AIMS: Citrus canker caused by Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri (X. citri) is a disease of economic importance. Control of this disease includes the use of metallic copper, which is harmful to the environment and human health. Previous studies showed that the crude extract from the fungus Pseudogymnoascus sp. LAMAI 2784 isolated from Antarctic soil had in vitro antibacterial action against X. citri. The aim of the present study was to expand the applications of this extract. METHODS AND RESULTS: In greenhouse assays, the crude extract was able to reduce bacterial infection on citrus leaves from 1.55 lesions/cm2 (untreated plants) to 0.04 lesions/cm2. Bisdechlorogeodin was identified as the main compound of the bioactive fraction produced by Pseudogymnoascus sp. LAMAI 2784, which inhibited bacterial growth in vitro (IC90 ≈ 156 µg ml-1) and permeated 80% of X. citri cells, indicating that the membrane is the primary target. CONCLUSION: The present results showed that the bioactive fraction of the extract is mainly composed of the compound bisdechlorogeodin, which is likely responsible for the biological activity against X. citri, and the main mechanism of action is the targeting of the cell membrane. This study indicates that bisdechlorogeodin has valuable potential for the control of X. citri.

AIMS: The control of Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri (X. citri), causal agent of citrus canker, relies heavily on integrated agricultural practices involving the use of copper-based chemicals. Considering the need for alternatives to control this disease and the potential of fungi from extreme environments as producers of bioactive metabolites, we isolated and identified a bioactive compound from Penicillium sp. CRM 1540 isolated from Antarctica marine sediment. METHODS AND RESULTS: The potential of compound as an antibacterial agent against X. citri was assessed through in vitro and greenhouse experiments. Molecular taxonomy indicates that this fungus is a possible new species of Penicillium. Results revealed 90% bacterial inhibition in vitro at 25 µg ml- 1 and a decrease in 75.37% of citrus canker symptoms emergency in vivo in treated leaves of Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck considering the number of lesions per cm2 (p < 0.05) in comparison with the control. The structure of the active agent was identified as penicillic acid based on a detailed spectroscopic analysis. CONCLUSION: Penicillic acid can be an alternative against citrus canker. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF STUDY: Research into extremophile micro-organisms can identify molecules with biotechnological potential and alternatives to current agricultural practices.

OBJECTIVE: To develop an International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health core set for patients with knee dysfunction. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: The study was conducted at all levels of care (general community, primary care units, rehabilitation clinics/centers, hospital). PARTICIPANTS: Participants (N=388) with knee dysfunction with or without clinical diagnosis of knee pathology, with or without complaint of pain, with or without instability, and/or with or without knee movement restriction of any type. INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Participants were assessed using the core sets for acute and postacute musculoskeletal conditions, the subjective form from the International Knee Documentation Committee scale, the self-report of general health and functionality, and the general health and functionality classified by the researcher. To identify the categories that best explain knee dysfunction, linear regression analyses were performed. RESULTS: Twenty-four categories were identified from the 75 core set categories for acute and postacute musculoskeletal conditions. Eleven categories belong to the component body functions, 3 represent body structures, 7 represent activities and participation, and 3 represent environmental factors. CONCLUSIONS: A core set for knee dysfunction that can be used at all levels of health care was proposed, which offers a system for disability assessment related to knee dysfunction, including environmental and social factors. These factors are important for a broad assessment because they include the multiple aspects of functionality, usually not considered in other knee dysfunction assessment instruments. Further analysis of the content and construct validity of the core set is required.

Bacterial diseases caused by members of the genus Xanthomonas affect agricultural crops of great importance in the world. At least 350 different plant diseases are caused by species of Xanthomonas. Important crops, such as: rice, citrus, cassava, tomato, sugar cane, passionfruit and brassicas are severely affected by bacteria of this genus. Due to its rapid propagation, handling difficulties, problems with chemical control and severity of the losses of the affected plantations Xanthomonas is a difficult obstacle for agriculture around the world. In addition, chemical control of some of these diseases is carried out using copper-based chemicals, which causes a negative impact on health and the environment. A more sustainable alternative to combat these diseases is the control of Xanthomonas by microorganisms directly or indirectly through the use of its secondary metabolites involved in biocontrol. This review is a report concerning the recent advances in the search for microorganisms for the biocontrol of several Xanthomonas that are important for the world economy.

Plant pathogens cause great economic losses in agriculture. To reduce damage, chemical pesticides have been frequently used, but these compounds in addition to causing risks to the environment and health, its continuous use has given rise to resistant phytopathogens, threatening the efficiency of control methods. One alternative for such a problem is the use of natural products with high antifungal activity and low toxicity. Here, we present the production, isolation, and identification of cyclopaldic acid, a bioactive compound produced by Penicillium sp. CRM 1540, a fungal strain isolated from Antarctic marine sediment. The crude extract was fractionated by reversed-phase chromatography and yielded 40 fractions, from which fraction F17 was selected. We used 1D and 2D Nuclear Magnetic Resonance analysis in DMSO-d6 and CDCl3, together with mass spectrometry, to identify the compound as cyclopaldic acid C11H10O6 (238 Da). The pure compound was evaluated for antimicrobial activity against phytopathogenic fungi of global agricultural importance, namely: Macrophomina phaseolina, Rhizoctonia solani, and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. The antifungal assay revealed the potential of cyclopaldic acid, produced by Penicillium sp. CRM 1540, as a leading molecule against M. phaseolina and R. solani, with more than 90% of growth inhibition after 96h of contact with the fungal cells using 100 µg mL-1, and more than 70% using 50 µg mL-1. RESUMO

Congenital anomalies of extraocular muscles are rare and few cases have been described, most occurring in patients with craniosynostosis and chromosomal abnormalities. However, these anatomical abnormalities of extraocular muscles can occur in healthy individuals and should be suspected especially in cases of atypical strabismus. We report a patient with strabismus and anatomical anomalies involving superior oblique and superior rectus muscles of both eyes associated with mirrored movements of the hands.

For a long time, Pantaneiro and Campeiro breeds were raised only within their places of origin. Consequently, there are few of these horses; therefore, establishing reproductive and clinical standards for these animals is necessary to implant new biotechnologies for reproduction to preserve their genetics. This study aimed to perform a descriptive evaluation of fetal age determination by fetus ocular orbit measurement in mares of the Campeiro and Pantaneiro breeds. We also evaluated sequential changes in hematology and biochemistry for foals from birth to six months of life by counting red blood cells, hemoglobin concentration, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, leukocytes, neutrophils, lymphocytes, eosinophils, monocytes, basophils, platelet count, fibrinogen, albumin, plasma protein, creatinine, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, gamma-glutamyl transferase, and globulins. There was no significant difference in relation to fetal gestational age and ocular orbit between the two breeds (P = 0.578). There was no significant difference in the hematological parameters between the Campeiro and Pantaneiro foals, but there were differences in the means and changes in the blood variables when compared to the literature. These hematological and biochemical variations provide useful information for clinical evaluations from Campeiro and Pantaneiro foals up to six months of age.
