RESUMO

Advancing the field of photocatalysis requires the elucidation of structural properties that underpin the photocatalytic properties of promising materials. The focus of the present study is layered, Bi-rich bismuth oxyhalides, which are widely studied for photocatalytic applications yet poorly structurally understood, due to high levels of disorder, nano-sized domains, and the large number of structurally similar compounds. By connecting insights from multiple scattering techniques, utilizing electron-, X-ray- and neutron probes, the crystal phase of the synthesized materials is allocated as layered Bi24O31X10 (X = Cl, Br), albeit with significant deviation from the reported 3D crystalline model. The materials comprise anisotropic platelet-shaped crystalline domains, exhibiting significant in-plane ordering in two dimensions but disorder and an ultra-thin morphology in the layer stacking direction. Increased synthesis pH tailored larger, more ordered crystalline domains, leading to longer excited state lifetimes determined via femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (fs-TAS). Although this likely contributes to improved photocatalytic properties, assessed via the photooxidation of benzylamine, increasing the overall surface area facilitated the most significant improvement in photocatalytic performance. This study, therefore, enabled both phase allocation and a nuanced discussion of the structure-property relationship for complicated, ultra-thin photocatalysts.

RESUMO

We demonstrate a facile selective synthesis of phase-pure anatase, rutile, and brookite nanocrystal polymorphs of titania (TiO2) using a benign hydrothermal treatment of an industrial grade TiOSO4 precursor. Acetic acid (CH3COOH) is used for the synthesis of anatase, glycolic acid (HOCH2COOH) is used for rutile, and both glycolic acid and ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) are used for obtaining brookite. The detailed morphologies of the as-synthesized materials are determined from a combination of powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The anatase nanocrystals are terminated by low-energy {101} facets and a small amount of high-energy {001} facets, whereas the rutile nanocrystals are terminated by low-energy {110} facets and a small amount of high-energy {111} facets. The brookite nanocrystals are terminated by low-energy {210} facets and {111} facets, and not the high-energy {101} and {201} facets erroneously reported in the literature. The activities of as-synthesized TiO2 nanocrystals as supports for vanadia-titania catalysts are investigated by measuring the selective catalytic reduction of NO using ammonia (NH3-SCR). The O2-activated samples show similar oxidovanadium(V) bands in their Raman spectra, and the relative activity relation is found to be anatase > brookite > rutile. In addition, the photocatalytic activity is evaluated by measuring the decomposition of Rhodamine B (RhB) under UV-light irradiation, and the relative activity order is found to be P25 > anatase ≈ rutile > brookite.

RESUMO

The selective oxidation of primary alcohols to aldehydes by O2 instead of stoichiometric oxidants (for example, MnVII , CrVI , and OsIV ) is an important but challenging process. Most heterogeneous catalytic systems (thermal and photocatalysis) require noble metals or harsh reaction conditions. Here we show that the Bi24 O31 Br10 (OH)δ photocatalyst is very efficient in the selective oxidation of a series of aliphatic (carbon chain from C1 to C10 ) and aromatic alcohols to their corresponding aldehydes/ketones under visible-light irradiation in air at room temperature, which would be challenging for conventional thermal and light-driven processes. High quantum efficiencies (71 % and 55 % under 410 and 450 nm irradiation) are reached in a representative reaction, the oxidation of isopropanol. We propose that the outstanding performance of the Bi24 O31 Br10 (OH)δ photocatalyst is associated with basic surface sites and active lattice oxygen that boost the dehydrogenation step in the photo-oxidation of alcohols.

RESUMO

Nanozymes, nanoparticles that mimic the natural activity of enzymes, are intriguing academically and are important in the context of the Origin of Life. However, current nanozymes offer mimicry of a narrow range of mammalian enzymes, near-exclusively performing redox reactions. We present an unexpected discovery of non-proteinaceous enzymes based on metals, metal oxides, 1D/2D-materials, and non-metallic nanomaterials. The specific novelty of these findings lies in the identification of nanozymes with apparent mimicry of diverse mammalian enzymes, including unique pan-glycosidases. Further novelty lies in the identification of the substrate scope for the lead candidates, specifically in the context of bioconversion of glucuronides, that is, human metabolites and privileged prodrugs in the field of enzyme-prodrug therapies. Lastly, nanozymes are employed for conversion of glucuronide prodrugs into marketed anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agents, as well as "nanozyme prodrug therapy" to mediate antibacterial measures.

RESUMO

Photocatalytic organic conversions involving a hydrogen transfer (HT) step have attracted much attention, but the efficiency and selectivity under visible light irradiation still needs to be significantly enhanced. Here we have developed a noble metal-free, basic-site engineered bismuth oxybromide [Bi24O31Br10(OH)δ] that can accelerate the photocatalytic HT step in both reduction and oxidation reactions, i.e., nitrobenzene to azo/azoxybenzene, quinones to quinols, thiones to thiols, and alcohols to ketones under visible light irradiation and ambient conditions. Remarkably, quantum efficiencies of 42% and 32% for the nitrobenzene reduction can be reached under 410 and 450 nm irradiation, respectively. The Bi24O31Br10(OH)δ photocatalyst also exhibits excellent performance in up-scaling and stability under visible light and even solar irradiation, revealing economic potential for industrial applications.

RESUMO

[2,2]-Paracyclophane undergoes phase transitions at 45 and 60 K. Based on simultaneous Raman spectroscopy and inelastic neutron scattering experiments (12-70 K), it was shown that a twisting motion of the ethylene bridge perpendicular to the plane of the aromatic rings drives the phase transition. The low-temperature (<45 K) and high-temperature (>60 K) conformers only differ by this twisting motion, which freezes out below 45 K and is thermally averaged above 60 K. Between 45 and 60 K, the system gains energy until the phase transition is complete.

RESUMO

Four transition metal formate coordination polymers with anionic frameworks, namely, Na[Mn(HCOO)3], K[Mn(HCOO)3], Na2[Cu3(HCOO)8], and K2[Cu5(HCOO)12], were synthesized using a mild solution chemistry approach. Multitemperature single-crystal (100-300 K) and powder X-ray diffraction studies of the compounds reveal structures of large diversity ranging from cubic chiral Na-Mn formate to triclinic Na-Cu formate. The structural variety is caused by the nature of the transition metals, the alkali metal ion templation, and the versatility of the formate group, which offers metal-metal coordination through three different O-C-O bridging modes (syn-syn, syn-anti, anti-anti) in addition to metal-metal bridging via a single oxygen atom. The two manganese(II) compounds contain mononuclear, octahedrally coordinated moieties, but the three-dimensional connectivity between the manganese octahedra is very different in the two structures. The two copper frameworks, in contrast, consist of binuclear and mononuclear moieties (Na-Cu formate) and trinuclear and mononuclear moieties (K-Cu formate), respectively. Procrystal electron density analysis of the compounds indicates one-dimensional K(+)-ion conductivity in K-Mn and K-Cu, and the nature of the proposed potassium ion migration is compared with results from similar analysis on known Na(+) and K(+) ion conductors. K-Mn and Na-Mn were tested as cathode materials, but this resulted in poor reversibility due to low conductivity or structural collapse. The magnetic properties of the compounds were studied by vibrating sample magnetometric measurements, and their thermal stabilities were determined by thermogravimetric analysis and differential thermal analysis. Despite structural differences, the metal formates that contain the same transition metal have similar magnetic properties and thermal decomposition pathways, that is, the nature of the transition metal controls the compound properties.

RESUMO

Carbon nitrides that expose atomically dispersed single-atom metals in the form of M-N-C (M = metal) sites are attractive earth-abundant catalyst materials that have been demonstrated in electrocatalytic conversion reactions. The catalytic performance is determined by the abundance of N-doped sites and the type of metal coordination to N, but challenges remain to synthesize pristine carbon nitrides with a high concentration of the most active sites and prepare homogeneously doped materials that allow for in-depth characterization of the M-N-C sites and quantitative evaluation of their catalytic performance. Herein, we have synthesized and characterized a well-defined monolayer carbon nitride phase on a Au(111) surface that exposes an exceedingly high concentration of Co-N4 sites. The crystalline monolayer carbon nitride, whose formation is controlled by an on-surface reaction between Co atoms and melamine on Au(111), is characterized by a dense array of 4- and 6-fold N-terminated pockets, whereof only the 4-fold pocket is found to be holding Co atoms. Through detailed characterization using scanning tunneling microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory modeling, we determine the atomic structure and chemical state of the carbon nitride network. Furthermore, we show that the monolayer carbon nitride structure is stable and reactive toward the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline electrolyte, with a quantitative performance metric that significantly exceeds comparable M-N-C-based catalyst types. The work demonstrates that high-density active catalytic sites can be created using common precursor materials, and the formed networks themselves offer an excellent platform for onward studies addressing the characteristics of M-N-C sites.

RESUMO

The formation and growth mechanisms in the hydrothermal synthesis of SnO(2) nanoparticles from aqueous solutions of SnCl(4)·5H(2)O have been elucidated by means of in situ X-ray total scattering (PDF) measurements. The analysis of the data reveals that when the tin(IV) chloride precursor is dissolved, chloride ions and water coordinate octahedrally to tin(IV), forming aquachlorotin(IV) complexes of the form [SnCl(x)(H(2)O)(6-x)]((4-x)+) as well as hexaaquatin(IV) complexes [Sn(H(2)O)(6-y)(OH)(y)]((4-y)+). Upon heating, ellipsoidal SnO(2) nanoparticles are formed uniquely from hexaaquatin(IV). The nanoparticle size and morphology (aspect ratio) are dependent on both the reaction temperature and the precursor concentration, and particles as small as ~2 nm can be synthesized. Analysis of the growth curves shows that Ostwald ripening only takes place above 200 °C, and in general the growth is limited by diffusion of precursor species to the growing particle. The c-parameter in the tetragonal lattice is observed to expand up to 0.5% for particle sizes down to 2-3 nm as compared to the bulk value. SnO(2) nanoparticles below 3-4 nm do not form in the bulk rutile structure, but as an orthorhombic structural modification, which previously has only been reported at pressures above 5 GPa. Thus, adjustment of the synthesis temperature and precursor concentration not only allows control over nanoparticle size and morphology but also the structure.

RESUMO

In this study, a facile microwave-assisted synthesis approach was used to produce a series of bismuth oxyhalide photocatalysts, with systematic changes in synthesis pH between 1 and 14 allowing control over a broad range of material properties and characteristics. Detailed structural and morphological investigations with powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Rietveld refinements, pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) show that thin particles of BiOCl, BiOBr, Bi24O31Cl10, and Bi24O31Br10 were selectively produced, with progressive changes in morphology, facet dominance, and phase as a function of pH. The impact of these changes on photocatalytic performance was evaluated by studying the aerobic oxidation of benzylamine to N-benzylidenebenzylamine, with all materials exhibiting photocatalytic abilities under UV or blue light. While a combination of material properties and characteristics influenced the photocatalytic performance, certain factors such as surface area, facet dominance, amorphous content, and band gap were found to have a larger impact on the photocatalytic yield. Overall, this study demonstrates the possibilities of phase, morphology, and performance of bismuth oxyhalide photocatalysts over the entire pH range, produced using a fast and facile microwave-assisted synthesis technique as an alternative to the more widely applied hydrothermal synthesis approach. Additionally, the detailed structural and morphological investigations of the materials contribute to a greater understanding of bismuth oxyhalide photocatalysts in general, while also highlighting some of the most desirable properties for improved photocatalytic performance of these materials.

RESUMO

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can serve as precursors for new nanomaterials via thermal decomposition. Such MOF-derived nanomaterials (MDNs) are often comprised of metal and/or metal oxide particles embedded on porous carbon. The morphology of MDNs is similar to that of the precursor MOF, and improved stability and catalytic properties have been demonstrated. However, the pathway from MOF to MDN is only well understood for a few systems, and in situ studies are needed to elucidate the full phase behaviour and time/temperature dependency. In this work, we follow the MOF-to-MDN transformation in situ by using three complementary techniques: X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and X-ray total scattering/pair distribution function (TS/PDF) analysis. The thermal decomposition of HKUST-1, i.e. the archetypical MOF Cu3(btc = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate)2, is followed from room temperature to 500 °C by applying different heating ramps. Real space correlations are followed by PDF and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis, and quantitative phase fractions are obtained by refinement of PXRD and PDF data, and by linear combination analysis (LCA) of X-ray absorption near edge Structure (XANES) data. We find that HKUST-1 decomposes at 300-325 °C into copper(I) oxide and metallic copper. Above 350-470 °C, metal particles remain as the only copper species. There is an overall good agreement between all three techniques with respect to the phase evolution, and the study paves the road towards rational synthesis of a Cu2O/Cu/carbon material with the desired metal/metal oxide composition. More importantly, our investigations serve as a benchmark study demonstrating that this methodology is generally applicable for studying the thermal decomposition of MOFs.

RESUMO

Controlled bottom-up synthesis of amorphous coordination polymers with tailored metal coordination is a research field in its infancy. In this study, synthesis control was achieved to selectively prepare one-dimensional (1D) crystalline and amorphous zinc(ii)-based coordination polymers and a dimeric molecular compound, all with similar coordination geometry as evidenced by X-ray diffraction and total scattering studies. The compounds were obtained by bottom up self-assembly of Zn(ii) with terephthalate (tph2-) as linker and the enantiopure chelating ligand S-(1,2)-bis(1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)ethanol (L). The solvent and the coordination ability of the precursor zinc salt anion control the crystalline products formed by slow diffusion at room temperature: perchlorate allows isolation of the phase pure crystalline 1D polymer {[Zn(tph)(L)]·H2O·3DMF}n (1·H2O·3DMF, DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide). In contrast, zinc chloride leads to the formation of either a mixture of polymeric 1·H2O·3DMF and a dimeric molecular species [Zn2Cl2(tph)(L)2]·4DMF (2·4DMF), or to the phase pure dimer 2·4DMF, depending on the Zn(ii) : tphH2 stoichiometry. A modified synthesis using zinc nitrate and fast precipitation by base addition results in an amorphous analogue of the 1D polymer (3). Chains of 1·H2O·3DMF pack into a non-porous crystalline material with a surface area of just 6 m2 g-1, while the outer surface area of amorphous polymer 3 is a factor of eight larger. Hence, the amorphous compound provides larger metal site accessibility for potential surface chemical reactions, while maintaining the coordination geometry of the metal sites. The temperature response of crystalline polymer 1·H2O·3DMF was studied using multi-temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction (100-300 K). The a = b axes display normal positive thermal expansion, while the c axis remains constant with increasing temperature due to partial relaxation of the terephthalate linkers and slightly changed geometry within the individual polymer chains.

RESUMO

We present the synthesis, crystal structures and optical properties of three thiostannates prepared by using 1-(2-aminoethyl)piperazine (AEPz) as structure directing agent. Two of the thiostannates are layered materials (AEPz-SnS-1 and AEPz:EtOH-SnS-1) consisting of [Sn3S72-]n sheets with organic cations located in-between. The third compound is a molecular thiostannate (Sn2S6(AEPzH2)2) composed of dimeric Sn2S64- and AEPzH22+. In preparation of the layered compounds, the use of AEPz as the only solvent results in AEPz-SnS-1 with regular hexagonal pores and crystallographically disordered organic cations. In contrast, a mixture of AEPz and absolute ethanol gives AEPz:EtOH-SnS-1 with distorted hexagonal pores and ordered cations between the layers. The influence of cation order on the light absorption properties and the material thermal stability was investigated through thermal treatment of the layered compounds up to 200 °C. Both compounds show colour changes when heated, but cation order results in larger thermal stability. For AEPz-SnS-1, a decreased inter-layer distance and substantial loss of organic matter was observed when heated. However, pair distribution function analysis reveals that the local in-layer thiostannate structure of AEPz-SnS-1 remains unchanged. In contrast, AEPz:EtOH-SnS-1 does not undergo noticeable structural changes by the thermal treatment. All materials are optical semiconductors with band gaps of 3.0-3.1 eV.

RESUMO

Nano- and micromotors are self-navigating particles that gain locomotion using fuel from the environment or external power sources to outperform Brownian motion. Herein, motors that make use of surface polymerization of hydroxyethylmethylacrylate to gain locomotion are reported, synthetically mimicking microorganisms' way of propulsion. These motors have enhanced Brownian motion with effective diffusion coefficients up to ∼0.5 µm2 s-1 when mesoporous Janus particles are used. Finally, indication of swarming is observed when high numbers of motors homogenously coated with atom-transfer radical polymerization initiators are used, while high-density Janus motors lost their ability to exhibit enhanced Brownian motion. This report illustrates an alternative route to self-propelled particles, employing a polymerization process that has the potential to be applied for various purposes benefiting from the tool box of modern polymer chemistry.

RESUMO

Spinels are of essential interest in the solid-state sciences with numerous important materials adopting this crystal structure. One defining feature of spinel compounds is their ability to accommodate a high degree of tailorable point defects, and this significantly influences their physical properties. Standard defect models of spinels often only consider metal atom inversion between octahedral and tetrahedral sites, thereby neglecting other defects such as interstitial atoms. In addition, most studies rely on a single structural characterization technique, and this may bias the result and give uncertainty about the correct crystal structure. Here we explore the virtues of multi-technique investigations to limit method and model bias. We have used Pair Distribution Function analysis, Rietveld refinement and Maximum Entropy Method analysis of Powder X-ray Diffraction data, Zn edge Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure, and solid-state 27Al Nuclear Magnetic Resonance to study the structural defects in ZnAl2O4 spinel samples prepared by either microwave hydrothermal synthesis, supercritical flow synthesis, or spark plasma sintering. In addition, the samples were subjected to thermal post treatments. The study demonstrates that numerous synthesis dependent defects are present and that the different synthesis pathways allow for defect tailoring within the ZnAl2O4 structure. This suggests a pathway forward for optimization of the physical properties of spinel materials.

RESUMO

A series of semicrystalline and amorphous one-dimensional (1D) polymeric chains consisting of cubane-like CoII4L4 units (L = S-1,2-bis(benzimidazol-2-yl)ethanol) and dicarboxylates were synthesized and characterized by single crystal diffraction and X-ray total scattering. The polycationic chains are composed of [Co4L4(dicarboxylate)]2+ monomeric units, while one molecular dicarboxylate counterion is balancing the charge of each monomer. The linear compound series has five members, and the crystal structures were solved for [Co4L4(tph)](tph) and [Co4L4(ndc)](ndc), where tph = terephthalate and ndc = 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylate. Partly crystalline compounds were produced by slow assembly at elevated temperature (over days), while the amorphous compounds were formed by fast precipitation (within minutes). Pair distribution function (PDF) analysis based on X-ray total scattering data reveals the presence of the cubane-like entity in both the amorphous and semicrystalline samples. While the powders are non-porous, precipitation is a fast and versatile method to produce compounds with cubane-like centres with moderate surface areas of 17-49 m2 g-1 allowing for surface chemical reactions. The powders have a high concentration of Lewis base sites as verified by their selective adsorption of CO2 over N2. The use of an amorphous cubane-like polymer for the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction was demonstrated.

RESUMO

Boehmite (AlOOH) nanoparticles have been synthesized in subcritical (300 bar, 350 degrees C) and supercritical (300 bar, 400 degrees C) water. The formation and growth of AlOOH nanoparticles were studied in situ by small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS and WAXS) using 80 keV synchrotron radiation. The SAXS/WAXS data were measured simultaneously with a time resolution greater than 10 s and revealed the initial nucleation of amorphous particles takes place within 10 s with subsequent crystallization after 30 s. No diffraction signals were observed from Al(OH)(3) within the time resolution of the experiment, which shows that the dehydration step of the reaction is fast and the hydrolysis step rate-determining. The sizes of the crystalline particles were determined as a function of time. The overall size evolution patterns are similar in sub- and supercritical water, but the growth is faster and the final particle size larger under supercritical conditions. After approximately 5 min, the rate of particle growth decreases in both sub- and supercritical water. Heating of the boehmite nanoparticle suspension allowed an in situ X-ray investigation of the phase transformation of boehmite to aluminium oxide. Under the wet conditions used in this work, the transition starts at 530 degrees C and gives a two-phase product of hydrated and non-hydrated aluminium oxide.

RESUMO

Owing to their combined open-framework structures and semiconducting properties, two-dimensional thio-stannates show great potential for catalytic and sensing applications. One such class of crystalline materials consists of porous polymeric [Sn3S7 2-] n sheets with molecular cations embedded in-between. The compounds are denoted R-SnS-1, where R is the cation. Dependent on the cation, some R-SnS-1 thio-stannates transition into amorphous phases upon dispersion in water. Knowledge about the fundamental chemical properties of the thio-stannates, including their water stability and the nature of the amorphous products, has not yet been established. This paper presents a time-resolved study of the transition from the crystalline to the amorphous phase of two violet-light absorbing thio-stannates, i.e. AEPz-SnS-1 [AEPz = 1-(2-amino-ethyl)-piperazine] and trenH-SnS-1 [tren = tris-(2-amino-ethyl)-amine]. X-ray total scattering data and pair distribution function analysis reveal no change in the local intralayer coordination during the amorphization. However, a rapid decrease in the crystalline domain sizes upon suspension in water is demonstrated. Although scanning electron microscopy shows no significant decrease of the micrometre-sized particles, transmission electron microscopy reveals the formation of small particles (∼200-400 nm) in addition to the larger particles. The amorphization is associated with disorder of the thio-stannate nanosheet stacking. For example, an average decrease in the interlayer distance (from 19.0 to 15.6 Å) is connected to the substantial loss of the organic components as shown by elemental analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Despite the structural changes, the light absorption properties of the amorphisized R-SnS-1 compounds remain intact, which is encouraging for future water-based applications of such materials.
