RESUMO

The fabrication of bendable electronic devices is a scientific-technological area of very rapid advance in which new materials and fabrication techniques are being continuously developed. In these kinds of devices, the fabrication of flexible conductive electrodes adherent to the substrate is a key factor. Further, eco-friendliness, low cost and fast production are essential requirements for the successful progress of new technologies. In this work, a novel method for obtaining graphene-based flexible electrodes is presented. Conductive films were obtained by means of the visible laser irradiation of graphene oxide layers deposited on polyethylene terephthalate substrates and self-standing membranes sandwiched between glass slides. Despite the low power of the laser system, the numerical simulations indicate the development of temperatures over 1000 K throughout the irradiated material. The laser-induced spatially confined heating leads to the reduction of the graphene oxide material, whereas the glass-based sandwich assembly avoids reoxidation from the surrounding air. By scanning and pixelated modes, reduced graphene oxide electrodes, up to 100 µm in thickness, and with a resistivity as low as 6 × 10-4 Ωm, were obtained in an easy and versatile way. Proof-of-concept microsupercapacitors and electrochemical sensors were fabricated with this technique, showing promising performance.

RESUMO

AIM: To evaluate the effects of Alimentación Normal con Ajuste de Insulina (ANAIS), a group-based, therapeutic education programme for Type 1 diabetes based on a flexible insulin regimen adjusted to the individual's food intake. METHODS: Participants with Type 1 diabetes and HbA1c levels of 53-86 mmol/mol (7-10%) were recruited from outpatient clinics at a tertiary care centre. They were randomized (using opaque, sealed envelopes, with a 2:1 treatment allocation ratio) to attend the training course immediately (immediate ANAIS; intervention group) or a year later (delayed ANAIS; control group). The main outcome was HbA1c level at 1 year. Secondary outcomes included lipid levels, weight, hypoglycaemic events, insulin dose, treatment satisfaction, self-perceived dietary freedom, quality of life and participant-defined goals. RESULTS: A total of 48 participants were assigned to the intervention group and 32 to the control group. Twelve months after completing the training, adjusted HbA1c was not significantly different in the intervention group [64 ± 1.3 vs 68 ± 1.6 mmol/mol (8.0 ±0.1% vs 8.4 ±0.1%); P=0.081]. Treatment satisfaction was significantly higher in the intervention group, but no differences were found in hypoglycaemic events, weight, insulin dose or changes in dietary freedom. At 1 year after the intervention, 72% of the participants (vs 33% in the control group; P=0.046) reported exceeding their expectations regarding achievement of their main personal goal. CONCLUSION: Promoting dietary freedom and empowering people with Type 1 diabetes through structured education programmes, such as ANAIS, improves treatment satisfaction and self-defined goals. No significant improvement in HbA1c level was achieved.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To describe obstetrical providers' delivery preferences and attitudes towards caesarean section without medical indication, including on maternal request, and to examine the association between provider characteristics and preferences/attitudes. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Two public and two private hospitals in Argentina. POPULATION: Obstetrician-gynaecologists and midwives who provide prenatal care and/or labour/delivery services. METHODS: Providers in hospitals with at least 1000 births per year completed a self-administered, anonymous survey. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Provider delivery preference for low-risk women, perception of women's preferred delivery method, support for a woman's right to choose her delivery method and willingness to perform caesarean section on maternal request. RESULTS: 168 providers participated (89.8% coverage rate). Providers (93.2%) preferred a vaginal delivery for their patients in the absence of a medical indication for caesarean section. Whereas 74.4% of providers supported their patient's right to choose a delivery method in the absence of a medical indication for caesarean section and 66.7% would perform a caesarean section upon maternal request, only 30.4% would consider a non-medically indicated caesarean section for their own personal delivery or that of their partner. In multivariate adjusted analysis, providers in the private sector [odds ratio (OR) 4.70, 95% CI 1.19-18.62] and obstetrician-gynaecologists (OR 4.37, 95% CI 1.58-12.09) were more willing than either providers working in the public/both settings or midwives to perform a caesarean section on maternal request. CONCLUSIONS: Despite the ethical debate surrounding non-medically indicated caesarean sections, we observe very high levels of support, especially by providers in the private sector and obstetrician-gynaecologists, as aligned with the high caesarean section rates in Argentina. TWEETABLE ABSTRACT: Non-medically indicated c-section? 74% of sampled Argentine OB providers support women's right to choose.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is underdiagnosed and public cholesterol screening may be useful to find new subjects. In this study, we aim to investigate the prevalence of FH patients in a hospital screening program and evaluate their atherosclerotic burden using intima-media thickness (IMT). METHODS AND RESULTS: We screened 1575 lipid profiles and included for genetic analysis adults with a low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol >190 mg/dL and triglycerides <200 mg/dL and first-degree child relatives with LDL cholesterol >160 mg/dL and triglycerides <200 mg/dL. The diagnosis of FH was presumed by Dutch Lipid Clinic Network (DLCN) criteria and confirmed by the presence of the genetic variant. Mean common carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) was assessed using consensus criteria. After confirming LDL cholesterol value and excluding secondary hypercholesterolemia, 56 subjects with a DLCN ≥4 performed genetic analysis. Of these, 26 had an FH genetic variant. The proportion of patients with a mutation having a DLCN score of 6-8 was 75%; in individuals with a DLCN score >8 it was 100%. Mean IMT was higher in FH patients compared to non FH (0.73 [0.61-0.83] vs 0.71 [0.60-0.75] mm, p < 0.01). Moreover, we detected two mutations not previously described. Finally, simple regression analysis showed a correlation of IMT with LDL cholesterol >190 mg/dL and corneal arcus (p < 0.01 and p < 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: A hospital screening was useful to detect FH subjects with increased atherosclerosis. Also, next-generation sequencing was able to detect new FH mutations.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is currently considered to raise the risk for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular events. It has been suggested that part of this risk excess may be due to a cluster of additional factors associated with MetS. We aimed to investigate the role of inflammation on the ventricular-vascular coupling in patients with MetS. METHODS AND RESULTS: We enrolled a total of 227 hypertensive patients (106 with MetS and 121 without MetS) matched for age and gender. Aortic pulse wave velocity (aPWV), intima-media thickness (IMT) and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP) increased according to the number of MetS components. Patients with MetS showed increased aPWV (11.5 ± 3.7 vs. 10.3 ± 2.5 m/s, P = 0.03) compared with controls. In a model adjusted for age, sex, heart rate and mean blood pressure, aPWV resulted increased in patients with CKD (beta 1.29 m/s, 95%CI 0.61-1.96 m/s, P < 0.001) and MetS (beta 0.89 m/s, 95%CI 0.28-1.51 m/s, P = 0.005). After additional adjustment for CRP and IMT, the slope of aPWV was respectively reduced by 16% and 62%, suggesting that inflammation and intima-media thickening could contribute to aortic stiffening in patients with MetS. In these patients, aPWV was also associated with left-ventricular mass index (beta 0.79 g/m2.7, 95%CI 0.05-1.52 g/m2.7, P = 0.05). CONCLUSION: MetS is characterized by an inflammation-dependent acceleration in cardiovascular ageing. This pattern of pathophysiological abnormalities may contribute to amplify the burden of cardiovascular risk in patients with MetS.

RESUMO

Carbon nanotubes-transition metal oxide systems are intensively studied due to their excellent properties for electrochemical applications. In this work, an innovative procedure is developed for the synthesis of vertically aligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) coated with transition metal oxide nanostructures. VACNTs are grown by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition and coated with a manganese-based metal organic precursor (MOP) film based on manganese acetate solution. Subsequent UV pulsed laser irradiation induces the effective heating-decomposition of the MOP leading to the crystallization of manganese oxide nanostructures on the VACNT surface. The study of the morphology, structure and composition of the synthesized materials shows the formation of randomly oriented MnO2 crystals, with few nanometers in size, and to their alignment in hundreds of nm long filament-like structures, parallel to the CNT's long axis. Electrochemical measurements reveal a significant increase of the specific capacitance of the MnO2-VACNT system (100 F g-1) as compared to the initial VACNT one (21 F g-1).

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Modern diets are high in advanced glycation end-products (dAGEs), derived from processing methods, exerting a pivotal role in promoting atherosclerotic risk. In this cross-sectional study we investigate the relationship between dAGE intake, arterial stiffness, inflammatory profile and macronutrient composition, in subjects with type 2 diabetes without overt cardiovascular disease. METHODS AND RESULTS: Arterial stiffness, carboxy-methyl-lysine, endogenous secretory receptor for AGEs (esRAGE), high sensitivity C reactive protein (hs-CRP), S100A12 and macronutrient intake were evaluated in 85 subjects with type 2 diabetes. The subjects were stratified into two groups according to dAGE consumption: high and low dAGE intake (≥ or <15.000 kU/day, respectively). Subjects with high dAGE intake (n = 45) showed a higher augmentation, augmentation index and pulse wave velocity (PWV) compared with those subjects with low dAGE intake (18 ± 5.4 vs 12.2 ± 6.3 mmHg, P < 0.05; 38.3 ± 5.4 vs 29.3 ± 10%; 9.2 ± 1.4 m/sec vs 7.9 ± 1.7, P < 0.05, respectively). hs-CRP were higher in subjects with high dAGE intake [0.42 (0.18-0.54) vs 0.21 (0.14-0.52) mg/dL, P < 0.05] whereas esRAGE plasma levels were lower [0.16 (0.23-0.81) vs 0.2 (0.14-0.54) ng/dL, P < 0.05]. Simple regression analysis showed a correlation between dAGEs and fat intake. Multivariate analysis showed an independent association between augmentation, systolic blood pressure (BP) and dAGE consumption; BMI and esRAGE were the major determinants of PWV. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggests that a chronic high dAGE diet could lead to a vascular dysfunction and inflammatory activation, contributing to the development of vascular complications in subjects with type 2 diabetes. Testing this hypothesis may represent a direction of future research.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The question of whether breastfeeding protects the child from obesity is a still debated issue; however, the relationship between early adiposity rebound and higher risk of obesity is well known. This study was aimed at evaluating whether breastfeeding (without formula supplement) during the first 6 months of life delays the time of adiposity rebound and consequently reduces the rates of obesity at the age of 8. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 1812 children born in Gran Canaria in 2004, with follow-up until they were 8 years of age. Anthropometrical data had been taken during routine visits to the doctor and were extracted from medical record databases. Only children with breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life (173 children) and children without breastfeeding (192 children) were included. Children with mixed feeding and children whose data were not available were excluded. RESULTS: No body mass index (BMI) differences were found between children with breastfeeding (17.7) or without breastfeeding (17.3) during the first 6 months of life. The percentages of children with normal weight, overweight and obesity were similar in both groups, as well as the age of adiposity rebound breastfeeding 3.61 years; formula 3.64 years). Early adiposity rebound was associated with increased BMI at the age of 8, both in male and female children. CONCLUSIONS: Breastfeeding during the first 6 months of life was not demonstrated to delay the age of the adiposity rebound, in our study.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) represents the most common chronic liver disease in industrialized countries. NAFLD has the potential to progress through the inflammatory phase of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) to fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Identifying patients at risk for this transition is a relevant clinical challenge. The complexity of these phenotypes in vivo made necessary the development of in vitro models in order to dissect the molecular signalling affected in NAFLD and NASH, but also to identify potential circulating biomarkers. METHODS AND RESULTS: We profiled the expression of 754 cellular and medium-secreted human miRNAs in HepG2 cells after lipotoxic (Palmitate, model of NASH) or not-lipotoxic stimuli (Oleate-Palmitate, model of NAFLD). Results were validated through Single TaqMan assays. We performed computational analysis of miRNA targets and pathways. Oleate-palmitate treatment induced a variation of 2.8% and 10% of total miRNAs in cells and medium, respectively; palmitate treatment caused 10% and 19% intracellular and extracellular miRNA deregulation, respectively. We validated miR-126, miR-150, miR-223, miR-483-3p, miR-1226*, and miR-1290 deregulation. Through computational analysis, we observed that targets of both intracellular and extracellular DE miRNAs were involved in processes associated with the onset and progression of NAFLD and NASH, such as fatty acid metabolism, apoptosis and inflammation. CONCLUSIONS: These data would be useful to elucidate the role of miRNAs in the pathogenesis and progression of the NAFLD spectrum, but they also allow the identification of novel potential biomarkers for differential diagnosis to be tested in vivo.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The use of plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF) has gained importance in many medical fields due to its regenerative potential. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of PRGF on primary skin fibroblasts assessing cell proliferation, migration and secretion of growth factors. The age of the patients from who PRGF was prepared was also studied to determine whether it influenced the outcomes. METHOD: Human dermal fibroblasts were isolated from three healthy volunteers. Using PRGF-Endoret technology, PRGF was prepared from two groups of different ages (18-35 years and 50+ years). The effects of increasing concentration of PRGF (5%, 10% and 20%) on cell proliferation and migration was evaluated. Biosynthetic behaviour of cells was also analysed measuring vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), transforming growth factor b1 (TGFb1) and pro-collagen type I secreted levels with or without PRGF treatment. RESULTS: Mean platelet enrichment reached 2.4X and 2X in 18-35 and 50+ groups respectively. A dose-dependent response was observed in proliferation assays achieving the highest levels with 20% PRGF. Migration was also promoted in cells but not in a dose-dependent manner. Cell proliferation and migration outcomes obtained with PRGF (from both groups) were significantly higher compared to non-stimulated groups (p<0.05), with no statistical significances were observed between the different age groups. Production of VEGF, TGFb and procollagen type I was significantly increased by cells treated with PRGF, however, with the exception of VEGF, no statistical significances were observed between the different age groups. CONCLUSION: Results from this study concluded that PRGF is safe and effective in stimulating skin regeneration by enhancing proliferation, migration and expression of pivotal bioactive molecules involved in wound healing and haemostasis.

RESUMO

AIMS: The study aimed to evaluate the effects of probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 strain supplementation in patients suffering from systemic nickel allergy syndrome, in terms of modulation of faecal LAB population linked to a reduction of GI and cutaneous symptoms and to an increase of patient's quality of life. METHODS AND RESULTS: A preliminary double-blind randomized placebo-controlled study was planned and a culture-independent method based on denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis coupled to the 16S rRNA gene sequencing was applied to investigate on the dynamics of faecal LAB communities before and during a low-Ni diet, supplemented with the probiotic strain. Moreover, the severity and the frequency of GI and cutaneous reactions as well as patient's clinical condition perception (VAS scores) were estimated by statistical analysis. PCR-DGGE fingerprinting obtained using LAB-specific primers revealed significant shift in faecal community with an increase in biodiversity in patients supplemented with probiotic Lact. reuteri strain. In addition, GI reactions such as symptoms related to meals and type of stools significantly improved only in patients treated with Lact. reuteri, while severity and frequency of cutaneous symptoms (urticaria, itch and eczema) and recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) as well as VAS scores statistically decreased in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Our preliminary findings suggest that probiotic Lact. reuteri could be a useful supplementation during a low-Ni diet of patients with SNAS, to increase LAB population diversity, which could contribute to restore the intestinal homoeostasis conditions. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: To date, no information is available on probiotics application and on their effects, in terms of intestinal microbiota modulation, on patients suffering from SNAS. Therefore, the identification of dominant LAB community and the study of its shift during the probiotic supplementation could enhance the knowledge of the SNAS syndrome.

RESUMO

In the present study 177 Lactobacillus spp. strains, isolated from Ragusano and Pecorino Siciliano cheeses, were in vitro screened for probiotic traits, and their characteristics were compared to those of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, commercial strain. Based on acidic and bile salt resistance, thirteen Lactobacillus strains were selected. The multiplex-PCR application revealed that nine strains belonged to L. rhamnosus species and four to Lactobacillus paracasei species. All selected strains were further investigated for transit tolerance in simulated upper gastrointestinal tract (GI), for adhesion capacity to human intestinal cell lines, for hydrophobicity, for co-aggregation and auto-aggregation and for antimicrobial activities. Moreover, antibiotic resistance, hemolytic and bile salt hydrolase activities were investigated for safety assessment. Viable counts after simulated gastric and duodenal transit revealed that overall the selected lactobacilli tolerated better pancreatic juice and bile salts than acidic juice. In particular, three L. rhamnosus strains (FS10, FS2, and PS11) and one L. paracasei strain (PM8) increased their cell density after the simulated GI transit. The same strains showed also high percentage of auto-aggregation and co-aggregation with Escherichia coli. All strains were effective against both Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli and variability was achieved versus Listeria monocytogenes and Enterococcus faecalis used as pathogenic indicator strains. Different behavior was revealed by strains for adhesion ability and hydrophobicity, which are not always linked each other and are strongly strain-dependent. From the safety point of view, no isolate showed hemolytic and bile salt hydrolase activities, except one, and most of the strains were sensitive to a broad range of clinical antibiotics. This work showed that the L. rhamnosus FS10 and the L. paracasei PM8 are good promising probiotic candidates for further in vivo investigations.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: We aimed to investigate lipid abnormalities and liver steatosis in patients with HbA1c-defined prediabetes and type 2 diabetes compared to individuals with HbA1c-defined normoglycaemia. METHODS AND RESULTS: Ninety-one subjects with prediabetes according to HbA1c, i.e. from 5.7 to 6.4% (39-46 mmol/mol), 50 newly diagnosed patients with HbA1c-defined type 2 diabetes (HbA1c ≥6.5% [≥48 mmol/mol]), and 67 controls with HbA1c lower than 5.7% (<39 mmol/mol), were studied. Fasting blood samples for lipid profiles, fatty liver index (FLI), bioimpedance analysis, ultrasound scan of the liver, and BARD (body mass index, aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase ratio, diabetes) score for evaluation of liver fibrosis, were performed in all subjects. In comparison to controls, subjects with prediabetes were characterised by: lower apolipoprotein AI and HDL cholesterol levels, higher blood pressure, triglycerides levels and apolipoprotein B/apolipoprotein AI ratio, higher FLI, increased prevalence of and more severe hepatic steatosis, similar BARD score, and higher total body fat mass. In comparison to subjects with diabetes, subjects with prediabetes exhibited: similar blood pressure and apolipoprotein B/apolipoprotein AI ratio, similar FLI, reduced prevalence of and less severe hepatic steatosis, lower BARD score, increased percent fat and lower total body muscle mass. In comparison to controls, subjects with diabetes showed: lower apolipoprotein AI and HDL cholesterol levels, higher blood pressure and triglycerides levels, higher FLI, increased prevalence of and more severe hepatic steatosis, higher BARD score, and higher total body muscle mass. Moreover, HbA1c was correlated with BMI, HOMA-IR, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, AST, and ALT. CONCLUSIONS: Subjects with HbA1c-defined prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, respectively, are characterised by abnormalities in lipid profile and liver steatosis, thus exhibiting a severe risk profile for cardiovascular and liver diseases.

RESUMO

Several epidemiological studies showed that gestational diabetes mellitus is the most frequent metabolic disorder of pregnancy, the pathogenesis of which has yet to be completely clarified. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence and processing of caspase 3 (Casp3) and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase 1 (PARP1) in cord blood lymphocytes as markers of apoptosis in relation to glycaemic control during intrauterine life. Our results showed a specific positive correlation between the levels of active Casp3 (17-19 kDa) and the inactive form of PARP1 (89 kDa) in lymphocytes isolated from newborn babies of diabetic women with unbalanced glycaemic control, with a direct correlation between the activation of casp3 and the inactivation of PARP1, that makes lymphocytes unresponsive towards lipopolysaccharide stimulation, highlighting an altered functional response. Besides more studies are required to fully correlate the activation of the apoptotic process during the intrauterine life with the foetal health later in life, our study indicates that a cord blood lymphocyte, an easily accessible source, is informative about the activation of apoptotic stimuli in circulating cells of newborn babies in relation to the glycaemic control reached by the mother during pregnancy.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Subcutaneous catheter is a device easy to assemble, which was created for the administration of insulin in diabetic patients, especially in children, aiming to reduce the number of punctures, pain and anxiety of patients and their parents. OBJECTIVE: To describe the experience using the catheter for subcutaneous administration of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) in hospitalized pediatric patients. PATIENTS AND METHOD: A prospective descriptive study in 28 patients who used 87 subcutaneous catheters for the administration of LMWH in the Pediatric Service of the Universidad Catolica de Chile between July, 2010 and November, 2011. RESULTS: Complications associated with the catheter had an incidence of 33 % in total catheters evaluated; the most frequent complication was the presence of hematoma at the site of insertion (26%). These complications occurred more frequently in male (38% versus 31% in females) and younger patients (9 months versus 12 months), who received dalteparin (54% versus 30% of other types of heparin) administered every 24 hours (41% versus 30%, administered every 12 hours), and when the catheter was located on both thighs (36 % versus 32% in both arms); however, these differences were not statistically confirmed. CONCLUSION: The subcutaneous catheter is a good technique to be considered for LMWH in children as it presents minor complications for drug administration.

RESUMO

GOAL: The present study aimed to investigate the behavior of dynamic electrical impedance myography (dEIM) signals during a 100-s period of the dynamic contraction of Wistar rats' gastrocnemius evoked by electrical stimulation and to link the variations in bioimpedance with muscular energy systems. METHODS: Muscle contraction used 30% of the maximum muscular force and persisted for 100 s, along which dynamic bioimpedance signals were acquired. Based on the bioimpedance signals, two parameters, ΔZc and ΔZpc, were calculated to allow the analysis of their changes with the energy systems that supplied adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to the muscle. ΔZc indicated the variation of impedance of a twitch cycle compared to the values observed during the rest period preceding the cycle, and ΔZpc indicated slow bioimpedance variations compared to the values obtained during the rest period. RESULTS: The results indicated that ΔZc followed the force behavior, achieving a change rate of ∼14%. This parameter was associated with instantaneous impedance changes owing to the occurrence of each twitch. CONCLUSION: Although the findings of this study were linked to energy system processes, future studies are required for improving the understanding of the underlying mechanisms involved in dEIM. SIGNIFICANCE: The results contributed to understanding the relation of energy systems that supply ATP to the muscles with dEIM variations that occurred during muscle activity.

RESUMO

Hybrid layers consisting of Fe oxide, Fe hydroxide, and nitrogen doped graphene-like platelets have been synthesized by an eco-friendly laser-based method for photocatalytic applications. The complex composite layers show high photodecomposition efficiency towards degradation of antibiotic molecules under visible light irradiation. The photodecomposition efficiency was investigated as a function of relative concentrations of base materials, Fe oxide nanoparticles and graphene oxide platelets used for the preparation of target dispersions submitted to laser irradiation. Although reference pure Fe oxide/Fe hydroxide layers have high absorption in the visible spectral region, their photodecomposition efficiency is negligible under the same irradiation conditions. The high photocatalytic decomposition efficiency of the nanohybrid layer, up to 80% of the initial antibiotic molecules was assigned to synergistic effects between the constituent materials, efficient separation of the electron-hole pairs generated by visible light irradiation on the surface of Fe oxide and Fe hydroxide nanoparticles, in the presence of conducting graphene-like platelets. Nitrogen doped graphene-like platelets contribute also to the generation of electron-hole pairs under visible light irradiation, as demonstrated by the photocatalytic activity of pure, reference nitrogen doped graphene-like layers. The results also showed that adsorption processes do not contribute significantly to the removal of antibiotic molecules from the test solutions. The decrease of the antibiotic concentration under visible light irradiation was assigned primarily to photocatalytic decomposition mechanisms.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Among the most effective therapeutic interventions in non-specific chronic low back pain (NSCLBP), clinical practice guidelines highlight exercise therapy and patient education; However, regarding the combined intervention of exercise and Pain Neuroscience Education (PNE), there is no consensus on the most effective form of exercise. OBJETIVE: To find out what changes occurred after the application of two exercise modalities [Supervised Exercise (SE) and Laser-Guided Exercise (LGE)] and PNE on pain, pain pressure thresholds, disability, catastrophizing, kinesiophobia and lumbar proprioception in subjects with NSCLBP. METHODS: Single-blind randomized clinical controlled trial. 60 subjects with NSCLBP. Both groups performed a a total of 16 therapeutic exercise sessions and 8 Pain Neuroscience Education sessions. With the Laser-Guided Exercise Therapy group performing laser-guided exercises. RESULTS: A significant decrease was observed for pain intensity for both groups between baseline and post-intervention and the 3 month follow-up (p < 0.001). There was a significant between-group difference between baseline and post-intervention scores in terms of pain intensity and kinesiophobia in favour of the LGE group. CONCLUSION: Supervised exercise with or without laser feedback, when combined with PNE, reduces pain intensity, disability, pain catastrophizing, kinesiophobia and improves proprioception and PPTs in patients with NSCLBP. At a 3-month follow-up, the combination of LGE plus PNE is most effective for reducing pain intensity.

RESUMO

This review focuses specifically on the diagnostic value of T2-weighted imaging in the assessment of Crohn's disease (CD) inflammation. In general, T2-weighted imaging has been less extensively investigated than T1-weighted gadolinium-enhanced imaging, even if it may offer similar information on disease activity. Furthermore, T2-weighted imaging allows CD characterization, which is crucial in the management of the disease when differentiating intestinal edema from fibrosis. Technical aspects, morphological findings and signs of active intestinal inflammation and fibrosis detectable on T2-weighted images will be reviewed and shown. Correlation between T2-weighted imaging findings, clinical activity indexes and histopathology features will be discussed. Since T2-weighted imaging is essential in the evaluation of CD activity, it should always complement with T1-weighted imaging, although it could also be used alone in the assessment of CD.

RESUMO

Sludge generation from wastewater treatment plants in Uruguay has increased in recent years. Agricultural soils may be a final destination. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to quantify the effect of this sludge on 1) plant biomass production and nutrient concentration of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor var. vulgare); 2) the chemical properties of amended soils; and 3) assess whether heavy metal concentrations in sludge are appropriate according to environmental regulations. Two soils (S1 and S2) were amended with pure sludge (PS) and limed sludge (LS), with low dose (LD) of 16.0 and 17.3 Mg ha-1 and high dose (HD) of 32.0 and 34.6 Mg ha-1, respectively. Sludge treatments increased plants' nutrient absorption and dry matter production. The LS treatments incremented plant biomass production, depending on soil pH and nutrient availability. The effect of sludge treatments on elemental concentration in aboveground biomass depended on the element, treatments, and soil type. Mineralized nitrogen (N) and plant available phosphorus (P-Bray 1) values increased with sludge addition without exceeding Uruguay's critical soil level of P-Bray 1 for the sorghum crop. The PS did not increase metal concentration in soils. The LS slightly decreased soil Pb and slightly increased Cr and Zn soil concentration; levels were according to Uruguayan environmental guidelines. Therefore, agriculture soils are a viable final destination for PS and LS. Land applied sludge has acceptable levels of metals and promotes crop development.
