RESUMO

Unlike proteins, which have a wealth of validated structural data, experimentally or computationally validated DNA origami datasets are limited. Here we present a graph neural network that can predict the three-dimensional conformation of DNA origami assemblies both rapidly and accurately. We develop a hybrid data-driven and physics-informed approach for model training, designed to minimize not only the data-driven loss but also the physics-informed loss. By employing an ensemble strategy, the model can successfully infer the shape of monomeric DNA origami structures almost in real time. Further refinement of the model in an unsupervised manner enables the analysis of supramolecular assemblies consisting of tens to hundreds of DNA blocks. The proposed model enables an automated inverse design of DNA origami structures for given target shapes. Our approach facilitates the real-time virtual prototyping of DNA origami, broadening its design space.

RESUMO

The current study aimed to assess the effectiveness of biochar formed from algae in the removal of Cr(VI) through the process of impregnating brown algae Sargassum hemiphyllum with KHCO3. The synthesis of KHCO3-activated biochar (KBAB-3), demonstrating remarkable adsorption capabilities for Cr(VI), was accomplished utilizing a mixture of brown algae and KHCO3 in a mass ratio of 1:3, followed by calcination at a temperature of 700 °C. Based on the empirical evidence, it can be observed that KBAB-3 shown a significant ability to adsorb Cr(VI) within a range of 60-160 mg g-1 across different environmental conditions. In addition, the KBAB-3 material demonstrated the advantageous characteristic of easy separation, allowing for the continued maintenance of a high efficiency in removing Cr(VI) even after undergoing numerous cycles of reuse. In conclusion, the application of KBAB-3, a novel adsorbent, exhibits considerable prospects for effective removal of Cr(VI) from diverse water sources in the near future.

RESUMO

The COVID-19 pandemic was caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, marking one of the most catastrophic global health crises of the 21st century. Throughout this period, widespread use and improper disposal of personal protective equipment (PPE) emerged as a pressing environmental issue, significantly impacting various life forms. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a high rate of PEP disposal. An alarming 1.6 × 106 tons of plastic waste each day has been generated since the onset of the outbreak, predominantly from the inadequate disposal of PPE. The mismanagement and subsequent degradation of discarded PPE significantly contribute to increased non-biodegradable micro(nano)plastic (MNP) waste. This pollution has had profound adverse effects on terrestrial, marine, and aquatic ecosystems, which have been extensively of concern recently. Accumulated MNPs within aquatic organisms could serve as a potential route for human exposure when consuming seafood. This review presents a novel aspect concerning the pollution caused by MNPs, particularly remarking on their role during the pandemic and their detrimental effects on human health. These microplastic particles, through the process of fragmentation, transform into nanoparticles, persisting in the environment and posing potential hazards. The prevalence of MNP from PPE, notably masks, raises concerns about their plausible health risks, warranting global attention and comprehensive exploration. Conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the long-term effects of these processes and implementing effective management strategies is essential.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) is the most widely used standardised screener for impairments across a range of cognitive domains. However, the degree to which its domains (orientation, registration, attention, recall, language, and visuospatial) capture cognitive functioning measured using standardised neuropsychological tests is unclear. METHOD: A longitudinal research design with four biannual assessments over a 6-year period was used with an initial sample of 1037 older adults (aged above 70 years). Participants completed MMSE and neuropsychological tests at each assessment. Network analysis was utilised to investigate unique associations among the MMSE and its domains and neuropsychological test performance at each time point. RESULTS: The total MMSE and two of its domains, language and recall, were associated with neuropsychological memory performance. The MMSE orientation, registration and visuospatial domains did not have any unique associations with neuropsychological performance. No stable internal interconnections between MMSE domains were found over time. The association of total MMSE as well as its recall domain with neuropsychological memory performance remained very similar over the 6-year period. CONCLUSIONS: The present study adds evidence to the validity of the MMSE and supports the clinical usage of the MMSE, whereby the total score is used for screening patients with or without cognitive impairments, with repeated administration to monitor cognitive changes over time, to inform intervention. However, the tool is not able to diagnose the cases for changes in specific cognitive domains and as such, should not replace a complete neuropsychological assessment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The modified Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status (TICS-M) is a widely used tool for assessing global cognitive functions and screening for cognitive impairments. The tool was conceptualised to capture various cognitive domains, but the validity of such domains has not been investigated against comprehensive neuropsychological assessments tools. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the associations between the TICS-M domains and neuropsychological domains to evaluate the validity of the TICS-M domains using network analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A longitudinal research design was used with a large sample of older adults (aged above 70 years; n = 1037 at the baseline assessment) who completed the TICS-M and comprehensive neuropsychological assessments biennially. We applied network analysis to identify unique links between the TICS-M domains and neuropsychological test scores. RESULTS: At baseline, there were weak internal links between the TICS-M domains. The TICS-M memory and language domains were significantly related to their corresponding neuropsychological domains. The TICS-M attention domain had significant associations with executive function and visuospatial abilities. The TICS-M orientation domain was not significantly associated with any of the five neuropsychological domains. Despite an attrition of almost 50% at wave four, weak internal links between the TICS-M domains and most associations between TICS-M and neuropsychological domains that were found initially, remained stable at least over two waves within the 6-year period. CONCLUSIONS: This study supports the overall structural validity of the TICS-M screener in assessing enduring global cognitive function. However, separate TICS-M cognitive domains should not be considered equivalent to the analogous neuropsychological domains.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The 16-item Informant Questionnaire on Cognitive Decline in the Elderly (IQCODE-16) is a well-validated and widely-used measure of cognitive changes (CCs) among older adults. This study aimed to use Rasch methodology to establish psychometric properties of the IQCODE-16 and validate the existing ordinal-to-interval transformation algorithms across multiple large samples. METHODS: A Partial Credit Rasch model was employed to examine psychometric properties of the IQCODE-16 using data (n = 918) from two longitudinal studies of participants aged 57-99 years: the Older Australian Twins Study (n = 450) and the Canberra Longitudinal Study (n = 468), and reusing the Sydney Memory and Ageing Study (MAS) sample (n = 400). RESULTS: Initial analyses indicated good reliability for the IQCODE-16 (Person Separation Index range: 0.82-0.90). However, local dependency was identified between items, with several items showing misfit to the model. Replicating the existing Rasch solution could not reproduce the best Rasch model fit for all samples. Combining locally dependent items into three testlets resolved all misfit and local dependency issues and resulted in the best Rasch model fit for all samples with evidence of unidimensionality, strong reliability, and invariance across person factors. Accordingly, new ordinal-to-interval transformation algorithms were produced to convert the IQCODE-16 ordinal scores into interval data to improve the accuracy of its scores. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study support the reliability and validity of the IQCODE-16 in measuring CCs among older adults. New ordinal-to-interval conversion tables generated using samples from multiple independent datasets are more generalizable and can be used to enhance the precision of the IQCODE-16 without changing its original format. An easy-to-use converter has been made available for clinical and research use.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Liquid biopsy testing offers a significant potential in selecting signal-matched therapies for advanced solid malignancies. The feasibility of liquid biopsy testing in a community-based oncology practice, and its actual impact on selecting signal-matched therapies, and subsequent survival effects have not previously been reported. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted on adult patients with advanced solid cancer tested with a liquid-biopsy assay between December 2018 and 2019, in a community oncology practice. The impact of testing on treatment assignment and survival was assessed at 1-year follow-up. RESULTS: A total of 178 patients underwent testing. A positive test was reported in 140/178 patients (78.7%), of whom 75% had an actionable mutation. The actual overall signal-based matching rate was 17.8%. While 85.7% of patients with no actionable mutation had a signal-based clinical trial opportunity, only 10% were referred to a trial. Survival analysis of lung, breast, and colorectal cancer patients with actionable mutations who received any therapy (n = 66) revealed a survival advantage for target-matched (n = 22) compared to unmatched therapy (n = 44): patients who received matched therapy had significantly longer progression-free survival (PFS) (mPFS: 12 months; 95%CI, 10.6-13.4 vs. 5.0 months; 95%CI, 3.4-6.6; P = .029), with a tendency towards longer overall survival (OS) (mOS: 15 months; 95%CI, 13.5-16.5 vs. 13 months; 95%CI: 11.3-14.7; P = .087). CONCLUSIONS: Implementation of liquid biopsy testing is feasible in a US community practice and impacts therapeutic choices in patients with advanced malignancies. Receipt of liquid biopsy-generated signal-matched therapies conferred added survival benefits.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: A major issue in evaluating the cognitive status of ageing populations is a clear distinction between enduring and dynamic aspects of global cognition necessary for evaluating risks of dementia and effectiveness of preventive interventions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Generalizability Theory was applied to investigate dynamic and enduring aspects of global cognition using longitudinal data over 10 years of follow-up. Measures included the Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE) and the Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status-modified (TICS-M). The sample (N = 238) included 154 females, mean age = 76.54 years, SD = 3.94 from the Sydney Memory and Ageing Study. RESULTS: The MMSE measured dynamic and enduring aspects of cognition to a comparable degree with 56% of variance explained by enduring aspects and 44% by dynamic aspects and showed low sensitivity/high specificity in detecting dementia. A shortened version of the MMSE (MMSE-D8) better captured dynamic aspects of cognition after removing three items less sensitive to change. The TICS-M predominantly measured enduring aspects of cognition (72%) with the remaining 28% due to dynamic aspects and displayed high sensitivity/high specificity for dementia screening. CONCLUSIONS: The MMSE measures both dynamic and enduring cognitive aspects and is suitable for general clinical assessments, while the MMSE-D8 can be used to monitor transitory changes of global cognition over time. The TICS-M is more useful for measuring enduring features of cognition and screening for dementia. Our findings highlight the value of generalizability theory to distinguish dynamic and enduring features of cognition, which may contribute to preventive interventions and monitoring cognitive ability over time.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate psychometric properties and enhance precision of the 16-item Informant Questionnaire on Cognitive Decline in the Elderly (IQCODE-16) up to interval-level scale using Rasch methodology. DESIGN: Partial Credit Rasch model was applied to the IQCODE-16 scores using longitudinal data spanning 10 years of biennial follow-up. SETTING: Community-dwelling older adults aged 70-90 years and their informants, living in Sydney, Australia, participated in the longitudinal Sydney Memory and Ageing Study (MAS). PARTICIPANTS: The sample included 400 participants of the MAS aged 70 years and older, 109 out of those were diagnosed with dementia 10 years after the baseline assessment. MEASUREMENTS: The IQCODE-16. RESULTS: Initial analysis indicated excellent reliability of the IQCODE-16, Person Separation Index (PSI) = 0.92, but there were four misfitting items and local dependency issues. Combining locally dependent items into four super-items resulted in the best Rasch model fit with no misfitting or locally dependent items, strict unidimensionality, strong reliability, and invariance across person factors such as participants' diagnosis and relationship to their informants, as well as informants' age and sex. This permitted the generation of conversion algorithms to transform ordinal scores into interval data to enhance precision of measurement. CONCLUSIONS: The IQCODE-16 demonstrated strong reliability and satisfied expectations of the unidimensional Rasch model after minor modifications. Ordinal-to-interval transformation tables published here can be used to increase accuracy of the IQCODE-16 without altering its current format. These findings could contribute to enhancement of precision in assessing clinical conditions such as cognitive decline in older people.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Asthma is a disease that causes significant health and economic burdens worldwide. The prevalence and incidence of asthma have been rising around the world over recent decades. The current study is to capture the direct medical costs of inpatient and outpatient asthma treatment for the period from 2013 to 2017. METHODS: This study was conducted at Military Hospital 175 in Vietnam. The study was performed from the patient and social insurance perspective, which means all types of costs were identified and measured based on patients' healthcare insurance. Cost analysis was measured using the medical records for estimating the economic burden of asthma. The study adopted descriptive statistics and bootstrap techniques to calculate asthma-related costs as well as analyze the background characteristics of asthma patients. RESULTS: The average outpatient and inpatient costs were US$64.90 and US$141.20, respectively, over the period from 2013 to 2017, for which out-of-pocket payments accounted for 10-12%. Medications, specifically asthma controller drugs, were the key driver leading to the substantial burden of direct medical costs for treating asthma. The cost burden was also significantly higher for adult patients compared to children. CONCLUSIONS: Asthma continues to be a concerning problem in Vietnam. The economic impact of either preventive or promotive health interventions that can reduce the prevalence of asthma can be predicted from the statistics found in this research. Moreover, this data will help policymakers plan and allocate national expenditures for asthma treatment in a more rational way.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the economic burden of asthma treatment by quantifying direct medical expenditures at one of Southern Vietnam's public hospitals base on the hospital perspective. METHODS: A retrospective, prevalence-based, cost-of-illness analysis was developed using the hospital's electronic medical record data to calculate the economic burden of asthma (ICD-10 code J45, J46) through direct medical costs from January 2014 to December 2017. All costs were converted to US dollars and to the year 2018. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The potential correlations between variables were evaluated using the chisquare test and bootstrap difference. RESULTS: The average direct medical cost of asthma was estimated to range from $34.7 to $55.3 per - outpatient and $45.1 to $107.2 per - inpatient annually. The total economic burdens for 4 years from 2014 to 2017 were $110,387.4 from outpatients and $13,413.8 from inpatients. The most influential component was medication cost. CONCLUSIONS: Asthma places a high economic burden on individuals and the healthcare system in Vietnam. The findings of this study provide health administrators with important evidence to enhance surveillance of the disease and to allow suitable drafting of national health policy.

RESUMO

We justify and discuss the physical origins for the assumption of temperature continuity at crystal/melt interfaces by performing atomistic simulations. We additionally answer why the crystal/melt interfaces differ from the typical solid/liquid interfaces, which usually exhibit dissimilarities and a resulting temperature drop. We present results for pure silver modeled using the embedded-atom method and Lennard-Jones potential function and contrast the results with each other. We find that the temperature continuity at an interface between a crystal and its melt originates from the perfect vibrational coupling, which is caused by the interfacial structural diffusivity. This study provides fundamental insights into the heat transfer for cases of extremely large heat flux and thermal gradients occurring during rapid melting and solidification. The findings additionally determine the role of rough surfaces in manipulating the thermal conductance in nanodevices.

RESUMO

Synbiotics, a conjunction between prebiotics and probiotics, have been used in aquaculture for over 10 years. However, the mechanisms of how synbiotics work as growth and immunity promoters are far from being unraveled. Here, we show that a prebiotic as part of a synbiotic is hydrolyzed to mono- or disaccharides as the sole carbon source with diverse mechanisms, thereby increasing biomass and colonization that is established by specific crosstalk between probiotic bacteria and the surface of intestinal epithelial cells of the host. Synbiotics may indirectly and directly promote the growth of aquatic animals through releasing extracellular bacterial enzymes and bioactive products from synbiotic metabolic processes. These compounds may activate precursors of digestive enzymes of the host and augment the nutritional absorptive ability that contributes to the efficacy of food utilization. In fish immune systems, synbiotics cause intestinal epithelial cells to secrete cytokines which modulate immune functional cells as of dendritic cells, T cells, and B cells, and induce the ability of lipopolysaccharides to trigger tumor necrosis factor-α and Toll-like receptor 2 gene transcription leading to increased respiratory burst activity, phagocytosis, and nitric oxide production. In shellfish, synbiotics stimulate the proliferation and degranulation of hemocytes of shrimp due to the presence of bacterial cell walls. Pathogen-associated molecular patterns are subsequently recognized and bound by specific pattern-recognition proteins, triggering melanization and phagocytosis processes.

RESUMO

This study focuses on the proper characterization of temperature profiles across grain boundaries (GBs) in order to calculate the correct interfacial thermal resistance (ITR) and reveal the influence of GB geometries onto thermal transport. The solid-solid interfaces resulting from the orientation difference between the (001), (011), and (111) copper surfaces were investigated. Temperature discontinuities were observed at the boundary of grains due to the phonon mismatch, phonon backscattering, and atomic forces between dissimilar structures at the GBs. We observed that the temperature decreases gradually in the GB area rather than a sharp drop at the interface. As a result, three distinct temperature gradients developed at the GB which were different than the one observed in the bulk solid. This behavior extends a couple molecular diameters into both sides of the interface where we defined a thickness at GB based on the measured temperature profiles for characterization. Results showed dependence on the selection of the bin size used to average the temperature data from the molecular dynamics system. The bin size on the order of the crystal layer spacing was found to present an accurate temperature profile through the GB. We further calculated the GB thickness of various cases by using potential energy (PE) distributions which showed agreement with direct measurements from the temperature profile and validated the proper binning. The variation of grain crystal orientation developed different molecular densities which were characterized by the average atomic surface density (ASD) definition. Our results revealed that the ASD is the primary factor affecting the structural disorders and heat transfer at the solid-solid interfaces. Using a system in which the planes are highly close-packed can enhance the probability of interactions and the degree of overlap between vibrational density of states (VDOS) of atoms forming at interfaces, leading to a reduced ITR. Thus, an accurate understanding of thermal characteristics at the GB can be formulated by selecting a proper bin size.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AIMS: The transplantation of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) to damaged tissue has attracted attention in scientific and medical fields as an effective regenerative therapy. Nevertheless, additional studies are required to develop an MSC transplant method for bone regeneration because the use of an artificial scaffold restricts the number of transplanted cells and their function. Furthermore, regulating the degree of cell differentiation in vitro is desirable for a more effective regenerative therapy. To address these unresolved issues, with the use of a self-produced extracellular matrix (ECM), we developed clumps of an MSC/ECM complex (C-MSCs). METHODS: MSCs isolated from rat femur were cultured in growth medium supplemented with 50 µg/mL of ascorbic acid for 7 days. To obtain C-MSCs, confluent cells were scratched with the use of a micropipette tip to roll up the cellular sheet, which consisted of ECM produced by the MSCs. The biological properties of C-MSCs were assessed in vitro and their bone regenerative activity was tested by use of a rat calvarial defect model. RESULTS: Immunofluorescent confocal microscopic analysis revealed that type I collagen formed C-MSCs. Osteopontin messenger RNA expression and amount of calcium content were higher in C-MSCs cultured in osteo-inductive medium than those of untreated C-MSCs. The transplantation of osteogenic-differentiated C-MSCs led to rapid bone regeneration in the rat calvarial defect model. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that the use of C-MSCs refined by self-produced ECM, which contain no artificial scaffold and can be processed in vitro, may represent a novel tissue engineering therapy.

RESUMO

Commercially available woven fabrics (e.g., nylon- or PET-based fabrics) possess inherently re-entrant textures in the form of cylindrical yarns and fibers. We analyze the liquid repellency of woven and nanotextured oleophobic fabrics using a nested model with n levels of hierarchy that is constructed from modular units of cylindrical and spherical building blocks. At each level of hierarchy, the density of the topographical features is captured using a dimensionless textural parameter D(n)*. For a plain-woven mesh comprised of chemically treated fiber bundles (n = 2), the tight packing of individual fibers in each bundle (D2* ≈ 1) imposes a geometric constraint on the maximum oleophobicity that can be achieved solely by modifying the surface energy of the coating. For liquid droplets contacting such tightly bundled fabrics with modified surface energies, we show that this model predicts a lower bound on the equilibrium contact angle of θ(E) ≈ 57° below which the CassieBaxter to Wenzel wetting transition occurs spontaneously, and this is validated experimentally. We demonstrate how the introduction of an additional higher order micro-/nanotexture onto the fibers (n = 3) is necessary to overcome this limit and create more robustly nonwetting fabrics. Finally, we show a simple experimental realization of the enhanced oleophobicity of fabrics by depositing spherical microbeads of poly(methyl methacrylate)/fluorodecyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (fluorodecyl POSS) onto the fibers of a commercial woven nylon fabric.

RESUMO

Reports in recent years indicate that the increasing emergence of resistance to drugs be using to TB treatment. The resistance to them severely affects to options for effective treatment. The emergence of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis has increased interest in understanding the mechanism of drug resistance in M. tuberculosis and the development of new therapeutics, diagnostics and vaccines. In this study, a label-free quantitative proteomics approach has been used to analyze proteome of multidrug-resistant and susceptible clinical isolates of M. tuberculosis and identify differences in protein abundance between the two groups. With this approach, we were able to identify a total of 1,583 proteins. The majority of identified proteins have predicted roles in lipid metabolism, intermediary metabolism, cell wall and cell processes. Comparative analysis revealed that 68 proteins identified by at least two peptides showed significant differences of at least twofolds in relative abundance between two groups. In all protein differences, the increase of some considering proteins such as NADH dehydrogenase, probable aldehyde dehydrogenase, cyclopropane mycolic acid synthase 3, probable arabinosyltransferase A, putative lipoprotein, uncharacterized oxidoreductase and six membrane proteins in resistant isolates might be involved in the drug resistance and to be potential diagnostic protein targets. The decrease in abundance of proteins related to secretion system and immunogenicity (ESAT-6-like proteins, ESX-1 secretion system associated proteins, O-antigen export system and MPT63) in the multidrug-resistant strains can be a defensive mechanism undertaken by the resistant cell.

RESUMO

Thirty-day readmission (30-DR) has become an important quality-of-care measure. Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) presents a medical setting with higher readmission rates. We analyzed factors affecting 30-DR and its impact on patient outcomes and on health care costs in 91 patients who underwent reduced-toxicity conditioning (RTC) allo-HCT with fludarabine and busulfan. The patient cohort was divided into 2: the readmission group (R-gp) or the no-readmission group (NR-gp). Overall, 38% (n = 35) required readmission with a median time to readmission of 14 days. In multivariate analysis, only documented infection during the index admission predicted 30-DR, P = .01. With a median follow-up of 18 months (range, 1 to 69) for surviving patients, the 2-year overall survival was 49% and 58% in the R-gp and NR-gp respectively, P = .48. The 1-year nonrelapse mortality in R-gp and NR-gp was 18% and 13% respectively, P = .43. The median post-transplantation hospital charges in the R-gp and NR-gp were $85,115 (range, $32,015 to $242,519) and $45,083 (range, $10,715 to $485,456), P = .0002. In conclusion, only documented infections during the index hospitalization influenced 30-DR after RTC allo-HCT. Although 30-DR did not adversely affect mortality or survival, it was associated with significantly increased 100-day post-transplantation hospital charges, thus supporting its role as a quality-of-care measure in allo-HCT patients.

RESUMO

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) reactivation is a relatively common cause of morbidity following autologous hematopoietic cell transplant (auto-HCT). The Centers for Disease Control in 2009 recommended extending VZV prophylaxis for 1 year post-transplantation. We retrospectively analyzed rates of VZV reactivation following auto-HCT at our transplant center prior to and after the implementation of extended antiviral prophylaxis in June 2008. The study population was divided into three different cohorts according to the length of VZV prophylaxis as following: (1) prophylaxis until neutrophil recovery to ≥500/µL (n = 77), (2) prophylaxis for 6 months (n = 12), or (3) 12 months (n = 40) post-auto-HCT. All patients received acyclovir 400 mg oral or intravenously twice daily or valacyclovir 500 mg oral daily. For patients in whom VZV reactivation occurred, data was collected on severity of infection, time of onset, treatment, and any associated complications. One hundred twenty-nine patients undergoing auto-HCT between January 1, 2004 and January 31, 2010 were included in the study. There was a significant difference in the rates of VZV reactivation between the neutrophil recovery and 12 months prophylaxis cohorts at 14 % (n = 11) and 2 % (n = 1) (P = 0.04), respectively. VZV reactivation rate in the 6-month prophylaxis group was 17 % (n = 2), but did not reach statistical significance due to small numbers. In the subset of auto-HCT patients treated with bortezomib, 13 % (n = 2) developed VZV reactivation in the neutrophil recovery group, while no events occurred in the other two cohorts. Complications of VZV reactivation include post-herpetic neuralgia (n = 5), severe pain (n = 3), scarring (n = 1), and motor weakness (n = 1); two patients required hospitalization and three patients developed disseminated zoster. Our limited retrospective analysis suggests a significant reduction in rates of post-auto-HCT rates of VZV reactivation with extended 12 months antiviral prophylaxis. VZV reactivation is a significant complication post-auto-HCT, and extended prophylaxis appears to be safe and effective in this setting.

RESUMO

The beneficial effects of poly-ß-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) for aquaculture animals have been shown in several studies. The strategy of applying PHB contained in a bacterial carrier has, however, hardly been considered. The effect of administering PHB-accumulated Alcaligenes eutrophus H16 containing 10 or 80 % PHB on dry weight, named A10 and A80, respectively, through the live feed Artemia was investigated on the culture performance of larvae of the giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii). Feeding larvae with Artemia nauplii enriched in a medium containing 100 and 1,000 mg L(-1) A80 significantly increased the survival with about 15 % and the development of the larvae with a larval stage index of about 1 as compared to feeding non-enriched Artemia. The survival of the larvae also significantly increased with about 35 % in case of a challenge with Vibrio harveyi. The efficiency of these treatments was equal to a control treatment of Artemia enriched in an 800 mg L(-1) PHB powder suspension, while Artemia enriched in 10 mg L(-1) A80, 100 mg L(-1) A10, and 1,000 mg L(-1) A10 did not bring similar effects. From our results, it can be concluded that PHB supplemented in a bacterial carrier (i.e., amorphous PHB) can increase the larviculture efficiency of giant freshwater prawn similar to supplementation of PHB in powdered form (i.e., crystalline PHB). When the level of PHB in the bacterial carrier is high, similar beneficial effects can be achieved as crystalline PHB, but at a lower live food enrichment concentration expressed on PHB basis.
