RESUMO

Among the three active aldehyde oxidases in Arabidopsis thaliana leaves (AAO1-3), AAO3, which catalyzes the oxidation of abscisic-aldehyde to abscisic-acid, was shown recently to function as a reactive aldehyde detoxifier. Notably, aao2KO mutants exhibited less senescence symptoms and lower aldehyde accumulation, such as acrolein, benzaldehyde, and 4-hydroxyl-2-nonenal (HNE) than in wild-type leaves exposed to UV-C or Rose-Bengal. The effect of AAO2 expression absence on aldehyde detoxification by AAO3 and/or AAO1 was studied by comparing the response of wild-type plants to the response of single-functioning aao1 mutant (aao1S), aao2KO mutants, and single-functioning aao3 mutants (aao3Ss). Notably, aao3Ss exhibited similar aldehyde accumulation and chlorophyll content to aao2KO treated with UV-C or Rose-Bengal. In contrast, wild-type and aao1S exhibited higher aldehyde accumulation that resulted in lower remaining chlorophyll than in aao2KO leaves, indicating that the absence of active AAO2 enhanced AAO3 detoxification activity in aao2KO mutants. In support of this notion, employing abscisic-aldehyde as a specific substrate marker for AAO3 activity revealed enhanced AAO3 activity in aao2KO and aao3Ss leaves compared to wild-type treated with UV-C or Rose-Bengal. The similar abscisic-acid level accumulated in leaves of unstressed or stressed genotypes indicates that aldehyde detoxification by AAO3 is the cause for better stress resistance in aao2KO mutants. Employing the sulfuration process (known to activate aldehyde oxidases) in wild-type, aao2KO, and molybdenum-cofactor sulfurase (aba3-1) mutant plants revealed that the active AAO2 in WT employs sulfuration processes essential for AAO3 activity level, resulting in the lower AAO3 activity in WT than AAO3 activity in aao2KO.

The present study aims to explore the potential of a plasma-membrane localized PIP2-type aquaporin protein sourced from the halophyte Salicornia brachiata to alleviate salinity and water deficit stress tolerance in a model plant through transgenic intervention. Transgenic plants overexpressing SbPIP2 gene showed improved physio-biochemical parameters like increased osmolytes (proline, total sugar, and amino acids), antioxidants (polyphenols), pigments and membrane stability under salinity and drought stresses compared to control plants [wild type (WT) and vector control (VC) plants]. Multivariate statistical analysis showed that, under water and salinity stresses, osmolytes, antioxidants and pigments were correlated with SbPIP2-overexpressing (SbPIP2-OE) plants treated with salinity and water deficit stress, suggesting their involvement in stress tolerance. As aquaporins are also involved in CO2 transport, SbPIP2-OE plants showed enhanced photosynthesis performance than wild type upon salinity and drought stresses. Photosynthetic gas exchange (net CO2 assimilation rate, PSII efficiency, ETR, and non-photochemical quenching) were significantly higher in SbPIP2-OE plants compared to control plants (wild type and vector control plants) under both unstressed and stressed conditions. The higher quantum yield for reduction of end electron acceptors at the PSI acceptor side [Φ( R0 )] in SbPIP2-OE plants compared to control plants under abiotic stresses indicates a continued PSI functioning, leading to retained electron transport rate, higher carbon assimilation, and less ROS-mediated injuries. In conclusion, the SbPIP2 gene functionally validated in the present study could be a potential candidate for engineering abiotic stress resilience in important crops.

In aquaculture, oxolinic acid (OA) is used as a second-line treatment at 12 mg/kg biomass/day for seven consecutive days. The present study evaluated the biosafety of 21 days of dietary administration of OA at 0, 12, 36, 60 and 120 mg by assessing the growth, biochemical, erythrocytic morphological and histopathological alterations and residue levels in Oreochromis niloticus. A significant dose-dependent reduction in feed intake and biomass and an increase in mortalities and erythrocytic cellular and nuclear changes were recorded. Significant elevations in plasma glucose, creatinine, alkaline phosphatase, alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase and a decline in calcium and chloride levels were documented. The kidney, liver and intestine histoarchitecture showed mild to marked alterations. The edible tissue OA residues peaked on day 21 and decreased upon cessation of administration in all the dosing groups. The residue levels in the muscle of the recommended dose group were well within the maximum residue limit set by the European Medicines Evaluation Agency. Although the current study hinted at the safety and tolerability of OA even during long-term usage in O. niloticus in Indian conditions, care must be exercised for its aquacultural application because of its listing as a critically important medicine for humans.

The frequency and severity of extreme climatic conditions such as drought, salinity, cold, and heat are increasing due to climate change. Moreover, in the field, plants are affected by multiple abiotic stresses simultaneously or sequentially. Thus, it is imperative to compare the effects of stress combinations on crop plants relative to individual stresses. This study investigated the differential regulation of physio-biochemical and metabolomics parameters in peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) under individual (salt, drought, cold, and heat) and combined stress treatments using multivariate correlation analysis. The results showed that combined heat, salt, and drought stress compounds the stress effect of individual stresses. Combined stresses that included heat had the highest electrolyte leakage and lowest relative water content. Lipid peroxidation and chlorophyll contents did not significantly change under combined stresses. Biochemical parameters, such as free amino acids, polyphenol, starch, and sugars, significantly changed under combined stresses compared to individual stresses. Free amino acids increased under combined stresses that included heat; starch, sugars, and polyphenols increased under combined stresses that included drought; proline concentration increased under combined stresses that included salt. Metabolomics data that were obtained under different individual and combined stresses can be used to identify molecular phenotypes that are involved in the acclimation response of plants under changing abiotic stress conditions. Peanut metabolomics identified 160 metabolites, including amino acids, sugars, sugar alcohols, organic acids, fatty acids, sugar acids, and other organic compounds. Pathway enrichment analysis revealed that abiotic stresses significantly affected amino acid, amino sugar, and sugar metabolism. The stress treatments affected the metabolites that were associated with the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) and urea cycles and associated amino acid biosynthesis pathway intermediates. Principal component analysis (PCA), partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), and heatmap analysis identified potential marker metabolites (pinitol, malic acid, and xylopyranose) that were associated with abiotic stress combinations, which could be used in breeding efforts to develop peanut cultivars that are resilient to climate change. The study will also facilitate researchers to explore different stress indicators to identify resistant cultivars for future crop improvement programs.

Water is a vital resource for plants to grow, thrive, and complete their life cycle. In recent years, drastic changes in the climate, especially drought frequency and severity, have increased, which reduces agricultural productivity worldwide. Aquaporins are membrane channels belonging to the major intrinsic protein superfamily, which play an essential role in cellular water and osmotic homeostasis of plants under both control and water deficit conditions. A genome-wide search reveals the vast availability of aquaporin isoforms, phylogenetic relationships, different families, conserved residues, chromosomal locations, and gene structure of aquaporins. Furthermore, aquaporins gating and subcellular trafficking are commonly controlled by phosphorylation, cytosolic pH, divalent cations, reactive oxygen species, and stoichiometry. Researchers have identified their involvement in regulating hydraulic conductance, root system architecture, modulation of abiotic stress-related genes, seed viability and germination, phloem loading, xylem water exit, photosynthetic parameters, and post-drought recovery. Remarkable effects following the change in aquaporin activity and/or gene expression have been observed on root water transport properties, nutrient acquisition, physiology, transpiration, stomatal aperture, gas exchange, and water use efficiency. The present review highlights the role of different aquaporin homologs under water-deficit stress condition in model and crop plants. Moreover, the opportunity and challenges encountered to explore aquaporins for engineering drought-tolerant crop plants are also discussed here.

A potent cold and drought regulatory-protein encoding gene, SbCDR was cloned from an extreme halophyte Salicornia brachiata. In vitro localisation study, performed with SbCDR::RFP gene-construct revealed that SbCDR is a membrane protein. Overexpression of the SbCDR gene in tobacco plants confirmed tolerance against major environmental constraints such as salinity, drought and cold, as evidenced by improved chlorophyll contents, plant morphology, plant biomass, root length, shoot length and seed germination efficiency. Transgenic lines also exhibited high accumulation of proline, total sugar, reducing sugar, free amino acid and polyphenol, besides the low level of malondialdehyde (MDA) contents. SbCDR transgenic lines showed better relative water contents, membrane stability index and osmotic water potential. Furthermore, higher expression of ROS scavenging genes was observed in transgenic lines under stress. Moreover, microarray analysis revealed that several host genes were upregulated and downregulated under drought and salt stress conditions in SbCDR transgenic line compared with control (WT) plants. The results demonstrated that the overexpression of the halophytic SbCDR gene has intense effects on the abiotic stress tolerance of transgenic tobacco plants. However, the exact mode of action of SbCDR in multiple abiotic stress tolerance of plants is yet to be unveiled. It is believed that the precise role of SbCDR gene will provide additional information to comprehend the abiotic stress tolerance mechanism. Furthermore, it will appear as a promising candidate gene for improving stress tolerance in different crop plants for sustainable agriculture and crop productivity.

Ethambutol is a first-line chemotherapeutic agent, which is commonly used in combination with other drugs for the treatment of tuberculosis. Ethambutol-induced optic neuritis is a serious and rare side effect that is either dose or duration-related and causes progressive painless vision loss, and cecocentral scotomas in the visual field. A rare case of ethambutol-induced optic neuritis was reported in a 52-year-old female who was taking anti-tubercular treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis for five months. She presented with painless diminished vision in both eyes. The patient was diagnosed with a rare case of optic neuritis through various examination methods. Ethambutol was stopped and therapy was continued with oral prednisone, zinc, and vitamin B complex being started along with anti-TB treatment. She showed no marked improvement in visual parameters until the last follow-up. The patient died due to cardiopulmonary arrest as a consequence of pulmonary tuberculosis.

Objective This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of materiovigilance among healthcare professionals (HCPs) at a tertiary care teaching hospital in South Gujarat, India. Specifically, it sought to identify gaps in current understanding and reporting practices related to adverse events associated with medical devices. Introduction Materiovigilance, the systematic monitoring and assessment of adverse events related to medical devices, is crucial for ensuring patient safety and enhancing device performance. In India, the Materiovigilance Programme of India (MvPI) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare oversees the safe use of medical devices, integrating them with the pharmacovigilance framework. Despite these efforts, challenges persist in awareness, reporting practices, and the integration of materiovigilance among healthcare professionals. The knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of these professionals are pivotal for effective adverse event reporting, but underreporting due to a lack of awareness, inadequate training, and perceived administrative burden remains a significant barrier. The study underscores the importance of training programs, improving reporting infrastructure, and fostering a safety culture within healthcare institutions to enhance the effectiveness of materiovigilance in India. Methodology An observational, cross-sectional study was conducted using a questionnaire-based approach. A total of 215 HCPs, including consultant doctors, resident doctors, and nursing staff, participated in the study. The questionnaire covered aspects of knowledge regarding the Materiovigilance Programme of India (MvPI), classification of medical devices, attitudes towards adverse event reporting, and actual reporting practices. Data collection was carried out electronically over the course of one month using Google Forms (Google LLC, Mountain View, California, United States). Results Among the participants, 135 (62.79%) correctly identified MvPI as the program for monitoring adverse events caused by medical devices. A majority of 188 (87.44%) understood that medical devices in India are classified based on a risk-based approach. Positive attitudes towards reporting adverse events were prevalent, with 202 (93.95%) acknowledging the potential for adverse events from medical devices and agreeing on the importance of reporting. However, a significant gap was noted between noticing adverse events (138 participants, 64.19%) and actual reporting (60 participants, 27.91%), indicating a need for improved reporting practices. Only 104 participants (48.37%) had participated in workshops or continuing medical education (CME) sessions on medical device safety. Conclusion The study reveals a strong foundation of knowledge and positive attitudes towards the materiovigilance among HCPs in South Gujarat. However, there is a notable discrepancy between awareness and actual reporting practices. To enhance the effectiveness of materiovigilance, interventions such as targeted educational programs and simplification of reporting procedures are recommended. These efforts are essential to ensure timely detection, reporting, and management of adverse events related to medical devices, thereby enhancing patient safety and overall healthcare quality.

Background and objective Infectious diseases pose a substantial global health challenge, especially in developing countries where healthcare accessibility is limited. Pharmaceutical expenses constitute a significant share of out-of-pocket expenditure (60-90%). Hence, the affordability of medications becomes a critical determinant for patient compliance. This study focuses on the economic dynamics of antimicrobial agents. Methodology After collecting data from the Current Index of Medical Specialties (CIMS), different antimicrobial agents (AMAs) were assessed based on their cost per 10 tablets/10 capsules/one vial of injection. A comprehensive analysis was performed to assess the minimum and maximum costs for each medication across diverse pharmaceutical companies. Cost variation was assessed through both the cost ratio and percentage cost variation. The data were analyzed and represented using descriptive statistics Results Our findings indicate significant cost variations, with nitrofurantoin 100 mg tablet showcasing a staggering 1498.5% variation, followed by meropenem 500 mg vial at 473.91%. Conversely, the cotrimoxazole (sulfamethoxazole 800 mg + trimethoprim 160 mg) tablet exhibits a minimal 6.05% variation, underscoring the diversity in pricing strategies. The number of brands ranged from two to 62. Conclusions This study underscores the importance of considering cost variations in antimicrobial agents while prescribing the same. Doing so will not only address the economic challenges faced by patients but also help in improving compliance and reducing the risk of antimicrobial drug resistance. This approach advocates for a more economically sustainable and patient-centric healthcare ecosystem in India.

AIM: To study the use of medial sural artery perforator (MSAP) free flap in head and neck reconstruction. MATERIAL AND METHOD: This was a prospective study. The patients with cancers of head and neck underwent excision of tumor along with neck dissection, and MSAP free flap was used for reconstruction. RESULTS: The free MSAP flaps were used in 30 patients to reconstruct head and neck soft tissue defects. There were sixteen male and six female patients with the median age of 40 years. The most common site of tumor resection was the tongue (14 cases), followed by buccal mucosa (12 cases), neck skin(2 cases), skin over parotid(1 case) and lip(1 case). Average flap size was 56 cm2. Thickness of the flap ranged from 4 to 8 mm. The length of the vascular pedicle ranged from 8 to 14 cm (12 cm mean) which provides sufficient length during vessel anastomosis. Arterial diameter ranged from 1.0 to 1.5 mm(Average - 1.25 mm) and venous diameter of both veins in pedicle ranged from 1.5 to 2.5 mm(Average - 2 mm) in size. Most flaps were based on two perforators. Primary closure was attained in 11 cases whereas 19 patients required split thickness skin graft(STSG). The average flap harvesting time was 45 min. Flap was failed in two cases. CONCLUSION: MSAP is good alternative to FRAFF in the reconstruction of defect after resection of head and neck cancer.

Through and through complex oro-mandibular defect usually involves buccal mucosa, mandibular segment, lip, and outer cheek skin. Reconstruction of such extensive three-dimensional defects pose a great challenge to reconstructive surgeons which requires use of two flaps. There are diverse options for such types of defects like use two pedicled flaps, one free flap, one pedicled flap or use of two free flaps. Amongst them the use of dual free flaps is ideal for the reconstruction. Commonly used dual free flaps are free fibula osteocutaneous flap for mandible, buccal mucosal defect and free radial artery flap or antero-lateral flap for cheek defect. The major disadvantages of using these two free flaps include two different sites for flap harvest, more time for harvesting and increased overall surgery time. We present our experience of reconstruction of large oro-mandibular defect using free osteo-cutaneous fibula flap and lateral sural artery free flap from single limb in six patients between January 2019 and December 2020. Minimum follow up was 6 months.

Foods enriched with nutritional compounds and biological activities, especially antioxidants, are considered healthier for human and/or animal consumption. Seaweeds are rich sources of biologically active metabolites and are used as functional foods. In this study, proximate compositions, physicobiochemical characteristics and oil oxidative stability were analyzed for 15 abundant tropical seaweeds (four green-Acrosiphonia orientalis, Caulerpa scalpelliformis, Ulva fasciata, Ulva lactuca; six brown-Iyengaria stellata, Lobophora variegate, Padina boergesenii, Sargassum linearifolium, Spatoglossum asperum, Stoechospermum marginatum; and five red-Amphiroa anceps, Grateloupia indica, Halymenia porphyriformis, Scinaia carnosa, Solieria chordalis). All seaweeds were analyzed for the proximate composition, including moisture content, ash content, total sugar content, total proteins, total lipids, crude fiber, carotenoid content, total chlorophyll content, proline, iodine content, nitrogen-free extract, total phenolic content and total flavonoid content. Green seaweeds showed higher nutritional proximate composition, followed by brown and red seaweeds. Among the different seaweeds, Ulva, Caulerpa, Sargassum, Spatoglossum and Amphiroa showed high nutritional proximate composition compared to other seaweeds. High cation scavenging, free radical scavenging and total reducing activities were observed for Acrosiphonia, Caulerpa, Ulva, Sargassum, Spatoglossum and Iyengaria. It was also observed that 15 tropical seaweeds contained negligible amounts of antinutritional compounds, including tannic acid, phytic acid, saponins, alkaloids and terpenoids. Nutritionally, green and brown seaweeds provided higher sources of energy (150-300 calories per 100 g) compared to red seaweeds (80-165 calories per 100 g). Additionally, this study also confirmed that tropical seaweeds improved the oxidative stability of food oils and, therefore, might be recommended as natural antioxidant additives. The overall results confirm that tropical seaweeds are potential sources of nutrition and antioxidants and may be explored as functional food, dietary supplementation or animal feed. Additionally, they may also be explored as food supplements for fortifying food products, as food toppings or for garnishing and seasoning foods. However, a human or animal toxicity analysis is required before any conclusive recommendation for daily food or feed intake can be made.

Extensive composite defects involving the lip and cheek present difficult reconstructive challenges in view of functional recovery like oral competence, articulation, speech and mastication. This study presents our results of reconstructing through and through cheek defect with the use of free anterolateral thigh (ALT) flaps. All the patients with carcinoma of buccal mucosa and cheek who underwent through and through cheek resection and reconstructed with free composite pedalled anterolateral thigh flap between March 2019 to March 2020 were included in the study. We have assessed the post-operative functional outcome using University of Washington Quality of Life Questionnaire at the end of 12 months duration. We have excluded lost to follow-up and flap failure patients. Fifty patients were matched our inclusion criteria. Mean age was 43 years. Male to female ratio was 4.6:1. Stage 3 disease was in 8 patients and stage 4 disease was in 42 patients. Average size of the flap required was 15 × 7.5 cm, maximum was 24 × 11 cm. Oral competence was good in 74% patients. 80% patients were able to take semisolid diet, 8% were on liquid diet and 12% were dependent on RT feed. Average physical function (70.47 ± 19.09), social-emotional sub-score (81.72 ± 16.63) and composite scores (76.09 ± 17.86) were good and within acceptable range. Chewing (53 ± 29.29) and swallowing (64 ± 21.57) scored poorly among 12 domains. For extensive through and through cheek defects bipedelled ALT provides good functional outcome. In view of advance disease status extensive resection would be responsible for bone and mucosal loss affecting chewing and swallowing. T1 mapping is becoming a staple magnetic resonance imaging method for diagnosing myocardial diseases such as ischemic cardiomyopathy, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, myocarditis, and more. Clinically, most T1 mapping sequences acquire a single slice at a single cardiac phase across a 10 to 15-heartbeat breath-hold, with one to three slices acquired in total. This leaves opportunities for improving patient comfort and information density by acquiring data across multiple cardiac phases in free-running acquisitions and across multiple respiratory phases in free-breathing acquisitions. Scanning in the presence of cardiac and respiratory motion requires more complex motion characterization and compensation. Most clinical mapping sequences use 2D single-slice acquisitions; however newer techniques allow for motion-compensated reconstructions in three dimensions and beyond. To further address confounding factors and improve measurement accuracy, T1 maps can be acquired jointly with other quantitative parameters such as T2, T2∗, fat fraction, and more. These multiparametric acquisitions allow for constrained reconstruction approaches that isolate contributions to T1 from other motion and relaxation mechanisms. In this review, we examine the state of the literature in motion-corrected and motion-resolved T1 mapping, with potential future directions for further technical development and clinical translation.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have reported that lateral hinge fracture (LHF) has a negative effect on bone healing at the osteotomy site after medial closing wedge distal femoral osteotomy (MCDFO). However, limited evidence exists in the literature regarding the predictive factors for LHF in MCDFO. HYPOTHESIS: A large medial closing gap and a lateral hinge position in the supracondylar area would increase plain radiography-based and/or computed tomography (CT)-based LHF in MCDFO. STUDY DESIGN: Case control study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 67 knees of 53 patients (mean age, 37.4 ± 16.9 years) who underwent MCDFO between May 2009 and June 2021. The surgical indications for MCDFO were genu valgum deformity combined with either lateral compartment osteoarthritis or recurrent patellar dislocation. The presence of LHF was evaluated based on immediate postoperative plain radiography and CT scans. The predictive factors for LHF in MCDFO were investigated using multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: LHFs were identified in 21 knees (31.3%) through plain radiography and in 40 knees (59.7%) through CT. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the medial closing gap and lateral hinge position were predictive factors for plain radiography- and CT-based LHF after MCDFO. Controlling for other variables, we found that an increase in the medial opening gap by 1 mm increased the likelihood of plain radiography-based LHF by a factor of 1.805 (95% CI, 1.291-2.525; P = .001) and CT-based LHF by 1.333 (95% CI, 1.003-1.772; P = .048). Moreover, a lateral hinge position in the supracondylar area increased the likelihood of plain radiography-based LHF by a factor of 9.870 (95% CI, 2.179-44.720; P = .003) and CT-based LHF by 5.686 (95% CI, 1.124-28.754; P = .036). CONCLUSION: A large medial closing gap and lateral hinge position in the supracondylar area are associated with LHF in MCDFO. Care should be taken to prevent LHF in MCDFO with a large medial closing gap. Moreover, a lateral hinge position in the supracondylar area should be avoided to decrease the incidence of LHF in MCDFO.

RESUMO

We propose a method to predict when a woman will develop breast cancer (BCa) from her lifestyle and health history features. To address this objective, we use data from the Alberta's Tomorrow Project of 18,288 women to train Individual Survival Distribution (ISD) models to predict an individual's Breast-Cancer-Onset (BCaO) probability curve. We show that our three-step approach-(1) filling missing data with multiple imputations by chained equations, followed by (2) feature selection with the multivariate Cox method, and finally, (3) using MTLR to learn an ISD model-produced the model with the smallest L1-Hinge loss among all calibrated models with comparable C-index. We also identified 7 actionable lifestyle features that a woman can modify and illustrate how this model can predict the quantitative effects of those changes-suggesting how much each will potentially extend her BCa-free time. We anticipate this approach could be used to identify appropriate interventions for individuals with a higher likelihood of developing BCa in their lifetime.

Biofilms are bacterial communities encased in a rigid yet dynamic extracellular matrix. The sociobiology of bacterial communities within a biofilm is astonishing, with environmental factors playing a crucial role in determining the switch from planktonic to a sessile form of life. The mechanism of biofilm biogenesis is an intriguingly complex phenomenon governed by the tight regulation of expression of various biofilm-matrix components. One of the major constituents of the biofilm matrix is proteinaceous polymers called amyloids. Since the discovery, the significance of biofilm-associated amyloids in adhesion, aggregation, protection, and infection development has been much appreciated. The amyloid expression and assembly is regulated spatio-temporarily within the bacterial cells to perform a diverse function. This review provides a comprehensive account of the genetic regulation associated with the expression of amyloids in bacteria. The stringent control ensures optimal utilization of amyloid scaffold during biofilm biogenesis. We conclude the review by summarizing environmental factors influencing the expression and regulation of amyloids.

PURPOSE: To assess the prevalence of post-COVID symptoms in patients with recovered COVID-19 (nasopharyngeal RT PCR negative) who were discharged from an acute COVID care facility at a tertiary care teaching hospital in North India. METHODS: This study was an observational study with retrospective data collection, conducted in the COVID follow-up clinic, a combined clinic of medicine and endocrinology. Patients discharged from the acute COVID care facility were recruited after 14 days of discharge if they fulfilled inclusion and exclusion criteria. The retrospective data was collected from the hospital records/EMR and analysed by the SPSSv23. RESULTS: Fifty patients, who fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria, were included in the study. The Mean age of patients was 53.4±13.8 years (range 28-77). Seventy six percent were male, and 38% had type 2 diabetes. Fever (94%), cough (78%) and breathlessness (68%), were the most common symptoms at presentation to acute care facility. Oxygen saturation at presentation had a negative correlation with D-Dimer, age, and C reactive protein. When patients were evaluated clinically, after 14 days (range 15 to 50 days) of the discharge, 82% of patients had at least one persistent symptom. Fatigue (74%) was the most common symptoms in follow-up followed by breathlessness (44%), and muscle weakness (36%). Two patients had persistent fever, even after negative RT PCR status. CONCLUSION: Patients discharged from the acute COVID care facility had a high prevalence of post-COVID symptoms even after 14 days.

(1) Defining a protocol for management of patients with severe temporomandibular joint ankylosis. (2) Review the results of use of GORE-TEX as an interpositional material in gap arthroplasty. All cases which were treated with surgical intervention for severe TMJ Ankylosis with use of GORE-TEX as an interpositional material have been included. Amongst 40 patients, 11 were male and 29 were female with age group ranging from 4 to 36 years. 22 patients had bilateral ankylosis and 18 patients had unilateral ankylosis needing unilateral condylectomy. In all the patients GORE-TEX was used as an inter-positional material to form a pseudo joint. Postoperative mouth opening was around 3 fingers (3-3.5 cm) for period of 2 years i.e. last follow up. Migration or extrusion of implant was not seen in any of our cases. Use of GORE-TEX as an inter-positional material can prevent recurrences with good restoration of the physiological joint and occlusion.

To compare the outcome of type I tympanoplasty with cortical mastoidectomy in chronic otitis media active mucosal disease (wet ear) versus chronic otitis media inactive mucosal disease (dry ear). An observational analytic study was conducted and data collection was done from August 2014 to August 2016. All patients of chronic otitis media with mucosal disease were divided into two groups, one with active disease (group A) and another with inactive disease (group B). The outcome was studied in the form of graft take up rate. Total 103 patients were studied, group A (wet ear) had 67 and group B (dry ear) had 36 patients. Graft take up rate was 94% in wet ear and 100% in dry ear and p value was 0.2. There was no statistically significant difference found between the two groups.
