RESUMO
A 24-year-old woman with a two-year history of hypertension was hospitalized for coma and quadriplegia secondary to pontine hemorrhage. A seven-year history of intermittent severe headaches, diaphoresis, and anxiety together with persistent severe hypertension led to the diagnosis of pheochromocytoma. This unusual but devastating manifestation of pheochromocytoma illustrates the importance of excluding remedial forms of hypertension in young patients before initiating antihypertensive therapy.

A study of the lysosomal hydrolases bete-galactosidase, beta-glucuronidase, N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase, and arylsulphatases A and B has been carried out on fibroblasts cultured from seven patients with cystinosis and eight control subjects. beta-Galactosidase activity was found to be consistently lower in cells derived from cystinotics, while the other enzymes studied showed no significant differences between normals and cystinotics.

A 65-year-old woman with known breast carcinoma developed headaches, followed shortly by disequilibrium, vertical diplopia and dysarthria. Cranial computerized tomography (CCT) demonstrated a dense, irregularly enhancing pontine lesion with associated mass effect. She received dexamethasone (Decadron) and radiotherapy and subsequently expired. Postmortem examination disclosed a ruptured brain stem arteriovenous malformation within a massive hemorrhage along with necrotic atypical cells suggestive of metastatic disease.
