BACKGROUND: Brain tumors are the fifth leading cause of death in women of 20-39 years of age, including pregnant with similar onset and evolution. CASE REPORT: 33 years of age with neurological manifestations due to an intracranial meningioma and 37 weeks pregnant. The pregnancy was terminated and the tumor was removed; the results were favorable for the mother and child. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of intracranial tumors during pregnancy is extremely low. Headache is the first symptom in almost 90% of cases, but are also common: nausea, vomiting, seizures and neurological deficits. MRI is the diagnostic study of choice. Meningiomas are the most common benign primary brain tumors of the central nervous system. They are a rare association; pregnant patients often experience more symptoms under accelerated tumor growth of a neoplasm usually slow growing. The treatment is surgical, although the current trend is the conservative treatment to achieve viable pregnancies. Emergency neurosurgery is reserved for cases with suspected increase in ICP, herniation, progressive neurological deterioration or other condition that threatens the life of the mother. The choice between Caesarean delivery and not only neurosurgery, there are multiple obstetrical, neurological and anesthesia to be taken into account factors. The prognosis is generally excellent with a 5-year survival greater than 90%.

Centrins are calcium binding proteins that belong to the EF-hand superfamily with diverse biological functions. Herein we present the first systematic study that establishes the relative stability of related centrins via complementary biophysical techniques. Our results define the stepwise molecular behavior of human centrins by two-dimensional infrared (2D IR) correlation spectroscopy, the change in heat capacity and enthalpy of denaturation by differential scanning calorimetry, and the relative stability of the helical regions of centrins by circular dichroism. More importantly, 2D IR correlation spectroscopy provides unique information about the similarities and differences in dynamics between these related proteins. The thermally induced molecular behavior of human centrins can be used to predict biological target interactions that have a relative dependence on calcium affinity. This information is essential for understanding why certain isoforms may be used to rescue a phenotype and therefore also for explaining the different functions these proteins may have in vivo. Furthermore, this comparative approach can be applied to the study of recombinant therapeutic protein candidates for the treatment of disease states.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a condition that increases the risk of developing several health problems, resulting in high health care costs worldwide. Therefore, it is important to investigate several avenues for the control of this condition. This study aimed to identify a dermatoglyphical condition that distinguishes obesity individuals from those of appropriate weight. METHODS: The sample comprised 2172 children and teenagers between the ages of 10 and 19 years, female and male, from public and private schools of the municipality of Joaçaba, Santa Catarina, Brazil. RESULTS: In a comparison of qualitative variables, i.e., patterns, significant differences were observed between groups, including a higher frequency of ulnar loops (LU) on the index and middle fingers (MET2 and MET3) in the appropriate weight group. In the obesity group, a greater frequency of whorls (W) on fingers MET2 and MET3 was observed in males. In females, there were statistically significant correlations between the presence of radial loops (LR) on MET3 in the appropriate weight group and arches (A) in the obesity group. CONCLUSIONS: The study uncovered dermatoglyphical marks characteristic of obesity individuals.

Background: Obesity is a health condition that causes a great impact on public health. The aim of this study was to determine the association between dermatoglyphic characteristics and excessive weight in children and adolescents aged 10 to 19 years in the center-west region of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Methods: The sample comprised of 2,172 children and adolescents aged 10 to 19 years old of both sexes and from public and private teaching networks. Results: The results suggested a predictive marker of obesity, with a greater number of lines in left hand finger two (Mesql2) and a higher frequency of the whorl pattern in participants of a healthy weight, while the overweight group had a higher frequency of the radial loop pattern and the obese group had a higher frequency of the ulnar loop pattern. Conclusion: It was concluded that there may be different dermatoglyphic characteristics depending on the nutritional status of children and adolescents.
