RESUMO

Allelopathy is a natural phenomenon of competing and interfering with other plants or microbial growth by synthesizing and releasing the bioactive compounds of plant or microbial origin known as allelochemicals. This is a sub-discipline of chemical ecology concerned with the effects of bioactive compounds produced by plants or microorganisms on the growth, development and distribution of other plants and microorganisms in natural communities or agricultural systems. Allelochemicals have a direct or indirect harmful effect on one plant by others, especially on the development, survivability, growth, and reproduction of species through the production of chemical inhibitors released into the environment. Cultivation systems that take advantage of allelopathic plants' stimulatory/inhibitory effects on plant growth and development while avoiding allelopathic autotoxicity is critical for long-term agricultural development. Allelopathy is one element that defines plant relationships and is involved in weed management, crop protection, and microbial contact. Besides, the allelopathic phenomenon has also been reported in the forest ecosystem; however, its presence depends on the forest type and the surrounding environment. In the present article, major aspects addressed are (1) literature review on the impacts of allelopathy in agroecosystems and underpinning the research gaps, (2) chemical, physiological, and ecological mechanisms of allelopathy, (3) genetic manipulations, plant defense, economic benefits, fate, prospects and challenges of allelopathy. The literature search and consolidation efforts in this article shall pave the way for future research on the potential application of allelopathic interactions across various ecosystems.

A semi-microscopic theory is developed for heterogeneous electron transfer (HET) kinetics based on the energy level alignment approach at self-assembled monolayer (SAM) covered metal electrodes. Theory provides the electronic and molecular property-dependent equations for the HET rate constant (k0) and the transfer coefficient (α) for potential. k0 is formulated using the activation free energy as a product of the SAM covered metal work function (WF) and fractional electronic charge exchanged at the transition state (attained through the alignment of the frontier molecular orbital (FMO) energy level of the electroactive group with the WF of metal). k0 is a function of the metal jellium electronic screening length and dielectric and of the molecular self-assembly (through its dipole moment, size, and packing density) and the FMO energies of electroactive groups. The operative potential at the transition state is governed by α, which is a function of molecular spacer length and characteristic electronic-dipolar coupling length. The current rectification phenomenon in nanogap molecular devices is theoretically analyzed using equations for k0 and α for SAM covered source and drain electrodes. Theory unravels the LUMO or HOMO dichotomy for a given metal: (i) for the HOMO assisted ET, the metal with a high WF has a high current rectification ratio (RR), while (ii) for the LUMO assisted ET, the metal with a low WF has a high current RR in asymmetrical devices. Theory predicts the reversal in current rectification by altering the dipole moment of the anchoring molecule, the HOMO/LUMO energy of the electroactive groups, and the nature of the metal. Finally, theory shows qualitative and quantitative coherence with the reported experimental current-potential response of molecular device.

AIM: The goal of this research was to compare radiographically the outcomes of hydraulic transcrestal sinus lifting with platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) or normal saline filling on implant survival rates, negative outcomes, and variations in the height of residual alveolar ridge (HARB). MATERIALS AND METHODS: There were 80 study participants included and 90 dental implants were placed. The study participants were divided into two categories: Category A and Category B. Each category consists of 40 study participants. Category A: Normal saline was placed in the maxillary sinus. Category B: PRF was placed in the maxillary sinus. Implant survival, complications, and HARB alterations were the outcome metrics. Radiographic images through Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) were retrieved and compared prior to surgery (T0), immediately following surgery (T1), three months later (T2), 6 months later (T3), and 12 months later (T4). RESULTS: There are 90 implants having an average length of 10.5 ± 0.7 mm were inserted into the posterior portion of the maxilla of 80 patients with an average HARB of 6.9 ± 1.2 mm. At T1, elevation in HARB peaked, and the sinus membrane continued to droop but steadied while observed at T3. The steady increment of areas of radiopacities was noticed below the elevated membrane of the maxillary antrum. A radiographic intrasinus bone increase of 2.9 ± 1.4 mm was caused by the PRF filling, compared to 1.8 ± 1.1 mm by the saline filling at T4 (p < 0.05). Over the course of the one-year follow-up period, all of the implants were operating normally with no major issues. CONCLUSION: Platelet-rich fibrin when used as a filling medium alone without bone graft can cause significant ascend in height of the residual alveolar bone (HRAB). CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The degradation of the alveolar bone under the maxillary sinus following tooth loss frequently restricts the placement of the implant in the edentulous region of posterior maxilla. Numerous sinus-lifting surgery procedures and tools have been developed to address these problems. It has been a topic of debate regarding the benefits of bone grafts placed at the apical region of the implant. The sharp protrusions of the granules of bone graft may also provide a danger of membrane puncture. Recently, it was shown that regular bone gain might occur inside the maxillary antrum without the use of any bone transplant material. Additionally, if there were substances that filled the gap between the floor of the sinus and the raised sinus membrane, then the membrane of the maxillary sinus could be raised greater and for a longer period of time during the phase of formation of new bone formation.

Nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is a transcriptional signaling pathway that plays a crucial role in numerous clinical complications. Pivotal roles of Nrf2 have been proved in cancer, autoimmune diseases, neurodegeneration, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, renal injuries, respiratory conditions, gastrointestinal disturbances, and general disorders related to oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, gelatinolysis, autophagy, and fibrogenesis processes. Green tea catechins as a rich source of phenolic compounds can deal with various clinical problems and manifestations. In this review, we attempted to focus on intervention between green tea catechins and Nrf2. Green tea catechins especially epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) elucidated the protective role of Nrf2 and its downstream molecules in various disorders through Keap-1, HO-1, NQO-1, GPx, GCLc, GCLm, NF-kB cross-link, kinases, and apoptotic proteins. Subsequently, we compiled an updated expansions of the Nrf2 role as a gate to manage and protect different disorders and feasible indications of green tea catechins through this signaling pathway. The present review highlighted recent evidence-based data in silico, in vitro, and in vivo studies on an outline for future clinical trials.

During the last few months, the whole humanity is experiencing largest and most severe sudden influx of COVID-19 outbreak caused by the novel coronavirus (CoV) originated from Wuhan, China. According to the WHO reports, total 3 862 676 positive cases and 265 961 deaths have been recorded worldwide due to COVID-19 infection as of May 9, 2020. CoVs are a large family of viruses (enveloped, single-stranded RNA viruses), which includes severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and Middle East respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus (MERS-CoV). New SARS CoV2 is the members of Betacoronavirus genus. These viruses cause infections in bats, camels and humans, and a few other associated species. Despite many neurologic complications associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection, it is still unclear whether these symptoms results from direct neural injury or due to some other reason. Currently, it appears that most of the neurological symptoms of COVID-19 are nonspecific and secondary to the systemic illness. A single case of acute hemorrhagic necrotizing encephalopathy has been reported. SARS-CoV-2 associated Guillain-Barré syndrome is an atypical case. Till today, no convincing evidence is available to confirm that the SARS-CoV-2 virus directly affects nerves system in humans. However, postinfection surveillance will be necessary to identify the possible post-COVID-19 neurologic syndromes.

Objective: Brain drug delivery for effective treatment of neurodegenerative disorders is limited due to the selective permeability of blood brain barrier (BBB). During the past few years, development of novel delivery system has attracted considerable attention of formulation scientists to overcome the permeability limitation caused by BBB.Significance: Based on the outcomes of this study and taking into consideration of the unique characteristics of laponite, it can be further explored to deliver many other central nervous system acting drugs.Methods: In the present study, laponite (LAP) nanocomposites were exploited for the improved brain delivery of donepezil (DZ) following encapsulation approach due to their nano-size and positive charge at pH <9.Result: The size of prepared nanocomposites was 53.7 ± 4.0 to 137.7 ± 11.0 nm. The drug was released in a sustained manner till 120 h in phosphate buffer saline (pH 7.4) and acid phthalate buffer (pH 4.0). LAPDZ formulations inhibited acetylcholinesterase approximately by 82%, significantly higher (p < 0.05) than plain DZ (30%). Swiss albino mice exhibited enhanced brain uptake of LAPDZ administered via intravenous route. Promising pharmacokinetic parameters were observed in animals treated with LAPDZ. LAPDZ formulation showed half-life (t1/2), volume of distribution (Vd) and clearance (Cl) as 5.53 ± 0.40 h-1, 0.129 ± 0.02 L, 0.015 ± 0.002 L/h, respectively. While DZ solution showed the same parameters as 1.06 ± 0.12 h-1, 0.168 ± 0.01 L, 0.106 ± 0.013 L/h, respectively. The brain uptake of LAPDZ formulation was improved with quintuplet t1/2.Conclusion: Based on the results of present study, it is proposed that the formulated nanocomposite would result in improved patient compliance with therapeutic effect at lower doses.

The contribution of land uses in sequestering soil carbon (C) is a key question of research in tropical regions, where C emissions due to land use changes, extreme rainfall events and high temperatures can aggravate the global issue of climate change. In the present study, different pools of soil organic C were assessed, from shifting cultivation lands (jhum), rubber, tea garden and coffee plantations of Tura district in Meghalaya, which is located in Northeastern region (NER) of India. To achieve this goal, different parameters such as bulk density (BD), total organic carbon (TOC) and C pools, viz., very labile (CVL), labile (CL), less labile (CLL) and non-labile (CNL) were analyzed. The results indicated significant correlations among TOC and C pools in most land uses, except for CNL pool. Tea gardens showed the highest value of TOC stock (62.75 ± 1.47 t C ha-1) while the lowest was found in the jhum lands (33.34 ± 5.04 t C ha-1). Similarly, both the active (12.03 mg g-1) and passive (4.60 mg g-1) C pools were highest under tea gardens. CVL was found to be positively correlated with TOC and active carbon pool (ACP), while CLL was also positively correlated with passive carbon pool (PCP). This study indicates the potential of tea gardens as a promising C sequestering land use, which can be promoted in jhum lands to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change.

The high level exposure to arsenic induces marked oxidative and genotoxic stress. However, information on the potential of low level arsenic exposure in this context is still scanty. In the present study, the extent of oxidative stress and genetic toxicity induced by low arsenic exposure was explored in freshwater fish Channa punctatus. Fish were exposed to low levels of arsenic (10 and 50 µg L-1) as well as to its high level (500 µg L-1) using sodium arsenite in aquaria water for 14 consecutive days. The TBARS assay for lipid peroxidation exhibited the increased occurrence of oxidative damage in the erythrocytes of fish at both the lower and higher levels of arsenic exposure. The level of reduced glutathione was also elevated in all the three arsenic exposed groups of fish compared to control. In contrast, significant decline was observed in the levels of three major antioxidant enzymes namely, superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase, upon exposure to higher as well as lower levels of arsenic. Significant increases in micronucleus induction were found in the erythrocytes of fish even at the low levels of arsenic exposure. The study further revealed the occurrence of DNA fragmentation in the erythrocytes of fish at low arsenic exposures as well. The low level exposure to arsenic (using sodium arsenite), therefore, appeared to be capable of inducing noticeable oxidative stress as well as potential genotoxic effect in Channa punctatus. Moreover, the ability of arsenic to induce oxidative stress invariably appeared correlated with its genotoxic potential.

RESUMO

Circular RNAs (cirRNAs) are long, noncoding endogenous RNA molecules and covalently closed continuous loop without 5'-3' polarity and polyadenylated tail which are largely concentrated in the nucleus. CirRNA regulates gene expression by modulating microRNAs and functions as potential biomarker. CirRNAs can translate in vivo to link between their expression and disease. They are resistant to RNA exonuclease and can convert to the linear RNA by microRNA which can then act as competitor to endogenous RNA. This chapter summarizes the evolutionary conservation and expression of cirRNAs, their identification, highlighting various computational approaches on cirRNA, and translation with a focus on the breakthroughs and the challenges in this new field.

BACKGROUND: Levocetirizine, active R (-) enantiomer of cetirizine, is an orally active and selective H1 receptor antagonist used medically as an anti-allergic. Allergic rhinitis is a symptomatic disorder of the nose induced by inflammation mediated by immunoglobulin E (IgE) in the membrane lining the nose after allergen exposure. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the present study was to prepare rapidly disintegrating tablets of levocetirizine after its complexation with ß-cyclodextrin (ß-CD). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Levocetirizine-ß-CD complex tablets were prepared by direct compression technique using 3 synthetic superdisintegrants in different proportions. Development of the formulation in the present study was mainly based on the concentration of superdisintegrants and the properties of the drug. Nine batches of tablets were formulated and evaluated for various parameters: drug content, weight variation, water absorption ratio, wetting time, in vitro disintegration, hardness, friability, thickness uniformity, and in vitro dissolution. RESULTS: A Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) study showed that there were no significant interactions between the drug and the excipients. The prepared tablets were good in appearance and showed acceptable results for hardness and friability. The in vitro disintegrating time of the formulated tablet batches was found to be 15-35 s percentage and the drug content of tablets in all formulations was found to be between 90-102%, which complied with the limits established in the United States Pharmacopeia. CONCLUSIONS: Complexation of levocetirizine with ß-CD significantly improves the solubility of the drug. The disintegration time of the tablets was decreased with an increase in superdisintegrant amount. The tablets (batch CPX5) had a minimum disintegration time of 20 s and 99.99% of the drug was released within 10 min.

INTRODUCTION: One of the common findings encountered by the clinician at the end of orthodontic treatment is the apical root resorption. Root resorption occurs to various degrees. A severe form of root resorption is characterized by shortening of root for more than 4 mm or more than one-third of the total tooth length. A low incidence rate of resorption is observed based on radiographic findings for the diagnosis of root resorption, panoramic radiography, and periapical radiography. Hence, we evaluated the accuracy of panoramic radiographic films for assessing the root resorption in comparison with the periapical films. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included the assessment of all the cases in which pre- and post-treatment radiographs were available for analysis of the assessment of the amount of root resorption. Complete records of 80 patients were analyzed. Examination of a total of 900 teeth was done. Mean age of the patients in this study was 21 years ranging from 11 to 38 years. The majority of the patients in the present study were females. All the treatments were carried out by registered experienced orthodontists having minimum experience of more than 10 years. All the cases were divided into two study groups. Group I comprised panoramic radiographic findings, while group II consisted of periapical radiographic findings. For the measurement of crown portion, root portion, and the complete root length, magnification loops of over 100 powers with parallax correction with inbuilt grids were used. Assessment of the tooth length and the crown length was done by the same observers. All the results were analyzed by Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software version 6.0. RESULTS: Maximum amount of root resorption was observed in case of maxillary central incisors and canines among group I and II cases respectively. However, nonsignificant difference was obtained while comparing the mean root resorption in relation to maxillary incisors and canines among the two study groups. While comparing the overall value of root resorption among the two study groups, a significant difference was obtained. The maximum value of tooth length in both the groups was observed in cases of maxillary canines. Significant differences were observed while comparing the tooth length of various teeth among the two study groups. Among the deviated forms of root shape, dilacera-tion was the most common form of root shape detected in both the study groups. CONCLUSION: Periapical radiographs are more efficient in the assessment of the shape and resorption of the root. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Thorough evaluation of periapical radiographs is necessary for detection of even minute levels of root resorption.

Depression is a common comorbidity associated with epilepsy. However, the etiology of depression is difficult to establish given the heterogeneity in both epilepsy and depression. Nevertheless, the co-occurrence is so common that a bidirectional relationship between depression and epilepsy has been theorized. Persons with temporal lobe seizure foci and partial-onset epilepsy may be more vulnerable to the development of depression. In pediatrics, depression differs but may be readily identified by understanding nuances of mood states and variability of neurovegetative symptom presentation. Although no clear treatment guidance exists in the context of epilepsy, antidepressants have been relatively well studied in pediatrics and are effective and well tolerated. Anticonvulsant drugs may also improve depressive symptoms though clinical research is lacking in pediatrics. Treatment of depression may independently improve outcome for epilepsy and for quality of life. Future studies will clarify etiologies of depression in the context of epilepsy and improve the evidence base for treatment outcomes.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common comorbidity of epilepsy encountered by clinicians. However, relatively little information is available to guide optimal diagnostic and treatment strategies. Differentiating ADHD from effects of epilepsy requires careful history taking and emphasis upon characteristic symptoms and course of illness. Rating scales for ADHD are well validated and may aid clinical management. Use of antiepileptic drugs may cause cognitive or behavioral side effects yet may improve behavior in some cases. Historically, clinicians have been hesitant to treat ADHD comorbidity for fear of lowering the seizure threshold. However, an aggregate of recent evidence now suggests that stimulants may be well tolerated and effective for ADHD comorbid with epilepsy. Studies that further clarify pathophysiology and treatment outcomes are needed in order to enhance clinical efficacy and quality of life for this population.

Healthcare is experiencing a transformative phase, with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). Physical therapists (PTs) stand on the brink of a paradigm shift in education, practice, and research. Rather than visualizing AI as a threat, it presents an opportunity to revolutionize. This paper examines how large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT and BioMedLM, driven by deep ML can offer human-like performance but face challenges in accuracy due to vast data in PT and rehabilitation practice. PTs can benefit by developing and training an LLM specifically for streamlining administrative tasks, connecting globally, and customizing treatments using LLMs. However, human touch and creativity remain invaluable. This paper urges PTs to engage in learning and shaping AI models by highlighting the need for ethical use and human supervision to address potential biases. Embracing AI as a contributor, and not just a user, is crucial by integrating AI, fostering collaboration for a future in which AI enriches the PT field provided data accuracy, and the challenges associated with feeding the AI model are sensitively addressed.

With increasing interest in nickel-based electrocatalysts, three heteroleptic Ni(II) dithiolate complexes with the general formula [Ni(II)L(L')2] (1-3), L = 2-(methylene-1,1'-dithiolato)-5,5'-dimethylcyclohexane-1,3-dione and L' = triphenylphosphine (1), 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene (DPPF) (2), and 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (DPPE) (3), have been synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques (UV-vis, IR, 1H, and 31P{1H} NMR) as well as the electrochemical method. The molecular structure of complex 2 has also been determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The crystal structure of complex 2 reveals a distorted square planar geometry around the nickel metal ion with a NiP2S2 core. The cyclic voltammograms reveal a small difference in the redox properties of complexes (ΔE° = 130 mV) while the difference in the catalytic half-wave potential becomes substantial (ΔEcat/2 = 670 mV) in the presence of 15 mM CF3COOH. The common S^S-dithiolate ligand provides stability, while the rigidity effect of other ligands (DPPE (3) > DPPF (2) > PPh3 (1)) regulates the formation of the transition state, resulting in the NiIII-H intermediate in the order of 1 > 2 > 3. The foot-of-the-wave analysis supports the widely accepted ECEC mechanism for Ni-based complexes with the first protonation step as a rate-determining step. The electrocatalytic proton reduction activity follows in the order of complex 1 > 2 > 3. The comparatively lower overpotential and higher turnover frequency of complex 1 are attributed to the flexibility of the PPh3 ligand, which favours the easy formation of a transition state.

This environment is mostly used to practice professional skills, plan surgery procedures, simulate surgeries, display 3D anatomy, and rehabilitate various disorders. VR has transformed the field of rehabilitation therapy by providing immersive and engaging experiences that go beyond traditional bounds, significantly improving patient care and therapeutic results. Considering the direct impact of VR on the efficacy of the treatment for both therapists and patients, its dual significance for usability and user experience cannot be overstated. The purpose of this article is to determine the synergistic association between VR accessibility and the rehabilitation process, highlighting the significance of VR technology in designing the future of rehabilitation therapy and demonstrating how advancing VR technology can improve therapeutic outcomes despite overcoming obstacles encountered during VR usage. In conclusion, VR offers a personalized, efficient, interesting, and engaging rehabilitative environment for patients, while also assisting therapists in cultivating empathy and efficiency and encouraging innovative approaches in treatment procedures.

As for the Outcomes, they represent significant shifts resulting from the research, such as improved methods of teaching or students achieving their educational targets with better learning outcomes. Using the Triple "O" model, researchers are expected to explore educational research and studies significantly and effectively. This model provides a clear plan on how to conduct research and pay attention to the results. It is ready to change the whole scene of educational research and make good, important differences in learning.

The integration of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) into the telerehabilitation initiates a major change in the healthcare practice particularly in neurological and also orthopedic rehabilitation. This essay reflects the potential of the VR and AR in their capacity to create immersive, interactive environments that facilitate the recovery. The recent developments have illustrated the ability to enhance the patient engagement and outcomes, especially in tackling the complex motor and cognitive rehabilitation needs. The combination of artificial intelligence (AI) with VR and AR will bring the rehabilitation to the next level by enabling adaptive and responsive treatment programs provided through real-time feedback and predictive analytics. Nevertheless, the issues such as availability, cost, and digital gap among many others present huge obstacles to the mass adoption. This essay provides a very thorough review of the existing level of virtual reality and augmented reality in rehabilitation and examines the many potential gains, drawbacks, and future directions from a different perspective.
