RESUMO

In this paper, a multifunctional device and a design method are proposed based on the vanadium dioxide (VO2)-assisted metamaterial structure. The structure comprises several layers arranged from top to bottom, including a VO2 patch layer, a polyimide (PI) dielectric layer, an elliptical metal layer, a VO2 thin film layer, another PI dielectric layer, and a bottom metal layer. The research results show that the metamaterial structure enables linear-to-linear (LTL) polarization conversion and linear-to-circular (LTC) polarization conversion across multiple frequency bands when the VO2 is in the insulating state. Moreover, as the VO2 material undergoes a transition from the insulating state to the metallic state, the multifunctional structure can function as a broadband absorber, exhibiting an absorption rate of over 90% within the frequency range of 1.751-3.853 THz, with a relative bandwidth of 75%. This versatile conversion device holds great potential for applications in terahertz system and smart system fields.

RESUMO

Ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) combined with acid pretreatment is usually employed to remediate contaminated soils containing Cr(VI). However, the long-term efficiency of this stabilization method is important for its sustainability. In this study, a gradient temperature-elevating exposure test was employed to investigate the stability of Cr in FeSO4-remediated soil when exposed to elevated temperatures (40 °C, 120 °C, and 500 °C), possibly caused by hot weather and/or wildfires. The results of chemical extraction and X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy (XANES) showed that the Cr(VI) in contaminated soil was successfully transformed to Cr(III) after stabilization, resulting in the dramatic decrease of water-leachable Cr(VI). The stabilization efficiency was further improved under 40 °C treatment after 30 days. Subsequently, the 120 °C treatment (7 days) had relatively little effect on the Cr speciation and mobility in soils. However, even one day of 500 °C calcination resulted in the deterioration of stabilization efficiency, and the water-leachable Cr(VI) re-increased and became higher than the Chinese environmental standards (total Cr 15 mg/L, Cr(VI) 5 mg/L) for the classification of hazardous solid wastes. XANES results reflected that heating at 500 °C facilitate the formation of Cr2O3, which was mainly caused by thermal decomposition and dehydration of Cr(OH)3 in the soil. Besides, the transformation of Cr species resulted in the enhanced association of Cr with the most stable residual fraction (88.3%-91.6%) in soil. Based on chemical extraction results, it was suggested that the oxidation of Cr(III) to Cr(VI) contributed to the re-increased mobility of Cr(VI) in soil. However, the XANES results showed that almost no significant re-oxidization of Cr(III) to Cr(VI) happened after heating at 500 °C, which was probably caused by XANES linear combination fits (LCF) uncertainties. Moreover, the changes in soil properties, including a rise in pH to a slightly alkaline range and/or the decomposition of organic matter, possibly contributed to the enhanced mobility of Cr(VI) in soil. This study contributes to clarifying the mobility and transformation of Cr in contaminated soils and provides a support for the sustainable management of remediated soils.

RESUMO

Microplastics (MPs)/nanoplastics (NPs) are widely found in the natural environment, including soil, water and the atmosphere, which are essential for human survival. In the recent years, there has been a growing concern about the potential impact of MPs/NPs on human health. Due to the increasing interest in this research and the limited number of studies related to the health effects of MPs/NPs on humans, it is necessary to conduct a systematic assessment and review of their potentially toxic effects on human organs and tissues. Humans can be exposed to microplastics through ingestion, inhalation and dermal contact, however, ingestion and inhalation are considered as the primary routes. The ingested MPs/NPs mainly consist of plastic particles with a particle size ranging from 0.1 to 1 µm, that distribute across various tissues and organs within the body, which in turn have a certain impact on the nine major systems of the human body, especially the digestive system and respiratory system, which are closely related to the intake pathway of MPs/NPs. The harmful effects caused by MPs/NPs primarily occur through potential toxic mechanisms such as induction of oxidative stress, generation of inflammatory responses, alteration of lipid metabolism or energy metabolism or expression of related functional factors. This review can help people to systematically understand the hazards of MPs/NPs and related toxicity mechanisms from the level of nine biological systems. It allows MPs/NPs pollution to be emphasized, and it is also hoped that research on their toxic effects will be strengthened in the future.

RESUMO

Although terahertz (THz) spectroscopy demonstrates great application prospects in the fields of fingerprint sensing and detection, traditional sensing schemes face unavoidable limitations in the analysis of trace-amount samples. In this Letter, a novel, to the best of our knowledge, absorption spectroscopy enhancement strategy based on a defect one-dimensional photonic crystal (1D-PC) structure is proposed to achieve strong wideband terahertz wave-matter interactions for trace-amount samples. Based on the Fabry-Pérot resonance effect, the local electric field in a thin-film sample can be boosted by changing the length of the photonic crystal defect cavity, so that the wideband signal of the sample fingerprint can be greatly enhanced. This method exhibits a great absorption enhancement factor, of about 55 times, in a wide terahertz frequency range, facilitating the identification of different samples, such as thin α-lactose films. The investigation reported in this Letter provides a new research idea for enhancing the wide terahertz absorption spectroscopy of trace samples.

RESUMO

A terahertz beam imaging method was proposed that involves scanning a reflecting echelon with temporal-spatial mapping inversion based on self-developed translation-scan and rotation-scan temporal-spatial mapping (TTSM and RTSM) algorithms. The beam characteristics of a terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) system, such as its size, shape, and energy distribution, were obtained. Besides the weak terahertz beam emitted from a TDS system, this scheme is also suitable for imaging large-size terahertz or laser beams in time-domain systems where existing beam imaging is impractical.

RESUMO

Research on the interaction between nanoscale materials and light holds significant scientific significance for the development of fields such as optoelectronic conversion and biosensing. The study of micro- and nano-optics has produced numerous outstanding research achievements by utilizing the dielectric optical coupling mechanism and plasmon effects to enhance the interaction between light and matter. These findings have demonstrated tremendous potential for applications in the field of molecular fingerprint sensing. This review focuses on a retrospective analysis of recent research studies in the enhancement of wide-band trace terahertz absorption spectroscopy. The physical mechanisms of using waveguide structures, dielectric metasurfaces/meta-gratings, and spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPs) to improve the interaction between light and trace-amount matters are introduced. The new approaches and methods for enhancing broad-band terahertz absorption spectroscopy of trace samples using microstructure designs are discussed. Additionally, we elucidate the scientific ideas and exploratory achievements in enhancing terahertz fingerprint spectroscopy detection. Finally, we provide an outlook on the research and development direction and potential practical applications of absorption spectroscopy enhancement detection.

RESUMO

The hormetic effect of rare earth elements (REEs) has been found in a variety of crops and has been promoting crop growth for decades. Spraying leaves with REEs can enhance the endocytosis of plant roots. The non-selectivity of endocytosis is conducive to the direct absorption of environmental pollutants. The hyperaccumulator Solanum nigrum L. (S. nigrum), as a plant with high biomass and heavy metal tolerance, is a good candidate for phytoremediation. La(III), as a typical light REE, also has an obvious hormetic effect on S. nigrum. At 10 µM La(III), the biomass of S. nigrum reached the maximum, which was 89% greater than the control, and La(III) concentration was much lower than the previously reported optimum of 56 µM for general plants. In the present study, enhanced endocytosis after foliar spraying of La(III) was firstly observed in the root cell of hyperaccumulation plants, and La(III) increased the biomass of S. nigrum by improving the photosynthetic system, and promoting nutrient uptake and root development. The antioxidant defense system improved by La(III) contributed to the tolerance of S. nigrum to heavy metals. Applying a reasonable range of La(III) is beneficial to improving S. nigrum growth and tolerance of heavy metals. Compared with spraying deionized water, the translocation factor and bioaccumulation factor value of S. nigrum to cadmium increased by 15% and 21% respectively when spraying 10 µM La(III). Our findings provide a reference for improving hyperaccumulator plant growth and biomass, which improves phytoremediation efficiency.

RESUMO

This study aims to investigate the water-leaching characteristics of heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) from historical Pb-Zn mine tailing of an abandoned tailing deposit in eastern China. Up-flow column and batch leaching tests were conducted at different liquid-to-solid (L/S) ratios to estimate the releases of HMs and investigate the controlling mechanisms. Calcite and silicate were the dominant minerals in the tailing and the HMs contents followed the order of Zn (2371 mg/kg) > Pb (2061 mg/kg) > Cu (109 mg/kg) > Cr (47.8 mg/kg) > As (15.9 mg/kg) > Cd (5.1 mg/kg). Moreover, considerable fractions of Pb, Zn, and Cd existed in the acid-soluble forms (41-47%). Column and batch leaching tests consistently showed that limited quantities (<0.002%) of HMs could be leached from this historical tailing. In particular, variations in column conditions (e.g., length, flow rate, and initial saturation) significantly affected the release fluxes from the columns but had a relatively limited effect on the leaching mechanisms. The estimated results of HM release suggested that the leaching process was predominantly solubility-controlled and the dissolution of Ca-bearing minerals (e.g., calcite) primarily controlled the release of HMs. The studied tailing had a limited impact on the quality of the surrounding aquatic environments because the water-leaching concentrations of HMs were generally lower than the Chinese standards for drinking water. Only for Pb, the leaching results in column tests were significantly lower than those in batch tests; whereas the results in column tests for other HMs were comparable to those in batch tests to a certain extent. Based on the column test results, the amounts of HMs potentially released from the abandoned tailing deposit (height, 10 m; footprint area, 30,000 m2; tailing dry density, 1.9 × 103 kg/m3) followed a decreasing order of Zn (4.2 × 105 kg) > Cu (2.3 × 104 kg) > Pb (1.4 × 104 kg) > Cr (2.3 × 104 kg) > Cd (1.6 × 103 kg) > As (1.2 × 103 kg) over the 75-year assessment period (corresponding to an L/S ratio of 10 L/kg with an annual precipitation of 1500 mm).

RESUMO

A multifunctional design based on vanadium dioxide (VO2) metamaterial structure is proposed. Broadband absorption, linear-to-linear (LTL) polarization conversion, linear-to-circular (LTC) polarization conversion, and total reflection can be achieved based on the insulator-to-metal transition (IMT) of VO2. When the VO2 is in the metallic state, the multifunctional structure can be used as a broadband absorber. The results show that the absorption rate exceeds 90% in the frequency band of 2.17 - 4.94 THz, and the bandwidth ratio is 77.8%. When VO2 is in the insulator state, for the incident terahertz waves with a polarization angle of 45°, the structure works as a polarization converter. In this case, LTC polarization conversion can be obtained in the frequency band of 0.1 - 3.5 THz, and LTL polarization conversion also can be obtained in the frequency band of 3.5 - 6 THz, especially in the 3.755 - 4.856 THz band that the polarization conversion rate is over 90%. For the incident terahertz waves with a polarization angle of 0°, the metamaterial structure can be used as a total reflector. Additionally, impacts of geometrical parameters, incidence angle and polarization angle on the operating characteristics have also been investigated. The designed switchable multifunctional metasurfaces are promising for a wide range of applications in advanced terahertz research and smart applications.

RESUMO

Graphene is a two-dimensional material with unique physical and chemical properties, whose excellent biocompatibility has also attracted widespread attention in the field of biosensing and medical detection. Graphene provides a novel solution for dramatically improving the sensitivity of terahertz metasurface sensors, since the electrical conductivity can be modified by contact with biomolecules. In this paper, a metal-graphene hybrid metasurface is proposed and demonstrated for high-sensitive nortriptyline sensing based on the plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) resonances. The π-π stacks between nortriptyline and graphene lead to an increase in the Fermi level of graphene and a decrease in the conductivity, thus enhancing the PIT resonance. Experimental results show that the peak-to-peak amplitude magnitude of the PIT window is enhanced up to 3.4-fold with 1 ng nortriptyline analyte, and the minimum detection limit is extended down to 0.1 ng. But no significant change is observed from the samples without graphene as a comparative experiment, which demonstrates that the presence of graphene greatly enhances the bonding to the drug molecules and improves the sensing sensitivity. This metasurface sensor has the advantages of high sensitivity, fast detection speed, label-free and steady properties, which has potential applications in the fields of trace molecular sensing and disease diagnosis.

RESUMO

Terahertz (THz) absorption spectroscopy is widely used for molecular label-free fingerprinting detection, but it is not capable of efficiently analyzing trace-amount sample materials. For improving the efficiency of terahertz absorptance spectroscopy detection, we propose a sensing strategy by treating the geometry sweeping spoof surface plasmon polariton (SSP) of the stretchable metasurface. For the first time, the geometry sweeping can be realized by dynamically stretching the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) flexible substrate, leading to the resonant frequency variation of the unit cell. This design provides a significant absorption enhancement factor about 270 times for a 0.1 µm lactose film in a broad terahertz band, enabling the unambiguous identification of different trace-amount samples. The designed method exhibits a novel solution for the enhancement of broad-band terahertz absorption spectroscopy and great application potential in the field of detecting trace-amount samples.

RESUMO

In this paper, a hybrid vanadium dioxide (VO2)-graphene-based bifunctional metamaterial is proposed. The realization of the different functions of perfect transmission and high absorption is based on the insulator-metal phase transition of VO2 material. The Fermi energy level of graphene can be treated to dynamically tune the absorption and transmission rates of the metamaterial structure. As a result, when VO2 is in the insulating state, the designed metamaterial can be used as a filter providing three adjustable passbands with center frequencies of 1.892 THz, 1.124 THz, and 0.94 THz, and the corresponding transmittances reach 93.11%, 98.62%, and 90.01%, respectively. The filter also shows good stopband characteristics and exhibits good sensing performance at the resonant frequencies of 1.992 THz and 2.276 THz. When VO2 is in metal state, the metamaterial structure acts as a double-band absorber, with three absorption peaks (>90%) in the range of 0.684 THz to 0.924 THz, 2.86 THz to 3.04 THz, and 3.28 THz to 3.372 THz, respectively. The designed structure is insensitive to the polarization of vertically incident terahertz waves and still maintains good absorption performances over a large range of incidence angles. Finally, the effects of geometric parameters on the absorption and transmission properties of the hybrid bifunctional metamaterials have also been discussed. The switchable metamaterial structures proposed in this paper provide great potential in terahertz application fields, such as filtering, smart sensing, switching, tunable absorbers, and so on.

RESUMO

In this paper, a novel, to the best of our knowledge, polymer-based negative curvature ring-core fiber (NC-RCF) is proposed and investigated. The hollow-core NC-RCF is composed of TOPAS as background material. The inner and outer negative curvature structure layers are connected to the annular area, and the orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes can propagate in the annular core. In the frequency region of 1.0-1.5 THz, the designed NC-RCF can stably transmit 82 OAM modes. Investigation results indicate that the effective refractive index differences between the corresponding HE and EH modes are above 10-4. The confinement losses of EH or HE modes are smaller than 10-8 d B/m, and the dispersion variations are lower than 0.31 ps/THz/cm. Effective mode areas are larger than 5.14m m 2. Additionally, the highest mode purity of all vector modes is 99.78%. In addition, modal birefringence, also known as the walk-off length, has also been discussed. All these operation performances indicate that the designed NC-RCF make contributions to the optical communication systems.

RESUMO

Fish ponds polluted by the black water of eucalyptus forests (formed by the complexation of eucalyptus tannins with Fe3+) have experienced fish deaths. However, the toxicity of the components of black water is still unclear. To study the acute toxicities of eucalyptus leachate tannins to fish, their changes in the presence of Fe3+, and the underlying mechanisms, the static bioassay test method was adopted for acute exposure testing of zebrafish. Zebrafish were exposed to three kinds of tannins, namely, tannic acid (TA), epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and tannins from fresh eucalyptus leaf leacheate (TFL), and to solutions of these tannins with different molar ratios of Fe3+, under both no-aeration and aeration conditions. The results showed that the 48 h LC50 values of TA, EGCG and TFL were respectively 92, 47, and 186 mg·L-1, under no aeration, and 171, 86, and 452 mg·L-1 under aeration. When Fe3+ at 2, 1, and 6 times the molar amount of tannin was added to LC100 solutions of TA, EGCG and TFL, zebrafish mortality in 24 h was reduced to 0-33%. Acute fish death in eucalyptus plantation areas is related to high concentrations of eucalyptus tannins in the water. However, with increasing dissolved oxygen and Fe3+ levels, the acute toxicity of tannins to fish can be reduced. Thus, the black water in eucalyptus plantation areas reflects a water quality phenomenon that reduces the acute toxicity of eucalyptus tannins to fish. The mechanism of tannin toxicity to fish may be related to the impairment of oxygen delivery by fish blood, but the mechanism needs further study. These results provide a scientific basis for the prevention and control of fish suffering from acute eucalyptus tannin poisoning in eucalyptus plantation areas and for the protection of water resources.

RESUMO

To dispose of the medical waste generated during the COVID-19 pandemic, a new type of mobile emergency incinerator (MEI) was used in Huoshenshan Hospital, Wuhan, China, and consequently, it produced a number of medical bottom ashs (MBAs). In this study, the characterization and environmental risk evaluation of these MBAs were conducted to evaluate the disposal effect of this MEI used during the pandemic. Three types of leaching tests, EN 12457-2, TCLP 1311, and HJ/T 299-2007, were compared to investigate the release behaviors of major and trace elements from these MBAs. Lack of detection of COVID-19 in MBAs showed that this mobile emergency incinerator could thoroughly eliminate the COVID-19 virus in medical wastes to avoid secondary transmission. The results indicated that the increasing usage of chlorinated disinfectants and physiological saline solutions resulted in high Cl contents in MBAs. In addition, the increasing usage of polypropylene (PP) products changed the chemical properties and compositions of MBAs, with Ca as the main element. The leachability investigation revealed that the main metals in leachates were Ca, Na and K, and the toxic heavy metals such as Zn, Pb, Cu, and Cr in MBAs were difficult to extract because of the high pH (>12) of these MBAs. This study could provide consultation for the treatment and management of MBAs produced from MEIs dealing with emergent infectious diseases such as COVID-19.

RESUMO

This study investigated the long-term leachability of antimony (Sb) in a smelting residue (39519 mg/kg) solidified/stabilized by reactive magnesia (MgO). Different dosages of MgO (0% as control, 2%, 5%, and 10% on a dry basis) were compared, and the long-term performance was evaluated by an accelerated exposure test consist of 20 consecutive leaching steps with simulated strong acid rain (SAR, HNO3: H2SO4 = 1:2, pH = 3.20) as the extractant. Notably, the MgO treatments efficiently reduced the Sb leachability. Compared to the original slag (8.3 mg/L), the leaching concentrations based on a Chinese standard HJ/T299-2007 were reduced by 58%, 79%, 85%, and 86% at MgO dosages of 0%, 2%, 5%, and 10%, respectively. Because the studied slag was rich in oxides like SiO2, CaO, and MgO, the hydration reactions probably happened during the aging processes with oxic water. It was inferred that the formed hydration products have a self-solidification/stabilization function to suppress the Sb leaching from the solid phase. The mineralogical characterization results proved that the hydrated Mg(OH)2 played an essential role in the decrease of Sb leachability. Besides, the MgO addition promoted the hydration of this smelting slag and formed new hydrate gels that immobilize Sb in this slag. Our results confirmed that MgO-amended slags were resistant to continuous SAR corrosion. Compared to the control, the dosage of 5% MgO could effectively reduce the cumulatively released Sb by 57%, with only 0.46% of total Sb could be leached. The decomposition of Mg(OH)2 and hydrate gels determined the re-release of Sb in a long term. Our work has demonstrated that reactive MgO amendment could be potentially selected as an effective strategy for the treatment of Sb-containing smelting residues in field conditions.

RESUMO

It is difficult for single-layer metal metasurfaces to excite in-plane component of magnetic dipole moment, so achieving giant intrinsic optical chirality remains challenging. Fortunately, displacement current in dielectric metasurfaces can form the in-plane magnetic moment which is not orthogonal to the electric dipole moment and forms intrinsic chirality. Here, we show a lossless all-silicon metasurface which achieves giant intrinsic chirality in terahertz band. The leaky waveguide mode in the chiral silicon pillars simultaneously excite the in-plane electric and magnetic dipole moments, which triggers the spin-selected backward electromagnetic radiation, and then realizes the chiral response. The theoretical value of circular dichroism in the transmission spectrum reaches 69.4%, and the measured one is 43%. Based on the photoconductivity effect of the silicon metasurface, we demonstrate optical modulation of the intrinsic chirality using near-infrared continuous wave. In addition, by arranging the two kinds of meta-atoms which are enantiomers, we show the spin-dependent and tunable near-field image display. This simple-prepared all-silicon metasurface provides a new idea for the design of terahertz chiral meta-devices, and it is expected to be applied in the fields of terahertz polarization imaging or spectral detection.

RESUMO

At present, most of the gradient metasurfaces used to construct surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs)/spoof SPPs (SSPs) couplers are usually compact metal antennas working under reflection and transmission. In reflection mode, meta-couplers link propagating waves and surface waves (SWs), and SWs will undergo significant scattering before coupling to an Eigen SPP in the target system. In transmission mode, metal meta-couplers will encounter complex multilayer designing at the microwave/terahertz region and metal absorption loss at optical frequencies. In this Letter, to the best of our knowledge, a novel design using dielectric gradient metasurfaces instead of metal metasurface couplers is proposed to excite broadband SSPs on the metal groove array. We demonstrate that the well-designed phase dielectric gradient metasurface converts the normal incident terahertz wave to the predetermined angle in the dielectric substrate and then excites the broadband SSPs with the transmission coupling between the dielectric meta-coupler and SSPs surface. This research may open up new avenues in simple and broadband plane dielectric meta-couplers for SSPs in ultra-thin and compact functional devices for versatile applications.

RESUMO

In this study, a modified fir barks (MFB) was prepared by mixing fir barks (FB) and white-rot fungi (Phanerodontia chrysosporium) under aerobic fermentation. The potential of MFB for Cd2+ adsorption was investigated by batch experiments combined with kinetic, isotherm, and thermodynamics analyses. The results revealed that the modification greatly increased the porous structures on the surfaces of fir barks and the surface area of MFB was much higher than that of FB. As a result, the adsorption capacity of Cd2+ on MFB (17.4 mg g-1) was more than two times higher than that on FB (7.2 mg g-1), and the adsorption of Cd2+ on MFB was controlled by physisorption and chemisorption. The immobilization of Cd by MFB in a contaminated agricultural soil was also investigated. The effect of MFB on the bioavailability of Cd was investigated using a leaching test (the European standard EN 12457-2) combined with a typical sequential extraction procedure (the community bureau of reference, BCR). The experimental results showed that the Cd leachability was reduced by 71% when the added MFB dosage was 30 mg g-1. Besides, the MFB amendment could transform Cd from unstable geochemical fractions into more stable fractions. In total, the MFB, as a chemical-free and eco-friendly material, could be potentially employed for in-situ remediation of Cd-contaminated agricultural soils.
