We propose and analyze a continuous-time firing-rate neural network, the positive firing-rate competitive network (PFCN), to tackle sparse reconstruction problems with non-negativity constraints. These problems, which involve approximating a given input stimulus from a dictionary using a set of sparse (active) neurons, play a key role in a wide range of domains, including, for example, neuroscience, signal processing, and machine learning. First, by leveraging the theory of proximal operators, we relate the equilibria of a family of continuous-time firing-rate neural networks to the optimal solutions of sparse reconstruction problems. Then we prove that the PFCN is a positive system and give rigorous conditions for the convergence to the equilibrium. Specifically, we show that the convergence depends only on a property of the dictionary and is linear-exponential in the sense that initially, the convergence rate is at worst linear and then, after a transient, becomes exponential. We also prove a number of technical results to assess the contractivity properties of the neural dynamics of interest. Our analysis leverages contraction theory to characterize the behavior of a family of firing-rate competitive networks for sparse reconstruction with and without non-negativity constraints. Finally, we validate the effectiveness of our approach via a numerical example.

It delves into the genetic and metabolic underpinnings of PKU, highlighting the crucial need for stringent dietary regulation to manage phenylalanine levels and mitigate neurological complications. Through bibliometric analysis and current product evaluations, it identifies trends in PKU food research, emphasizing recent innovations in food formulations such as glycomacropeptide (GMP) supplements and higher appealing low-phenylalanine food products. Furthermore, it accentuates the sensory and consumer aspects of PKU dietary solutions, underscoring the importance of palatability for adherence. Notably, the review introduces 3D food printing as an emerging technology for creating personalized, nutrient-optimized, and sensory-appealing foods for PKU patients, offering a new horizon in dietary management. This comprehensive assessment underscores the dynamic interplay between nutritional science, food technology, and sensory evaluation in improving the quality of life for individuals with PKU.

Seafood processing has traditionally been challenging due to the rapid spoilage rates and quality degradation of these products. With the rise of food science and technology, novel methods are being developed to overcome these challenges and improve seafood quality, shelf life, and safety. These methods range from high-pressure processing (HPP) to edible coatings, and their exploration and application in seafood processing are of great importance. This review synthesizes the recent advancements in various emerging technologies used in the seafood industry and critically evaluates their efficacy, challenges, and potential benefits. The technologies covered include HPP, ultrasound, pulsed electric field, plasma technologies, pulsed light, low-voltage electrostatic field, ozone, vacuum cooking, purified condensed smoke, microwave heating, and edible coating. Each technology offers unique advantages and presents specific challenges; however, their successful application largely depends on the nature of the seafood product and the desired result. HPP and microwave heating show exceptional promise in terms of quality retention and shelf-life extension. Edible coatings present a multifunctional approach, offering preservation and the potential enhancement of nutritional value. The strength, weakness, opportunity, and threat (SWOT) analysis indicates that, despite the potential of these technologies, cost-effectiveness, scalability, regulatory considerations, and consumer acceptance remain crucial issues. As the seafood industry stands on the cusp of a technological revolution, understanding these nuances becomes imperative for sustainable growth. Future research should focus on technological refinements, understanding consumer perspectives, and developing regulatory frameworks to facilitate the adoption of these technologies in the seafood industry.

Seeded emulsion polymerization is one of the best-known methods for preparing polymer particles with a controlled size, composition, and shape. It first requires the preparation of seed particles, which are then swollen with additional monomer (the same as the one used for the seed or a different one), to either increase the seed's size or change its morphology. The use of surfactants plays a central role in guaranteeing the required colloidal stability and contributing to the final shape and structure of the particles by lowering the interfacial energy between the polymer of the seed and the added monomer. We here study the polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of polystyrene seed particles at various surfactant concentrations in the presence and absence of a surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate). We first show experimentally that the morphology of the colloidal particles can be tuned from Janus to core-shell, depending on the presence or absence of surfactant on the seeds particles' surface. Furthermore, using classical molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate the mechanism and behavior of the surfactants during the first stages of the polymerization process. We use a newly developed approach based on contact statistical analysis to confirm the critical role played by the organization of surfactant molecules on the surface of the seed particles in dictating the final particle morphology.

Post-synthesis modifications are valuable tools to alter functionalities and induce morphology changes in colloidal particles. Non-spherical polymer particles with Janus characteristics are prepared by combining seeded growth polymerization and selective dissolution. First, spherical polystyrene (PS) particles have been swollen with methyl methacrylate (MMA) with an activated swelling method. This is followed by polymerization that led to particles with two well-separated faces: one made of PS and the second of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). Subsequently, non-spherical particles are obtained by exposing the Janus colloids to various solvents. Using the two polymers' orthogonal solubility, solvents are identified to selectively dissolve only one face, leading to hemispherical PS or PMMA particles. It is further investigated how changing the composition of the PMMA face - by either co-polymerization with glycidyl methacrylate or by adding a cross-linker - affects the particles' morphology. The poly-methacrylate face can gain total or partial resistance towards the solvents, resulting in intriguing shapes, such as mushroom-like and Janus dimpled particles. The dissolution mechanisms are investigated via optical microscopy, where total or partial dissolutions can be directly observed. Lastly, prematurely quenching the dissolution of the particle's lobes with water can be used to control the Janus mushroom-like particle aspect ratio.

Thraustochytrids are aquatic unicellular protists organisms that represent an important reservoir of a wide range of bioactive compounds, such as essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) such as arachidonic acid (ARA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), which are involved in the regulation of the immune system. In this study, we explore the use of co-cultures of Aurantiochytrium sp. and bacteria as a biotechnological tool capable of stimulating PUFA bioaccumulation. In particular, the co-culture of lactic acid bacteria and the protist Aurantiochytrium sp. T66 induce PUFA bioaccumulation, and the lipid profile was evaluated in cultures at different inoculation times, with two different strains of lactic acid bacteria capable of producing the tryptophan dependent auxins, and one strain of Azospirillum sp., as a reference for auxin production. Our results showed that the Lentilactobacillus kefiri K6.10 strain inoculated at 72 h gives the best PUFA content (30.89 mg g-1 biomass) measured at 144 h of culture, three times higher than the control (8.87 mg g-1 biomass). Co-culture can lead to the generation of complex biomasses with higher added value for developing aquafeed supplements.

This study investigates the potential of utilizing three food wastes: cheese whey (CW), beet molasses (BM), and corn steep liquor (CSL) as alternative nutrient sources for the cultivation of the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum, a promising source of polyunsaturated eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and the carotenoid fucoxanthin. The CW media tested did not significantly impact the growth rate of P. tricornutum; however, CW hydrolysate significantly enhances cell growth. BM in cultivation medium enhances biomass production and fucoxanthin yield. The optimization of the new food waste medium was conducted through the application of a response surface methodology (RSM) using hydrolyzed CW, BM, and CSL as factors. The results showed a significant positive impact of these factors (p < 0.005), with an optimized biomass yield of 2.35 g L-1 and a fucoxanthin yield of 3.64 mg L-1 using a medium composed of 33 mL L-1 of CW, 2.3 g L-1 of BM, and 2.24 g L-1 of CSL. The experimental results reported in this study showed that some food by-products from a biorefinery perspective could be utilized for the efficient production of fucoxanthin and other high-added-value products such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).

Mozzarella stretching water (MSW) is a dairy effluent generated from mozzarella cheese production that does not have a real use and is destined to disposal, causing environmental problems and representing a high disposal cost for dairy producers. Spent brewery yeast (SBY) is another promising food waste produced after brewery manufacturing that could be recycled in new biotechnological processes. Aurantiochytrium mangrovei is an aquatic protist known as producer of bioactive lipids such as omega 3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω3 LC-PUFA), in particular docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). In this work MSW and SBY have been used to formulate new sustainable growth media for A. mangrovei cultivation and production of DHA in an attempt to valorize these effluents. MSW required an enzymatic hydrolysis to enhance the biomass production. The new media obtained from hydrolysed MSW was also optimized using response surface methodologies, obtaining 10.14 g L-1 of biomass in optimized medium, with a DHA content of 1.21 g L-1.

Green vertical systems have advantages in terms of building energy performance, but their environmental impact should be assessed in comparison to un-vegetated constructive systems. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the environmental loads of a green façade, which was compared to other building exterior wall systems. A Life Cycle Analysis approach was used to compare the green façade with constructive solutions commonly applied for enhancing the thermal insulation properties of the building exterior walls. The green façade and the other constructive solutions were characterised by an equivalent thermal behaviour. A green façade system prototype, realised with vegetation climbing on a steel frame, was used for the study. The comparison was carried out with exterior walls using insulation materials as expanded polystyrene, expanded cork and wood fibre. A double wall with an un-ventilated air gap was used as well. On average, the best environmental performance was recorded for the wall using cork as insulating material and for the double wall. The results highlighted the environmental criticalities of the green façade as the system having an environmental load among the most burdensome. Different scenarios of green façade with the use of alternative constructive solutions were hypothesized and compared by the life cycle analysis and life cycle impact assessment. The study showed that the adoption of a wooden frame in place of the steel one, as plant supporting structure, reduces the carbon footprint of the green façade by 58%. The environmental comparison was carried out also considering non-vegetated constructive solutions having an equivalent sun shading effect on the wall. The analysis showed that the green façade has the best environmental performance when compared with sun shading systems in aluminium or PVC.

People who use drugs are a key population in global HCV control. We evaluated the efficacy of an innovative model to eliminate HCV infection in a high-risk population of PWUD in a service for substance use disorder (SUD). Between January 2018 and December 2018, we conducted a prospective, interventional, before and after study, based on audits performed by Infectious Diseases physicians in a SUD facility in Piedimonte Matese, in southern Italy, to improve the knowledge about HCV infection; a shared protocol for screening and linkage to care of patients was implemented. The pre-intervention period was defined as January-December 2017 and the post-intervention period as January-December 2018. The subjects followed up at SUD facility in the pre-intervention and post-intervention periods were 318 and 275, respectively. Compared with the pre-intervention period, the number of anti-HCV-positive subjects tested for HCV RNA was higher in the post-intervention period (91% vs 27%, P < .0001), as was the number who started directly acting antivirals (DAAs). Of the 18 HCV RNA-positive subjects in the pre-intervention period, only 3 (16.6%) started DAA, a percentage decisively lower than that observed after the start of the programme, 63 (84%) of 75 subjects (P < .0001), and all obtained SVR. The data were similar for people who inject drugs (PWID) and non-PWID sub-populations. The use of our innovative model with close interaction between the Infectious Disease Unit and the SUD facility determined a significant increase in HCV RNA testing, linkage to care and the start of DAA in the PWUD population.

AIMS: A prolonged PR interval is known to be associated with increased mortality and a higher risk of developing atrial fibrillation (AF). We tested the hypothesis that cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is superior to conventional dual-chamber pacing with algorithms for right ventricular pacing avoidance (DDD-VPA) in preserving systolic and diastolic function and in preventing new-onset AF in patients with normal systolic function, indication for pacing and prolonged atrioventricular conduction (PR interval ≥220 ms). METHODS AND RESULTS: We randomly assigned 82 patients with ejection fraction >35%, indication for pacing and PR interval ≥220 ms to CRT or to DDD-VPA. On 12-month follow-up examination, the study and control arms did not differ in terms of left ventricular end-systolic volume (44 ± 17 mL vs. 47 ± 16 mL, P = 0.511) or ejection fraction (55 ± 6% vs. 57 ± 8%, P = 0.291). The E to A mitral wave amplitude ratio was higher in the CRT arm (1.3 ± 1.3 vs. 0.8 ± 0.4, P = 0.046) and the E wave deceleration time was longer (262 ± 83 ms vs. 205 ± 51 ms, P = 0.027). Left atrial volume was smaller in the CRT arm (64 ± 17 mL vs. 84 ± 25 mL, P = 0.035). Moreover, the functional class was lower in CRT patients (1.4 ± 0.6 vs. 1.8 ± 0.5, P = 0.010). During follow-up, CRT was associated with a lower risk of new-onset AF [hazard ratio = 0.37 (0.13-0.98), P = 0.046]. CONCLUSION: Cardiac resynchronization therapy proved superior to DDD-VPA in terms of better diastolic function, less left atrial enlargement and lower risk of new-onset AF, at 12 months. Olfaction is considered a distance sense; hence, aquatic olfaction is thought to be mediated only by molecules dissolved in water. Here, we challenge this view by showing that shrimp and fish can recognize the presence of hydrophobic olfactory cues by a "tactile" form of chemoreception. We found that odiferous furanosesquiterpenes protect both the Mediterranean octocoral Maasella edwardsi and its specialist predator, the nudibranch gastropod Tritonia striata, from potential predators. Food treated with the terpenes elicited avoidance responses in the cooccurring shrimp Palaemon elegans Rejection was also induced in the shrimp by the memory recall of postingestive aversive effects (vomiting), evoked by repeatedly touching the food with chemosensory mouthparts. Consistent with their emetic properties once ingested, the compounds were highly toxic to brine shrimp. Further experiments on the zebrafish showed that this vertebrate aquatic model also avoids food treated with one of the terpenes, after having experienced gastrointestinal malaise. The fish refused the food after repeatedly touching it with their mouths. The compounds studied thus act simultaneously as (i) toxins, (ii) avoidance-learning inducers, and (iii) aposematic odorant cues. Although they produce a characteristic smell when exposed to air, the compounds are detected by direct contact with the emitter in aquatic environments and are perceived at high doses that are not compatible with their transport in water. The mouthparts of both the shrimp and the fish have thus been shown to act as "aquatic noses," supporting a substantial revision of the current definition of the chemical senses based upon spatial criteria.

BACKGROUND: The present study reports for the first time the physical, chemical and sensory characterization of a traditional fish sauce from Italy, called 'Colatura di Alici', which is considered to be the direct descendant of the ancient roman sauce 'Garum'. RESULTS: Among the volatile compounds, carboxylic acids, aldehydes, sulphuric compounds and pyrazines were identified. The most abundant compounds identified were 3-methyl-butanoic acid, nonanal and 3-methyl-butanal. The sample A had the highest amount of volatile fatty acids (>250 µg kg-1 ) and sample B had the highest concentration of aldehydes (>80 µg kg-1 ). These volatile compounds arise from the long fermentation activity and oxidation of fatty acids of the fish flesh and are responsible for the strong cheesy and fishy aroma. The protein content ranged from 90 to 130 g kg-1 , and the soluble solids ranged from 30 to 38 °Brix, as a result of the high amount of NaCl used during processing. The sensory analysis showed a great intensity for the cheesy, fishy and umami attributes, and a medium intensity for the roasted and meaty attributes. CONCLUSION: For the first time, the volatile compounds and sensory characteristics of this traditional fish sauce are reported. The samples differ in terms of sensory and aromatic profiles. These differences are probably linked to the poorly standardized methods used in the production process. Overall, the results of the present study could be used by local fish sauce producers to monitor the quality of the product and to improve the production process. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

AIM: To determine the characteristics of workplace violence towards emergency nurses in Campania, South Italy. INTRODUCTION: In Italy, workplace violence is a severe and widespread problem. A national survey describes that, working in South Italy significantly increases the probability of being exposed. However, available data in Campania workplace violence towards nurse emergency department (ED) is lacking. METHOD: We used a cross-sectional design, in two emergency department. Between April and May 2019, we distributed a questionnaire (QIN16VIPs). Three types of violence have been investigated: verbal/physical violence, verbal violence and physical violence. The data were analyzed using procedures of descriptive statistics. RESULTS: A total of 83 questionnaires (response rate 92.3%), 48.2% of emergency nurses experienced verbal violence, 21.7% both verbal and physical violence and only 28.9% denied having experienced either. Nurses feeling at risk in emergency setting were more exposed to workplace violence (p=0.001). Anxiety (p=0.023) and anger (p=0.001) were perceived feeling with significant repercussions on the degree of evidence working in ED (p=0.043) and on trust in management (p=0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Workplace violence turns out to be a serious and widespread problem that generates negative feelings in the attacked subject that affect the personal and work dimension. The promotion of simple and anonymous reporting systems would help nurses to be more aware of the importance of reporting the event, which is still in deficit today, thus preventing a true and proper estimate of the phenomenon. Future research should be focused for preventive measures could be drawn up to reduce the problem.

This paper is concerned with the study of the global emerging behavior in complex networks where each node can be modeled as a cyber-physical system. We recast the problem of characterizing the behavior of such systems as a stability problem and give two technical results to assess this property. We then illustrate the effectiveness of our approach by considering two testbed examples arising in applications where networks, arising from Internet of Things applications, need to be designed so as to fulfill a given task.

Marine bioconstructions are biodiversity-rich, three-dimensional biogenic structures, regulating key ecological functions of benthic ecosystems worldwide. Tropical coral reefs are outstanding for their beauty, diversity and complexity, but analogous types of bioconstructions are also present in temperate seas. The main bioconstructions in the Mediterranean Sea are represented by coralligenous formations, vermetid reefs, deep-sea cold-water corals, Lithophyllum byssoides trottoirs, coral banks formed by the shallow-water corals Cladocora caespitosa or Astroides calycularis, and sabellariid or serpulid worm reefs. Bioconstructions change the morphological and chemicophysical features of primary substrates and create new habitats for a large variety of organisms, playing pivotal roles in ecosystem functioning. In spite of their importance, Mediterranean bioconstructions have not received the same attention that tropical coral reefs have, and the knowledge of their biology, ecology and distribution is still fragmentary. All existing data about the spatial distribution of Italian bioconstructions have been collected, together with information about their growth patterns, dynamics and connectivity. The degradation of these habitats as a consequence of anthropogenic pressures (pollution, organic enrichment, fishery, coastal development, direct physical disturbance), climate change and the spread of invasive species was also investigated. The study of bioconstructions requires a holistic approach leading to a better understanding of their ecology and the application of more insightful management and conservation measures at basin scale, within ecologically coherent units based on connectivity: the cells of ecosystem functioning.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a relevant cardiovascular condition that is more prevalent in the elderly patients aged over 65 years. AF, with abnormal rate and rhythm can cause symptoms directly or indirectly by exacerbating other frequently coexisting cardiac conditions such as valvular heart disease, hypertension, ischemic cardiomyopathy, dilated cardiomyopathy, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Evidence suggests that aging-related cardiovascular changes predispose to the elderly to AF. Current therapeutic options such as antiarrhythmic drugs have not been extensively evaluated in the elderly population. Emerging pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment options for the management of AF, such as dronedarone or catheter ablation, are of particular interest in the elderly. The present paper reviews the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and the management of AF in the elderly patient.

AIMS: A recommendation for a subcutaneous-implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (S-ICD) has been added to recent European Society of Cardiology Guidelines. However, the S-ICD is not ideally suitable for patients who need pacing. The aim of this survey was to analyse the current practice of ICD implantation and to evaluate the actual suitability of S-ICD. METHODS AND RESULTS: The survey 'S-ICD Why Not?' was an independent initiative taken by the Italian Heart Rhythm Society (AIAC). Clinical characteristics, selection criteria, and factors guiding the choice of ICD type were collected in consecutive patients who underwent ICD implantation in 33 Italian centres from September to December 2015. A cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) device was implanted in 39% (369 of 947) of patients undergoing de novo ICD implantation. An S-ICD was implanted in 12% of patients with no CRT indication (62 of 510 with available data). S-ICD patients were younger than patients who received transvenous ICD, more often had channelopathies, and more frequently received their device for secondary prevention of sudden death. More frequently, the clinical reason for preferring a transvenous ICD over an S-ICD was the need for pacing (45%) or for antitachycardia pacing (36%). Nonetheless, only 7% of patients fulfilled conditions for recommending permanent pacing, and 4% of patients had a history of monomorphic ventricular tachycardia that might have been treatable with antitachycardia pacing. CONCLUSION: The vast majority of patients needing ICD therapy are suitable candidates for S-ICD implantation. Nevertheless, it currently seems to be preferentially adopted for secondary prevention of sudden death in young patients with channelopathies.

Transplantation of dopaminergic neurons can potentially improve the clinical outcome of Parkinson's disease, a neurological disorder resulting from degeneration of mesencephalic dopaminergic neurons. In particular, transplantation of embryonic-stem-cell-derived dopaminergic neurons has been shown to be efficient in restoring motor symptoms in conditions of dopamine deficiency. However, the use of pluripotent-derived cells might lead to the development of tumours if not properly controlled. Here we identified a minimal set of three transcription factors--Mash1 (also known as Ascl1), Nurr1 (also known as Nr4a2) and Lmx1a--that are able to generate directly functional dopaminergic neurons from mouse and human fibroblasts without reverting to a progenitor cell stage. Induced dopaminergic (iDA) cells release dopamine and show spontaneous electrical activity organized in regular spikes consistent with the pacemaker activity featured by brain dopaminergic neurons. The three factors were able to elicit dopaminergic neuronal conversion in prenatal and adult fibroblasts from healthy donors and Parkinson's disease patients. Direct generation of iDA cells from somatic cells might have significant implications for understanding critical processes for neuronal development, in vitro disease modelling and cell replacement therapies.

GABAergic interneurons are thought to play a critical role in eliciting interictal spikes (IICs) and triggering ictal discharges in temporal lobe epilepsy, yet the contribution of different interneuronal subtypes to seizure initiation is still largely unknown. Here we took advantage of optogenetic techniques combined with patch-clamp and field recordings to selectively stimulate parvalbumin (PV)- or somatostatin (SOM)-positive interneurons expressing channelrhodopsin-2 (CHR-2) in layers II-III of adult mouse medial entorhinal cortical slices during extracellular perfusion with the proconvulsive compound 4-aminopyridine (4-AP, 100-200 µM). In control conditions, blue laser photostimulation selectively activated action potential firing in either PV or SOM interneurons and, in both cases, caused a robust GABAA-receptor-mediated inhibition in pyramidal cells (PCs). During perfusion with 4-AP, brief photostimuli (300 ms) activating either PV or SOM interneurons induced patterns of epileptiform activity that closely replicated spontaneously occurring IICs and tonic-clonic ictal discharges. Laser-induced synchronous firing in both interneuronal types elicited large compound GABAergic inhibitory postsynaptic currents (IPSCs) correlating with IICs and preictal spikes. In addition, spontaneous and laser-induced epileptic events were similarly initiated in concurrence with a large increase in extracellular potassium concentration. Finally, interneuron activation was unable to stop or significantly shorten the progression of seizurelike episodes. These results suggest that entorhinal PV and SOM interneurons are nearly equally effective in triggering interictal and ictal discharges that closely resemble human temporal lobe epileptic activity.
