Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of carboprost methylate suppository for cervical ripening before diagnostic hysteroscopy in premenopausal women. Methods: From July 2014 to July 2015, 1 614 women who were undergone diagnostic hysteroscopy in 12 hospitals were randomly assigned into study group (n=1 209) and control group (n=405) . The cases in study group were given 1 mg carboprost methylate suppository in vagina before hysteroscopy, the cases in control group were given 1 mg placebo. The extent of cervical ripening, the time of dilated cervix, pain scoring, incidence of drug side reactions after 24, 48, 72 hours, satisfaction degree of operators and patients, the time of hysteroscopy, incidence of complications between the two groups were observed and compared. Results: (1) Mean cervical widths in the study and control groups were 6.11±1.11 and 5.95±1.11, and showed a significant difference (P=0.034) ; the percentage of women requiring cervical dilatation in study group was lower than the percentage in control group significantly [28.3% (342/1 209) versus 34.6% (140/405) , P=0.020]. (2) The time of dilated cervix in study group was shorter than the time in control group significantly [ (34±25) versus (52±49) s, P=0.028] for the patients whose mean cervical widths≤4. (3) There was no significant difference in pain scores between the two groups (P>0.05) . (4) The incidence of side reactions 24, 48, 72 hours after operation were no significant difference between the two groups (P>0.05) . (5) The satisfaction degree of operators and patients, the time of hysteroscopy, incidence of complications between the two groups were no singnifcant difference between the two groups (all P>0.05) . Conclusion: Application of carboprost methylate suppository by vagina before hysteroscopy is an effective and safe method of cervical ripening.

Whether seeds germinate or maintain dormancy is decided upon through very intricate physiological processes. Correct timing of these processes is most important for the plants life cycle. If moist conditions are encountered, a low dormancy level causes pre-harvest sprouting in various crop species, such as wheat, corn and rice, this decreases crop yield and negatively impacts downstream industrial processing. In contrast, a deep level of seed dormancy prevents normal germination even under favourable conditions, resulting in a low emergence rate during agricultural production. Therefore, an optimal seed dormancy level is valuable for modern mechanised agricultural systems. Over the past several years, numerous studies have demonstrated that diverse endogenous and environmental factors regulate the balance between dormancy and germination, such as light, temperature, water status and bacteria in soil, and phytohormones such as ABA (abscisic acid) and GA (gibberellic acid). In this updated review, we highlight recent advances regarding the molecular mechanisms underlying regulation of seed dormancy and germination processes, including the external environmental and internal hormonal cues, and primarily focusing on the staple crop species. Furthermore, future challenges and research directions for developing a full understanding of crop seed dormancy and germination are also discussed.

Nowadays research and clinical studies of human reproductive endocrinology are generally carried out using human blood reproductive hormone assays. However the acquisition of human blood samples has some shortcomings. In search of new approaches, we paid attention to the fact that progesterone can be detected in cow's hair. Consequently we investigated whether or not steroid hormones are measurable in human hair. The results showed that the levels of steroid hormones in hair are not affected by shampoo and do not significantly vary between different segments of hair (i.e. top, middle and basal segments). The menstrual estradiol and progesterone rhythm of female hair is similar to that of female serum. The ratio of hair estradiol to serum estradiol in the female is 41.2% and that of hair progesterone to serum progesterone is 59.0%; the ratio of hair testosterone to serum testosterone in male is 116%. There are significant correlations between hair and serum steroid hormones of healthy human adult: gamma (estradiol) = 0.395 (n = 20), p < 0.05; gamma (progesterone) = 0.440 (n = 22), p < 0.025 and gamma (testosterone) = 0.395 (n = 25), p < 0.05.

Low molecular weigh, heparin (LMWH) possesses multiple nonanticoagulant properties. In the present study, we observed its anti-airway allergic inflammatory effects by bronchoalveolar lavage in guinea pigs. Guinea pigs were sensitized by repeatedly inhaling aerosolized ovalbumin. LMWH (400 u/l, 800 u/l), dexamethasone (1.2 mg/1) or vehicle (normal saline) was inhaled for 7 days. Then the animals were sacrificed under anesthesia and then lavaged with ice-cold Hank's buffer immediately; bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) was prepared 24 h after the animals were challenged by antigen exposure. The effects of LMWH on total cell counts, absolute eosinophil counts and cell catalogues in BALF were studied; effects on the activity of eosinophil peroxidase (EPO) and the contents of histamine and eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) in BALF supernatant were detected. Our results showed that compared with the vehicle group, LMWH at 400 u/l and 800 u/1 could significantly reduce total cell counts, absolute eosinophil counts and percentage of eosinophils in BALF (P<0.05 and P<0.01, respectively); LMWH at 800 u/l markedly inhibited the activity of EPO in BALF supernatant (P<0.05); LMWH at 400 u/l and 800 u/l remarkably reduced the content of histamine in BALF supernatant (P<0.05 and P<0.01, respectively), LMWH at 800 u/l decreased the content of ECP (P<0.05) significantly. It suggested that LMWH exerted anti-airway allergic inflammatory action by inhibiting infiltration of inflammatory cells and reducing release of inflammatory mediators, as well as antagonizing their activities, and that LMWH could be developed as a potential anti-bronchial asthmatic drug.
