RESUMO

Islet cell transplantation has emerged as a treatment modality for type 1 diabetes in the last 15 years due to the Edmonton protocol leading to consistent and sustained exogenous insulin independence post-transplantation. In recent years, consortia that involve both local and remote islet cell centers have been established, with local centers responsible for processing and shipping of islet cells, and remote centers only transplanting them. There are, however, few data on patient outcomes at remote centers. A tendency for high fasting glucose despite insulin independence was noted by us and others with an unknown mechanism. This review provides a brief history of islet cell transplantation, and focuses on the South Australian remote center experience: the challenges, screening criteria, and the impact on incretin hormone secretion of insulin independent transplant patients.

RESUMO

The most abundant polar impurities detected by ion-pair high-pressure liquid chromatography of sodium saccharin produced by the Maumee process were identified as 5- and 6-aminosaccharin. The combined levels of these compounds in the samples analysed ranged from 99 to 152 mg/kg. Other less abundant polar impurities identified in Maumee process sodium saccharin were 7-aminosaccharin and o-sulphamoylbenzoic acid. Mutagenicity assays of 5-aminosaccharin, 6-aminosaccharin and a polar impurity fraction isolated from Maumee saccharin, gave negative results.

RESUMO

People tend to get most of their information beyond work and family horizons from the press, radio, and television. So, do they really believe media stories that suggest, for example, there is no link between HIV and AIDS? This is unlikely, but there is a curious paradox--namely, that the same time, people to varying degrees are open minded about such stories as unidentified flying objects, astrology, reincarnation, and alien abduction. Yet, people are discerning and seem able to spot the dangerous rubbish, happy to be entertained and unlikely to be misled by the things that will really alter their lives.

RESUMO

What does modern science tell people? That life is ultimately DNA, and DNA is genes, and genes are just so many bits of Lego, little building blocks manipulated by Nature for 3.8 thousand billion years, rather economically, so that much the same genes pop up in a nematode worm, a fruit fly, a lettuce, and a thriller writer. And that genes can be transferred from one species, or genus, or phylum, or even one kingdom to another. That is why there is unease, and newspapers reflect that unease, they do not create it. By helping people confront that unease, they probably help people come to terms with it. In the course of history, people have felt pretty uneasy about blood transfusion, heart transplants, test tube babies, and AIDS, and over the years, have calmed down considerably about each, to the advantage of both society and science. It will be the same for the human genome project, in a while.
