RESUMO

In the research, the contents of heavy metals, Al, Cd and Pb, in the hair of individuals who reside in similar environmental conditions were spectrometrically determined with the use of atomic emission spectrometryinductively coupled plasma spectrophotometer. The relation to their tobacco smoking habit, age and sex was established. It was observed that the level of all three determined elements was generally higher in the hair of smokers in comparison to hair of non-smokers in both younger and older age groups. In addition, it has been observed that, in the group of elderly people over 50 years old, there was an increase in the content of aluminium, cadmium and lead both in smokers and non-smokers, irrespective of their sex. The sex-related differences in the content of the investigated elements were not unidirectional, and only in few cases did they reveal statistical significance.

RESUMO

In the research, the content of bioelements (Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, and Cu) in the hair of individuals who reside in similar environmental conditions was spectrometrically determined with the use of AES-ICP spectrophotometer. The relation to their tobacco-smoking habit, age, and sex was established. It was observed that the results obtained were in the range of the content identified for the Polish population. Tobacco smokers had a decreased content of all the bioelements in question, compared to non-smokers, which apparently resulted from a decreased supply (lesser appetite) and reduced absorption caused by disturbances in the digestive system functions. Also, it has been observed that in the group of elderly people, over 50 years old, there was a fall in the content of calcium, magnesium, and iron both in smokers and non-smokers, irrespective of their sex. The sex-related differences in the content of the investigated elements were not unidirectional and only in few cases did they reveal statistical significance.

RESUMO

This paper presents species of fungi of high toxicity. Their consumption might have serious consequences for health and in many cases it might lead to death. Toxic compounds present in fungi have also been characterised, mechanisms of their toxic activity have been presented and clinical symptoms of poisoning have been described. Hallucinogenic mushrooms have also been mentioned as they have recently become a serious problem: many people use them to intoxicate themselves. There are also species of mushrooms that can be consumed under certain conditions since they can occasionally trigger off serious disturbances for the functioning of organisms.

RESUMO

In this work we have ventured to establish the dependencies between taste sensitivity for four basic tastes: sweet, salty, sour and bitter and endogenous factors such as sex and age and one exogenous factor, namely cigarette smoking. 471 randomly selected people, including 194 men and 277 women of different age were examined. Individual taste sensitivity was determined in the examined group, by means of saccharose, sodium chloride, acetic acid and quinine solutions. This examination showed that individual sensitivity limits range greatly to encompass varying concentrations of given taste substances. Values of individual sensitivity thresholds for stimulus substances and sensory minimum values obtained in this work showed that a substantial part of the examined people identified individual tastes at concentrations to a great extent exceeding mean threshold values. It can be supposed that those were cases of hypogeusia. There were also some instances of ageusia--a complete lack of sensitivity for sweet and bitter tastes. It was showed that cigarette smoking influences taste sensitivity of the examined people to a small extent. The changes observed were diversified and, in the majority of cases, statistically irrelevant. It can be assumed that taste receptor deficits caused by toxic compounds present in cigarette smoke are compensated by other senses. The conducted research pointed to no particular connection between identification thresholds of four basic senses and the age of the examined people. It can be caused by great diversification of individual threshold values. The research shows that, to a certain extent, taste sensitivity depends on gender. Generally speaking, women exhibit greater taste sensitivity in comparison to men. It seems that these differences are of hormonal nature.
