RESUMO

Leggett inequality states that nonlocal hidden-variable models might still be incompatible with the predictions of quantum physics. However, its theoretical and experimental demonstration is only in the scenario of 2-dimensional maximally entangled systems. An open question remains as to whether the Leggett inequality can be violated by nonmaximally entangled states. Here, we answer this question both in theory and experiment. Specifically, from the point of view of geometry, we theoretically map the problem of maximizing the correlation measure in the Leggett inequality to maximizing the sum of an ellipse's diameter and semi-diameter axes, accordingly, demonstrating that the violation of the Leggett inequality requires a more robust entanglement than that of Bell's theory. Experimentally, by leveraging the controllable photonic orbital angular momentum entanglement, we demonstrate the violation of Leggett-type inequalities by more than 8.7 and 4.5 standard deviations under concurrence C = 0.95 and 0.9, respectively. Our observations indicate that, the requirement for quantum correlation should be increased to exclude a particular class of non-local hidden variable theories that abide by Leggett's model, providing insights into the boundaries of quantum correlation and the limitations imposed by non-local hidden variables.

RESUMO

Analogous to the regular lens, which spatially maps plane waves in the space domain to distinct points in the Fourier domain, the angular lens establishes the mapping relations between an angular mode and angular position, thus providing an effective toolkit for detecting an optical vortex. However, using the angular lens to sort infrared optical vortex modes via nonlinear optical processes remains relatively unexplored. Here, we design a nonlinear optical version of the angular lens to map the various infrared optical vortex modes to different angular positions in the visible region. We successfully sort nine infrared optical vortex modes of different topological charges with a visible camera, showing the cost-effective ability to sort infrared vortices compared to a relatively expensive infrared camera. Our scheme holds promise for infrared remote sensing, infrared vortex-encoded optical communications, and so on.

RESUMO

Recent years have witnessed a growing research interest in the rotational Doppler effect associated with orbital angular momentum of light, emerging as a powerful tool to detect rotating bodies in remote sensing. However, this method, when exposed to the turbulence in a realistic environment, has some severe limitations, leading to the unrecognizable rotational Doppler signals overwhelmed in background noise. Here we put forward a concise yet efficient method that enables the turbulence-resilient detection of the rotational Doppler effect with cylindrical vector beams. Specifically, by adopting the polarization-encoded dual-channel detection system, the low-frequency noises caused by turbulence can be individually extracted and subtracted, and thus mitigate the effect of turbulence. We demonstrate our scheme by conducting proof-of-principle experiments, whose results manifest the feasibility of a practical sensor to detect the rotating bodies in non-laboratory conditions.

RESUMO

Isocyanides are well-known as efficient CO surrogates and C1 synthons in modern organic synthesis. Although tremendous efforts have been devoted to fully exploiting the reactivity of isocyanides, these transformations are primarily limited by their utilization of stoichiometric toxic chemical oxidants. With the recent resurgence of organic electrochemistry, which has considerably laid dormant over the past several decades, electrolysis has been identified as a green and powerful tool to enrich structural diversity by solely utilizing electric current as clean and inherently safe redox equivalents of stoichiometric chemical oxidants. In this regard, the unique reactivity of isocyanides has been studied in numerous electrochemical transformations. This review comprehensively highlights the most relevant progress in electrochemical strategies towards the functionalization of isocyanides up until June of 2022, with a focus on reaction outcomes and mechanisms.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Surgery is the preferred treatment option for the elderly patients with hip fractures. However, the choice of general anesthesia (GA) or regional anesthesia (RA) remains controversial. The quality of evidence has further improved with the advent of several high-quality randomized clinical trials (RCTs) in the last two years. The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical outcomes of two anesthetic techniques in elderly patients undergoing hip fracture surgeries. METHODS: Eligible studies were identified from PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, EMBASE and reference lists from January 2000 to June 2022 in this current systematic review and meta-analysis. The outcomes included the surgery-related outcomes (duration of surgery, duration of anesthesia, intraoperative blood loss and number of transfusions) and postoperative outcomes (30-day mortality, postoperative delirium, cardiovascular events and other complications). RESULTS: A total of 10 RCTs were included, and a total of 3594 patients were analyzed. RA was associated with shorter duration of surgery, shorter length of hospital stays and less intraoperative blood loss compared to GA. There were no significant differences between the two groups in the number of blood transfusions, duration of anesthesia, 30-day mortality or postoperative delirium. CONCLUSIONS: Our pooled analysis identified no significant differences in terms of the safety between RA and GA, while RA reduces intraoperative blood loss, length of hospital stays and duration of surgery. These results suggest that RA appears to be preferable for the elderly patients with hip fractures.

RESUMO

Recently, it has been demonstrated that a nonlinear spatial filter using second harmonic generation can implement a visible edge enhancement under invisible illumination, and it provides a promising application in biological imaging with light-sensitive specimens. But with this nonlinear spatial filter, all phase or intensity edges of a sample are highlighted isotropically, independent of their local directions. Here we propose a vectorial one to cover this shortage. Our vectorial nonlinear spatial filter uses two cascaded nonlinear crystals with orthogonal optical axes to produce superposed nonlinear vortex filtering. We show that with the control of the polarization of the invisible illumination, one can highlight the features of the samples in special directions visually. Moreover, we find the intensity of the sample arm can be weaker by two orders of magnitude than the filter arm. This striking feature may offer a practical application in biological imaging or microscopy, since the light field reflected from the sample is always weak. Our work offers an interesting way to see and emphasize the different directions of edges or contours of phase and intensity objects with the polarization control of the invisible illumination.

RESUMO

While linear or angular position and momentum can be linked by a continuous or discrete Fourier transform, there are some subtle problems in the analogous Fourier relationship between radial position and radial momentum in history. Here we exploit radial position and newly introduced radial momentum variables to report a radial version of light's diffraction. The mask with single or multiple radial slits confines the light to a radial transmission function. As a result, in the radial momentum state space, we can observe the diffraction sidebands generated on the transmitted light due to a transverse restriction of the radial range. Our experimental results clearly reveal the intriguing diffraction behaviors between radial position and radial momentum variables at the single-photon level, making them another candidate for fundamental tests of quantum mechanics and for a variety of quantum information applications.

RESUMO

Optical vortices, carrying quantized orbital angular momentum (OAM) states, have been widely investigated because of their promising applications in both classical and quantum realms. Among these applications, efficient generation and measurement of OAM beams are critical. Current techniques available for generating OAM beams generally suffer from bulky size, low operation efficiency, or single-function or complicated fabrication processes. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate an approach to generate arbitrary optical vortices with a chip-scale device based on all-dielectric two-dimensional (2D) polarization-independent metasurface grating. Based on multi-beam interference in principle and nanofabrication techniques for implementation, our device allows efficient and simultaneous on-chip generation of multi-channel beams with different OAM. We further demonstrate that our device can also work reversely in detecting the OAM spectrum of various pure and mixed optical vortices (e.g., fractional OAM orders) with low crosstalk. Our scheme may find potential applications in developing new integrated photonics for OAM-based high-dimensional quantum information processing in future quantum network.

RESUMO

We demonstrate a new method to detect infrared optical vortex arrays efficiently, which is based on simultaneous up-conversion imaging and spiral phase contrast via second-harmonic generation (SHG) in the Fourier domain. In our experiment, we use a spatial light modulator to prepare a variety of 1064 nm structured vortex arrays and employ a vortex phase plate of different topological charges to serve as the nonlinear orbital angular momentum (OAM) filter. The SHG is done by mixing the Fourier spectra of input-structured vortices with a single OAM beam in a type-II potassium titanyl phosphate crystal. Then we can convert the input invisible vortex arrays into the visible SHG light fields, and the vortex cores are mapped and seen by bright Gaussian spots, revealing both their positions and topological charges. Our work has potential in the field of infrared imaging and monitoring.

RESUMO

We report a new scheme of ghost imaging by using a spatially structured pump in the Fourier domain of spontaneous parametric down-conversion for quantum-correlation-based pattern recognition. We exploit the mathematical feature of Laguerre-Gaussian mode's Fourier transform to describe the pump-modulated formation of a ghost image. Of particular interest is the experimental demonstration of a quantum equivalence of a Vander Lugt filter, based on which the nonlocal spiral phase contrast for vortex mapping and quantum-correlation-based human face recognition are implemented successfully. The photons used for probing a test object, scanning the database, and producing a correlation signal can belong to three different light beams, which suggests some security applications where low-light-level illumination and covert operation are desired.

RESUMO

As is well known, angular position and orbital angular momentum (OAM) of photons are a conjugate pair of variables that have been extensively explored for quantum information science and technology. In contrast, the radial degrees of freedom remain relatively unexplored. Here we exploit the radial variables, i.e., radial position and radial momentum, to demonstrate Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations between down-converted photons. In our experiment, we prepare various annular apertures to define the radial positions and use eigenmode projection to measure the radial momenta. The resulting correlations are found to violate the Heisenberg-like uncertainty principle for independent particles, thus manifesting the entangled feature in the radial structure of two-photon wave functions. Our work suggests that, in parallel with angular position and OAM, the radial position and radial momentum can offer a new platform for a fundamental test of quantum mechanics and for novel application of quantum information.

RESUMO

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a potentially irreversible acute cognitive dysfunction with unclear mechanism. Striatal-enriched protein tyrosine phosphatase (STEP) is a brain-specific phosphatase which normally opposes synaptic strengthening by regulating key signaling molecules involved in synaptic plasticity and neuronal function. Thus, we hypothesized that abnormal STEP signaling pathway was involved in sepsis-induced cognitive impairment evoked by lipopolysaccharides (LPS) injection. The levels of STEP, phosphorylation of GluN2B (pGluN2B), the kinases extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (pERK), cAMP-response element binding protein (CREB), synaptophysin, brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and post-synaptic density protein 95 (PSD95) in the hippocampus, prefrontal cortex, and striatum were determined at the indicated time points. In the present study, we found that STEP levels were significantly increased in the hippocampus, prefrontal cortex, and striatum following LPS injection, which might resulted from the disruption of the ubiquitin-proteasome system. Notably, a STEP inhibitor TC-2153 treatment alleviated sepsis-induced memory impairment by increasing phosphorylation of GluN2B and ERK1/2, CREB/BDNF, and PSD95. In summary, our results support the key role of STEP in sepsis-induced memory impairment in a mouse model of SAE, whereas inhibition of STEP may provide a novel therapeutic approach for this disorder and possible other neurodegenerative diseases.

RESUMO

Naturally occurring ß-carbolines are known to have antitumor activities but with limited effectiveness. In order to improve their efficacy, a series of new hydroxamic-acid-containing ß-carbolines connected via a hydroxycinnamic acid moitey (12a-f) were developed to incorporate histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibition for possible synergistic effects. When evaluated in in vitro assays, most of the analogues showed significant antitumor activities against four human cancer cells. In particular, 12b showed the highest cytotoxic potency of the series, including drug-resistant Bel7402 cells, but had minimal effect on normal hepatic LO2 cells. These compounds also showed excellent inhibitory effects against HDAC1/6, which appear to contribute greatly to their antiproliferative properties. Compound 12b enhanced the acetylation levels of histone H3 and α-tubulin and induced greater cancer cell apoptosis than the FDA-approved HDAC inhibitor SAHA by regulating expression of apoptotic proteins Bax, Bcl-2, and caspase 3. Importantly, 12b also induced a significant amount of autophagic flux activity in Bel7402 cells by increasing the expression of Beclin-1 and LC3-II proteins and decreasing that of LC3-I and p62. Finally, 12b significantly inhibited PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling, an important cell-growth-promoting pathway aberrantly activated in many cancers. Together, the results suggest that these hydroxamic-acid-containing ß-carboline derivatives may be new leads for the discovery of agents for the treatment of human carcinoma cancers.

RESUMO

Rhodium-catalyzed C7-selective decarbonylative arylation, olefination, and methylation of indoles with carboxylic acids or anhydrides by C-H and C-C bond activation have been developed. Furthermore, C7-acylation products can also be generated selectively at a lower reaction temperature in the developed system. The key to the high reactivity and regioselectivity of this transformation is the appropriate choice of an indole N-PtBu2 chelation-assisted group. This method has many advantages, including easy access and removal of the directing group, the use of cheap and widely available coupling agents, no requirement of an external ligand or oxidant, a broad substrate scope, high efficiency, and the formation of a sole regioisomer.

RESUMO

We report a concise yet efficient experiment to extend the study of full Poincaré beams to incorporate the nonlinear optical effect. The main feature of our scheme is the employment of Type-II phase-matching KTP crystal to implement the second harmonic generation with structured vector light from invisible to visible region. Of particular interest is the revelation and visualization of the hidden topological structures transferred from the input polarization state to the output observable intensity patterns. The experimental results are in good agreement with the numerical simulations. Our present work provides us with the insight into the interaction of full Poincaré beams with media in the nonlinear regime.

RESUMO

The Imbert-Fedorov (IF) shift is defined as the transverse shift of barycenter of the entire beam when a circular or elliptically polarized incident beam is reflected. In this work, we examine the IF shift of Gaussian beam at the Brewster angle. Interestingly, the spin Hall effect of light takes place in the IF shift at the same time. Furthermore, this interesting phenomenon is experimentally observed using weak measurements. These findings may have useful applications in spin optics.

RESUMO

In this paper, a method to improve the precision of prism-coupler-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors using weak-value amplification (WVA) is presented. A general theory model to describe the post-selected SPR sensing system is established and the polarization-dependent amplitude and phase evolutions induced by the SPR are regarded as the weak interactions in the WVA formalism. As a consequence of WVA, the detected signal can be enhanced with respect to the technical noise which is dependent on the post-selected light intensity. The precision of our method reaches 2.9 × 10-7RIU, which is improved nearly one order of magnitude compared to the conventional sensing technique.

RESUMO

Modification of commercially available monophosphine ligands with either aryl bromides or chlorides by rhodium(I)-catalyzed, tertiary phosphine directed C-H activation is described. A series of ligand libraries containing mono- and diaryl-substituted groups, having different steric and electronic properties, were obtained in high yields. Based on the outstanding properties of their parent scaffolds, the modified ligands have been found to be powerful in organic reactions.

RESUMO

In the past decade, direct C-H arylation of indoles has been developed with high selectivity at the C2 and C3 positions via transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. Here we show that C-H activation can be directed to the C7 position with high selectivity in Pd-catalyzed coupling of indoles with arylboronic acids. The key to this high regioselectivity is the appropriate choice of a phosphinoyl directing group and a pyridine-type ligand in the presence of Pd(OAc)2 catalyst. This previously elusive transformation should provide insight for the design of other cross-couplings as well.

RESUMO

A methodology for calibration-free wavelength modulation spectroscopy (CF-WMS) that is based upon an extensive empirical description of the wavelength-modulation frequency response (WMFR) of DFB laser is presented. An assessment of the WMFR of a DFB laser by the use of an etalon confirms that it consists of two parts: a 1st harmonic component with an amplitude that is linear with the sweep and a nonlinear 2nd harmonic component with a constant amplitude. Simulations show that, among the various factors that affect the line shape of a background-subtracted peak-normalized 2f signal, such as concentration, phase shifts between intensity modulation and frequency modulation, and WMFR, only the last factor has a decisive impact. Based on this and to avoid the impractical use of an etalon, a novel method to pre-determine the parameters of the WMFR by fitting to a background-subtracted peak-normalized 2f signal has been developed. The accuracy of the new scheme to determine the WMFR is demonstrated and compared with that of conventional methods in CF-WMS by detection of trace acetylene. The results show that the new method provides a four times smaller fitting error than the conventional methods and retrieves concentration more accurately.
