RESUMO

Factor VIII and von Willebrand factor proteins were evaluated in 115 patients having the chronic phase of the Toxic Epidemic Syndrome (TES), a new multisystemic disease probably caused by the ingestion of denatured rapeseed oil, and in 50 control volunteers. Higher circulating levels of factor VIII procoagulant activity (VIII:C) (158 +/- 58.4 U/dl), von Willebrand factor antigen (vWF:Ag) (166.1 +/- 55.5 U/dl) and von Willebrand factor ristocetin cofactor activity (vWF:RCo) (178.7 +/- 55.2 U/dl) were seen in TES patients (p less than 0.001, TES patients versus control subjects, for each parameter). The increased levels of vWF:Ag and vWF:RCo observed in TES patients correlated with the scleroderma like lesion of the skin, with the sicca syndrome and with Raynaud's phenomenon (p less than 0.01), but not with other clinical manifestations. The multimeric analysis of vWF in 92% of the TES patients was similar to that found in normal plasma, but in the remaining 8% a very slight increase of larger vWF multimers in plasma were observed. The raised levels of vWF found in TES patients in the chronic phase may reflect an "in vivo" vascular injury.

RESUMO

The clinical and histological features of a dermomycosis caused by a new dematiaceum fungus are described. The mycological characteristics of this fungus individualize and differentiate it from other demiataceum hyphomycetes, proposing the name of Botryomyces caespitosus for it. The submicroscopic features are commented, as well.

RESUMO

A case of botryomycosis was studied in which a coagulase-negative, DNAsenegative Staphylococcus with wide antibiotic sensitivity in vitro was isolated and which could be classified as having a 'low pathogenic capacity'. Nevertheless, there was no improvement with appropriate therapy. IgG and complement (C3) were demonstrated in the grains. Botryomycosis can be considered as a state of 'equilibrium' between the host and the microorganism. It is not clear if this results from low pathogenicity of the organism or from some peculiar characteristic of the host.

RESUMO

In the period 1962-1974, 36 patients with X-linked ichthyosis, belonging to 22 families, were selected for study. The frequency of this genodermatosis is higher in the province of Salamanca than in other countries. In most of the cases, the lesions were apparent at birth or shortly after. In 41% of the patients studied by slit-lamp microscopy, posterior embriotoxom was seen. Hyperkeratosis was seen in follicular and sweat duct orifices. Statistical analysis of the pedigrees showed a higher proportion of affected males among the offspring of carriers and also among the offspring of the ichthyotics' sisters. In addition, among the patients' descendants, the higher ratio of females is statistically significant, showing that there is likely to be selection in favour of the X chromosome.

RESUMO

An epidemiologic study of the dermatophytoses in Salamanca (Spain) from 1973 to 1976 was performed. Dermatophyte species were identified in 224 patients with clinical tinea infections; 31 bovines, 18 rodents and 70 soil samples. The prevalence of Trichophyton verrucosum and Epidermophyton floccosum was strikingly high in relation to other statistics. The most common clinical forms were tinea corporis and tinea cruris. Tinea capitis by anthropophilic species was uncommon.

RESUMO

We report on a female aged 13 years, whose scalp hair began to disappear at the age of 9 years, leaving only sparse wispy hairs in the parietal-occipital region. Eyelashes, eyebrows and body hair were unaffected. There were no signs of ectodermal dysplasia on the skin, nails, teeth and eyes nor other congenital abnormalities. The family pedigree showed 15 relatives similarly affected according to an autosomal dominant mode of transmission. Clinical, genetic, histological and ultrastructural aspects led to a diagnosis of hereditary hypotrichosis simplex of the scalp (Toribio-Quiñones type).
