RESUMO

Spatial light modulators can digitally manipulate the amplitude, phase, and polarization of light. Their counterparts in the terahertz band are highly pursued to meet the requirements of numerous applications such as wireless communications and biomedical detection. Here, we propose a spatial terahertz wave modulator based on a liquid-crystal-integrated metadevice. The modulator consists of 8 × 8 pixels. The liquid crystal layer is sandwiched between an asymmetric split ring resonator array and pixelated interdigital electrodes. Fano resonance occurs for the transmitted wave, while the reflected wave is perfectly absorbed. By separately driving the liquid crystal with pixelated interdigital electrodes, both the Fano resonance and absorption peak can be continuously tuned due to the variation in the environmental refractive index. This work provides a transflective spatial terahertz wave modulator that can dynamically reconfigure a terahertz wavefront.

RESUMO

Previously, PbS/CdS core/shell quantum dots with excellent optical properties have been widely used as light-harvesting materials in solar cell and biomarkers in bio-medicine. However, the nonlinear absorption characteristics of PbS/CdS core/shell quantum dots have been rarely investigated. In this work, PbS/CdS core/shell quantum dots were successfully employed as nonlinear saturable absorber (SA) for demonstrating a mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser. Based on a film-type SA, which was prepared by incorporating the quantum dots with the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), mode-locked Er-doped operation with a pulse width of 54 ps and a maximum average output power of 2.71 mW at the repetition rate of 3.302 MHz was obtained. Our long-time stable results indicate that the CdS shell can effectively protect the PbS core from the effect of photo-oxidation and PbS/CdS core/shell quantum dots were efficient SA candidates for demonstrating pulse fiber lasers due to its tunable absorption peak and excellent saturable absorption properties.

RESUMO

Flexible polarization control of the terahertz wave in the wide bandwidth is crucial for numerous applications, such as terahertz communication, material characterization, imaging, and biosensing diagnosis. However, this promise is impeded by the operating bandwidth of circular polarization states, control modes, and the efficiency of the regulation. Here, we report a spintronic terahertz emitter integrated with phase complementary elements, consisting of a liquid crystal and metasurface, to achieve broadband polarization control with high flexibility. This strategy allows the broadband conversion between linear, elliptical, and circular polarization by changing the rotation angle to modulate the space-variant Pancharatnam-Berry phase. The device is characterized with a terahertz time-domain spectroscopy system, demonstrating that the ellipticity of the circular polarization state could keep greater than 0.9 in 0.60-0.99 THz. In the case of an external electro-magnetic field, further polarization modulation experiments are carried out to provide multiple conversion approaches for multi-azimuth. We first propose a method of full broadband polarization state control of the terahertz emitter based on Pancharatnam-Berry phase modulation and an external electro-magnetic field. We believe that such integrated devices with broadband working bandwidth and multiple control modes will make valuable contributions to the development and multi-scene applications of ultrafast terahertz technologies.
