RESUMO

The Cosmic Gems arc is among the brightest and highly magnified galaxies observed at redshift z ∼ 10.21. However, it is an intrinsically UV faint galaxy, in the range of those now thought to drive the reionization of the universe2-4. Hitherto the smallest features resolved in a galaxy at a comparable redshift are between a few hundreds and a few tens of parsecs5,6. Here we report JWST observations of the Cosmic Gems. The light of the galaxy is resolved into five star clusters located in a region smaller than 70 parsec. They exhibit minimal dust attenuation and low metallicity, ages younger than 50 Myr and intrinsic masses of ∼ 106 M⊙. Their lensing-corrected sizes are approximately 1 pc, resulting in stellar surface densities near 105 M⊙ /pc2, three orders of magnitude higher than typical young star clusters in the local universe7. Despite the uncertainties inherent to the lensing model, they are consistent with being gravitationally bound stellar systems, i.e., proto-globular clusters (proto-GCs). We conclude that star cluster formation and feedback likely contributed to 3 shape the properties of galaxies during the epoch of reionization.

RESUMO

A fundamental quest of modern astronomy is to locate the earliest galaxies and study how they influenced the intergalactic medium a few hundred million years after the Big Bang1-3. The abundance of star-forming galaxies is known to decline4,5 from redshifts of about 6 to 10, but a key question is the extent of star formation at even earlier times, corresponding to the period when the first galaxies might have emerged. Here we report spectroscopic observations of MACS1149-JD1 6 , a gravitationally lensed galaxy observed when the Universe was less than four per cent of its present age. We detect an emission line of doubly ionized oxygen at a redshift of 9.1096 ± 0.0006, with an uncertainty of one standard deviation. This precisely determined redshift indicates that the red rest-frame optical colour arises from a dominant stellar component that formed about 250 million years after the Big Bang, corresponding to a redshift of about 15. Our results indicate that it may be possible to detect such early episodes of star formation in similar galaxies with future telescopes.

RESUMO

Lyman-alpha emitters are thought to be young, low-mass galaxies with ages of approximately 10(8) yr (refs 1, 2). An overdensity of them in one region of the sky (the SSA 22 field) traces out a filamentary structure in the early Universe at a redshift of z approximately 3.1 (equivalent to 15 per cent of the age of the Universe) and is believed to mark a forming protocluster. Galaxies that are bright at (sub)millimetre wavelengths are undergoing violent episodes of star formation, and there is evidence that they are preferentially associated with high-redshift radio galaxies, so the question of whether they are also associated with the most significant large-scale structure growing at high redshift (as outlined by Lyman-alpha emitters) naturally arises. Here we report an imaging survey of 1,100-microm emission in the SSA 22 region. We find an enhancement of submillimetre galaxies near the core of the protocluster, and a large-scale correlation between the submillimetre galaxies and the low-mass Lyman-alpha emitters, suggesting synchronous formation of the two very different types of star-forming galaxy within the same structure at high redshift. These results are in general agreement with our understanding of the formation of cosmic structure.

RESUMO

To investigate the effects of different fillers and their contents on the wear of composite resins, four composites (CS: non-porous spherical silica, AS: porous spherical silica, AZ: porous spherical zirconium silicate, and IS: non-porous irregular-shaped silica) were experimentally prepared using different fillers (CS, AZ, AS and IS). Simulated occlusal wear and toothbrush wear were evaluated for these composites and their worn surfaces were observed. The mechanical properties (flexural strength, elastic modulus and hardness) of these composites were determined to examine the relationships between wear and these mechanical properties. CS showed the highest occlusal wear, but the lowest toothbrush wear among four composites. AS and AZ had lower occlusal wear than CS and IS, while their toothbrush wear was higher than CS and close to that of IS. All composites showed increase in the occlusal wear as filler content increased. CS and IS showed decrease in the toothbrush wear as the filler content increased, whereas AS and AZ did not. The occlusal wear surfaces of CS and IS had concavities, while those of AZ and AS were relatively smooth with flattened filler. The toothbrush wear surfaces of CS and IS revealed the extrusion of filler from resin matrix, whereas those of AZ and AS were smooth with flattened filler. The toothbrush wear of CS and IS decreased as the mechanical properties increased, whereas those of AS and AZ did not. The occlusal wear of all composites increased as the mechanical properties increased, which would not reflect effects of these mechanical properties.

RESUMO

The behavior of a physician when confirming the death of a patient is thought to greatly affect the bereaved family. The required aspects of a physician's behavior after a patient's death are rarely included in physician education. Therefore, the few physicians who confirm the death of a patient should be conscious of the grief of the family members. A questionnaire survey was administered to nurses of a palliative care unit, and the findings showed that the behavior of an attending physician was different from that of other physicians when confirming death. We have prepared a manual that specifies the expected behavior of physicians confirming the death of patients to ensure that physicians other than the attending physician are also conscious of subsequent grief care for the bereaved family.

RESUMO

The physical properties and elemental abundances of the interstellar medium in galaxies during cosmic reionization are important for understanding the role of galaxies in this process. We report the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array detection of an oxygen emission line at a wavelength of 88 micrometers from a galaxy at an epoch about 700 million years after the Big Bang. The oxygen abundance of this galaxy is estimated at about one-tenth that of the Sun. The nondetection of far-infrared continuum emission indicates a deficiency of interstellar dust in the galaxy. A carbon emission line at a wavelength of 158 micrometers is also not detected, implying an unusually small amount of neutral gas. These properties might allow ionizing photons to escape into the intergalactic medium.

RESUMO

An 81-year-old woman consulted us with low abdominal pain. A computed tomography (CT) image showed left hydronephrosis and a mass without calcification at the lower portion of the left ureter. A retrograde urogram showed an irregular filling defect at the lower portion of the left ureter that suggested an obstruction by a malignant ureter tumor. Therefore, total nephroureterectomy was performed. The surgical specimen showed a mass with a membrane, which could be detached easily from the ureter wall. The ureter wall showed hyperkeratosis upon histological examination, and the mass was diagnosed as cholesteatoma.

RESUMO

AIM: It has been proposed that gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analog administered after testicular damage stimulates the recovery of spermatogenesis. However, GnRH analogs suppress the function of sex accessory organs. In this study, we investigated whether testosterone also stimulates the regeneration of rat spermatogenesis after exposure to busulfan. METHODS: Male Fisher rats were divided into three groups of five each and all rats were treated with busulfan, 25 mg/kg, intraperitoneally at week 0. Group A served as the control. The other two groups received testosterone enanthate, 8 mg/kg, subcutaneous injections at 3 week intervals two times before (group B) or three times after (group C) busulfan. States of spermatogenesis were evaluated by histology and by the number of spermatid nuclei per testis at week 25. RESULTS: The mean percentage of 'recovered' seminiferous tubules plus or minus standard deviation was 10.3 +/- 7.8% in group A and 2.1 +/- 1.2% in group B. In both groups, more than 80% of the tubules remained degenerated. However, testes of group C rats showed an improvement of up to 37.1 +/- 20.5% (P < 0.05). The significant recovery of spermatogenesis was also demonstrated in group C by counting the number of spermatid nuclei per testis ([78.8 +/- 57.5] x 106). However, the count was only (7.6 +/- 13.5) x 106 and (0.52 +/- 1.0) x 106 in group A and B, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Testosterone administration after severe testicular damage enhanced the regeneration of spermatogenesis in rats. We assumed that supplementary doses of testosterone would be more practical for clinical application than GnRH analogs, because exogenous testosterone maintains androgenicity.

RESUMO

Spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs), having yet to possess decisive markers, can only be detected retrospectively by transplantation assay. It was reported recently that mouse gonocytes collected from DBA/2 and ICR neonates propagated in vitro. This cultured germ cell, named the germline stem cell (GS cell), produced functional sperm to make progeny when transplanted into recipient mouse testes. Here we show that GS cell lines can be established not only from neonatal testes but also from the testis of adult mice. We also confirmed that GS cells once transplanted into a host testis can be recovered to resume in vitro expansion, indicating that they are convertible mutually with SSCs in adult testes. Confocal laser microscopic examination showed GS cells resemble undifferentiated spermatogonia in the adult testis. This unique cell line could be useful for research in germ cell biology and applicable as a new tool for the genetic engineering of animals.

RESUMO

We generated transgenic mice expressing osteopontin (OPN) under the control of the alpha(1)-antitrypsin promoter. These mice (OPN-T mice) expressed OPN mRNA in liver and kidney, and released a large amount of plasma OPN, which increased after stimulation with turpentine oil. Before sensitization, the number of CD4+ T cells in lymph nodes was significantly higher in OPN-T than nontransgenic mice, and that in spleen was slightly higher, whereas that of CD8+ T cells was no different between OPN-T and nontransgenic mice. After sensitization, the CD4+ T cell numbers in spleen increased significantly, while there were almost no changes in the CD8+ T cells in lymph nodes and spleen. The intensity of contact hypersensitivity responses to 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB) was obviously enhanced in OPN-T mice. In the delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) model elicited by DNFB, the number of CD8+ T cells among DNFB-2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS)-peritoneal exudate cells was significantly higher in OPN-T than nontransgenic mice, while there was almost no difference in that of CD4+ T cells. Adoptive transfer experiments revealed that the enhanced reactivity is carried by CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, respectively, although the ability of transferring DTH was significantly lower in CD8+ than in CD4+ T cells. The enhancement of CD8+ T cell migration was observed in OPN-T mice. These results suggest that OPN induces a proliferation of effector CD4+ and CD8+ cells in cell-mediated reactions and plays a role in the migration of CD8+ T cells.

RESUMO

Cnot7 is a co-factor of transcription regulation, expressed in a variety of tissues including the lung, liver, thyroid gland, and testis. Our previous study (Nakamura et al., 2004) showed that deletion of the Cnot7 gene in mice caused almost no abnormal phenotypes except for male infertility, due to oligo-astheno-teratozoospermia. This study also showed that Cnot7-/- mouse germ cells transplanted as donors could colonize in recipient wild mouse testes to develop normal spermatogenesis by spermatogonial transplantation assay, suggesting that the abnormal spermatogenesis observed in the Cnot7-/- testes was induced by the impaired testicular microenvironment rather than a germ cell defect. In the present study, we have carried out reciprocal germ cell transplantation in which wild type germ cells were transplanted as donors into the recipient Cnot7-/- testes to evaluate the recipient microenvironment for supporting the spermatogenesis of donor cells. We noticed that donor cell colonization was less efficient in Cnot7-/- than in Cnot7+/- testes, and that the donor derived spermatids in the recipient Cnot7-/- testes showed severe deformities. These results support our previous report that Sertoli cell defects in the Cnot7-/- testes could induce oligo-astheno-teratozoospermia.
