Growth and carcass traits are essential selection criteria for beef cattle breeding programs. However, it is necessary to combine these measurements with body composition traits to meet the demand of the consumer market. This study aimed to estimate the genetic parameters for visual scores, growth (pre and post-weaning weights), and carcass (rib eye area (REA), back and rump fat thickness) traits in Nellore cattle using Bayesian inference. Data from 12,060 animals belonging to the HoRa Hofig Ramos herd were used. Morphological traits were evaluated by the MERCOS methodology. The heritability estimates obtained ranged from low to high magnitude, from 0.15 to 0.28 for visual scores, 0.13 to 0.44 for growth, and from 0.42 to 0.46 for carcass traits. Genetic correlations between visual scores and growth traits were generally of moderate to high magnitudes, however, visual scores showed low correlations with carcass traits, except between sacral bone and structure and REA. Selection for visual score traits can lead to favorable responses in body weight and vice versa, but the same is not true for carcass traits. Morphological categorical traits can be used as complementary tools that add value to selection.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Knowledge on the biomechanical behavior of glass-ceramics, their survival rate over time, and their potential failures is essential for decision-making in clinical practice. Systematic reviews and meta-analysis of their survival rates and irreparable failures are lacking. PURPOSE: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the survival rates and irreparable failures of various monolithic glass-ceramic dental restorations to help determine biomechanical indications. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted across the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and EMBASE databases based on the population, intervention, comparison, and outcome (PICO) question, risk of bias assessment, data extraction, subgroup analysis, and meta-analysis. Both randomized and nonrandomized clinical trials that reported survival rate and irreparable failure were screened. The risk, with a 95% confidence interval, was calculated by using the Mantel-Haenszel method. RESULTS: A total of 46 articles met the inclusion criteria: 8 for laminate veneers, 20 for partial coverage restorations, 11 for single crowns, and 6 for fixed partial dentures, encompassing 1715 participants rehabilitated with 4209 restorations. The estimated cumulative survival rate for partial coverage restorations was 90% over an average span of 6.2 years, with an irreparable failure occurrence of n=5.9. Laminate veneers had a survival rate of 90.2% over 6.5 years, with an irreparable failure occurrence of n=8.2. Single crowns had a survival rate of 96% over 4.6 years and an irreparable failure of n=2.7. Conversely, fixed partial dentures had a survival rate of 76.1% over 6.5 years with an irreparable failure of n=5.2. CONCLUSIONS: Glass-ceramic materials demonstrate relatively high survival rates, indicating that they provide a safe and reliable option for partial coverage restorations, laminate veneers, and single crowns. However, fixed partial dentures had a higher proportion of irreparable failures and a lower survival rate, and caution is required.

RESUMO

Cetacean morbillivirus (CeMV) causes illness and death in cetaceans worldwide; the CeMV strains circulating in the Southern Hemisphere are poorly known. We detected a pilot whale CeMV strain in 3 short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) stranded in Brazil during July-October 2020. Our results confirm this virus circulates in this species.

The objective of this study was to estimate the genetic parameters for feed efficiency-related traits and their genetic correlations with growth, male fertility, and carcass traits using multi-trait analysis in Guzerat cattle. Further, it aimed to predict the direct and correlated responses for feed efficiency traits when selection was applied for growth, male fertility, and carcass traits. The evaluated traits were adjusted weight at 120 (W120), 210 (W210), 365 (W365), and 450 days of age (W450), adjusted scrotal circumference at 365 days of age (SC365) and at 450 days of age (SC450), scrotal circumference, ribeye area (REA), backfat thickness (BFT), rump fat thickness (RFT), residual feed intake (RFI), and dry matter intake (DMI). The genetic parameters were obtained by the restricted maximum likelihood method (REML), using an animal model in multi-trait analyses. The heritability estimates for W120, W210, W365, W450, SC365, and SC450 varied from low to high (0.17 to 0.39). The carcass traits, REA, BFT, and RFT, displayed low to moderate heritability estimates, 0.27, 0.10, and 0.31, respectively. The heritability estimates for RFI (0.15) and DMI (0.23) were low and moderate, respectively. The RFI showed low genetic correlations with growth traits, ranging from - 0.07 to 0.22, from 0.03 to 0.05 for scrotal circumference, and from - 0.35 to 0.16 for carcass, except for DMI, which ranged from 0.42 to 0.46. The RFI and DMI presented enough additive genetic variability to be used as selection criteria in Guzerat breed genetic improvement program. Additionally, the response to selection for RFI would be higher when selection is performed directly for this trait. The selection for residual feed intake would not promote unfavorable correlated responses for scrotal circumference, carcass (yield and finish), and growth traits. Therefore, the selection for more efficient animals would not compromise the productive, reproductive, and carcass performance, contributing to reduce the production costs, increasing the profitability and sustainability of beef cattle production in tropical areas.

Drought is one of the main problems linked to climate change that is faced by agriculture, affecting various globally important crops, including sugarcane. Environmentally sustainable strategies have been sought to mitigate the effects of climate change on crops. Among them, the use of beneficial microorganisms offers a promising approach. However, it is still necessary to understand the mechanisms that regulate plant-microorganism interactions, in normal situations and under stress. In this work, the rhizosphere metagenomes of two sugarcane varieties, one resistant and the other susceptible to drought, were compared under normal conditions and under water-limiting conditions. The results showed that for the drought-resistant sugarcane variety, bacteria belonging to the order Sphingomonadales and the family Xanthomonadaceae presented increased activities in terms of mobility, colonization, and cell growth. In contrast, the rhizosphere associated with the drought-sensitive variety exhibited increases of bacteria belonging to the family Polyangiaceae, and the genus Streptomyces, with modifications in DNA metabolism and ribosome binding proteins. The results pointed to variation in the rhizosphere microbiota that was modulated by the host plant genotype, revealing potential bacterial candidates that could be recruited to assist plants during water-limiting conditions.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the predatory activity of the nematophagous fungus Duddingtonia flagrans on infective larvae of gastrointestinal nematodes from dairy heifers in different conditions (shaded and sunny) of a silvopastoral system (SPS) on an agroecological farm. Ten Jersey heifers were divided into two groups: treated (received pellets containing fungus); and control (received pellets without fungus). Twelve hours after fungus administration, faeces samples were collected for in vitro efficacy tests. The animals then remained for 8 h in the experimental pasture area. At the end of this period, 20 faecal pads (10 treated and 10 control) were selected. Pasture, faecal pad and soil collections occurred at intervals of seven days (d), totalling four assessments over 28 d. To evaluate the influence of the conditions shaded and sunny, we registered the condition of the location of each faecal pad per hour. After 12 h of gastrointestinal transit in dairy heifers, a reduction of 65% was obtained through the in vitro test. The treated group presented a lower number of infective larvae (L3) in the faecal pad and upper pasture. Differences in numbers of L3 were observed between the conditions (sunny and shaded) in the faecal pad of the control group; while in the treated group there were no differences between the conditions. The predatory activity of the fungus was efficient over time in the shaded and sunny conditions of an SPS, decreasing the parasite contamination during the pasture recovery time in a subtropical climate.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Although telemedicine use has been under discussion for decades, this topic has gained unprecedented importance during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Rheumatoid Arthritis Disease Activity Index (RADAI) is a user-friendly tool, fully self-administered, to assess rheumatoid arthritis (RA) disease activity. The aim of this study was to compare the performance of RADAI with other disease activity indices, functional status, and inflammatory markers in a large cohort of RA patients. METHODS: We assessed the concurrent validity of RADAI against Clinical Disease Activity Index (CDAI), Disease Activity Score in 28 Joints-C-reactive protein, Disease Activity Score in 28 Joints-erythrocyte sedimentation rate, Simplified Disease Activity Index, and physician assessment of disease activity and the correlation of RADAI with Health Assessment Questionnaire-Disability Index and inflammatory markers at the REAL Study baseline. We also evaluated the correlation of the change in RADAI and the change in CDAI over a 6-month follow-up. RESULTS: From the 1115 patients included in the REAL Study, 1113 had RADAI scores in the first assessment. At baseline, correlations between RADAI and other disease activity indices were strong, ranging from 0.64 (comparison with physician assessment) to 0.79 (comparison with CDAI). Correlation between the change in RADAI score over the 6 months of follow-up and the change in CDAI score over the same period was moderate/strong for the overall group and within the stratified analyses. CONCLUSION: The strong correlation of RADAI with other well-established tools for disease activity measurement reassures its use with RA patients' follow-up, especially in this new era of telemedicine.

BACKGROUND: Antegrade access for infrainguinal endovascular intervention can be achieved through the common femoral artery (CFA) or superficial femoral artery (SFA). A few studies with small sample sizes have shown similar efficacy and safety for antegrade puncture of the CFA and SFA. In the present study, we analyzed the feasibility of SFA access and the occurrence of complications between SFA and CFA ipsilateral access in a broader cohort. METHODS: In the present retrospective study, we analyzed data from 462 patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) who had undergone peripheral angioplasty from 2009 to 2016. The inclusion criteria were PAD at Rutherford stage 3 to 6 and use of an endovascular approach. Patients with coagulation disorders, those receiving anticoagulant therapy, cases with deployment of closure devices, cases with more than one access on the same limb, and patients with inadequate bed rest after the procedure were excluded. A systematic analysis of all patients' electronic medical records was performed to evaluate the demographic aspects and technical success and identify the possible complications associated with CFA and SFA access. RESULTS: Of the 462 patients, 290 had undergone SFA puncture and 172, CFA puncture. The demographic evaluation of both groups revealed no differences between the two groups, except that more patients with diabetes were in the CFA group and more patients with dyslipidemia and an advanced clinical presentation were in the SFA group. First puncture access was successful in 99.7% of the SFA group and 96.5% of the CFA group (P = .01). The hematoma rate in the SFA and CFA groups was 20.3% and 11%, respectively (P = .01). The incidence of major bleeding and clinically relevant nonmajor bleeding was not significantly different between the two groups (P = .215). Only three patients had developed a pseudoaneurysm, two of whom were in the SFA group. Female sex (odds ratio [OR], 2.572; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.520-4.354; P < .001] and older age (OR, 1.034; 95% CI, 1.009-1.059; P = .007) were associated with an increased hematoma rate. CONCLUSIONS: SFA access was associated with a higher overall rate of hematoma compared with CFA access. However, no significant difference was found in the incidence of major bleeding between the two access sites. Planned SFA access should be considered as an alternative to CFA access.

This study evaluated the association of urinary nitrate concentrations with cognition in older subjects enrolled in the NHANES study. We also explored whether associations between urinary nitrate and cognition were modified by cardiovascular risk, vitamin D status and vitamin C intake. Two NHANES cycles were merged (2011-2012 and 2013-2014) and a total of 1,015 adults aged 60-80 (69.4 ± 0.3) years were included. Cognition was assessed using the Word List Learning, Word List Recall, Animal Fluency and the Digit Symbol Substitution tests. Urinary nitrate was analysed using electrospray tandem mass spectrometry. Urinary nitrate concentrations were not associated with cognitive performance on any of the cognitive tests. Associations were also not significant in subjects at greater risk for cognitive impairment (i.e. high cardiovascular risk and non-optimal vitamin D status). Longitudinal analyses are needed to explore the associations of urinary nitrate concentrations with dietary nitrate intake and cognitive function.

Biological control is a strategy to decrease parasitic populations, and the action takes place through natural antagonists in the environment. We studied the predatory activity of the fungus Duddingtonia flagrans in infective larvae (L3) of gastrointestinal nematodes after gastrointestinal transit. Ten heifers were divided into two groups: treated (animals received pellets containing fungus) and control (animals received pellets without fungus). Twelve hours after administration, faeces samples were collected for in vitro efficacy tests. The animals then remained for 7 h in the experimental pasture area. At the end of this period, 20 faecal pads (ten treated and ten control) were selected at random. Pasture, faecal pad and soil collections occurred with an interval of 7 days, totalling four assessments. In vitro activity demonstrated that fungi effectively preyed on L3, achieving a reduction percentage of 88%. In the faecal pad of the pasture area, there was a difference (P < 0.05) between collections 3 and 4 for both groups; in the treated group a reduction of 65% was obtained, while in the control group there was an increase of 217% in the number of L3. The recovery of L3 in the soil and in the pasture was similar in both groups. There was no influence (P = 0.87) of the passage time on the fungus predatory activity. Duddingtonia flagrans demonstrated the ability to survive gastrointestinal transit in the animals, reducing the number of L3 in the faeces, indicating that this biological control has great potential in the control of worm infections.

The aim of this study was to characterise changes in lean soft tissue (LST) and examine the contributions of energy intake, physical activity and breast-feeding practices to LST changes at 3 and 9 months postpartum. We examined current weight, LST (via dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry), dietary intake (3-d food diary), physical activity (Baecke questionnaire) and breast-feeding practices (3-d breast-feeding diary) in forty-nine women aged 32·9 (sd 3·8) years. Changes in LST varied from -2·51 to +2·50 kg with twenty-nine women gaining LST (1·1 (sd 0·7) kg, P<0·001) and twenty women losing LST (-0·9 (sd 0·8) kg, P<0·001). Energy intake (133 (SD 42) v. 109 (SD 33) kJ/kg, P=0·019) and % kJ from fat at 3 months postpartum was higher in women who gained LST at 9 months postpartum (gained LST=34 (sd 5) % kJ; lost LST=29 (sd 4) % kJ, P=0·002). Women who gained LST reported breast-feeding their infants more frequently (gained LST=8 (sd 3) feeds/d; lost LST=5 (sd 1) feeds/d, P=0·014) and for more time per d (gained LST=115 (sd 78) min/d; lost LST=59 (sd 34) min/d, P=0·016) at 9 months postpartum. Energy intake and % kJ from fat at 3 months were significant predictors of LST gain (ß=0·08 (se 0·04) and 0·24 (se 0·09), respectively). This suggests that gain in LST may be associated with more frequent and longer episodes of breast-feeding at 9 months postpartum as well as dietary intake early in the postpartum period.

In the rhizosphere, the soil bacteria and the plants are closely related, with the plant-associated microbiota playing an important role in promoting plant growth under both normal and stress conditions. In this study, the cultivable bacteria in the sugarcane rhizosphere under different levels of drought stress were characterized and screened for plant growth activities. The results suggested that the microbial community associated with the sugarcane rhizosphere was strongly affected by drought, but some important genera of bacteria such as Arthrobacter, Pseudomonas, Microbacterium, and Bacillus remained present during the entire experiment, indicating the adaptability of these organisms and their importance in the rhizosphere community. Many isolates exhibited positive results for one or more plant growth activity, and they were also capable of growing under simulated drought stress, suggesting that the microorganisms isolated from the sugarcane rhizosphere could be explored for uses such as biofertilizers or biocontrol agents in agriculture.

BACKGROUND: CD64 (FcγR1) is a high-affinity receptor for monomeric IgG1 and IgG3. Circulating neutrophils express very low amounts of CD64 on their surface. OBJECTIVES: Our primary aim was to investigate the utility of neutrophil CD64 surface expression as a biomarker of active pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). We hypothesised that elevated neutrophil CD64 expression in TB infection would be associated with interferon gamma (IFN-γ) as an inducer of CD64 expression. METHODS: The expression level of CD64 per neutrophil (PMN CD64 index) was quantitatively measured with flow cytometry using a Leuko64 kit in samples from patients with TB and latent TB infection (LTBI) as well as healthy controls, as part of a prospective cohort study in Brazil. FINDINGS: The PMN CD64 index in patients with TB was higher than that in healthy controls and LTBI. Receiver operating characteristic curve analyses determined that the PMN CD64 index could discriminate patients with TB from those with LTBI and healthy individuals. PMN CD64 index levels returned to baseline levels after treatment. CONCLUSIONS: The positive regulation of CD64 expression in circulating neutrophils of patients with active TB could represent an additional biomarker for diagnosis of active TB and could be used for monitoring individuals with LTBI before progression of TB disease.

PURPOSE: Energy metabolism is at the core of maintaining healthy body weights. Likewise, the assessment of energy needs is essential for providing adequate dietary advice. We explored differences in energy metabolism of a primigravid woman (age: 30 years) at 1 month prepregnancy ("baseline"), during pregnancy (33 weeks), and at 3 and 9 months postpartum. Measured versus estimated energy expenditure were compared using equations commonly used in clinical practice. METHODS: Energy metabolism was measured using a state-of-the-art whole body calorimetry unit (WBCU). Body composition (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry), energy intake (3-day food records), physical activity (Baecke questionnaire), and breastmilk volume/breastfeeding energy expenditure (24-hours of infant test-retest weighing) were assessed. RESULTS: This case report is the first to assess energy expenditure in 3 different stages of a woman's life (prepregnancy, pregnancy, and postpartum) using WBCU. We noticed that weight and energy needs returned to prepregnancy values at 9 months postpartum, although a pattern of altered body composition emerged (higher fat/lean ratio) without changes in physical activity and energy intake. For this woman, current recommendations for energy overestimated actual needs by 350 kcal/day (9 months postpartum). CONCLUSION: It is likely that more accurate approaches are needed to estimate energy needs during and postpregnancy, with targeted interventions to optimize body composition.

One of the main goals of coral microbiology is to understand the ways in which coral-bacteria associations are established and maintained. This work describes the sequencing of the genome of Paracoccus sp. SM22M-07 isolated from the mucus of the endemic Brazilian coral species Mussismilia hispida. Comparative analysis was used to identify unique genomic features of SM22M-07 that might be involved in its adaptation to the marine ecosystem and the nutrient-rich environment provided by coral mucus, as well as in the establishment and strengthening of the interaction with the host. These features included genes related to the type IV protein secretion system, erythritol catabolism, and succinoglycan biosynthesis. We experimentally confirmed the production of succinoglycan by Paracoccus sp. SM22M-07 and we hypothesize that it may be involved in the association of the bacterium with coral surfaces.

Steroidal and non-steroidalanti-inflammatories are pharmaceutical prescribed in human medicine and have the potential to contaminate water and sediments via inputs from sewage treatment plants. Their impacts on humans and ecosystems are emerging issues in environmental health. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the effects of diclofenac and dexamethasone in male fish Hoplias malabaricus after trophic exposure. Fish were fed twice every week with Astyanax sp. submitted to intraperitoneal inoculation with diclofenac (0; 0.2; 2.0 or 20.0 µg/kg) or dexamethasone (0; 0.03; 0.3 or 3.0 µg/kg). After 12 doses, blood was collected for testosterone dosage. The gonad and liver were collected to calculate gonadosomatic (GSI) and hepatosomatic index (HSI). Antioxidants enzymes activity and biotransformation were also evaluated in liver and gonads. In liver, diclofenac caused oxidative stress with increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities and lipoperoxidation (LPO). The GST activity was reduced by diclofenac in liver. Trophic exposure of H. malabaricus to dexamethasone caused an increase in antioxidant system (GPx, CAT, GST, and GSH) and LPO in liver. However, it reduced antioxidant system (GPX and GST activities and GSH) in gonads. Both diclofenac and dexamethasone reduced the levels of testosterone, causing impairment to reproduction. Diclofenac reduced HSI at the 0.2 µg/kg, but not GSI. Our results suggest that the anti-inflammatory drugs diclofenac and dexamethasone caused oxidative stress and reduced testosterone levels that can have a negative impact in aquatic organisms.

The core microbiota of a neutral mine drainage and the surrounding high heavy metal content soil at a Brazilian copper mine were characterized by 16S rDNA pyrosequencing. The core microbiota of the drainage was dominated by the generalist genus Meiothermus. The soil samples contained a more heterogeneous bacterial community, with the presence of both generalist and specialist bacteria. Both environments supported mainly heterotrophic bacteria, including organisms resistant to heavy metals, although many of the bacterial groups identified remain poorly characterized. The results contribute to the understanding of bacterial communities in soils impacted by neutral mine drainage, for which information is scarce, and demonstrate that heavy metals can play an important role in shaping the microbial communities in mine environments.

This study aimed to produces and characterize bovine hydroxyapatite (HA) bioceramic with 3Y-TZP addition and analyze different sintering curves. HA was extracted from bovine bones and nanoparticulated. HA discs (0, 1, 5 and 10 wt% 3Y-TZP) were subjected to uniaxial and isostatic pressing. Dilatometry analysis was performed and the groups were sintered using 3 different firing curves (conventional, 1300 °C; 2-step, 1292 °C; 2-step, 1420 °C). The samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), biaxial flexural strength (BFS), Vickers microhardness (VH) and Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The dilatometry results signaled the need for sintering optimization in groups added with 3Y-TZP. XRD demonstrated the characteristic crystallographic peaks of HA in the pure groups and with 1% 3Y-TZP, and decomposition of HA into ß-TCP and formation of calcium zirconate in the groups with 5 and 10% 3Y-TZP. Considering each composition, the groups of pure HA (131.3 ± 13.5 MPa; 401 ± 12.7 GPa) sintered by the conventional curve and HA+1%3Y-TZP (145 ± 8.6 MPa; 507 ± 47.9 GPa), HA+5%3Y-TZP (68.1 ± 14.2 MPa; 183 ± 9.8 GPa) and HA+10%3Y-TZP (55.6 ± 5.1 MPa; 96.1 ± 7.64 GPa) sintered by the 2-step curve at 1420 °C, combined the best BFS and VH results. The addition of 1 wt% 3Y-TZP and optimization in the sintering process improved the mechanical and microstructural properties of HA bioceramics and maintenance of its crystalline characteristics. Refinement in material processing is necessary for the future use of this bioceramic in dentistry.
