RESUMO

An adequate level of health literacy enables people to adopt protective behaviors to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic. Validated instruments are desired to assess such reactions. This study aims to determine the level of health literacy and validity and reliability of the Coronavirus-Related Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLS-COVID-Q22) adapted to Turkish. The present study was carried out with 452 participants in Turkey using an online survey. The scale was translated from English to Turkish using the back-translation technique. The cultural adaptation was outlined in the context of establishing the validity and reliability of the instruments. A coronavirus-related health literacy measure was validated (HLS-COVID-Q22) for the Turkish population through exploratory factorial analysis, followed by a confirmatory factorial analysis. The coronavirus-related health literacy level of the participants was found to be 2.92 (±â€…0.51). Cronbach's alpha internal consistency coefficient was found to be 0.95. A four-factor solution was confirmed with eigenvalues > 1.0, suggesting a four-factor solution and explaining 68.84% of the total variance. It was determined that the χ2/df and root mean square residual, root mean square error of approximation and comparative fit index values in the last model had a good fit and that the normed fit index, goodness-of-fit index and adjusted goodness-of-fit index values were acceptable. The coronavirus-related health literacy level of Turkish adults was moderate. HLS-COVID-Q22 was a reliable and valid instrument for measuring coronavirus-related health literacy in the Turkish population. Promoting population-based health literacy and making decisions on accurate and reliable information are important in coping with the epidemic.

PURPOSE: This study aims to evaluate the effect of education given with motivational interviewing techniques on mothers of children with allergic asthma aged 4-11 years on asthma control and knowledge level. METHODS: The research was designed according to the CONSORT checklist with a randomized controlled design. 76 participants were randomly assigned to either an intervention (n = 38) or control group (n = 38). The intervention group received asthma education utilizing motivational interviewing techniques from a pediatric nurse. The control group received no further education. The Childhood Asthma Control Test and Asthma Knowledge Level Questionnaire were used to collect data. The control group received only education at the time of discharge. RESULTS: The mothers' asthma control and asthma knowledge scores in the experimental group were significantly higher than in the control group (p < 0.001). In the experimental group, asthma control scores increased from 14.29 ± 4.27 to 21.37 ± 1.57 after education. The mean score of the asthma knowledge score increased from 54.74 ± 10.89 to 73.47 ± 7.17 after intervention. CONCLUSIONS: The study showed that education using motivational interviewing techniques for mothers of children with allergic asthma increased their knowledge and positively affected asthma control. IMPLICATIONS TO PRACTICE: Education is important in improving mothers' knowledge about allergic asthma. Asthma education using motivational interviewing techniques should be provided when their children are newly diagnosed. Education practices should be implemented as a policy in hospitals and pediatric clinics, and nurses should be supported in ensuring the implementation of education practices.

Our study aimed to determine the level of coronavirus-related health literacy among school administrators and the factors that influence this. The sample of this cross-sectional study consisted of 402 school administrators serving in primary, secondary and high schools in Ankara. The data were collected between September 2021 and February 2022 using the descriptive characteristics questionnaire and the Coronavirus-Related Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLS-COVID-Q22). It was seen that 64.4% of the participants were male, 34.6% were 40 years old or younger and 35.6% were working in primary schools; 77.6% of the participants had a sufficient, 16.2% had a problematic and 6.2% had an inadequate level of coronavirus-related health literacy. Age, gender, chronic disease status, type of school they work in, level of knowledge about coronavirus, level of confusion due to knowledge about coronavirus, willingness to be vaccinated, believing that vaccines are safe/effective/compatible with their religious beliefs were found to affect coronavirus-related health literacy (p < 0.05). Gender, age, information satisfaction on coronavirus, confusion due to information on coronavirus and 'Overall, I believe that vaccinations are effective' explained 24.9% of HLS-COVID-Q22 variance (Adjusted R2 = 0.249, F = 13.080, p < 0.001). This study found the coronavirus-related health literacy level among school administrators to be sufficient. It found that their level of health literacy was affected by gender, age, chronic disease status, type of school they worked at, level of knowledge about coronavirus, level of confusion due to information about coronavirus, desire to be vaccinated and their thoughts about vaccines.

Non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) implemented to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic halted everyday life in higher education along with social and psychological impacts. The objective of our study was to explore the factors related to sense of coherence (SoC) from a gender perspective among university students in Turkey. This is a cross-sectional survey conducted online with a convenience sampling method as part of the international COVID-Health Literacy (COVID-HL) Consortium. SoC was measured by a nine-item questionnaire that was adapted to the Turkish language, including socio-demographic information and health status, including psychological well-being, psychosomatic complaints, and future anxiety (FA). 1595 students from four universities, of whom 72% were female, participated in the study. Cronbach's alpha for the SoC scale was 0.75. Based on the median split of the individual scores, levels of SoC showed no statistically significant difference according to gender. Logistic regression analysis indicated that higher SoC was associated with medium and high subjective social status, studying in private universities, high psychological well-being, low FA, and none/one psychosomatic complaint. While results were similar among female students, type of university and psychological well-being showed no statistically significant association with SoC among males. Our results indicate that structural (subjective social status) and contextual (type of university) factors, along with gender-based variations, are associated with SoC among university students in Turkey.

Cancer is a global public health problem, but its exact prevalence in people with intellectual disabilities is still uncertain. This population, with limited health skills and complex health needs, faces many challenges in cancer prevention, screening, timely diagnosis and treatment. Furthermore, they are often underrepresented in general cancer prevention and screening policies across Europe, leading to widened disparities in health outcomes and premature mortality. Thus, unified national and local policies are needed to reduce inequalities and promoting a pan-European inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities. Our goal is to raise public awareness of this issue, including the involvement of people with intellectual disabilities, and promote engagement from relevant stakeholders. The COST Action 'Cancer- Understanding Prevention in Intellectual Disabilities' (CUPID) project will address health inequalities faced by people with intellectual disabilities in relation to cancer, and support the development of policy recommendations specifically tailored to their unique cognitive and healthcare needs, having a positive long-term impact on quality of life.

Health workers play an important role in the early detection of cancer and encouraging people to participate in screening tests. This study aimed to analyze the knowledge, attitude, and practice of health workers regarding cancer screening and to determine variables that affect their behavior in undergoing in screening tests. This descriptive study was conducted among 475 health workers (84 assistant doctors, 306 nurses, 65 midwives, and 20 other professionals) in a university hospital. The questionnaire included sociodemographic questions (age, profession, years of experience, and family history of cancer) and questions about the workers' knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding cancer screening. It was found that half of the participants had inadequate knowledge of cancer screening methods (50.3% for Pap smear, 57.5% for mammography, 68.4% for colonoscopy, and 54.3% for fecal occult blood). Although the attitudes of the health workers were mostly positive (above 90% for all screening tests), their practice of screening methods was low (for example 25.7% of them practiced mammography and 4.2% pap smear). Older health workers, those with a family history of cancer, and those with more than 11 years of experience tended to participate in cancer screening tests more often than health workers who were younger, had no family history of cancer history, and whose experience was less than 10 years (p < 0.05). A health worker's profession was not an important factor in their practice of undergoing screening tests (p > 0.05).

OBJECTIVE: Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women both in developed and developing countries. It has a higher mortality rate in low and middle income countries due to the late-stage diagnosis. The principal aim of this study was to investigate what patients with breast cancer did before presenting to Turgut Özal Medical Center and its relationship with late stage diagnosis. The study also aimed to identify the level of patients' perceived social support. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 200 patients with breast cancer who were treated at the chemotherapy unit during 2013 and 2014. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 51.16±1.10 years and 60% of the women were graduates of elemantary school. The majority of patients (69.5%) noticed breast mass as the first symptom and 56.5% were diagnosed at later stages. Thirty-four percent of the patients delayed their visit to a health care centers after realizing the first symptom. No statistically significant relationship was determined between women's education level, residential area, age, the first symptom noticed, stages of tumor, and patients and system-related delay (p>0.05). In terms of family history of breast cancer, there was a significant difference between patient-related and system-related delays (p<0.05). The family support score (24.8±4.6) was higher than those of friends and husbands (23.8±5.5, 21.3±6.4, respectively). The husband support score was statistically different in terms of intimacy between women and their husbands after disease (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that overcoming barriers related to patients and the system will lead to early-stage diagnosis, which in turn will result in higher survival rates of patients with breast cancer. As awareness and knowledge level of women about cancer increases, they will visit health care centers earlier where they can receive more comprehensive treatment.
