RESUMO

A clear structure-property relationship was revealed in a series of triphenylene-based dimers, which contained two triphenylene nuclei each bearing five ß-OC4H9 substituents and are linked through a flexible O(CH2)nO polymethylene chain (n=6-12). Dimers with the linkage close to twice the length of the free side chains (n=8, 9) exhibited a single Colhp phase, while others with the linkage shorter (n=6, 7) or longer (n=10, 11, 12) showed multiphase behaviors with a transition from the Colhp phase to Colh phase; hole mobilities of Colhp phases reached 1.4×10(-2) cm2 V(-1) s(-1) in the dimer for which the linkage is exactly twice the length of the free side chains (n=8), and decreased regularly both with linkage length becoming shorter or longer. This modulation of phase behaviors and charge carrier mobilities was demonstrated to be generated by various steric perturbations introduced by linkages with different lengths, which result in different degrees of lateral fluctuations of discotic moieties in the columns.

A series of dibenzocoronene tetracarboxdiimide derivatives decorated with alkyl swallow-tail and alkoxy moieties were synthesized, and their structures were characterized. 2,3-Dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) as an effective oxidant was first used in the benzannulation of perylene diimides with the almost quantitative yield. The thermotropic behavior was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarization optical microscopy (POM). The introduction of alkyl swallow-tail and alkoxy substituents facilitates thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior. The branching site of alkyl swallow-tail units at the α position and the longer alkoxy chains played a similar role in lowering the mesophase transition as well as isotropization transition temperatures. The UV-vis absorption spectra of all compounds appeared as absorption in 425-600 nm region, and POM images of certain compounds exhibited characteristic columnar hexagonal (Col(h)) packing and readily self-assembled into a homeotropic alignment toward the substrate.

The search for an effective zinc fertilizer and its application method to effectively increase zinc content and enhance aroma in rice grains is a crucial objective. In this study, a 2-year field plot experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of ZnO NPs foliar spraying on rice quality, grain zinc and aroma content, along with exploring the physiological mechanisms underlying these effects. Our results demonstrated that the rice breakdown value and taste value of foliar spraying zinc oxide nanoparticles were improved by 31.0-41.7% and 8.2-13.0% compared with CK (control treatment involved spraying water), improving the tasting and steaming quality of rice. While Fe and Cu content in grains decreased for the application of zinc oxide nanoparticles, zinc oxide nanoparticles foliar spraying significantly increased the zinc content and accumulation of grains by 33.6-65.1% and 37.8-74.7%, respectively. Further analysis showed that the sprayed zinc oxide nanoparticles achieved effective enrichment of zinc in edible parts and increased the final bioavailability of Zn. In addition, foliar spraying of zinc oxide nanoparticles significantly increased activities of nitrate reductase and glutamine synthetase in leaves, which elevated nitrogen content in leaves and grains, and ultimately enhanced 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline (2-AP) content in grains at maturity by 6.1-21.4% compared to CK. Our findings indicated that zinc oxide nanoparticles can be practically applied as a foliar fertilizer at the gestation for quality improvement, zinc enrichment and aroma enhancement of rice grains.

RESUMO

A HBC derivative bearing six branched, space-demanding, alkyl side chains containing ether linkages has been synthesized and its thermotropic properties were investigated by polarization optical microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). To our surprise, this molecule can respond to electric fields, and the influences of alternating current (AC) and directing current (DC) electric field on the assembly of this molecule in liquid crystal cells were discussed.

A synthetic route towards symmetric and asymmetric thiophenoazomethines was accomplished by reaction of the readily available amine with various aldehydes. Investigation of a series of thiophenoazomethines obtained by this method indicates that the terminal groups and the degree of conjugation have a great effect on the electronic absorption and energy levels of the conjugated compounds, particularly the effect of terminal groups. The terminal withdrawing and donating groups of thiophenoazomethines led to the formation of an electronic push-pull, push-push and pull-pull system, which can perturb the electronic transitions between the ground and excited states. The flexible chain substituents on the thiophene units, which improve its solubility, also result in bathochromic absorption, but have limited effect on the energy level.

A series of discotic liquid crystals based on hexapentyloxytriphenylene (HAT5) have been investigated where one out of the six ether side chains of a triphenylene core was replaced by an ester side chain and named for 5a-5h. During the process of studying these compounds, the characteristic straight line defect of ordered columnar structure was identified by polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and liquid crystal state over a wide temperature range was obtained by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Basic phase structure and molecular arrangement were assigned by one-dimensional wide-angle X-ray diffraction (1D WAXD), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), two-dimensional wide-angle X-ray diffraction (2D WAXD), and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Combined with sharp and regular dots in 2D WAXD patterns and characteristic peaks at small angle in SAXS pattern which indicated the existence of superlattice, we proved that 2D superlattice formed from self-assembly of discotic molecules with a polar group via π-π stacking and dipole-dipole interaction. In order to verify the effect of orientation on charge carrier mobility, their electron and hole mobilities were measured by time-of-flight (TOF) device, among which the charge carrier mobility could achieve almost twice as that of HAT5. The formation of superlattice no doubt improved their electronic properties and made them more attractive in organic electronics.
