OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the quantitative values of linear and angular facial anthropometrics in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) and compare them with those of patients with bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP) using three-dimensional (3D) facial imaging. DESIGN: Retrospective, observational, and cross-sectional study. SETTING: Hospital for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies/USP (HRAC/USP). PATIENTS/ PARTICIPANTS: In total, 61 non-syndromic patients with CLP who underwent multidisciplinary treatment and rehabilitated with a prosthesis were enrolled and divided into those with UCLP (G1; n = 31) and those with BCLP (G2; n = 30). INTERVENTION: Facial images were captured using a 3D camera after landmarks were marked on each patient's face. The software evaluated linear and angular parameters. Statistical tests were applied. Significance was determined as P < 0.05. MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS: Overall, 22 linear and 13 angular measurements were evaluated. RESULTS: The nasal length (P = 0.08), middle third of the face (P = 0.06), base nose width (P < 0.001), nasal root width (P < 0.001), nasal tip angle (P = 0.018), philtrum width (P < 0.001), lower face width (P = 0.039) and midfacial depth (P = 0.040) were significantly higher in G2; the upper cutaneous lip height was significantly higher in G1. Sexual dimorphism was observed except for linear measurements (linear distance between the labiale superius and labiale inferius landmarks, nasal root width, and upper cutaneous lip length) and angular measurements. CONCLUSIONS: G2 had a greater length and width of nose and nasal root, nasal tip angle, philtrum width, and lower face width, midfacial depth, and midface third than G1. These findings also revealed the presence of sexual dimorphism.

The assessment of rehabilitation outcomes requires a patient documentation protocol, including records obtained at standardized ages, to compare different types of surgeries, their effects, as well as between different rehabilitation centers. The aim of this paper was to present proper trays for babies with different types of cleft lip and palate, which are used in the outpatient routine at Hospital of Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies/USP (HRAC/USP). The customized trays are made with self-curing acrylic resin. The tray must have suitable depth to copy the buccal sulcus, and wax is usually applied to contour the tray edge, and the adjustment of the tray to the fornix, making the tray specific for each child. The impression precludes the utilization of dental casts for diagnosis, treatment plan, and research measurements. In the clinical practice at HRAC-USP, it was observed that customized trays increased the quality of impression, accurately reproducing anatomical features of dental arches of babies with oral clefts.

To evaluate and compare the dental arch symmetry of individuals with and without cleft lip and palate after orthodontic/rehabilitation treatment.Cross-sectional study.Tertiary cleft center in Brazil.Fifty-five participants aged between 18 and 30 years were divided into 3 groups according to treatment. Patients that received either a fixed partial denture (FPD) or implant-supported crown (ISC) in the cleft area or only orthodontic treatment, noncleft patients (NC).An analysis was performed using digitized dental casts scanned by laser and software. The following linear measurements were evaluated: incisor-canine; canine-molar; incisor-molar; surface and volume of the palatal region.Three-way ANOVA was used to compare the study factors: group (FPD/ISC/NC) and side (right/left) followed by the Tukey test to verify their interaction (α = .05).The results showed statistically significant differences among groups for the maxillary linear measurements canine-molar and incisor-molar, but not for incisor-canine. No statistically significant differences were found regarding the side for the maxillary measurements, while the factor interaction showed similarity only for incisor-canine. The mandibular measurements showed no statistical differences among groups, sides, or factor interactions. In surface and volume, all values in patients with cleft presented lesser than in without cleft patients.Regardless of the rehabilitation, arch symmetry can be achieved in the incisor-canine dimension in the cleft area.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this ecological study was to analyze the relationship of social restriction measures and people's interest in searching toothache-related information on the Internet. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The following indicators Stringency Index (SI), Years Lived with Disability (YLDs) for untreated caries in permanent teeth, Google market share, Internet penetration, and relative search volume (RSV) for the Topic "Toothache" in Google Trends were determined for 21 countries with available data, from April 2018 to May 2020. Statistical analysis was performed using Mann-Whitney U test, t-Student test, Pearson's Chi-square test, and Spearman and Pearson's cross-correlation tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Relative search volume values increased significantly after restriction measures in all countries, except for Japan. Higher RSV values were found among 11 countries that presented a cross-correlation between RSV and SI with r≥│0.6│. The most common queries were linked to the treatment and self-resolution of toothache, with a sudden increase of searches that combined the symptom with COVID-19. CONCLUSIONS: The interests in toothache-related digital information were associated with social restriction measures. These results allow the identification of dental demands of distinct populations, contributing to the planning of specific public health policies during and after the pandemic period.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare dimensional alterations of dental arches in children with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate before and after different techniques of primary plastic surgeries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample was divided into two groups: group 1-cheiloplasty by Millard's technique and one-stage palatoplasty by von Langenbeck's technique; group 2-cheiloplasty by Millard's technique and two-stage palatoplasty: anterior palatoplasty by Hans Pichler's technique and posterior palatoplasty by Sommerlad's technique. Dental arches were evaluated before (T1), after the first phase (T2), and 1 year after the second phase (T3) of primary surgeries. Linear measurements and palatal area were assessed. To analyze the method's error, interclass correlation coefficient was applied. ANOVA (followed by Tukey test), dependent, and independent t-test were used (p < 0.05). RESULTS: At T1, the intertuberosity distance was statistically greater in G2 (p = 0.004). At T2, the anterior length of the dental arch was statistically greater in G2 (p = 0.025), while the area of the smaller palatal segment (p = 0.001), cleft area (p = 0.014), and total area (p = 0.002) were statistically smaller in G2. At T3, the intertuberosity distance was statistically greater in G2 (p = 0.017). CONCLUSION: This study suggests that cheiloplasty and one-stage palatoplasty resulted in smaller growth of maxilla than cheiloplasty and two-stage palatoplasty in the linear measurements (T-T' and I-CC') and total area of the dental arches. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Surgical protocols need to be evaluated to verify their effects aiming at improving the clinical practice of the interdisciplinary team, determining new parameters for the rehabilitation of individuals with cleft lip and palate.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to evaluate longitudinally the volume of the dental arches in children with unilateral cleft lip and palate before and after the rehabilitative plastic surgeries. This is a longitudinal retrospective study was composed by 102 digitized dental casts of children with unilateral complete cleft lip (G1) and cleft lip and palate (G2). The palate volume was evaluated at 3 periods: preoperative (T1), postoperative 1 (T2), and postoperative 2 (T3). The intra- and inter-examiner reliability was analyzed by Wilcoxon test/Dahlberg formula and interclass correlation coefficient, respectively. The intragroup comparison was analyzed by Wilcoxon test and Friedman test followed by post-hoc Dunn test. Mann-Whitney test was applied for the intergroup comparison (α = 5%). G1 had a significant growth at T2 (P = 0.031). G2 demonstrated a positive development at T2, but decreased at T3 (P = 0.003). The intergroup analysis revealed that G2 showed a greater volume at T1 and T2 (P < 0.0001 and P = 0.0024, respectively). T2-T1 exhibited no statistically significant difference (P = 0.262). In conclusion, there was a volumetric increase in the dental arches after cheiloplasty followed by a reduction after palatoplasty. Further investigations are necessary to validate the preliminary results of the present study.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Facial collapse is associated with edentulism, and while the provision of complete dentures promotes masticatory function and esthetics, whether complete dentures restore facial proportions to the natural appearance found in dental individuals is unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical study was to assess the facial profiles of edentulous individuals before and after treatment with complete dentures and compare these profiles with those of dentate individuals matched by age as the control. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty White participants were recruited as 2 groups: 30 edentulous participants provided with complete dentures in both arches and 30 participants with natural teeth and normal occlusion. Facial analysis was performed through 3D stereophotogrammetry. Linear, angular, surface, and perimeter facial measurements were made and statistically analyzed with paired and independent t tests (α=.05). RESULTS: The mean age ±standard deviation was 63.16 ±7.33 years for the edentulous participants and 60.43 ±5.34 years for the dentate controls, without statistical differences between ages (P=.105). The facial profiles of the edentulous group with and without complete dentures were statistically different (P<.05) in 6 linear and 5 angular measurements. After quantifying the facial collapse by comparing edentulous individuals without complete dentures and the control dentate group, the results showed that the majority of differences occurred in the middle and lower third of the face, evidencing shortening in these areas with differences in facial measures of around 2 to 5 mm less in the edentulous group. However, statistically significant differences between the participants with complete dentures and the control dentate group were found in only 2 linear measurements (the distance between the right and the left exocanthion to cheilion), in the sealed lip angle and the left gonial angle, and in the surface and perimeter (P<.05). CONCLUSIONS: Tooth loss affected the facial proportions in the lower third of the face. The provision of complete dentures restored their facial appearance but not precisely to the facial proportions of individuals with a natural dentition, as considerable differences were detected in surface and perimeter measurements.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Reports on the impact of fixed partial denture treatments on the quality of life of patients with cleft lip and palate are lacking. PURPOSE: The purpose of this cross-sectional clinical study was to assess the impact of fixed partial dentures on the quality of life of adults with cleft lip and palate. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 52 participants (23 women and 29 men) with cleft lip and palate, aged between 20 and 50 years old, and who required treatment with fixed partial dentures were enrolled in the study. They responded to the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP)-14 questionnaire before and 30 days after the fixed prosthodontic treatment. The final value from the OHIP-14 was generated by totaling the 14 answers, giving a range from 0 to 56, with higher values indicating a worse relationship between oral health and the quality of life. Nonparametric statistical analysis was performed with the Wilcoxon test (α=.05). RESULTS: Forty-six participants reported some negative experience before the fixed partial denture, and 48 indicated an improved quality of life 30 days after delivery. All domains assessed showed significant quality of life improvements between the periods compared (P≤.014). CONCLUSIONS: Oral treatment with fixed partial dentures improved the quality of life in adults with cleft lip and palate.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different photobiomodulation (PBM) radiant exposures on the viability, proliferation, and gene expression of pulp fibroblasts from human primary teeth (HPF) involved in the pulp tissue repair. HPF were irradiated with Laser InGaAlP (Twin Flex Evolution, MMOptics®) at 660-nm wavelength (red); single time, continuous mode, 0.04-cm2 laser tip area, and 0.225-cm laser tip diameter, keeping the distance of 1 mm between the laser beam and the cell culture. The doses used were between 1.2 and 6.2 J/cm2 and were evaluated at the 6 h, 12 h, and 24 h after PBM. MTT and crystal violet assays evaluated the cell viability and proliferation. RT-PCR verified VEGF and FGF-2 mRNA expression. A blinded examiner analyzed the data through two-way ANOVA followed by Tukey test (p < 0.05). The groups with higher powers (10 mW, 15 mW, 20 mW, and 25 mW), shortest application periods (10 s), and radiant exposures between 2.5 and 6.2 J/cm2 exhibited statistically higher viability than that of the groups with small power (5 mW), longer application period (50 s), and radiant exposure of 6.2 J/cm2 (p < 0.05). VEGF and FGF-2 mRNA expression were observed at the three evaluated periods (6 h, 12 h, and 24 h) and the highest expression was in the shortest period (p < 0.05). All radiant exposures maintained HPF viable. The period of 6 h after irradiation showed statistically greater gene expression for both growth factors than other periods. VEGF mRNA had no differences among the dosimetries studied. The best radiant exposures for FGF-2 gene expression were 2.5 J/cm2 and 3.7 J/cm2.

ABSTRACT: Arch asymmetry in cleft patients is a current problem that interdisciplinary treatment aims to solve. This research proposed to analyze the final rehabilitation, according to the arch symmetry of these patients. Thirty-five patients aged between 18 and 30 years, rehabilitated with a fixed partial denture or implants in the cleft area. The analysis was performed using digitalized dental casts with a laser model scanner (R700TM; 3Shape A/S, Holmens Kanal 7, 1060, Copenhagen/Denmark), analyzed with a Vectra Analysis Module software program (VECTRA H1; Canfield Scientific, 4 Wood Hollow Road, Parsippany, NJ 07054). Three linear measurements were evaluated, incisal-canine, canine-molar, and incisal-molar distance. The Student t test was applied to test the significance (P = 0.05) of an observed sample by correlation coefficient test (r-value). Female patients showed a significant correlation in arch symmetry. According to the rehabilitation treatment, patients who received implants showed a high correlation and significant symmetry at all maxillary distances. Finally, according to the cleft side in the maxillary dimensions, even though the majority of patients had clefts on the left side, only patients with a cleft on the right side showed symmetry in this area. Patients rehabilitated with implants in the cleft area showed a more symmetrical maxillary arch than those restored with fixed partial dentures.

BACKGROUND: Cohort studies have evaluated dental arches of children. AIM: To evaluate the volumetric, linear, palatal surface area, and the dental arch superimposition of participants with bilateral complete cleft lip (BCL) and bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP) surgically treated in a specialized hospital. DESIGN: One hundred and thirty six digitized dental models evaluated before cheiloplasty (T1), after cheiloplasty (T2), and after palatoplasty (T3). The stereophotogrammetry software analysed the volume, palate superimposition, linear, and area measurements. RESULTS: In BCL group, at T2, C-C', T-T', area, and volume significantly increased (P = .000, P < .000, P = .010 e P = .003, respectively). In BCLP group, the comparison T3 × T1 showed that C-C' decreased, whereas T-T' and the area increased (P < .000, P < .000, P = .000). The volume increased at T2, but decreased at T3 (P < .000) in participants with BCLP. The intergroup analysis revealed that C-C', T-T', I-C', and I-C were significantly smaller in participants with BCLP (P < .000, P = .016, P = .001 e P = .020, respectively), whereas the volume, superimposition, and area were statistically similar between groups (P > .05). CONCLUSION: The comparison between bilateral orofacial clefts showed reduction in the transversal and anteroposterior linear measurements, but not in the area and volume, which was confirmed by the superimposition of the dental arches.

A biobank is an organized collection of biological human material and its associated information stored for research according to regulations under institutional responsibility, without commercial purposes, being a mandatory and strategical activity for research, regenerative medicine, and innovation. Stem cells have largely been employed in research and frequently stored in biobanks, which have been used as an essential source of biological materials. Stem cells of human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED) are stem cells which have a high multipotency and can be easily obtained. Besides, this extremely accessible tissue has advantages with respect to storage, as the SHED obtained in childhood can be used in later life, which implies the necessity for the creation and regulation of biobanks. The proper planning for the creation of a biobank includes knowledge of the material types to be stored, requirements regarding handling and storage conditions, storage time, and room for the number of samples. Thus, this study aimed to establish an overview of the development of a SHED biobank. Ethical and legal standardization, current applications, specific orientations, and challenges for the implementation of a SHED biobank were discussed. Through this overview, we hope to encourage further studies to use SHED biobanks.

This study evaluated the viability, proliferation, and protein expression after photobiomodulation (PBM) of stem cell from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED). The groups were the following: G1 (2.5 J/cm2), G2 (3.7 J/cm2), and control (not irradiated). According to the groups, cells were irradiated with InGaAlP diode laser at 660 nm wavelength, continuous mode, and single time application. After 6 h, 12 h, and 24 h from irradiation, the cell viability and proliferation, and the protein expression were analyzed by MTT, crystal violet, and ELISA multiplex assay, respectively. Twenty-four hours after PBM, SHED showed better proliferation. Over time in the supernatant, all groups had an increase at the levels of VEGF-C, VEGF-A, and PLGF. In the lysate, the control and G2 exhibited a decrease of the VEGF-A, PECAM-1, and PLGF expression, while control and G3 decreased VEGF-C, VEGF-A, and PDGF expression. The dosimetries of 2.5 J/cm2 and 3.7 J/cm2 maintained viability, improved proliferation, and synthesis of the angiogenic proteins in the supernatant in the studied periods on SHED.

OBJECTIVE: To verify the photobiomodulation effect on angiogenic proteins produced and released by dental human pulpal fibroblasts (HPFs). MATERIAL AND METHODS: HPFs were irradiated with 660-nm low-level laser at fluences of 2.5 J/cm2 and 3.7 J/cm2. The control group was not irradiated. MTT, crystal violet, and ELISA assays respectively verified viability, proliferation, and angiogenic protein (supernatant/lysate) at 6 h, 12 h, and 24 h after photobiomodulation. Capillary-like structure formation assay verified functional role. Two-way ANOVA/Tukey's test and ANOVA/Bonferroni's multiple comparisons test respectively verified cell viability/proliferation and intragroup and intergroup comparisons of protein synthesis (p < 0.05). RESULTS: Irradiated and non-irradiated HPFs showed statistically similar cell viability and proliferation pattern. Intragroup comparisons showed similar patterns of protein synthesis for all groups: VEGF-A, VEGF-C, and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 1 (VEGFR1) increased significantly in the supernatant, while FGF-2 and VEGF-A increased significantly in the lysate. The lower fluence significantly increased BMP-9 (6 h) in the supernatant and VEGFR1 (6 h and 12 h) and VEGF-D (24 h) in the lysate, while the higher fluence significantly increased BMP-9 (6 h) in the supernatant and VEGFR1 (12 h) in the lysate. Regardless of the time, both fluences statistically downregulated placental growth factor (PLGF) and PDGF secretion. Both fluences statistically decreased VEGF-A secretion (24 h) and PLGF production (6 h). CONCLUSION: Photobiomodulation produced stimulatory effects on angiogenic protein secretion by pulp fibroblasts. In terms of photobiomodulation, over time, both fluences significantly increased the secretion of VEGF-A, VEGF-C, and VEGFR1 and significantly upregulated BMP-9 (6 h) in the supernatant; for capillary-like structure formation, the fluence of 2.5 J/cm2 was better than the fluence of 3.7 J/cm2. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This study results addressed effective photobiomodulation parameters tailored for pulp angiogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a developmental enamel defect characterized by well-demarcated discolorations frequently detected in molars, causing pain and esthetic alterations. AIM: To assess the interests of Google users on MIH-related information. DESIGN: Digital data were collected in Google Trends through two search strategies, 'molar incisor hypomineralization' (topic) and 'MIH' (search term), between January 2004 and November 2018. ARIMA models were applied to analyze trends of curves and to predict the activity of Google users during 12 months. Autocorrelation and partial autocorrelation (ACF/PACF) plots were used to detect trends in the variation of relative search volume (RSV) related to search strategies over time. The most popular queries were analyzed qualitatively, whereas geographical heat maps were retrieved to determine search volumes according to countries (P < .05). RESULTS: Gradual increasing trends were detected, with forecasts indicating similar levels of RSVs to the period between December 2017 and November 2018. Treatment for a patient with a dental anomaly pattern is challenging and complex. This article presents a rare case with an association of multiple ectopic eruptions treated in 2 phases. An 8-year-old boy in the early mixed dentition showed a Class II, Division 2 malocclusion, and an ectopic eruption of the mandibular right lateral incisor. The treatment plan included extractions of the deciduous mandibular right lateral incisor and canine, followed by partial mandibular fixed appliances and a lingual arch. In the late mixed dentition, the panoramic radiograph showed bilateral ectopic eruptions of the maxillary canines. The deciduous maxillary canines were extracted, and a cervical headgear was installed. Within 12 months, both permanent maxillary canines spontaneously erupted. Comprehensive orthodontic treatment was initiated when the patient was aged 13 years to level the curve of Spee and reduce the overbite. Phase 2 lasted 15 months. In patients with dental anomaly patterns, longitudinal follow-up during the mixed dentition is highly important and might contribute to simplifying comprehensive orthodontic treatment and reducing complications and adverse effects.

The present study aimed to evaluate in vitro whether the low-level laser (LLL) delivering fractionated total energy (multiple irradiation) or single irradiation stimulates regeneration-associated events (viability and proliferation) in stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED). Cells received LLL irradiation (InGaAlP-660 nm), according to the following experimental groups: G1 (single irradiation 2.5 J/cm2, 10 mW, 10 s, 0.10 J), G2 (single irradiation 5.0 J/cm2, 10 mW, 20 s, 0.20 J), G3 (single irradiation 7.5 J/cm2, 10 mW, 30 s, 0.30 J), G4 (two irradiations 2.5 J/cm2, 10 mW, 10 s; total energy 0.20 J), G5 (three irradiations 2.5 J/cm2, 10 mW, 10 s; total energy 0.30 J), and G6 (non-irradiated). Cell viability was assessed by MTT and trypan blue exclusion (TBE) methods, while cell proliferation was evaluated by crystal violet (CV) and sulforhodamine B (SRB) assays after 24, 48, and 72 h after the first irradiation. By MTT, there was no difference between groups at 24 and 72 h. At 48 h, the groups subjected to multiple irradiation (G4 and G5) presented higher cell viability rates. The average percentages of viable cells for all groups by TBE method were 91.04%, 96.63%, and 97.48% at 24, 48, and 72 h, respectively. By CV, there was no significant difference between groups at 24 and 48 h; at 72 h, G2, G3, and G4 presented higher cell proliferation. By SRB, G1 and G4 presented lower proliferation rates in all the periods. When the groups presenting the same total energy were compared, G2 (0.20 J) presented lower cell viability rates and higher cell proliferation rates in comparison with G4; G3 (0.30 J) presented similar results to those of G5, with higher cell viability and proliferation. The application of laser delivering fractionated total energy (two or three applications of 2.5 J/cm2) induced higher cell viability at 48 h, while the single irradiation with 2.5 J/cm2 did not stimulate metabolic activity in such period and the proliferation over time. The 5.0 and 7.5 J/cm2 single doses and the three applications of 2.5 J/cm2 maintained cell viability and stimulated proliferation of SHED at 72 h.

The aim of this preliminary study was to compare the effects of different energy densities from red and infrared low-level laser (LLL) on viability and proliferation of stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED). SHED were irradiated with red laser (R) or infrared laser (IR) set with the following dosimetry: 1.2 J/cm2 (0.05 J), 2.5 J/cm2 (0.1 J), 5.0 J/cm2 (0.2 J), and 7.5 J/cm2 (0.3 J). Positive (C+) and negative (C-) control groups comprised non-irradiated cells. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's test (P < 0.05). At 24- and 48-h period, group R5.0 showed significantly higher cell viability rates than R1.2 and R2.5. At 48 h, R2.5 also revealed lower proliferation than R5.0. Comparing to the C+ group, R2.5 exhibited lower viability at 72 h, and proliferation at 24 and 48 h. Groups R1.2, IR1.2, and IR5.0 were less viable at 24 h, while R1.2, IR2.5, and IR5.0 revealed lower proliferative capacity at 48 h. Overall, our results showed that LLL can favor viability and proliferation of SHED, especially when cells receive red laser irradiation at 5.0 J/cm2. Therefore, according to this preliminary investigation, 5 J/cm2 applied by red LLL induced high rates of cell viability and proliferation, while the same irradiation dose using infrared laser led to negative effects. LLL irradiation with 1.2 and 2.5 J/cm2 was deleterious to metabolic activity and proliferation of SHED regardless of the type of laser. Further studies are necessary to gain in-depth knowledge about the effects of different wavelengths of LLL on SHED viability and proliferation.

This study aimed to analyze the effects of laser irradiation on the membrane integrity and viability of stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED) that were kept in serum starvation. Nutritional deficit was used to mimic the cellular stress conditions of SHED isolation for regenerative dental approaches, where laser therapy could be beneficial. SHED were cultured under serum starvation (MEMα + 1%FBS) for 1 or 24 h pre-irradiation (protocols A and B, respectively). Then, cells received low-level laser therapy (LLLT; 660 nm) at 2.5 J/cm2 (0.10 W; groups I and V), 5.0 J/cm2 (0.20 W; groups II and VI), 7.5 J/cm2 (0.30 W; groups III and VII), or remained non-irradiated (groups IV and VIII). During irradiation, cells were maintained in 1% FBS (groups I-IV) or 10% FBS (normal culture conditions; groups V-VIII). Membrane integrity was evaluated by quantifying lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release (immediately after irradiation), and cell viability was assessed by the MTT assay (24, 48, and 72 h post-irradiation). Serum starvation did not alter LDH release by non-irradiated SHED, while LDH release decreased significantly in groups irradiated in 1% FBS (I and III), but not in groups irradiated in 10% FBS (V-VII), regardless the pre-irradiation conditions (protocols A/B). Cell viability was significantly higher 24 h after irradiation, in most protocol A groups. In contrast, cell viability remained mostly unaltered in protocol B groups. LLLT contributed to maintain membrane integrity in SHED subjected to nutritional deficit before and during irradiation with 0.10 or 0.30 W. Short serum starvation before irradiation improved SHED viability at 24 h post-irradiation.

OBJECTIVES: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to critically appraise the evidence on the relationship of oral health beliefs with dental fear and anxiety in distinct patient groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Observational studies were retrieved by Cochrane, Embase Search, Portal BVS, Clinical Trials, Ovid, Open Gray, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, and they were manually checked for the inclusion of additional articles of interest. The assessment of quality of studies was performed by the application of three different versions of the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, for cohort, case-control, and cross-sectional studies. Only studies with low or unclear/moderate risk of bias contributed to meta-analyses, regarding the analysis of random effects of mean differences of dental beliefs scores between dental fear/anxiety and control groups, and the correlation of dental beliefs with dental fear and anxiety measures. RESULTS: Of 276 articles initially retrieved, 10 were included in the systematic review, while only 6 studies with unclear/moderate risk of bias were considered in meta-analyses. The mean difference of dental beliefs effects was higher in patients with dental fear and anxiety compared to controls (1.20; 95% CI 0.27-2.14; P = 0.01). Additionally, a moderate positive correlation was observed between dental beliefs and dental fear measures (r = 0.54, 95% CI 0.47-0.60;P< 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Based on these results, the presence of negative health beliefs is directly related to the increase of dental fear and anxiety; however, these findings are supported in studies with unclear/moderate risk of bias. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Dental fear and anxiety is an important obstacle for the access of dental treatment and patient-dentist relationship, leading to inadequate oral health levels.
