Microplastics (MPs) overlap in size with phytoplankton and can be ingested by zooplankton, transferring them to higher trophic levels. Copepods are the most abundant metazoans among zooplankton and the main link between primary producers and higher trophic levels. Ingestion of MPs has been investigated in the laboratory, but we still know little about the ingestion of MPs by zooplankton in the natural environment. In this study, we determined the concentration and characteristics of MPs down to 10 µm in zooplankton samples, sorted calanoid copepods, and fecal pellets collected in the Kattegat/Skagerrak Sea (Denmark). We found a median concentration of 1.7 × 10-3 MPs ind-1 in the zooplankton samples, 2.9 × 10-3 MPs ind-1 in the sorted-copepods, and 3 × 10-3 MPs per fecal pellet. Most MPs in the zooplankton samples and fecal pellets were fragments smaller than 100 µm, whereas fibers dominated in the sorted copepods. Based on the collected data, we estimated a MP budget for the surface layer (0-18 m), where copepods contained only 3% of the MPs in the water, while 5% of the MPs were packed in fecal pellets. However, the number of MPs exported daily to the pycnocline via fecal pellets was estimated to be 1.4% of the total MPs in the surface layer. Our results indicate that zooplankton are an entry point of small MPs in the food web, but the number of MPs in zooplankton and their fecal pellets was low compared with the number of MPs found in the water column and the occurrence and/or ingestion of MPs reported for nekton. This suggests a low risk of MP transferring to higher trophic levels through zooplankton and a quantitatively low, but ecologically relevant, contribution of fecal pellets to the vertical exportation of MPs in the ocean.

Shape matters for microplastics, but its definition, particularly for hyperspectral imaged microplastics, remains ambiguous and inexplicit, leading to incomparability across data. Hyperspectral imaging is a common approach for quantification, yet no unambiguous microplastic shape classification exists. We conducted an expert-based survey and proposed a set of clear and concise shapes (fiber, rod, ellipse, oval, sphere, quadrilateral, triangle, free-form, and unidentifiable). The categories were validated on images of 11,042 microplastics from four environmental compartments (seven matrices: indoor air; wastewater influent, effluent, and sludge; marine water; stormwater; and stormwater pond sediments), by inviting five experts to score each shape. We found that the proposed shapes were well defined, representative, and distinguishable to the human eye, especially for fiber and sphere. Ellipse, oval, and rod were though less distinguishable but dominated in all water and solid matrices. Indoor air held more unidentifiable, an abstract shape that appeared mostly for particles below 30 µm. This study highlights the need for assessing the recognizability of chosen shape categories prior to reporting data. Shapes with a clear and stringent definition would increase comparability and reproducibility across data and promote harmonization in microplastic research.

Microplastics accumulate in stormwater and can ultimately enter freshwater recipients, and pose a serious risk to aquatic life. This study investigated the effectiveness of lab-scale horizontal flow sand filters of differing lengths (25, 50 and 100 cm) in retaining four types of thermoplastic microplastics commonly occurring in stormwater runoff (polyamide, polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyethylene terephthalate). Despite the differences in particle shape, size and density, the study revealed that more than 98% of the spiked microplastics were retained in all filters, with a slightly increased removal with increased filter length. At a flow rate of 1 mL/min and after one week of operation, 62-84% of the added microplastics agglomerated in the first 2 cm of the filters. The agglomerated microplastics included 96% of high-density fibers. Larger-sized particles were retained in the sand media, while microplastics smaller than 50 µm were more often detected in the effluent. Microplastics were quantified and identified using imaging based micro Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. The efficient retention of microplastics in low-flow horizontal sand filters, demonstrated by the results, highlights their potential importance for stormwater management. This retention is facilitated by various factors, including microplastic agglomeration, particle sedimentation of heavy fibers and favorable particle-to-media size ratios.

Treatment of tunnel wash runoff water and road runoff water before it reaches the environment is recommended to limit the negative consequences of traffic-related pollution. The efficiency of existing water treatment systems to remove traffic-related microplastic (MP) has not been sufficiently documented. Expanding the knowledge about traffic-related MP and documenting the treatment efficiency of MP in road tunnel wash water (TWW) and road runoff (RRW) treatment systems were the objectives of the presented project. TWW from the Tåsen tunnel, Norway, and RRW from the Fossbekken sedimentation pond were investigated in summer and winter situations. Six commonly available polymer types, tire rubber tread particles (TRP), and road marking paints (RMP) were analyzed in the selected samples. About 0.12 and 0.26 µg/L of polymers were identified in winter and summer TWWs. Significantly higher tire rubber and road marking paint concentrations were identified in the winter sample compared to summer sample. Suspended particle concentration in the Fossbekken RRW treatment pond effluent was lower in the summer than in the winter sample. About 0.002 and 0.0008 µg/L polymer masses were identified in winter and summer samples, respectively. TRP in the winter and summer samples were 0.7 and 0.2 µg7/L, and 13.4 µg/L RMP was found in the winter sample, while it was only 0.008 µg/L in the summer sample.

The seafloor is the major sink for microplastic (MP) pollutants. However, there is a lack of robust data on the historical evolution of MP pollution in the sediment compartment, particularly the sequestration and burial rate of small MPs. By combining a palaeoceanographic approach and state-of-the-art analytical methods for MP identification down to 11 µm in size, we present the first high-resolution reconstruction of MP pollution from an undisturbed sediment core collected in the NW Mediterranean Sea. Furthermore, we investigate the fate of MPs once buried in the sediments by evaluating the changes in the size distribution of the MPs and the weathering status of the polyolefins, polyethylene, and polypropylene. Our results indicate that the MP mass sequestered in the sediment compartment mimics the global plastic production from 1965 to 2016. We observed an increase in the weathering status of the polyolefins as the size decreased. However, the variability in the size and weathering status of the MPs throughout the sedimentary record indicated that these pollutants, once incorporated into sediments, remain preserved with no further degradation under conditions lacking remobilization.

Microplastics were characterized in eight water treatment works (WTWs) in England and Wales (UK). Sources included river water, groundwater, and an upland reservoir. Water treatment varied from disinfection, filtration, sedimentation, and activated carbon techniques. At each WTW, five repeat samples of raw and potable water and two repeat sludge samples were taken over 5 months. Microplastics in water were captured on 10 µm filters and nonplastic materials digested in the laboratory. Microplastics ≥25 µm were analyzed using Fourier-transform infrared microscopy. Blanks revealed consistent polyethylene (PE), poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), and polypropylene (PP) contamination. Spike recoveries for 63-90 µm polyamide microplastics demonstrated 101% (standard deviation, SD 27%) and 113% (SD 15%) recovery for raw and potable waters and 52% (SD 13%) for sludge. Only four of the six WTWs sampled for raw water and only two of eight WTWs in their potable water had microplastics above the limit of quantification. Considering only the WTWs with quantifiable microplastics, then on average, 4.9 microplastic particles/L were present in raw water and only 0.00011 microplastic particles/L were present in potable water (99.99% removal). Values in waste sludge were highly variable. PE, PET, and PP were the most common polymers quantified in raw water and sludge, and polystyrene and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene were the most common polymers quantified in potable water.

Mass transfer of a range of volatile substances was studied under highly turbulent conditions. The applied setup mimicked drop structures, where the release of volatile organic carbons likely occurs at a high rate. The experiments covered several substances in a range of resistances from residing entirely in the liquid film to being fully in the gas film. The two-film theory yielded a good prediction of the whole measured range. This allowed the experimental validation of a method where two reference substances are applied, to determine the transfer of any other substance - independently of where its resistance to mass transfer resides. One finding was that the range of dimensionless Henry's constants, where both films contributed by more than 5%, was 0.0027 to 1.05, which is over five times higher than the accepted rule of thumb (0.0005-0.18). Another finding was that the ratio between the liquid and the gas film mass transfer coefficients of the reference substances was similar for the two drop configurations studied. If this holds true over a wider range of configurations, such a ratio constitutes a valuable shortcut to the current practice of ignoring gas film resistance in the estimation of mass transfer rates.

Traditionally, sulfide abatement has been done by adding e.g. ferrous or ferric iron salts to the start of sewer force mains. Iron dosage must hence correspond to an estimate of how much sulfide will form while the wastewater stays in the main, which is not straightforward. Adding iron salts at the end of the main has the advantage that the exact amount of sulfide to precipitate, in principle, can be known. A drawback is that the reaction time is short compared to start-of-pipe treatment. Sulfide precipitation rates and the concentration of sulfide left after the process had run to completion were measured using an online hydrogen sulfide probe to resolve the fast precipitation reaction. Experiments were conducted in anaerobic wastewaters spiked with sulfide, and carried out under different pH conditions and with various iron-to-sulfide ratios. Sulfide precipitation rates were demonstrated to be faster with Fe(III) than with Fe(II). Experiments furthermore showed that for Fe(III), pH was the controlling parameter, whereas for Fe(II) both pH and the iron-to-sulfide ratio were important. Proposed are model equations to predict variables for the rate equations, which can be adopted by practitioners dealing with sulfide abatement.

This study is related to distribution temperature sensing (DTS) in sewers for tracing illicit or unintended inflows to foul sewers. A DTS measurement is performed with a fiber optic cable that is installed at the invert of a sewer pipe in combination with a standalone laser/computer instrument. This set-up generates in-sewer temperature measurements with high resolutions in time (every minute) and space (every metre) along the cable over long periods of time (weeks on end). The prolonged monitoring period in combination with the high level of detail in the dataset allows the study of anomalies (i.e., unexpected temperatures and/or temperature variations at certain locations), even if these only occur very infrequently. The objective of this paper is to develop an automated tool to analyze the large data masses and identify anomalies caused by illicit or unintended inflows. In this study, an algorithm for detecting the temperature changes that are caused by both wastewater discharge and inflow of stormwater are developed. A comparison of the results of the automated procedure to the results of a manual assessment of the datasets (Elmehaven, Denmark) shows that the automated procedure performs very well.

Addition of ferrous and ferric iron salts to wastewater is a commonly used practice for sulfide abatement in sewer force mains. When iron is added to wastewater where sulfate respiration takes place, it produces ferrous sulfide precipitates with the formed sulfide. The effect of iron addition has traditionally been focused on solely from the perspective of reaction stoichiometry. Possible influences on the microbial communities in biofilms growing in force mains have largely been neglected. In this study the activity and microbiome was examined in three pilot scale force mains conveying real wastewater, two subjected to iron treatment and one operated as an untreated control. Activity was measured on suspended biofilm samples extracted from the experimental setup. The microbiome of the biofilm was analyzed by V3 + V4 16S rDNA sequencing. Correlation analysis of chemical composition of the biofilms and activity measurements for operational taxonomic units of relevance to sulfide and methane production were performed. In conclusion, it was found that both ferrous and ferric treatment reduced sulfate reduction and methane production, and that both iron salts induced significant changes to force main biofilm microbiomes.

For engineering purposes it is especially useful to be able to predict and control sewer corrosion rates and odor impacts as well as to design effective measures aiming to reduce effects related to hydrogen sulfide formation and release. Doing so, it is important to use modeling tools that are capable of assessing variations of dissolved oxygen, dissolved sulfide and hydrogen sulfide gas concentrations for a wide range of environmental scenarios. Two such models were assessed: AEROSEPT, an empirical formulation, and WATS, a conceptual and more complex approach. The models were applied to evaluate the effects of transitions between pressure mains and gravity sewers in the air-liquid mass transfer of hydrogen sulfide at the Ericeira sewer system in Portugal. This network is known to have odor and corrosion problems, especially during summer. Despite the unavoidable uncertainties due to the unsteady flow rate and the quantification of air velocity and turbulence, the simulation results obtained with both models have been shown to adequately predict the overall behavior of the system.

Over the last decades, considerable progress has been made in the understanding of the sulfur cycle in sewer systems. In spite of a wealth of experimental and field studies that have addressed the release of hydrogen sulfide from free surface flows in gravity sewers and the corresponding air-water mass transfer, little is known about hydrogen sulfide emission under highly turbulent conditions (e.g., drop structures, hydraulic jumps). In this study, experimental work was carried out to analyze the influence of characteristics of drops on reaeration. Physical models were built, mimicking typical sewer drop structures and allowing different types of drops, drop heights, tailwater depths and flow rates. In total, 125 tests were performed. Based on their results, empirical expressions translating the relationship between the mass transfer of oxygen and physical parameters of drop structures were established. Then, by applying the two-film theory with two-reference substances, the relation to hydrogen sulfide release was defined. The experiments confirmed that the choice of the type of drop structure is critical to determine the uptake/emission rates. By quantifying the air-water mass transfer rates between free-fall and backdrop types of drop, the latter resulted in considerably lower oxygen uptake rates.

The presence and fate of hydrogen sulfide in wastewater systems were studied in two stretches of an intercepting sewer system located in a coastal village, in Portugal. A range of hydraulic parameters were obtained and liquid and gas phase measurements were carried out, both continuously and through intensive sampling campaigns. Upstream, where flow rates were relatively low, dissolved sulfide concentrations around 12 mg S L-1 and hydrogen sulfide gas concentrations above 250 ppm were observed, along with limited corrosion damage. It is believed this is due to the low relative humidity detected along the atmosphere of the studied sewer system. Downstream, gas concentrations were always below 40 ppm. Despite that, high signs of corrosion were detected, particularly in manholes with drop structures. It is thought that condensation of spray produced by the fall is the main cause of the phenomenon. Another relevant observation was the rapid decline in dissolved sulfide contents along gravity trunk sewers following the discharge of rising mains, with loss rates as high as 40 mg S L-1 h-1. Air-flow velocities corresponded to 15-50% of wastewater flows, an observation which agrees with other authors' publications addressing relatively small pipes and moderate water flows.

Terbutryn is a commonly used biocide in construction materials. Especially polymer-resin-based renders and paints, used in external thermal insulation composite systems, are very susceptible to microbial deterioration. Previous studies have shown that biocides leach out of the material when contacted with rainwater; thus, they reach surface waters where they might have adverse effects on aquatic organisms. The knowledge on the long-term leaching performance and especially the formation and fate of degradation products is rare. In the present study, the leaching of terbutryn from artificial walls equipped with two types of render was observed for 19 months. In addition to concentration and mass load determinations for terbutryn, photodegradation products were identified and studied in the leachate and render. The results show that terbutryn leached mainly within the first 6-12 months. During the exposure, only 3% of the initial terbutryn was emitted to the runoff, while 64-80% remained in the coating. The overall mass balance could be closed by including several degradation products. Contrary to expectations, the major fraction of transformation products remained in the material and was not washed off immediately, which is of high importance for the long-term assessment of biocides in coating materials.

The present study focuses on anaerobic organic matter transformation processes in force mains for the purpose of improving existing sewer process models. Wastewater samples were obtained at 100 m intervals from a 1 km long pilot scale force main and measured for several wastewater parameters. Transformation rates for selected parameters were calculated and their spatial variability analyzed. In terms of electron transfer, fermentation was the most significant process, resulting in a net volatile fatty acid formation of 0.83 mmol/L. Sulfate reduction resulted in a production of 0.73 mmol/L of inorganic sulfide. Methanogenesis was negligable in all experiments despite an anaerobic residence time of more than 30 hours. As a result of the anaerobic processes, the wastewater pH decreased by approximately one pH unit, resulting in a corresponding increase in the fraction of molecular hydrogen sulfide. A significant spatial variablilty was observed for the average transformation rates of all parameters.

Several experiments have been conducted in order to improve the understanding of the wastewater drag and the wall frictional force acting on the headspace air in gravity sewers. The aim of the study is to improve the data basis for a numerical model of natural sewer ventilation. The results of the study shows that by integrating the top/side wall shear stresses the log-law models for the air velocity distribution along the unwetted perimeter resulted in a good agreement with the friction forces calculated by use of the Colebrook-White formula for hydraulic smooth pipes. Secondly, the water surface drags were found by log-law models of the velocity distribution in turbulent flows to fit velocity profiles measured from the water surface and by integrating the water surface drags along the wetted perimeter, mean water surface drags were found and a measure of the water surface drag coefficient was found.

Pharmaceuticals and Personal care products (PPCPs) are often found in effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) due to insufficient removal during wastewater treatment processes. To understand the factors affecting the removal of PPCPs in classical activated sludge WWTPs, the present study was performed to assess the removal of frequently occurring pharmaceuticals (Naproxen, Fenoprofen, Ketoprofen, Dichlofenac, Carbamazepine) and the biocide Triclosan in activated sludge from four different Danish WWTPs. The respective degradation constants were compared to operational parameters previous shown to be of importance for degradation of micropollutants such as biomass concentration, and sludge retention time (SRT). The most rapid degradation, was observed for NSAID pharmaceuticals (55-90% for Fenoprofen, 77-94% for Ketoprofen and 46-90% for Naproxen), followed by Triclosan (61-91%), while Dichlofenac and Carbamazepine were found to be persistent in the systems. Degradation rate constants were calculated as 0.0026-0.0407 for NSAID pharmaceuticals and 0.0022-0.0065 for triclosan. No relationships were observed between degradation rates and biomass concentrations in the diverse sludges. However, for the investigated PPCPs, the optimal SRT was within 14-20 days (for these values degradation of these PPCPs was the most efficient). Though all of these parameters influence the degradation rate, none of them seems to be overall decisive. These observations indicate that the biological composition of the sludge is more important than the design parameters of the respective treatment plant.

An extensive measuring campaign targeted on sewer odor problems was undertaken in San Francisco. It was assessed whether a conceptual sewer process model could reproduce the measured concentrations of total sulfide in the wastewater and H2S gas in the sewer atmosphere, and to which degree such simulations have potential for further improving odor and sulfide management. The campaign covered measurement of wastewater sulfide by grab sampling and diurnal sampling, and H2S gas in the sewer atmosphere was logged. The tested model was based on the Wastewater Aerobic/Anaerobic Transformations in Sewers (WATS) sewer process concept, which never had been calibrated to such an extensive dataset. The study showed that the model was capable of reproducing the general levels of wastewater sulfide, wastewater pH, and sewer H2S gas. It could also reproduce the general variability of these parameters, albeit with some uncertainty. It was concluded that the model could be applied for the purpose in mind.
