PURPOSE: Sugar-sweetened beverage intake is a risk factor for insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, fatty liver, and steatohepatitis (NASH). Sub-chronic supplementation of liquid fructose, but not glucose, in female rats increases liver and plasma triglycerides without inflammation. We hypothesized that chronic supplementation of fructose would cause NASH and liver insulin resistance. METHODS: We supplemented female Sprague-Dawley rats with water or either fructose or glucose 10% w/v solutions under isocaloric conditions for 7 months. At the end, plasma analytes, insulin, and adiponectin were determined, as well as liver triglyceride content and the expression of key genes controlling inflammation, fatty acid synthesis and oxidation, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and plasma VLDL clearance, by biochemical and histological methods. RESULTS: Although sugar-supplemented rats increased their energy intake by 50-60%, we found no manifestation of liver steatosis, fibrosis or necrosis, unchanged plasma or tissue markers of inflammation or fibrosis, and reduced liver expression of gluconeogenic enzymes, despite both sugars increased fatty acid synthesis, mTORC1, and IRE1 activity, while decreasing fatty acid oxidation and PPARα activity. Only fructose-supplemented rats were hypertriglyceridemic, showing a reduced expression of VLDL receptor and lipoprotein lipase in skeletal muscle and vWAT. Glucose-supplemented rats showed increased adiponectinemia, which would explain the different metabolic outcomes of the two sugars. CONCLUSIONS: Chronic liquid simple sugar supplementation, as the sole risk factor, is not enough for female rats to develop NASH and increased liver gluconeogenesis. Nevertheless, under isocaloric conditions, only fructose induced hypertriglyceridemia, thus confirming that also the type of nutrient matters in the development of metabolic diseases.

BACKGROUND: Attachment Theory has become one of the leading theories in human development. Nonetheless, empirical studies focusing on how attachment unfolds during adolescence are still scarce particularly in Spain, due to the lack of adequate measures. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to validate the Important People Interview (IPI) in a shorter questionnaire version (Important People- Questionnaire; IP-Q); to analyse the changes in different affiliative bonds to multiple figures -family, peers, romantic partners - over the course of adolescence; and to identify boys' and girls' hierarchical ordering of their specific attachment bonds. METHOD: 1025 Spanish adolescents, aged 12-17 years old completed the IP-Q. RESULTS: The results showed that the IP-Q has convergent and divergent validity. Moreover, this measure indicated that peers overtake some family members in proximity-seeking and support-seeking, but not in the overall hierarchical ordering of the attachment bond during adolescence. CONCLUSIONS: The bond with the romantic partner increases in terms of scoring on the affiliative subscales as adolescence progresses. There are significant gender differences among the hierarchy patterns of attachment for boys and girls. Developmental changes in adolescent attachment are discussed.

The present work investigated the physicochemical properties of O/W emulsions containing functional ingredients (oil with high ω-3 fatty acid content, protein and/or soluble fiber) from chia seeds. The effect of different protein-carbohydrate combinations (sodium caseinate and lactose, sodium caseinate and maltodextrin, chia protein-rich fraction and maltodextrin) and the presence of chia mucilage (0 and 0.2 % wt/wt) in the aqueous phase of chia O/W emulsions was studied as a function of droplet size distribution, Sauter mean diameter, ζ-potential, rheological properties and backscattering profiles. The use of sodium caseinate in combination with lactose or maltodextrin produced chia O/W emulsions with small droplet size (0.22-0.27 µm), high degree of uniformity in droplet size distribution, negatively charged droplets (at pH 6.5), pseudoplastic behavior and high physical stability. Emulsions with chia protein-rich fraction presented wider droplet size distribution and higher D[3,2] values than the previous ones, recording a Newtonian behavior. The addition of chia mucilage affected the physicochemical properties studied, mainly the rheological characteristics of emulsions.

BACKGROUND: to evaluate, in an initial way, the effectiveness of bioadhesive chlorhexidine gel 0.2% versus placebo as a preventive and therapeutic intervention of oral mucositis induced by radiation therapy and chemotherapy in patients diagnosed with head and neck cancer treated with chemoradiotherapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this pilot study, 7 patients (range of age: 18- 65), having histological documented diagnosis of squamous carcinoma on the head and neck region in stage III and IV, and receiving combined radiation treatment and chemotherapy (cisplatin 100 mg/m2 IV on days 1, 22, and 43 of irradiation) were studied. Simultaneously, a topical application was performed with bioadhesive chlorhexidine gel 0.2% in the study group, and the placebo gel for the control group in 5 applications per day, from the time of initiation of cancer treatment to 2 weeks after completion of chemo-radiotherapy treatment (11 weeks of follow-up). The gradation of mucositis, pain, analgesic consumption, infectious complications, and treatment tolerance was measured. RESULTS: After 7 patients completed the protocol, any differences were observed between groups in an interval analysis. Mucositis, pain, and tolerance was similar in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Our results must be interpreted with caution due to the reduced sample size, but the use of bioadhesive chlorhexidine gel 0.2% didn't contribute clinical improvement to the oral mucositis induced by radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of a hydrogel based on ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE) and 1,8-diamino-3,6-dioxaoctane (DA). Chemically stable Co(II) and Cu(II) coordination complexes were prepared with this nonsoluble polyelectrolyte, poly(EGDE-DA), and studied by ss-NMR, FT-IR, thermogravimetry, and microscopy. Mesopores were found in all the samples, the thermal stability of the polymer matrix was highly affected by the presence of metal ions, and the (13)C CP-MAS spectrum for the Cu(II)-complex evidenced a significant increase in the reticulation degree by Cu(II) ions. The catalytic activity of these materials on H2O2 activation was studied by electron spin resonance (ESR). The Co(II)-poly(EGDE-DA)/H2O2 heterogeneous system produced O2, an anion superoxide (O2(•)¯), and a hydroxyl radical (OH(•)), which diffused into the solution at the time that a decrease in pH was detected. In the same way, the Cu(II)-poly(EGDE-DA)/H2O2 heterogeneous system produced O2 and OH(•). H2O2 activation by the poly(EGDE-DA) complexes with Co(II) and Cu(II) were applied on the decolorization of solutions of the azo-dye methyl orange (MO). In the presence of 63 mM H2O2, 87% of MO was removed in 10 min with Cu(II)-poly(EGDE-DA) and in 110 min with Co(II)-poly(EGDE-DA). In addition, the pharmaceutical product epinephrine was partially oxidized to adrenochrome by the O2(•)¯ released from the Co(II)-poly(EGDE-DA)/H2O2 heterogeneous system.

In this study, high-phosphorus beared microalgae was prepared by cultivating modification in high-phosphorus culture, and used for the enhanced Cd(II) biomineralization in soil. Batch experiment results showed that Chlorella sorokiniana FK was modified successfully in highly phosphate culture. Both intracellular P (Poly-P, 29.7 mg/kg) and surface P (phosphoryl based functional groups, 3.7 mol/kg) were greatly enhanced, and the Cd(II) removal capacity surged to 45.98 mg/g at equilibrium in the Langmuir simulation. The EXAFS analysis indicated that Cd tended to form a more stable bidentate complex (RPO4)2Cd when bounding with phosphate groups on the surface of the high-phosphorus microalgae. Moreover, high-phosphorus beared microalgae not only had higher immobilization amount of Cd(II), but also promoted immobilized Cd from adsorbed state to mineralized state. After high-phosphate cultured, increased density of P-related groups provided more adsorption sites, while the decomposition of intracellular Poly-P released phosphate ions into cell surface microenvironment, which combined and promoted the formation of Cd3(PO4)2/Cd(H2PO4)2 on cell surface. Cd-contaminated soil remediation experiments applying high-surface-phosphate beared microalgae further showed that more Cd stabilized as a residue fraction within 49 days. This study proposes that the high-phosphate culture strategy is a good way to improve the immobilization of heavy metals in soil induced by microorganisms.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is a sexual dimorphic disease, with adipose tissue playing an essential role. Our previous work showed that female rats fed a high-fat high-fructose diet devoid of cholesterol (HFHFr) developed simple hepatic steatosis dissociated from obesity. This study assessed the impact of the HFHFr diet on the male rat metabolism compared with data obtained for female rats. A total of 16 Sprague Dawley (SD) male rats were fed either a control (standard rodent chow and water) or HFHFr (high-fat diet devoid of cholesterol, plus 10% fructose in drinking water) diet for 3 months. Unlike female rats, and despite similar increases in energy consumption, HFHFr males showed increased adiposity and hyperleptinemia. The expression of hormone-sensitive lipase in the subcutaneous white adipose tissue was enhanced, leading to high free fatty acid and glycerol serum levels. HFHFr males presented hypertriglyceridemia, but not hepatic steatosis, partially due to enhanced liver PPARα-related fatty acid ß-oxidation and the VLDL-promoting effect of leptin. In conclusion, the SD rats showed a sex-related dimorphic response to the HFHFr diet. Contrary to previous results for HFHFr female rats, the male rats were able to expand the adipose tissue, increase fatty acid catabolism, or export it as VLDL, avoiding liver lipid deposition.

Non-ferrous metal mining activities are known to cause ecological irreversible damage in the tailings and surrounding areas as well as heavy metal (HM) contamination. The enhancement of Chlorella-montmorillonite interaction on the remediation of HM contaminated tailings was verified from the lab to the tailings in Daye City, Hubei Province, China. The results showed a positive correlation between the quantity of montmorillonite and the transformation of Pb and Cu into residual and carbonate-binding states, which resulted in a considerable decrease in the leaching ratio. The buildup of tailings fertility throughout this process benefited from montmorillonite's ability to buffer environmental changes and store water. This further offers a required environmental foundation for the rebuilding of microbial community and the growth of herbaceous plants. The structural equation model demonstrated that the interaction between Chlorella and montmorillonite directly affected the stability of HM, and that this interaction also had an impact on the accumulation of organic carbon, total nitrogen, and available phosphorus, which improved the immobilization of Pb, Cu, Cd, and Zn. This work made the first attempt to apply Chlorella-montmorillonite composite to in-situ tailings remediation, and proposed that the combination of inorganic clay minerals and organic microorganisms was an eco-friendly, long-lasting, and efficient method for immobilizing multiple-HMs in mining areas.

INTRODUCTION: In its initial stages, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease presents hypertriglyceridemia and accumulation of lipids in the liver (hepatic steatosis). Bempedoic acid is an ATP:citrate lyase inhibitor that promotes a dual inhibition of the synthesis of cholesterol and fatty acids. However, its effect in the prevention / treatment of hepatic steatosis and hypertriglyceridemia has not been investigated. The aim of our work has been to elucidate whether bempedoic acid, through a mechanism other than ATP:citrate lyase inhibition, reverses these metabolic alterations. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: The study was carried out in female Sprague-Dawley rats fed, for three months, with a high fat diet supplemented with fructose (10% w/v) in drinking water. During the last month, bempedoic acid (30mg/kg/day) was administered to a group of animals. Zoometric and plasmatic parameters were analyzed, gene and protein expression analysis were performed in liver samples and PPAR-PPRE binding activity was determined. RESULTS: Our interventional model developed hepatic steatosis and hypertriglyceridemia. Despite an increase in total caloric intake, there was no increase in body weight of the animals. The administration of bempedoic acid significantly reduced hepatic steatosis and promoted a marked hepatocyte hypertrophy. There was a 66% increase in the liver weight of the animals treated with the drug that was not accompanied by modifications in the markers of inflammation, oxidative stress, or endoplasmic reticulum stress. Bempedoic acid activated the peroxisome proliferator activated nuclear receptor (PPARα) and its target genes. CONCLUSIONS: Bempedoic acid could be an effective therapy for the treatment of fatty liver and associated cardiovascular risk. Bempedoic acid has other mechanisms of action besides the inhibition of ATP: citrate lyase, such as the activation of PPARα, which could explain the reduction in hepatic steatosis and the increase in liver weight observed in animals treated with the drug.

Bempedoic acid (BemA) is an ATP-citrate lyase (ACLY) inhibitor used to treat hypercholesterolemia. We studied the anti-steatotic effect of BemA, and the mechanisms involved, in a model of fatty liver in female rats obtained through the administration of a high-fat diet supplemented with liquid fructose (HFHFr) for three months. In the third month, a group of rats was treated with BemA (30 mg/kg/day) by gavage. Plasma analytes, liver histology, adiposity, and the expression of key genes controlling fatty acid metabolism were determined, and PPAR agonism was explored by using luciferase reporter assays. Our results showed that, compared to HFHFr, BemA-treated rats exhibited lower body weight, higher liver/body weight, and reduced hepatic steatosis. In addition to ACLY inhibition, we found three novel mechanisms that could account for the anti-steatotic effect: (1) reduction of liver ketohexokinase, leading to lower fructose intake and reduced de novo lipogenesis; (2) increased expression of patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing protein 3, a protein related to the export of liver triglycerides to blood; and (3) PPARα agonist activity, leading to increased hepatic fatty acid ß-oxidation. In conclusion, BemA may represent a novel approach to treat hepatic steatosis, and therefore to avoid progression to advanced stages of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has increased over the last decades and may evolve into hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). As HCC is challenging to treat, knowledge on the modifiable risk factors for NAFLD/HCC (e.g. hyper caloric diets rich in fructose) is essential. OBJECTIVE AND DESIGN: We used a model of diethyl nitrosamine-induced hepatocarcinogenesis to investigate the liver cancer-promoting effects of a diet supplemented with 10% liquid fructose, administered to male and female rats for 11 months. A subset of the fructose-supplemented rats received resveratrol (RVT) in the last 4 months of treatment. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Rat livers showed no de visu or histological evidence of liver tumorigenesis. However, we observed metabolic abnormalities that could be related to cancer development mainly in the female fructose-supplemented rats, such as increases in weight, adiposity and hepatic triglyceride levels, as well as hyperglycaemia, hyperuricemia, hyperleptinemia and a reduced insulin sensitivity index, which were partially reversed by RVT. Therefore, we performed a targeted analysis of 84 cancer-related genes in the female liver samples, which revealed expression changes associated with cancer-related pathways. Analysis of individual genes indicated that some changes increased the risk of hepatocarcinogenesis (Sfrp2, Ccl5, Socs3, and Gstp1), while others exerted a protective/preventive effect (Bcl2 and Cdh1). CONCLUSION: Our data clearly demonstrate that chronic fructose supplementation, as the sole dietary intervention, does not cause HCC development in rats.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is a highly prevalent condition without specific pharmacological treatment, characterized in the initial stages by hepatic steatosis. It was suggested that lipid infiltration in the liver might be reduced by caffeine through anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and fatty acid metabolism-related mechanisms. We investigated the effects of caffeine (CAF) and green coffee extract (GCE) on hepatic lipids in lean female rats with steatosis. For three months, female Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a standard diet or a cocoa butter-based high-fat diet plus 10% liquid fructose. In the last month, the high-fat diet was supplemented or not with CAF or a GCE, providing 5 mg/kg of CAF. Plasma lipid levels and the hepatic expression of molecules involved in lipid metabolism were determined. Lipidomic analysis was performed in liver samples. The diet caused hepatic steatosis without obesity, inflammation, endoplasmic reticulum stress, or hepatic insulin resistance. Neither CAF nor GCE alleviated hepatic steatosis, but GCE-treated rats showed lower hepatic triglyceride levels compared to the CAF group. The GCE effects could be related to reductions of hepatic (i) mTOR phosphorylation, leading to higher nuclear lipin-1 levels and limiting lipogenic gene expression; (ii) diacylglycerol levels; (iii) hexosylceramide/ceramide ratios; and (iv) very-low-density lipoprotein receptor expression. In conclusion, a low dose of CAF did not reduce hepatic steatosis in lean female rats, but the same dose provided as a green coffee extract led to lower liver triglyceride levels.

UNLABELLED: There is controversy regarding whether fructose in liquid beverages constitutes another dietary ingredient of high caloric density or introduces qualitative changes in energy metabolism that further facilitate the appearance of metabolic diseases. Central to this issue is the elucidation of the molecular mechanism responsible for the metabolic alterations induced by fructose ingestion. Fructose administration (10% wt/vol) in the drinking water of Sprague-Dawley male rats for 14 days induced hyperleptinemia and hepatic leptin resistance. This was caused by impairment of the leptin-signal transduction mediated by both janus-activated kinase-2 and the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway. The subsequent increase in activity in the liver of the unphosphorylated and active form of the forkhead box O1 nuclear factor, which transrepresses peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha activity, and a lack of activation of the adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase, led to hypertriglyceridemia and hepatic steatosis. These alterations are attributable to two key events: (1) an increase in the amount of suppressor of cytokine signaling-3 protein, which blocks the phosphorylation and activation of janus-activated kinase-2 and Tyr(985) on the long form of the leptin receptor; and (2) a common deficit of phosphorylation in serine/threonine residues of key proteins in leptin-signal transduction pathways. The latter is probably produced by the early activation of protein phosphatase 2A, and further sustained by the accumulation in liver tissue of ceramide, an activator of protein phosphatase 2A, due to incomplete oxidation of fatty acids. CONCLUSION: Our data indicate that fructose ingestion as a liquid solution induces qualitative changes in liver metabolism that lead to metabolic diseases.

BACKGROUND: Considering the structural loss that occurs after surgical procedures for cystic and tumoral pathology, in periodontitis, as well as the maxillary atrophy that determines the rehabilitation with dental implants, it is imperative to find satisfactory solutions. The opportunity provided by the findings in stem cells is a recent introduction in the field of oral surgery, based on the regenerative potential that these cells possess in order to restore defects at different levels of the oral cavity. The aim of this systematic review is to discover the real applications that stem cells may have in our treatments in the near future. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We made a systematic review of the literature on the subject of stem cells to know the publications relating to them in the field of oral surgery since 2000. PRISMA statement was accomplished, as its official flow chart is used. RESULTS: This article draws clinical conclusions from basic research and those conducted in the first clinical cases to apply them in a short period of time to our patients in order to achieve excellence in regenerative therapies. CONCLUSIONS: To summarize, stem cells may be a turning point in tissue regeneration, though the major challenge is to overcome the remaining obstacles before they become a realistic therapeutic alternative. The senescence-accelerated mouse (SAM) is an experimental model of aging, established through phenotypic selection from a common genetic pool of AKR/J mice. Here we use complementary DNA microarray, Western blot, and electrophoretic mobility shift assay to consider whether changes in liver gene expression observed in 5-month-old SAM-prone 8 (P8) mice, compared to SAM-R1 controls, are similar to those reported in aged rodents. Livers from SAM-P8 mice presented 88 differentially expressed transcripts, 59% of which were upregulated and 41% were downregulated. Of these, 14% were related to inflammatory/immunity processes, 10% were related to the xenobiotic metabolism (XM) and 3% to nervous system pathophysiology (NSP). Depressed expression and activity of genes related to XM, and altered expression of genes related to NSP, are similar to changes observed in aged rodents. Increased expression of heat shock protein 1 and Jun-B, reduced activity of activator protein 1 and absence of nuclear factor-kappaB activation indicate the lack of a strong liver inflammatory response in 5-month-old SAM-P8 mice.

Excessive sugar intake has been related to cognitive alterations, but it remains unclear whether these effects are related exclusively to increased energy intake, and the molecular mechanisms involved are not fully understood. We supplemented Sprague-Dawley female rats with 10% w/v fructose in drinking water or with isocaloric glucose solution for 7 months. Cognitive function was assessed through the Morris water maze (MWM) and the novel object recognition (NOR) tests. Plasma parameters and protein/mRNA expression in the frontal cortex and hippocampus were determined. Results showed that only fructose-supplemented rats displayed postprandial and fasting hypertriglyceridemia (1.4 and 1.9-fold, p < 0.05) and a significant reduction in the discrimination index in the NOR test, whereas the results of the MWM test showed no differences between groups. Fructose-drinking rats displayed an abnormal glucose tolerance test and impaired insulin signaling in the frontal cortex, as revealed by significant reductions in insulin receptor substrate-2 protein levels (0.77-fold, p < 0.05) and Akt phosphorylation (0.72-fold, p < 0.05), and increased insulin-degrading enzyme levels (1.86-fold, p < 0.001). Fructose supplementation reduced the expression of antioxidant enzymes and altered the amount of proteins involved in mitochondrial fusion/fission in the frontal cortex. In conclusion, cognitive deficits induced by chronic liquid fructose consumption are not exclusively related to increased caloric intake and are correlated with hypertriglyceridemia, impaired insulin signaling, increased oxidative stress and altered mitochondrial dynamics, especially in the frontal cortex.

SCOPE: The effect of chronic supplementation with simple-sugar solutions on leptin signaling in liver, hypothalamus, and visceral white adipose tissue (vWAT) is studied, which is designed to mimic the temporal pattern of consumption by humans. METHODS AND RESULTS: Solutions of fructose or glucose are isocalorically supplemented (7 months) in female Sprague-Dawley rats consuming ad libitum rodent chow. After sacrifice, plasma and tissue samples (liver, hypothalamus, and vWAT) are collected. Zoometric parameters, plasma analytes, and the tissue expression and activity of markers of leptin signaling are determined by biochemical and molecular biological methods. The two sugars cause different types of adiposopathy. Both sugars induce increases in plasma nonesterified fatty acids, and leptin resistance in the liver and the hypothalamus. Only fructose-supplemented rats show hyperleptinemia, and increased body weight due to a hypertrophy of vWAT, with no signs of leptin-mediated lipolysis. Glucose-supplemented rats show no significant changes in these parameters but present elevated plasma adiponectin concentrations, lipolysis, and inflammatory markers in vWAT, indicating a shift to a nonexpandable adipose tissue phenotype. CONCLUSION: Chronic consumption of fructose places a greater burden on metabolic homeostasis than equivalent consumption of glucose, inducing hyperleptinemia, generalized leptin resistance, and increased body weight due to expanded, hypertrophic vWAT.

La intercambiabilidad de medicamentos representa una necesidad en países en vías de desarrollo, porque brinda la posibilidad de acceder a productos de menor costo, además, permite asegurar eficacia y seguridad en los tratamientos farmacoterapéuticos. El estudio recolectó investigaciones realizadas en el estado peruano, publicadas en bases de datos de alto impacto como Scielo, Sciencedirect, Scopus y Pubmed. De las 553 investigaciones encontradas, sólo diez artículos cumplieron con los criterios de inclusión y exclusión, se identificaron medicamentos como diazepam, prednisona, amoxicilina, doxiciclina, fluconazol, fenitoína sódica, alprazolam, amlodipino, carbamazepina sódica, glibenclamida, moxifloxacino y ácido acetilsalicílico. Todos los artículos analizaron el perfil de disolución mediante el cálculo del factor de similitud f2, mientras, en otros casos, estimaron parámetros como variación de peso, friabilidad, dureza, cuantificación, uniformidad de contenido y perfil de disolución. Los resultados evidencian que nueve medicamentos incluidos en el estudio fueron analizados mediante estudios in vitro a diferentes pH (1,2; 4,5 y 6,8), y cumplieron con presentar un factor de similitud f2 mayor a 50. Se concluye que aún se encuentra en proceso la intercambiabilidad de medicamentos en el estado peruano, y que, mediante alianzas estratégicas con el sector privado, se podría tener una mayor cantidad de alternativas farmacéuticas en la recuperación del paciente.


The medicines' interchangeability represents a necessity in developing countries, because it offers the possibility of accessing lower cost products, it allows to ensure efficacy and safety in pharmacotherapeutic treatments. The study gather researches carried out in the Peruvian state published in high-impact databases such as Scielo, Sciencedirect, Scopus and Pubmed. Of the 553 researches found, only 10 articles met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, drugs such as diazepam, prednisone, amoxicillin, doxycycline, fluconazole, phenytoin sodium, alprazolam, amlodipine, carbamazepine sodium, glibenclamide, moxifloxacin and acetylsalicylic acid were identified. All the articles analyzed the dissolution profile by calculating the similarity factor f2, while, in other cases, they estimated parameters such as weight variation, friability, hardness, quantification, content uniformity, and dissolution profile. The results show that 9 drugs included in the study were analyzed by in vitro studies at different pH (1.2; 4.5 and 6.8), and complied with presenting a similarity factor f2 greater than 50. It is concluded that, the interchangeability of medicines in the Peruvian state is still in process, and that, through strategic alliances with the private sector, a greater number of pharmaceutical alternatives could be had in the patient's recovery.

Fundamento: el liderazgo representa un rasgo importante que debe poseer toda persona encargada de dirigir un grupo. Los cambios organizacionales generados en las oficinas farmacéuticas deben ser asumidos mediante un estilo de liderazgo que permita alcanzar los objetivos y metas planteadas, con el fin de asegurar y optimizar la atención sanitaria. Objetivo: determinar los estilos de liderazgo en profesionales Químico-Farmacéuticos que laboran en establecimientos públicos y privados de la ciudad de Trujillo (Perú). Métodos: estudio descriptivo de corte transversal que incluyó 94 profesionales colegiados que se desempeñan como directores técnicos. En la recolección de datos se empleó como técnica la encuesta y como instrumento al cuestionario Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire , que constó de 36 preguntas en escala de Likert, distribuidas en tres dimensiones: liderazgo transformacional, transaccional y correctivo/pasivo/evitador. Resultados: el 82, 9 % de los profesionales laboran como directores técnicos en el sector privado; el 57, 4 % son del género femenino y más del 60 % presentan un nivel alto de liderazgo. Unidos ambos sectores, los estilos de liderazgo transformacional y transaccional de nivel alto estuvieron presente en un 28,7 % y 61, 7 %, respectivamente; el liderazgo correctivo/pasivo/evitador de nivel medio estuvo presente en 72, 3 % de los profesionales. Asimismo, el liderazgo transformacional de nivel alto estuvo presente en 62, 5 % de los que trabajan en el sector público y en 56, 4 % de los del sector privado; el estilo de liderazgo correctivo/pasivo/evitador en un nivel medio estuvo presente en más del 60 % de los profesionales de ambos sectores. Conclusiones: el estilo de liderazgo más predominante fue el transaccional.


Foundation: leadership represents an important trait that must be presented by every person in charge of directing a group of people. The organizational changes generated in pharmaceutical offices must be assumed through a leadership style that allows achieving the objectives and goals set, in order to ensure and optimize health care. Objective: to determine the Chemist-Pharmaceutical professionals' leadership styles who work in public and private establishments in the city of Trujillo (Peru). Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study that included 94 collegiate professionals who work as technical directors. In data collection, the survey was used as a technique and the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) as an instrument, which consisted of 36 questions on a Likert scale, distributed in three dimensions: transformational, transactional, and corrective/avoidant leadership. Results: 82.9 % of the professionals work as technical directors in the private sector; 57.4 % are female and more than 60 % have a high level of leadership. Together both sectors, the high-level transformational and transactional leadership styles were present in 28.7 % and 61.7 %, respectively; mid-level corrective/passive/avoidant leadership was present in 72.3 % of the professionals. Likewise, high-level transformational leadership was present in 62.5 % of those who work in the public sector and in 56.4 % of those in the private sector; the corrective/passive/avoidant leadership style at a medium level was present in more than 60 % of the professionals in both sectors. Conclusions: the most predominant leadership style was transactional.
