RESUMO

Introduction and objective: Mobile health applications (mHealth) can bring revolutionary changes to health care by making it more accessible, cost-effective, and efficient. The successful adoption of mHealth is largely determined by its acceptance by providers and end users. The acceptance of mHealth among nursing students, who are the future nurses, needs to be understood. This study aimed to determine the preferences, acceptability, and usage of mHealth applications among undergraduate nursing students. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in two selected universities in southern and northern India. A convenience sample of 567 undergraduate nursing students was recruited for the study. The data were collected using a structured questionnaire via Google Forms. Results: mHealth applications were presently used by 32.9% of the students. The most common types of mHealth applications used were diet related (27.6%) and lifestyle related (23.4%). The majority of nursing students were willing to use mobile phones for consulting health professionals (78.8%) for prevention and management of health and disease. (83.1%), and for emergencies (73.3%). While more than half of the students were willing to recommend mHealth applications for patients, those students who were using two or more mHealth apps were more likely to recommend the same for the patients. Conclusion: The results of the study highlight about the usage of mobile health applications among the nursing students. The students consider mHealth applications to be useful for delivering health-related services to end users. The study underscores the need to sensitize students about the possible usage of mHealth in healthcare delivery.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Professional practice attributes of nurses help to promote nursing as a profession and advance nursing education. Nursing professionals need to demonstrate a high level of professional commitment to their practices and must be professionally competent to perform their roles. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Descriptive survey was conducted at the nursing educational institutes affiliated with the Indian Nursing Council and situated in the selected Northern Indian states. The sample included 343 nurse educators who were selected using simple random sampling. The self-reported method was adopted to collect data where three questionnaires including socio-demographic information, organizational characteristics of current place of work, and professional practice attributes assessment criteria were used. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data analysis. RESULTS: Overall, the study's participants scored poorly on professional practice attributes (Mean, SD: 1.98, 2.03), which were linked to their personal (age and gender), professional (educational background, professional qualification, current designation), and organizational (duration of organization's establishment, courses provided, college management) characteristics. CONCLUSION: The findings highlighted the need for nurse educators to be more competent and dedicated in their respective fields. The study also suggests that in order to raise the standard of nursing education, nursing regulatory bodies like nursing councils, universities, and governments must take the necessary steps to foster the professional development of nurse educators.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Nurse educators require to exhibit specialized behaviors that demonstrate the beliefs of the nursing profession. The aim of the study is to explore the factors influencing professionalism among nurse educators in the selected nursing educational institutes of Indian States. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Qualitative approach was adopted where multiple focus group discussions were planned and conducted. The study was carried out among nurse educators from the Northern Indian states. Thematic analysis, using the argumentative interactions approach was used. The consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ) guide were followed. RESULTS: Three types of factors, that is, individual (micro-level), organizational (meso-level), and external professional occupational (macro-level) were explored, where individual factors emerged as having a strong positive impact on nurse educators' professionalism as compared to other factors. Poor organizational infrastructure, privatization of educational institutions, and other related factors were reported as having a negative influence on nurse educators' professionalism. CONCLUSION: Most of the educational institutions included in the present study, lacked basic infrastructure/facilities for the professional development of nurse educators and professionalism.

RESUMO

Introduction: Safe motherhood ensures safe pregnancy and childbirth. One of the noteworthy causes of maternal morbidity and mortality is the complications arising from prolonged or obstructed labour. World Health Organization recommends the use of partograph to significantly reduce the maternal mortality crisis. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel partograph in terms of maternal and perinatal outcomes along with its utility. Materials and Methods: A total of 400 intranatal women were selected in a non-randomized control trial to evaluate the effectiveness of novel partograph on selected maternal and perinatal outcomes. Subjects in experimental group (n=200) received care with newly developed partograph whereas subjects in control group (n=200) received standard care. Effectiveness was determined at a significance level of α ≤ 0.05. Utility of the novel partograph was determined as perceived by nurses. Results: There was significant reduction in the duration of the 1st and 2nd stage of labour (P=0.023 and 0.006 respectively) and number of vaginal examinations performed during labour (P=0.017) among mothers in the experimental group. Significant improvement in the Apgar score (P=0.005) was also observed among the infants of mothers in experimental group. Novel partograph was considered as of having extreme utility by 71% nurses. Conclusion: Study concluded that subjects monitored by the partograph experienced improved maternal and perinatal outcomes. It was found to be having extreme utility.
