RESUMO

Nilaparvata lugens is a notorious rice pest causing significant annual yield and economic losses. The use of entomopathogenic fungi offers a promising and eco-friendly approach to sustainable pest management programs. However, research in this area is currently limited to a few specific types of insects and other arthropods. This study aimed to analyze the biocontrol potential of Lecanicillium attenuatum against N. lugens. Bioassays showed that L. attenuatum 3166 induced >80% mortality in N. lugens following 7 d exposure. Greenhouse and field investigations demonstrated that L. attenuatum 3166 application leads to a substantial reduction in N. lugens populations. Under greenhouse conditions, fluorescence was detected in GFP-labeled L. attenuatum 3166 hyphae enveloping the bodies of N. lugens. In field trials, L. attenuatum 3166 treatment exhibited a control efficacy of up to 68.94% at 14 d post-application, which was comparable to that of the commercial entomopathogenic fungal agent. Genomic sequencing of L. attenuatum 3166 revealed a comprehensive array of genes implicated in its infestation and lethality. Further, the transcriptome sequencing analysis highlighted the elevated expression levels of genes encoding proteases, chitinases, cutinases, and phospholipases. Our findings highlight the potential of L. attenuatum 3166 as an effective biological control agent against N. lugens.

The whitebacked planthopper Sogatella furcifera (Horváth) (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) is one of the most destructive pests of rice in East and Southeast Asia. It is also a long-distance migratory insect and population size fluctuates frequently in these rice regions along the middle and lower Yangtze River. We analyzed the population seasonality of S. furcifera based on field surveys, light trap catching, and meteorological factors. We found that many S. furcifera were retained in local late rice in 2012, due to continuous rain and slightly windy weather conditions during the migration period. These results suggest that a new pattern of population fluctuation may occur where resident S. furcifera are dispersed into a single medium rice during harvest period, then rebound and thrive in late rice when there are suitable temperatures in September. Although the residency of S. furcifera in late rice fields in 2012 seems to be a special case, our findings suggest that S. furcifera exhibit a type of facultative migration. Our research also illuminates studies of the migration events of S. furcifera and benefits our understanding of the dynamics of S. furcifera in Hunan Province.

The Permian Fengcheng Formation (P1f.) in the Hashan area, situated on the southwestern margin of the Junggar Basin, has witnessed a remarkable breakthrough in shale oil exploration in recent years with nearly 789 million tons of shale oil resources. As a unique set of mixed sedimentary shales, the Fengcheng Formation in the Hashan area is characterized by mixed sedimentation of terrigenous siliciclastic sediments, authigenic minerals, and tuffaceous materials. However, the understanding of pore characteristics in the mixed sedimentary reservoir still remains limited, prohibiting accurate estimation of the oil content and insights into oil mobility. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), mercury injection capillary pressure (MICP), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-Ray Computer Tomography (X-CT), and geochemical analysis were performed to investigate the pore size distribution and main controlling factors of the mixed sedimentary reservoir. Results showed that the main pore types in the mixed sedimentary reservoir are intergranular pores and dissolution pores. The pores of the P1f. mixed shales in the Hashan area were classified into II-micropores (< 25 nm), I-micropores (25-100 nm), mesopores (100-1000 nm) and macropores (> 1000 nm). In general, the mixed sedimentary rocks of P1f. formation feature few macropores but a large number of micropores and mesopores. The CS exhibits the most favourable physical properties among all lithofacies. It is concluded that the abundance and maturity of organic matter, mineral composition, sedimentary structure, and diagenesis of reservoir together impact the pore structure in the mixed sedimentary reservoirs. The maturity of organic matter and the content of tuffaceous minerals are the most significant in influencing the pore structure of P1f. shales. Overall, the pore structure of complex lithologic reservoir formed by mixed deposition and its influence on physical properties are studied, and the characteristics of the microscopic pore-throat system of the dominant lithofacies in the Hashan area are clarified, which is of great significance as a guide for the exploration and development of mixed sedimentary reservoirs in continental shale oil in China.

The nuclear receptors HR3 and FTZ-F1 are highly conserved and function to regulate molting and reproduction in both hemimetabolous and holometabolous insects. However, their roles in Nilaparvata lugens are largely unknown. In the present study, we discover that NlHR3 and NlFTZ-F1 are activated in the nymph stages by ecdysone signaling. Transcription disruption of NlHR3 and NlFTZ-F1 expression prevents nymph ecdysis and metamorphosis, which leads to abnormal appearance, malformed ovaries, and lethal phenotypes. In addition, we demonstrate that NlHR3 and NlFTZ-F1 regulate molting and reproduction by interacting with the intrinsic 20E and JH signaling pathways. Our work offers a deep insight into the action mechanisms of HR3 and FTZ-F1 in insects. Moreover, NlHR3 and NlFTZ-F1 could properly be exploited as potential target genes for developing RNAi-based pesticides to control N. lugens.

Rice is a staple food for half of the human population, but the effects of diversification on yields, economy, biodiversity and ecosystem services have not been synthesized. Here we quantify diversification effects on environmental and socio-economic aspects of global rice production. We performed a second-order meta-analysis based on 25 first-order meta-analyses covering four decades of research, showing that diversification can maintain soil fertility, nutrient cycling, carbon sequestration and yield. We used three individual first-order meta-analyses based on 39 articles to close major research gaps on the effects of diversification on economy, biodiversity and pest control, showing that agricultural diversification can increase biodiversity by 40%, improve economy by 26% and reduce crop damage by 31%. Trade-off analysis showed that agricultural diversification in rice production promotes win-win scenarios between yield and other ecosystem services in 81% of all cases. Knowledge gaps remain in understanding the spatial and temporal effects of specific diversification practices and trade-offs.

The white-backed planthopper, WBPH, Sogatella furcifera (Horváth) is a plant pest that migrates long-distances. The migration pathway of WBPH in eastern China coincides with the north-south round trip of the East Asian monsoon. However, in Yunnan China, which is affected by two monsoon systems, the migration pathway is unclear. Light-trap data and analysis of female ovarian development showed that the peak period of immigration of WBPH into western Yunnan was earlier than in eastern Yunnan. Using meteorological reanalysis data and flight parameters of WBPH, trajectory modeling showed that there are two immigration pathways to Yunnan. One is from Myanmar to western Yunnan, and the other is from Vietnam and Laos to eastern Yunnan. The reason for the differences in source areas and immigration pathways between eastern and western Yunnan is that the west wind prevails in western Yunnan and is controlled by South Asian monsoon, while southwesterly winds prevail in eastern Yunnan due to the combined influence of South Asian monsoon and East Asian monsoon. The results indicate that WBPH invades Yunnan via two pathways under a two-monsoon system. These data will allow earlier prediction and population management of WBPH.

The Sogatella furcifera (Horváth) is a notorious and destructive insect pest, targeting >4 million hectares of rice cultivated in the Hunan Province. To understand the immigration dynamics, we collected S. furcifera light trap catches from 2006 to 2012 at Niangxiang, Linxiang, and Hanshou. We conducted a migration analysis to estimate the immigration source for the northeastern Hunan Province in June. Moreover, we dissected the ovaries of S. furcifera to classify population characteristics. We found that the first appearance of S. furcifera occurred from late April to early May, with June as the primary time for migrations into the northeastern Hunan Province. The majority of June ovaries caught in light traps were Grade I and Grade II, whereas those collected in paddy fields were Grade III and Grade IV, suggesting that the majority of S. furcifera immigrated into the northeastern Hunan Province. Our analysis points toward the northern and central Indo China Peninsula, the southern Hunan Province, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Province, the Guangdong Province, and the Hainan Province as possible immigration sources of S. furcifera in June for the northeastern Hunan Province. We propose terrain, loss of forward flow, and wind shear as causes for the difference observed in light trap catches between Ningxiang, Linxiang, and Hanshou monitoring stations in the June of 2009. Thus, our results suggest that monitoring and forecasting of S. furcifera should be done with particular emphasis in June.
