BACKGROUND: Cupriavidus gilardii is an aerobic, gram-negative, motile, glucose-nonfermenting bacillus, first described in 1999. Typically, it exhibits low pathogenicity in humans, causing opportunistic infections primarily in individuals with compromised immune systems. This bacterium has been also found in various environmental sources such as plants and contaminated soils. Notably, there have been no documented cases of C. gilardii infections in animals. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report outlines a bovine neonatal diarrhea outbreak that occurred in Northern Greece, during which C. gilardii was isolated. Faecal samples from 5-day-old calves were collected and transported to the laboratory for further examination. Bacterial culture and next generation sequencing techniques were employed to confirm the presence of this bacterium in the samples. Following the isolation and identification of C. gilardii from the samples, an autogenous vaccine was produced and administered to the cows within the farm. Subsequent to vaccination, a progressive reduction in calf diarrhea and deaths was observed, leading to their eventual complete resolution. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first documentation of C. gilardii isolation from cases of bovine neonatal diarrhea. CONCLUSION: This case report presents the first isolation case of C. gilardii from animal samples and more specifically from calf faecal samples. It represents an important observation, providing evidence that this opportunistic human pathogen could contribute to clinical symptoms in animals.

BACKGROUND: Astrovirus, Norovirus and Sapovirus are widely distributed viruses in humans and animals worldwide. They have frequently been associated with disease, mainly of gastroenteric nature. In dogs, these viruses have been detected both in symptomatic and asymptomatic animals, mainly of young age. METHODS: In the present epidemiologic study, we investigated the presence of canine Astrovirus (CAstV), canine Norovirus (canine NoV) and canine Sapovirus (Canine SaV) in saliva and stools of 201 domestic dogs originating from throughout Greece, based on two different molecular methods, i.e. conventional and SYBR-Green Real-time RT-PCR. The samples derived from young and adult asymptomatic and symptomatic animals. CAstV was detected in 15/201 (7.5%) and 29/201 (15%) of the examined dogs using conventional RT-PCR and SYBR-Green Real time RT-PCR, respectively. RESULTS: The prevalence of the virus was higher at healthy dogs, with a slight discrepancy of the two methods on the aspect of age (67% young dogs with the method of conventional RT-PCR, versus 52% adult positive dogs with the method of SYBR-Green Real-time RT-PCR). Canine SaV was detected in 52/201 (23%) of the dogs (mainly young and asymptomatic), with the method of SYBR-Green Real-time RT-PCR only, while canine NoV was not detected in any sample with either of the two methods applied. Sequencing of the CAstV positive samples resulted in the acquisition of one CAstV sequence. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed the results, clustering the CAstV sequence with homologous canine hosting sequences from other countries. CONCLUSIONS: CAstV and Canine SaV were proved to circulate in Greek dogs. SYBR-Green Real time RT-PCR showed greater sensitivity in the detection of these viruses. Additionally, we were able to specify the CAstV strain that circulates in Greece, through phylogenetic analysis. To our knowledge, this is the first epidemiological study of CAstV and canine SaV in dogs in Greece, as well as the first time detected in dogs from Greece.

The present study investigates the pathogenicity of two recently isolated strains of Suid herpesvirus 1 (SuHV1), the Greek strain Hercules and the Chinese strain HeN1, in unvaccinated pigs and in pigs vaccinated with a Bartha-K61 strain. In an experiment performed in negative pressure kiosks (isolators), 45-day old seronegative pigs previously oronasally /intramuscularly vaccinated with the Bartha-K61 vaccine strain, along with unvaccinated controls, were challenged either with the Hercules strain or the HeN1 strain of SuHV1. All animals were observed daily for clinical signs and body temperature and nasal swabs, faeces, blood and bodyweight were collected up to a maximum period of 20 days post-challenge (dpc). The results showed that, in the unvaccinated pigs, HeN1 strain was more virulent than the Hercules strain, with increased mortality, shorter time to death and higher group clinical score (p < 0.05). However, after vaccination with the Bartha-K61 vaccine, there was a drastic reduction in morbidity, mortality, bodyweight loss and virus excretion to almost a similar extent in both strains (p < 0.05). No significant differences were seen among the pigs of the two vaccinated groups compared to unvaccinated unchallenged controls, except a slight elevation in body temperature and in clinical score in the HeN1 vaccinees at 2 and 3 dpc, while bodyweight gain was similar to that of the negative control pigs. Our study showed that despite differences in virulence, the standard vaccination scheme with the Bartha-K61 strain could equally protect nursery pigs against both the European and Chinese strains.

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis still remains an endemic disease for both livestock and human in Greece, influencing the primary sector and national economy in general. Although farm animals and particularly ruminants constitute the natural hosts of the disease, transmission to humans is not uncommon, thus representing a serious occupational disease as well. Under this prism, knowledge concerning Brucella species distribution in ruminants is considered a high priority. There are various molecular methodologies for Brucella detection with however differential discriminant capacity. Hence, the aim of this survey was to achieve nationally Brucella epidemiology baseline genotyping data at species and subtype level, as well as to evaluate the pros and cons of different molecular techniques utilized for detection of Brucella species. Thirty-nine tissue samples from 30 domestic ruminants, which were found positive applying a screening PCR, were tested by four different molecular techniques i.e. sequencing of the 16S rRNA, the BP26 and the OMP31 regions, and the MLVA typing panel 1 assay of minisatellite markers. RESULTS: Only one haplotype was revealed from the 16S rRNA sequencing analysis, indicating that molecular identification of Brucella bacteria based on this marker might be feasible solely up to genus level. BP26 sequencing analysis and MLVA were in complete agreement detecting both B. melitensis and B. abortus. An interesting exception was observed in 11 samples, of lower quality extracted DNA, in which not all expected MLVA amplicons were produced and identification was based on the remaining ones as well as on BP26. On the contrary OMP31 failed to provide a clear band in any of the examined samples. CONCLUSIONS: The present study reveals the constant circulation of Brucella bacteria in ruminants throughout Greece. Further, according to our results, BP26 gene represents a very good alternative to MLVA minisatellite assay, particularly in lower quality DNA samples.

RESUMO

While expert systems are artificial intelligence (AI) agents, they share many common characteristics with human experts. As technology progresses, such systems are not just able to make simple decisions following "simplistic" linear logical protocols; they "behave" as real experts in at least two ways: by demonstrating superb decision-making skills and by conforming to the social norms for expertise, i.e., they "feel" as human experts. A review of the common characteristics of human experts may have important implications for the direction of the development for such systems. Implications for bioinformatics and future research (especially concerning the accompanying concept of "expert generalist") are also discussed.

Taking as a starting point that the only proving method in mathematics is logic, as, for example, is used in the logical setup of the paper (arguments, i.e., premises leading to conclusions, logical inferences), we describe a new tool for analysis and validation of publications in the field of bioinformatics. In striking contrast to the abundance of statistical programs and packages available to bioinformatics researchers, no such logical tool is available to them. Therefore the creation of such a tool is necessary; a form of expert system that may do the following procedures: Evaluate papers giving a score of logical consistency and completeness (i.e., how many conclusions were investigated in comparison to all possible conclusions based on the set of premises used by the researchers). Help researchers and academics better plan their protocols by automating the process of analysis of the premises given. Be able to locate and analyze arguments directly from the text of the scientific paper, from certain parts of it (e.g., the "conclusions" section, or even from the whole text, based on advanced AI algorithms). Provide a new standard for future publications in any form and, later, in any scientific field.

Ligneous conjunctivitis is a rare, autosomal recessive, membranous conjunctivitis characterized by a deficiency in type 1 plasminogen. The absence of normal plasmin activity results in the formation of fibrin-rich, membranous material that typically manifests on the palpebral conjunctiva. Surgical treatment often causes irritation of the conjunctiva and accelerated recurrence of pseudomembranes. In this interventional case report, the authors document the results of treatment with topical plasminogen following conjunctival pseudomembrane excision in a 32-year-old woman. The patient underwent pseudomembrane excision in the OS followed immediately by hourly topical application of plasminogen eye drops. The plasminogen was prepared from pooled human plasma purchased under Food and Drug Administration approval from DiaPharma. Follow-up evaluation at 1 week, 1 month, and 5 months showed no evidence of recurrent pseudomembranous change. Adjunctive topical plasminogen application appears to be an effective and safe method of controlling pseudomembrane recurrence in patients with ligneous conjunctivitis.

OBJECTIVE: Clinical trials demonstrated that ketamine exhibits rapid antidepressant efficacy when administered in subanaesthetic dosages. We reviewed currently available literature investigating efficacy, response rates and safety profile. METHODS: Twelve studies investigating unipolar, seven on bipolar depression were included after search in medline, scopus and web of science. RESULTS: Randomized, placebo-controlled or open-label trials reported antidepressant response rates after 24 h on primary outcome measures at 61%. The average reduction of Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) was 10.9 points, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) 15.7 points and Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) 20.8 points. Ketamine was always superior to placebo. Most common side effects were dizziness, blurred vision, restlessness, nausea/vomiting and headache, which were all reversible. Relapse rates ranged between 60% and 92%. To provide best practice-based information to patients, a consent-form for application and modification in local language is included. CONCLUSIONS: Ketamine constitutes a novel, rapid and efficacious treatment option for patients suffering from treatment resistant depression and exhibits rapid and significant anti-suicidal effects. New administration routes might serve as alternative to intravenous regimes for potential usage in outpatient settings. However, long-term side effects are not known and short duration of antidepressant response need ways to prolong ketamine's efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Drug-induced liver injury is a common cause of liver damage and the most frequent reason for withdrawal of a drug in the United States. The symptoms of drug-induced liver damage are extremely diverse, with some patients remaining asymptomatic. METHODS: This observational study is based on data of Arzneimittelsicherheit in der Psychiatrie, a multicenter drug surveillance program in German-speaking countries (Austria, Germany, and Switzerland) recording severe drug reactions in psychiatric inpatients. Of 184234 psychiatric inpatients treated with antidepressants between 1993 and 2011 in 80 psychiatric hospitals, 149 cases of drug-induced liver injury (0.08%) were reported. RESULTS: The study revealed that incidence rates of drug-induced liver injury were highest during treatment with mianserine (0.36%), agomelatine (0.33%), and clomipramine (0.23%). The lowest probability of drug-induced liver injury occurred during treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors ([0.03%), especially escitalopram [0.01%], citalopram [0.02%], and fluoxetine [0.02%]). The most common clinical symptoms were nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite, and abdominal pain. In contrast to previous findings, the dosage at the timepoint when DILI occurred was higher in 7 of 9 substances than the median overall dosage. Regarding liver enzymes, duloxetine and clomipramine were associated with increased glutamat-pyruvat-transaminase and glutamat-oxalat-transaminase values, while mirtazapine hardly increased enzyme values. By contrast, duloxetine performed best in terms of gamma-glutamyl-transferase values, and trimipramine, clomipramine, and venlafaxine performed worst. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are less likely than the other antidepressants, examined in this study, to precipitate drug-induced liver injury, especially in patients with preknown liver dysfunction.

PURPOSE: Mood disorders are present in more than 90% of suicides, and a genetic vulnerability to suicidality is well established. Numerous lines of evidence relate the transcription factor Cyclic adenosine monophosphate Response Element Binding protein (CREB1) to suicide, and to the aetiology of major depressive disorder (MDD). Our aim was to test for association between CREB1 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and both suicide risk (SR) and a personal history of suicide attempt (SA) in MDD patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A sample of 250 MDD patients collected in the context of a European multicenter resistant depression study and treated with antidepressants over a period of at least 4 weeks were genotyped for five CREB1 SNPs (rs2709376, rs2253206, rs7569963, rs7594560, and rs4675690). To assess suicidality, the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) and the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D) were applied. RESULTS: Neither single-marker nor haplotypic association were found between SR and/or a personal history of SA with any of the investigated SNPs after multiple testing correction. For females, an association between rs2709376 and a personal history of SA was found (p = 0.016), however not resisting multiple testing correction. CONCLUSIONS: Although we found significant CREB1 single marker association with a personal history of SA in female MDD patients, this finding could not be confirmed in haplotypic analyses after multiple testing correction. Larger well-defined cohorts are required to confirm or refute a possible association of CREB1 and SA in female MDD patients.

BACKGROUND: Antidepressants (ADs) are known to have the potential to cause various cardiovascular adverse drug reactions (ADRs). The tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) were first revealed to be a possible source of cardiovascular ADRs. In recent years, newer classes of ADs were also suggested to have a higher risk of cardiovascular adverse effects. In particular, the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) were suspected to have the potential to induce QTc interval prolongation, and therefore increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmia. This descriptive study is based on the continuous pharmacovigilance program of German-speaking countries (Austria, Germany, and Switzerland), the Arzneimittelsicherheit in der Psychiatrie (AMSP), which assesses severe ADRs occurring in clinical routine situations. METHODS: Of 169,278 psychiatric inpatients treated with ADs between 1993 and 2010, 198 cases of cardiovascular ADRs (0.12%) were analyzed. RESULTS: Our study showed that the incidence rates of cardiovascular ADRs were highest during treatment with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (0.27%), TCAs (0.15%), and serotonin noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (0.14%); the risk of occurring during treatment with SSRIs (0.08%) was significantly lower. The noradrenergic and specific serotonergic AD mirtazapine (0.07%) had a significantly lower risk of cardiovascular ADRs than all other ADs. Severe hypotension was the most frequent ADR, followed by hypertension, arrhythmia, and in some rare cases heart failure. CONCLUSIONS: Despite certain limitations due to the AMSP study design, our observations on cardiovascular ADRs can contribute to a better knowledge of the cardiovascular risk profiles of antidepressants in the clinical routine setting. However, prospective studies are needed to verify our findings.

The extent to which a family history of mood disorders and suicide could impact on clinical features of patients suffering from major depression (MD) and bipolar disorder (BD) has received relatively little attention so far. The aim of the present work is, therefore, to assess the clinical implications of the presence of at least one first- and/or second-degree relative with a history of MD, BD and suicide in a large sample of patients with MD or BD. One thousand one hundred and fifty-seven subjects with MD and 686 subjects with BD were recruited within the context of two large projects. The impact of a family history of MD, BD, and suicide-considered both separately and together-on clinical and socio-demographic variables was investigated. A family history of MD, BD, and suicide was more common in BD patients than in MD patients. A positive family history of mood disorders and/or suicide as well as a positive family history of MD and BD separately considered, but not a positive history of suicide alone, were significantly associated with a comorbidity with several anxiety disorders and inversely associated with age of onset. The clinical implications as well as the limitations of our findings are discussed.

PURPOSE: Clinical, radiographic, and molecular studies have shown that patients with thyroid-associated orbitopathy exhibit volumetric expansion of eyebrow tissues. This clinicopathologic entity has been termed thyroid-associated periorbitopathy. The goal of this study was to determine whether high-resolution ultrasonography could be used to reliably quantify thyroid-associated periorbitopathy. METHODS: Institutional review board approval was obtained. The internal case-control study consisted of 12 subjects with unilateral-asymmetric thyroid-associated orbitopathy. High-resolution ultrasonography using a 15-MHz probe (Logiq p6) was performed by a single operator. Measurements were obtained 0.5 cm cephalad to the superior orbital rim at the midpupillary sagittal level. For each subject and tissue layer thickness (total tissue, dermis fat, retro-orbicularis oculi fat), the measured values on the less affected side were subtracted from those on the more severely diseased side. Summary statistics were used to analyze results. RESULTS: High-resolution ultrasonography effectively demonstrated asymmetric expansion of total eyebrow tissue (p < 0.0001) and retro-orbicularis oculi fat (p = 0.0003). No significant difference in dermis fat thickness was found between the 2 sides (p = 0.2). Hertel exophthalmometry measurements were statistically different between the 2 sides (p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that high-resolution ultrasonography independently confirms previously published studies of retro-orbicularis oculi fat expansion in patients with thyroid-associated orbitopathy. Compared with CT, MRI, and tissue biopsy, high-resolution ultrasonography is a more practical and cost-effective way to quantify and track thyroid-associated periorbitopathy over time. With its potential for real-time tissue assessment, high-resolution ultrasonography may be best suited for future studies of the dynamic relationship between globe and periorbital structures.

The poultry red mite (PRM), Dermanyssus gallinae, is arguably the most harmful, ubiquitous haematophagous ectoparasite infesting egg-laying hens. PRM is a vector of various microorganisms, with some being important for food microbiology and public health. The present study aimed to investigate the presence of specific pathogens, including Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp. and Listeria spp., carried by PRM infesting a chicken farm in Greece. Mites were caught using cardboard traps (Avivet), and 100 unwashed PRM were homogenized and used for microbiological cultures. Microbiological cultures were carried out on general and selective substrates to detect the above-mentioned bacteria. Specifically for Listeria spp., DNA was extracted from bacteria grown in Tryptone Soya Yeast Extract Agar using a commercial kit. The hly gene encoding the Listeriolysin O protein was amplified by PCR. Mites were identified as D. gallinae using morphological keys as well as by COI DNA barcoding. Microbiological cultures and PCR assays were positive for Listeria monocytogenes. No other bacteria were detected. The current study constitutes the first molecular isolation of L. monocytogenes from D. gallinae, confirming that PRM can carry this food-borne pathogen. PRM control measures and hygiene practices should be applied to minimize any possible contamination risk of poultry products with L. monocytogenes and safeguard public health.

PURPOSE: Classically, the aesthetic outcomes of eyelid retraction surgery in patients with thyroid-associated orbitopathy have been described in reference to eyelid margin position and marginal reflex distance. A critically important component of upper eyelid contour is the tarsal platform show (TPS). With this study, the authors aimed to assess the hypothesis that modification of the tarsal platform in posterior eyelid retraction surgery has a significant effect on the final aesthetic outcome. METHODS: In a retrospective, observational, case-cohort study, the authors reviewed the medical records of 36 patients with thyroid-associated orbitopathy who underwent primary eyelid retraction surgery by 1 surgeon. Patients who underwent eyelid retraction surgery at the time of orbital decompression were excluded. The surgical technique consisted of posterior approach conjunctival release of Müeller muscle and graded recession of the levator aponeurosis. To address lateral flare, dissection was carried toward the lateral orbital rim with spreading of the lateral horn of the levator aponeurosis. Outcome measures were millimeters of TPS, millimeters of brow fat span, and symmetry of the eyelid margin position. Randomized preoperative and postoperative standardized photographs were evaluated in masked fashion by 4 surgeons to grade cosmetic outcomes. RESULTS: Fifteen patients (24 eyelids) met the inclusion criteria. Mean follow-up period was 6 months (range, 3-12). Mean TPS increased from 2.27 mm (standard deviation, 1.9 mm) to 4.77 mm (standard deviation, 1.7 mm; p < 0.05). Mean brow fat span remained unchanged, from 13.22 mm (standard deviation, 2.2 mm) to 13.25 mm (standard deviation, 1.9; p > 0.05). Evaluation of the aesthetic outcomes (eyelid contour, eyelid symmetry, and TPS) by 4 masked observers characterized the relevance of TPS in the postoperative aesthetics of eyelid contour and symmetry. CONCLUSIONS: In upper eyelid retraction surgery, the ability to control the TPS has a significant impact on the final aesthetic outcome. Posterior approach eyelid retraction surgery can control eyelid contour and can represent an ideal surgical approach in carefully selected patients. However, it has limited ability to control upper orbital volume and eyebrow and orbital fat (brow fat span). This can result in relative overelongation of the TPS. Factors such as ethnic characteristics, bony asymmetry, brow fat span, and premorbid TPS influence cosmetic outcomes achieved by the anterior or posterior approach. For optimal aesthetic results in eyelid retraction surgery, the decision for anterior versus posterior approach should be individualized.

PURPOSE: We propose that brow enlargement seen in patients with thyroid-associated orbitopathy (TAO) occurs secondary to the autoimmune process in Graves disease and that the changes in brow fat are histologically identical to those seen in orbital fat. METHODS: With informed consent, brow and orbital fat was obtained from patients with TAO and from patients with no significant past medical history undergoing orbital decompression, blepharoplasty, and/or brow fat removal. Histologic examination was performed on the orbital and brow fat. RESULTS: Fat histologies obtained from patients with TAO and those without known systemic disease were compared. Specimens from patients with TAO showed an increase of fibrosis and fibrous septae. Furthermore, certain biologic markers, including insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor ß (IGF-1Rß) and thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor (TSHR), were increased in the fat obtained from patients with TAO. This was identical in both the brow and the orbital fat. Fat from patients with no significant past medical history showed normal fat histology, absence of fibrous septae, and decreased marker expression. CONCLUSION: Graves disease is a systemic autoimmune disease that affects patients in a variety of ways. In addition to the orbital changes seen in these patients, we have observed an increase in the brow fat compartment. We are intrigued to find that the histologic changes are identical in both the orbital and the brow fat of patients with TAO. The increased IGF-1Rß and TSHR expression in both the brow and the orbital fat further support their role as putative markers in patients with Graves disease.

Volume enhancement/restoration addresses a key component of facial aging and plays an increasingly central role in facial rejuvenation. Advancing our understanding of the structure and morphology of facial aging-and the changes that can be induced with currently-available fillers-will optimize treatment and provide a consensus for appropriate selection of agents and procedures. By elucidating anatomic relationships-particularly dynamic relationships-ultrasonography may facilitate the selection and application of rejuvenation agents and procedures such as lower eyelid blepharoplasty with hyaluronic acid reinforcement of the middle lamella and lateral canthal retinaculum, en glove lysis and dermal fat grafting in the retractor plane for lower eyelid retraction, "posterior girdle" effect with high-viscosity fillers for malar festoons, dynamic analysis of hyaluronic acid within the levator plane for upper eyelid retraction, and serial distribution and integration of autologous fat injection in the lower lid compartments. In this article, the authors describe use of dynamic high-resolution ultrasonography as a tool in defining and improving the outcomes of periocular facial rejuvenation.

BACKGROUND: The eyebrows and eyebrow fat pads, key structures in upper facial aesthetics, are particularly vulnerable to age-related changes. OBJECTIVES: In this study, the authors compare the impact of aging on the eyebrows and eyebrow fat pad volume in men and women through three-dimensional (3D) volumetric analysis. METHODS: Electronic medical records of patients seen at the Jules Stein Eye Institute in the Division of Orbital and Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery between 2005 and 2010 were reviewed. Patients were included if they had undergone investigative imaging of the orbit for unilateral pathology. Computed tomography (CT) scans of patients with Graves disease diagnosis, extensive orbital trauma, and/or previous eyebrow surgery were excluded. A total of 52 CT scans (24 men and 28 women) were retained for analysis. A 3D reconstruction software was used to analyze the scans and calculate volumes of the retroorbicularis oculi fat (ROOF), galeal fat (ROOF and subcutaneous fat), and soft tissue muscles. RESULTS: Galeal and brow fat volumes showed a significant positive trend toward enlargement in women (P values of .01 and .05, respectively). Although men showed a tendency toward fat enlargement with age, this was not statistically significant. Soft tissue-muscle volume decreased significantly in aging women (9.32 mm(3)/y) (P = .02). Data indicated that soft tissue volume in men tended to increase with age (3.92 mm(3)/y) but not significantly (P = .36). Neither total volume nor brow thickness appeared to change significantly in women (P = .56, P = .73). In men, total volume and brow thickness showed weak evidence of increasing with age (P = .12, P = .22). Linear regressions of Hertel measurements with and without sex interaction showed no statistically significant trend between the amount of proptosis and the galeal or brow fat. CONCLUSIONS: Although overall eyebrow volume does not change with age, the relative contribution of fat and soft tissue to the total volume does seem to change. This pattern also differs between males and females. As women age, the fat volume increases and the soft tissue volume decreases. In men, the shift from soft tissue volume to fat volume is less pronounced. Although many clinicians have been drawn to the concept of fat volume deflation as a key element of facial aging, this study does not support this perspective in the eyebrow fat pad. An increasingly refined understanding of the dynamics of facial aging is mandatory for clinical diagnosis and will likely provide the framework from which to develop more innovative treatment options.

Caliciviruses are single stranded RNA viruses, non-enveloped structurally, that are implicated in the non-bacterial gastroenteritis in various mammal species. Particularly in swine, viral gastroenteritis represents a major problem worldwide, responsible for significant economic losses for the pig industry. Among the wide range of viruses that are the proven or suspected etiological agents of gastroenteritis, the pathogenicity of the members of Caliciviridae family is among the less well understood. In this context, the present review presents and discusses the current knowledge of two genera belonging to this family, namely the Norovirus and the Sapovirus, in relation to swine. Aspects such as pathogenicity, clinical evidence, symptoms, epidemiology and worldwide prevalence, genomic diversity, identification tools as well as interchanging hosts are not only reviewed but also critically evaluated. Generally, although often asymptomatic in pigs, the prevalence of those microbes in pig farms exhibits a worldwide substantial increasing trend. It should be mentioned, however, that the factors influencing the symptomatology of these viruses are still far from well established. Interestingly, both these viruses are also characterized by high genetic diversity. These high levels of molecular diversity in Caliciviridae family are more likely a result of recombination rather than evolutionary or selective adaptation via mutational steps. Thus, molecular markers for their detection are mostly based on conserved regions such as the RdRp region. Finally, it should be emphasized that Norovirus and the Sapovirus may also infect other domestic, farm and wild animals, including humans, and therefore their surveillance and clarification role in diseases such as diarrhea is a matter of public health importance as well.
