Bisphenol P (BPP) is a structural analog of bisphenol A (BPA) and is increasingly used as a substitute of BPA in commercial and household applications. In recent years, BPP has been frequently detected in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Very little epidemiological and experimental information are available on the toxicity potential of BPP in human and animal systems, which is very concerning in view of its increasing use. The current study evaluated the biochemical and histopathological effects of BPP in rats. The seven experimental groups (n = 5 rats/group) included BPA5 (5 mg), BPA50 (50 mg), BPA100 (100 mg), BPP5 (5 mg), BPP50 (50 mg), and BPP100 (100 mg) while the remaining one group served as untreated control. At the end of treatment, the organs (liver, kidney, heart, and lung) of rats were harvested for oxidative stress and histopathological analyses. A significant (p < .05) decrease was observed in the weight of the liver, lungs, and kidneys in the BPP100 group similar to the BPA100 group compared with the control group. Further, a significant (p < .05) decrease was also observed for concentrations of antioxidant enzymes (catalase, peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase) in the liver, lungs, kidneys, and heart at the highest two doses of BPP similar to the respective BPA groups compared with the control group. The two highest doses of BPP induced histopathological changes in the liver such as nuclei distortion, excessive necrosis of hepatocytes, nuclei shrinkage and pyknosis of cells with disrupted cell structure (BPP100), and cellular congestion and degeneration of hepatocytes (BPP50) similar to the two respective doses of BPA. The BPP treated groups also showed varying histopathological changes in kidney tissue, heart tissue, and lung tissue similar to BPA treated rats. In conclusion, the present study indicated that BPP has the potential to induce oxidative stress and alter the histomorphological architecture of different organs and is as deleterious as BPA.

The purpose of this study was to examine the potential hypoglycemic effects of administering ginger (Zingiber officinale) and garlic (Allium sativum) to rats with induced type 2 diabetes. A total of forty-five male adult albino rats were randomly assigned to five groups. The groups were named Normal Control, Diabetic Control, Ginger group, Garlic group and a combination group of ginger and garlic. Diabetes was produced in all groups, except the normal control group, using an intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin at a dosage of 60 mg/body weight. During the course of two months, rats were administered varying amounts of ginger and garlic powders as part of their treatment After the experiment concluded, measurements were taken for glycated hemoglobin, serum glucose, insulin, cholesterol, high density protein, low density protein and liver glycogen levels. These groups exhibited considerably greater serum insulin and high-density lipoprotein concentrations (P<0.05) compared to the diabetic control group. Conversely, body weight, fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein, and glycated hemoglobin levels were significantly lower (P<0.05) in all groups compared to the diabetic control group. A statistically significant increase (P<0.05) increase shown in liver glycogen levels. This study proposes that the utilization of ginger and garlic powders improve the condition of type 2 diabetes and maybe reduce the risk of subsequent diabetic complications.

Humans develop osteoporosis as they age, a disease characterized by the slow and consistent reduction in bone mass and the subsequent risk of fractures. Due to aging, the mesenchymal stem cells within the bone marrow niche, show a shift in differentiation from osteogenesis to adipogenesis. The challenge of osteoporosis treatment is being met with advances in nanotechnology and tissue engineering. In this study , we evaluated the potential of palygorskite clay mineral microparticles for the promotion of the osteogenic differentiation in human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) in vitro. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and Alizarin red staining showed that osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs is enhanced in the presence of palygorskite clay. Although, gene expression analysis did not reveal upregulation of several osteogenic markers in the presence of the clay microparticles, another interaction mechanism resulted in the enhanced osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs. The charged surfaces of the palygorskite clay particles interact with the stem cells using their high adhesion characteristics, leading to complete bridging, adherence, and enveloping of the stem cells' cadherins and integrins with their environment. This restoration of the adhesion among the stem cells and their environment most probably promotes/restores the osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs. Therefore, palygorskite clay microparticles are a promising candidate for further in vivo studies on bone regeneration.

Therapeutic role of antioxidant against lipid profile and lipoprotein (choline) was observed by the different researchers, but  clinical evidences required about the use of antioxidant vitamins against the lipoproteins. Patients with clinical evidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) confirmed by standard diagnostic techniques were followed. Newly or recently, diagnosed case subjects were recruited wherever possible. At least 120 cases, subjects both male and female with CVD were selected from a local hospital. Four groups developed on the base of antioxidant therapy and blood samples were collected at zero day, 20 days, 40 days and 60 days. vitamins C and E are the major dietary cellular and lipid antioxidants, respectively; we found no evidence to support the use of vitamin or antioxidant supplements in the reduction of mortality. However, they are helpful in the management of prevention of cardiovascular disease.

RESUMO

A 33-year-old woman who had received a diagnosis of tricuspid valve endocarditis caused by MRSA was evaluated for replacement of the tricuspid valve. Videos show giant systolic pulsations during jugular venous examination and severe tricuspid regurgitation during transthoracic ECG.

Glaciers are also known as solid reservoirs, and in this regard, Pakistan is a blessed country to have enriched glaciers. The change in glacial extent becomes very crucial for rivers whose discharges are associated with glacier melt. Even a little change in the glacial extent may bring a significant change in the resulting river flows. Considering climate change scenarios, many researchers have predicted future flows in such catchments. But in almost all such studies, the reduction in the glaciers is not normally based on any rational. Therefore, research is needed in order to estimate how glaciers are actually behaving under the change of temperature and precipitations to better estimate the future flows. For this purpose, Chitral watershed was considered as the study area. The seasonal change in the snow extent was estimated by using MODIS data for various years that helped to identify the month with minimum glacial extent. With the help of remote sensing, unsupervised classification was performed to estimate the glacier area in Chitral watershed. The results show a definite receding trend with respect to time in the glaciers of the region for the past decade.

Background Hypocalcemia remains the most frequent complication after thyroidectomy. It can either be transient or permanent, and patients often find it unpleasant due to its association with prolonged hospitalization. The objective of this study was to determine the role of preoperative calcium and vitamin D supplementation in preventing hypocalcemia after subtotal/total thyroidectomy. Material and methods This quasi-experimental study was conducted at the Department of General Surgery, Ayub Teaching Hospital, Abbottabad, Pakistan, from January 2023 to July 2023. We utilized non-probability purposive sampling. Patients undergoing total thyroidectomy were recruited and followed until discharge to ascertain outcomes. They were divided into two groups: Group A received vitamin D (200,000 IU) one week preoperatively as single intramuscular dose and calcium (1 gm) orally two times daily for one week preoperatively, while Group B served as the control. Venous blood samples were taken post-surgery, on the second and seventh day and at day 30 to assess hypocalcemia. Chi-square test was employed, comparing hypocalcemia in both groups with a p-value ≤0.05 considered significant. Results One hundred thirty-two patients underwent subtotal/total thyroidectomy, with 46.2% (n = 61) being male and 53.8% (n = 71) female. The mean age of these patients was 37.12 ± 6.22 years, ranging from 20 to 50 years, and 57.6% (n = 76) were aged over 35 years. More than half (55.3%, n = 73) hailed from rural areas, while 4.7% (n = 59) resided in urban locales. Among the patients, 15.9% (n = 21) had a history of diabetes, and 24.2% (n = 32) were hypertensive. The mean body mass index (BMI) was 23.32 ± 2.41 kg/m2, with 7.6% (n = 10) classified as obese. The mean preoperative serum calcium level was 9.87 ± 1.07 mg/dL. Postoperatively, the mean serum calcium level was 8.74 ± 0.83 mg/dL. Both Group A (preoperative vitamin D and calcium supplementation) and Group B (control) demonstrated comparable baseline characteristics before undergoing thyroidectomy. The incidence of postoperative hypocalcemia was notably lower in Group A, with only 4.5% (n = 3) experiencing this complication. By contrast, 24.2% (n = 16) of patients in Group B, the control group, developed hypocalcemia (P = 0.001). Conclusion Our study supports the use of preoperative calcium and vitamin D supplementation in patients undergoing thyroidectomy to combat hypocalcemia. The treated group showed significantly lower hypocalcemia compared to the untreated group B. We recommend preoperative calcium and vitamin D supplementation for all thyroidectomy patients to reduce related morbidities and hospitalization duration.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the arsenic concentration and related health risks in groundwater extracted from tube wells. The physicochemical parameters, including arsenic (As), were investigated using standard procedures. The parameters were found within the permissible limits except for arsenic, which was 78 µg/L. Unfortunately, 82% of the collected water samples were found contaminated with arsenic and exceeded the permissible limit set by the world health organization (10 µg/L). The water intake and its relationship between arsenic concentration, time, and induced symptoms in the study area residents were observed. Skin pigmentation, skin irritation, and numbness of the body were recognized as the major symptoms, and these symptoms were significantly correlated with p-value ˂ 0.05. In comparison, individuals who intake As-contaminated water (> 50 µg/L) for a duration of > 20 years show severe symptoms. Furthermore, health risk assessment associated with arsenic in terms of chronic daily intake (CRI), hazard quotient (HQ), and cancer risk assessment probability (CR) in groundwater was also studied. The HQ of arsenic was 7.46, and the CR value of As on Ravi road was as high as 0.00149, which indicates a possibility of cancer risk in the community Ravi road, Lahore. Based on the findings, the study area needs special monitoring and management of groundwater to reduce health risks associated with contaminated drinking water. Moreover, suitable remediation methods for removing arsenic should be adopted to avoid arsenic exposure and related health risks.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common progressive neurodegenerative movement disorder. The cardinal feature of Parkinson's is neuronal degeneration causing a dopamine deficit in the brain which leads to a host of clinical features in the patient. However, consensus over specific clinical criteria for diagnosis remains to be established. Parkinson's does not have a cure yet, but a variety of diagnostic and treatment protocols have been developed over the years with a primary focus on pharmacological therapy. Anti-parkinsonian drugs such as levodopa lose their efficacy over time and are needed in higher doses as the disease inevitably progresses. An alternative to pharmacological therapy is deep brain stimulation (DBS). Deep brain stimulation involves transcranial placement of unilateral or bilateral leads (wires) most commonly in the sub-thalamic nucleus or the globus pallidus interna of the brain by stereotactic surgery. Given the multiple hypotheses explaining the different effects of DBS with sometimes conflicting mechanisms, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact way in which DBS operates. Nevertheless, it has proven to be significantly effective. DBS, although being a cost-effective treatment measure for Parkinson's patients, is not without limitations. A careful selection of patients is required preoperatively that determines the response and tolerance to the therapy in patients. This review aims to summarize the current literature on DBS in Parkinson's with a focus on the hypothesized mechanisms, selection criteria, advantages and its limitations.

Background: Celiac disease (CD) was considered a rare disease before and was perceivably only limited to children but now affects almost 1-2% of the global population. This abrupt increase in prevalence is due to advancements in diagnostic criteria and medical facilities but still many countries lack the basic data that can assess the severity of this health issue. The present study was conducted with the aim to assess the common but rarely diagnosed condition with the identification of its underlying secondary ailments. Materials and methods: Patients visiting public sector hospitals were recruited and tested for clinical symptoms secondary to gluten-containing foods (wheat and barley, etc.), followed by serological testing for immunoglobulin A, tissue transglutaminase A, and anti-endomysial antibodies. Only seropositive candidates were included in the endoscopic and biopsy examination for the features of villous atrophy and intestinal cell damage. The secondary ailments including anemia, growth retardation, and gastrointestinal symptoms were also documented for the tested positive patients. The modified European Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) criterion was followed throughout the study. Results: From 647 suspected cases from March 2018 to July 2019, 113 were confirmed with CD while 58% were female children and 42% were male children. The majority of them were from a lower class (75%) and 26% of them had a positive family history of CD. A total of 67% of patients with CD were underweight while wasting was observed in 38%, and 80% were stunted as well. Of the positively tested patients with CD, 49% had moderate anemia with 15% having severe anemia. Approximately 33% had hypoalbuminemia as well. The majority of them had a mild to severe range of gastrointestinal symptoms, such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, flatus, eructation, diarrhea, and steatorrhea. Conclusion: The study finding indicates an increased number of patients diagnosed with CD with an excessive sum of secondary ailments, such as anemia, growth failure, growth retardation, malnutrition, and gastrointestinal symptoms.

Using a combination of a parametrized density-functional method for the calculation of the total energy of a given structure and a genetic-algorithm method for the unbiased determination of the structure of the lowest total energy, we have determined structural, energetic, and electronic properties of Si(n), Ge(n), and Si(n)Ge(n) clusters with 2-44 atoms. With various specifically developed descriptors, particularly stable clusters are identified, and the structures, overall shapes, bonding patterns, and structural similarities are analyzed and quantified. Finally, the energies of the HOMO and the LUMO are analyzed, and their energy difference is compared with the stability of the clusters.

Lycopene, belonging to the carotenoids, is a tetraterpene compound abundantly found in tomato and tomato-based products. It is fundamentally recognized as a potent antioxidant and a non-pro-vitamin A carotenoid. Lycopene has been found to be efficient in ameliorating cancer insurgences, diabetes mellitus, cardiac complications, oxidative stress-mediated malfunctions, inflammatory events, skin and bone diseases, hepatic, neural and reproductive disorders. This review summarizes information regarding its sources and uses amongst different societies, its biochemistry aspects, and the potential utilization of lycopene and possible mechanisms involved in alleviating the abovementioned disorders. Furthermore, future directions with the possible use of this nutraceutical against lifestyle-related disorders are emphasized. Its protective effects against recommended doses of toxic agents and toxicity and safety are also discussed.

Dibutyl phthalate is an important phthalate ester extensively used in various products like plastics, adhesives, inks, pharmaceuticals, lacquers, varnishes, paper coatings, safety glasses, and cosmetics. The exposure of DBP to "one's health" is therefore inevitable. The present study focuses on elucidating the effect of low doses of DBP on anthropometric parameters and markers of obesity in rats in a 13-week study. A total of 48 rats were divided into three treatment groups as mg DBP/kg body weight per day: (a) 0 mg/kg (control), (b) 10 mg/kg (DBP-10), and (c) 50 mg/kg (DBP-50). The rats in each treatment (n = 16) were further equally divided into male and female rats for studying treatment and gender interaction. Anthropometric parameters, nutritional determinants, and markers of obesity in rats were studied. Two-way ANOVA was used to analyze the data (p < 0.05). Tukey's post hoc test was used for pairwise comparisons. DBP increased body weight gain, feed efficiency, abdominal to thoracic circumference ratio, and body mass index in rats. Serum cholesterol and alkaline phosphatase concentrations decreased with DBP treatment. Serum albumin, glucose, creatinine, and alanine transaminase increased with DBP treatments. Serum lactate dehydrogenase increased in DBP-10 but was not affected by DBP-50. Further low-dose investigations are needed to assess non-monotonic dose responses.

We report the synthesis and evaluation of lecithin-gold hybrid nanocarriers for the oral delivery of drugs with improved pharmacokinetics, Au-drug interactive bioactivity and controlled drug releasing behavior at physiological pH inside human body. For this purpose, diacerein, a hydrophobic anti-arthritic drug, was loaded in lecithin NPs (LD NPs), which were further coated by Au NPs either by in-situ production of Au NPs on LD NPs or by employing pre-synthesized Au NPs. All LDAu NPs were found to release drug selectively at the physiological pH of 7.4 and showed 2.5 times increase in the oral bioavailability of diacerein. Pharmacological efficacy was significantly improved i.e., greater than the additive effect of diacerein and Au NPs alone. LDAu NPs started suppressing inflammation at first phase, whereas LD NPs showed activity in the second phase of inflammation. These results indicate the interaction of Au NPs with prostaglandins and histaminic mediators of first phase of carrageenan induced inflammation. Acute toxicity study showed no hepatic damage but the renal toxicity parameters were close to the upper safety limits. Toxicity parameters were dependent on surface engineering of LDAu NPs. Apart from enhancing the oral bioavailability of hydrophobic drugs and improving their anti-inflammatory activity, these hybrid nanocarriers may have potential applications in gold-based photothermal therapy and the tracing of inflammation at atherosclerotic and arthritic site.
