RESUMO

In this study, the impact of formulated emulsion was studied on strawberries which were coated using dip and electrostatic spray coating methods. The coated strawberries were kept at room temperature for a period of 12 days. A significant level of chargeability of w/o emulsion was achieved in terms of charge-to-mass ratio of 2.81 mC/kg at an applied high voltage of 2.0 kV, applied air pressure of 0.3 MPa, and liquid flow rate of 33.6 ml/min. The distance of 170 mm from the nozzle tip to Faraday cage was maintained during the measurements. As compared to uncoated and dip coated strawberries, the water-in-oil based electrostatically charged sprays considerably (p < 0.05) reduced the weight loss, decay rate, pH, titrable acidity, TSS, and antioxidant activity. In both the cases, i.e. strawberries coated with dip and electrostatic spray coating methods, the same weight loss was observed, however, there was a considerably less weight loss as compared to uncoated samples. The textures of the uncoated (9.02 N) and dip coated (12.58 N) samples were significantly different from the electrostatic spray coated (15.85 N) samples. Since, the coating formulation had no impact on the sensory attributes, the samples were considered as acceptable at the end of the storage. Furthermore, compared to uncoated, water-in-oil based electrostatically charged spray coating was more effective at delaying the decay by 12 days.

RESUMO

AIM: The systematic review presented herein was performed to descriptively analyze the causes for the failure of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacture (CAD/CAM) restorations. The meta-analysis reported herein was performed to estimate long-term survival and success rates of CAD-CAM fabrications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using the PICOS paradigm, a systematic search was carried out in the PubMed and Cochrane databases to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and prospective observational studies reporting survival data for CAD/CAM restorations. After selecting studies with a predefined set of selection criteria, data from included prospective clinical studies and RCTs were used for a systematic review aimed at a descriptive analysis of factors associated with failure of CAD-CAM restorations. Data from the included prospective clinical studies were used for meta-analysis, wherein 5-year and 10-year survival and success rates were estimated using Poisson regression models. RESULTS: The systematic review included data from 9 RCTs and 6 observational studies, which had a median follow-up of 36 months and 60 months, respectively. About 58 failures and 118 technical/ biological complications were noted in the included RCTs and 9 failures along with 58 technical/biological complications were noted in the prospective clinical studies. Poisson regression indicated an estimated 5-year and 10-year survival rates of 85.55-100 and 71-100, respectively. The estimated 5-year and 10-year success rates were 74.2-92.75 and 33.3-85.5, respectively. CONCLUSION: Several technical and biological complications contribute to failure of CAD/CAM restorations. However, CAD/CAM restorations with routine chairside materials might have clinically meaningful success rates in the long term. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The results presented herein indicate that optimal strategies for mitigation of biological and technical complications may augment the success of CAD/CAM fabrications in restorative dentistry. Studies aimed at identification of such strategies are needed to further enhance the long-term success rates of CAD/CAM restorations.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Without fetal or perinatal intervention, congenital high airway obstruction syndrome (CHAOS) is a fatal anomaly. The ex utero intrapartum treatment (EXIT) procedure has been used to secure the fetal airway and minimize neonatal hypoxia but is associated with increased maternal morbidity. CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old woman (gravida 1, para 0) was referred to our hospital at 31 weeks gestation with fetal anomalies, including echogenic lungs, tracheobronchial dilation, and flattened diaphragms. At 32 weeks, fetoscopic evaluation identified laryngeal stenosis, which was subsequently treated with balloon dilation and stent placement. The patient developed symptomatic and regular preterm contractions at postoperative day 7 with persistent sonographic signs of CHAOS, which prompted a repeat fetoscopy with confirmation of a patent fetal airway followed by Cesarean delivery under neuraxial anesthesia. Attempts to intubate through the tracheal stent were limited and resulted in removal of the stent. A neonatal airway was successfully established with rigid bronchoscopy. Direct laryngoscopy and bronchoscopy confirmed laryngeal stenosis with a small tracheoesophageal fistula immediately inferior to the laryngeal stenosis and significant tracheomalacia. A tracheostomy was then immediately performed for anticipated long-term airway and pulmonary management. The procedures were well tolerated by both mom and baby. The baby demonstrated spontaneous healing of the tracheoesophageal fistula by day of life 7 with discharge home with ventilator support at 3 months of life. CONCLUSION: Use of repeated fetoscopy in order to relieve fetal upper airway obstruction offers the potential to minimize neonatal hypoxia, while concurrently decreasing maternal morbidity by avoiding an EXIT procedure. Use of the tracheal stent in CHAOS requires further investigation. The long-term reconstruction and respiratory support of children with CHAOS remain challenging.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Ex utero intrapartum treatment (EXIT) is utilized for safe delivery when a baby has a compromised airway. The purpose of this retrospective study was to examine the indications and outcomes of 11 children presenting with airway occluding oropharyngeal and cervical teratomas. METHODS: Study of all children with an airway occluding teratoma delivered via EXIT (2001-2018) in our unit. Primary outcomes included survival and tracheostomy at discharge. Data are reported using descriptive statistics as median (range) and rate (%). RESULTS: We performed 45 EXIT procedure performed between January 2001 and April 2018. Of these, eleven were for cervical and/or upper airway teratoma. Ten (91%) cases had associated polyhydramnios, two (18%) developed nonimmune hydrops, and eight (72%) delivered preterm. Six (45.5%) were performed as an emergency. Estimated blood loss was 1000 ml (500, 1000). The neonatal mortality rate was 18% (2/11) and 33% (3/9) of the survivors were discharged with a tracheostomy. CONCLUSION: EXIT is a reasonable option for delivery of babies with an occlusive upper airway mass. Neonatal survival depends on individualized factors but may be as high as 82% in those with teratoma.

RESUMO

AIM AND OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to measure the refractive index of four commercially available enamel resin composites, using optical coherence tomography (OCT) and their relationship with the atomic composition of the composite resin fillers utilizing an energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (EDX). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four different enamel composites, namely Enamel HRi color UE3, Enamel HFO color GE3, Vit-l-escence color Pearl Frost, and Amelogen Plus color Enamel White were tested. For each composite, disks with different thicknesses were fabricated and then light-cured according to the manufacturer's instructions. The disks were then stored in deionized water under 36.5 °C for at least 7 days. Each of the samples from the four different groups was measured in five distinctive points to analyze the optical and physical length using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Elemental analysis of all four different enamel shades of the composite was done using an EDX. RESULTS: The filler contents showed interesting differences in elemental composition and concentration; however, Si seemed to be a common filler component. The HRi composite presented a distinctive composition compared to other materials and was the only composite that showed a smaller percentage of SiO2, and also was the only composite that contained compounds, such as P2O5, ZnO, CaO, La2O3, and V2O5. The optical coherence tomography analysis showed the refractive index values of all tested enamel composites. Among the four different enamel composite resins tested, the enamel HRi composite demonstrated the most ideal refractive index to mimic natural enamel. CONCLUSION: The enamel HRi composite demonstrated a distinctive filler composition and this could be the main reason behind its higher refractive index. Nonetheless, it remains unclear how much of an impact this feature has in the final esthetic outcome of anterior composite restorations, where many other optical phenomena are also important. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The clinical success of any esthetic restorative procedure depends on diagnosing the proper treatment plan and also on executing this treatment with the right materials. On direct esthetic restorations, knowing the optical properties of such materials is fundamental, as they should be able to replicate both natural enamel and dentin. RESUMO

In patients with Pierre Robin sequence (PRS), understanding the mechanism of airway obstruction and the potential for concurrent airway lesions is important for determining appropriate intervention. When concomitant airway anomalies are present with PRS, mandibular distraction osteogenesis alone is often contraindicated and unsuccessful at alleviating the obstruction, mandating the need for tracheostomy. Herein, the authors present the second-reported case of PRS with concomitant complete tracheal rings and highlight the importance collaborative surgical efforts to avoid tracheostomy. Our patient was born with signs and symptoms of PRS and concomitant complete tracheal rings. At birth, he developed respiratory compromise that was resistant to invasive and noninvasive intervention and was transferred to our care. The severity of his airway compromise necessitated operative intervention. Due to the patient's complex medical condition, avoiding the long-term sequelae of a tracheostomy and performing mandibular distraction was favorable. However, due to his multi-level airway disease, a 2-staged approach was planned: sliding tracheoplasty to release the tracheal rings, followed by mandibular distraction to correct the micrognathia. The patient tolerated both procedures and was successfully distracted and eventually weaned into room air. When managing patients with PRS in the setting of severe respiratory distress, securing the airway and carefully evaluating for concomitant airway anomalies is crucial. Even in the setting of multi-level airway disease where mandibular distraction is typically contraindicated, by directly addressing each anatomic level of airway obstruction, the airway can be safely secured and the resultant consequences of tracheostomy can be avoided. Careful planning with a multidisciplinary team is essential.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The neurocognitive associations in paediatric obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) are well known; however, whether polysomnographic features can predict these associations is unknown. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to compare common polysomnographic parameters in children with OSA in the presence and absence of neurocognitive dysfunction. METHODS: Polysomnography data for children ages 3-6 years with mild-moderate OSA who as defined by AHI between 5 and 10 were analysed from a single sleep centre at a tertiary paediatric hospital from January 2016 to December 2018. The following parameters were identified: arousals per hour, percentage of time asleep, apnoea-hypopnoea index (AHI), oxygen desaturation nadir during sleeps, baseline oxygen saturation during sleep, time spent with SpO2 less than 90%, maximum transcutaneous CO2, per cent of the total sleep time spent with TcCO2 greater than 50 mmHg, age, body mass index (BMI), gender and type of disability in the neurocognitive dysfunction group. Neurocognitive diagnoses were recorded. Those with syndromic comorbidities were excluded. The study cohort was then compared to a cohort of 200 subjects with OSA and no neurocognitive disorders matched for age, gender and BMI. A paired column analysis by chi-squared analysis was then undertaken between the two groups. RESULTS: A total of 200 children were identified (126 males and 74 females) in the neurocognitive dysfunction group (OSA with neurocognitive dysfunction) and compared with 200 children in the control group (OSA without neurocognitive dysfunction) (113 males and 87 females). There were no statistical differences between groups. CONCLUSION: Commonly used polysomnographic indices are not predictive of neurocognitive dysfunction in paediatric OSA.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To determine the agreement of paediatric otolaryngologists on classifying laryngomalacia (LM). DESIGN: Intra- and interobserver agreement study of two classification systems. SETTING: Three tertiary referral paediatric centres. PARTICIPANTS: Three paediatric otolaryngologists, who were blinded to any clinical details, interpreted the videos of children diagnosed with LM using the Holinger and Olney classifications independently. They rated the videos twice with a washout period of at least 2 weeks. THE MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Inter- and intra-observer agreement measured by overall Fleiss kappa and unweighted Cohen's kappa coefficients. The secondary outcome measures were inter- and intra-observer agreement on the individual anatomical subunits of the supraglottis affected by LM, characterised by the subcategories of the classifications. RESULTS: Video records of infants and children <18 years who had an endoscopic diagnosis of LM from 2012 to 2017 were retrospectively chosen for inclusion (n = 73). The overall Fleiss kappa coefficient was 0.25 (95% CI 0.18-0.32) amongst the raters using the Holinger classification and 0.31 (95% CI 0.21-0.42) for the Olney classification. Intra-observer agreement using the Holinger classification was 0.30 (95% CI 0.18-0.42), 0.62 (95% CI 0.23-0.85) and 0.84 (95% CI 0.75-0.94], whilst the Olney classification yielded values of 0.41 (95% CI 0.26-0.56), 0.51 (95% CI 0.29-0.63) and 0.63 (95% CI 0.48-0.78). CONCLUSIONS: The agreement on types of LM between expert observers is modest using the Holinger and Olney classifications. This has significant implications for accurately diagnosing LM and exposes potential obstacles against credible pooling of data and extrapolation of information.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of atmospheric cold plasma (ACP) treatment on the microbial inactivation, physicochemical properties, and shelf-life of strawberry fruit with its extended in-package storage at room (25 °C) and refrigerated (4 °C) temperature. ACP treatment of 10, 15 and 30 min was studied on strawberry fruit using a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) at 60 kV with an input voltage of 260 V at 50 Hz. The shelf-life of ACP treated strawberry was extended to 5 days at 25 °C and 9 days at 4 °C in sealed ACP package. However, non-treated packaged strawberry was degraded in 2 days. ACP treatment of 15 min resulted in 2 log reduction of microbial load and enhanced the concentration of chlorogenic acid, hyprin, phloretin, vanillin, gallic acid, 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde and rutin during in-package storage of 5 day (~ 120 h) at 25 °C with respect to control (p < 0.05). In addition, ACP treatment of 15 min at 60 kV was also found to increase the total phenolic content and antioxidant activity. However, total soluble solids, pH and moisture were not affected with ACP treatment (p > 0.05). Therefore, ACP treatment of 15 min with in-package storage of 5 days (~ 120 h) was found to be advantageous for increasing the shelf-life and functional quality of strawberry fruit.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The ex utero intrapartum treatment (EXIT) is utilized to transition fetuses with prenatally diagnosed airway obstruction to postnatal life. We describe the unique clinical course, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of patients with cervical lymphatic malformation (CLM) managed with EXIT. METHODS: Review of fetuses with diagnosed CLM was delivered by EXIT (2001-2018) in a tertiary referral fetal center. Outcomes included survival, tracheostomy at discharge, neonatal course after delivery, and pulmonary hypoplasia. Data are reported as median [range] and rate (%). RESULTS: Out of 45 patients delivered by EXIT, 10 were delivered for CLM: seven had polyhydramnios, one had nonimmune hydrops, five delivered preterm, and three were emergency EXITs. The EXIT time and estimated blood loss were 125 minutes (95, 158) and 900 mL (500, 1500), respectively. Airway was secured in all. There was one neonatal death (day 8) with prematurity, sepsis, and pulmonary hypoplasia. Three out of nine were discharged with a tracheostomy. CONCLUSION: In CLM, close monitoring for structural neck involvement and development of polyhydramnios are important and may be an indication for EXIT as the optimal delivery mode. An experienced multidisciplinary team is a key factor for an effective approach to the obstructed airway in CLM.

RESUMO

Fetus in fetu is an extremely rare congenital anomaly. We describe the perinatal diagnosis and management of a fetus with oropharyngeal and cervical fetus in fetu. High-resolution ultrasonography with 3-dimensional rendering can identify increased risks of airway obstruction in utero. Early identification allows a multidisciplinary team to be assembled for a scheduled ex utero intrapartum treatment procedure.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Aim of this clinical trial was to investigate the effect of a calcium phosphate based desensitizer paste applied prior to in-office tooth whitening on bleaching sensitivity (BS). METHODS: This crossover study was designed as randomized double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial. The desensitizer paste Teethmate AP (TAP) contains tetracalcium phosphate and dicalcium phosphate anhydrous in glycerol and polyethylene glycol, whereas placebo (PLA) is a calcium phosphate free analog. Fifty patients with sound maxillary incisors and canines were enrolled. Tooth shades were determined with a Vitapan Classic Shade guide. Randomly, TAP and PLA were applied to the left or to the right anterior teeth. After rinsing and air-drying the bleaching gel (Opalescence Boost PF 40%) was applied and left on the labial surfaces for 15 minutes. Sensitivity was recorded using a 10 cm visual analog scale (VAS) before, at 5, 10, and 15 minutes during, and at 1 hour, 1, 2, and 7 days after bleaching. Tooth whitening was determined with the shade guide after 1 day and 1 week. RESULTS: Prebleaching desensitization with TAP reduced BS significantly when compared with PLA. Between 1 and 7 days the average sensitivity scores were close to zero, whereas the average scores for PLA were significantly higher during this time interval. Independent from the desensitizing treatment after 1 and 7 days the medians of the shades were between 5 and 3.5 units brighter. CONCLUSIONS: Prebleaching desensitization with TAP was effective in reducing BS during and after tooth whitening treatment and had no adverse effect on the bleaching result. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Prebleaching topical application of a calcium phosphate containing compound reduced significantly bleaching sensitivity during a single 15 minutes treatment and up to one week with a 40% hydrogen peroxide containing gel without compromising tooth whitening.

RESUMO

Tomato processing industry generates huge waste like tomato skin, seed, and pulp which creates environmental issues. Since tomato pomace contains bioactive compounds and pigments, present study was conducted to investigate the effect of tomato pomace addition on physicochemical characteristics and shelf-life stability of the developed bread and muffin. Refined flour was partially substituted with 35 and 40% tomato pomace in bread and muffin, respectively. Tomato pomace addition in bread and muffin was observed to significantly (p < 0.05) increase the dietary fiber, vitamin C, antioxidant activity and minerals (Na, K, Mg, Ca, Fe). The color parameters for bread and muffins were quantified in terms of L* (lightness), a* (redness/greenness) and b* (yellowness/blueness). There was an increase in a* and b*, while L* values decreased. Tomato based bread and muffin were found to possess softer texture as compared to control products. Microbial study has depicted the enhanced shelf-life of tomato based bread and muffin. Shelf life of preservative added tomato based bread was 8 days and muffins were 12 days. Tomato pomace could be a very useful commodity for incorporation into bread and muffin to have a complete nutritive food product.

RESUMO

Pediatric robotic surgery is a relatively new technology that has been shown to be safe and feasible for a number of pediatric procedures. Our literature analysis was performed using Pubmed database between January 2005 and December 2015, using key words: "robotic," "robotic surgery," "TORS," "pediatric," "children," "head and neck," and "da Vinci". We selected only publications in English. Eight published reports met the selection criteria. We totally found 41 patients, and the age range was between 2 months and 19 years. The cases are 16 only lingual tonsillectomy, nine base of tongue and lingual tonsillectomy, two malignant disease in the oropharynx (high-grade undifferentiated sarcoma and biphasic synovial sarcoma), one tongue base thyroglossal duct cyst, 11 laryngeal cleft cyst, one posterior glottic stenosis, and one congenital true vocal cord paralysis surgeries. One intraoperative complication was reported. No patient needed postoperative tracheotomy. Hospital duration time had a range of 1-16 days. TORS is new for pediatric patients in head and neck areas, and there were few reports. It is becoming increasingly used in head and neck surgeries and those reports above are encouraging for pediatric robotic airway surgeries in otolaryngology in the future.

RESUMO

AIM: The aim of this study is to compare the color space of Vita Lumin shade guide (SG) with the natural teeth of the local population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 100 maxillary central incisors (100 patients) were subjected to color measurement with a spectrocolorimeter. For each tooth, L*, a*, b* values were recorded. All the shade tabs of Vita Lumin SG were analyzed with a spectrocolorimeter to define the color space covered by the Vita Lumin SG. The L*a*b* values of natural teeth were plotted on separate scattered diagrams and compared. RESULTS: About two out of three attributes (luminance and blue spectrum) of the local population of Bengaluru displayed a broader range than those available in Vita Lumin SG. CONCLUSION: The local population requires an SG with an extended range, covering a higher luminance spectrum and broader blue spectrum. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Esthetic restorations require accurate shade matching with the adjacent natural teeth, SGs being the mean of shade selection and communication should be comparable to the natural teeth.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Despite the increasing popularity of propranolol for treatment of infantile hemangioma (IH), there is need for further evidence of efficacy and safety. This study is a retrospective review of one institution's experience treating IH with propranolol using a standard protocol. METHODS: Between 2009 and 2014, patients with IH were evaluated for treatment with propranolol. Exclusion criteria included a history of hypoglycemia, respiratory disorders, and cardiovascular disorders. Propranolol, 2 mg/kg/d, was initiated during 48-hour inpatient stay. Weight and complications were monitored. Appearance was assessed by Visual Analog Cosmetic Scale (VACS) via serial photography. RESULTS: Twenty-three patients were treated with propranolol. Average age at initiation of therapy was 14.9 weeks. Twenty-two lesions were on the head and neck, and 1 was on the trunk. Average treatment duration was 54.3 weeks (range 24-148 wk). Treatment was confirmed to be complete in 23 patients at the time of review (91.3%). Two patients were lost to follow-up. Posttreatment color, size, and VACS improved significantly (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference between first and most recent weight. Two patients experienced hypoglycemia, 1 during a diarrheal illness and 1 during inpatient treatment initiation. CONCLUSION: The authors present a series of patients with IH safely treated with 2 mg/kg/d of propranolol. Using a strict protocol, few complications were observed. Patients achieved significant reduction in size and improvement of the overall appearance of IH.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study is to determine the influence of different enamel shades of various thickness on chroma and value of vita shade of dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three enamel composite resin shades (Enamel white, grey and neutral) and one dentin shade (A 2) from A melogen Plus (Ultradent) was used. Ninety Enamel disk specimens of 0.5, 0.75 and 1 mm thickness and 10 mm in diameter for each shade and 90 dentin disk specimens of 2 mm in thickness and 10 mm in diameter was used for the study. The spectrophotometric values of the dentin shade with and without enamel specimens were recorded and the values were converted to CIEL*a*b values. RESULTS: Statistical analysis was done using Pearson correlation coefficients to verify the effect of thickness on Chroma and value, and the significance was evaluated by one-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc test. Two way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc was done to verify the variation within the groups. Results revealed a significant positive correlation between thickness and chroma and a negative correlation between thickness and value. There was a statistically significant variation in between the groups. CONCLUSION: All groups produced a significant increase in chroma with increase in thickness of enamel shade upto a thickness of 0.75 mm after which the behavior of each shade was erratic. Hence, the optimum thickness would be 0.75 mm. All groups produced a significant decrease in value with increase in thickness of enamel shade. Enamel white produced the greatest reduction in value, enamel neutral the least and enamel grey demonstrated an intermediate result. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: There is a need to have a knowledge of the effect on chroma and value when dentin is layered with different enamel shades, it is also important to understand the effect of these enamel shades at different thicknesses to better control the color and reproduce esthetic simulating natural teeth.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of four dentin desensitizers on pain reduction in hypersensitive cervical dentin lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The trial was designed as a randomized, controlled, four-arm, single-masked study. Fifty subjects with at least one hypersensitive lesion in each of the four quadrants were allocated. The requested pre-operative pain, determined as a response to 2-s air-blast (AB) and probe scratching (PS), was ≥5 on a VAS scale, 0 = no through to 10 = worst pain. Randomly each subject received each of the four treatments: MS Coat One F (MSC, Sun Medical, Japan), Nanoseal (NAN, Nishin, Japan), Teethmate Desensitizer (TMD, Kuraray Noritake, Japan) and Gluma Desensitizer PowerGel (GLU, HeraeusKulzer, Germany). The investigator assessed blindly the pain response using the two stimuli and recorded the patients' VAS scores before and immediately after application, after 1 week and after 1, 3 and 6 months. STATISTICAL DATA TREATMENT: ANOVA and post-hoc testing (p ≤ 0.05). RESULTS: Forty-nine subjects completed the trial. Pre-operative dentin hypersensitivity (DH) for the groups was not significantly different. All desensitizers reduced DH significantly throughout the 6-months observation. ANOVA revealed significant differences among VAS scores, obtained with the desensitizing agents (p < 0.001). Ranking by post-hoc testing was: MSC > NAN > TMD > GLU (p < 0.05). Upon PS NAN and TMD showed slight but significant regain of sensitivity after 6 months. For GLU PS scores immediately after application and after 6 months were not significantly different, whereas recalls after 1 week, 1 month and 3 months revealed significantly lower scores. CONCLUSION: The calcium phosphate-based TMD and GLU proved highly effective in reducing sensitivity.

RESUMO

The study aimed to extract and encapsulate betalain pigment from prickly pear (Opuntia ficus-indica) using ultrasound-assisted extraction and eco-friendly glycerol. Subsequent analysis encompassed assessing its thermal stability, shelf-life, bio-accessibility, and biological properties. The process optimization employed Response Surface Methodology (RSM), focusing on glycerol concentration (20-50 %), sample to solvent ratio (1:10-1:20), temperature (30-60 °C), and time (10-30 min). Optimal conditions were determined as 23.15 % glycerol, 1:10 sample to solvent ratio, 10.43 min treatment time, and 31.15 °C temperature. Under these conditions, betalain content reached 858.28 mg/L with a 93.76 % encapsulation efficiency. Thermal stability tests (80-180 °C; 30 & 60 min) showed degradation of betalain with higher temperatures and longer durations, affecting the visual aspect (ΔE) of the pigment. Encapsulated betalain exhibited favorable shelf stability, with optimal storage life of 404.27 days at 4 °C in amber conditions, compared to 271.99 days at 4 °C without amber, 141.92 days at 25 °C without amber, and 134.22 days at 25 °C with amber. Bio-accessibility of encapsulated betalain was significantly higher (2.05 ± 0.03 %) than conventionally extracted pigment (1.03 ± 0.09 %). The encapsulated pigment displayed strong anti-inflammatory properties in dosages of 2-20 µL, with no cytotoxic effects. Additionally, incorporation into gummies was successful and visually approved by sensory panellists. Glycerol proved to be a green encapsulating agent for betalain, offering high shelf life and bio-accessibility, making it suitable for food industry applications. The encapsulated pigment demonstrated robust thermal stability and shelf life, making it suitable for food industry applications. This study highlights glycerol's potential as a sustainable alternative for natural pigment extraction.
