This study focused on the investigation microplastics (MPs) with a size of ≤1.0 mm in sand samples from Thanh Phu beach, Ben Tre, Vietnam. MPs in sand from the clam beach (from 39.67 ± 6.67 to 92.00 ± 12.93 items kg-1 dried sand) were higher than those from the bathing beach (from 21.33 ± 8.76 to 51.67 ± 16.11 items kg-1 dried sand), indicating a direct contribution of MPs from coastal aquaculture. For the clam beach, MPs in surface samples (0-4 cm) were lower than in deep samples (4-6 cm). In contrast, MPs in surface samples (0-2 cm) from the bathing beach were higher than deep samples (2-5 cm). A combination of microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy methods confirmed that 62.5% of the representative MPs samples or 18.9% of the suspected MPs samples were plastics. Low-density polyethylene, polypropylene and polyethylene terephthalate were the largest in abundance. Further studies are needed to assess the environmental risk of MPs accumulation.

BACKGROUND: Autologous Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation with or without CD34+ selection is being used successfully to treat patients with severe and refractory autoimmune disease. This study describes our experience of CD34+ stem cell mobilization, harvesting and selection in autoimmune patients based on conditions in Vietnam - the developing country. METHODS: Eight autoimmune patients (four patients with Myasthenia Gravis and four patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus) underwent PBSC mobilization with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) and cyclophosphamide. The apheresis was performed on a Terumo BCT Spectra Optia machine. CD34+ hematopoetic stem cells were collected from the leukapheresis by CliniMACS Plus device using CD34 Enrichment KIT. CD34+ cells, T and B lymphocytes were counted on a FACS BD Canto II device. RESULTS: Eight patients (4 MG and 4 SLE) including 5 females and 3 males were involved in this study. The mean age of the patients was 33.13 ± 16.64 years (ranging from 13 to 58 years). The average number of days for mobilization was 7.9 ± 1.6 days, whereas the average number of days for harvesting was 1.5 ± 0.5 days. There was no difference in the number of days for mobilization and harvesting between the MG and SLE groups. The number of CD34+ cells in peripheral blood (PB) on the day of harvesting was 108.37 ± 59.64 x 106 cells/L. There was a significant difference in white blood cell (WBC), neutrophil, monocyte, and platelet cell counts between before and after mobilization. On the day of stem cell harvesting, variables such as WBC, neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, platelet, CD34+ cell counts, and hemoglobin were not different between the MG and SLE groups. The CD34+ recovery percentage following the CD34+ selection procedure was 68.8%, whereas almost 99.9% of the T and B lymphocytes, and NK cells in the PBSC products were eliminated. CONCLUSIONS: Very first attempts in mobilizing, harvesting, and selecting CD34+ stem cells were successful, paving the way for autoimmune patients to have autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in Vietnam.

The aim of this study was to assess the glycogen content in the muscle and liver tissues of the climbing perch (Anabas testudineus) exposed to sublethal concentrations of Cd and Pb over 28 days of exposure and 14 days of depuration. Muscle and liver glycogen levels in A. testudineus after Pb or Cd treatment were significantly lower (p < 0.05) than that of A. testudineus in the control group during the exposure phase. In the recovery phase, muscle, and liver glycogen levels in A. testudineus increased in all Pb treatment groups, whereas they continuously decreased in all Cd treatment groups. Fish affected by Cd had obvious difficulties recovering from the stress response. It was concluded that exposure to the tested concentrations of Pb and Cd could be a potent endocrine activity disruptor, which may lead to adverse impacts on the health of A. testudineus.

BACKGROUND: The role of antibiotics in the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations and their effectiveness in combination have not been clearly established. To determine whether using a combination of fluoroquinolones and beta-lactams improves the clinical and microbiological efficacy of antibiotics on day 20 of treatment, we conducted an open-label randomized trial based on clinical outcomes, microbiological clearance, spirometry tests, and signs of systemic inflammation in patients hospitalized with acute exacerbations of COPD. METHODS: We enrolled 139 subjects with COPD exacerbations, defined as acute worsening of respiratory symptoms leading to additional treatment. Patients were divided randomly into two groups: 79 patients using beta-lactam antibiotics alone and 60 using beta-lactam antibiotics plus fluoroquinolones. Clinical and microbiological responses, spirometry tests, symptom scores, and serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were evaluated. RESULTS: Clinical success, lung function, and symptoms were similar in patients with or without fluoroquinolone administration on days 10 and 20. Combination therapy was superior in terms of microbiological outcomes and reduction in serum CRP value. Although equivalent to monotherapy in terms of clinical success, the combination showed superiority in terms of microbiological success and a decrease in CRP. The combination therapy group had a higher microbiological success rate with gram-negative bacteria than the monotherapy group with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (100% vs. 33.3%, respectively) and Acinetobacter baumanii (100% vs. 20%, respectively) (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Concomitant use of fluoroquinolone and beta-lactam antibiotics for bacterial infections during COPD exacerbations caused by gram-negative bacteria appear to be effective and should be applied in clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: Blood stream infections (BSI) caused by Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamases (ESBLs) producing Enterobacteriaceae is a clinical challenge leading to high mortality, especially in developing countries. In this study, we sought to describe the epidemiology of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli strains isolated from Vietnamese individuals with BSI, to investigate the concordance of genotypic-phenotypic resistance, and clinical outcome of ESBL E. coli BSI. METHODS: A total of 459 hospitalized patients with BSI were screened between October 2014 and May 2016. 115 E. coli strains from 115 BSI patients were isolated and tested for antibiotic resistance using the VITEK®2 system. The ESBL phenotype was determined by double disk diffusion method following the guideline of Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute. Screening for beta-lactamase (ESBL and carbapenemase) genes was performed using a multiplex-PCR assay. RESULTS: 58% (67/115) of the E. coli strains were ESBL-producers and all were susceptible to both imipenem and meropenem. Resistance to third-generation cephalosporin was common, 70% (81/115) were cefotaxime-resistant and 45% (52/115) were ceftazidime-resistant. blaCTX-M was the most common ESBL gene detected (70%; 80/115) The sensitivity and specificity of blaCTX-M-detection to predict the ESBL phenotype was 87% (76-93% 95% CI) and 54% (39-48% 95% CI), respectively. 28%% (22/80) of blaCTX-M were classified as non-ESBL producers by phenotypic testing for ESBL production. The detection of blaCTX-M in ESBL-negative E. coli BSI was associated with fatal clinical outcome (27%; 6/22 versus 8%; 2/26, p = 0.07). CONCLUSION: A high prevalence of ESBL-producing E. coli isolates harbouring blaCTX-M was observed in BSI patients in Vietnam. The genotypic detection of blaCTX-M may have added benefit in optimizing and guiding empirical antibiotic therapy of E. coli BSI to improve clinical outcome.

Only limited data are available concerning the long-term outcomes of imatinib treatment among Vietnamese or Asian patients with unresectable or recurrent gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). Our study, which was conducted in 188 patients, aimed to assess the efficacy of imatinib mesylate against unresectable or recurrent GISTs. Imatinib had a high response rate and long survival. Some predictors favorable for progression-free survival and overall survival are good performance status and response with imatinib. Findings are discussed in relation to clinical practice in low- and middle-income country.

BACKGROUND: Pooling sputum specimens is one potential strategy for reducing the cost of using Xpert MTB/RIF, a rapid polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based test, for the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis. We sought to compare the sensitivity of two alternative method of pooling. METHODS: Patients referred for assessment for TB, whose initial sputum was Xpert MTB positive, were recruited and their sputum specimens were pooled for analysis with sputum specimens that were Xpert MTB negative. Two alternative pooling strategies were employed: one in which the concentration of sample reagent (buffer) was maintained at 2:1 (standard), in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, and another in which the concentration of sample reagent was reduced to 1:1. RESULTS: We tested 101 Xpert MTB positive sputum specimens. Among these, 96% of valid test results (95% confidence interval (CI) 89-99%) were positive using the "standard buffer method". Using the "reduced buffer pooling" method 94% of valid test results (95% CI 87-98%) were positive. McNemar's test for the difference in paired proportions did not reach statistical significance (P = 0.56). CONCLUSION: We have confirmed that pooling of two sputum specimens for testing in a single cartridge is a valid method of reducing the number of cartridges required when using Xpert MTB to detect pulmonary tuberculosis. Two alternative pooling strategies tested here yielded similar results. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The present study was conducted within the Active Casefinding in Tuberculosis (ACT3) Trial. The ACT3 Trial had been registered with Australian and New Zealand Clinical Trials Register on 8th April, 2014. The trial registration number is ACTRN12614000372684 . (Retrospectively registered).

BACKGROUND: Considerable progress has been made in dengue management, however the lack of appropriate predictors of severity has led to huge number of unwanted admissions mostly decided on the grounds of warning signs. Apoptosis related mediators, among others, are known to correlate with severe dengue (SD) although no predictive validity is established. The objective of this study was to investigate the association of plasma cell-free DNA (cfDNA) with SD, and evaluate its prognostic value in SD prediction at acute phase. METHODS: This was a hospital-based prospective cohort study conducted in Vietnam. All the recruited patients were required to be admitted to the hospital and were strictly monitored for various laboratory and clinical parameters (including progression to SD) until discharged. Plasma samples collected during acute phase (6-48 h before defervescence) were used to estimate the level of cfDNA. RESULTS: Of the 61 dengue patients, SD patients (n = 8) developed shock syndrome in 4.8 days (95% CI 3.7-5.4) after the fever onset. Plasma cfDNA levels before the defervescence of SD patients were significantly higher than the non-SD group (p = 0.0493). From the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, a cut-off of > 36.9 ng/mL was able to predict SD with a good sensitivity (87.5%), specificity (54.7%), and area under the curve (AUC) (0.72, 95% CI 0.55-0.88; p = 0.0493). CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, these findings suggest that cfDNA could serve as a potential prognostic biomarker of SD. Studies with cfDNA kinetics and its combination with other biomarkers and clinical parameters would further improve the diagnostic ability for SD.

The accumulation, elimination and effect of heavy metals on plasma cortisol levels in Oreochromis sp. were studied in the exposure and recovery phases. In the exposure phase, the mean rate of accumulation in the tissues was in the order gill > liver > muscle for Pb exposure and muscle > liver > gill for As exposure. In the recovery phase, the order of elimination in the tissues was gill > liver > muscle for Pb and liver > gill > muscle for As. The amount of cortisol secreted by the Oreochromis sp. after Pb or As treatment was lower compared to Oreochromis sp. in the control group during the exposure phase. In the recovery phase, plasma cortisol levels in Oreochromis sp. increased in all Pb treatment groups while it continuously decreased in all As treatment groups. A fish affected by As has obvious difficulty recovering from the stress response. It was concluded that exposure to the tested concentrations of Pb and As over 20 days could be a potent endocrine disruptor, which may lead to adverse impacts on the health of the Oreochromis sp.

BACKGROUND: Blood cultures are commonly employed to identify bacterial pathogens causing sepsis. PCR assays to diagnose septicemia require extraction of bacterial DNA from blood samples and thus, delay the initiation of appropriate antimicrobial treatment. The presence of abundant human DNA may hamper the sensitivity of PCR in the detection of bacteria. METHODS: We used serial dilutions of E. Coli spiked pseudo-blood-sepsis samples to develop a simple method that combines the use of a polar detergent solvent and adjustment of the basic pH to remove human DNA. A 16S rRNA gene-based screening algorithm was established to differentiate Gram-positive and Gram-negative groups of bacteria and the family of Enterobacteriaceae. A stringent validation with appropriate controls was implemented. The method of human DNA removal was then applied on 194 sepsis blood samples and 44 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples by real-time PCR. RESULTS: This uncomplicated and straightforward approach allows to remove up to 98 % of human DNA from peripheral blood of septic patients. The inhibitory effect of human DNA is efficiently prevented and the detection limit of real-time PCR is increased to 10 E. Coli CFUs/ml. This sensitivity is 10 times higher compared to conventional real-time PCR assays. The classical blood culture detected 58/194 (30 %) of sepsis and 9/44 (21 %) of CSF samples. Out of the 194 blood samples tested, the conventional real-time PCR targeting 13 common sepsis causing pathogens correctly detected the bacterial DNA in 16/194 (8 %) only and 14/44 (32 %) in cerebrospinal fluid samples. Our newly established approach was able to provide correct diagnoses in 78 (40 %) of the 194 blood samples and in 14 (32 %) of the CSF samples. The combination of both blood cultures and our technique raised the rate of sepsis diagnoses to 112/194 (58 %). Of the total group tested positive, 46 (24 %) cases showed overlap with the classical methodology. CONCLUSION: We report a simple optimized in-house protocol for removal of human DNA from blood sepsis samples as a pre-analytical tool to prepare DNA for subsequent PCR assays. With the detection increase of our in-house DNA removal approach, subsequent PCR assays can reach detection limits of 10 E. coli CFUs/ml and significantly improve the diagnostic rate in blood sepsis cases.

In this study, the performance of poly(layered double hydroxides) [poly(LDHs)] beads as an adsorbent for arsenate removal from aqueous solution was investigated. The poly(LDHs) beads were prepared by immobilizing LDHs into spherical alginate/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-glutaraldehyde beads (spherical polymer beads). Batch adsorption studies were conducted to assess the effect of contact time, solution pH, initial arsenate concentrations and co-existing anions on arsenate removal performance. The potential reuse of these poly(LDHs) beads was also investigated. Approximately 79.1 to 91.2% of arsenic was removed from an arsenate solution (50 mg As L(-1)) by poly(LDHs). The adsorption data were well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and the Langmuir isotherm model, and the adsorption capacities of these poly(LDHs) beads at pH 8 were from 1.64 to 1.73 mg As g(-1), as calculated from the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The adsorption ability of the poly(LDHs) beads decreased by approximately 5-6% after 5 adsorption-desorption cycles. Phosphates markedly decreased arsenate removal. The effect of co-existing anions on the adsorption capacity declined in the following order: HPO4 (2-) >> HCO3 (-) > SO4 (2-) > Cl(-). A fixed-bed column study was conducted with real-life arsenic-containing water. The breakthrough time was found to be from 7 to 10 h. Under optimized conditions, the poly(LDHs) removed more than 82% of total arsenic. The results obtained in this study will be useful for further extending the adsorbents to the field scale or for designing pilot plants in future studies. From the viewpoint of environmental friendliness, the poly(LDHs) beads are a potential cost-effective adsorbent for arsenate removal in water treatment.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the prevalence and socio-cultural correlates of postnatal mood disturbance amongst women 18-45 years old in Central Vietnam. Son preference and traditional confinement practices were explored as well as factors such as poverty, parity, family and intimate partner relationships and infant health. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in twelve randomly selected Commune Health Centres from urban and rural districts of Thua Thien Hue Province, Vietnam. Mother-infant dyads one to six months postpartum were invited to participate. Questionnaires from 431 mothers (urban n = 216; rural n = 215) assessed demographic and family characteristics, traditional confinement practices, son preference, infant health and social capital. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and WHO5 Wellbeing Index indicated depressive symptoms and emotional wellbeing. Data were analysed using general linear models. RESULTS: Using an EPDS cut-off of 12/13, 18.1% (n = 78, 95% CI 14.6-22.1) of women had depressive symptoms (20.4% urban; 15.8% rural). Contrary to predictions, infant gender and traditional confinement were unrelated to depressive symptoms. Poverty, food insecurity, being frightened of family members, and intimate partner violence increased both depressive symptoms and lowered wellbeing. The first model accounted for 30.2% of the variance in EPDS score and found being frightened of one's husband, husband's unemployment, breastfeeding difficulties, infant diarrhoea, and cognitive social capital were associated with higher EPDS scores. The second model had accounted for 22% of the variance in WHO5 score. Living in Hue city, low education, poor maternal competence and a negative family response to the baby lowered maternal wellbeing. CONCLUSIONS: Traditional confinement practices and son preference were not linked to depressive symptoms among mothers, but were correlates of family relationships and wellbeing. Poverty, food insecurity, violence, infant ill health, and discordant intimate and family relationships were linked with depressive symptoms in Central Vietnam.

Vietnam plans to replace the routine childhood diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus combination (DPT) vaccine with a pentavalent vaccine. The present study was performed to assess the immunogenicity and safety of the combined diphtheria, tetanus, whole-cell pertussis, hepatitis B (HepB), and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) (DTwP-HepB-Hib) Quinvaxem® vaccine in children. A total of 131 infants received the Quinvaxem® vaccine at 2, 3 and 4 months. Antibody levels were measured at baseline, at one month after the third injection and one year after the first injection. Seroprotection rates were high for each vaccine antigen at one month after the third dose: 93.1% for diphtheria, 98.5% for tetanus, 99.2% for pertussis (seroconversion rate), 93.1% for HepB, and 100% for Hib (anti-PRP ≥ 0.15 µg/ml). The rate of children with protective antibodies persisting at one year after the first dose was 88.4% for diphtheria, 49.6% for pertussis, 82.2% for tetanus, 76.7% for HepB and 97.7% for Hib (anti-PRP ≥ 0.15 µg/ml). The Quinvaxem® vaccine was well tolerated and has a low rate of adverse events. Quinvaxem® given at 2, 3 and 4 months of age was immunogenic and safe for primary immunization among infants in Vietnam.

RESUMO

In recent years, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have globally shown increasing impact on health status in populations with disproportionately higher rates in developing countries. NCDs are the leading cause of mortality worldwide and a serious public health threat to developing countries. Recognizing the importance and urgency of the issue, a one-day symposium was organized on NCDs in Developing Countries by the CIHLMU Center for International Health, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Munich on 22nd March 2014. The objective of the symposium was to understand the current situation of different NCDs public health programs and the current trends in NCDs research and policy, promote exchange of ideas, encourage scientific debate and foster networking, partnerships and opportunities among experts from different clinical, research, and policy fields. The symposium was attended by more than seventy participants representing scientists, physicians, academics and students from several institutes in Germany and abroad. Seven key note presentations were made at the symposium by experts from Germany, UK, France, Bangladesh and Vietnam. This paper highlights the presentations and discussions during the symposium on different aspects of NCDs in developing countries. The symposium elucidated the dynamics of NCDs in developing countries and invited the participants to learn about evidence-based practices and policies for prevention and management of major NCDs and to debate the way forward.

In the water treatment field, powder form of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) has wide applications in adsorptions. However, its applications are limited because of low hydraulic conductivity. Here, LDH-alginate/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) beads were fabricated by entrapment of the Mg-Al LDH powder into alginate/PVA beads. The obtained Mg-Al LDH-alginate/PVA beads were characterized by X-ray diffraction scanning electron microscopy. Their performance for phosphate removal by batch and column adsorption mode was evaluated. The Mg-Al LDH-alginate/PVA beads were found to be efficient adsorbents for phosphate removal. Batch adsorption experiment showed that the phosphate sorption process on the Mg-Al LDH-alginate/PVA beads followed pseudo-second-order reaction order kinetic model and the adsorption isotherm date could be simulated using both Langmiur and Freundlich models. In the column study, the flow rate and inlet phosphate concentration were maintained at 29.62 m³/m² h and 10 mgP/L, respectively. Using 20 cm column depth, the breakthrough and exhaust time were found to be 5 and 31 h, respectively. The percentage of phosphate removal by column was 80.09%. The values of adsorption rate coefficient (K) and the adsorption capacity coefficient (N) were 0.0125 L/mg h and 258.32 mg/L, respectively.

In this study, development of bioactive coatings containing 1 % (w/v) chitosan (CS), 0.6 % (w/v) diepoxy-polyethylene glycol (PEG), and trans-cinnamaldehyde (CIN) was achieved. The physicochemical and biological properties of the coatings were investigated. The tensile strength, light transmission, water vapor permeability (WVP), and antibacterial properties were enhanced by the incorporation of CIN. The CIN-containing films appeared compact and rough, as observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). In addition, the quality attributes of the bananas were evaluated at room temperature for 24 days, and the results showed that the CS/PEG/CIN coating delayed the respiration peak, weight loss, sugar content loss, and maintained firmness, color, total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acid (TA), and the appearance of the bananas. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that the bioactive coating significantly affected the respiration rate and weight loss of bananas.

The incorporation of ginger oil (GO) influenced the physical, optical, and structural properties of the chitosan (CH) film including the decreases of moisture content (60.15 %), water solubility (35.37 %) and water vapor permeability (WVP) (32.79 %) and the increases of tensile strength (TS) (125 %), elongation at break (EAB) (2.74 %) and opacity (131.08 %). Antifungal capacity of the CH film was enhanced when GO was added to the film. The CH + GO film showed a less homogeneous surface that the presence of the oil droplets on the film surface. Moreover, the CH and CH + GO coatings reduced weight loss of persimmon by 14.87 %, and 21.13 %, respectively, compared to the control. Moisture content loss of the coated CH- and the coated CH + GO- persimmons was decreased by 1.94 % and 4.92 %, respectively, compared to that of the control persimmon. Furthermore, the CH and CH + GO coatings decreased in color changes, respiration rate, ethylene production, changes in pH and TSS, and remained firmness of persimmon during storage at 25 °C. In addition, X-ray CT images can be used to monitor internal changes and observe the tissue breakdown during storage period. The ΔGS value can be used as a predictor of persimmon internal qualities. Thus, the CH film containing GO can be applied as an active packaging material.

The urgent need to mitigate carbon emissions from industrial heat production has led to the exploration of novel carbon-based materials for carbon capture. Chitosan, a versatile framework, has been widely utilized for embedding many materials such as grafted graphene oxide, zeolite, and activated carbon to enhance the carbon capture capacity of diverse carbon-based materials. Remarkably, the combination of chitosan and zeolite overcomes the inherent drawbacks of powdery zeolite, resulting in improved stability and efficiency in carbon capture applications. In this study, zeolite X-chitosan composite was successfully synthesized using phase inversion method followed by solvent exchange and air drying. The synthesis procedure described in this study presents a notable advantage in terms of simplicity and ease of fabrication. The combination of SEM and XRD analyses provided evidence that the composite exhibited a uniform arrangement of zeolite within the chitosan framework and maintained the original properties of the powdered zeolite. The adsorption capacity of the composite was first investigated by varying mass ratio of zeolite per chitosan. The composite with mass ratio that gave the best adsorption capacity were then tested under various temperatures (-20 °C, 0 °C, 30 °C, and 50 °C) and pressures (1 kPa, 3 kPa, 5 kPa, and 30 kPa). The application of different adsorption models was also employed to simulate the breakthrough curves. Furthermore, the material also underwent multiple continuous adsorption-desorption cycles showing its potential for repeated rechargeability. In contrast, the synthesis and characterization of copper ion-exchanged composite yielded significant drop in adsorption capacity, likely due to the formation of ligands or the inherent reactivity of Cu2+ ions towards hydroxide.

Adherence to COPD treatment plays a crucial role in patient health outcomes. Understanding the correlation between treatment adherence and health status is vital for clinicians to develop effective disease management strategies. This study aimed to examine treatment adherence and its impact on the health status of COPD patients, specifically focusing on the effects of adhering to inhaled medications and breathing exercises. A cross-sectional study involving 420 outpatients diagnosed with COPD was conducted. The study encompassed administering questionnaires, observing patient breathing exercises, and measuring ventilatory function. Results showed that only 36.9% of participants adhered to treatment, with 44.7% following inhaler protocols and 36.9% regularly engaging in breathing exercises. The patients who were non-adherent exhibited a 0.3-fold increase in disease severity compared to the adherent group (p = .002). These findings suggest that consistent adherence to treatment, including inhaled medications and breathing exercises, may positively affect health status by reducing disease severity and airway obstruction in COPD patients. To address this, we recommend that home care clinicians implement a post-discharge assessment and intervention program. This program should focus on educating patients about the importance of treatment adherence and promoting behaviors that reinforce adherence to prescribed therapies.

The application of coatings is a strategy for maintaining the freshness of highly perishable fruits. This research aimed to evaluate the quality indices of strawberries (Amaou) coated with new coatings based on the sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and cellulose nanofibres (CNF) with incorporated mandarin peel extract (ME) or 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) during storage at 20days at 5 °C and 85% relative humidity (RH). Dissolving the coating solution containing ME in 1-MCP maintained its colour for up to 50 days. Coatings enhanced with ME and/or 1-MCP maintained fresh strawberries more effectively than the control, reducing weight loss and maintaining firmness, total soluble solids (TSS), citric acid, colour, and total phenolic content. The CCM2-2 coating solution showed superior effects on the weight loss and relative percentages of strawberry metabolites compared to the other coatings, as confirmed by the different components.
