RESUMO

Multiple paternity (MP) is a phenomenon observed for more than 30 elasmobranch species. The Batoidea is more specious than the Selachii, but only three studies of MP have been conducted on batoids. The occurrence of MP in freshwater stingrays was tested using microsatellite markers, which were developed for Potamotrygon leopoldi. Six mothers and their litters were genotyped, providing the first evidence of MP for Potamotrygonidae, with an MP frequency of 33%.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Chemotherapy-related amenorrhea (CRA) is a surrogate for ovarian toxicity and associated risk of infertility and premature menopause. Here, we compare CRA rate with paclitaxel (T)-trastuzumab (H) to that with ado-trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1). METHODS: Patients with T1N0 HER2 + early-stage breast cancer (eBC) enrolled on the ATEMPT trial and were randomized 3:1 to T-DM1 3.6 mg/kg IV every (q) 3 weeks (w) × 17 vs. T 80 mg/m2 with H IV qw × 12 (4 mg/kg load → 2 mg/kg), followed by H (6 mg/kg IV q3w × 13). Enrollees who self-reported as premenopausal were asked to complete menstrual surveys at baseline and every 6-12 months for 60 months. 18-month CRA (no periods reported during prior 6 months on 18-month survey) was the primary endpoint of this analysis. RESULTS: Of 512 ATEMPT enrollees, 123 who began protocol therapy and answered baseline and at least one follow-up menstrual survey were premenopausal at enrollment. 76 had menstrual data available at 18 months without having received a gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist or undergone hysterectomy and/or oophorectomy. Median age was 45 (range 23-53) among 18 who had received TH and 46 (range 34-54) among 58 who had received T-DM1. The 18-month rate of CRA was 50% after TH and 24% after T-DM1 (p = 0.045). CONCLUSION: Amenorrhea at 18 months was less likely in recipients of adjuvant T-DM1 than TH. Future studies are needed to understand how T-DM1 impacts risk of infertility and permanent menopause, and to assess amenorrhea rates when T-DM1 is administered after standard HER2-directed chemotherapy regimens.

RESUMO

Multiple myeloma (MM) is associated to an increased incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE). IMPEDE-VTE score constitutes a valuable risk assessment tool for VTE prediction in first-line MM patients. Nevertheless, refinement of the primary thromboprophylaxis category of this score (which pools aspirin and heparin) seems desirable. To investigate the role of the type of thromboprophylaxis, within IMPEDE-VTE score, for VTE prediction in MM patients. Retrospective analysis of a single-center cohort of 438 MM patients receiving first-line antimyeloma treatment (1991-2020). IMPEDE-VTE score was calculated. Primary thromboprophylaxis was additionally stratified into aspirin- and heparin-based regimen subgroups. VTE risk was analyzed by Cox regression. Median follow-up during first-line antimyeloma treatment was 6.0 months (IQR 4.1-9.0 months). Twenty-three patients developed VTE (5.3%, 95%CI 3.4-7.8%). IMPEDE-VTE score showed a notable predictive value (area under the ROC curve: 0.70, 95%CI 0.60-0.80). Cox analysis confirmed that 1-point increase in the score resulted in a 1.3-fold increase in VTE risk (HR 1.30, 95%CI 1.13-1.53, p < 0.001). In the multivariable analysis, the type of primary thromboprophylaxis (heparin versus aspirin) was an independent predictive factor (HR 0.15, 95% CI 0.05-0.47, p = 0.001). The combined model showed a higher goodness-of-fit (Akaike Information Criterion [AIC]: 99) than IMPEDE-VTE separately (AIC:235). Our analysis contributes to the external validation of IMPEDE-VTE score for the prediction of VTE in MM. But more interestingly, our results demonstrate that among those patients receiving thromboprophylaxis, the type of regimen (heparin versus aspirin) adds independent predictive value and should be explored for a more accurate risk assessment.

RESUMO

Chromoblastomycosis is one of the most prevalent implantation fungal infections caused by melanized fungi, affecting individuals with certain risk factors with high morbidity due to its recalcitrant nature. It is difficult to identify the etiological agents and thus a suitable reproductive molecular identification method applicable in developing countries has been investigated. We report the identification of four different fungal causative agents of chromoblastomycosis by reverse line blotting hybridization (RLB) based on biotin-labeled PCR products and amine labeled probes to hybridize. Sixty five reference strains, including type strains, i.e. Fonsecaea pedrosoi, F. monophora, F. nubica, and Phialophora verrucosa, obtained from the CBS-KNAW were included in this study. Internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) regions of relevant species were aligned and adjusted using BIONUMERICS v. 4.61 in order to design four specific probes to identify informative nucleotide polymorphisms. The final identification of these species by RLB assay was concordant with ITS sequencing and showed 100% specificity with no cross hybridization, able to identify all tested strains. The time and cost were less compare to other routine identification methods such as sequencing. This assay allows sensitive and specific simultaneous detection and identification of a different fungal species.

RESUMO

AIM: Repeated, ongoing exposure to pain influences the growth, cognitive and motor functions, behaviour, personality and neurodevelopment of preterm infants. We compared the analgesic effects of expressed breast milk (EBM) and 24% oral sucrose on preterm neonates during venipuncture. METHODS: This multicentre randomised, noninferiority, crossover trial focused on five neonatal university units in Madrid, Spain, from October 2013 to October 2014. It comprised 66 preterm infants born at less than 37 weeks and randomly split into two groups. They received either EBM or sucrose two minutes before venepuncture, together with nonnutritive sucking and swaddling, then the opposite procedure at a later point. Pain was measured with the premature infant pain profile (PIPP) and crying was also measured. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences between the groups. The PIPP scores were seven (4-9) with breast milk and six (4-8.25) with sucrose (p = 0.28). The 11 infants born at under 28 weeks of age showed higher median scores of nine (9-14) for breast milk and four (4-7) for sucrose (p = 0.009). CONCLUSION: EBM and 24% sucrose had the same analgesic effect during venipuncture in most of the preterm neonates, but sucrose worked better in extremely preterm infants.

RESUMO

The black yeast genus Exophiala includes numerous potential opportunistic species that potentially cause systematic and disseminated infections in immunocompetent individuals. Species causing systemic disease have ability to grow at 37-40 °C, while others consistently lack thermotolerance and are involved in diseases of cold-blooded, waterborne vertebrates and occasionally invertebrates. We explain a fast and sensitive assay for recognition and identification of waterborne Exophiala species without sequencing. The ITS rDNA region of seven Exophiala species (E. equina, E. salmonis, E. opportunistica, E. pisciphila, E. aquamarina, E. angulospora and E. castellanii) along with the close relative Veronaea botryosa was sequenced and aligned for the design of specific padlock probes for the detection of characteristic single-nucleotide polymorphisms. The assay demonstrated to successfully amplify DNA of target fungi, allowing detection at the species level. Amplification products were visualized on 1% agarose gels to confirm specificity of probe-template binding. Amounts of reagents were reduced to prevent the generation of false positive results. The simplicity, tenderness, robustness and low expenses provide padlock probe assay (RCA) a definite place as a very practical method among isothermal approaches for DNA diagnostics.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Our objective was to develop a prognostic stratification tool that enables patients with cancer and pulmonary embolism (PE), whether incidental or symptomatic, to be classified according to the risk of serious complications within 15 days. METHODS: The sample comprised cases from a national registry of pulmonary thromboembolism in patients with cancer (1075 patients from 14 Spanish centres). Diagnosis was incidental in 53.5% of the events in this registry. The Exhaustive CHAID analysis was applied with 10-fold cross-validation to predict development of serious complications following PE diagnosis. RESULTS: About 208 patients (19.3%, 95% confidence interval (CI), 17.1-21.8%) developed a serious complication after PE diagnosis. The 15-day mortality rate was 10.1%, (95% CI, 8.4-12.1%). The decision tree detected six explanatory covariates: Hestia-like clinical decision rule (any risk criterion present vs none), Eastern Cooperative Group performance scale (ECOG-PS; <2 vs ⩾2), O2 saturation (<90 vs ⩾90%), presence of PE-specific symptoms, tumour response (progression, unknown, or not evaluated vs others), and primary tumour resection. Three risk classes were created (low, intermediate, and high risk). The risk of serious complications within 15 days increases according to the group: 1.6, 9.4, 30.6%; P<0.0001. Fifteen-day mortality rates also rise progressively in low-, intermediate-, and high-risk patients: 0.3, 6.1, and 17.1%; P<0.0001. The cross-validated risk estimate is 0.191 (s.e.=0.012). The optimism-corrected area under the receiver operating characteristic curve is 0.779 (95% CI, 0.717-0.840). CONCLUSIONS: We have developed and internally validated a prognostic index to predict serious complications with the potential to impact decision-making in patients with cancer and PE.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Factor XI (FXI) deficiency is a rare disorder with molecular heterogeneity in Caucasians but relatively frequent and molecularly homogeneous in certain populations. AIM: To characterize FXI deficiency in a Spanish town of 60 000 inhabitants. METHODS: A total of 324 764 APTT tests were screened during 20 years. FXI was evaluated by FXI:C and by Western blot. Genetic analysis of F11 was performed by sequencing, multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification and genotyping. RESULTS: Our study identified 46 unrelated cases and 170 relatives with FXI deficiency carrying 12 different genetic defects. p.Cys56Arg, described as founder mutation in the French-Basque population, was identified in 109 subjects from 24 unrelated families. This mutation was also identified in 2% of the general population. p.Cys416Tyr, c.1693G>A and p.Pro538Leu were identified in 7, 6 and 2 unrelated families, respectively. NGS analysis of the whole F11 gene revealed a common haplotype for each of the four recurrent mutations, suggesting a founder effect. The analysis of plasma FXI of four p.Pro538Leu homozygous carriers revealed that this variant was not activated by FXIIa. We identified four mutations previously described in other Caucasian subjects with FXI deficiency (p.Lys536Asn; p.Thr322Ile, p.Arg268Cys and c.325G>A) and four new gene defects: p.(Cys599Tyr) potentially causing a functional deficiency, p.(Ile426Thr), p.(Ile592Thr) and the first worldwide duplication of 1653 bp involving exons 8 and 9. Bleeding was rare and mild. CONCLUSIONS: Our population-cohort study supplies new evidences that FXI deficiency in Caucasians is more common than previously thought and confirmed the wide underlying genetic heterogeneity, caused by both recurrent and sporadic mutations.

RESUMO

The order Chaetothyriales (Pezizomycotina, Ascomycetes) harbours obligatorily melanised fungi and includes numerous etiologic agents of chromoblastomycosis, phaeohyphomycosis and other diseases of vertebrate hosts. Diseases range from mild cutaneous to fatal cerebral or disseminated infections and affect humans and cold-blooded animals globally. In addition, Chaetothyriales comprise species with aquatic, rock-inhabiting, ant-associated, and mycoparasitic life-styles, as well as species that tolerate toxic compounds, suggesting a high degree of versatile extremotolerance. To understand their biology and divergent niche occupation, we sequenced and annotated a set of 23 genomes of main the human opportunists within the Chaetothyriales as well as related environmental species. Our analyses included fungi with diverse life-styles, namely opportunistic pathogens and closely related saprobes, to identify genomic adaptations related to pathogenesis. Furthermore, ecological preferences of Chaetothyriales were analysed, in conjuncture with the order-level phylogeny based on conserved ribosomal genes. General characteristics, phylogenomic relationships, transposable elements, sex-related genes, protein family evolution, genes related to protein degradation (MEROPS), carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes), melanin synthesis and secondary metabolism were investigated and compared between species. Genome assemblies varied from 25.81 Mb (Capronia coronata) to 43.03 Mb (Cladophialophora immunda). The bantiana-clade contained the highest number of predicted genes (12 817 on average) as well as larger genomes. We found a low content of mobile elements, with DNA transposons from Tc1/Mariner superfamily being the most abundant across analysed species. Additionally, we identified a reduction of carbohydrate degrading enzymes, specifically many of the Glycosyl Hydrolase (GH) class, while most of the Pectin Lyase (PL) genes were lost in etiological agents of chromoblastomycosis and phaeohyphomycosis. An expansion was found in protein degrading peptidase enzyme families S12 (serine-type D-Ala-D-Ala carboxypeptidases) and M38 (isoaspartyl dipeptidases). Based on genomic information, a wide range of abilities of melanin biosynthesis was revealed; genes related to metabolically distinct DHN, DOPA and pyomelanin pathways were identified. The MAT (MAting Type) locus and other sex-related genes were recognized in all 23 black fungi. Members of the asexual genera Fonsecaea and Cladophialophora appear to be heterothallic with a single copy of either MAT-1-1 or MAT-1-2 in each individual. All Capronia species are homothallic as both MAT1-1 and MAT1-2 genes were found in each single genome. The genomic synteny of the MAT-locus flanking genes (SLA2-APN2-COX13) is not conserved in black fungi as is commonly observed in Eurotiomycetes, indicating a unique genomic context for MAT in those species. The heterokaryon (het) genes expansion associated with the low selective pressure at the MAT-locus suggests that a parasexual cycle may play an important role in generating diversity among those fungi.

RESUMO

The current consensus on the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of essential thrombocythemia (ET) is based on experts' recommendations. However, several aspects of the diagnosis of, prognosis of, and therapy for ET are still controversial. The Delphi method was employed with an expert panel of members of the Spanish Group of Ph-negative Myeloproliferative Neoplasms in order to identify the degree of agreement on the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of ET. Nine leading experts selected a total of 41 clinical hematologists with well-known expertise in ET. An electronic questionnaire was used to collect the questions rated in a four-step scale. The questions were grouped into four blocks: diagnosis, risk stratification, goals of therapy, and treatment strategy. After the first round consisting of 80 questions, a second round including 14 additional questions focused on the recommendations advocated by experts of the European LeukemiaNet in 2011 was analyzed. The median and mean values for the first and second rounds were calculated. A summary of the conclusions considered as the most representative of each block of questions is presented. The Delphi method is a powerful instrument to address the current approaches and controversies surrounding ET.

RESUMO

Very few data exist on the management of adult patients diagnosed with primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). The objectives of this study were to describe the diagnostic and treatment patterns for ITP and to compare the findings to recent ITP guidelines. We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of adult ITP patients diagnosed with primary ITP between January 2011 and June 2012 and examined whether management strategies were consistent or not with eight recent guideline-recommended practices. Overall, median age at the diagnosis of the disease (n = 101) was 58 years and median platelet count 12 × 10(9)/L with 75.2 % of patients having symptoms of ITP. The study perceived two major shortcomings in the diagnostic approach: (1) failure to perform peripheral blood film examination in 22.8 % of patients, a test that is mandatory by all guidelines, and (2) ordinary bone marrow assessment in more than half of the patients at diagnosis (50.5 %), a test not routinely recommended by guidelines. Low appropriateness in therapeutic management of patients included (1) unjustified use of intravenous immunoglobulin in the absence of bleeding in 54.8 % of patients and (2) splenectomy not being deferred until 6-12 months from diagnosis (median 161 days). Data also reflect a trend towards the early use of thrombopoietin receptor agonists in the treatment of patients who are refractory to any first-line therapy. We have recognized important areas of inapropriateness in the diagnostic and therapeutic management of adult ITP patients. Compliance with established guidelines should be encouraged in order to improve patient outcomes.

RESUMO

Cryptococcosis, caused by Cryptococcus gattii sensu lato, is an emerging disease that was initially found in (sub)tropical regions but recently expanded to temperate regions. Cryptococcus gattii s.l. infections are mostly encountered in healthy individuals, frequently affecting both lungs and the central nervous system (CNS). Usually, C. gattii s.l. is less susceptible to antifungal compounds than its counterpart, C. neoformans s.l. We studied 18 clinical C. gattii s.l. isolates with amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) fingerprinting, mating-typing, multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) and antifungal susceptibility testing. All isolates were C. deuterogattii (genotype AFLP6/VGII), 14 were mating-type α and four were type a. Amphotericin B, itraconazole, voriconazole, posaconazole and isavuconazole showed high activity, with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ranges of 0.063-0.25, 0.031-0.25, 0.031-0.25, 0.031-0.25 and <0.016-0.25 µg mL-1, respectively. Fluconazole and flucytosine had high geometric mean MICs of 2.07 and 3.7 µg mL-1, respectively. Most cases occurred in immunocompetent patients (n = 10; 55.6 %) and CNS involvement was the most common clinical presentation (n = 14; 77.8 %). Three patients (16.7 %) showed sequelae, hyperreflexia, dysarthria, diadochokinesia, anosmia and upper limb weakness. In conclusion, all infections were caused by C. deuterogattii (AFLP6/VGII) and the majority of patients were immunocompetent, with the CNS as the most affected site. All antifungal drugs had high in vitro activity against C. deuterogattii isolates, except fluconazole and flucytosine.

RESUMO

Melanisation has been considered to be an important virulence factor of Fonsecaea monophora. However, the biosynthetic mechanisms of melanisation remain unknown. We therefore used next generation sequencing technology to investigate the transcriptome and digital gene expression data, which are valuable resources to better understand the molecular and biological mechanisms regulating melanisation in F. monophora. We performed de novo transcriptome assembly and digital gene expression (DGE) profiling analyses of parent (CBS 122845) and albino (CBS 125194) strains using the Illumina RNA-seq system. A total of 17 352 annotated unigenes were found by BLAST search of NR, Swiss-Prot, Gene Ontology, Clusters of Orthologous Groups and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) (E-value <1e‒5). A total of 2 283 unigenes were judged to be the differentially expressed between the two genotypes. We identified most of the genes coding for key enzymes involved in melanin biosynthesis pathways, including polyketide synthase (pks), multicopper oxidase (mco), laccase, tyrosinase and homogentisate 1,2-dioxygenase (hmgA). DEG analysis showed extensive down-regulation of key genes in the DHN pathway, while up-regulation was noted in the DOPA pathway of the albino mutant. The transcript levels of partial genes were confirmed by real time RT-PCR, while the crucial role of key enzymes was confirmed by either inhibitor or substrate tests in vitro. Meanwhile, numbers of genes involved in light sensing, cell wall synthesis, morphology and environmental stress were identified in the transcriptome of F. monophora. In addition, 3 353 SSRs (Simple Sequence Repeats) markers were identified from 21 600 consensus sequences. Blocking of the DNH pathway is the most likely reason of melanin deficiency in the albino strain, while the production of pheomelanin and pyomelanin were probably regulated by unknown transcription factors on upstream of both pathways. Most of genes involved in environmental tolerance to oxidants, irradiation and extreme temperatures were also assembled and annotated in transcriptomes of F. monophora. In addition, thousands of identified cSSR (combined SSR) markers will favour further genetic linkage studies. In conclusion, these data will contribute to understanding the regulation of melanin biosynthesis and help to improve the studies of pathogenicity of F. monophora.

RESUMO

Somatic mutations in the CALR gene were recently discovered in a substantial proportion of Philadelphia-negative chronic myeloproliferative neoplasm (cMPN) patients lacking JAK2 and MPL mutations. Somatically acquired defects are not the only pathogenic mechanism involved in these disorders. Since germline JAK2 46/1 haplotype predisposes to cMPN-associated mutations, including JAK2V617F and MPLW515K7L, we evaluated whether the 46/1 haplotype also confers susceptibility to CALR-mutated cMPN, both in sporadic and familial cases. The single-nucleotide polymorphism rs10974944, which tags 46/1, was investigated in 155 sporadic MPN patients and 270 unrelated controls, as well as in 11 familial cMPN cases and 36 unaffected relative controls. As described elsewhere, the 46/1 haplotype was overrepresented, both in sporadic and familial cMPN. In sporadic cMPN, the JAK2 46/1 haplotype was closely associated with JAK2V617F (p = 0.0003) but not with JAK2-nonmutated cases. Analysis of CALR-mutated sporadic cMPN (n = 22) showed no association between CALR mutations and 46/1 haplotype (p = 0.87). Regarding the familial cMPN, the prevalence of carriers of the G allele was higher in familial (81.8%) than in sporadic (62%) cMPN, but it did not differ significantly (p = 0.3). Although we described a family with carriers of both JAK2V617F and CALR mutations, due to the low number of CALR-mutated familial cases, we could not determinate whether the JAK2 46/1 haplotype predisposes or does not to CALR-mutated familial cMPN. We conclude, for the first time, that the 46/1 haplotype, unlike JAK2V617F and MPLW515K7L, is not associated with CALR-mutated cMPN.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Buffy-coat (BC)-derived platelet concentrates (PCs) are the predominant product for platelet transfusion in many countries. Two automated systems, OrbiSac and TACSI, have been introduced in blood centres to prepare these PCs, as an alternative to the manual method. We compared the in vitro quality of PCs prepared by both methods during standard storage. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Twenty primary BC pools were split into two parts, which were processed with OrbiSac and TACSI system to obtain OrbiSac PCs (O-PCs) and TACSI PCs (T-PCs), respectively. On days 1, 5 and 7 of standard storage, samples were taken and the following analysed: cell count, metabolic variables, platelet function and content of activation and proinflammatory substances. RESULTS: Both the OrbiSac and TACSI systems produced PCs that meet the standards for platelet products in terms of platelet and leucocyte content. In vitro evaluation pointed to the similar preservation of platelet metabolism (pH, glucose, bicarbonate and lactate) in O-PCs and T-PCs. Moreover, there were no significant differences between O-PCs and T-PCs as regards the hypotonic shock response or in the platelet aggregation profile. The OrbiSac system caused greater platelet activation, which resulted in higher concentrations of sCD62P, RANTES and sCD40L on the day the PCs were prepared. CONCLUSION: The systems OrbiSac and TACSI can be used to produce buffy-coat-derived PCs whose cell content, platelet function and metabolism are similar during standard storage. However, the preparation with the OrbiSac system induces a transient increase in platelet activation and release of proinflammatory substances.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Inaccuracy of fingerstick haemoglobin compromises donor's health and losses blood donations. We evaluated the benefit of double haemoglobin screening with HemoCue. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Blood donors underwent fingerstick screening by HemoCue and were driven for donation if capillary haemoglobin was within the regulatory range. Those failing were drawn venous blood and donated if their venous haemoglobin determined with HemoCue was acceptable. RESULTS: Of 276 605 donor clinic visits, 10 011 (3·6%) were assessed by two-step haemoglobin screening using HemoCue, because of low (n = 9444) or high (n = 567) capillary haemoglobin. Among these, 2561 (25·6%) were deemed eligible [recovered donations]. The recovery rate was 23·8% and 55·0% among donors presenting with low and high capillary haemoglobin, respectively. In both categories of attempted donations, capillary and venous haemoglobin with HemoCue correlated significantly in recovered donors (R(2)  ≈ 0·5-0·7) but not in deferred visits (R(2)  < 0·15). Venous haemoglobin with HemoCue and by haematological analyzer significantly correlated in all donations attempts (R(2)  ≈ 0·7). Donors presenting with low capillary haemoglobin showed small bias between capillary and venous haemoglobin by HemoCue (-2·4 ± 6·2 g/l), fingerstick haemoglobin and venous haemoglobin with counter (1·3 ± 7·3 g/l), and venous haemoglobin with HemoCue and counter (3·7 ± 3·9 g/l). This bias was slightly greater in donors with high capillary haemoglobin (-7·5 ± 7·8, 13·7 ± 7·5, and 6·2 ± 7·5, respectively). Double haemoglobin screening by HemoCue reached an accuracy of 87·3% for qualifying donors presenting with low fingerstick haemoglobin. CONCLUSIONS: Double haemoglobin measurement with HemoCue [fingerstick and venous blood if required] is feasible and allows a significant recovery of blood donations.

RESUMO

The in vitro activities of eight antifungal drugs against 106 clinical and environmental isolates of waterborne and cutaneous Exophiala species were tested. The MICs and minimum effective concentrations for 90% of the strains tested (n = 106) were, in increasing order, as follows: posaconazole, 0.063 µg/ml; itraconazole, 0.25 µg/ml; micafungin, 1 µg/ml; voriconazole, 2 µg/ml; isavuconazole, 4 µg/ml; caspofungin, 8 µg/ml; amphotericin B, 16 µg/ml; fluconazole, 64 µg/ml.

RESUMO

AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of life in patients having surgery for a digestive neoplasm and to monitor how the patient's perception evolves during the first 6 months after surgery. METHOD: A prospective study was carried out on the pre and postoperative quality of life of patients undergoing surgery for a digestive system neoplasm between May 2009 and December 2010. Patients were asked to complete the Short Form (36) Health Survey questionnaire (SF-36; spanish version 1.4). RESULTS: The study included 80 patients. At 1 month after surgery there was a statistically significant improvement in some domains of the SF-36. At 6 months, a statistically significant improvement was seen in physical functioning, social functioning, mental health and in the two physical and mental domains. We also found statistically significant differences, with women having a worse quality of life. CONCLUSION: Comparison of quality of life before and 6 months after surgical intervention showed improvement in both the psychological and the physical elements. This can be attributed to the fact that the patients have had time to recover from the surgery.
