Endosymbionts live symbiotically with insect hosts and play important roles in the evolution, growth, development, reproduction, and environmental fitness of hosts. Weevils are one of the most abundant insect groups that can be infected by various endosymbionts, such as Sodalis, Nardonella, and Wolbachia. The sweet potato weevil, Cylas formicarius (Coleoptera: Brentidae), is a notorious pest in sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) cultivation. Currently, little is known about the presence of endosymbionts in C. formicarius. Herein, we assessed the endosymbiont load of a single geographic population of C. formicarius. The results showed that Nardonella and Rickettsia could infect C. formicarius at different rates, which also varied according to the developmental stages of C. formicarius. The relative titer of Nardonella was significantly related to C. formicarius developmental stages. The Nardonella-infecting sweet potato weevils were most closely related to the Nardonella in Sphenophorus levis (Coleoptera, Curculionidae). The Rickettsia be identified in bellii group. These results preliminarily revealed the endosymbionts in C. formicarius and helped to explore the diversity of endosymbionts in weevils and uncover the physiological roles of endosymbionts in weevils.

This study was designed to explore whether hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) inhibitor could enhance immunotherapy efficacy in prostate cancer. Western blot was used to detect the expression of HIF-1α in the tumor and peritumor tissues from prostate cancer patients. The analysis from Cancer Genome Atlas database was used to show an association between HIF-1α expression and survival rate in prostate cancer patients. Murine prostate cell-derived xenograft (CDX) model was set up in both nude mice and BALB/c mice to observe the therapeutic effect of HIF-1α inhibitor IDF-11774. Protein expression of HIF-1α, as well as changes in the immune microenvironment, was detected. Moreover, the synergistic antitumor effect of IDF-11774 and PD-1 antibody was detected in another murine prostate cancer model. HIF-1α was found to have higher expression in prostate cancer tumor tissue than in peritumor tissue, and the expression level was negatively correlated with survival rate (P = 0.0157). HIF-1α inhibitor IDF-11774 reduced tumor volume and exhibited better efficacy in BALB/c mouse model (P < 0.0001) with normal immune system, with the same suppression level against HIF-1α. HIF-1α inhibitor reduced CD45+CD11b+Gr-1+ myeloid-derived suppressor cells (P = 0.0027) and CD45+ CD11b+F4/80+CD206hi M2 macrophages (P = 0.0059) but increased the abundance of CD45+CD3+CD8+ T cells (P = 0.0002) and CD45+CD3+CD4+ T cells (P = 0.0001) in tumor-infiltrating immune cells. The same synergistic effect was observed in RM-1 murine prostate CDX tumor model. HIF-1α inhibition augmented the antitumor efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitor PD-1 antibody in murine prostate cancer models, probably through modulating the immunosuppressive microenvironment.

BACKGROUND: Infantile malignant osteopetrosis (IMO) is a rare autosomal recessive disease characterized by a higher bone density in bone marrow caused by the dysfunction of bone resorption. Clinically, IMO can be diagnosed with medical examination, bone mineral density test and whole genome sequencing. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 4-month-old male infant with abnormal skull development, hypocalcemia and premature closure of the cranial sutures. Due to the hyper bone density showed by his radiographic examination, which are characteristic patterns of IMO, we speculated that he might be an IMO patient. In order to confirm this diagnosis, a high-precision whole exome sequencing of the infant and his parents was performed. The analysis of high-precision whole exome sequencing results lead to the identification of two novel heterozygous mutations c.504-1G > C (a splicing site mutation) and c.1371delC (p.G458Afs*70, a frameshift mutation) in gene TCIRG1 derived from his parents. Therefore, we propose that there is a close association between these two mutations and the onset of IMO. CONCLUSIONS: To date, these two novel mutations in gene TCIRG1 have not been reported in the reference gene database of Chinese population. These variants have likewise not been reported outside of China in the Genome Aggregation Database (gnomAD). Our case suggests that the use of whole exome sequencing to detect these two mutations will improve the identification and early diagnosis of IMO, and more specifically, the identification of homozygous individuals with TCIRG1 gene mutation. We propose that these mutations in gene TCIRG1 could be a novel therapeutic target for the IMO in the future.

Earlier electroencephalographic studies have compared attractive and unattractive faces and between faces with other objects, such as flowers, without revealing if a recognition memory bias toward faces and flowers exists or whether humans exhibit enhanced specific components toward all attractive objects or only toward attractive faces. For objects with similar degrees of attractiveness, we sought to determine if the N170, P1, and N250 reflect upon the attractiveness of faces and flowers and demonstrated by comparing event-related potentials of humans' different perceptual mechanisms recognizing high attractive faces and high attractive flowers. The repeated high attractive faces tended to elicit a larger N170. Simultaneously, the P1 was preferentially associated with the repeated high attractive flowers, but both indicated that the repetitive enhancement effect only occurred on repeated attractive faces. Thus, differences existed in the perceptual mechanisms for processing repeated high attractive faces and repeated high attractive flowers. However, there was no significant difference in N250 between repeated faces and repeated flowers or between high attractive faces and high attractive flowers. Consequently, high attractive faces and high attractive flowers capture the beholder's memory bias in different processing stages. The N170 and P1 components are affected by attractiveness, thereby demonstrating the differences between human perceptual mechanisms in recognizing high attractive faces and objects.

Cell plasma membrane proteins, playing a crucial role in cell malignant transformation and development, were the main targets of tumor detection and therapy. In this study, CyDye/biotin double-labeling proteomic approach was adopted to profile the membrane proteome of gastric cancer cell line BGC-823 and paired immortalized gastric epithelial cell GES-1. Real-time PCR, Western blotting, and immunohistochemical staining were used to validate the differential expression of a novel identified cell surface marker R-cadherin in gastric cancer cells and tissues. Clinicopathological study and survival analysis were performed to estimate its roles in tumor progression and outcome prediction. Real-time PCR and Western blotting showed that the expression level of R-cadherin in gastric cancer were significantly lower than non-cancerous epithelial cell and tissues. Clinicopathological study indicated that R-cadherin was dominantly expressed on cell surface of normal gastric epithelium, and its expression deletion in gastric cancer tissues was associated with tumor site, differentiation, lymph node metastasis, and pTNM (chi-square test, P < 0.05). Those patients with R-cadherin positive expression displayed better overall survivals than negative expression group (log-rank test, P = 0.000). Cox multivariate survival analysis revealed lacking the expression of R-cadherin was a main independent predictor for poor clinical outcome in gastric cancer (RR = 5.680, 95 % CI 2.250-14.341, P < 0.01). We have established a fundamental membrane proteome database for gastric cancer and identified R-cadherin as a tumor differentiation and progression-related cell surface marker of gastric cancer. Lacking the expression of R-cadherin indicates poor prognosis in patients with gastric cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Placental mRNA can now be detected in maternal whole blood, raising the possibility of using maternal blood for noninvasive prenatal diagnosis (NIPD) of trisomy 21. We aimed to identify new mRNA-single nucleotide polymorphism (mRNA-SNP) markers suitable for use in reverse-transcriptase multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (RT-MLPA) to develop a more reliable diagnostic method for trisomy 21 in Chinese subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using sequencing, we determined the status of SNPs in genes expressed in the placenta and calculated their heterozygote frequencies to determine which loci were suitable for use in RT-MLPA. Cell-free fetal RNA was extracted from peripheral blood samples of 246 women at 12-24 weeks of pregnancy, and the SNP loci selected were analyzed by RT-MLPA, followed by capillary electrophoresis. Karyotype analyses were used to confirm the diagnosis of trisomy 21. RESULTS: As compared with karyotype analysis, the diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of RT-MLPA were excellent (95 and 100% in different gestational weeks). CONCLUSION: The RT-MLPA technique is a suitable and reliable method for the diagnosis of trisomy 21. Use of RT-MLPA with the SNP markers described here shows good specificity, high sensitivity, and high throughput potential, making this technique suitable for NIPD in clinical practice.

The sweet potato weevil Cylas formicarius is a notorious underground pest in sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.). However, little is known about the effects of cadmium (Cd) stress on weevil biology and resistance to pesticides and biotic agents. Therefore, we fed sweet potato weevils with Cd-contaminated sweet potato and assessed adult food intake and survival and larval developmental duration and mortality rates, as well as resistance to the insecticide spinetoram and susceptibility to the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana. With increasing Cd concentration, the number of adult weevil feeding holes, adult survival and life span, and larval developmental duration decreased significantly, whereas larval mortality rates increased significantly. However, at the lowest Cd concentration (30 mg/L), adult feeding was stimulated. Resistance of adult sweet potato weevils to spinetoram increased at low Cd concentration, whereas Cd contamination did not affect sensitivity to B. bassiana. Thus, Cd contamination affected sweet potato weevil biology and resistance, and further studies will investigate weevil Cd accumulation and detoxification mechanisms.

Bacterial endosymbionts play important roles in the life histories of herbivorous insects by impacting their development, survival, reproduction, and stress tolerance. How endosymbionts may affect the interactions between plants and insect herbivores is still largely unclear. Here, we show that endosymbiotic Rickettsia belli can provide mutual benefits also outside of their hosts when the sap-sucking whitefly Bemisia tabaci transmits them to plants. This transmission facilitates the spread of Rickettsia but is shown to also enhance the performance of the whitefly and co-infesting caterpillars. In contrast, Rickettsia infection enhanced plant resistance to several pathogens. Inside the plants, Rickettsia triggers the expression of salicylic acid-related genes and the two pathogen-resistance genes TGA 2.1 and VRP, whereas they repressed genes of the jasmonic acid pathway. Performance experiments using wild type and mutant tomato plants confirmed that Rickettsia enhances the plants' suitability for insect herbivores but makes them more resistant to fungal and viral pathogens. Our results imply that endosymbiotic Rickettsia of phloem-feeding insects affects plant defenses in a manner that facilitates their spread and transmission. This novel insight into how insects can exploit endosymbionts to manipulate plant defenses also opens possibilities to interfere with their ability to do so as a crop protection strategy. IMPORTANCE: Most insects are associated with symbiotic bacteria in nature. These symbionts play important roles in the life histories of herbivorous insects by impacting their development, survival, reproduction as well as stress tolerance. Rickettsia is one important symbiont to the agricultural pest whitefly Bemisia tabaci. Here, for the first time, we revealed that the persistence of Rickettsia symbionts in tomato leaves significantly changed the defense pattern of tomato plants. These changes benefit both sap-feeding and leaf-chewing herbivore insects, such as increasing the fecundity of whitefly adults, enhancing the growth and development of the noctuid Spodoptera litura, but reducing the pathogenicity of Verticillium fungi and TYLCV virus to tomato plants distinctively. Our study unraveled a new horizon for the multiple interaction theories among plant-insect-bacterial symbionts.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the frequency of EML4-ALK fusion gene in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, and its correlation with clinicopathologic features. METHODS: Real-time PCR was used to detect the presence of EML4-ALK fusion gene in 268 cases of NSCLCs using paraffin-embedded tissue samples(among which 164 samples were re-validated by Sanger sequencing). Related clinicopathological correlation was analyzed. RESULTS: EML4-ALK fusion gene was found in 4.1% (11/268) of the cases. One hundred and sixty four samples were verified by Sanger sequencing, and the overall coincidence of the results of two methods (Sanger sequencing and Real-time PCR) was 100%. Female patients (5.9%, 5/85), ≤ 60 years of age (4.3%, 6/140), non-smokers (6.8%, 8/118) and adenocarcinomas (7.6%, 10/132) had a higher mutation rate than that in male patients (3.3%, 6/183), > 60 years of age (4.0%, 5/124), smokers (1.6%, 2/132) and squamous cell carcinomas (1.3%, 1/79), although no statistical significance in age (P = 0.918), gender (P = 0.503), smoking history (P = 0.092) and histological type (P = 0.094). CONCLUSIONS: Chinese NSCLC patients have a 4.1% detection rate of EML4-ALK fusion gene in the tumor tissues. Female, non-smoker and adenocarcinoma histological subtype tend to be associated with a higher rate of EML4-ALK gene fusion.

The whitefly, Bemisia tabaci, is a destructive and invasive pest of many horticultural plants including poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima). Outbreaks of B. tabaci cause serious damage by direct feeding on phloem sap, and spreading 100+ plant viruses to crops. Bemisia tabaci were observed more frequently on green than red poinsettia leaves, and the factors responsible for this are unknown. Here, we investigated the development rate, survivorship, fecundity of B. tabaci feeding on green versus red leaves, as well as the leaves' volatiles, trichome density, anthocyanin content, soluble sugars, and free amino acids. Compared to red leaves, B. tabaci on green leaves showed increased fecundity, a higher female sex ratio, and survival rate. The green color alone was more attractive to B. tabaci than red. Red leaves of poinsettia contained more phenol, and panaginsene in their volatiles. Alpha-copaene and caryophyllene were more abundant in the volatiles of poinsettia green leaves. Leaf trichome density, soluble sugars and free amino acids were higher in green than red leaves of poinsettia, anthocyanin was lower in green than red leaves. Overall, green leaves of poinsettia were more susceptible and attractive to B. tabaci. The morphological and chemical variation between red and green leaves also differed; further investigation may reveal how these traits affect B. tabaci's responses.

Inhibition of immunocyte infiltration and activation has been suggested to effectively ameliorate nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Paired immunoglobulin-like receptor B (PirB) and its human ortholog receptor, leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptor B (LILRB2), are immune-inhibitory receptors. However, their role in NASH pathogenesis is still unclear. Here, we demonstrate that PirB/LILRB2 regulates the migration of macrophages during NASH by binding with its ligand angiopoietin-like protein 8 (ANGPTL8). Hepatocyte-specific ANGPTL8 knockout reduces MDM infiltration and resolves lipid accumulation and fibrosis progression in the livers of NASH mice. In addition, PirB-/- bone marrow (BM) chimeras abrogate ANGPTL8-induced MDM migration to the liver. And yet, PirB ectodomain protein could ameliorate NASH by sequestering ANGPTL8. Furthermore, LILRB2-ANGPTL8 binding-promoted MDM migration and inflammatory activation are also observed in human peripheral blood monocytes. Taken together, our findings reveal the role of PirB/LILRB2 in NASH pathogenesis and identify PirB/LILRB2-ANGPTL8 signaling as a potential target for the management or treatment of NASH.

Background: Salbutamol bronchodilator response (BDR) test and fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) have been recommended for the diagnosis of asthma in children, but FeNO levels is affected by many factors. Nonetheless, data of the effect on the FeNO values throughout the bronchodilator test and the differences in FeNO values between BDR positive (BDR+) and negative (BDR-) children with asthma are still limited. We aimed to evaluate the effect of the BDR test on FeNO and the differences in FeNO levels between BDR+ and BDR- children with asthma. Methods: This was a prospective, observational study performed over a 5-month period (December 2018 to April 2019) and involved 57 children with asthma. The FeNO levels at pre-spirometry, post-spirometry, and post-salbutamol BDR testing were estimated. Finally, the children were divided into two groups i.e., BDR+ and BDR-, and differences in the FeNO levels were compared between the two groups. Results: The spirometry results were normal in 2 patients (3.5%). There were 53 (93%) patients with obstructive lung disease, including 40 (70.2%), 11 (19.3%), and 2 (3.5%) patients with mild, moderate, and severe obstruction, respectively. The remaining two patients had mixed lesions (3.5%), none of which were restrictive. The baseline median FeNO levels were significantly higher in the BDR+ group than in the BDR- group [33.00 (23.78, 46.73) vs. 23.00 (9.80, 37.80), (P=0.048)]. Following spirometry, there was a statistically significant decrease in median FeNO levels from baseline to post-spirometry (P=0.002). However, there was no significant difference between the median FeNO levels at baseline and following the BDR test (P=0.976). The impact of spirometry on FeNO was not statistically different in BDR+ versus BDR- children (Z=-0.186, P=0.853); however, the impact of bronchodilators on FeNO exhibited a statistically significant difference between the two groups (Z=3.160, P=0.002). Conclusions: This study revealed dynamic changes in the FeNO levels during the BDR test. The use of a bronchodilator results in a statistically significant difference in FeNO levels between BDR+ and BDR- children with asthma. Moreover, spirometry leads to a marked decrease in the FeNO levels. Our results will allow clinicians to better interpret FeNO, BDR and pulmonary function outcomes and better develop clinical protocols.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of 5-FU (5-fluorouracil) on enriching cancer stem cells of HCC cell line BEL-7402 and the biological characteristics of enriched cells. METHODS: The enriching concentration of 5-FU was determined by CCK-8 (cell counting kit-8). Flow Cytometry was used to determine the changes in cell cycle and positive expression ratio of surface marker CD56, CD54, EpCAM and CD133. The self-renewal and differentiation of positive cells were tested by colony formation assay, and were compared with the control group. RESULTS: Enriching concentration of 5-FU was determined as 10 µg/ml with 48 h incubation. After enrichment, G0/G1 phase cells increased from 57.50 %+/-0.98% to 68.70%+/-3.41% (P<0.05). Whereas S phase cells decreased from 40.26%+/-4.12% to 31.80%+/-4.15% (P<0.01); G2/M phase cells disappeared in experimental group, and was 5.80%+/-1.87% in control group (P<0.01). The proportion of the cell cycle changed with significant statistical differences. Meanwhile, positive rate of cell surface makers CD56, CD54, EpCAM and CD133 increased from 0.57%+/-0.12%, 8.10%+/-6.79%, 0.3%+/-0.01% and 3.20%+/-0.99% to 4.13%+/-0.06%, 50.08%+/-1.69%, 0.55%+/-0.07% and 10.51%+/-1.13%, respectively. The difference was significant (P<0.05). The colony forming ratio of CD56, CD54, EpCAM and CD133 negative cells and positive cells were 2.11%+/-0.21%, 3.32%+/-0.31%; 0.86%+/-0.101%, 2.40%+/-0.52 %; 7.19%+/-0.56%, 7.73%+/-0.71%; 2.70%+/-0.26%, 5.75%+/-0.81%, respectively, and significant differences were found between (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: 5-fluorouracil enriched the cancer stem cell population in HCC cell line BEL-7402. CD56 and CD54 can be used as important surface markers in research of liver cancer stem cells.

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical outcomes of stage I testis teratoma, including pure teratoma, and to provide information on the treatment options for this disease. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 27 cases of orchiectomy for stage I testis teratoma, excluding epidermoid cyst, and investigated its recurrence associated with treatment methods and clinicopathological factors. RESULTS: Four of the 27 cases relapsed, all in the orchiectomy group and confined to the retroperitoneal region, 3 with and the other 1 without risk factors, but with no death. No recurrence was found in those treated by orchiectomy followed by chemotherapy with bleomycin, etoposide and platinum (BEP). The total rate of recurrence was 15.8%. No severe side effects were observed in the 9 patients undergoing adjuvant BEP chemotherapy. CONCLUSION: Risk factors may increase the recurrence rate of stage I testis teratoma, while postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy can reduce it, including that of pure teratoma, though surveillance policy remains the most popular option after orchiectomy.

The whitefly Bemisia tabaci is a destructive agricultural pest that frequently harbors various species of secondary symbionts including Rickettsia. Previous studies have revealed that the infection of Rickettsia can improve whitefly performance on food plants; however, to date, no evidence has shown, if, and how, Rickettsia manipulates the plant-insect interactions. In the current study, the effects of Rickettsia persistence on the induced plant defenses and the consequent performance of whitefly B. tabaci were investigated. Results revealed that Rickettsia can be transmitted into plants via whitefly feeding and remain alive within the cotton plants for at least 2 weeks. The different expression genes of cotton plants were mostly concentrated in the phytohormone signaling pathways, the marker genes of jasmonic-acid signaling pathway (AOC, AOS, LOX, MYC2) were significantly downregulated, while the marker genes of the salicylic-acid signaling pathway (WRKY70, PR-1) were upregulated. Biological experiments revealed that the fecundity of Rickettsia negative B. tabaci significantly increased when they fed on Rickettsia-persistent cotton plants. Taken together, we provide experimental evidence that the persistence of Rickettsia and its induced defense responses in cotton plants can increase the fitness of whitefly and, by this, Rickettsia may increase its infection and spread within its whitefly host.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection is the main cause of lower respiratory tract infection in children. However, there is no effective treatment for RSV infection. Here, we aimed to identify potential biomarkers to aid in the treatment of RSV infection. Children in the acute and convalescence phases of RSV infection were recruited and proteomic analysis was performed to identify differentially expressed proteins (DEPs). Subsequently, promising candidate proteins were determined by functional enrichment and protein-protein interaction network analysis, and underwent further validation by western blot both in clinical and mouse model samples. Among the 79 DEPs identified in RSV patient samples, 4 proteins (BPGM, TPI1, PRDX2, and CFL1) were confirmed to be significantly upregulated during RSV infection. Functional analysis showed that BPGM and TPI1 were mainly involved in glycolysis, indicating an association between RSV infection and the glycolysis metabolic pathway. Our findings provide insights into the proteomic profile during RSV infection and indicated that BPGM, TPI1, PRDX2, and CFL1 may be potential therapeutic biomarkers or targets for the treatment of RSV infection.

OBJECTIVE: to map out the frequency and types of K-ras gene mutations present in colorectal and lung cancer patients; to evaluate the clinical applicability of a novel real-time double-loop probe PCR using the ADx-K-ras kit, and to compare its performance with the result by using traditional Sanger DNA sequencing in detection of somatic mutations of the tumor genes. METHODS: a total of 827 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) blocks including 583 from the colorectal and 244 from the lung cancer patients were assayed. Genomic DNA of the sample tissues was extracted, purified and subjected to PCR amplification of K-ras gene codon 12 and 13 and DNA sequencing was carried on using both the traditional Sanger sequencing method and the ADx's K-ras mutation detection kit, respectively. The mutation rates for K-ras gene at codon 12 and 13, and the mutation frequencies detected by using both methods were analyzed. RESULTS: 533 out of 583 (91.4%) colorectal cancer samples and 144 out of 244 lung cancer samples (59.0%) were detected using the traditional Sanger DNA sequencing technique, and 583 out of 583 (100.0%) colorectal plus 244 out of 244(100.0%) lung cancers were detected, respectively by using the ADx-K-ras kit. Of the 583 colorectal cancer samples, 192 (32.9%) showed mutations by using the ADx-K-ras kit in comparing with a result of 160 samples (27.4%) with K-ras gene mutation by using the traditional Sanger DNA sequencing technique. Of the 244 lung cancer samples, 26 (10.7%) showed K-ras gene mutations by using ADx-K-ras kit, while in 144 samples detected by using the traditional Sanger DNA sequencing technique, only 12 samples (8.3%) showed K-ras gene mutations. In colorectal cancer analyzed, GGT→GAT at codon 12 was the most common event with 35.1% (66/188) mutations, followed by GGC→GAC at codon 13 with 26.6% (50/188) and GGT→GTT at codon 12 with 18.6% (35/188), while GGT→GCT at codon12 was the most rare with only 1.6% (3/188) of the total mutation cases. In patients with lung cancer analyzed, GGT→GTT at codon 12 was the most common mutation, accounting for 40.9% (9/22), and GGT→GCT at codon 12 the most rare with only about 4.5% (1/22) of the total mutation cases. CONCLUSIONS: K-ras gene mutations were present in colorectal cases, and significantly more frequent than that in lung cancer. There were significant statistical differences between the two methods. ADx-K-ras real-time PCR showed much higher successful detection rates and mutation ratios compared to Sanger sequencing. As a result, the real-time PCR with ADx-K-ras kit proves to have a good clinical applicability and a strong advantage over the traditional Sanger DNA sequencing. It is a effective and reliable tool for clinical screening of somatic gene mutations in tumors.

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about small cell carcinoma of the upper urinary tract (UUT-SCC), the aim of this study is to identify the risk factors in relation to survival of patients with UUT-SCC. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: Literature search on UUT-SCC was performed in databases including MEDLINE, EMBASE, Wangfang, and CNKI. Studies were eligible for inclusion if outcomes of patients with histopathologically confirmed UUT-SCC were reported. The relevant data on clinic, pathology, and therapy were collected. Progress survival was evaluated using the Cox regression model with the robust sandwich estimates of the covariance matrix. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: There were 55 eligible publications identified, contributing 76 patients in total. The median of overall survival (OS) was 14 months. In univariable analyses, pathological stage and platinum-based chemotherapy regimen were associated with OS (pT3-pT4 versus pT1-pT2, HR=3.228, P=0.005; other chemotherapies versus platinum-based, HR=6.249, P=0.035). The median of cancer-specific survival (CSS) was 15 months. In univariable analyses, pathological stage and platinum-based chemotherapy regimen were associated with CCS (pT3-pT4 versus pT1-pT2, HR=3.332, P=0.004; non-platinum based versus platinum-based, HR=7.784, P=0.025). CONCLUSIONS: In multivariable analyses, no variables were associated with OS and CSS. UUT-SCC is a rare tumor characterized by an aggressive clinical course. Pathological stage and platinum-based chemotherapy regimen are the most important factors related to OS and CSS.

To evaluate epidemiology and risk factors of severe adenovirus respiratory infection in hospitalized children in Guangzhou, China.A retrospective review study was conducted, and 542 children hospitalized for adenovirus respiratory infection, were included from January 2011 to December 2014. Patients were younger than 14 years. Disease severity was classified into severe and mild. Laboratory tests and clinical characteristics were analyzed for risk factors of adenovirus respiratory infection by multivariable logistic regression.Among these 542 children, 92.1% were aged < 6 years. Clinical diagnoses were upper respiratory infections in 11.6%, bronchiolitis in 16%, and mild pneumonia in 62.0% of children. Severe pneumonia rate was 10.3% (56/542) with a mortality rate of 0.9% (5/542). The cohort comprised 542 patients; 486 patients with mild adenovirus respiratory infection and 56 patients with severe adenovirus respiratory infection. Multivariable logistic regression was used to confirm associations between variables and adenovirus respiratory infection, after age and gender adjustment. Hospital stay, still significantly associated with adenovirus respiratory infection. Patients with longer hospital stay (odds ratio [OR] = 1.20, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.13-1.28, P < .001), lower LYMPH (OR = 0.73 95% CI: 0.55-0.99, P = .039), and increased LDH (OR = 1.002, 95% CI: 1.001-1.003, P =  .001) had a higher risk of severe adenovirus respiratory infection.Adenovirus is a major pathogen in hospitalized children with respiratory infection. High serum LDH level and low lymphocyte count could be used as predictors of adenovirus respiratory infection severity in children.
