RESUMO

The aim of this study was to estimate the incidence and prevalence of epilepsy in Montenegro over the period 2011-2022 using hospital case records. The main sources for this study were hospital case records in every outpatient and inpatient neurological department in Montenegro, including the Clinical Center of Montenegro in the capital, a primary referral national center for epilepsy. For every patient, aged 18 and above, two neurologists reviewed all data collected to verify the validity of the diagnosis and to establish the date of clinical onset of the disease. Information on age and sex, EEG, CT scan, and MRI were included. Prevalent cases were selected in 2022 population. Incident cases of epilepsy were identified in 2011 and the incidence trend was followed up for the next 12 years. Crude and standardized incidence and prevalence were calculated. Average crude incidence rate of epilepsy for study period was 56.0 per 100,000 individuals (men 58.1; women 54.2). The age-specific incidence was lowest in the 30 s, and early 40 s and highest after 65 years. Over the 12-year period, increasing trend of standardized epilepsy incidence rates was observed for the total population and for females (p = 0.024 and p = 0.020 respectively). The crude overall prevalence of epilepsy on December 31, 2022 was 13.0 per 1000 individuals (men 13.5; women 12.6). The highest prevalence was in patients in their early 20 s and in the seventh decade. In conclusion, the incidence of epilepsy in this study was similar to those of other industrialized countries, with increasing trend during study period. Prevalence was higher compared to European countries.

RESUMO

AIM: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of familial MS (fMS) in Belgrade MS population, discern the differences between the persons with fMS and sporadic MS, and to detect the presence of anticipation phenomenon in fMS patients. METHODS: The data on the demographic and clinical characteristics of MS patients was obtained from the Belgrade MS population Registry. In cases of vertical transmission of MS, the family members were divided into the younger and older generation, in order to assess the potential presence of anticipation phenomenon. To adjust for follow-up time bias, a secondary analysis including only patients who had the onset of symptoms before 39 years (75.percentile), and those who were 39 + years, was performed. RESULTS: The prevalence of fMS in Belgrade MS population is 6.4%. FMS cases had earlier age at MS symptom onset (30.4 vs. 32.3 years) compared to sporadic MS cohort. When comparing fMS cases across generations, the younger generation had significantly lower age at onset compared with the older one (25.8 vs. 35.7 years, p < 0.001). After adjustment for the different length of the follow-up, the difference in age at symptom onset between the groups was reduced, but it still existed and was statistically significant (30.0 years in younger vs. 36.4 years in older generation, p = 0.040). CONCLUSION: In our study, the analysis of fMS cases across generations, showed an earlier age of symptom onset in the younger generation, even after adjustment. These results indicate the possibility of existence of anticipation phenomenon.

RESUMO

Background and Objectives: Despite improvements in screening programs, a large number of patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) are diagnosed in an advanced disease stage. Previous investigations imply that glutathione transferases (GSTs) might be associated with the development and progression of CRC. Moreover, the detoxification mechanism of oxaliplatin, which represents the first line of treatment for advanced CRC, is mediated via certain GSTs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the significance of certain GST genetic variants on CRC prognosis and the efficacy of oxaliplatin-based treatment. Materials and Methods: This prospective study included 523 patients diagnosed with CRC in the period between 2014 and 2016, at the Digestive Surgery Clinic, University Clinical Center of Serbia, Belgrade. Patients were followed for a median of 43.47 ± 17.01 months (minimum 1-63 months). Additionally, 109 patients with advanced disease, after surgical treatment, received FOLFOX6 treatment as a first-line therapy between 2014 and 2020. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to analyze cumulative survival, and the Cox proportional hazard regression model was used to study the effects of different GST genotypes on overall survival. Results: Individuals with the GSTM1-null genotype and the GSTP1 IleVal+ValVal (variant) genotype had significantly shorter survival when compared to referent genotypes (GSTM1-active and GSTP1 IleIle) (log-rank: p = 0.001). Moreover, individuals with the GSTM1-null genotype who received 5-FU-based treatment had statistically significantly shorter survival when compared to individuals with the GSTM1-active genotype (log-rank: p = 0.05). Conclusions: Both GSTM1-null and GSTP1 IleVal+ValVal (variant) genotypes are associated with significantly shorter survival in CRC patients. What is more, the GSTM1-null genotype is associated with shorter survival in patients receiving FOLOFOX6 treatment.

RESUMO

Radiotherapy plays an important role in the multimodal treatment of childhood cancer. Our objective was to provide an analysis of pediatric oncology patients treated with radiotherapy in a national referral institution in Serbia. A retrospective chart review of children treated with radiotherapy between January 2007 and July 2018 was conducted. Of the 806 patients who were identified, 767 formed the basis of this study. CNS tumors (31.2%) were the most common tumors followed by leukemias (17.3%) and bone tumors (14.3%). The most common indication for radiotherapy was in adjuvant setting (69.1%). Anesthesia or sedation was performed on 115 patients. The 5-year and 10-year overall survival rates were 65.7% and 62.1%, respectively. A significant difference in survival in relation to tumor type was seen. The best survival rates were obtained in patients with retinoblastoma, followed by lymphomas and nephroblastoma, while patients with bone sarcomas had the worst survival. The intent of radiotherapy treatment was also a parameter associated with survival. Patients treated with palliative and definitive intent lived shorter than patients treated with prophylactic and adjuvant intent. Our study showed that good treatment outcomes can be achieved in specialized centers with an experienced team of professionals who are dedicated to pediatric oncology.

RESUMO

Corporal punishment (CP) is a widely spread disciplining practice among parents and caregivers globally. Our paper aimed to explore the relationship between the parental attitudes towards CP, expected outcomes of CP, and parenting practices on one hand, with the reported dysfunctions of their children, on the other. Additionally, we aimed to explore the relationship between the use of CP and the reported academic, developmental, and psychological-emotional dysfunctions of their children. The present study involved a nationally representative sample of 1186 parents in Serbia, who had at least one child aged 0-18 years at the moment of interviewing. The parents filled out a series of questionnaires on their attitudes towards CP, expectations of CP outcomes, and their parental practices. Findings indicate that parents that report having a child with dysfunctions have positive attitudes towards CP and expect positive outcomes of CP. These parents also report using more CP as a disciplining method, as well as other harsh disciplining practices. We also identified parental positive expectations of CP, use of physical assault, psychological aggression, neglect as significant predictors of reported child dysfunctions severity. Having all the results in mind, we can assume that children with health-related and school-related issues might be at potential risk of further maltreatment.

RESUMO

There is a gap in understanding specific features of health literacy that might be associated with adherence to influenza immunization. The aim of this study was to examine the association of health literacy with avoidance of influenza immunization and beliefs about the influenza vaccine among people with chronic diseases. Selection of study participants was based on a case-control study design in a population of people with chronic illnesses living in the Foca region (Republic of Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina) and who were entitled to receive a free influenza shot in season 2017/2018. The cases represented all non-vaccinated people (a total of 146) and the controls were vaccinated people (a total of 149) matched according to town of residence. Participants were interviewed in person from April to December 2018 using a socio-demographic questionnaire, Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ) and Health Belief Model Applied to Influenza (HBMAI). Better score on 'Feeling understood and supported by healthcare providers', 'Social support for health' and 'Ability to actively engage with healthcare providers' was associated with more perceived benefits of influenza immunization in men, but not in women. Perceiving more Barriers to influenza immunization was associated with lower scores on 'Feeling understood and supported by healthcare providers', 'Have sufficient information to manage health', 'Social support for health' and 'Ability to actively engage with healthcare providers' in both men and women. Health literacy may be associated with the perception of susceptibility to influenza, benefits and barriers to influenza immunization and motivations to receive influenza vaccine.

We aimed to examine the association between health literacy with missing free influenza immunization. This research focused on people with chronic illnesses living in the Foca region (Republic of Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina) and who were entitled to receive a free influenza shot in season 2017/2018. All non-vaccinated people (cases) and corresponding number vaccinated people (controls) were included. People were interviewed using the socio-demographic questionnaire, Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ) and Health Belief Model Applied to Influenza (HBMAI). Mathematical model suggested potential difference between men and women, so the analyses were performed separately for each gender. People who had better health literacy were not more likely to receive the influenza vaccine. Men who felt better understood and supported by healthcare providers, who had more social support and were actively engaging with healthcare providers were more likely to perceive benefits of influenza immunization. People who felt less understood and supported by healthcare providers, who felt that they did not have sufficient information to manage health and social support and were not actively engaging with healthcare providers were more likely to perceive barriers to influenza immunization. People with chronic diseases should be encouraged to improve their health literacy to better understand influenza immunization.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: to explore the association of health literacy domains with physical and mental quality of life in people with selected chronic diseases. METHODS: Community-dwelling people with selected chronic diseases planned for immunization against influenza in 2017/2018 were included in the study. All non-vaccinated people and the corresponding number of randomly selected vaccinated people matched on town of residence were included. Data were collected by means of socio-demographic questionnaire, Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ) and Short Form-36 (SF-36). The Physical and Mental Composite Scores as well as their domains were observed as the study outcomes. RESULTS: A total of 295 people were studied. The adjusted logistic regression showed that Physical and Mental composite scores were associated with all HLQ domains except 5) Appraisal of health information. Better Physical Functioning was associated with higher scores on 1) Feeling understood and supported by healthcare providers, 6) Ability to actively engage with healthcare providers, 7) Navigating the healthcare system and 8) Ability to find good health information. Better scores on Vitality, Social Functioning, Role Emotional and Mental Health were associated with higher scores on all HLQ domains except 5) Appraisal of health information. CONCLUSION: Health literacy is important for physical and mental quality of life among people with chronic diseases. Health care providers and other stakeholders should continuously work to improve health literacy of their patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cyberbullying is a serious problem among adolescents and has an impact on mental health. The purpose of this study was to: 1) translate and validate the Cyberbullying and Online Aggression Survey in the Serbian language; 2) explore factors associated with more intense cyber victimization and cyber offending and 3) examine whether more intense cyber victimization and cyber offending are associated with a higher likelihood of online search for topics on mental health in a sample of high school students. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of 702 students from 4 public high schools participated in this cross-sectional study. Data were collected using a general questionnaire and the Cyberbullying and Online Aggression Survey. Internal consistency of the questionnaire was examined and confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to assess construct validity. The multiple linear regression model examined factors associated with higher levels of cyber offending and cyber victimization. The multiple logistic regression models examined whether cyber offending and cyber victimizations were associated with searching for mental health topics on the Internet. RESULTS: Cronbach's alpha for the Cyberbullying Victimization Scale was 0.813 and for the Cyberbullying Offending Scale was 0.789. Both scales had a one-factorial structure and parameters on the confirmatory factor analysis were appropriate. More than one-half of students (56.2%) reported ever being cyber victimized and 39.9% of students reported ever being cyber offenders. Having lower grades, being younger at first Internet use and more frequent use of the internet were associated with both higher Cyberbullying Victimization and Offending scores. Having higher scores on both Cyberbullying Victimization and Offending scales was associated with higher odds of searching for mental health topics online. CONCLUSION: It is necessary to address cyberbullying in schools to help recognize and modify the behavior of cyber offenders and provide means of support and empowerment to cyber victims.

RESUMO

The Death Attitude Profile-Revised (DAP-R), one of the most widely used scales for assessing death attitudes is a multidimensional questionnaire capable of measuring a wide range of attitudes towards death. The aim of our study was to assess the reliability and validity of the Serbian version of the DAP-R. The study was conducted in October 2022 and included a total of 547 students of the Faculty of Medicine University of Belgrade (FMUB). Based on Cronbach's alpha coefficient values, our data show good reliability of the DAP-RSp (Serbian version). In our study, the confirmatory factor analysis showed a good fit of the data to the original factor structure with minor discrepancy; compared to the original version (five factors), our analysis yielded one more factor (six factors in total), however, almost all items had factor loading >0.3 on the appropriate scale.

RESUMO

AIM: We recently proposed miR-142-3p as a molecular player in inflammatory synaptopathy, a new pathogenic hallmark of multiple sclerosis (MS) and of its mouse model experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), that leads to neuronal loss independently of demyelination. MiR-142-3p seems to be unique among potential biomarker candidates in MS, since it is an inflammatory miRNA playing a dual role in the immune and central nervous systems. Here, we aimed to verify the impact of miR-142-3p circulating in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of MS patients on clinical parameters, neuronal excitability and its potential interaction with disease modifying therapies (DMTs). METHODS AND RESULTS: In a cohort of 151 MS patients, we found positive correlations between CSF miR-142-3p levels and clinical progression, IL-1ß signalling as well as synaptic excitability measured by transcranial magnetic stimulation. Furthermore, therapy response of patients with 'low miR-142-3p' to dimethyl fumarate (DMF), an established disease-modifying treatment (DMT), was superior to that of patients with 'high miR-142-3p' levels. Accordingly, the EAE clinical course of heterozygous miR-142 mice was ameliorated by peripheral DMF treatment with a greater impact relative to their wild type littermates. In addition, a central protective effect of this drug was observed following intracerebroventricular and ex vivo acute treatments of EAE wild type mice, showing a rescue of miR-142-3p-dependent glutamatergic alterations. By means of electrophysiology, molecular and biochemical analysis, we suggest miR-142-3p as a molecular target of DMF. CONCLUSION: MiR-142-3p is a novel and potential negative prognostic CSF marker of MS and a promising tool for identifying personalised therapies.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to assess the burden and health care use of adult patients with migraine and tension type headache in a post-conflict area of Serbia. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on a representative sample of adults, living in predominantly Serb communities on the Kosovo and Metohija territory. The required data was obtained through a survey, utilizing a culturally-adapted questionnaire. The study sample comprised of 1,062 adults. RESULTS: In the year preceding the study, 49.7% of included subjects suffering from migraines and 27.5% of those experiencing tension type headache sought medical assistance for their condition. The majority (88.5%) of the respondents utilized non steroid antiinfammatory drugs as analgesic, while 14.2% used prophylactic treatment. Migraine sufferers reported losing on average 11.1 days in a 3-month period, while those experiencing tension type headache lost 4.7 days (p < 0.001) due to headaches, preventing them from partaking in professional, family and social activities. On headache-free days, 24.5% of the respondents were anxious or tense in anticipation of a headache onset, while 30% did not feel that the headache had completely resolved. Moreover, 11.5% of the sample reported never or rarely feeling in control of the headache, while 20% of the respondents were of view that their headaches were not taken seriously by their employer and co-workers and rarely discuss them. Adverse effect of headaches on education is more frequently noted by migraine sufferers than those experiencing tension type headache (p = 0.001), and this disparity persists in relation to career (p < 0.001) and family planning (p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: In Kosovo and Metohija, primary headaches exert a profound influence on the affected individuals and their community, and thus require recognition as one of the priorities of social initiatives aimed at the enhancement of public health.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The aim was to determine the extent of sudomotor dysfunction in people with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (pwNMOSD) and to compare findings with a historical cohort of people with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (pwRRMS). METHODS: Forty-eight pwNMOSD were enrolled from four clinical centers. All participants completed the Composite Autonomic Symptom Score 31 to screen for symptoms of sudomotor dysfunction. Sudomotor function was assessed using the quantitative sudomotor axon reflex test. The results were compared with a historical cohort of 35 pwRRMS matched for age, sex and disease duration. RESULTS: Symptoms of sudomotor dysfunction, defined by a score in the Composite Autonomic Symptom Score 31 secretomotor domain >0, were present in 26 (54%) of pwNMOSD. The quantitative sudomotor axon reflex test confirmed a sudomotor dysfunction in 25 (52.1%) of pwNMOSD; in 14 of them (29.2%) sudomotor dysfunction was moderate or severe. No difference was observed between pwNMOSD and pwRRMS in any of the studied parameters. However, symptomatic sudomotor dysfunction was more frequent in pwNMOSD (n = 8, 22.9%) compared to pwRRMS (n = 1, 3%; p = 0.028). In a multivariable logistic regression analysis, statistically significant predictors for symptomatic sudomotor failure were age and diagnosis of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder. CONCLUSIONS: Sudomotor dysfunction is common in pwNMOSD and more often symptomatic compared to pwRRMS.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Investigation of the comorbidity burden in persons with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) has become increasingly important. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships of cardiovascular disease (CVD) comorbidities and type 2 diabetes with the disability progression. MATERIALS & METHODS: The retrospective cohort study was conducted at the Clinic of Neurology, Belgrade. The Belgrade MS population Registry, which comprises 2725 active MS cases, was used as the source of data. The mean duration of the disease was 21.6 ± 12.5 years. Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) was followed in all PwMS in the Registry. In the statistical analysis, the Cox proportional hazard regression analysis and Kaplan-Meier curve were performed. RESULTS: Hypertension statistically significantly contributed to more rapid reaching investigated levels of irreversible disability (EDSS 4.0, 6.0, and 7.0), while the presence of any of the investigated CVD comorbidities and type 2 diabetes significantly contributed to faster reaching EDSS 4.0 and EDSS 6.0. In a multivariable model, progression index (PI) was singled out (HR = 3.171, p < .001), indicating that higher progression index (PI) was an independent predictor of CVD occurrence in MS patients. In the case of type 2 diabetes, PI (p < .001) and MS phenotype (p = .015) were statistically significant in multivariable Cox regression analysis. CONCLUSIONS: Our study confirms the impact of CVD comorbidities and type 2 diabetes in MS on the progression of disability as measured by EDSS in the large cohort of PwMS from the population Registry.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To translate, culturally adapt and validate the Coronary Revascularisation Outcome Questionnaire (CROQ), a disease-specific tool for measuring health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with ischaemic heart disease (IHD), into Serbian language (CROQ-S). METHODS: Validation study was performed at the Clinic for Cardiac Surgery and Clinic for Cardiology, University Clinical Centre of Serbia. We included a convenience sample of 600 patients with IHD divided into four groups. Acceptability, reliability and validity of the CROQ-S were assessed. RESULTS: CROQ-S was acceptable to patients as demonstrated by less than 1% of missing data for each single item. Cronbach's Alpha was higher than the criterion of 0.70 for all scales in each version except the Cognitive Functioning scale which only met this criterion in the CABG pre-revascularisation version. Mean values of item-total correlations were greater than 0.30 for all scales except the Cognitive Functioning scale in both the pre-revascularisation groups. Compared to the original version, exploratory factor analysis in our study showed more factors; however, the majority of items had a factor loading greater than 0.3 on the right scale. Correlations of CROQ-S scales with the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey and Seattle Angina Questionnaire showed the expected pattern whereby scales measuring similar constructs were most highly correlated. CONCLUSION: CROQ-S is an acceptable, reliable and valid disease-specific instrument for measuring HRQoL in this sample of Serbian speaking patients with IHD both before and after coronary revascularisation. However, the Cognitive Functioning scale did not meet all the psychometric criteria and further validation of its responsiveness is required.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Among different comorbidities occurring in multiple sclerosis (MS), the presence of malignant diseases in these patients is of the particular importance. The aim of this study was to determine the malignant diseases burden in a whole cohort of patients with MS in the Belgrade region, based on the Belgrade population registry data. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study comprises 2725 MS patients from the MS Registry, which represents a source for all necessary demographic and clinical data. Firstly, the Registry was searched for all persons with MS who had cancer comorbidity, during the period 1996-2019. Diagnosis of cancer was validated by the patients' medical documentation. In order to investigate factors associated with the occurrence of any type of the cancer and/ or breast cancer only, in persons with MS, different logistic regression analyses were performed. RESULTS: A total of 64 persons with 69 malignant diseases were observed (prevalence 2.53%). The most frequent malignancies in males were skin cancer (50.0%) and in females, breast cancer (23.2%). The cumulative incidence of cancer comorbidity in persons with MS was 324.9 new cases per 100,000 person-years for the total population (137.6/100,000 in males and 403.6 per 100,000 in females). Comparison of cancer incidence rate between MS and general Belgrade population revealed lower risk for malignancy occurrence in the MS population in total (standardized incidence ratio, SIR = 0.58, 95% CI 0.16-1.49). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings demonstrate that MS patients in the Belgrade region have lower risk for the development of malignancy than age- and sex-matched general population.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) has become leading treatment option for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) due to large vessels occlusion (LVO). Platelet counts may affect outcome in patients with AIS or transient ischemic attack. The aim of our study was to determine the influence of thrombocytopenia on the safety and efficacy of MT in patients with AIS due to anterior circulation LVO. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 127 consecutive adult patients with AIS due to anterior circulation LVO who underwent MT. The patients were divided into 2 groups based on initial platelet count: with thrombocytopenia (<150 × 109/L) and without thrombocytopenia (≥150 × 109/L). Primary safety outcome was symptomatic intracerebral haemorrhage (SICH), while secondary safety outcome was stroke-related mortality. Efficacy outcome was functional independence, defined as modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score 0-2. Follow- up time was 90 days. RESULTS: Initial thrombocytopenia (<150 × 109/L) was detected in 19 (15%) patients. Multivariable analysis showed that initial thrombocytopenia did not increase the risk of SICH and did not affect the short-term functional outcome (p = 0.587). However, initial thrombocytopenia increased the risk for stroke-related mortality (aOR 3.639, 95% CI 1.079-12.641, p = 0.037). The main cause of mortality in the group with thrombocytopenia was malignant cerebral infarction (44.4%). CONCLUSIONS: Thrombocytopenia does not affect the efficacy and the risk of SICH in patients with AIS caused by anterior circulation LVO treated with MT. However, the risk of mortality is higher in patients with thrombocytopenia, mainly due to malignant cerebral infarction.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the leading causes of acute ischemic stroke (AIS). The aim of our study was to determine the influence of AF on the long-term outcome of patients with AIS due to anterior circulation large vessel occlusion (LVO) treated with mechanical thrombectomy (MT). METHODS: Our study included 127 consecutive patients with AIS due to anterior LVO who underwent MT between January 2018 and March 2020. Demographics, clinical, radiological and treatment characteristics were prospectively collected. Modified Rankin scale (mRS) score ≤2 was defined as a good functional outcome. RESULTS: AF was detected in 62 (48.8%) patients. Patients with AF were elder (73.1 ± 8.7 vs. 58.5 ± 14.2 years, p<0.01) and usually female (56.5% vs. 36.9%, p=0.03). They had a lower percentage of good functional outcome (31.6% vs. 62.3%, p<0.01) and a higher mortality rate (47.5% vs. 18.5%, p<0.01) after one year of follow-up. In the multivariate logistic regression the variables that showed significance with p <0.05 in previous univariate analyses were included. The presence of AF (aOR 0.29, 95% CI 0.11-0.78, p=0.01) and initial NIHSS score >15 (aOR 0.25, 95% CI 0.11-0.56, p<0.01) were independent negative predictors of good functional outcome after one year of follow-up. However, the presence of AF did not affect all-cause mortality within one year (p=0.18). CONCLUSION: AF and initial NIHSS score >15 are independent negative predictors of good long-term functional outcome in patients with AIS due to anterior circulation LVO treated with MT.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Many adolescents believe that online health information is reliable, particularly when they are familiar with the source of information. OBJECTIVE: To analyse the degree of influence of online health information on high school students' health decisions and examine whether socio-demographic characteristics, digital literacy, use of different websites and interest in specific health topics are associated with a stronger influence of online health information on adolescents' health-related decisions. METHODS: Participants were students from four public high schools in Belgrade, Serbia. Socio-demographic and behavioural questionnaire as well as the e-health literacy scale (eHEALS) were used to collect data. RESULTS: The study sample comprised 702 students. A total of 79.6% of students reported that online health information influenced their health decisions to a certain extent (from 'a little' to 'a lot'). Being a boy, using the internet since younger age, better self-perceived e-health literacy, using health apps, Google, health forums, websites of health institutions, social media and YouTube, being interested in diet/nutrition, sexually transmitted infections and cigarettes were the characteristics associated with a stronger influence of online health information on students' health decisions. CONCLUSION: This study provides clues about how online health-related information can be used to adjust and enhance health promotion amongst adolescents.

RESUMO

Background and Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate vision-related quality of life (VR-QOL) and treatment satisfaction (TS) in patients with diabetic retinopathy treated with panretinal photocoagulation (PRP). Material and Methods: The panel study included 95 patients who underwent PRP for diabetic retinopathy. Eligible patients with no history of previous PRP were interviewer-administered the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI VFQ-25) and Retinopathy Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire (RetTSQ) beforehandand one month after the last session of laser application. The study was conducted between June 2017 and June 2019 at tertiary care center in Serbia, Belgrade. We assessed pre- to post-PRP values of the composite score and subscale scores of VFQ-25 and RetTSQ, using a paired samples t-test. Univariate logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between binary outcomes and potential predictors. Multivariate regression included predictors from univariate analyses that were statistically significant. Results: The mean VFQ-25 composite score was 65.4 ± 17.4 before and 63.3 ± 19.5 after PRP (p = 0.045). Subscale analysis showed that two of the 11 items achieved a significant decrease after laser application (general vision and dependency). The mean RetTSQ score at baseline was 60.0 ± 11.8 and at the exit visit was 60.3 ± 12.3 (p = 0.858). Sub-scale analysis showed significant deterioration for five of the 13 items. Multivariate logistic regression found that significant predictor of VFQ-25 composite score reduction was fewer laser burns (p = 0.002) while significant predictor of RetTSQ total score reduction was presence of hyperlipidaemia (p = 0.021). Conclusion: The use of vision-related quality of life and treatment satisfaction questionnaires in conjunction with clinical examination, appears to provide a more comprehensive overview of an individual's daily well-being following PRP. Laser treatment for diabetic retinopathy leads to deterioration of some of the patients' perceived VR-QOL and TS. Health-care providers should inform patients about their treatment options and together decide which therapeutic method is best for them.

RESUMO

Introduction: Glioblastoma represents the most aggressive tumor of the brain with an estimated survival rate of twelve to fifteen months after the primary diagnosis. The role of neurotropic viruses in pathogenesis of the tumor has remained unclear to date. During the last two decades, many studies were conducted with the aim of confirming viral influence in the development of glioblastoma. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study in a time period of five years using formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues of glioblastoma. Immunohistochemistry was performed for three viruses: CMV, EBV and HSV-1, using an automated staining system. Results: Mean age of patients in our group was 66.7±8.5 years. A slight male dominance was noted. Negative immunohistochemistry results were obtained for CMV and EBV, which were excluded from further investigation. Based on IRS score, we confirmed six HSV-1 samples which were rated as IRS score 2. Five more samples of HSV-1 were rated as IRS score 1 and were excluded from the study. Conclusion: According to our retrospective study and its results, we found no impact of neurotropic viruses in the survival rate of glioblastoma. Further studies should be conducted including a wider range of viral detection methods.
