RESUMO

Rice is the foremost staple food in the world, safeguarding the global food and nutritional security. Rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and water deficits are threatening global rice productivity and sustainability. Under real field conditions these climatic factors often interact with each other resulting in impacts that are remarkably different compared to individual factor exposure. Rice soils exposed to drought and elevated CO2 (eCO2) alters the biomass, diversity and activity of soil microorganisms affecting greenhouse gas (GHG) emission dynamics. In this review we have discussed the impacts of eCO2 and water deficit on agronomic, biochemical and physiological responses of rice and GHGs emissions from rice soils. Drought usually results in oxidative stress due to stomatal closure, dry weight reduction, formation of reactive oxygen species, decrease in relative water content and increase in electrolyte leakage at almost all growth and developmental phases of rice. Elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration reduces the negative effects of drought by improving plant water relations, reducing stomatal opening, decreasing transpiration, increasing canopy photosynthesis, shortening crop growth period and increasing the antioxidant metabolite activities in rice. Increased scientific understanding of the effects of drought and eCO2 on rice agronomy, physiology and GHG emission dynamics of rice soil is essential for devising adaptation options. Integration of novel agronomic practices viz., crop establishment methods and alternate cropping systems with improved water and nutrient management are important steps to help rice farmers cope with drought and eCO2. The review summarizes future research needs for ensuring sustained global food security under future warmer, drier and high CO2 conditions.

RESUMO

Lipid peroxidation was assessed by measuring malondialdehyde (MDA) in 30 patients with falciparum malaria and 20 controls (10 healthy adults and 10 patients of vivax malaria). Mean serum MDA was 0.96 +/- 0.38 nmol/ml, 1.1 +/- 0.17 nmol/ml and 2.9 +/- 1.1 nmol/ml in healthy controls, disease controls and falciparum malaria patients, respectively. Levels were significantly high (P less than 0.001) in patients with falciparum malaria. Higher values were associated with more number of complications and deaths.

RESUMO

The incidence of the coronary artery aneurysm varies from 1.5-5%. Atherosclerosis is the most common cause of coronary artery aneurysm in adults. A discrete, giant, saccular atherosclerotic coronary artery aneurysm in an artery without significant proximal stenosis is rare. We report the first such case of a giant atherosclerotic coronary artery aneurysm successfully treated with coil embolization.

RESUMO

The proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) technique was applied to the identification and analysis of gunshot residues. Studies were made of the type of bullet and bullet hole identification, firearm discharge element profiles, the effect of various target backings, and hand swabbings. The discussion of the results reviews the sensitivity of the PIXE technique, its nondestructive nature, and its role in determining the distance from the gun to the victim and identifying the type of bullet used and whether a wound was made by a bullet or not. The high sensitivity of the PIXE technique, which is able to analyze samples as small as 0.1 to 1 ng, and its usefulness for detecting a variety of elements should make it particularly useful in firearms residue investigations.

RESUMO

We describe a patient who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention combined with bilateral iliac and left renal artery angioplasty during the same sitting. Stenting of the coronary and peripheral arteries was performed employing the "direct stenting" technique. No complications occurred. The patient was discharged 2 days after the intervention and remains asymptomatic, leading a fully active life during 1 year of follow-up. To our knowledge, unstaged coronary stenting combined with direct stenting of the renal and both common iliac arteries has not been reported previously in India.

RESUMO

Conventional coronary stenting is done after pre-dilatation of the lesion. The bleeding complications and incidence of subacute stent thrombosis have been reduced significantly by the use of antiplatelet agents and high pressure balloon inflation to ensure complete stent expansion. Elective stenting also can be done without pre-dilatation by "stent alone technique." This approach significantly reduces the procedural cost and ischaemia time, avoiding potential complications such as abrupt vessel closure because of extensive dissection after conventional angioplasty and prior to stent deployment. Eighty patients of stable angina pectoris suitable for coronary angioplasty underwent stenting without pre-dilatation. Out of the 100 stents used, 38 were hand-crimped and 62 were pre-mounted. The target vessels were left anterior descending artery in 56 percent, right coronary artery in 32 percent and left circumflex in 12 percent. The procedure was successful in 88 percent lesions. In 12 percent stenting could be done only after pre-dilatation. In all these, there was proximal tortuosity and calcification. The fluoroscopy time was 10.2 +/- 4.5 minutes. The average number of balloons used per lesion was 1.08. Stent embolisation occurred in only one patient. There were no major adverse cardiac events in any of the patients. Thus stenting without pre-dilatation is safe. Patients who are eligible for stenting without pre-dilatation are those with stable angina pectoris without fluoroscopically visible calcium or coronary artery tortuosity and with lesions of moderate complexity.

RESUMO

Tricuspid valve endocarditis (TVE) following non-septic abortion without an evidence of pelvic inflammation and clinically audible murmur is rare. We report here two cases of TVE following elective abortion.

RESUMO

Elective coronary artery stenting was performed in 242 consecutive patients in our centre for complex lesions (Type B, C), proximal lesions, restenotic lesions, total occlusion and venous grafts. The procedural success rate was 94.21%. Three patients (1.23%) required emergency coronary artery bypass surgery. Acute and sub-acute thrombosis rate was 1.26% and 4.13%, respectively. There was one in-hospital death (0.41%). 164 patients were followed up clinically for a mean period of 11 +/- 6 months (range 1 month to 30 months). Angiographic follow up was done in 68 patients with a restenosis rate of 16.17%.

RESUMO

Outbreaks of Dengue/Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever have been occurring in the National Capital Territory (NCT) Delhi from time to time. A massive outbreak of Dengue/DHF causing considerable mortality occurred in 1996 in the NCT, Delhi. Since this outbreak regular entomological surveillance has been instituted, for timely preventive action against Dengue/DHF. The Central Cross Checking Organisation (CCO) of the National Malaria Eradication Programme cross-checks Aedes surveillance activities in Delhi. In this paper we present our experiences in entomological surveillance in relation Dengue, to share them with other workers in this field.
