RESUMO

The changes in mean-squared charge radii of neutron-deficient gold nuclei have been determined using the in-source, resonance-ionization laser spectroscopy technique, at the ISOLDE facility (CERN). From these new data, nuclear deformations are inferred, revealing a competition between deformed and spherical configurations. The isotopes ^{180,181,182}Au are observed to possess well-deformed ground states and, when moving to lighter masses, a sudden transition to near-spherical shapes is seen in the extremely neutron-deficient nuclides, ^{176,177,179}Au. A case of shape coexistence and shape staggering is identified in ^{178}Au which has a ground and isomeric state with different deformations. These new data reveal a pattern in ground-state deformation unique to the gold isotopes, whereby, when moving from the heavy to light masses, a plateau of well-deformed isotopes exists around the neutron midshell, flanked by near-spherical shapes in the heavier and lighter isotopes-a trend hitherto unseen elsewhere in the nuclear chart. The experimental charge radii are compared to those from Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations using the D1M Gogny interaction and configuration mixing between states of different deformation. The calculations are constrained by the known spins, parities, and magnetic moments of the ground states in gold nuclei and show a good agreement with the experimental results.

The mean-square charge radii of ^{207,208}Hg (Z=80, N=127, 128) have been studied for the first time and those of ^{202,203,206}Hg (N=122, 123, 126) remeasured by the application of in-source resonance-ionization laser spectroscopy at ISOLDE (CERN). The characteristic kink in the charge radii at the N=126 neutron shell closure has been revealed, providing the first information on its behavior below the Z=82 proton shell closure. A theoretical analysis has been performed within relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov and nonrelativistic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approaches, considering both the new mercury results and existing lead data. Contrary to previous interpretations, it is demonstrated that both the kink at N=126 and the odd-even staggering (OES) in its vicinity can be described predominately at the mean-field level and that pairing does not need to play a crucial role in their origin. A new OES mechanism is suggested, related to the staggering in the occupation of the different neutron orbitals in odd- and even-A nuclei, facilitated by particle-vibration coupling for odd-A nuclei.

An experimental realization of a compact, high-power spectral beamsplitter for nearly equal frequencies and identical polarization based on two-beam interference in a free-space Mach-Zehnder interferometer is presented. We demonstrate the power- and cost-efficient generation and subsequent spatial separation of two laser tones from a single sum-frequency-generation stage using double-sideband suppressed-carrier modulation in the infrared, and beam splitting in the visible at high power. The interferometer spectrally splits >98 % of the incident power when accounting for bulk absorption. The beamsplitter can be constructed identically for any power or spectral range required for which suitable optics are available.

The properties of exotic nuclei on the verge of existence play a fundamental part in our understanding of nuclear interactions. Exceedingly neutron-rich nuclei become sensitive to new aspects of nuclear forces. Calcium, with its doubly magic isotopes (40)Ca and (48)Ca, is an ideal test for nuclear shell evolution, from the valley of stability to the limits of existence. With a closed proton shell, the calcium isotopes mark the frontier for calculations with three-nucleon forces from chiral effective field theory. Whereas predictions for the masses of (51)Ca and (52)Ca have been validated by direct measurements, it is an open question as to how nuclear masses evolve for heavier calcium isotopes. Here we report the mass determination of the exotic calcium isotopes (53)Ca and (54)Ca, using the multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer of ISOLTRAP at CERN. The measured masses unambiguously establish a prominent shell closure at neutron number N = 32, in excellent agreement with our theoretical calculations. These results increase our understanding of neutron-rich matter and pin down the subtle components of nuclear forces that are at the forefront of theoretical developments constrained by quantum chromodynamics.

The neutron-rich isotopes ^{58-63}Cr were produced for the first time at the ISOLDE facility and their masses were measured with the ISOLTRAP spectrometer. The new values are up to 300 times more precise than those in the literature and indicate significantly different nuclear structure from the new mass-surface trend. A gradual onset of deformation is found in this proton and neutron midshell region, which is a gateway to the second island of inversion around N=40. In addition to comparisons with density-functional theory and large-scale shell-model calculations, we present predictions from the valence-space formulation of the ab initio in-medium similarity renormalization group, the first such results for open-shell chromium isotopes.

The masses of the neutron-rich copper isotopes ^{75-79}Cu are determined using the precision mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP at the CERN-ISOLDE facility. The trend from the new data differs significantly from that of previous results, offering a first accurate view of the mass surface adjacent to the Z=28, N=50 nuclide ^{78}Ni and supporting a doubly magic character. The new masses compare very well with large-scale shell-model calculations that predict shape coexistence in a doubly magic ^{78}Ni and a new island of inversion for Z<28. A coherent picture of this important exotic region begins to emerge where excitations across Z=28 and N=50 form a delicate equilibrium with a spherical mean field.

Masses adjacent to the classical waiting-point nuclide ^{130}Cd have been measured by using the Penning-trap spectrometer ISOLTRAP at ISOLDE/CERN. We find a significant deviation of over 400 keV from earlier values evaluated by using nuclear beta-decay data. The new measurements show the reduction of the N=82 shell gap below the doubly magic ^{132}Sn. The nucleosynthesis associated with the ejected wind from type-II supernovae as well as from compact object binary mergers is studied, by using state-of-the-art hydrodynamic simulations. We find a consistent and direct impact of the newly measured masses on the calculated abundances in the A=128-132 region and a reduction of the uncertainties from the precision mass input data.

The recently confirmed neutron-shell closure at N=32 has been investigated for the first time below the magic proton number Z=20 with mass measurements of the exotic isotopes (52,53)K, the latter being the shortest-lived nuclide investigated at the online mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP. The resulting two-neutron separation energies reveal a 3 MeV shell gap at N=32, slightly lower than for 52Ca, highlighting the doubly magic nature of this nuclide. Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov and ab initio Gorkov-Green function calculations are challenged by the new measurements but reproduce qualitatively the observed shell effect.

Modeling the composition of neutron-star crusts depends strongly on binding energies of neutron-rich nuclides near the N = 50 and N = 82 shell closures. Using a recent development of time-of-flight mass spectrometry for on-line purification of radioactive ion beams to access more exotic species, we have determined for the first time the mass of (82)Zn with the ISOLTRAP setup at the ISOLDE-CERN facility. With a robust neutron-star model based on nuclear energy-density-functional theory, we solve the general relativistic Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations and calculate the neutron-star crust composition based on the new experimental mass. The composition profile is not only altered but now constrained by experimental data deeper into the crust than before.

Using the example of metal clusters, an experimental setup and procedure is presented, which allows for the generation of size and charge-state selected polyanions from monoanions in a molecular beam. As a characteristic feature of this modular setup, the further charging process via sequential electron attachment within a three-state digital trap takes place after mass-selection. In contrast to other approaches, the rf-based concept permits access to heavy particles. The procedure is highly flexible with respect to the preparation process and potentially suitable for a wide variety of anionic species. By adjusting the storage conditions, i.e., the radio frequency, to the change in the mass-to-charge ratio, we succeeded in producing clusters in highly negative charge states, i.e., Ag800 7-. The capabilities of the setup are demonstrated by experiments extracting electronic and optical properties of polyanionic metal clusters by analyzing the corresponding photoelectron spectra.

We present the design, construction, and characterization of an experimental system capable of supporting a broad class of quantum simulation experiments with hundreds of spin qubits using 9Be+ ions in a Penning trap. This article provides a detailed overview of the core optical and trapping subsystems and their integration. We begin with a description of a dual-trap design separating loading and experimental zones and associated vacuum infrastructure design. The experimental-zone trap electrodes are designed for wide-angle optical access (e.g., for lasers used to engineer spin-motional coupling across large ion crystals) while simultaneously providing a harmonic trapping potential. We describe a near-zero-loss liquid-cryogen-based superconducting magnet, employed in both trapping and establishing a quantization field for ion spin-states and equipped with a dual-stage remote-motor LN2/LHe recondenser. Experimental measurements using a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) probe demonstrate part-per-million homogeneity over 7 mm-diameter cylindrical volume, with no discernible effect on the measured NMR linewidth from pulse-tube operation. Next, we describe a custom-engineered inbore optomechanical system which delivers ultraviolet (UV) laser light to the trap and supports multiple aligned optical objectives for topview and sideview imaging in the experimental trap region. We describe design choices including the use of nonmagnetic goniometers and translation stages for precision alignment. Furthermore, the optomechanical system integrates UV-compatible fiber optics which decouple the system's alignment from remote light sources. Using this system, we present site-resolved images of ion crystals and demonstrate the ability to realize both planar and three-dimensional ion arrays via control of rotating wall electrodes and radial laser beams. Looking to future work, we include interferometric vibration measurements demonstrating root-mean-square trap motion of ∼33 nm (∼117 nm) in the axial (transverse) direction; both values can be reduced when operating the magnet in free-running mode. The paper concludes with an outlook toward extensions of the experimental setup, areas for improvement, and future experimental studies.

Electron beam ion traps (EBITs) are ideal tools for both production and study of highly charged ions (HCIs). In order to reduce their construction, maintenance, and operation costs, we have developed a novel, compact, room-temperature design, the Heidelberg Compact EBIT (HC-EBIT). Four already commissioned devices operate at the strongest fields (up to 0.86 T) reported for such EBITs using permanent magnets, run electron beam currents up to 80 mA, and energies up to 10 keV. They demonstrate HCI production, trapping, and extraction of pulsed Ar16+ bunches and continuous 100 pA ion beams of highly charged Xe up to charge state 29+, already with a 4 mA, 2 keV electron beam. Moreover, HC-EBITs offer large solid-angle ports and thus high photon count rates, e.g., in x-ray spectroscopy of dielectronic recombination in HCIs up to Fe24+, achieving an electron-energy resolving power of E/ΔE > 1500 at 5 keV. Besides traditional on-axis electron guns, we have also implemented a novel off-axis gun for laser, synchrotron, and free-electron laser applications, offering clear optical access along the trap axis. We report on its first operation at a synchrotron radiation facility demonstrating the resonant photoexcitation of highly charged oxygen.

Three-dimensional reconstruction of medical images has emerged as an important visualization tool for studying complex anatomy. These tools have found important applications in neurology and plastic surgery using computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data. However, CT and MRI do not sufficiently delineate lesions of the pediatric airway. Inspection through the rod lens telescope remains the standard diagnostic method. A video recording of an endoscopic procedure is essentially a sequence of two-dimensional images captured as the telescope traverses the airway lumen. Using digitized endoscopic video recordings and computer graphics reconstruction techniques, we have developed a preliminary three-dimensional modeling system for the pediatric airway. A series of normal and abnormal telescopic airway examinations were video recorded. Serial sections were obtained by digitizing the video images at uniform intervals as the scope traversed the airway lumen between the vocal folds and the carina. The digitized images were calibrated and used to reconstruct the airway lumen in three dimensions. Classifying airway abnormalities according to the minimal cross-sectional area or with descriptive terms can be subjective and dependent on the endoscopist's observational skills. We hope that this preliminary work will lead to more precise and understandable methods for representing complex airway lesions.

To determine the influence of weight reduction on plasma lipoproteins, studies were carried out in 15 nondiabetic patients of varying degrees of obesity and four obese insulin-dependent diabetics. All studies were carried out on a metabolic ward and patients underwent three dietary periods: Period I, 4 to 5 weeks of weight maintenance in the obese state; Period II, caloric restriction to 1000 kcal/day to a weight loss of within 10% of ideal body weight; and Period III, again weight maintenance for 4 to 5 weeks near ideal body weight. Similar results were obtained for both nondiabetics and diabetics. Many patients had mildly elevated plasma triglycerides in Period I; they fell to the normal range in Period II and remained low in Period III. Total cholesterol levels decreased early in Period II, but levels began to rise near the end of caloric restriction, and in Period III, they were similar to Period I. Low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels followed a pattern similar to that of total cholesterol. High density lipoprotein cholesterol was relatively low in Period I (38 +/- 2 mg/dl +/- SEM); throughout weight loss, levels tended to rise, and in Period III, the average high density lipoprotein cholesterol was significantly higher (46 +/- 2 mg/dl).

This study was designed to determine effects of reducing intake of total fat and increasing carbohydrate (glucose) on plasma lipoproteins. Eleven men were investigated. They were given two diets for 1 month each. One diet contained 40% of calories as fat with 20% saturated fatty acids, 10% monounsaturates and 10% polyunsaturates. The other diet contained 30% fat with equal amounts of each type of fatty acid. The 10% of fat removed from the latter was replaced by glucose. Six patients had significant reductions of cholesterol in total plasma and low density lipoprotein (LDL) on the 30% fat; for the group as a whole; however, the decrease was not statistically significant. Total triglycerides increased modestly (15%) and high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol fell significantly (14%) on replacement of 40% fat with 30% fat. Seven patients also were given a 30% fat diet containing fatty acids in the same proportions as in the 40% fat diet. A similar response was noted as when fatty acids were given in equal ratios. This study indicates that response to reduction in fat content is inconsistent. The majority of patients were responders; others, however, were not.
