RESUMO
Revealing the genetic basis for stress-resistant traits in extremophile plants will yield important information for crop improvement. Zygophyllum xanthoxylum, an extant species of the ancient Mediterranean, is a succulent xerophyte that can maintain a favorable water status under desert habitats; however, the genetic basis of this adaptive trait is poorly understood. Furthermore, the phylogenetic position of Zygophyllales, to which Z. xanthoxylum belongs, remains controversial. In this study, we sequenced and assembled the chromosome-level genome of Z. xanthoxylum. Phylogenetic analysis showed that Zygophyllales and Myrtales form a separated taxon as a sister to the clade comprising fabids and malvids, clarifying the phylogenetic position of Zygophyllales at whole-genome scale. Analysis of genomic and transcriptomic data revealed multiple critical mechanisms underlying the efficient osmotic adjustment using Na+ and K+ as "cheap" osmolytes that Z. xanthoxylum has evolved through the expansion and synchronized expression of genes encoding key transporters/channels and their regulators involved in Na+/K+ uptake, transport, and compartmentation. It is worth noting that ZxCNGC1;1 (cyclic nucleotide-gated channels) and ZxCNGC1;2 constituted a previously undiscovered energy-saving pathway for Na+ uptake. Meanwhile, the core genes involved in biosynthesis of cuticular wax also featured an expansion and upregulated expression, contributing to the water retention capacity of Z. xanthoxylum under desert environments. Overall, these findings boost the understanding of evolutionary relationships of eudicots, illustrate the unique water retention mechanism in the succulent xerophyte that is distinct from glycophyte, and thus provide valuable genetic resources for the improvement of stress tolerance in crops and insights into the remediation of sodic lands.

Zeolites, the most technically important crystalline microporous materials, are indispensable cornerstones of chemical engineering because of their remarkable catalytic properties and adsorption capabilities. Numerous studies have demonstrated that the hierarchical engineering of zeolites can maximize accessible active sites and improve mass transport, which significantly decreases the internal diffusion limits to achieve the desired performance. However, the construction of hierarchical zeolites with ordered alignments and size-controlled substructures in a convenient way is highly challenging. Herein, we develop a facile procedure using two common structure-directing agents, tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) and tetraethylammonium hydroxide (TEAOH), to synthesize hierarchically aligned ZSM-5 (Hie-ZSM-5) crystals with a-axis alignment substructures of controllable size. The control of the substructure size (α) in the range of 10-60 nm and the corresponding similarity (r = α/ß, where ß is the size of Hie-ZSM-5) ranging from 0.004 to 0.033 can be tuned by varying the Si/Al ratios (40-120). A systematic investigation of the overall crystallization process, using time-dependent XRD, SEM, TEM, and solid-state magic-angle spinning NMR (13C, 27Al, 29Si) methods, enable us to construct a solid mechanism for the generation of Hie-ZSM-5. Most importantly, directional transport in the unique structures of Hie-ZSM-5 efficiently enhances mass diffusion, as well as catalytic activity and stability. These findings improve our understanding of the zeolite crystallization process and inspire novel methods for the rational design of hierarchical zeolites.
RESUMO
Currently, the only thermoelectric (TE) materials commercially available at room temperature are those based on bismuth telluride. However, their widespread application is limited due to their inferior thermoelectric and mechanical properties. In this study, a strategy of growing a rigid second phase of MoSe2 is employed, in situ within the matrix phase to achieve n-type bismuth telluride-based materials with exceptional mechanical and thermoelectric properties. The in situ grown second phase contributes to both the electronic and lattice thermal conductivities. This is primarily attributed to the strong energy filtering effect, as the second phase forms a semi-common lattice interfacial structure with the matrix phase during growth. Furthermore, for composites containing 2 wt% MoSe2, a maximum zT value of 1.24 at 373 K can be achieved. On this basis, 8-pair TE module is fabricated and 1-pair TE module is optimized using a homemade p-type material. The optimized 1-pair TE module generates a maximum output power of 13.6 µW, which is twice that of the 8-pair TE module and four times more than the 8-pair TE module fabricated by commercial material. This work facilitates the development of the TE module by presenting a novel approach to obtaining bismuth telluride-based thermoelectric materials with superior thermoelectric and mechanical properties.

Gallium Nitride (GaN), as the representative of wide bandgap semiconductors, has great prospects in accomplishing rapid charge delivery under high-temperature environments thanks to excellent structural stability and electron mobility. However, there is still a gap in wafer-scale GaN single-crystal integrated electrodes applied in the energy storage field. Herein, Si-doped GaN nanochannel with gallium oxynitride (GaON) layer on a centimeter scale (denoted by GaN NC) is reported. The Si atoms modulate electronic redistribution to improve conductivity and drive nanochannel formation. Apart from that, the distinctive nanochannel configuration with a GaON layer provides adequate active sites and extraordinary structural stability. The GaN-based supercapacitors are assembled and deliver outstanding charge storage capabilities at 140 °C. Surprisingly, 90% retention is maintained after 50 000 cycles. This study opens the pathway toward wafer-scale GaN single-crystal integrated electrodes with self-powered characteristics that are compatible with various (opto)-electronic devices.
RESUMO
OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have suggested the associations between systemic inflammation and the risk of frailty, but causal relationships between them remain not well established. We conducted a bi-directional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the causal links between systemic inflammatory regulators and frailty. METHODS: Genetic variants associated with systemic inflammatory regulators were obtained from a comprehensive genetic study on 41 circulating cytokines, such as interleukin-4 (IL-4), eotaxin, and macrophage inflammatory protein-1ß (MIP1ß). We integrated summary-level data on frailty from two independent genetic studies on frailty index (FI) and Fried frailty score (FFS). The inverse-variance weighted method was used to assess the causal estimate. Sensitivity and heterogeneity analysis was performed to evaluate the stability of the estimates. The false discovery rate (FDR) method was used for P value adjustment of multiple comparisons. RESULTS: Genetically elevated levels of MIP1ß and decreased levels of eotaxin were suggestively associated with increased FI (MIP1ß: ß = 0.016, Praw = 0.006, PFDR = 0.083; eotaxin: ß = -0.030, Praw = 0.007, PFDR = 0.083) and FFS (MIP1ß: ß = 0.008, Praw = 0.027, PFDR = 0.247; eotaxin: ß = -0.015, Praw = 0.014, PFDR = 0.247). In contrast, genetically predicted FI was suggestively associated with decreased levels of IL-4 (ß = -0.395, Praw = 0.040, PFDR = 0.638) and platelet-derived growth factor BB (PDGF-BB, ß = -0.385, Praw = 0.047, PFDR = 0.638) and increased levels of stem cell factor (SCF, ß = 0.527, Praw = 0.005, PFDR = 0.204). Similar results were obtained from different sensitivity analysis. CONCLUSIONS: The present study demonstrates that increased MIP-1ß levels and decreased eotaxin levels might lead to a higher risk of frailty, whereas frailty might reduce the levels of IL-4 and PDGF-BB and increase the levels of SCF.
RESUMO
As a wide band gap semiconductor, gallium nitride (GaN) has high breakdown voltage, excellent structural stability and mechanical properties, giving it unique advantages in applications such as high frequency, high power, and high temperature. As a result, it has broad application prospects in optoelectronics and microelectronics. However, the lack of high-quality, large-size GaN crystal substrates severely limit the improvement of electronic device performance. To solve this problem, liquid phase growth of GaN has attracted much attention because it can produce higher quality GaN crystals compared to traditional vapor phase growth methods. This review introduces two main methods of liquid phase growth of GaN: the flux method and ammonothermal method, as well as their advantages and challenges. It reviews the research history and recent advances of these two methods, including the effects of different solvents and mineralizers on the growth quality and performance of GaN crystals, as well as various technical improvements. This review aims to outline the principles, characteristics, and development trends of liquid phase growth of GaN, to provide more inspiration for future research on liquid phase growth, and to achieve further breakthroughs in its development and commercial application.
RESUMO
The NO3â¢-driven nighttime aging of brown carbon (BrC) is known to greatly impact its atmospheric radiative forcing. However, the impact of oxidation by NO3⢠on the optical properties of BrC in atmospheric waters as well as the associated reaction mechanism remain unclear. In this work, we found that the optical variation of BrC proxies under environmentally relevant NO3⢠exposure depends strongly on their sources, with enhanced light absorptivity for biomass-burning BrC but bleaching for urban aerosols and humic substances. High-resolution mass spectrometry using FT-ICR MS shows that oxidation by NO3⢠leads to the formation of light-absorbing species (e.g., nitrated organics) for biomass-burning BrC while destroying electron donors (e.g., phenols) within charge transfer complexes in urban aerosols and humic substances, as evidenced by transient absorption spectroscopy and NaBH4 reduction experiments as well. Moreover, we found that the measured rate constants between NO3⢠with real BrCs (k = (1.8 ± 0.6) × 107 MC-1s-1, expressed as moles of carbon) are much higher than those of individual model organic carbon (OC), suggesting the reaction with OCs may be a previously ill-quantified important sink of NO3⢠in atmospheric waters. This work provides insights into the kinetics and molecular transformation of BrC during the oxidation by NO3â¢, facilitating further evaluation of BrC's climatic effects and atmospheric NO3⢠levels.
RESUMO
A novel colorimetric platform was designed for the determination of S. aureus by utilizing a dual-recognition strategy, where wheat germ agglutinin (WGA)-functionalized magnetic beads were served as separation elements to capture and enrich S. aureus efficiently from the matrix. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) labeled chicken anti-protein A IgY (HRP-IgY) was used to label the captured S. aureus. A chicken IgY was introduced as a signal tracer to bind with staphylococcal protein A (SPA) on the surface of S. aureus, which can circumvent the interference from protein G-producing Streptococcus. Subsequently, the colorimetric signal was achieved by an HRP-catalyzed reaction, which was amplified by HRP-IgY bound by approximately 80,000 SPA molecules on one S. aureus. The entire detection process could be accomplished within 90 min. Under optimal conditions, the linear response of different S. aureus concentrations ranged from 7.8 × 102 to 2.0 × 105 CFU/mL and the limit of detection reached down to 3.9 × 102 CFU/mL. Some common non-target bacteria yielded negative results, indicating the excellent specificity of the method. The developed strategy was successfully applied to the determination of S. aureus in various types of samples with satisfactory recoveries. Therefore, the novel dual-recognition strategy possessed the advantages of high sensitivity, specificity, and low cost and exhibited considerable potential as a promising tool to defend public health.

Fibroblast growth factor-12 (FGF12) has been reported to play important role in regulating heart diseases. We aimed to explore the role of FGF12 in doxorubicin (DOX)-induced myocardial injury. DOX-induced mice and DOX-induced HL-1 cells were used as the myocardial injury in vivo and in vitro. Then, FGF12, Anp, Bnp, and Myh7 expression was detected. The pathological injury in myocardium tissue was observed by H&E staining. The levels of markers related to myocardial damage and oxidative stress were assessed. Then, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence staining were used to detect FGF12 and 4-HNE expression. Ferroptosis were detected by Prussian blue staining and western blot. The FGFR1/AMPK/NRF2 signaling was measured by western blot. FGF12 expression was downregulated in DOX-induced mice myocardium tissues. FGF12 overexpression alleviated DOX-induced myocardial tissue pathological injury and reduced Anp, Bnp, and Myh7 expression. Additionally, the levels of CK-MB, LDH and cTnT in serum were decreased after FGF12 upregulation in DOX-induced mice. Moreover, FGF12 overexpression reduced the levels of ROS, MDA, and 4-HNE but increased SOD and GSH-Px activities. Meanwhile, FGF12 led to less deposition of iron ion, decreased ACSL4, PTGS2 and increased GPX4, FTH1 expression. Additionally, FGF12 activated the expressions of FGFR1, p-AMPK, and NRF2. Moreover, FGFR1 silencing reversed the protective effects of FGF12 overexpression on cell viability, oxidative stress, ferroptosis, and FGFR1/AMPK/NRF2 pathway. To sum up, FGF12 inhibited mitochondria-dependent ferroptosis in cardiomyocytes induced by DOX through activation of FGFR1/AMPK/NRF2 signaling. These findings clarify a new mechanism of DOX-induced cardiac injury and provide a promising target to limit the disease development.

Efficient and stable electrocatalysts are critically needed for the development of practical overall seawater splitting. The nanocomposite of RuCoBO has been rationally engineered to be an electrocatalyst that fits these criteria. The study has shown that a calcinated RuCoBO-based nanocomposite (Ru2Co1BO-350) exhibits an extremely high catalytic activity for H2 and O2 production in alkaline seawater (overpotentials of 14 mV for H2 evolution and 219 mV for O2 evolution) as well as a record low cell voltage (1.466 V@10 mA cm-2) and long-term stability (230 h @50 mA cm-2 and @100 mA cm-2) for seawater splitting. The results show that surface reconstruction of Ru2Co1BO-350 occurs during hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction, which leads to the high activity and stability of the catalyst. The reconstructed surface is highly resistant to Cl- corrosion. The investigation suggests that a new strategy exists for the design of high-performance Ru-based electrocatalysts that resist anodic corrosion during seawater splitting.
RESUMO
Hierarchical assembly of arc-like fractal nanostructures not only has its unique self-similarity feature for stability enhancement but also possesses the structural advantages of highly exposed surface-active sites for activity enhancement, remaining a great challenge for high-performance metallic nanocatalyst design. Herein, we report a facile strategy to synthesize a novel arc-like hierarchical fractal structure of PtPd bimetallic nanoparticles (h-PtPd) by using pyridinium-type ionic liquids as the structure-directing agent. Growth mechanisms of the arc-like nanostructured PtPd nanoparticles have been fully studied, and precise control of the particle sizes and pore sizes has been achieved. Due to the structural features, such as size control by self-similarity growth of subunits, structural stability by nanofusion of subunits, and increased numbers of exposed active atoms by the curved homoepitaxial growth, h-PtPd displays outstanding electrocatalytic activity toward oxygen reduction reaction and excellent stability during hydrothermal treatment and catalytic process.
RESUMO
Photocatalysts for seawater splitting are severely restricted because of the presence of multiple types of ions in seawater that cause corrosion and deactivation. As a result, new materials that promote adsorption of H+ and hinder competing adsorption of metal cations should enhance utilization of photogenerated electrons on the catalyst surface for efficient H2 production. One strategy to design advanced photocatalysts involves introduction of hierarchical porous structures that enable fast mass transfer and creation of defect sites that promote selective hydrogen ion adsorption. Herein, we used a facile calcination method to fabricate the macro-mesoporous C3N4 derivative, VN-HCN, that contains multiple nitrogen vacancies. We demonstrated that VN-HCN has enhanced corrosion resistance and elevated photocatalytic H2 production performance in seawater. Experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that enhanced mass and carrier transfer and selective adsorption of hydrogen ions are key features of VN-HCN that lead to its high seawater splitting activity.
RESUMO
Direct electrochemical seawater splitting is a renewable, scalable, and potentially economic approach for green hydrogen production in environments where ultra-pure water is not readily available. However, issues related to low durability caused by complex ions in seawater pose great challenges for its industrialization. In this review, a mechanistic analysis of durability issues of electrolytic seawater splitting is discussed. We critically analyze the development of seawater electrolysis and identify the durability challenges at both the anode and cathode. Particular emphasis is given to elucidating rational strategies for designing electrocatalysts/electrodes/interfaces with long lifetimes in realistic seawater including inducing passivating anion layers, preferential OH-adsorption, employing anti-corrosion materials, fabricating protective layers, immobilizing Cl- on the surface of electrocatalysts, tailoring Cl- adsorption sites, inhibition of OH- binding to Mg2+ and Ca2+, inhibition of Mg and Ca hydroxide precipitation adherence, and co-electrosynthesis of nano-sized Mg hydroxides. Synthesis methods of electrocatalysts/electrodes and innovations in electrolyzer are also discussed. Furthermore, the prospects for developing seawater splitting technologies for clean hydrogen generation are summarized. We found that researchers have rethought the role of Cl- ions, as well as more attention to cathodic reaction and electrolyzers, which is conducive to accelerate the commercialization of seawater electrolysis.
RESUMO
A solvothermal method to prepare PtNi alloys that have differing morphologies is described. By adjusting the feed ratio of Pt and Ni precursors in this process, PtNi alloys with different compositions (Pt : Ni atomic ratio from 1 : 3 to 3 : 1) and morphologies (evolution from nanobranches to nanoparticles) are generated. The prepared Pt48 Ni52 alloy, which has a composite morphology comprised of nanobranches and nanoparticles, exhibits superior activity and durability towards the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in seawater compared to those of commercial Pt/C catalyst and other PtNi alloys that have different compositions and morphologies. The excellent seawater HER performance of Pt48 Ni52 is ascribed to its nanobranch/nanoparticle morphology that optimally facilitates electron accumulation on Pt, which enhances resistance to chloride corrosion in seawater.

Hybridization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and homogeneous ionic liquids (ILs) endows the heterogeneous composite with high porosity and accessible multiple active sites (e.g., acidic or basic sites), which exhibits great potential in CO2 capture and conversion. Nevertheless, the majority of MOF composites are synthesized as powders, significantly restricting their practical applications due to inherent problems such as poor handling properties, high pressure drops, and mechanical instability. Thus, it is crucial to shape MOF composites into various monoliths that allow efficient processing, especially for industrial purposes. In this work, a hierarchical ILs@nanoMOF composite gel (H-IL@UiO-66-gel) featuring both intraparticle micropores and interparticle mesopores and multiple active sites was successfully fabricated by a two-step approach. Benefiting from the integrated advantages of the hierarchically porous MOF for enhanced mass transfer and affinity of ILs for activating CO2 molecules, the resultant H-IL@UiO-66-gel exhibits excellent uptake of macromolecules and catalytic activity toward CO2 cycloaddition with epoxides under moderate conditions, far beyond the traditional microporous IL@UiO-66-gel and unfunctionalized H-UiO-66-gel. Furthermore, the H-IL@UiO-66 composite monolith can be effortlessly separated and reused at least three times without depletion of catalytic activity. It is believed that this fabrication method for the shaping of MOF composites is highly versatile and can be extended to other types of MOFs for various application fields.

PURPOSE: Fruit intake is beneficial to several chronic diseases, but controversial in diabetes. We aimed to investigate prospectively the associations of whole fresh fruit intake with risk of incident type 2 diabetes (T2D) in subjects with different glucose regulation capacities. METHODS: The present study included 79,922 non-diabetic participants aged ≥ 40 years from an ongoing nationwide prospective cohort in China. Baseline fruit intake information was collected by a validated food frequency questionnaire. Plasma HbA1c, fasting and 2 h post-loading glucose levels were measured at both baseline and follow-up examinations. Cox proportional hazards models were used to calculate hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for incident diabetes among participants with normal glucose tolerance (NGT) and prediabetes, after adjusted for multiple confounders. Restricted cubic spline analysis was applied for dose-response relation. RESULTS: During a median 3.8-year follow-up, 5886 (7.36%) participants developed diabetes. Overall, we identified a linear and dose-dependent inverse association between dietary whole fresh fruit intake and risk of incident T2D. Each 100 g/d higher fruit intake was associated with 2.8% lower risk of diabetes (HR 0.972, 95%CI [0.949-0.996], P = 0.0217), majorly benefiting NGT subjects with 15.2% lower risk (HR 0.848, 95%CI [0.766-0.940], P = 0.0017), while not significant in prediabetes (HR 0.981, 95%CI 0.957-4.005, P = 0.1268). Similarly, the inverse association was present in normoglycemia individuals with a 48.6% lower risk of diabetes when consuming fruits > 7 times/week comparing to those < 1 time/week (HR 0.514, 95% CI [0.368-0.948]), but not in prediabetes (HR 0.883, 95% CI [0.762-1.023]). CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that higher frequency and amount of fresh fruit intake may protect against incident T2D, especially in NGT, but not in prediabetes, highlighting the dietary recommendation of higher fresh fruit consumption to prevent T2D in normoglycemia population.

Epidemiological evidence has linked air pollution with adverse respiratory outcomes, but the mechanisms underlying susceptibility to air pollution remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the role of glutathione S-transferase (GST) polymorphism in the association between air pollution and lung function levels. A total of 75 healthy young volunteers aged 18-20 years old were recruited for six follow-up visits and examinations. Spirometry was conducted to obtain lung function parameters such as forced vital capacity (FVC), and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1). Nasal fluid concentrations of interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-8 (IL-8), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and 8-epi-prostaglandin F2α (8-epi-PGF2a) were measured using ELISA kits. Linear mixed-effect models were used to evaluate the association of air pollutants with respiratory outcomes. Additionally, polymorphisms of glutathione S-transferase mu 1 (GSTM1) and glutathione S-transferase theta 1 (GSTT1) were estimated to explore its role in the association between air pollutants and lung function. We found that short-term exposure to atmospheric particulates such as PM2.5 and PM10 can cause an increase in nasal biomarkers of inflammation, oxidative stress, and lung function, while air gaseous pollutant exposure is linked with decreased lung function, except for CO. Stratification analyses showed that an increase in nasal inflammatory cytokines caused by exposure to atmospheric particulates is more obvious in subjects with GSTM1-sufficient (GSTM1+) than GSTM1-null (GSTM1-), while elevated lung function levels due to air particles are more significant in subjects with the genotype of GSTM1- when compared to GSTM1+. As for air gaseous pollutants, decreased lung function levels caused by O3, SO2, and NO2 exposure is more manifest in subjects with the genotype of GSTM1- compared to GSTM1+. Taken together, short-term exposure to air pollutants is associated with alterations in nasal biomarkers and lung function levels in young healthy adults, and susceptible genotypes play an important mediation role in the association between exposure to air pollutants and inflammation, oxidative stress, and lung function levels.

BACKGROUND: Compared with methicillin sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA), the prognosis of patients with methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bloodstream infection is poor. Therefore, the construction of MRSA and MSSA identification model has certain value for the selection of antibiotics and treatment outcome control. This study aimed to derive and validate a simple risk prediction model for MRSA bloodstream infection in Chinese patients. METHODS: Three hundred and thirty-five patients with Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bloodstream infection were retrospectively analyzed and divided into three groups. The first group was used for the risk score derivation (n = 163), the second group was used for internal validation (n = 80), and the third group was used for external validation (n = 92). According to the odds ratio (OR) obtained from multivariate logistic regression, the risk prediction model for MRSA bloodstream infection was established, and the prediction efficiency of the model in three cohorts were evaluated. RESULTS: Hospital stay before BSI ≥ 7 days, hospital acquired BSI, infection source ≥ 2 sites, indwelling gastric tube before BSI and carbapenems used before BSI and after admission were independent influencing factors of MRSA in the derivation group, the above influencing factors were scored 3, 5, 4, 3, and 3, respectively. The derivation, internal and external validation groups showed adequate discrimination (the AUCs were 0.788, 0.780, and 0.742, respectively) and good calibration (H-L tests were χ2 = 3.896, p = 0.306; χ2 = 4.221, p = 0.298; and χ2 = 3.974, p = 0.352, respectively). The risk scores were further divided into very low-risk (score 0 - 3), low-risk (score 4 - 7), high-risk (score 8 - 12), and very high-risk (score ≥ 13) layers. CONCLUSIONS: The simple risk score model for predicting MRSA bloodstream infection has good predictive effect, high predictive accuracy, and good clinical applicability, which can help clinicians choose sensitive antibiotics and reduce the adverse prognosis of patients.
