Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common chronic disease characterized by airflow obstruction, which seriously threatens people's health. The COPD mouse model was established with cigarette smoke induction. Hematoxylin-eosin staining and Masson staining were carried out to observe the pathological changes of lung tissues in COPD mice. RTEL1 was silenced in COPD mice, and immunohistochemistry was used to detect RTEL1, ki67 and Caspase-3 expression. The role of RTEL1 in inflammation were evaluated by ELISA, and the impacts of RTEL1 on M1 and M2 macrophage markers (iNOS and CD206) were evaluated by qPCR and western blotting. In COPD model, there was an increase in the number of inflammatory cells, with slightly disorganized cell arrangement, unclear hierarchy, condensed and solidified nuclei, while knockdown of RTEL1 improved the inflammatory infiltration. Moreover, knockdown of RTEL1 reduced ki67-positive cells and increased Caspase-3 positive cells in COPD group. The increased inflammatory factors (IL-1ß, MMP-9, TNF-α, IL-4, IL-6, and IL-23) in COPD were suppressed by knockdown of RTEL1, while iNOS was raised and CD206 was inhibited. In conclusion, knockdown of RTEL1 promoted M1 and inhibited M2 macrophage polarization and inflammation to alleviate COPD.

Early blight of tomato caused by Alternaria solani results in significant crop losses. In this study, Bacillus subtilis J3 and Pseudomonas fluorescens J8 were co-cultured as a synthetic microbial community (BCA) for synergistic biocontrol of A. solani, and the inhibition mechanism was investigated. BCA presented an inhibition ration against A. solani at 94.91%, which lowered the disease incidence by 38.26-42.87%; reduced peroxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase activity of tomatoes by 73.11-90.22%; and promoted the biomass by 66.91-489.21%. With BCA protection, the relative expression of tomato resistance genes (including gPAL2, SWRKY, PR-10, and CHI) in roots and leaves was 12.83-90.70% lower than without protection. BCA also significantly altered the rhizosphere and phyllosphere microbial community. The abundance of potentially beneficial bacteria, including Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Arthrobacter, Lysobacter, and Rhizobium, elevated by 6.58-192.77%. They were negatively correlated with resistance gene expression, indicating their vital involvement in disease control. These results provided essential information on the synergistic biocontrol mechanism of bacteria against pathogens, which could contribute to developing novel biocontrol strategies. KEY POINTS: • Bacillus and Pseudomonas present a synergistic biocontrol effect against A. solani. • Biocontrol prevents pathogen damage and improves tomato growth and systemic resistance. • Beneficial bacteria thrive in the rhizosphere is the key to microbial regulation.

Resistance to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in chemotherapy and recurrence of colorectal tumors is a serious concern that impedes improvements to clinical outcomes. In the present study, we found that conditioned medium (CM) derived from 5-FU-resistant HCT-8/FU cells reduced 5-FU chemosensitivity in HCT-8 colon cancer cells, with corresponding changes to number and morphology of Cajal bodies (CBs) as observable nuclear structures. We found that U2AF homology motif kinase 1 (UHMK1) altered CB disassembly and reassembly and regulated the phosphorylation of coilin, a major component of CBs. This subsequently resulted in a large number of variations in RNA alternative splicing that affected cell survival following 5-FU treatment, induced changes in intracellular phenotype, and transmitted preadaptive signals to adjacent cells in the tumor microenvironment (TME). Our findings suggest that CBs may be useful for indicating drug sensitivity or resistance in tumor cells in response to stress signals. The results also suggest that UHMK1 may be an important factor for maintaining CB structure and morphology by regulating splicing events, especially following cellular exposure to cytotoxic drugs. The wetting property of a solid surface has been a hotspot for centuries, and many studies suggest that the hydrophobicity is highly related to the polar components. However, the underlying mechanism of polar moieties on the hydrophobicity remains unclear. Here, we tailor the surface polar moieties of epoxy resin (EP) by ozone modification and assess their wetting properties. Our results show that, for the modified EP with more (60.54%) polar moieties, the polar effect on hydrophobicity cannot be empirically observed. To reveal the underlying mechanism, the absorption parameters, including equilibrium distance, adsorption radius, and effective adsorption sites for water on EP before and after ozone treatment, are calculated on the basis of molecular simulations. After ozone modification, the equilibrium distance (from 1.95 to 1.70 Å), adsorption radius (from 3.80 to 4.50 Å), and effective adsorption sites (from 1 to 2) change slightly and the EP surface remains hydrophobic, although the polar groups significantly increase. Therefore, it is concluded that the wetting properties of solid surfaces are dominated by the equilibrium distance, adsorption radius, and effective adsorption sites for water on solids, and the nonlinear relationship between polar groups and hydrophilicity is clarified.

Anterior gradient 2 (AGR2), a protein disulfide isomerase (PDI), is a multifunctional protein under physiological and pathological conditions. In this study we investigated the roles of AGR2 in regulating cholesterol biogenesis, lipid-lowering efficiency of lovastatin as well as in protection against hypercholesterolemia/statin-induced liver injury. We showed that AGR2 knockout significantly decreased hepatic and serum total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in mice with whole-body or hepatocyte-specific Agr2-null mutant, compared with the levels in their wild-type littermates fed a normal chow diet (NCD) or high-fat diet (HFD). In contrast, mice with AGR2 overexpression (Agr2/Tg) exhibited an increased cholesterol level. Mechanistic studies revealed that AGR2 affected cholesterol biogenesis via activation of AKT/sterol regulatory element-binding protein-2 (SREBP2), to some extent, in a PDI motif-dependent manner. Moreover, elevated AGR2 led to a significant decrease in the lipid-lowering efficacy of lovastatin (10 mg· kg-1· d-1, ip, for 2 weeks) in mice with hypercholesterolemia (hyperCho), which was validated by results obtained from clinical samples in statin-treated patients. We showed that lovastatin had limited effect on AGR2 expression, but AGR2 was inducible in Agr2/Tg mice fed a HFD. Further investigations demonstrated that drug-induced liver toxicity and inflammatory reactions were alleviated in hypercholesterolemic Agr2/Tg mice, suggesting the dual functions of AGR2 in lipid management and hyperCho/statin-induced liver injury. Importantly, the AGR2-reduced lipid-lowering efficacy of lovastatin was attenuated, at least partially, by co-administration of a sulfhydryl-reactive compound allicin (20 mg· kg-1· d-1, ip, for 2 weeks). These results demonstrate a novel role of AGR2 in cholesterol metabolism, drug resistance and liver protection, suggesting AGR2 as a potential predictor for selection of lipid-lowering drugs in clinic.

BACKGROUND: Coffin-Siris syndrome (CSS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by intellectual disability, developmental delay, and characteristic facial features. Few patients with cutaneous phenotype in this rare syndrome have been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we describe a 12-year-old Chinese girl diagnosed with CSS, who was referred to our hospital because of intellectual disability and short stature. Prominent characteristics of the cutaneous system were observed: (1) A congenital giant nevus from the left frontal and temporal regions to the entire left scalp; and (2) multiple melanocytic nevi on the face and trunk. Whole exome sequencing revealed a novel heterozygous variant in the ARID1B gene. Recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) was given for short stature, and resulted in significantly improved height. No enlargement or malignant transformation of nevi occurred within 4 years of follow-up. CONCLUSION: The symptoms in cutaneous system is noteworthy,which may be a neglected phenotype in CSS.The therapeutic response of growth hormone is effective in this patient and no tumor related signs were found.

OBJECTIVES: To study the clinical features and fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3) gene mutations of children with achondroplasia (ACH) through an analysis of 17 cases. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical data and FGFR3 gene detection results of 17 children with ACH who were diagnosed from January 2009 to October 2021. RESULTS: Of the 17 children with ACH, common clinical manifestations included disproportionate short stature (100%, 17/17), macrocephaly (100%, 17/17), trident hand (82%, 14/17), and genu varum (88%, 15/17). The common imaging findings were rhizomelic shortening of the long bones (100%, 17/17) and narrowing of the lumbar intervertebral space (88%, 15/17). Major complications included skeletal dysplasia (100%, 17/17), middle ear dysfunction (82%, 14/17), motor/language developmental delay (88%, 15/17), chronic pain (59%, 10/17), sleep apnea (53%, 9/17), obesity (41%, 7/17), foramen magnum stenosis (35%, 6/17), and hydrocephalus (24%, 4/17). All 17 children (100%) had FGFR3 mutations, among whom 13 had c.1138G>A hotspot mutations of the FGFR3 gene, 2 had c.1138G>C mutations of the FGFR3 gene, and 2 had unreported mutations, with c.1252C>T mutations of the FGFR3 gene in one child and c.445+2_445+5delTAGG mutations of the FGFR3 gene in the other child. CONCLUSIONS: This study identifies the unreported mutation sites of the FGFR3 gene, which extends the gene mutation spectrum of ACH. ACH is a progressive disease requiring lifelong management through multidisciplinary collaboration.

Combining NO removal and NH3 synthesis, electrochemical NO reduction reaction (NORR) toward NH3 is considered as a novel and attractive approach. However, exploring suitable catalysts for NO-to-NH3 conversion is still a formidable task due to the lack of a feasible method. Herein, utilizing systematic first-principles calculations, a rational strategy for screening efficient single-atom catalysts (SACs) for NO-to-NH3 conversion is reported. This strategy runs the gamut of stability, NO adsorbability, NORR activity, and NH3 selectivity. Taking transition metal atom embedded in C2 N (TM-C2 N) as an example, its validity is demonstrated and Zr-C2 N is selected as a stable NO-adsorbable NORR catalyst with high NH3 selectivity. Therefore, this work has established a theoretical landscape for screening SACs toward NO-to-NH3 conversion, which will contribute to the application of SACs for NORR and other electrochemical reactions.

BACKGROUND: Tumor microenvironment (TME) critically contributed to the malignant progression of transformed cells and the chemical responses to chemotherapy reagents. Osteopontin (OPN) is a secretory onco-protein with several splicing isoforms, all of which were known to regulate tumor growth and able to alter cell-cell or cell-TME communication, however, the exact role and regulation of the OPN splicing isoforms was not well understood. METHODS: In this study, the effects of conditioned medium from the culture of OPN splicing isoforms overexpressing cells on cell functions were evaluated. The methods of nuclear calcium reporter assays and subcellular distribution of nuclear factor of activated T cells c2 (NFATc2) assays were used to investigate the molecular mechanism underlining the roles of OPN splicing isoforms. RESULTS: We found that the survival of NSCLC cells treated with cisplatin was increased by secretory OPNc in the condition medium, where reduction of apoptosis by OPNc was associated with the activation of cellular calcium signals and subsequent nuclear translocation of NFATc2. CONCLUSIONS: The results revealed a mechanism of OPN and downstream signal for tumor cells to survive in chemo-stressed TME, which emphasized the importance of secretory proteins in alternative splicing isoforms. Our study not only demonstrated the importance of OPN neutralization for anti-tumor effects, but also implied that modulation in calcium/NFATc2/ROS axis could be a novel approach for improving the long-term outcome of NSCLC treatment.

PURPOSE: Genetic polymorphisms act a crucial role in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) progression. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between CYP3A4 variants and COPD risk. METHODS: We carried out a case-control study of 821 individuals (313 patients and 508 healthy subjects) to identify the correlation of CYP3A4 SNPs with COPD risk in the Hainan Han population. The association was evaluated by Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS: Our study showed that rs4646437 polymorphism was related to a significantly increased susceptibility to COPD (OR 1.45, 95% CI = 1.10-1.90, p = 0.008). Stratified analyses indicated that rs4646437 polymorphism was significantly related to an increased risk of COPD in males (OR 1.95, 95% CI = 1.19-3.20, p = 0.008). However, rs4646440 played a protective role in females (OR 0.54, 95% CI = 0.31-0.93, p = 0.024). Rs4646437 was found to significantly improve the risk of COPD in smokers (OR 1.67, 95% CI = 1.12-2.48, p = 0.011). While rs4646440 had a significantly lower susceptibility to COPD in non-smokers (OR 0.64, 95% CI = 0.45-0.90, p = 0.010). Haplotype analysis revealed that Ars4646440Trs35564277 haplotype of CYP3A4 was found to increase the risk of COPD in non-smokers (OR 1.71, 95% CI = 1.04-2.82, p = 0.034). CONCLUSION: Our result gives a new understanding of the association between CYP3A4 gene and COPD in the Hainan Han population.

Heteroatom doped atomically dispersed Fe1 -NC catalysts have been found to show excellent activity toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the origin of the enhanced activity is still controversial because the structure-function relationship governing the enhancement remains elusive. Herein, sulfur(S)-doped Fe1 -NC catalyst was obtained as a model, which displays a superior activity for ORR towards the traditional Fe-NC materials. 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy revealed that incorporation of S in the second coordination sphere of Fe1 -NC can induce the transition of spin polarization configuration. Operando 57 Fe Mössbauer spectra definitively identified the low spin single-Fe3+ -atom of C-FeN4 -S moiety as the active site for ORR. Moreover, DFT calculations unveiled that lower spin state of the Fe center after the S doping promotes OH* desorption process. This work elucidates the underlying mechanisms towards S doping for enhancing ORR activity, and paves a way to investigate the function of broader heteroatom doped Fe1 -NC catalysts to offer a general guideline for spin-state-determined ORR.

BACKGROUND: Drug resistance to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and recurrence after chemotherapy in colorectal cancer remain a challenge to be resolved for the improvement of patient outcomes. It is recognized that a variety of secretory proteins released from the tumor cells exposed to chemo-drugs into the tumor microenvironment (TME) contributed to the cell-to-cell communication, and altered the drug sensitivity. One of these important factors is osteopontin (OPN), which exists in several functional forms from alternative splicing and post-translational processing. In colon cancer cells, increased total OPN expression was observed during the progression of tumors, however, the exact role and regulation of the OPN splicing isoforms was not well understood. METHODS: We assayed precisely the abundance of major OPN splicing isoforms under 5-FU treatments in colon cancer cell lines with different sensitivities to 5-FU, and also evaluated the effects of the condition medium from OPN splicing isoforms overexpressed cells on cell functions. The methods of nuclear calcium reporter assays and ChIP (chromatin immunoprecipitation) assays were used to investigate the molecular mechanism underlining the production of OPN isoforms. RESULTS: We discovered that OPNc was a most increased splicing isoform to a significant abundance following 5-FU treatment of colon cancer cells. OPNc as a secretory protein in the conditioned medium exerted a more potent effect to promote cell survival in 5-FU than other OPN isoforms. The kinetic response of nuclear calcium signals could be used to indicate an immediate effect of the conditioned medium containing OPNc and other isoforms. Methyl-CpG binding protein 2 (MeCP2) was identified to regulate the splicing of opn gene, where the phosphorylation of MeCP2 at S421 site, possibly by calmodulin dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) was required. CONCLUSIONS: The results demonstrated that the production of OPNc was highly controlled under epigenetic regulations, where MeCP2 and the activation of nuclear calcium signaling were involved. It was also suggested that OPNc could transmit the stress signal of cells upon chemotherapy in TME and promoted the survival of adjacent colon cancer cells.

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a complex pulmonary disease. Cytochrome P450 family 4 subfamily F member 2 (CYP4F2) belongs to cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes responsible for metabolism, its single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were reported to be involved in metabolism in the development of many diseases. The study aimed to assess the relation between CYP4F2 SNPs and COPD risk in the Hainan Han population. METHOD: We genotyped five SNPs in CYP4F2 in 313 cases and 508 controls by Agena MassARRAY assay. The association between CYP4F2 SNPs and COPD risk were assessed by χ2 test and genetic models. Besides, logistic regression analysis was introduced into the calculation for odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: Allele model analysis indicated that rs3093203 A was significantly correlated with an increased risk of COPD. Also, rs3093193 G and rs3093110 G were associated with a reduced COPD risk. In the genetic models, we found that rs3093203 was related to an increased COPD risk, while rs3093193 and rs3093110 were related to a reduced risk of COPD. After gender stratification, rs3093203, rs3093193 and rs3093110 showed the association with COPD risk in males. With smoking stratification, rs3093144 was significantly associated with an increased risk of COPD in smokers. CYP4F2 SNPs were significantly associated with COPD risk. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings illustrated potential associations between CYP4F2 polymorphisms and COPD risk. However, large-scale and well-designed studies are needed to determine conclusively the association between the CYP4F2 SNPs and COPD risk.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a high incidence in the elderly and significantly affects the quality of life. CYP2C9 and CYP2C19 play an important role in tobacco-related diseases and inflammatory reactions. Thus, we aim to investigate the association between CYP2C9/CYP2C19 polymorphisms and the risk of COPD. In this study, a total of 821 subjects were recruited which include 313 COPD cases and 508 healthy controls. Seven SNPs of CYP2C9/CYP2C19 were selected for genotyping. The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were calculated using logistic regression analysis to evaluate the association between COPD risk and CYP2C9/CYP2C19 polymorphisms. Our study showed that A allele of rs9332220 in CYP2C9 was associated with reducing COPD risk (OR = 0.64, 95% CI = 0.43-0.94, p = 0.021). And rs111853758 G allele carrier could significantly decrease 0.35-fold COPD risk compared with T allele carrier (OR = 0.65, 95% CI = 0.45-0.96, p = 0.027). Furthermore, sex-based stratification analysis showed that rs9332220 and rs111853758 polymorphisms were associated with the risk of COPD in males. This is the first study to investigate the association between CYP2C9 and CYP2C19 genetic polymorphisms and COPD risk, which may give a new perspective on the prevention and diagnosis of COPD.

OBJECTIVE: To study the association between clinical phenotypes and genotypes in children with Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD)/Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) so as to provide a theoretical basis for disease management, gene therapy, and prenatal diagnosis. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed for the clinical data and gene detection results of 52 children with BMD/DMD. Multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) was used to detect the DMD gene. The children with negative results of MLPA were further screened by exon chip capture combined with next-generation sequencing (NGS). The mothers of 20 probands were validated by sequencing. RESULTS: The pathogenic genes for BMD/DMD were detected in 50 children by MLPA and NGS, with a detection rate of 96%. Among the 52 children, 36 (69%) had gene deletion, 7 (13%) had duplication, and 7 (13%) had micromutation. Among the 43 children with deletion/duplication, 32 had DMD and 11 had BMD; 37 children (86%) met the reading frame rule, among whom 27 (96%) had DMD and 10 (67%) had BMD. All 7 children with micromutation had DMD. CONCLUSIONS: The reading frame rule has an extremely high predictive value for DMD but a limited predictive value for BMD.

In this work, an enrichment approach for the profiling of N-linked glycans was developed by utilizing a highly porous 3D graphene composite fabricated from graphene oxide nanosheets and a phenol-formaldehyde polymer via graphitization and KOH activation. In tailoring the large surface area (ca. 2213 m2 g-1) and 3D-layered mesoporous structure, the 3D graphene composite demonstrated not only high efficiency in glycan enrichment but also the size-exclusion effect against residual protein interference. For a standard protein ovalbumin digest, 26 N-linked glycans were identified with good repeatability, and the detection limit was as low as 0.25 ng µL-1 with the identification of 13 N-linked glycans (S/N > 10). When the mass ratio of the ovalbumin digest to the interfering proteins, i.e., bovine serum albumin and ovalbumin was 1 : 2000 : 2000, 18 N-linked glycans could still be detected with sufficient signal intensities. From a 60 nL minute complex human serum sample, up to 53 N-linked glycans with S/N > 10 were identified after the 3D graphene enrichment, while only 20 N-linked glycans were identified by the porous graphitized carbon material used for comparison. In addition, the application of the 3D graphene composite in profiling the up-regulated and down-regulated N-linked glycans from the real clinical serum samples of ovarian cancer patients confirmed the potential of the 3D graphene composite for analyzing minute and complicated biological samples.

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a disease characterized by airflow limitation. It is not completely reversible and shows progressive development. ZNF208 rs8105767 affects telomere length, although the impact of telomere on COPD is still controversial. In the present study, we aimed to explore the impact of the ZNF208 gene polymorphism on telomere length and also that of telomere length on COPD in the Hainan Li population. METHODS: In total, 270 COPD patients and 288 controls were recruited. Telomere length was measured by a quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Five single nucleotide polymorphisms in ZNF208 were selected and genotyping was performed using MassARRAY software (Agena Bioscience Co. Ltd, San Diego, CA, USA). Differences in telomere length among the subjects with three genotypes of related genes were assessed using analysis of variance. Unconditional logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios (OR) as the indicator of association between telomere length and COPD risk. RESULTS: Relative telomere length in the COPD group and control group was 0.66 ± 0.47 and 1.44 ± 0.89, respectively. We grouped according to a median of 0.8284 for telomere length and observed that the risk of COPD for individuals with a telomere length less than 0.8284 is 2.92 times that for individuals with a telomere length longer than 0.8284 (OR = 2.92, 95% confidence interval = 2.01-4.25, p = 1.91 × 10-8 ). Subjects carrying the G allele of rs2188972 had a longer telomere length. Subjects carrying the carrying the CA genotype of rs8103163 and AC genotype of rs7248488 had a longer telomere length compared to wild-type individuals. CONCLUSIONS: Shorter telomeres increase COPD risk and the ZNF208 polymorphism affects telomere length in COPD patients.

Hemorrhagic stroke which consists of subarachnoid hemorrhage and intracerebral hemorrhage is a dominant cause of death and disability worldwide. Although great efforts have been made, the physiological mechanisms of these diseases are not fully understood and effective pharmacological interventions are still lacking. Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine), a neurohormone produced by the pineal gland, is a broad-spectrum antioxidant and potent free radical scavenger. More importantly, there is extensive evidence demonstrating that melatonin confers neuroprotective effects in experimental models of hemorrhagic stroke. Multiple molecular mechanisms such as antioxidant, anti-apoptosis, and anti-inflammation, contribute to melatonin-mediated neuroprotection against brain injury after hemorrhagic stroke. This review article aims to summarize current knowledge regarding the beneficial effects of melatonin in experimental models of hemorrhagic stroke and explores the underlying mechanisms. We propose that melatonin is a promising neuroprotective candidate that is worthy of further evaluation for its potential therapeutic applications in hemorrhagic stroke.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the changes of pulmonary function and fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) in the standardized treatment of bronchial asthma in children. METHODS: A total of 254 children who were newly diagnosed with acute exacerbation of bronchial asthma were selected as asthma group, and they were divided into two subgroups: asthma with concurrent rhinitis and asthma without concurrent rhinitis. All patients received the standardized management and treatment for one year. The pulmonary function parameters included forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), peak expiratory flow (PEF), maximal mid-expiratory flow (MMEF), and mid-expiratory flow at 25%, 50%, and 75% of vital capacity (MEF25, MEF50, and MEF75). The FeNO levels were measured before treatment and at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after treatment. Another 62 healthy children were selected as the control group, and the pulmonary function and FeNO levels were measured only once. RESULTS: During one year of standardized treatment, FEV1, PEF, MMEF, MEF25, MEF50, and MEF75 gradually increased, and FeNO levels gradually decreased (P<0.05). Indicators of large airway function, such as FEV1 and PEF, almost returned to normal after 6 months of treatment; indicators of small airway function, such as MMEF, MEF25, MEF50, and MEF75 almost returned to normal after 9 months of treatment; there were no significant differences in the above indices between the asthma group and the control group after one year of treatment (P>0.05). However, the asthma group had a significantly higher FeNO levels than the control group after one year of treatment (P<0.05). The asthmatic patients with concurrent rhinitis had significantly higher FeNO levels than those without concurrent rhinitis before treatment and 3 months after treatment (P<0.05). Before treatment, there was a significant negative correlation between FeNO levels and pulmonary function parameters (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: With the standardized treatment of bronchial asthma in children, pulmonary function parameters gradually increase and FeNO levels gradually decrease. The recovery of large airway function occurs earlier than the recovery of small airway function. Furthermore, the effect of rhinitis on airway responsiveness should be noted.
