BACKGROUND: Allergic disease affects up to 40% of the global adult population, a proportion that is increasing with environmental changes related to global warming. METHODS: We undertook a systematic review of the literature to identify and evaluate the current evidence of the impact of climate change-related environmental factors on the allergen production and the epidemiology and severity of allergic pathologies. PECO criteria were established and guided the literature searches of the PubMed and Cochrane databases (Jan 1, 2016 to Dec 31, 2021). Study outcomes were categorized and grouped to facilitate data synthesis. Outcomes were classified as significant (statistical significance <0.05), non-significant (p>0.05) or undetermined (p value not reported). Study quality was assessed using MMAT analysis. RESULTS: Of 195 studies, 40 were considered relevant and 9 of them provided data to be included in the data quantitative synthesis. Environmental factors, including the presence of pollutants, temperature, and drought, influenced the type, volume, and timing of exposure to local aeroallergens. The most relevant environmental factor was the presence of environmental pollutants, of which tropospheric ozone was the most frequently associated to changes in allergen production, prevalence, and severity of allergic disease. Also, several publications demonstrated the impact of environmental factors on the healthcare burden. CONCLUSIONS: Climate-change related environmental factors increased allergic disease in terms of prevalence, severity, and healthcare burden due to alterations in allergen exposure (volume and type) with the presence of pollutants such as ozone being the most commonly reported driver of such increase.

PURPOSE: Metachronous peritoneal metastases (MPM) following a curative surgery procedure for pT4 colon cancer is a challenging condition. Current epidemiological studies on this topic are scarce. METHODS: A retrospective multicentre trial was designed. All consecutive patients who underwent operations to treat pT4 cancers between 2015 and 2017 were reviewed. Demographic, clinical, operative, pathological and oncological follow-up variables were included. MPM were described as any oncological disease at the peritoneum, clearly different from a local recurrence. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression models were constructed. A risk stratification model was created on a cumulative factor basis. According to the calculated hazard ratio (HR), a scoring system was designed (HR < 3, 1 point; HR > 3, 2 points) and a scale from 0 to 6 was calculated for peritoneal disease-free rate (PDF-R). A risk stratification model was also created on the basis of these calculations. RESULTS: Fifty different hospitals were involved, which included a total of 1356 patients. Incidence of MPM was 13.6% at 50 months median follow-up. The strongest independent risk factors for MPM were positive pN stage [HR 3.72 (95% CI 2.56-5.41; p < 0.01) for stage III disease], tumour perforation [HR 1.91 (95% CI 1.26-2.87; p < 0.01)], mucinous or signet ring cell histology [HR 1.68 (95% CI 1.1-2.58; p = 0.02)], poorly differentiated tumours [HR 1.54 (95% CI 1.1-2.2; p = 0.02)] and emergency surgery [HR 1.42 (95% CI 1.01-2.01; p = 0.049)]. In the absence of additional risk factors, pT4 tumours showed 98% and 96% PDF-R in 1-year and 5-year periods based on Kaplan-Meier curves. CONCLUSIONS: Cumulative MPM incidence was 13.6% at 5-year follow-up. The sole presence of a pT4 tumour resulted in high rates of PDF-R at 1-year and 5-year follow-up (98% and 96% respectively). Five additional risk factors different from pT4 status itself were identified as possible MPM indicators during follow-up.

BACKGROUND: The objectives of this study were to investigate the prevalence of sIgE to galactose-α-1,3-galactose (α-gal) in individuals with acute urticaria or anaphylaxis from different geographical areas of Spain and to evaluate the relevance of demographics and lifestyle as risk factors for this immune response. METHODS: Participants were recruited from allergy departments at 14 Spanish hospitals. Patients aged 18 years or older presenting with urticaria or anaphylaxis were enrolled into one of 2 arms: cases and controls. An interviewer-administered questionnaire collecting demographic data, lifestyle habits, and the presence of cofactors was obtained from each participant. sIgE to α-gal and total IgE were determined using ImmunoCAP. sIgE levels ≥0.35 kU/L were considered a positive result. RESULTS: The study population comprised 160 cases and 126 controls. The median age was 44 years. The overall prevalence of a positive result of sIgE to α-gal was 15.7%; this was higher in cases (26.3%) than in controls (2.4%). The sIgE anti-α-gal positivity rate ranged from 37.68% (rural) to 15.38% (semiurban), and 7.85% (urban). The rates of positivity were 46.32%, (Northern), 0.72% (Center), and 0% (Mediterranean). A positive result for sIgE to α-gal was associated with a history of tick bites, participation in outdoor activities, pet ownership, and ingestion of mammalian meats or innards before the onset of symptoms. Only alcohol consumption could be implicated as a cofactor. CONCLUSION: Sensitization to α-gal in patients with urticaria or anaphylaxis differs considerably between the 3 geographical areas studied and is related to tick bites.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Biological aerosols play a vital role in the interactions between the atmosphere, biosphere, climate and public health and fungal spores are a component with allergic importance. We constructed a database in Castile & Leon (Spain) and carry out molecular-level component-resolved diagnosis to complete the air quality study carried out since 2006 by our aerobiological network (RACYL) to aid clinical diagnosis and treatment. METHODS: We reviewed a database of 19,774 patients (adults and children) with allergic respiratory disease treated in our unit during the last 12 years. We also made a component-resolved diagnosis of the molecules involved in the pathology in a randomly selected population of 150 patients. RESULTS: The dimeric glycoprotein Alt a1 from Alternaria is the most prevalent and most useful allergen in the diagnosis of patients with allergy to fungi in our area (94.4%), followed by enolase Alt a 6 (Alternaria), ribonuclease Asp f 1 of Aspergillus and mannitol dehydrogenase from Cla h 8 (Cladosporium). CONCLUSIONS: Our results have helped determine which spore molecules are most-closely associated with allergies. Molecular analysis will be useful to determine more accurate and useful immunotherapy in these patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Individuals who develop drug hypersensitivity reactions (DHRs) to chemically unrelated nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are considered cross-hypersensitive. The hallmark for this classification is that the patient presents a reaction after intake of or challenge with acetylsalicylic acid (ASA). Whether patients react to 2 or more NSAIDs while tolerating ASA remains to be studied (selective reactions, SRs). Objective: To identify patients with SRs to 2 or more NSAIDs including strong COX-1 inhibitors. METHODS: Patients who attended the Allergy Service of Hospital Infanta Leonor, Madrid, Spain with DHRs to NSAIDs between January 2011 and December 2014 were evaluated. Those with 2 or more immediate reactions occurring in less than 1 hour after intake were included. After confirming tolerance to ASA, the selectivity of the response to 2 or more NSAIDs was demonstrated by in vivo and/or in vitro testing or by controlled administration. RESULTS: From a total of 203 patients with immediate DHRs to NSAIDs, 16 (7.9%) met the inclusion criteria. The patients presented a total of 68 anaphylactic or cutaneous reactions (mean [SD], 4.2 [2.1]). Most reactions were to ibuprofen and other arylpropionic acid derivatives and to metamizole. Two different NSAIDs were involved in 11 patients and 3 in 5 patients. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with NSAID-induced anaphylaxis or urticaria/angioedema should not be considered cross-hypersensitive unless tolerance to ASA is verified.

BACKGROUND: Food allergy affects around 6% of the European population and its prevalence worldwide has been increasing in the last decades, but studies focused on investigating food allergy epidemiology in Europe are lacking. OBJECTIVE: The Cibus project was created to register the main culprit foods and their clinical manifestations in food allergic patients in Catalonia. METHODS: A specific online database was designed. Allergists from eight different Catalan hospitals registered the new diagnoses of food allergy. RESULTS: 618 food allergic patients were included. Egg and milk were the main elicitors in the early ages, while fruits and nuts were the most frequent in patients >14 years old. Fish was more frequent in children, while seafood and Anisakis allergy were more frequent in the >14-year-old group. Overall, peach was the most prevalent food eliciting an allergic reaction (10%). Food allergy diagnosis was reached using compatible clinical history and positive skin prick test to the involved food in 98% of cases. Globally, urticaria was the most frequently reported manifestation in our population (48.2%), followed by oral allergy syndrome (25.6%) and anaphylaxis (24.8%). CONCLUSIONS: The Cibus project gives a full overview of the profile of food allergic patients in Catalonia and reinforces the predominance of plant food allergies in the Mediterranean area.

BACKGROUND: Non-specific lipid transfer proteins (nsLTP) are considered to provoke allergic symptoms to plane tree pollen, which are frequently associated with peach allergy. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to clone the cDNA of plane pollen nsLTP Pla a 3, to characterize IgE-binding and allergenic potency of recombinant Pla a 3 in comparison to its natural counterpart and peach nsLTP Pru p 3. METHODS: Natural Pla a 3 was purified from plane pollen and analysed by mass spectrometry (MS). Recombinant Pla a 3 was characterized by SDS-PAGE and CD spectroscopy. Specific IgE to extract, components of plane pollen and Pru p 3 was measured by ImmunoCAP in sera of patients allergic to either plane pollen (n = 10), peach (n = 15) or both (n = 15). Biological potency of the proteins was investigated by in vitro mediator release assays and IgE cross-reactivity by competitive ELISA. RESULTS: Two Pla a 3 isoforms were identified. Recombinant Pla a 3 showed high purity, structural integrity, IgE-binding capacity comparable to nPla a 3 and biological potency. Sensitization to plane pollen extract was confirmed in 24/25 plane pollen allergics. The frequency of sensitization to Pla a 3 was 53% among patients allergic to both plane pollen and peach and 10% among plane pollen allergics tolerating peach where most patients were sensitized to Pla a 1. Pla a 3 and Pru p 3 showed strong bi-directional IgE cross-reactivity in patients allergic to peach and plane pollen, but not in peach allergics tolerating plane pollen. Levels of IgE-binding were generally higher to Pru p 3 than to Pla a 3. CONCLUSION: Sensitization to Pla a 3 is relevant in a subgroup of plane pollen allergics with concomitant peach allergy. IgE testing with Pla a 3 may serve as a marker to identify plane pollen allergic patients at risk of LTP-mediated food reactions and thereby improve in vitro diagnostic procedures.

BACKGROUND: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) act as cofactors worsening the allergic reactions induced by food allergens. AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of both lysine acetylsalicylate (L-ASA) (non-selective cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitor) and valdecoxib (selective COX-2 inhibitor) in basophils activated by peach lipid transfer protein (Pru p 3) in patients with food-dependent NSAID-induced anaphylaxis (FDNIA). METHODS: Twenty Pru p 3-allergic patients with FDNIA group, eleven peach anaphylaxis not exacerbated by NSAIDs (no-NSAID group) and 5 healthy volunteers were recruited. Basophil activation (BA) was measured as expression of CD63 (Flow(2) CAST(™) ; Bühlmann(®) ), after stimulation with Pru p 3, both alone and in combination with L-ASA (1.13, 3.38 and 6.78 mm) or valdecoxib (0.87, 7.8 and 31.25 µm). RESULTS: Basophils from no-NSAID group were significantly more reactive and sensitive to Pru p 3 than those from the FDNIA group. In both groups, an increase in BA was observed when basophils were exposed to Pru p 3 and L-ASA. In the FDNIA group, valdecoxib partially terminates the BA induced by Pru p 3, whereas in the no-NSAID group, a dual effect was observed depending on the concentration tested. CONCLUSIONS: This study indicates that subjects with food-induced anaphylaxis differ from FDNIA subjects in the higher reactivity and sensitivity of their basophils to allergen challenge. We have shown a direct effect of NSAIDs on basophils using a human model of FDNIA. Our results also suggest that selective COX2 inhibitors might be a safe alternative. BA test may be a useful tool in the study of the pathogenic mechanism of the cofactor phenomenon.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The homologous group of sweet grasses belongs to the Pooideae subfamily, but grass pollen species from other subfamilies can also cause allergy, such as Cynodon dactylon (Chloridoideae) and Phragmites communis (Arundinoideae). C dactylon and P communis have not been included in the sweet grasses homologous group because of their low cross-reactivity with other grasses. The aims of this study were to investigate the profile of sensitization to C dactylon and P communis in patients sensitized to grasses and to analyze cross-reactivity between these 2 species and temperate grasses. METHODS: Patients were skin prick tested with a grass mixture (GM). Specific IgE to GM, C dactylon, P communis, Cyn d 1, and Phl p 1 was measured by ImmunoCAP. A pool of sera was used for the immunoblot assays. Cross-reactivity was studied by ELISA and immunoblot inhibition. RESULTS: Thirty patients had sIgE to GM. Twenty-four (80%) had positive results for C dactylon, 27 (90%) for P communis, 22 (73.3%) for nCyn d 1, and 92.9% for rPhl p 1. Bands were detected in the 3 extracts by immunoblot. Inhibition of GM was not observed with C dactylon or P communis by immunoblot or ELISA inhibition. When C dactylon or P communis were used in the solid phase, GM produced almost complete inhibition. CONCLUSIONS: Eighty percent of patients sensitized to grasses were also sensitized to C dactylon and 90% were sensitized to P communis. Sensitization to these species seems to be induced by allergens different to those in sweet grasses.

Aging is an inevitable and gradual decline in several biological functions. Mitochondrial dysfunction is one of the most important hallmarks of aging. In this context, alterations in metabolites associated with mitochondrial dysfunction may serve as a significant biomarker. This study aimed to investigate the existence of a relationship between the key metabolites involved in bioenergetics metabolism and aging. 53 volunteers ranged 20-85 years participated in the study. We tested the association between different tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle metabolites, fatty acid metabolism, and amino acid metabolism with age, sex, body composition, and proxy markers of aging such as walking speed, grip strength and chair test. We found that lactic acid negatively correlated with age while several fatty acid metabolites, such as azelaic, sebacic, and linoleic acids, showed positive correlations with age (p < 0.05). Sex-specific trends, such as glycerol, and dodecanoic acid, were also observed for certain metabolites. Furthermore, citric acid levels were found to have a significant association with physical function and body composition measures. Participants with higher citric acid levels displayed improved performance in physical tests and favorable body composition indices. Additionally, fumaric acid and adipic acid showed positive correlations with fat-free body mass, while sebacic acid was negatively associated with measures of fat mass. These findings underscore the importance of understanding the role of circulating bioenergetics metabolites with age, sex variations, and their potential implications in body composition and physical performance.

Pairs of Helix aspersa neurons show an alternating magnetic field dependent frequency synchronization (AMFS) when exposed to a weak (amplitude B0 between 0.2 and 150 Gauss (G)) alternating magnetic field (AMF) of extremely low frequency (ELF, fM = 50 Hz). We have compared the AMFS patterns of discharge with: i) the synaptic activity promoted by glutamate and acetylcholine; ii) the activity induced by caffeine; iii) the bioelectric activity induced on neurons interconnected by electric synapses. AMFS activity reveals several specific features: i) a tight coincidence in time of the pattern and frequency, f, of discharge; ii) it is induced in the time interval of field application; iii) it is dependent on the intensity of the sinusoidal applied magnetic field; iv) elicited biphasic responses (excitation followed by inhibition) run in parallel for the pair of neurons; and v) some neuron pairs either spontaneously or AMF synchronized can be desynchronized under applied higher AMF. Our electron microscopy studies reveal gap-like junctions confirming our immunocytochemistry results about expression of connexin 26 (Cx26) in 4.7% of Helix neurons. AMF and carbenoxolone did not induce any significant effect on spontaneous synchronization through electric synapses.

We have investigated the noncentrosymmetric tetragonal heavy-fermion antiferromagnetic compound CeCuAl3 (T(N)=2.5 K) using inelastic neutron scattering (INS). Our INS results unequivocally reveal the presence of three magnetic excitations centered at 1.3, 9.8, and 20.5 meV. These spectral features cannot be explained within the framework of crystal-electric-field models and recourse to Kramers' theorem for a 4f(1) Ce(3+) ion. To overcome these interpretational difficulties, we have generalized the vibron model of Thalmeier and Fulde for cubic CeAl(2) to tetragonal point-group symmetry with the theoretically calculated vibron form-factor. This extension provides a satisfactory explanation for the position and intensity of the three observed magnetic excitations in CeCuAl3, as well as their dependence on momentum transfer and temperature. On the basis of our analysis, we attribute the observed series of magnetic excitations to the existence of a vibron quasibound state.

Pathogenic E. coli strains can be classified into two major groups, based on the presence of specific virulence factors: extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) and diarrheagenic E. coli (DEC). Several case reports describe that DEC can cause bloodstream infections in some rare cases. This mainly concerns a few specific sequence types that express virulence factors from both ExPEC and DEC. In this study, we retrospectively analysed 234 E. coli blood isolates with whole genome sequencing (WGS). WGS was performed on an Illumina NovaSeq6000. Genotyping was performed using BioNumerics software. The presence of genes was determined with a minimum percentage sequence identity (ID) threshold of 95% and a minimum length for sequence coverage of 95%. Three of the 234 (1.28%) isolates were defined as DEC, 182 (77.78%) as ExPEC, and 49 (20.94%) did not carry pathotype-associated virulence genes. We identified 112 different virulence genes, 48 O-antigens, and 28 H-antigens 82 STs, among the 234 analyzed isolates. ST131 and ST88 were related to healthcare-associated infections. This study provides insight into the prevalence of virulence factors in a large set of E. coli blood isolates from the UZ Brussel. It illustrates high diversity in virulence profiles and highlights the potential of DEC to carry virulence factors associated with extraintestinal infections, making it possible for unusual pathotypes to invade and survive in the bloodstream causing bacteraemia. INTRODUCTION: Adjuvant chemotherapy (CT) significally reduces the rate of relapse in +pN (stage III) colon cancer (CC) and in some pN0 (stage II) with risk factors such as pT4, vascular invasion V1, perineural invasion Pn1, and complicated tumors. However, unexpectedly, 20%-30% of pN0 present a relapse in the follow-up, which may suggest that the lymph node involvement was not discovered in the conventional histological study (CS), and its finding with a superstudy (SS) could increase the number of patients who would benefit from neoadjuvant CT. It is not possible to perform this SS in every lymph node (LN) from the specimen, but it is possible in a small group of LN which are representative of the N status (definition of sentinel node SN). The aim of our work is to state the representativeness of the SN and to analyze de number of patients who are suprastaged after the SS of the SN. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Prospective study of a series of patients who have undergone curative surgery for CC, to whom we perform selective biopsy of sentinel node (SBDN). Identification of SN was carried out with in vivo injection of the radiotracer, with ex vivo isolation of SN. Once the specimen is out, we take pictures of the surgical bed to rule out the presence of aberrant drainage routes, out of the routine oncological resection area. We performed the histological CS (Hematoxilin-Eosin stain (H-E) in conventional sections) in the rest of the LN from the mesocolon. In the SN we performed the CS and a SS with H-E in serial sections, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and molecular study with OSNA® (One Step Nucleic Acid Amplification). Diagnostic validity study od SBSN was carried out, defining the false negative (FN) as the negativity of the SN while other LN are positive (N+), as well as a valuation of the suprastaging due to the SS of the SN. RESULTS: We performed lymphatic map in 72 patients, finding the SN in 62 of them (87.3%). The 9 identification failures happened in the first 17 cases. We have not found aberrant drainage routes. A total of 1.164 LN were studied in the 62 patients (18.8 LN/patient), from which 145 are SN (2,34 SN/patient), having found 103 positive LN with the CS and 112 positive with the SS of SN (9+ LN more in 8 patients than detected with the CS). Positivity after CS in the SN group is 17.24% (25/145), while it is 8.53% in the rest (87/1.019) (P < .001). With the CS, 50% of the patients (31/62) were pN+ (4 are N+ exclusively in the SN), and after the SS of the SN, only 1 of the 31 pN0 patients (3.2%) becomes pN1a, with a definitive 51.6% of N+ in the whole series (32 N+ in the 62 patients) (5 are N+ exclusively in the SN). Exclusively with the SS of the SN, FN rate ("-SN, +others", meaning patients who are N+ having -SN) is 54.8% (17/31). With the SS of the SN, 8 of the 62 patients (12.9%) increase their total number of +LN: apart from the patient who turns from pN0 to pN1a, suprastaging from IIA to IIIB (and therefore increasing the total number of pN+ to 32), 5 of the 17 FN in the CS turns into positive (2 change the pN subindex and one is suprastaged from IIIB to IIIC), decreasing FN to 37.5% (12/32 cases). Besides, 2 patients whose SN is already positive in the CS increase the number of +SN after the SS of the SN, therefore both changing their pN subindex and one of them suprastaging from IIIB to IIIC. In summary, 8 patients increase the total number of positive SN after the SS (8/62, 12.9%), 5 of them changing the pN subindex (5/62, 12.9%), even if only 3 of them get suprastaged (3/62, 4.8%), among them the one who turns from pN0 to pN1a. CONCLUSION: Technique is valid and reproducible, with a high detection rate even with a high learning curve. It globally increases the number of affected LN in 12.9% of patients, having prognostic implications in 4.8% (suprastaging rate). Only 3.2% of pN0 patients in the CS turn to be +pN after the SS of the SN, with its therapeutic implications (prescription of adjuvant CT), which could be relevant when extrapolated to a big number of patients. The high FN rate (37.5%) prevents us from accepting the representativeness of SN as the global N status, but it is not clinically relevant in CC, as its aim is not to avoid lymphadenectomy, which remains mandatory (opposite to breast cancer or melanoma in which SN detection decides upon whether to perform or not the lymphadenectomy), but to decide which patients would benefit from adjuvant CT.

Confusion matrices have been used as a tool for the analysis of speech perception or human speech recognition (HSR) for decades. However, they are rarely employed in automatic speech recognition (ASR) mainly due to the lack of a systematic procedure for their exploration. The generalization of formal concept analysis employed in this paper provides a conceptual interpretation of confusion matrices that enables the analysis of the structure of confusions for both human and machine performances. Generalized formal concept analysis transforms confusion matrices into ordered lattices of confusion events, supporting classic results in HSR that identify a hierarchy of virtual articulatory-acoustic channels. Translating this technique into ASR, a detailed map of the relationships among the speech units employed in the system can be traced to make different sources of confusions apparent: the influence of the lexicon, segmentation errors, dialectal variations or limitations of the feature extraction procedures, among others.

SuperCam is a highly integrated remote-sensing instrumental suite for NASA's Mars 2020 mission. It consists of a co-aligned combination of Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), Time-Resolved Raman and Luminescence (TRR/L), Visible and Infrared Spectroscopy (VISIR), together with sound recording (MIC) and high-magnification imaging techniques (RMI). They provide information on the mineralogy, geochemistry and mineral context around the Perseverance Rover. The calibration of this complex suite is a major challenge. Not only does each technique require its own standards or references, their combination also introduces new requirements to obtain optimal scientific output. Elemental composition, molecular vibrational features, fluorescence, morphology and texture provide a full picture of the sample with spectral information that needs to be co-aligned, correlated, and individually calibrated. The resulting hardware includes different kinds of targets, each one covering different needs of the instrument. Standards for imaging calibration, geological samples for mineral identification and chemometric calculations or spectral references to calibrate and evaluate the health of the instrument, are all included in the SuperCam Calibration Target (SCCT). The system also includes a specifically designed assembly in which the samples are mounted. This hardware allows the targets to survive the harsh environmental conditions of the launch, cruise, landing and operation on Mars during the whole mission. Here we summarize the design, development, integration, verification and functional testing of the SCCT. This work includes some key results obtained to verify the scientific outcome of the SuperCam system.

Crenate broomrape (Orobanche crenata Forsk.) is a parasitic weed known to threaten legume crops since antiquity. It is mainly restricted to the Mediterranean Basin, Southern Europe, and the Middle East where it is an important pest in grain and forage legumes and in some apiaceous crops such as carrot and celery (1). White lupines are cultivated in acid soils, which usually are free of O. crenata infestations. However, breeders are attempting to develop white lupine cultivars adapted to alkaline soils (2). We report here findings of O. crenata infection in field trials of this new lupine germplasm in alkaline soils in experimental farms with a known history of faba bean cultivation and heavy infestation of O. crenata in Kafr El-Sheikh, Egypt and Córdoba, Spain in the spring of 2009. Symptoms were typical of O. crenata infection with reduced growth and emergence of typical O. crenata nonbranched spikes close to the lupine plants. Infection was confirmed by digging up the plants to verify the attachment of the broomrape plant to the lupine. O. crenata plants growing on lupines were fully fertile, producing viable seeds. Plant morphology was typical of O. crenata (1). Voucher specimens were deposited at the Herbarium of the Botanic Department of the University of Córdoba. To our knowledge, this is the first report of O. crenata infecting lupine and is relevant because the expected introduction of alkaline-tolerant lupine cultivars will extend its area of cultivation into fields heavily infested with Orobanche. O. crenata is highly polymorphic and could easily adapt to, recognize, and infect this new host. Development of lupine-adapted O. crenata populations should be monitored because it could represent a major constraint on lupine introduction into alkaline soils. References: (1) D. M. Joel et al.
