RESUMO

A mixture of isobutyric acid + water has an upper consolute point at 38.8 mass % isobutyric acid and temperature near 26 °C. Nickel (II) oxide dissolves in this mixture by reacting with the acid to produce water and nickel isobutyrate. The solubility of nickel (II) oxide in isobutyric acid + water has been measured as a function of temperature at compositions, 25, 38.8, and 60 mass % isobutyric acid. For values of the temperature, T, which were at least 2 K in excess of the liquid-liquid phase transition temperature, the measured values of the solubility, s, lie on a straight line when plotted in van't Hoff form with ln s versus 1∕T. The slope, (∂ln s∕∂(1∕T)), of the line is negative indicating that the dissolution reaction is endothermic. When the temperature was within 2 K of the phase transition temperature, however, (∂ln s∕∂(1∕T)) diverged toward negative infinity. The principle of critical point universality predicts that when excess solid nickel (II) oxide is in dissolution equilibrium with liquid isobutyric acid + water, (∂ln s∕∂(1∕T)) should diverge upon approaching the consolute point along the critical isopleth at 38.8 mass % isobutyric acid. As determined by the sign of the enthalpy of solution, the sign of this divergence is expected to be negative. Not only do our experiments confirm these predictions, but they also show that identical behavior can be observed at both 25 and 60 mass % isobustyric acid, compositions which lie substantially to either side of the critical composition.

Three-stage absorption by butyl acetate was used to obtain tar components during the co-pyrolysis of fat coal and poplar at high temperature. The resulting tar yields were calculated relative to the fat coal and poplar blends. The tar components were characterized by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The effects of the added poplar on tar formation were then considered. The results show that the poplar-fat coal tar yield rose slightly when the poplar addition levels ranged from 4% to 12% and then increased much more at higher poplar addition levels. Oxygenated and aromatic compounds contributed greatly to the poplar-fat coal tar yield. The quantity of oxygenated components increased in the poplar blending ratio range from 4% to 12% and decreased as the ratio increased further, while the quantity of aromatic components showed the opposite trend. The influences of poplar addition levels on tar formation could be divided into two stages: (a) lighten the tar by stabilizing radicals at low poplar addition levels; (b) form heavier tar due to cross-linking reactions of the remaining radicals at high poplar addition levels. When the poplar addition levels ranged from 4% to 12%, due to synergistic effects, large amounts of free radicals and hydrogen from the co-pyrolysis of coal and poplar formed lighter stable compounds, which were then transported into the tar. Further, cross-linking reactions could be decreased because fewer free radicals and less hydrogen remained. As a result, the amount of PAHs declined, the tar yield rose slightly, the hydrocarbon-generating potential improved, the aliphatic chain length shortened, and the aromatic protons decreased. At higher blending ratios, excess radicals existed after stabilization due to the increasing poplar addition levels. These radicals underwent cross-linking reactions and produced PAHs, resulting in heavily increased tar yields, weakened hydrocarbon-generating potential, extended aliphatic chain lengths and increased aromatic protons.

INTRODUCTION: Rhinocerebral mycosis is a rapidly progressive fatal opportunistic infection, predominantly affecting people in an immunocompromised state. Aggressive surgical therapy, with repeated debridement in combination with intravenous amphotericin B can lead to a high rate of cure. AIM: To determine the predictors of mortality in rhinocerebral mycosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The demographic data, clinical features, radiological (MRI/CT) findings, treatment details of patients with a diagnosis of rhinocerebral mycosis confirmed on histopathology were analyzed retrospectively. The outcome was assessed as alive and dead. Univariate analysis with odds ratio (OR) was employed in data analysis. Chi-square test was used for P value. RESULTS: There were 38 patients. The age range was 7-82 (mean 48.68) years; 30 (79%) were males. Craniofacial pain was the most common initial presenting symptom, noted in 29 (76.3%). Rhino-orbital involvement was noted in 24 (63.2%) and 12 (31.6%) had associated focal neurological deficits. Immunocompromised state was noted in 24 (63.2%). Eighteen (47.4%) patients died. The predictors for mortality: odds ratio (95% CI) were 2.45 (1.01-3.89) for elderly age, 5.67 (4.13-7.21) for intracranial extension, 2.6 (1.26-3.94) for immunocompromised state, 2.62 (1.25-3.99) for infection with zygomycosis and 2.33 (1.01-3.65) for anemia. CONCLUSION: Rhinocerebral mycosis is associated with high mortality in spite of aggressive therapy. Intracranial extension with focal neurological deficits is a major predictor of mortality in rhinocerebral mycosis.

Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are closely related severe, acute mucocutaneous reactions usually caused by drugs. They are acute life-threatening conditions and cause widespread necrosis of the epithelium. There is persistence of a high risk of SJS or TEN in relation to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection associated with exposure to nevirapine (NVP). In this article, we present nine cases of SJS and one case of TEN in HIV-seropositive individuals who developed cutaneous, oral, ocular and genital lesions while being treated with NVP.

RESUMO

The presence of veterinary and human antibiotics in soil and surface water is an emerging environmental concern. The current study was aimed at evaluating the potential of using vetiver grass as a phytoremediation agent in removing Tetracycline (TC) from aqueous media. The study determined uptake, translocation, and transformation of TC in vetiver grass as function of initial antibiotic concentrations and exposure time. Vetiver plants were grown for 60 days in a greenhouse in TC contaminated hydroponic system. Preliminary results show that complete removal of tetracycline occurred within 40 days in all TC treatments. Initial concentrations of TC had significant effect (p < 0.0001) on the kinetics of removaL Tetracycline was detected in the root as well as shoot tissues, confirming uptake and root-to-shoot translocation. Liquid-chromatography-tandem-mass-spectrometry analysis of plant tissue samples suggest presence of metabolites of TC in both root and shoot tissues of vetiver grass. The current data is encouraging and is expected to aid in developing a cost-effective, in-situ phytoremediation technique to remove TC group of antibiotics from wastewater.

Wheat (Triticum aestivum) collected in the Nawanshahr-Hoshiarpur Region (Punjab, India) showed the highest selenium concentrations ever recorded in cereal grains (29-185 microg g(-1)). There was a strong positive relationship between the selenium content in shoots and that in kernels, showing that grain selenium concentration can be predicted from that in the vegetative tissues of the plant. The identity and content of the selenocompounds in the grain samples and in wheat-based reference materials were investigated by HPLC-ICP-dynamic reaction cell-MS. Reversed-phase, cation exchange, and anion exchange HPLC were used to separate the selenium species after ultrasound-assisted enzymatic extraction with an ultrasonic probe. Selenomethionine and selenate accounted for 72-85% and 2-6% of the sum of the selenium species, respectively. The proportion of organic Se species varied with increasing Se content; namely, SeMet showed a relative reduction whereas the other organoselenium compounds increased up to 18-22% of the total chromatographed selenium. Se-methyl-selenocysteine was detected as a minor compound (0.2-0.5%) in high-Se wheat by both reversed-phase and cation exchange HPLC using retention time matching with the standard substance spiked to the sample extracts. Regular consumption of locally produced wheat-based food items may lead the population of the study area to an excessive intake of selenium. On the other hand, the large predominance of selenomethionine shows that local wheat can be a promising raw material for naturally enriched products to be used to supplement human and animal diets in low selenium areas.
