeled as a young adult were described, and participants reported being known in relation to two themes. CONCLUSIONS: Being known was highly valued and was experienced and expressed in a unique way for each individual. However, the process often occurred from simple interventions related to the healthcare provider or the setting itself.
INTERPRETATION: Although no standardized tools can be used to facilitate being known, the current study sheds light on how being known may be achieved and can be helpful in meeting the needs of young adult patients with cancer.

RESUMO

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this article was to describe the collaborative model established between the specialized nurse practitioner (SNP) and the clinical nurse specialist (CNS), within the cardiac surgery population. BACKGROUND/RATIONALE: The literature has shown a trend that SNPs and CNSs work in parallel or even in competition. Little has been written about a collaborative model and the advantages to working together toward a mutual goal. It was felt that a collaborative model between advance practice nurses could demonstrate the advantages of using their unique perspectives to achieve improvement in the quality of care given to the patients. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT/INNOVATION: The Structuration Model of Interprofessional Collaboration was used as a guide to our interventions and elaboration of our project. The team set out to establish, promote, and nurture a collaborative approach to care for the cardiac surgery population from admission to 3 months after discharge. OUTCOMES: A collaborative relationship was achieved between the SNP and the CNS, to the benefit of the patient population. INTERPRETATION/CONCLUSION: Collaboration between these 2 advanced practice nurses is realistic and attainable. The advantages to this relationship outweigh the negative feelings harbored toward each professional title. By working in collaboration instead of in parallel, resources are pooled together to achieve greater services and care for the patients. IMPLICATIONS: A change in attitude between professionals has a positive impact on working relationships, partnerships, and communication. Ultimately, it is an advantage for the advanced practice nurse, the multidisciplinary team, and the patient.
