RESUMO

We report the first observation of two wobbling bands in ^{183}Au, both of which were interpreted as the transverse wobbling (TW) band but with different behavior of their wobbling energies as a function of spin. It increases (decreases) with spin for the positive (negative) parity configuration. The crucial evidence for the wobbling nature of the bands, dominance of the E2 component in the ΔI=1 transitions between the partner bands, is provided by the simultaneous measurements of directional correlation from the oriented states ratio and the linear polarization of the γ rays. Particle rotor model calculations with triaxial deformation reproduce the experimental data well. A value of spin, I_{m}, has been determined for the observed TW bands below which the wobbling energy increases and above which it decreases with spin. The nucleus ^{183}Au is, so far, the only nucleus in which both the increasing and the decreasing parts are observed and thus gives the experimental evidence of the complete transverse wobbling phenomenon.

A pair of transverse wobbling bands is observed in the nucleus ^{135}Pr. The wobbling is characterized by ΔI=1, E2 transitions between the bands, and a decrease in the wobbling energy confirms its transverse nature. Additionally, a transition from transverse wobbling to a three-quasiparticle band comprised of strong magnetic dipole transitions is observed. These observations conform well to results from calculations with the tilted axis cranking model and the quasiparticle rotor model.

BACKGROUND: Povidone iodine (PVP-I) is a chemical complex of polyvinylpyrrolidone (also known as povidone or PVP) and elemental iodine. Iodine containing compounds are widely and commonly used as antiseptics and disinfectants. They are available in various forms like aqueous solution, tincture, aerosol, ointment, or foam. Skin irritation to them is due to the oxidative effects of iodine. Because of the low free iodine concentration in povidone-iodine, skin irritation is less frequent from short contact (1). CASE: We report two cases, both with no history of allergy to any drugs, who developed an allergic reaction 24 hours after the usage of povidone iodine as a pre-operative antiseptic to prepare (scrub) the lower third of face before surgical removal of third molars. This case report was granted an exemption by the ethical committee of our institution review board. The Helsinki declaration doesn't apply to this case presentation. CONCLUSIONS: PVP-1 is the most commonly used antiseptic scrubbing solution prior to most surgeries. However, allergic contact dermatitis due to PVP-I has not been extensively documented or reported and hence under evaluated, compared to other commonly encountered allergens. There is almost general agreement to the proposition that PVP-I is a very rare sensitizer (2,3) though there are some conflicting reports on the matter. However, sometimes when prolonged skin contact with PVP-I occurs when used as a pre-operative antiseptic agent, it can cause allergic dermatitis (4,5). Does this finding make pre-operative testing for allergies to PVP-1 necessary in all patients? A point to ponder.

RESUMO

We have carried out photodisintegration cross-section measurements on 86Kr using monoenergetic photon beams ranging from the neutron separation energy, S(n) = 9.86 MeV, to 13 MeV. We combine our experimental 86Kr(γ,n)85Kr cross section with results from our recent 86Kr(γ,γ') measurement below the neutron separation energy to obtain the complete nuclear dipole response of 86Kr. The new experimental information is used to predict the neutron capture cross section of 85Kr, an important branching point nucleus on the abundance flow path during s-process nucleosynthesis. Our new and more precise 85Kr(n,γ)86Kr cross section allows us to produce more precise predictions of the 86Kr abundance from s-process models. In particular, we find that the models of the s process in asymptotic giant branch stars of mass <1.5M⊙, where the 13C neutron source burns convectively rather than radiatively, represent a possible solution for the highest 86Kr:82Kr ratios observed in meteoritic stardust SiC grains.

INTRODUCTION: A cervical cytology based screening program is effective if there is regular screening of the 'at risk' population and close follow-up of those labeled abnormal. METHODS: This is a population cohort study of women between 20-69 year old who were eligible in Ontario from 2008-2010. We used administrative data to evaluate the rates of cervical cancer screening and follow-up of high grade Pap tests. Variation in cervical cytology coverage and follow-up of high grade abnormal results are associated with age, area level income and health region. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify independent factors associated with screening and followup. RESULTS: 3.7million women were eligible for screening of which 72% had a Pap smear in the prior 3years. These rates varied by age, income and region (p<0.0001). Women residing in the lowest income neighborhoods were half as likely to be screened (p<0.0001). 83% of those with an high grade intraepithelial lesion Pap test result had follow-up with colposcopy or treatment within 6months and this varied by year, age, income and region (p<0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: Despite universal health coverage, cervical cancer screening rates are suboptimal with older and low income women being at greatest risk. Follow-up among women with high grade abnormal tests is mediocre at 3months and acceptable at 6months. Novel models of cervical cancer screening program implementation are needed to address these inadequacies.

The two-body photodisintegration cross section of (4)He into a proton and triton was measured with monoenergetic photon beams in 0.5 MeV energy steps between 22 and 30 MeV. High-pressure (4)He-Xe gas scintillators of various (4)He/Xe ratios served as targets and detectors. Pure Xe gas scintillators were used for background studies. A NaI detector together with a plastic scintillator paddle was employed for determining the incident photon flux. Our comprehensive data set follows the trend of the theoretical calculations of the Trento group very well, although our data are consistently lower in magnitude by about 5%. However, they differ significantly from the majority of the previous data, especially from the recent data of Shima et al. The latter data had put into question the validity of theoretical approaches used to calculate core-collapse supernova explosions and big-bang nucleosynthesis abundances of certain light nuclei.

There is a renewed interest in the kininase I pathway of kinin metabolism, because des-Arg9-bradykinin (des-Arg9-BK) and des-Arg10-Lys-BK are selective and potent agonists of the B1 receptors, that are apparently upregulated by tissue injury. We have developed a polyclonal rabbit antiserum against des-Arg10-Lys-BK. In a radioimmunoassay for des-Arg10-Lys-BK, this antiserum exhibited high specificity. Notably, native kinins with the C-terminal Arg residue, bradykinin (BK) and Lys-BK, did not cross-react to a significant extent, whereas des-Arg9-BK and digoxigenin (DIG)-des-Arg9-BK exhibited a complete cross-reactivity. The antibodies were used to set up a sensitive chemiluminescence enzyme immunoassay (CLEIA) using the DIG-anti-DIG system as intermediate for the revelation of the immune complexes. The detection limit and the half-maximal saturation concentration for des-Arg9-BK were 27 and 1530 fmol/ml respectively. This assay, as well as another for BK quantification, have been applied in vitro to rabbit plasma activated by kaolin. The conversion of BK into des-Arg9-BK was generally efficient, and the persistence and concentration of both peptides were increased in the presence of enalaprilat an inhibitor of the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACEI). Rabbits treated with bacterial lipopolysaccharide exhibited an increase of plasma immunoreactive des-Arg9-BK that was potentiated in animals also treated with ACEI. This CLEIA for des-Arg9-BK is a new analytical tool applicable to analyze of the kininase I metabolites of kinins in vitro and in vivo. Measurements of des-Arg9-BK may be useful indicators of the kallikrein-kinin system activation.

Kinin antagonists at B1 and B2 receptors were examined on liver and serum concentrations of immunoreactive T-kininogen and its gene expression in a rat model of carrageenan-induced hindpaw edema. Whereas the B2 antagonist, HOE140, dose-dependently inhibited the paw edema induced by intraplantar injection of carrageenan, the B1 receptor agonist [Sar(D-Phe8)des-Arg9]BK and antagonist [Lys(Leu8)des-Arg9]BK were ineffective. On its own, HOE140 (3.25 x 10(-7) mol/ paw, intraplantar) had no effect on liver and serum T-kininogen levels but it significantly enhanced liver T-kininogen concentrations in rats pretreated with carrageenan at 8 and 24 h postinjection. In the liver, the most pronounced effect was seen at 24 h (treated 248 +/- 7 micrograms/g vs. untreated 113 +/- 9 micrograms/g). The same dose of HOE140 increased serum T-kininogen from 1255 +/- 57 to 1696 +/- 83 micrograms/ml at 24 h. HOE140 did not affect tissue albumin content during the same period. Transcript measurements revealed that the steady-state level of liver T2-kininogen mRNA was specifically increased by HOE140 during inflammation. In carrageenan-treated rats, the B1 antagonist [Lys(Leu8)des-Arg9]BK also significantly increased liver T-kininogen at 24 h. The present results support a role for B2 kinin receptors in the early phase of acute phase protein synthesis and of both B2 and B1 receptors in the late phase (24 h). Hence, systemic effects of kinins should be taken into account in the pharmacology and physiopathology of B1 and B2 kinin receptors in inflammation.

OBJECTIVE: To compare oxidative stress between primary retinoblastoma and retinoblastoma with distant metastasis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty consecutive patients presented with primary retinoblastoma and the same number of patients presented with distant metastasis, attending the outpatient department of our hospital between August 2002 and April 2005. All the patients with retinoblastoma underwent a standard metastasis workup and were subsequently categorized into two groups (without metastasis and with metastasis).Venous blood samples were drawn from each patient. After proper centrifugation, serum was collected and antioxidant enzymes and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were assayed. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Serum collected from the patients was subjected to biochemical assay of the antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase and peroxidise) and ROS to determine any difference in enzyme activity between the two groups. RESULTS: Antioxidant levels were found to be less in the metastasis group as compared to the primary intraocular retinoblastoma group(p less than 0.05).Mean ROS activity was found to be increased in metastatic group (p less than 0.05). CONCLUSION: The decreased antioxidant enzymes level along with increased ROS activity in patients with metastatic retinoblastoma reflect increased oxidative stress as compared to primary intraocular retinoblastoma patients.

Two simple, accurate and reproducible spectrophotometric methods; Q analysis and first order derivative method have been described for the simultaneous estimation of drotaverine hydrochloride and paracetamol in combined tablet dosage form. Absorption maxima of drotaverine hydrochloride and paracetamol in distilled water were found to be 303.5 nm and 243.5 nm respectively. Beer's law was obeyed in the concentration range 5-50 mug/ml for drotaverine and 5-60 mug/ml for paracetamol. In Q analysis method, two wavelengths were selected at isobestic point (277 nm) and lambda(max) of paracetamol (243.5 nm). In first order derivative method, zero crossing point for drotaverine hydrochloride and paracetamol were selected at 303.5 nm and 243.5 nm, respectively. The results of two methods were validated statistically and recovery studies were found to be satisfactory.

Brassica carinata was synthesized by hybridization between its diploid progenitor species B. nigra and B. oleracea followed by chromosome doubling. Up to 40 times more hybrids were obtained, using ovary culture than with conventional hand pollination. Two hybrids from the cross B. nigra x B. oleracea var 'alboglabra' were raised to maturity. High chromosome pairing was observed in both the hybrids and the amphidiploid. A range of variability for desirable characters is reported in the synthesized amphidiploids.

The respective role of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and neutral endopeptidase 24.11 (NEP) in the degradation of bradykinin (BK) has been studied in the infarcted and hypertrophied rat heart. Myocardial infarction (MI) was induced in rats by left descendant coronary artery ligature. Animals were killed, and hearts were sampled 1, 4, and 35 days post-MI. BK metabolism was assessed by incubating synthetic BK with heart membranes from sham hearts and infarcted (scar) and noninfarcted regions of infarcted hearts. The half-life (t1/2) of BK showed significant differences among the three types of tissue at 4 days [sham heart (114 +/- 7 s) > noninfarcted region (85 +/- 4 s) > infarcted region (28 +/- 2 s)] and 35 days post-MI [sham heart (143 +/- 6 s) = noninfarcted region (137 +/- 9 s) > infarcted region (55 +/- 4 s)]. No difference was observed at 1 day post-MI. The participation of ACE and NEP in the metabolism of BK was defined by preincubation of the membrane preparations with enalaprilat, an ACE inhibitor, and omapatrilat, a vasopeptidase inhibitor that acts by combined inhibition of NEP and ACE. Enalaprilat significantly prevented the rapid degradation of BK in every tissue type and at every sampling time. Moreover, omapatrilat significantly increased the t1/2 of BK compared with enalaprilat in every tissue type and at every sampling time. These results demonstrate that experimental MI followed by left ventricular dysfunction significantly modifies the metabolism of exogenous BK by heart membranes. ACE and NEP participate in the degradation of BK since both enalaprilat and omapatrilat have potentiating effects on the t1/2 of BK.
