RESUMO

Our novel strategy for the rational design of immobilized derivatives (RDID) is directed to predict the behavior of the protein immobilized derivative before its synthesis, by the usage of mathematic algorithms and bioinformatics tools. However, this approach needs to be validated for each target enzyme. The objective of this work was to validate the RDID strategy for covalent immobilization of the enzyme laccase from Trametes maxima MUCL 44155 on glyoxyl- and monoaminoethyl-N-aminoethyl (MANA)-Sepharose CL 4B supports. Protein surface clusters, more probable configurations of the protein-supports systems at immobilization pHs, immobilized enzyme activity, and protein load were predicted by RDID1.0 software. Afterward, immobilization was performed and predictions were experimentally confirmed. As a result, the laccase-MANA-Sepharose CL 4B immobilized derivative is better than laccase-glyoxyl-Sepharose CL 4B in predicted immobilized derivative activity (63.6% vs. 29.5%). Activity prediction was confirmed by an experimentally expressed enzymatic activity of 68%, using 2,6-dimethoxyphenol as substrate. Experimental maximum protein load matches the estimated value (11.2 ± 1.3 vs. 12.1 protein mg/support mL). The laccase-MANA-Sepharose CL 4B biocatalyst has a high specificity for the acid blue 62 colorant. The results obtained in this work suggest the possibility of using this biocatalyst for wastewater treatment.

The use of biosurfactants in bioremediation of hydrocarbons and in the removal of heavy metals in crude oils is considered an attractive subject. The vanadium pollution in soil and sediments had attracted research interest in exploring eco-friendly methods of remediation. The present study was conducted to evaluate the potential of a biosurfactant to remove vanadium from artificially contaminated sand. The biosurfactant producer's strain selection process was carried out from 23 strains in two steps. In the primary screening, four preliminary tests were carried out: the emulsification index (24 and 72 h), the surface tension, and the rate of bacterial adhesion to hydrocarbons. In the secondary screening, the surface tension and rhamnolipids concentration were determined, also critical micellar concentration and dilution were calculated. The RNA 16s of selected strain was sequence and the strain was identified as Pseudomonas sp. By chromatographic and spectroscopic assays, the structure of the rhamnolipids was determined. The maximal vanadium removal efficiency (85.5%) was achieved with a rhamnolipids' concentration of 240 mg l-1. The vanadium concentration was determined by spectroscopic technique. Rhamnolipids produced by this strain can potentially be used in the removal of vanadium.

AIMS: The purpose of this paper was to perform a bibliometric analysis of the production of qualitative research in scientific journals through aggregation by levels and to identify factors of diversity, such as types of designs, in qualitative research on the experience of having an intestinal stoma between 2002 and 2018. DESIGN: Descriptive bibliometric study focused on the production of qualitative research on the subject of study, on three levels: micro, meso and macro. METHODS: Databases such as PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Knowledge, Scopus, SciELO, CUIDEN, Lilacs and Google Scholar were used to collect the data, between August - November 2018. RESULTS: Nursing was the main area of knowledge. Brazil was the predominant country of origin. The most productive journal was the Journal of Wound, Ostomy & Continence Nursing. English and Portuguese were the main languages of scientific communication. The number of authors was typically between 2 and 6. Authors conducted descriptive and phenomenological studies. CONCLUSION: The present bibliometric study helps us to map the qualitative research on the experiences of individuals with an intestinal stoma and to understand patterns in the designs, methods, disciplines and journals involved in this area of research. This will allow nurses to have a leading contribution to stoma care at their disposal.

In the United States, 1.1 million persons are living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and approximately 37,800 new infections occur annually. Ending the HIV epidemic requires reducing HIV transmissions by 90% within the next 10 years and requires expanded HIV testing, antivirals for persons infected with HIV, and scale-up of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) to prevent new infections. Community pharmacies are widely accessible and employ highly trained health care professionals on-site who can initiate PrEP and PEP. Recommendations are offered to implement a community pharmacy PrEP program. Pharmacy, government, and HIV prevention leaders must be prepared to support and promote transformative changes, including (1) modification or expansion of existing state-specific scope of practice to initiate PrEP and PEP, (2) encouraging pharmacist education about PrEP and PEP, (3) identification and screening of candidates for PrEP eligibility, (4) incorporating pharmacy laboratory ordering and monitoring logistics, (5) adjusting workflow and ensuring confidential spaces for sensitive discussions, and (6) addressing reimbursement to maintain pharmacist-delivered PrEP and PEP programs. HIV disproportionately affects minority communities and younger individuals who may not be engaged in the health care system. Community pharmacies are accessible and can help increase PrEP use. Expansion of community pharmacy PrEP programs are needed to help end the HIV epidemic. Implementation of PrEP requires adaptation of the pharmacy profession to support incorporation of PrEP in a community pharmacy. Endorsement and support of community pharmacists are needed to implement PrEP to increase HIV prevention efforts and expand pharmacists' scope of practice.

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the design and implementation of a community pharmacy-initiated HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) program developed in collaboration with the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH). SETTING: A community pharmacy in San Francisco and the SFDPH developed a collaborative practice agreement (CPA) that allowed community pharmacists to initiate PrEP and PEP to prevent HIV acquisition and increase uptake in vulnerable populations. PRACTICE DESCRIPTION: A community pharmacy in San Francisco's Mission District, an urban, historically Hispanic/Latino/Latinx neighborhood. The primary collaborative practice team consisted of 1 community pharmacy technician, 4 community pharmacists, and 1 designated overseeing physician at SFDPH. PRACTICE INNOVATION: The pharmacy and the SFDPH collaborated together for 20 months from start to implementation of the CPA and the PrEP program. An interdisciplinary team of pharmacists, pharmacy personnel, public health physicians, and health department staff members worked together to design, launch, and maintain the program. Pharmacists were trained by SFDPH staff members on HIV testing and counseling and implementation of the PrEP protocol, including PEP initiation and sexually transmitted disease testing. A Department of Public Health secure portal was used to share patient information. An SFDPH physician reviewed patients' charts regularly and communicated with PrEP pharmacists as needed. RESULTS: Between April 2018 and the end of March 2019, 6 patients received PEP and 53 patients completed a PrEP initiation visit, of whom 96% (n = 51) filled their prescription. Approximately 47% (n = 24) of clients who started PrEP self-identified as Hispanic or Latino, 10% (n = 5) were black or African American, and 82% (n = 42) identified as men who have sex with men. CONCLUSION: Implementation of a CPA between a community pharmacy and a local health department enabled the launch of pharmacist-delivered PrEP, further expanding the landscape of access points to vulnerable populations in San Francisco.

The sunlight/H2O2 process has recently been considered as a sustainable alternative option compared to other solar driven advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in advanced treatment of municipal wastewater (WW) to be reused for crop irrigation. Accordingly, in this study sunlight/H2O2 was used as disinfection/oxidation treatment for urban WW treatment plant effluent in a compound parabolic collector photoreactor to assess subsequent cross-contamination of lettuce and soil by contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) (determined by QuEChERS extraction and LC-QqLIT-MS/MS analysis) and antibiotic resistant (AR) bacteria after irrigation with treated WW. Three CECs (carbamazepine (CBZ), flumequine (FLU), and thiabendazole (TBZ) at 100 µg L(-1)) and two AR bacterial strains (E. coli and E. faecalis, at 10(5) CFU mL(-1)) were spiked in real WW. A detection limit (DL) of 2 CFU mL(-1) was reached after 120 min of solar exposure for AR E. coli, while AR E. faecalis was more resistant to the disinfection process (240 min to reach DL). CBZ and TBZ were poorly removed after 90 min (12% and 50%, respectively) compared to FLU (94%). Lettuce was irrigated with treated WW for 5 weeks. CBZ and TBZ were accumulated in soil up to 472 ng g(-1) and 256 ng g(-1) and up-taken by lettuce up to 109 and 18 ng g(-1), respectively, when 90 min treated WW was used for irrigation; whereas no bacteria contamination was observed when the bacterial density in treated WW was below the DL. A proper treatment time (>90 min) should be guaranteed in order to avoid the transfer of pathogens from disinfected WW to irrigated crops and soil.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Early detection and grading of Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is essential to determine an adequate treatment and prevent severe vision loss. However, the manual analysis of fundus images is time consuming and DR screening programs are challenged by the availability of human graders. Current automatic approaches for DR grading attempt the joint detection of all signs at the same time. However, the classification can be optimized if red lesions and bright lesions are independently processed since the task gets divided and simplified. Furthermore, clinicians would greatly benefit from explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) to support the automatic model predictions, especially when the type of lesion is specified. As a novelty, we propose an end-to-end deep learning framework for automatic DR grading (5 severity degrees) based on separating the attention of the dark structures from the bright structures of the retina. As the main contribution, this approach allowed us to generate independent interpretable attention maps for red lesions, such as microaneurysms and hemorrhages, and bright lesions, such as hard exudates, while using image-level labels only. METHODS: Our approach is based on a novel attention mechanism which focuses separately on the dark and the bright structures of the retina by performing a previous image decomposition. This mechanism can be seen as a XAI approach which generates independent attention maps for red lesions and bright lesions. The framework includes an image quality assessment stage and deep learning-related techniques, such as data augmentation, transfer learning and fine-tuning. We used the architecture Xception as a feature extractor and the focal loss function to deal with data imbalance. RESULTS: The Kaggle DR detection dataset was used for method development and validation. The proposed approach achieved 83.7 % accuracy and a Quadratic Weighted Kappa of 0.78 to classify DR among 5 severity degrees, which outperforms several state-of-the-art approaches. Nevertheless, the main result of this work is the generated attention maps, which reveal the pathological regions on the image distinguishing the red lesions and the bright lesions. These maps provide explainability to the model predictions. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that our framework is effective to automatically grade DR. The separate attention approach has proven useful for optimizing the classification. On top of that, the obtained attention maps facilitate visual interpretation for clinicians. Therefore, the proposed method could be a diagnostic aid for the early detection and grading of DR.

In this study, the biodegradation properties of leather treated with various finishing chemicals were evaluated in order to enhance the sustainability of leather processing. We applied advanced analytical techniques, including FT-IR, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Leather samples treated with different polymers, resins, bio-based materials, and traditional finishing agents were subjected to a composting process under controlled conditions to measure their biodegradability. The findings revealed that bio-based polyurethane finishes and acrylic wax exhibited biodegradability, while traditional chemical finishes like isocyanate and nitrocellulose lacquer showed moderate biodegradation levels. The results indicated significant differences in the biodegradation rates and the impact on plant germination and growth. Some materials, such as black pigment, nitrocellulose lacquer and wax, were beneficial for plant growth, while others, such as polyurethane materials, had adverse effects. These results support the use of eco-friendly finishes to reduce the environmental footprint of leather production. Overall, this study underscores the importance of selecting sustainable finishing chemicals to promote eco-friendly leather-manufacturing practices.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of hypothermia and CyA on neuronal survival after induced injury in a neuronal model. METHODS: Human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells were seeded and allowed to grow. To determine whether lower temperatures protect from dopamine-induced apoptosis, cells were treated with dopamine at 100 µM, at 300 µM or without dopamine and incubated at 32 °C or 37 °C for 24 hours. To assess the effect of CyA, cells were pre-incubated with CyA at 37 °C and after dopamine was added. RESULTS: After 24 hours of incubation at 37 °C, 100 µM and 300 µM dopamine induced 42% (SD = 21) and 58% (SD = 7.9) apoptotic SH-SY5 cells, respectively. In cultures at 32 °C dopamine-induced apoptosis could be reversed by hypothermia [7% (SD = 1.4) and 3.45% (SD = 1.1) for 100 µM and 300 µM, respectively], similar to levels obtained in non-treated cells [2.4% (SD = 1.5)]. Cyclosporine A treatment did not render the expected result, since CyA-pre-treated cells and SH-SY5Y cells showed higher levels of apoptosis than those observed with dopamine alone CONCLUSIONS: Hypothermia has a marked protective effect against apoptotic cell death induced by dopamine in a human neuroblastic cell line. The neuroprotective effect of CyA described with other apoptotic cell death stimuli was not demonstrated with our experimental conditions.

BACKGROUND: Viruses are constantly changing as a result of mutations, and new viral variants are expected to appear over time. The virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, is not excluded from this condition. Patients with some types of immunodeficiency have been reported to experience symptoms that vary from mild to severe, or even death, after being infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. We report a case of a woman with severe hypogammaglobulinemia who developed a prolonged and fatal severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection. CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old mestizo female with a previous history of severe hypogammaglobulinemia manifested by recurrent pulmonary infections and follicular bronchiolitis. She received a monthly treatment of intravenous immunoglobulins and was admitted after report of a neurological manifestation related to a left thalamic inflammatory lesion, for a duration of 2 weeks of hospitalization, indicated for the study of her neurological condition, including brain biopsy. Both on admission and 1 week later, nasopharyngeal polymerase chain reaction tests for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 were performed and reported negative. In the third week of hospitalization, she developed pulmonary symptoms, and a positive test result for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 was evidenced. On Day 3, the patients' condition worsened as the infection progressed to respiratory failure and required mechanical ventilation. On Day 8 after the coronavirus disease 2019 diagnosis, the polymerase chain reaction test for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 showed persistent detection of the virus. Various bacterial coinfections, including Klebsiella pneumoniae and Enterobacter cloacae, were diagnosed and treated. On Day 35, her pulmonary symptoms worsened, and the results of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 polymerase chain reaction test remained positive. On Day 36, despite all the respiratory support, the patient died. The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 virus was sequenced at the beginning and 8 days after the onset of the disease, and the strain, without obvious mutations in the gene that encodes spike protein, was identified. CONCLUSIONS: This clinical case showed persistent severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 detection after 35 days of infection in a patient with severe hypogammaglobulinemia. The sequencing of the virus showed no mutations on the spike protein at 8 days, indicating that, in this case, the persistence of the viral detection was associated with immunodeficiency instead of changes in the viral components.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is a sleep disorder that is frequently associated with a large variety of conditions, such as hypertension, cardiovascular, neuropsychological or metabolic diseases. The most common and prominent symptoms of apnea is excessive diurnal drowsiness, as well asin addition to alterations of the memory and concentration, irritability, headache, and depression, among others. To date, no known studies have related OSAS with another type of more serious psychiatric disorder, such as psychotic symptoms. The case of a 51-year-old man who was diagnosed of SAOS after presenting psychotic and affective symptoms that did not respond to any medication is presentedreported. The treatment resulted in complete remission of the psychiatric symptoms mentioned.

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality (VR) is used as a distraction measure during painful clinical procedures associated with the use of needles. These procedures include vaccinations, blood draws, or the administration of medications, which can cause children to feel increased levels of pain and fear. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to collect and analyze the current evidence regarding the effectiveness of VR as a tool to distract children from pain and fear during needle procedures as compared to that of standard techniques. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed. We included randomized clinical trials (RCTs) or quasi-RCTs with participants younger than 21 years who underwent needle procedures in which the main distraction measure used was VR and where the main outcome measure was pain. The databases searched included the PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Cochrane libraries. In this systematic review, the studies were analyzed by applying the Critical Appraisal Skills Program guide in Spanish and the Jadad scale. In the meta-analysis, the effect size of the studies was analyzed based on the results for pain and fear in children. RESULTS: From 665 unique search results, 21 studies were included in this systematic review, most of which reported low methodological quality. The study sample cohorts ranged from a minimum of 15 participants to a maximum of 220 participants. Ten studies were included in the meta-analysis. The global effect of using VR as a distraction measure was a significant reduction in pain (inverse variance [IV] -2.37, 95% CI -3.20 to -1.54; Z=5.58; P<.001) and fear (IV -1.26, 95% CI -1.89 to -0.63; Z=3.92; P<.001) in children in the experimental groups. CONCLUSIONS: The quality of the studies was mostly low. The main limitations were the impossibility of blinding the participants and health care personnel to the VR intervention. Nonetheless, the use of VR as a distraction measure was effective in reducing pain and fear in children during procedures involving needles.

The movement restrictions put in place as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic required modification of the population's usual routines, including those of the most vulnerable groups such as patients with schizophrenia. This was a retrospective observational study. We used an online survey to collect information on patient adherence to the Mediterranean diet (Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener questionnaire), physical exercise (International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form), and tobacco consumption and levels of anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) before and during the movement restrictions. A total of 102 people with schizophrenia participated in this study. During the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown the participants significantly increased the number of minutes spent sitting per day (z = -6.73; p < 0.001), decreased the time they spent walking (z = -6.32; p < 0.001), and increased their tobacco consumption (X2 = 156.90; p < 0.001). These results were also accompanied by a significant increase in their reported levels of anxiety (z = -7.45; p < 0.001) and depression (z = -7.03, p < 0.001). No significant differences in patient diets during the pandemic compared to before the movement restrictions were reported. These results suggest the need to implement specific programs to improve lifestyle and reduce anxiety and depression during possible future pandemic situations.

BACKGROUND: Systemic mast cell activation disorders (MCADs) are characterized by severe and systemic mast cell (MC) mediators-related symptoms frequently associated with increased serum baseline tryptase (sBt). OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical, biological, and molecular characteristics of adult patients presenting with systemic MC activation symptoms/anaphylaxis in the absence of skin mastocytosis who showed clonal (c) versus nonclonal (nc) MCs and to provide indication criteria for bone marrow (BM) studies. METHODS: Eighty-three patients were studied. Patients showing clonal BM MCs were grouped into indolent systemic mastocytosis without skin lesions (ISMs(-); n = 48) and other c-MCADs (n = 3)-both with CD25(++) BM MCs and either positive mast/stem cell growth factor receptor gene (KIT) mutation or clonal human androgen receptor assay (HUMARA) tests-and nc-MCAD (CD25-negative BM MCs in the absence of KIT mutation; n = 32) and compared for their clinical, biological, and molecular characteristics. RESULTS: Most clonal patients (48/51; 94%) met the World Health Organization criteria for systemic mastocytosis and were classified as ISMs(-), whereas the other 3 c-MCAD and all nc-MCAD patients did not. In addition, although both patients with ISMs(-) and patients with nc-MCAD presented with idiopathic and allergen-induced anaphylaxis, the former showed a higher frequency of men, cardiovascular symptoms, and insect bite as a trigger, together with greater sBt. Based on a multivariate analysis, a highly efficient model to predict clonality before BM sampling was built that includes male sex (P = .01), presyncopal and/or syncopal episodes (P = .009) in the absence of urticaria and angioedema (P = .003), and sBt >25 microg/L (P = .006) as independent predictive factors. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with c-MCAD and ISMs(-) display unique clinical and laboratory features different from nc-MCAD patients. A significant percentage of c-MCAD patients can be considered as true ISMs(-) diagnosed at early phases of the disease.

INTRODUCTION: Numerous studies support the practice of different physical exercise modalities as an effective treatment to address the problems associated with schizophrenia, reporting that they result in improvements in patient symptoms and quality of life. Given the lack of studies comparing different types of training in controlled environments, the aim of this proposed study will be to compare the effects of three physical exercise programmes (strength, aerobic and mixed) on the symptoms, body composition, level of physical activity and health-related quality of life of patients with schizophrenia. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A multicentre, single-blinded (evaluator), randomised, wait-list controlled (ratio 2:2:2:1) trial will be conducted with 105 patients recruited from different psychosocial care centres. The participants will be randomised into three 16-week training groups comprising 48 sessions lasting 1 hour each, or to the wait-list control group. The training groups will complete aerobic, strength or mixed (aerobic+strength) training. The participants will be assessed before, immediately after and 6 months after the end of the intervention. The patients in the wait-list control group (n=15) will receive one of the three trainings immediately after the intervention. The study variables will include positive, negative and general symptomology (Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale) as the primary outcome; as secondary outcome: body composition (by assessing body mass index, body fat mass and waist circumference), physical activity levels (International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form) and quality of life (abbreviated WHO Quality of Life questionnaire). ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This study was approved by the ethics committees for Biomedical Research at the CEU Cardenal Herrera University of Valencia, Spain (CEI18/215). Participants will be fully informed of the purpose and procedures of the study, and written informed consent will be obtained. The results from this study will be published in peer-reviewed journals and presented in scientific conferences. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT04987151.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The location of the optic disc (OD) and the fovea is usually crucial in automatic screening systems for diabetic retinopathy. Previous methods aimed at their location often fail when these structures do not have the standard appearance. The purpose of this work is to propose novel, robust methods for the automatic detection of the OD and the fovea. METHODS: The proposed method comprises a preprocessing stage, a method for retinal background extraction, a vasculature segmentation phase and the computation of various novel saliency maps. The main novelty of this work is the combination of the proposed saliency maps, which represent the spatial relationships between some structures of the retina and the visual appearance of the OD and fovea. Another contribution is the method to extract the retinal background, based on region-growing. RESULTS: The proposed methods were evaluated over a proprietary database and three public databases: DRIVE, DiaretDB1 and Messidor. For the OD, we achieved 100% accuracy for all databases except Messidor (99.50%). As for the fovea location, we also reached 100% accuracy for all databases except Messidor (99.67%). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that the proposed methods are robust and effective to automatically detect the OD and the fovea. This way, they can be useful in automatic screening systems for diabetic retinopathy as well as other retinal diseases.

This work describes the synthesis of thiol-functionalized periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMOs) prepared using the precursor 1-thiol-1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane, alone or mixed with 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane. The thiol groups incorporated into the structure were found to be efficient for palladium binding. This has allowed these materials to be used as catalysts in the Suzuki cross-coupling reaction of bromobenzene and phenylboronic acid. Their performance has been compared to palladium-supported periodic mesoporous (organo)silicas and important differences have been observed between them. The use of different heterogeneity tests, such as hot filtration test and poisoning experiments, has provided a deep insight into the reaction mechanism and has confirmed that the reaction occurs in the homogeneous phase following a "release and catch" mechanism. Furthermore, the thiol-functionalized periodic mesoporous organosilica, synthesized using only 1-thiol-1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane as a precursor, has proven to be an efficient palladium scavenger.

Brettanomyces bruxellensis is a wine spoilage yeast that could be inactivated by pulsed light (PL); however, this technology may induce changes in the quality of this alcoholic drink. The present research aimed to determine the potential of PL to inactivate B. bruxellensis inoculated in white wine and to assess the effect of this technology on the color and aromatic profile of the wine. For this, a cocktail of B. bruxellensis strains was inoculated into the wine and its inactivation by PL was determined and fitted to a microbial inactivation model. Along with this, the effect of PL on instrument-measured color, and the volatile compounds of the wine were evaluated by GC/MS and descriptive sensory analysis, respectively. B. bruxellensis was inactivated according to the Geeraerd model including the tail effect, with a maximum inactivation of 2.10 log reduction at 10.7 J/cm2; this fluence was selected for further studies. PL affected wine color but the total color difference was below the just noticeable difference at 10.7 J/cm2. The concentration of 13 out of 15 volatile compounds decreased due to the PL, which was noticeable by the panel. It is not clear if these compounds were photolyzed or volatilized in the open reactor during treatment. In conclusion, PL is able to inactivate B. bruxellensis in white wine but the treatment impairs the volatile profile. The use of a closed reactor under turbulent flow is recommended for disaggregating yeast clumps that may cause the tailing of the inactivation curve, and to avoid the possible escape of volatile compounds during treatment.

BACKGROUND: Anaphylaxis after Hymenoptera sting has been described in patients with mastocytosis. Venom immunotherapy (VIT) is a safe and effective way to treat patients with Hymenoptera anaphylaxis, but few studies have addressed its usefulness in patients with systemic mastocytosis. OBJECTIVE: To study the effectiveness and safety of VIT in patients with systemic mastocytosis having anaphylaxis after Hymenoptera sting. METHODS: A total of 21 mastocytosis patients-4 women (19%) and 17 men (81%) with a median age of 50 years (range, 29-74 years)-with Hymenoptera sting anaphylaxis who were treated with VIT and followed for a median of 52 months (range, 2-250 months) were studied. RESULTS: In 18 of 21 patients-16 of them lacking skin involvement-anaphylaxis was the presenting symptom. Six patients (29%) experienced adverse reactions during VIT, 3 during initiation and 3 during maintenance. Twelve patients (57%) were resting while undergoing VIT; 9 (75%) presented local reactions and 3 (25%) systemic reactions, 1 of which required intubation. The Hymenoptera specific IgE decreased from 4.15 kU/L (range, 0.44-100 kU/L) before immunotherapy to 1.2 kU/L (range, 0.34-69.4 kU/L) after 4 years (P < .003). CONCLUSION: Venom immunotherapy is effective to treat IgE-mediated Hymenoptera anaphylaxis in patients with mastocytosis. Its use is recommended despite a relatively high risk of adverse reactions during the build-up phase because it provides protection from anaphylaxis in around 3/4 of the patients.

The dyeing industry is one of the most polluting in the world. The adsorption of dyes by polymeric matrixes can be used to minimize the discharge of dyes into the environment. In the present study, chitosan-NaOH and ß-cyclodextrin-epichlorohydrin polymers were used to remove the dye Direct Blue 78 from a wastewater model. To understand the adsorption behavior of Direct Blue 78 onto the polymers, adsorption rate and maximum adsorption capacity were calculated using kinetic tests and isotherm curves respectively. The kinetic data and mechanism of the adsorption process were analyzed by three models and the equilibrium data by three adsorption isotherms; also the different thermodynamic parameters were calculated. Results showed that the adsorption process follows pseudo-second-order kinetics in both polymers and the Langmuir isotherm best-fitted data for chitosan-NaOH polymer and the Freundlich isotherm for the ß-CDs-EPI polymer. The adsorption process is exothermic in both cases and spontaneous for the ß-CDs-EPI polymer to a certain temperature and not spontaneous for the chitosan-NaOH polymer and ß-CDs-EPI polymer at higher temperatures. The complementary action of an advanced oxidation process eliminated >99% of the dye from water. The coupled process seems to be suitable for reducing the environmental impact of the dyeing industry.
