PURPOSE: Currently, studies on serologic diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori-associated gastric cancer (GC) in Latin America are scarce. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the association between H. pylori serology tests in patients with early precancerous lesions or GC, when compared with non-atrophic gastritis in Colombia, Paraguay, and Mexico, three countries in Latin America with a high prevalence of H. pylori infection but contrasting rates of GC mortality. METHODS: Gastric biopsies and blood samples were obtained from patients attending the gastroenterology or oncology services of hospitals in the three participating countries. IgG antibodies against H. pylori whole-cell antigens and CagA were tested in 1,117 sera using an enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay. RESULTS: Positive and significant associations were shown for H. pylori seropositivity and preneoplastic lesions in Mexico (OR 2.0; 95 % CI 1.1-3.4) but not in Colombia (OR 1.2; 95 % CI 0.6-2.1) or Paraguay (OR 1.5; 95 % CI 0.6-3.2); no significant associations were shown for GC in any country. CagA seropositivity was associated with preneoplasic lesions in all three countries (ORs = 2.1, 3.0, and 3.1 for Mexico, Colombia, and Paraguay, respectively), and with GC only in Colombia (OR 4.3; 95 % CI 2.1-9.2). CONCLUSIONS: In countries of Latin America, the IgG CagA test might be a useful biomarker for patients with gastric preneoplastic lesions and for those at risk of developing gastric cancer.

The gastrointestinal absorption of most drugs follows a first-order kinetics, whereby a constant fraction of the total drug is absorbed in each equal time interval. Although this related absorption principle is applicable to the most of the therapeutically used drugs, it remains unclear for poorly water-soluble compounds such as the benzimidazole anthelmintics in ruminants. The goal of the current work was to characterize the albendazole (ABZ) metabolites plasma disposition kinetics after ABZ administration at different dosages to nematode-infected lambs. Eighteen Corriedale lambs artificially infected with a resistant Haemonchus contortus strain were allocated into three groups and intraruminally treated with ABZ at either 5 (ABZ(5)), 15 (ABZ(15)) or 45 (ABZ(45)) mg/kg. Blood samples were collected up to 120 h post-treatment, and the collected plasma was analysed by high-performance liquid chromatography. The estimated pharmacokinetic parameters were statistically compared using parametric and nonparametric tests. None of the animals involved in the current trial showed any adverse events during the study. While ABZ parent drug was not recovered in the bloodstream, the area under the concentration vs time curve (AUC) of the active ABZ-sulphoxide (ABZSO) metabolite increased significantly (P<0.05) from 21.0 (ABZ(5)) up to 158.6 (ABZ(15)) and 389.7 µg·h/mL (ABZ(45)), which indicates some type of nonproportionality in the relationship between dose level and drug systemic exposure. The overall kinetic disposition of the inactive sulphone metabolite did not change after treatment at threefold the therapeutic ABZ dosage. However, significantly (P<0.05) higher AUC, C(max) and mean residence time values were observed after the administration of the highest dosage level. The higher dosages accounted for a significantly (P<0.05) enhancement of the ABZSO peak plasma concentration, which were obtained at delayed times post-treatment. High correlations between AUC(0-LOQ) and C(max) and nematode counts were observed, with Spearman's coefficients of -0.83 and -0.84, respectively. The results obtained in the current experiment show that increasing the dose of ABZ in sheep is clearly associated with enhanced plasma ABZ metabolites exposure. The data showed a nonproportionality on the gastrointestinal absorption of ABZ in nematode-infected lambs.

A pharmaco-parasitological assessment of four different albendazole (ABZ) formulations was carried out in lambs infected with multiple resistant gastrointestinal (GI) nematodes. The comparative drug systemic exposure profiles (ABZ sulphoxide plasma concentrations) and anthelmintic efficacies (clinical endpoint measured through the faecal nematode eggs reduction counts) were determined for a reference formulation (RF) and three different test (T1, T2, T3) generic ABZ preparations. Fifty (50) Corriedale lambs naturally infected with multiple resistant GI nematodes were allocated into five experimental groups (n = 10). Animals in each group received treatment with either the RF, one of the test ABZ formulations (5 mg/kg by the intraruminal route) or were kept as untreated control. Blood samples were collected over 48 h post-treatment. ABZ parent drug was not recovered in the bloodstream. The ABZ sulphoxide (ABZSO) and sulphone (ABZSO(2) ) metabolites were measured in plasma by ultraviolet high-performance liquid chromatography over 36-48 h post-treatment. A faecal nematode egg count reduction test (FECRT) was performed at day 10th post-treatment to lambs from all treated and untreated groups, which indicated the predominance of nematodes with high level of resistance to ABZ. Both ABZSO C(max) and AUC(0-LOQ) values obtained for the RF (pioneer product) were significantly higher (P < 0.05) than those obtained for the T1 and T3 preparations. Based on the currently available bioequivalence criteria, the test (generic) ABZ formulations under evaluation could not be considered equivalent to the RF regarding the rate (C(max) ) and extent (AUC(0-LOD) ) of drug absorption (indirectly estimated through the ABZSO metabolite). A large variation in nematode egg counts did not permit to obtain statistically significant differences among formulations. However, a favourable trend in the efficacy against the most resistant nematodes was observed for the formulations with the highest ABZSO systemic exposure.

New therapeutic strategies based on the search of alternative formulations of albendazole (ABZ) and albendazole sulphoxide (ABZSO) are under current development to optimize posology and antiparasite efficacy in dogs. In an incomplete block design, nine dogs were randomly divided into three groups (n = 6). Treatments were carried out in two phases as follows. Phase I: Group I (treatment A), animals received ABZ at 25 mg/kg of conventional formulation. Group II (treatment B), dogs received 25 mg/kg of a modified poloxamer-ABZ formulation. Group III (treatment C), animals were treated with ABZSO in equimolar amount to ABZ doses. After 21 days of wash-out period the experiment was repeated (Phase II). Blood samples were collected over 24 h and subsequently analysed by high performance liquid chromatography. ABZSO and ABZSO(2) were the analytes recovered in plasma. Significant higher (P < 0.001) ABZSO area under the concentration-time curve (+500%) and C(max) (+487%) values were obtained for the treatment C in comparison with treatments A and B. However, no statistical differences on pharmacokinetic parameters were found between formulations A and B. In conclusion, the enhanced plasma concentration profile obtained for the ABZSO formulation used in treatment C may contribute to optimize the anthelmintic control in dogs.

The ROBoCoP project is launched within the EU COST Action CA16113 "CliniMARK" aiming to increase the number of clinically validated biomarkers and focused on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) biomarker development and validation. ROBoCoP encompasses two consecutive studies consisting of a pilot study followed by a field study. The pilot study is a longitudinal exposure assessment and biomarker study aiming at: 1-understanding the suitability of the candidate biomarkers in surveying populations at risk such as workers exposed to COPD causing agents; 2-determining the best sampling plan with respect to the half-life of the candidate biomarkers; 3-implementing and validating the sampling procedures and analytical methods; 4-selecting the best suitable biomarkers to be measured in the field. Each study participant is surveyed every day during the 6-8 h work-shifts for two consecutive weeks. The field study has an implementation research designe that enabled us to demonstrate the applicability of the standardized protocol for biomarker measurements in occupational settings while also assessing the biomarkers' validity. ROBoCoP will focus on particulate matter (PM) exposure measurements, exposure biomarkers and a series of effect biomarkers, including markers of lipoperoxidation: 8-isoprostane, malondialdehyd in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) and urine, potential markers of nitrosative stress: NO2-, NO3- and formate anion in EBC; markers of DNA oxidation: 8-hydroxy-2'deoxyguanosine in EBC and urine, marker of genotoxicity: micronuclei in buccal cells, and oxidative potential in exhaled air (OPEA). OPEA appears particularly promising as a clinical biomarker for detecting COPD, and will be tested independently and as part of a biomarker panel. COPD diagnosis will be performed by an experienced occupational physician according to international diagnostic standards and confirmed by a pulmonologist.This research will include approximatively 300 underground subway workers randomly selected from the personnel registry of a large Parisian transport company. Underground subways are suggested as the most PM polluted urban transport environment. We believe this occupational exposure is relevant for biomonitoring of workers and early detection of respiratory diseases.

A double-domain activation-associated secreted protein (dd-Co-ASP) isolated from the bovine small intestinal parasite Cooperia oncophora was previously shown to be an effective vaccine candidate to protect calves against a homologous challenge infection. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the dd-Co-ASP protein, purified from a Belgian C. oncophora isolate, would offer protection against a C. oncophora isolate from the southern hemisphere as well as other Cooperia species such as C. punctata in cattle and C. curticei in sheep. Two vaccination studies were performed, i.e. one in cattle and one in sheep, in which the protective effects of dd-Co-ASP, supplemented with Quil A as an adjuvant, were compared with an adjuvant control. Whereas our results showed a 75 % reduction in Cooperia spp. cumulative faecal egg counts, the results obtained in sheep demonstrated that dd-Co-ASP was ineffective in raising a protective immune response against a C. curticei challenge infection. Even though sequence analysis of the dd-Co-ASP gene revealed restricted sequence heterogeneity in the double domain ASP within and between bovine Cooperia species, the results of the vaccine study suggest that there is sufficient conservation at the protein level to yield cross-protection, holding promise for the development of a general Cooperia vaccine for use in cattle.

Subway particulate toxicity results from in vitro and in vivo studies diverge and call for applied human research on outcomes from chronic exposures and potential exposure biomarkers. We aimed to (1) quantify airborne particulate matter (PM) concentrations (mass and number) and metal concentrations in exhaled breath condensate (EBC), urine, and PM; (2) investigate their associations (EBC vs. PM vs. urine); and (3) assess the relevance of EBC in biomonitoring. Nine subway workers in three jobs: station agents, locomotive operators and security guards were monitored during their 6-h shifts over two consecutive weeks. Six-hour weighed average mass concentrations expressed as PM10, PM2.5 and their metal concentrations were determined. Urine and EBC samples were collected pre- and post-shift. Ultrafine particle (UFP) number concentrations were quantified in PM and EBC samples. Metal concentrations in urine and EBC were standardized by creatinine and EBC volume, respectively, and log-transformed. Associations were investigated using Pearson correlation and linear mixed regression models, with participant's ID as random effect. PM concentrations were below occupational exposure limits (OEL) and varied significantly between jobs. Locomotive operators had the highest exposure (189 and 137 µg/m3 for PM10 and PM2.5, respectively), while station agents had the highest UFP exposure (1.97 × 104 particles/cm3). Five metals (Al, Fe, Zn, Cu, and Mn) in PM2.5 and three (Al, Fe, and Zn) in PM10 were above the limit of quantification (LOQ). Fe, Cu, Al and Zn were the most abundant by mass fraction in PM. In EBC, the metal concentrations in decreasing order were: Zn > Cu > Ni > Ba > Mn. Security guards had the highest EBC metal concentrations, and in particular Zn and Cu. Urinary metal concentrations in decreasing order were: Si > Zn > Mo > Ti > Cu > Ba ≈ Ni > Co. All urinary metal concentrations from the subway workers were similar to concentrations found in the general population. A statistically significant relationship was found for ultrafine particle number concentrations in PM and in EBC. Zn and Cu concentrations in post-shift EBC were associated with Zn and Cu concentrations in PM10 and with post-shift urinary Zn and Cu concentrations. Therefore, EBC appears a relevant matrix for assessing exposure to UFP in human biomonitoring when inhalation is a primary route of exposure. We found different temporal variation patterns between particle and metal exposures in three matrices (PM, urine, EBC) quantified daily over two full weeks in subway workers. These patterns might be related to metal oxidation, particulates' solubility and size as well as their lung absorption capabilities, which need to be further explored in toxicological research. Further research should also focus on understanding possible influences of low chronic exposures to subway particulates on health in larger cohorts.

We recently delineated the importance of a type VI secretion system (T6SS) gene cluster in the virulence of diarrheal isolate SSU of Aeromonas hydrophila and showed that VasH, a sigma(54) activator and T6SS component, was involved in the production of its associated effectors, e.g., hemolysin-coregulated protein. To identify additional T6SS effectors and/or secreted proteins, we subjected culture supernatants from deletion mutants of A. hydrophila, namely, a Delta act mutant (a T2SS-associated cytotoxic enterotoxin-encoding gene) and a Delta act Delta vasH mutant, to 2-dimensional gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometric analysis. Based on these approaches, we identified a member of the VgrG protein family, VgrG1, that contained a vegetative insecticidal protein (VIP-2) domain at its carboxyl-terminal end. Consequently, the vgrG1 gene was cloned in pBI-EGFP and pET-30a vectors to be expressed in HeLa Tet-Off cells and Escherichia coli, respectively. We assessed the ADP-ribosyltransferase (ADPRT) activity of various domains of purified recombinant VgrG1 (rVgrG1) and provided evidence that only the full-length VgrG1, as well as its carboxyl-terminal domain encoding the VIP-2 domain, showed ADPRT activity. Importantly, bacterium-host cell interaction was needed for the T6SS to induce cytotoxicity in eukaryotic cells, and we demonstrated translocation of VgrG1. Furthermore, our data indicated that expression of the genes encoding the full-length VgrG1 and its carboxyl-terminal domain in HeLa Tet-Off cells disrupted the actin cytoskeleton, which was followed by a decrease in cell viability and an increase in apoptosis. Taken together, these findings demonstrated for the first time that VgrG1 of A. hydrophila possessed actin ADPRT activity associated with its VIP-2 domain and that this domain alone was able to induce a rounded phenotype in HeLa Tet-Off cells, followed by apoptosis mediated by caspase 9 activation.

Goodpasture's syndrome is a rare autoimmune disorder characterized by rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis (RPGN) and alveolar hemorrhage in the presence of antiglomerular basement membrane (anti-GBM) antibodies. Central nervous system involvement is highly unusual in the absence of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies. We report the case of a 20-year-old man with RPGN accompanied by bloody sputum, tonic-clonic seizure and high titers of anti-GBM antibody. After treatment with immunosuppressants and plasmapheresis, the patient showed reduced anti-GBM antibody titers and improved neurologic and respiratory symptoms, but renal failure persisted, requiring hemodialysis. Twenty months later, with the disease in remission, he underwent deceased-donor renal transplantation.

Bloodstream infection (BSI) is one of the main causes of sepsis and death in newborns. The relative importance of nosocomial and non-nosocomial agents in developing countries is not clear. We conducted a prospective study of newborns hospitalized with a first episode of BSI in order to classify it as early, late or nosocomial, describe the clinical and microbiological characteristics, and explore risk factors between hospital-acquired vs community-acquired BSI (HA-BSI vs CA-BSI). Twenty-seven newborns with a first episode of BSI were identified. Streptococcus agalactiae and coagulase negative Staphylococcus were the main agents in CA-BSI and HA-BSI, respectively. The only significant intrinsic risk factor between HA-BSI and CA-BSI was gestational age. The frequent finding of S. agalactiae warrants routine screening and prophylaxis in pregnant women. The risk factors for HA-BSI were mostly extrinsic, and thus, susceptible of being modified.

Mining activities lead to important physical, chemical and biological effects on soil properties, generating severe impacts in the establishment and maintenance of vegetation. Assisted phytoremediation can be considered an environmentally friendly approach for soil remediation. In this study, two mining soils (PORT and GAM) were treated with 10%, by mass, of the following amendments: manure biochars prepared at 450 °C (BMW450) and 600 °C (BMW600), hydrochars prepared by hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of manure at 190 °C (HWM190) and 240 °C (HMW240) and manure waste (MW). Brassica napus was used as a phytoextraction species. After 45 days of plant growth, soil samples were widely characterized, including microbial biomass carbon, enzymatic activity and metal content. In addition, plant biomass production, bioconcentration factor, translocation factor and metal uptake were determined. Experimental results showed that addition of biochars improved the As uptake by Brassica napus in both soils but just in the roots increasing bioconcentration factor between 22.1 and 39.5% for GAM soil and between 28.6 and 53.4% for PORT soil. Brassica napus cannot be considered as Zn accumulator in GAM soil samples and in the case of PORT samples, only the addition of BMW600 and HMW240 enhanced the phytoextraction process of Zn on the roots. Soil enzyme activity improved in hydrochar amended soils.

Exposure to environmental and occupational particulate matter (PM) induces health effects on the cardio-pulmonary system. In addition, associations between exposure to PM and metabolic syndromes like diabetes mellitus or obesity are now emerging in the literature. Collection of exhaled breath condensate (EBC) is an appealing non-invasive technique to sample pulmonary fluids. This hypothesis-generating study aims to (1) validate an ion chromatography method allowing the robust determination of different metabolism-related molecules (lactate, formate, acetate, propionate, butyrate, pyruvate, nitrite, nitrate) in EBC; (2) apply this method to EBC samples collected from workers exposed to quartz (a known inflammatory particle), to soapstone (a less inflammatory particle than quartz), as well as to controls. A multi-compound standard solution was used to determine the linearity range, detection limit, repeatability and bias from spiked EBC. The biological samples were injected without further treatment into an ion chromatograph with a conductivity detector. RTube® were used for field collection of EBC from 11 controls, 55 workers exposed to soapstone and 12 volunteers exposed to quartz dust. The analytical method used proved to be adequate for quantifying eight anions in EBC samples. Its sub-micromolar detection limits and repeatability, combined with a very simple sample preparation, allowed an easy and fast quantification of different glycolysis or nitrosative stress metabolites. Using multivariate discriminant analysis to maximize differences between groups, we observed a different pattern of anions with a higher formate/acetate ratio in the EBC samples for quartz exposed workers compared to the two other groups. We hypothesize that a modification of the metabolic signature could be induced by exposure to inflammatory particles like quartz and might be observed in the EBC via a change in the formate/acetate ratio.

Little is known about the dynamics of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and subsequent development of high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN2/3), particularly in women >30 years of age. This information is needed to assess the impact of HPV vaccines and consider new screening strategies. A cohort of 1728 women 15-85 years old with normal cytology at baseline was followed every 6 months for an average of 9 years. Women with squamous intraepithelial lesions were referred for biopsy and treatment. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate the median duration of infection and Cox regression analysis was undertaken to assess determinants of clearance and risk of CIN2/3 associated with HPV persistence. No difference in the likelihood of clearance was observed by HPV type or woman's age, with the exception of lower clearance for HPV16 infection in women under 30 years of age. Viral load was inversely associated with clearance. In conclusion, viral load is the main determinant of persistence, and persistence of HPV16 infections carry a higher risk of CIN2/3.

Data from two microseismic field experiments in northern Chile revealed an elongated cluster of earthquakes in the subducted Nazca plate at a depth of about 100 kilometers in which down-dip tensional events were consistently shallower than a family of compressional earthquakes. This double seismic zone shows a distribution of stresses of opposite polarity relative to that observed in other double seismic zones in the world. The distribution of stresses in northern Chile supports the notion that at depths of between 90 to 150 kilometers, the basalt to eclogite transformation of the subducting oceanic crust induces tensional deformation in the upper part of the subducted slab and compressional deformation in the underlying mantle.

A great earthquake (surface-wave magnitude, 7.8) occurred along the coast of central Chile on 3 March 1985, causing heavy damage to coastal towns. Intense foreshock activity near the epicenter of the main shock occurred for 11 days before the earthquake. The aftershocks of the 1985 earthquake define a rupture area of 170 by 110 square kilometers. The earthquake was forecast on the basis of the nearly constant repeat time (83 +/- 9 years) of great earthquakes in this region. An analysis of previous earthquakes suggests that the rupture lengths of great shocks in the region vary by a factor of about 3. The nearly constant repeat time and variable rupture lengths cannot be reconciled with time- or slip-predictable models of earthquake recurrence. The great earthquakes in the region seem to involve a variable rupture mode and yet, for unknown reasons, remain periodic. Historical data suggest that the region south of the 1985 rupture zone should now be considered a gap of high seismic potential that may rupture in a great earthquake in the next few tens of years.

RESUMO

Light-chain deposition disease (LCDD) is an uncommon condition in which monoclonal light chains are deposited in different organs causing varying degrees of tissue damage. We report the case of a 56-year-old male with progressive renal failure as the first manifestation of LCDD without initial evidence of monoclonal immunoglobulin protein in either serum or urine. The patient later developed severe systemic disease with rapid multiple organ involvement. Finally, he died 2 months after diagnosis, despite steroid and cyclophosphamide therapy.

The geographical scale of genetic structure in a continuous population is highly dependent on its breeding system and dispersion capabilities, and this knowledge is important for the study of population dynamics as well as for conservation purposes. In the present study, spatial autocorrelation statistics and intersimple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers were used to describe the genetic structure of a natural population of a prominent aromatic plant, Lippia origanoides, native to the Chicamocha Canyon in northeastern Colombia. For this purpose, individuals were sampled from two localities within the Chicamocha Canyon, where the species is abundant and continuously distributed. Cluster (principal coordinate analysis (PCO) and unweighted pair group method using arithmetic averages (UPGMA)), analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) and Bayesian analyses revealed a low level of genetic differentiation among the two localities, suggesting that they belong to a single population. Genetic diversity levels in this population, described as the percentage of polymorphic loci (P=86.21%) and quantified using Shannon's diversity index (I=0.453) and the average panmictic heterozygosity (HB=0.484), were shown to be comparable to or higher than that in other plant species with allogamous breeding systems and to other related Verbenaceae species. Fine-scale autocorrelation analyses showed a pattern consistent with the classical model of isolation by distance with moderate but significant levels of local spatial structure. Our results suggest that sampling individuals at distances greater than approximately 1.2 km may result in the collection of different genotypes, which could help preserve the levels of genetic diversity in a propagation programme. The causes of this spatial pattern are currently unknown and could be influenced by many contemporary factors such as restricted seed dispersal and/or short-distance pollen movement, among others.

As a consequence of an increased flux through the sorbitol pathway fructose levels rise in various tissues in diabetes. Also, in vitro nonenzymatic fructosylation of protein induces the generation of fluorescence at a rate 10 times greater than glucosylation. The administration of sorbinil, an aldose reductase inhibitor known to lower tissue fructose concentration, to experimental diabetic rats led to a decrease in the fluorescence related to advanced Maillard products in their skin collagen. This effect is consistent with the in vivo occurrence of nonenzymatic fructosylation of collagen. A potential pathogenetic role for this posttranslational modification in diabetic complications should be considered.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis in infants and children is a sign of continuous transmission. The present article describes the distribution and the trend in incidence rates of new tuberculosis cases in 0-15-year-olds in Cuba. METHODS: Incidence rates and their trend were estimated by provinces and age groups for the 1994-2003 period. Distribution and overall variation percentages, annual average rates, and rates and percentages according to classification were determined. RESULTS: The incidence rate decreased from 0.76 x 10(5) in 1994 to 0.31 in 2003 (59.2% of the overall reduction and 6.6% of the annual average reduction). The highest rate (1.06 x 10(5)) was found in 1995 (26 cases). In almost all provinces, the incidence trend decreased, except in the City of Havana, Sancti Spíritus, Santiago de Cuba, and the Isle of Youth. Childhood tuberculosis was mainly pulmonary (69.6%). Among the affected population, the highest percentages were found in the groups aged 10-14 years (35.6%) and 1-4 years (35.2%). CONCLUSIONS: Tuberculosis is infrequent and is extremely uncommon in infants. Notification is low throughout the country and the overall trend shows a steady decrease.

A particle exposure assessment based on the dose deposited in the lungs would be the gold standard for the evaluation of any resulting health effects. Measuring particles in exhaled breath condensate (EBC)-a matrix containing water and airway lining fluid-could help to evaluate particle retention in the lungs. This study aimed to (1) validate a nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA) method for determining the particle number concentration and their hydrodynamic size distribution in EBC, and (2) apply this method to EBC collected from workers exposed to soapstone (n = 55) or quartz dust (n = 12) and controls (n = 11). A standard latex bead solution was used to determine the linear range, limit of detection (LOD), repeatability (coefficient of variation, CV), and bias in spiked EBC. An LM10 NanoSight instrument with NTA version 3.1 software was used for measurement. RTubes® were used for field collection of EBC. The repeatability obtained for a D50 size distribution in EBC showed less than 8% variability, with a bias <7%. The particle concentration was linear in the range ≤2.5 × 108 particles ml-1 with a LOD of 4 × 106 particles ml-1. A recovery of 117 ± 20% at 6.2 × 107 particles ml-1 was obtained with a CV <10% and a bias <20%. EBC from workers exposed to quartz, who experienced the largest exposure to silica particles, consistently exhibited a statistically significant (p < 0.01) higher concentration of particles in their EBC, with a size distribution shift towards larger values than the other groups. Results showed that the NTA technique performed well for characterizing the size distribution and concentrations of particles in EBC. The technique needs to be corroborated with a larger population of workers.
