RESUMO

Traditional systems for indoor pressure sensing and human activity recognition (HAR) rely on costly, high-resolution mats and computationally intensive neural network-based (NN-based) models that are prone to noise. In contrast, we design a cost-effective and noise-resilient pressure mat system for HAR, leveraging Velostat for intelligent pressure sensing and a novel hyperdimensional computing (HDC) classifier that is lightweight and highly noise resilient. To measure the performance of our system, we collected two datasets, capturing the static and continuous nature of human movements. Our HDC-based classification algorithm shows an accuracy of 93.19%, improving the accuracy by 9.47% over state-of-the-art CNNs, along with an 85% reduction in energy consumption. We propose a new HDC noise-resilient algorithm and analyze the performance of our proposed method in the presence of three different kinds of noise, including memory and communication, input, and sensor noise. Our system is more resilient across all three noise types. Specifically, in the presence of Gaussian noise, we achieve an accuracy of 92.15% (97.51% for static data), representing a 13.19% (8.77%) improvement compared to state-of-the-art CNNs.

OBJECTIVES: After a successful percutaneous cylindrical electrode five-to-seven-day trial of spinal cord stimulation, subsequent permanent surgical paddle lead (SPL) placement can be impeded by epidural scar induced by the trial leads (TLs). Our goal was to determine whether a delay between TL and subsequent SPL placement provokes enhanced epidural scarring with an increased need for laminotomy extension required for scar removal for optimal SPL placement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a prospectively maintained data base, a single-facility/surgeon retrospective study identified 261 patients with newly placed thoracolumbar SPLs from June 2013 to November 2023. Data were obtained from the patients' charts, including, but not limited to, timing between TL and SPL, operative time, and need for extension of laminotomy. RESULTS: We found that the need for laminotomy extension due to TL epidural scarring and longer operative times was not required in our patients if the SPL was placed within ten days of placement of the TL (0/26), leading to shorter operative times in those with SPL placed after ten days (122.42 ± 10.72 minutes vs 140.75 ± 4.72 minutes; p = 0.005). We found no association with other medical comorbidities that may be confounding factors leading to epidural scarring/extension of laminotomy or association with level of SPL placement, size of the spinal canal, or indication for SPL placement. CONCLUSIONS: TL placement leads to scarring in the epidural space that appears to mature after ten days of its placement. In approximately 34% of patients, this leads to prolonged operative time owing to the need for extension of laminotomy and subsequent clearing of epidural scar for optimal SPL placement.

Purpose To determine reader and computed tomography (CT) scan variability for measurement of coronary plaque volume. Materials and Methods This HIPAA-compliant study followed Standards for Reporting of Diagnostic Accuracy guidelines. Baseline coronary CT angiography was performed in 40 prospectively enrolled subjects (mean age, 67 years ± 6 [standard deviation]) with asymptomatic hyperlipidemia by using a 320-detector row scanner (Aquilion One Vision; Toshiba, Otawara, Japan). Twenty of these subjects underwent coronary CT angiography repeated on a separate day with the same CT scanner (Toshiba, group 1); 20 subjects underwent repeat CT performed with a different CT scanner (Somatom Force; Siemens, Forchheim, Germany [group 2]). Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) and Bland-Altman analysis were used to assess interreader, intrareader, and interstudy reproducibility. Results Baseline and repeat coronary CT angiography scans were acquired within 19 days ± 6. Interreader and intrareader agreement rates were high for total, calcified, and noncalcified plaques for both CT scanners (all ICCs ≥ 0.96) without bias. Scanner variability was ±18.4% (coefficient of variation) with same-vendor follow-up. However, scanner variability increased to ±29.9% with different-vendor follow-up. The sample size to detect a 5% change in noncalcified plaque volume with 90% power and an α error of .05 was 286 subjects for same-CT scanner follow-up and 753 subjects with different-vendor follow-up. Conclusion State-of-the-art coronary CT angiography with same-vendor follow-up has good scan-rescan reproducibility, suggesting a role of coronary CT angiography in monitoring coronary artery plaque response to therapy. Differences between coronary CT angiography vendors resulted in lower scan-rescan reproducibility. © RSNA, 2016 Online supplemental material is available for this article.

Background: Schools are high-risk settings for SARS-CoV-2 transmission, but necessary for children's educational and social-emotional wellbeing. Previous research suggests that wastewater monitoring can detect SARS-CoV-2 infections in controlled residential settings with high levels of accuracy. However, its effective accuracy, cost, and feasibility in non-residential community settings is unknown. Methods: The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness and accuracy of community-based passive wastewater and surface (environmental) surveillance to detect SARS-CoV-2 infection in neighborhood schools compared to weekly diagnostic (PCR) testing. We implemented an environmental surveillance system in nine elementary schools with 1700 regularly present staff and students in southern California. The system was validated from November 2020 - March 2021. Findings: In 447 data collection days across the nine sites 89 individuals tested positive for COVID-19, and SARS-CoV-2 was detected in 374 surface samples and 133 wastewater samples. Ninety-three percent of identified cases were associated with an environmental sample (95% CI: 88% - 98%); 67% were associated with a positive wastewater sample (95% CI: 57% - 77%), and 40% were associated with a positive surface sample (95% CI: 29% - 52%). The techniques we utilized allowed for near-complete genomic sequencing of wastewater and surface samples. Interpretation: Passive environmental surveillance can detect the presence of COVID-19 cases in non-residential community school settings with a high degree of accuracy. Brain-inspired Hyper-dimensional(HD) computing is a novel and efficient computing paradigm. However, highly parallel architectures such as Processing-in-Memory(PIM) are bottle-necked by reduction operations required such as accumulation. To reduce this bottle-neck of HD computing in PIM, we present Stochastic-HD that combines the simplicity of operations in Stochastic Computing (SC) with the complex task solving capabilities of the latest HD computing algorithms. Stochastic-HD leverages deterministic SC, which enables all of HD operations to be done as highly parallel bitwise operations and removes all reduction operations, thus improving the throughput of PIM. To this end, we propose an in-memory hardware design for Stochastic-HD that exploits its high level of parallelism and robustness to approximation. Our hardware uses in-memory bitwise operations along with associative memory-like operations to enable a fast and energy-efficient implementation. With Stochastic-HD, we were able to reach a comparable accuracy with the Baseline-HD. Furthermore, by proposing an integrated Stochastic-HD retraining approach Stochastic-HD is able to reduce the accuracy loss to just 0.3%. We additionally accelerate the retraining process in our hardware design to create an end-to-end accelerator for Stochastic-HD. Finally, we also add support for HD Clustering to Stochastic-HD, which is the first to map the HD Clustering operations to the stochastic domain. As compared to the best PIM design for HD, Stochastic-HD is also 4.4% more accurate and 43.1× more energy-efficient.

Increasing data volumes on high-throughput sequencing instruments such as the NovaSeq 6000 leads to long computational bottlenecks for common metagenomics data preprocessing tasks such as adaptor and primer trimming and host removal. Here, we test whether faster recently developed computational tools (Fastp and Minimap2) can replace widely used choices (Atropos and Bowtie2), obtaining dramatic accelerations with additional sensitivity and minimal loss of specificity for these tasks. Furthermore, the taxonomic tables resulting from downstream processing provide biologically comparable results. However, we demonstrate that for taxonomic assignment, Bowtie2's specificity is still required. We suggest that periodic reevaluation of pipeline components, together with improvements to standardized APIs to chain them together, will greatly enhance the efficiency of common bioinformatics tasks while also facilitating incorporation of further optimized steps running on GPUs, FPGAs, or other architectures. We also note that a detailed exploration of available algorithms and pipeline components is an important step that should be taken before optimization of less efficient algorithms on advanced or nonstandard hardware. IMPORTANCE In shotgun metagenomics studies that seek to relate changes in microbial DNA across samples, processing the data on a computer often takes longer than obtaining the data from the sequencing instrument. Recently developed software packages that perform individual steps in the pipeline of data processing in principle offer speed advantages, but in practice they may contain pitfalls that prevent their use, for example, they may make approximations that introduce unacceptable errors in the data. Here, we show that differences in choices of these components can speed up overall data processing by 5-fold or more on the same hardware while maintaining a high degree of correctness, greatly reducing the time taken to interpret results. This is an important step for using the data in clinical settings, where the time taken to obtain the results may be critical for guiding treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To comprehensively evaluate quantitative parameters derived from routine coronary CT angiography (cCTA) for predicting lesion-specific ischemia in comparison to invasive fractional flow reserve (FFR). BACKGROUND: The ability of cCTA to gauge lesion-specific ischemia is limited. Several quantitative parameters have been proposed to enhance the specificity of cCTA, such as morphologic indices (lesion length/minimal lumen diameter(4) [LL/MLD(4)]; percentage aggregate plaque volume [%APV]) and a measure of intracoronary contrast gradients (corrected coronary opacification [CCO]). METHODS: Forty-nine patients who had undergone cCTA followed by FFR within 3 months were included. An experienced observer visually assessed all cCTA studies and derived multiple measures characterizing the lesion of interest, including LL, MLD, minimal lumen area (MLA), LL/MLD(4), remodeling index, %APV, and CCO. Lesion-specific ischemia was considered with FFR <0.8. RESULTS: Among 56 lesions, 13 were flow-obstructing by FFR. On univariate analysis, LL, MLD, LL/MLD(4), and CCO showed discriminatory power. The area under the curve of LL/MLD(4) (0.909) was significantly greater compared with MLD (0.802, P = 0.014), LL (0.739, P = 0.041), and CCO (0.809), although the latter did not reach statistical significance (P = 0.175). On multivariate regression, LL/MLD(4) was the only independent predictor of lesion-specific ischemia (odds ratio 2.021, P = 0.001). Moreover, LL/MLD(4) compared favorably to visual cCTA evaluation. CONCLUSION: LL/MLD(4) derived from routine cCTA can enhance the detection of lesion-specific ischemia and may be superior to other described quantitative parameters.

Red wine is composed of a complex matrix of compounds that can interfere with analysis. A high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) procedure was developed to efficiently analyze organic acids, sugars, glycerol, and ethanol in Cynthiana (Vitis aestivalis) wine. Standard laboratory procedures (pH, titratable acidity, and color attributes) and HPLC were found reproducible for Cynthiana wine. HPLC recovery efficiency was determined by analysis of spiked and unspiked samples (model, Cynthiana, and Syrah (Vitis vinifera) wines). Although recovery of components was greater in the model wine, recovery in Cynthiana and Syrah wine was comparable. The HPLC procedure was further compared to commercial rapid enzyme analysis tests using model, Cynthiana, and Syrah wines. HPLC analyses were more accurate than enzymatic tests for determining components in the model, Cynthiana, and Syrah wines. Considering the complexity of the wines analyzed, reproducibility and recovery of the HPLC procedure was demonstrated and showed improvement and precision when compared to existing methods.

Membrane and resin ion-exchange technology was used for pH reduction and production of Cynthiana (Vitis aestivalis) wine, which can have high pH and high titratable acidity. Wine attributes were monitored during storage for 6 months at 21 and 38 degrees C. Nonadjusted Cynthiana wine (pH 4.1) was compared to ion-exchange-adjusted wine (pH 3.5). Ion exchange lowered the pH and potassium content and increased the titratable acidity of wine without having detrimental effects on color and phenolics. No trends were found to indicate differences between manufacturers of membranes and resins on pH-adjusted Cynthiana wine. Wine treated with membrane ion exchange was higher in color density and phenolics than resin-treated wine. During storage at both temperatures, the quality of the wine decreased, with greater degradation at 38 degrees C. Ion exchange decreased the pH of Cynthiana wine without negatively affecting wine quality attributes. A panel familiar with characteristics of Cynthiana wine found that the color and flavor of the pH-adjusted wine was improved.
