BACKGROUND:  The Latin American region represents a hotspot for oral cancer incidence and mortality. To reduce oral cancer mortality rates, screening for early detection of subjects with suspicious or innocuous oral lesions has been promoted. A systematic review was performed to assess the outcomes of oral cancer screening in the Latin American region. MATERIAL AND METHODS:  An electronic search was conducted in eight databases and grey literature. The eligibility criteria included screening where adult participants underwent any screening test during an organized screening program. Screening programs were assessed to understand trends in oral cancer diagnosis. Rates of oral cancers diagnosed in screening programs were classified as increase, decrease, or stable based on each year assessed. RESULTS:  Following our searches, twelve studies conducted in Brazil and Cuba were included. The screening tests reported were visual oral examination (VOE) and in one study in addition light-based fluorescence testing. 13,277,608 individuals were screened and a total of 1,516 oral cancers were detected (0.01%). Only two studies aimed to screen high-risk individuals (smokers and drinkers). Oral cancer cases diagnosed during screening programs were proportionately stable over the years 1997 to 2009 but increased from 2010 to 2021. The fluorescence-associated VOE test demonstrated a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 90%. Similarly, the VOE test alone exhibited a sensitivity of 100%, with specificity ranging from 75% to 90%. CONCLUSIONS:  Screening studies conducted in Latin American countries had serious limitations both in methodology (lack of examiner training) and in reporting data (lack of description of clinical categories of screen positives). Capacitation of health workers to perform VOE in well-designed screening programs should be implemented.

BACKGROUND: There is no consensus about effective systemic therapy for salivary gland carcinomas (sgcs). Our aim was summarized the clinical trials assessing the systemic therapies (ST) on sgcs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Electronic searches were carried out through MEDLINE/pubmed, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library databases, and gray literature. RESULTS: Seventeen different drugs were evaluated, and the most frequent histological subtype was adenoid cystic carcinoma (n=195, 45.5%). Stable disease, observed in 11 ST, achieved the highest rate in adenoid cystic carcinoma treated with sunitinib. The highest complete (11.1%) and partial response (30.5%) rates were seen in androgen receptor-positive tumors treated with leuprorelin acetate. CONCLUSIONS: Despite all the advances in this field, there is yet no effective evidence-based regimen of ST, with all the clinical trials identified showing low rates of complete and partial responses. Further, translational studies are urgently required to characterize molecular targets and effective ST.

BACKGROUND: Lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) represent a major health problem in the global scenario. In South America, the highest incidence rates are seen in Brazil. Therefore, the epidemiological and clinical profile and survival outcomes of lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCC was studied in São Paulo State, Brazil. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The clinicopathological data of 12,099 patients with lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCC were obtained from hospital cancer registries of the Fundação Oncocentro de São Paulo, Brazil (2010-2015). Survival rates and other analyses were performed using SPSS software. RESULTS: A clear male predominance was observed, particularly for patients with oropharyngeal SCC (88.3%). The average age of patients was higher for lip cases (65 ± 13.5 years) compared to other sites. The schooling level was low for most patients, especially in lip cases (87.9%). Most of the patients with oral cavity (71.8%) and oropharyngeal (86.3%) SCC had advanced-stage (III-IV) disease. However, the majority of lip cases (83.3%) were at an early stage (I-II). Surgical excision was the main treatment for lip (72%) and oral cavity SCC (23.5%), and chemoradiotherapy was the main treatment for oropharyngeal SCC (40.2%). The 5-year overall survival (OS) for patients with lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCC were 66.3, 30.9, and 22.6%, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that the determinants of OS were different for lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCC, except for those at the clinical stage, which was an independent predictor for all sites. CONCLUSIONS: OS-independent determinants varied according to the affected site. Oral cavity and oropharyngeal SCC presented worse survival rates than those for lip SCC.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric head and neck cancer (PHNC) is rare and its nonspecific clinical manifestations may often lead to delayed diagnosis. We aimed to describe the signs, symptoms, and clinicopathological characteristics of PHNC. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Medical records were retrospectively reviewed for all PHNC cases diagnosed from 1986 to 2016 affecting patients aged 19-years and younger from a tertiary referral center in Brazil. Demographic variables, anatomical site of primary tumors, histopathological diagnoses, signs and symptoms, and patterns of misdiagnosis were collected and interpreted by statistical and descriptive analysis. RESULTS: A total of 253 PHNC cases were included. The mean age was 9.3 years and male patients were more frequently affected (60.9%). Burkitt lymphoma (23.7%), nasopharyngeal carcinoma (15.8%), and rhabdomyosarcoma (15.4%) were the most common cancer types. The nasopharynx (28.9%), cervical/lymph node region (25.3%), and craniofacial bones (8.3%) were the predominant anatomical sites. Tumor/swelling (68.4%), was the clinical finding often presented. The univariable analysis showed association between tumor histology and clinical variables such as sex (p=0.022), age (p<0.0001), anatomical location (p<0.0001) tumor/swelling (p=0.034), pain (p=0.031), systemic/general manifestations (p=0.004), nasal/breathing alterations (p=0.012), orbital/ocular alterations (p<0.0001). Misdiagnosis such as tonsillitis, otitis, and abscess were frequent. CONCLUSIONS: Although the clinical findings of PHNC are often unspecific, this study provided signs and symptoms with significant correlations between tumor histology. The suspicion of malignancy should be considered when the main signs and symptoms reported here appear and persist, in order to conduct a timely diagnosis.

Chitosan (CS) is a promising biopolymer and has been tested as a complement to the action and compensation of toxicity presented by anti-tuberculosis drugs. The present work studied the adjuvant effect of CS with the drug ethambutol (EMB) as a compound (CS-EMB), to explore its antimicrobial and cytotoxic activity, using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), to examine ultracellular changes that represent possible antimycobacterial action of CS on Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). Antimycobacterial activities were tested against reference strains Mtb ATCC® H37Rv and multidrug resistant (MDR). In vitro cytotoxicity tests were performed on Raw 264.7. For the studied compounds, morphological, ultrastructural, and physical-chemical analyses were performed. Drug-polymer interactions that occur through the H bridges were confirmed by physical-chemical analyses. The CS-EMB compound is stable at pHs of 6.5-7.5, allowing its release at physiological pH. The antibacterial activity (minimum inhibitory concentration) of the CS-EMB compound was 50% greater than that of the EMB in the H37Rv and MDR strains and the ultrastructural changes in the bacilli observed by TEM proved that the CS-EMB compound has a bactericidal action, allowing it to break down the Mtb cell wall. The cytotoxicity of CS-EMB was higher than that of isolated EMB, IC50 279, and 176 µg/mL, respectively. It is concluded that CS-EMB forms a promising composite against strains Mtb H37Rv and multidrug resistant (MDR-TB).Key points• Our study will be the first to observe ultrastructurally the effects of the CS-EMB compound on Mtb cells.• CS-EMB antimicrobial activity in a multidrug-resistant clinical strain.• The CS-EMB compound has promising potential for the development of a new drug to fight tuberculosis.

Cheeses are able to serve as suitable matrices for supplying probiotics to consumers, enabling appropriate conditions for bacteria to survive gastric transit and reach the gut, where they are assumed to promote beneficial processes. The present study aimed to evaluate the microbiological, immunological, and histological changes in the gut of Salmonella Enteritidis-challenged rats fed goat cheese supplemented with the probiotic strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus EM1107. Thirty male albino Wistar rats were randomly distributed into 5 experimental groups with 6 animals each: negative (NC) and positive (PtC) control groups, control goat cheese (CCh), goat cheese added with L. rhamnosus EM1107 (LrCh), and L. rhamnosus EM1107 only (EM1107). All animals, except NC group were challenged with Salmonella Enteritidis (109 cfu in 1 mL of saline through oral gavage). Microbial composition was assessed with high-throughput 16S rRNA sequencing by means of Illumina MiSeq (Illumina, San Diego, CA). Nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) from the animal cecum tissue was determined by real-time PCR and interleukins (TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-10, and IFN-γ) by means of ELISA. Myeloperoxidase and malondialdehyde levels were determined biochemically. The administration of the L. rhamnosus EM1107 probiotic strain, either as a pure culture or added to a cheese matrix, was able to reduce Salmonella colonization in the intestinal lumen and lessen tissue damage compared with rats from PtC group. In addition, the use of cheese for the probiotic strain delivery (LrCh) was associated with a marked shift in the gut microbiota composition toward the increase of beneficial organisms such as Blautia and Lactobacillus and a reduction in NF-κB expression. These findings support our hypothesis that cheeses might be explored as functional matrices for the efficacious delivery of probiotic strains to consumers.

Different positive pharmacological effects have been attributed to the natural product resveratrol (RSV), including antioxidant, antiaging, and cancer chemopreventive properties. However, its low bioavailability and rapid metabolic degradation has led to the suspicion that many of the biological activities of this compound observed in vitro may not be attainable in humans. To improve its bioavailability and pharmacokinetic profile, attempts have been made to encapsulate RSV into lipid-based nanocarrier systems. Here, the dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB):monoolein (MO) liposomal system (1:2) loaded with RSV revealed appropriate characteristics for drug release purposes: reduced size for cellular uptake (157 ± 23 nm), stability up to 80 days, positive surface charge (ζ ≈ +40 mV), and a controlled biphasic release of RSV from the lipid nanocarriers over a period of almost 50 h at pH 5.0 and 7.4. Moreover, the encapsulation efficiency of the nanocarrier ranged from 70% to 92% and its RSV loading capacity from 9% to 14%, when [RSV] was between 100 and 200 µM. The partition coefficient ( Kp) of RSV between lipid and aqueous phase was log Kp = 3.37 ± 0.10, suggesting moderate to high lipophilicity of this natural compound and reinforcing the lipid nanocarriers' suitability for RSV incorporation. The thermodynamic parameters of RSV partitioning in the lipid nanocarriers at 37 °C (Δ H = 43.76 ± 5.68 kJ mol-1; Δ S = 0.20 ± 0.005 kJ mol-1; and Δ G = -18.46 ± 3.48 kJ mol-1) reflected the spontaneity of the process and the establishment of hydrophobic interactions. The cellular uptake mechanism of the RSV-loaded nanocarriers labeled with the lipophilic fluorescent probe 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH) was studied in the eukaryotic model system Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Thirty minutes after incubation, yeast cells readily internalized nanocarriers and the spots of blue fluorescence of DPH clustered around the central vacuole in lipid droplets colocalized with the green fluorescence of the lipophilic endocytosis probe FM1-43. Subsequent studies with the endocytosis defective yeast deletion mutant ( end3Δ) and with the endocytosis inhibitor methyl-ß-cyclodextrin supported the involvement of an endocytic pathway. This novel nanotechnology approach opens good perspectives for medical applications.

Vertical transmission to progeny ensures the maintenance of arboviruses in their natural vectors. This mechanism is largely reported for dengue virus (DENV) and yellow fever virus (YFV). Few studies have addressed this mechanism for Zika virus (ZIKV), Mayaro virus (MAYV) and other arboviruses. The present study investigated the natural infection rate by arboviruses in 4490 Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti and 296 Aedes (Stegomyia) albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) reared from eggs collected with ovitraps in Cuiabá, Mato Grosso State, from February to July, 2017. After viral RNA extraction and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction protocols for 10 flaviviruses and five alphaviruses, nucleotide sequencing and three passages in C6/36 cells, eight pools of Ae. aegypti positive for DENV-4 genotype II, seven for ZIKV Asian genotype and two for MAYV genotype L were found. In addition, two Ae. albopictus pools were positive for DENV-4 genotype II and two were positive for ZIKV Asian genotype. Infection was confirmed by viral isolation in all positive pools for DENV-4 and for MAYV and in eight of nine for ZIKV. This mechanism may contribute to the spread of arboviruses during epidemics and also to their maintenance in natural vectors during interepidemic periods.

PROPOSE: To study CCDC103 expression profiles and understand how pathogenic variants in CCDC103 affect its expression profile at mRNA and protein level. METHODS: To increase the knowledge about the CCDC103, we attempted genotype-phenotype correlations in two patients carrying novel homozygous (missense and frameshift) CCDC103 variants. Whole-exome sequencing, quantitative PCR, Western blot, electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry, immunocytochemistry, and immunogold labelling were performed to characterize CCDC103 expression profiles in reproductive and somatic cells. RESULTS: Our data demonstrate that pathogenic variants in CCDC103 gene negatively affect gene and protein expression in both patients who presented absence of DA on their axonemes. Further, we firstly report that CCDC103 is expressed at different levels in reproductive tissues and somatic cells and described that CCDC103 protein forms oligomers with tissue-specific sizes, which suggests that CCDC103 possibly undergoes post-translational modifications. Moreover, we reported that CCDC103 was restricted to the midpiece of sperm and is present at the cytoplasm of the other cells. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, our data support the CCDC103 involvement in PCD and suggest that CCDC103 may have different assemblies and roles in cilia and sperm flagella biology that are still unexplored.

BACKGROUND: Nerve injury often results in persistent or chronic neuropathic pain characterized by spontaneous burning pain accompanied by allodynia and hyperalgesia. Low level laser therapy (LLLT) is a noninvasive method that has proved to be clinically effective in reducing pain sensitivity and consequently in improving the quality of life. Here we examined the effects of LLLT on pain sensitivity induced by chronic constriction injury (CCI) in rats. CCI was performed on adult male rats, subjected thereafter to 10 sessions of LLLT, every other day, and starting 14 days after CCI. Over the treatment period, the animals were evaluated for nociception using behavioral tests, such as allodynia, thermal and mechanical hyperalgesia. Following the sessions, we observed the involvement of satellite glial cells in the dorsal root ganglion (DRG) using immunoblotting and immunofluorescence approaches. In addition we analyzed the expression levels of interleukin 1 (IL-1ß) and fractalkine (FKN) after the same stimulus. RESULTS: LLLT induced an early reduction (starting at the second session; p ≤ 0.001) of the mechanical and thermal hyperalgesia and allodynia in CCI rats, which persisted until the last session. Regarding cellular changes, we observed a decrease of GFAP (50%; p ≤ 0.001) expression after LLLT in the ipsilateral DRG when compared with the naive group. We also observed a significant increase of pro-inflammatory cytokines after CCI, whereas LLLT dramatically inhibited the overexpression of these proteins. CONCLUSIONS: These data provide evidence that LLLT reverses CCI-induced behavioral hypersensitivity, reduces glial cell activation in the DRG and decreases pro-inflammatory cytokines; we suggest that this involvement of glial cells can be one potential mechanism in such an effect.

Chronic constriction injury (CCI) simulates the symptoms of chronic nerve compression, which is characterized by allodynia and hyperalgesia. Nerve growth factor (NGF) is released after nerve injury by immune and Schwann cells and transported in retrograde fashion to the dorsal root ganglion (DRG), resulting in increased synthesis of Substance P (SP) and the triggering of neuropathic pain. Here we performed long-term evaluation of allodynia and hyperalgesia in a CCI model, and evaluated the effects of NGF and SP on the peripheral and central nervous systems. Most previous studies have shown deficits and molecular changes 14 days after surgery, however, the long-term effects have not been evaluated. We performed Randall-Selitto, Von Frey, Hargreaves and acetone tests for the entire 56 days post-surgery. Several of these deficits increased 14 to 56 days after CCI and we measured a constant increase in NGF levels in the DRG and spinal cord over the course of the experiment. In contrast, SP optical density maintained enhanced expression in DRG tissue from 14 to 56 days after CCI, whereas it was significantly increased only 56 days post-surgery in spinal cord. We perform long-term evaluation of symptoms associated with CCI and measure associated molecular changes. Moreover, by characterizing the behavioral signatures of this model, our work supports future studies.

Casearia grandiflora (Salicaceae) is a typical Cerrado species adapted to disturbed environments, making it useful for restoration projects. Knowledge of genetic diversity is important for establishing conservation strategies for this species. This study aimed to compare chloroplast haplotype diversity and structure of C. grandiflora, under the assumption that protected areas hold greater genetic diversity than disturbed areas. The populations studied are from Parque Nacional de Sete Cidades Conservation Unit and from the surroundings of the city of Cocal de Telha, both located in the State of Piauí. Molecular analyses were performed with seven chloroplast microsatellite loci. The number of private haplotypes and haplotype diversity were higher in the conservation unit, which reinforces the importance of these areas in maintaining biodiversity. Analysis of molecular variance showed that most of the genetic variation is found within populations, with a moderate divergence between them (FST = 0.14). The Bayesian analysis and discriminant analysis of principal components suggested that populations are not structured, revealing that a set of individuals from Parque Nacional de Sete Cidades were more divergent within populations than between them. Since literature has little information on C. grandiflora, the results of this study provide important contribution to a better understanding of the specie's genetic diversity.

In the present paper, the method of simultaneous moiré-like fringe pattern projection for Fourier transform profilometry is described. The photorefractive holographic interferometric process produces controlled moiré-like patterns with two or more different variation directions. Each low spatial frequency fringe pattern is experimentally obtained as a result of the superposition of two high spatial frequency sinusoidal gratings, with slightly different pitches, for each fringe variation direction. These dynamic moiré-like patterns are induced due to an optical holographic beating of the sinusoidal induced gratings in the volume of the photorefractive Bi12TiO20 (BTO) crystal sample used as dynamic holographic medium. Two or more moiré-like fringe patterns, with at least two different variation directions, simultaneously (or not), are projected onto the object surface. Thus, this is the 2D fringe projection stage of our proposed Fourier transform procedure to determine the profile of a simple object.

Dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB):Monoolein (MO) lipoplexes have mainly been studied within the range of high molar ratios of DODAB, with noticeable transfection efficiencies in the Human Embryonic Kidney (HEK, a.k.a. 293T) cell line. In this work, we intend to study the effect of high MO content on the structure and physicochemical properties of pDNA/DODAB:MO lipoplexes to achieve some correlation with their transfection efficiency. Static/Dynamic Light Scattering and Cryo-TEM imaging were used to characterize the size/morphology of DNA/DODAB:MO lipoplexes at different DODAB:MO contents (2:1, 1:1, 1:2) and charge ratios (CRs) (+/-). Nile Red fluorescence emission was performed to detect changes in microviscosity, hydration and polarity of DNA/DODAB:MO systems. Lipoplexes stability at physiological pH values and in the presence of anionic lipids was evaluated by Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET). Physicochemical/structural data were complemented with transfection studies in HEK cells using the ß-galactosidase reporter gene activity assay. This work reports the coexistence of multilamellar and non-lamellar inverted phases in MO-richer lipoplexes (DODAB:MO 1:2 and 1:4), leading to transfection efficiencies comparable to those of multilamellar (DODAB-richer) lipoplexes, but at higher charge ratios [CR (+/-)=6.0] and without dose-effect response. These results may be related to the structural changes of lipoplexes promoted by high MO content.

In this Letter, a proposal addressing the problem of two-dimensional phase unwrapping based on the theory of residues is presented. Here, wrapped phase maps with shifted phase jumps are used to balance residue charges. With this approach, we seek to minimize processing time and residue connection, which is essential in the development of branch-cut algorithms. Finally, a phase-unwrapping algorithm is applied to these wrapped maps, generated by Fourier transform profilometry to obtain three-dimensional profiles of objects illuminated by photorefractive moiré-like patterns generated in an experiment of real-time dynamic holography, and by fringe patterns generated with a Michelson interferometer.

In this Letter, low-frequency photorefractive holographic moiré fringe patterns are proposed as secure numerical code generators that could be useful for storage or data transmission. These dynamic moiré patterns are holographically obtained by the superposition of two or more sinusoidal gratings with slightly different pitches. The Bi(12)TiO(20) photorefractive crystal sample is used as holographic medium. An optical numerical base was defined with patterns representing the 0, 1 and -1 digits as bits. Then, the complete set of these optical bits is combined to form bytes, where a numerical sequence is represented. The results show that the proposed numerical code is simple, robust and extremely secure, then could be used efficiently as standard numerical identification in robotic vision or eventually in storage or transmission of secure numerical data.

BACKGROUND: Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is an autoimmune skin blistering disease. The main targets of autoantibodies are the desmosomal proteins desmoglein (Dsg)3 and Dsg1. Anti-E-cadherin antibody is the second most frequent antibody found in pemphigus foliaceus (fogo selvagem), but the frequency in PV is unknown. OBJECTIVES: To determine the anti-E-cadherin antibody profile in the two major subtypes of PV: mucosal PV (mPV) and mucocutaneous PV (mcPV). METHODS: Sera from 80 patients with PV and 80 controls were tested. Patients with PV were subdivided into mPV (n = 18) and mcPV (n = 62). Samples were tested by E-cadherin, Dsg1 and Dsg3 enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs), and immunoprecipitation coupled with Western blotting (IP-WB). RESULTS: Both mPV and mcPV sera have antibodies against E-cadherin as demonstrated by ELISA and IP-WB. Both subtypes of PV have low levels of anti-E-cadherin antibodies, but significantly higher levels than healthy controls by ELISA (P < 0·0001). No difference exists in antibody levels between subgroups (P = 0·82). By IP-WB, 78% of mcPV sera reacted to E-cadherin, vs. 33% of mPV sera tested. Correlation analysis suggests a moderate correlation between anti-E-cadherin antibodies and Dsg1 antibodies (average r = 0·61), but no correlation with Dsg3 antibodies (average r = 0·19). Patients with mPV can have lower levels of Dsg1 antibodies compared with controls by ELISA (P < 0·0001). A few mPV sera also reacted to Dsg1 protein by IP-WB (17%). CONCLUSIONS: Anti-E-cadherin antibodies are present in both major subtypes of PV. A moderate correlation exists between E-cadherin and Dsg1 antibodies. Patients with mPV can have low levels of both E-cadherin and Dsg1 antibodies.

Neurodegenerative diseases (ND) are characterized, especially, by the progressive loss of neurons, resulting in neuropsychomotor dysfunctions. Even with a high prevalence, NDs are treated with drugs that alleviate the symptoms of patients, but which develop adverse events and still do not inhibit the progression of the disease. Thus, within a new pharmacological perspective, this review aimed to verify the therapeutic potential of natural compounds of marine origin against ND. For this, an integrative review was carried out, according to the PRISMA methodology, which included steps such as: search, pre-selection and inclusion of articles. The results described revealed species such as Acaudina malpodioides, Holothuria scabra and Xylaria sp., which presented important evidence in relation to Alzheimer's, reducing the generation of ROS, presenting neuroprotective effects and reducing the concentration of Aß peptide. Regarding Parkinson's disease (PD), another example of ND, the bioactive compounds from Holothuria scabra and Xylaria sp., showed to be able to reduce the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons, reduce the deposition of alpha synuclein and reduce the formation of Mutant Huntingtin protein (Mhtt). The other marine compounds and bioactive substances are also described in this review. In conclusion, the evaluated studies indicate that compounds of marine origin emerge as a promising source of bioactive compounds, revealing an important therapeutic potential for the treatment of ND.

Artificial insemination (AI) and in vivo embryo production (or multiple ovulation and embryo transfer, MOET) programs are both instrumental in accelerating the propagation of genetically and economically superior goats and sheep. The aim of this review was to present the current gestalt of non-surgical AI and embryo recovery (NSER) procedures in small ruminants. Small body size, precluding rectal palpation, and highly limited penetrability of the uterine cervix in ewes are the major reasons for the scarce use of non-surgical assisted reproduction techniques in this species. As a result, AI and embryo recovery techniques in sheep mainly involve laparoscopy or laparotomy (LAP). In does, however, the Embrapa method of AI allows for successful intrauterine deposition of semen, resulting in pregnancy rates from 50 to 80% under field conditions (>3 000 goats inseminated) when frozen-thawed semen is used. After the administration of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α), non-surgical (transcervical) embryo recovery is also feasible in goats, with the cervical penetration rate approaching 100%. There is a paucity of information on the efficacy of non-surgical AI using frozen semen in sheep, but the results are satisfactory with fresh, cooled, or chilled ram semen. An application of the NSER technique in ewes has greatly improved over the last decade, and cervical penetration rates of ∼90% can be achieved when a hormonal cervical dilation protocol using PGF2α, oxytocin, and/or estradiol ester (e.g., estradiol benzoate) is applied. In some genotypes of sheep, sufficient cervical dilation can be induced without estradiol ester included in the protocol. Several studies indicated that recovery of transferable quality ovine embryos using NSER is comparable to that employing a ventral midline laparotomy, and NSER is evidently a method of choice when animal welfare is concerned. Considering both the number of retrievable embryos and animal well-being, the NSER is a viable alternative for surgical procedures. With further developments, it has the makings of a primary, if not exclusive, embryo recovery technique in small ruminants worldwide.
