OBJECTIVE: To compare the short- and long-term outcomes of infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) treated with whole-body therapeutic hypothermia (TH), monitored by esophageal vs rectal temperature. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a secondary analysis of the multicenter High-Dose Erythropoietin for Asphyxia and Encephalopathy (HEAL) trial. All infants had moderate or severe HIE and were treated with whole-body TH. The primary outcome was death or neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI) at 22-36 months of age. Secondary outcomes included seizures, evidence of brain injury on magnetic resonance imaging, and complications of hypothermia. Logistic regression was used with adjustment for disease severity and site as clustering variable because cooling modality differed by site. RESULTS: Of the 500 infants who underwent TH, 294 (59%) and 206 (41%) had esophageal and rectal temperature monitoring, respectively. There were no differences in death or NDI, seizures, or evidence of injury on magnetic resonance imaging between the 2 groups. Infants treated with TH and rectal temperature monitoring had lower odds of overcooling (OR 0.52, 95% CI 0.34-0.80) and lower odds of hypotension (OR 0.57, 95% CI 0.39-0.84) compared with those with esophageal temperature monitoring. CONCLUSIONS: Although infants undergoing TH with esophageal monitoring were more likely to experience overcooling and hypotension, the rate of death or NDI was similar whether esophageal monitoring or rectal temperature monitoring was used. Further studies are needed to investigate whether esophageal temperature monitoring during TH is associated with an increased risk of overcooling and hypotension.

BACKGROUND: Pooling data from different sources will advance mental health research by providing larger sample sizes and allowing cross-study comparisons; however, the heterogeneity in how variables are measured across studies poses a challenge to this process. METHODS: This study explored the potential of using natural language processing (NLP) to harmonise different mental health questionnaires by matching individual questions based on their semantic content. Using the Sentence-BERT model, we calculated the semantic similarity (cosine index) between 741 pairs of questions from five questionnaires. Drawing on data from a representative UK sample of adults (N = 2,058), we calculated a Spearman rank correlation for each of the same pairs of items, and then estimated the correlation between the cosine values and Spearman coefficients. We also used network analysis to explore the model's ability to uncover structures within the data and metadata. RESULTS: We found a moderate overall correlation (r = .48, p < .001) between the two indices. In a holdout sample, the cosine scores predicted the real-world correlations with a small degree of error (MAE = 0.05, MedAE = 0.04, RMSE = 0.064) suggesting the utility of NLP in identifying similar items for cross-study data pooling. Our NLP model could detect more complex patterns in our data, however it required manual rules to decide which edges to include in the network. CONCLUSIONS: This research shows that it is possible to quantify the semantic similarity between pairs of questionnaire items from their meta-data, and these similarity indices correlate with how participants would answer the same two items. This highlights the potential of NLP to facilitate cross-study data pooling in mental health research. Nevertheless, researchers are cautioned to verify the psychometric equivalence of matched items.

OBJECTIVE: Despite strong evidence for its utility in clinical management and diagnosis of intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), the use of neonatal cranial point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has not been standardized in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in the United States. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of training NICU providers to perform cranial POCUS by tracking the quality of image acquisition following training. METHODS: Observational single-center cohort study of cranial POCUS images obtained by trained neonatal practitioners (attendings, fellows, and advanced practice providers) using a protocol developed by a radiologist and neonatologist. Exams were performed on infants born ≤1250 g and/or ≤30 weeks gestation within the first 3 days after birth. A survey to assess attitudes regarding cranial POCUS was given before each of three training sessions. Demographic and clinical data collection were portrayed with descriptive statistics. Metrics of image quality were assessed by a radiologist and sonographer independently. Analysis of trends in quality of POCUS images over time was performed using a multinomial Cochran-Armitage test. RESULTS: Eighty-two cranial POCUS scans were performed over a 2-year period. Infant median age at exam was 14 hours (IQR 7-22 hours). Metrics of image quality depicted quarterly demonstrated a significant improvement in depth (P = .01), gain (P = .048), and quality of anatomy images captured (P < .001) over time. Providers perceived increased utility and safety of cranial POCUS over time. CONCLUSION: Cranial POCUS image acquisition improved significantly following care team training, which may enable providers to diagnose ICH at the bedside.

Laparoscopic surgery is extensively utilized to treat a range of gynaecological conditions and pathologies. The advantages of laparoscopic surgery include the minimalization of blood loss and scarring, improved recovery times, and shorter hospital admissions. However, robotic technologies have had an increasing presence within gynaecological laparoscopic surgery in recent decades. This literature review therefore aims to discuss laparoscopy from 3 perspectives. First, the evolution of laparoscopy is reviewed with a focus on its origins, its transition from a diagnostic to an operative tool, and its role in present-day gynaecology. Second, interventions for benign gynaecological conditions (including excision of benign ovarian tumours, total laparoscopic hysterectomy, and laparoscopic myomectomy) are reviewed. The laparoscopic management of malignant gynaecology (including ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, and cervical cancer) is also discussed. Finally, whilst robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery is experiencing rapid technological advancement, it is pertinent to consider the extent of its benefits when compared to open or conventional laparoscopic approaches in gynaecological surgery.

PURPOSE: With over 100,000 procedures completed per year, hip and knee arthroplasty are two of the most common surgical procedures performed in Canada. There has been literature indicating that patient reported outcome measures (PROM) will start to plateau between six and 12 months. The purpose of this paper was to analyze the trajectory of PROMs following total hip and knee arthroplasty (THA and TKA), as well as assess the impact of any potential confounders on this trajectory. The central research question was: At what point do PROMS plateau among patients that undergo elective THA and TKA? METHODS: This study was a retrospective analysis of data from a prospective database. Patients were eligible if they had undergone an elective, primary THA/TKA with Oxford Scores recorded pre-operatively, and at least at two of the following four time points: six weeks, six months, one year, and two years. RESULTS: Mean pre-operative Oxford scores were 18.0 (7.8) for THA, and 20.1 (7.5) for TKA. For both THA and TKA, there were statistically significant interval improvements in Oxford scores from six weeks [THA: 33.8 (7.9)/TKA: 28.7 (7.8)] to six months [THA: 40.2 (7.3)/TKA: 35.9 (8.3)], and from six months to one year [THA: 41.0 (7.3)/TKA: 37.3 (8.4)], but not from one to two years [THA: 40.0 (8.5)/TKA: 36.4 (9.6)]. CONCLUSIONS: Patients undergoing either primary THA or TKA can expect clinically meaningful improvements in the first six months after surgery. Beyond this time point, there is a plateau in PROMs. These findings are important for both setting patient expectations in pre-operative discussions, and allowing surgeons to have a realistic understanding of their patients' expected post-operative course.

Methane capture via oxidation is considered one of the 'Holy Grails' of catalysis (Tucci and Rosenzweig, 2024). Methane is also a primary greenhouse gas that has to be reduced by 1.2 billion metric tonnes in 10 years to decrease global warming by only 0.23°C (He and Lidstrom, 2024); hence, new technologies are needed to reduce atmospheric methane levels. In Nature, methane is captured aerobically by methanotrophs and anaerobically by anaerobic methanotrophic archaea; however, the anaerobic process dominates. Here, we describe the history and potential of using the two remarkable enzymes that have been cloned with activity for capturing methane: aerobic capture via soluble methane monooxygenase and anaerobic capture via methyl-coenzyme M reductase. We suggest these two enzymes may play a prominent, sustainable role in addressing our current global warming crisis.

RESUMO

Historically, neonatal neuroscience boasted a robust and successful preclinical pipeline for therapeutic interventions, in particular for the treatment of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). However, since the successful translation of therapeutic hypothermia (TH), several high-profile failures of promising adjunctive therapies, in addition to the lack of benefit of TH in lower resource settings, have brought to light critical issues in that same pipeline. Using recent data from clinical trials of erythropoietin as an example, the authors highlight several key challenges facing preclinical neonatal neuroscience for HIE therapeutic development and propose key areas where model development and collaboration across the field in general can ensure ongoing success in treatment development for HIE worldwide.

INTRODUCTION: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) after total joint arthroplasty (TJA) is a serious complication posing notable clinical implications for patients and substantial economic burdens. Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is an emerging biomarker of inflammation, which may better predict PJI. The objective of this review was to evaluate NLR changes in patients with confirmed PJI, to compare NLR between an aseptic revision and a revision for PJI, and to establish whether an NLR of 2.45 is an appropriate cutoff for predicting infection. METHODS: A retrospective review of patients who underwent revision TJA for PJI at a single center between January 1, 2005, and December 31, 2018, was performed and compared with an aseptic cohort who underwent aseptic revision TJA. NLR was calculated from complete blood counts performed at index surgery and at the time of revision surgery. Receiver operating characteristic curves were analyzed, along with sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative likelihood ratios. RESULTS: There were 89 patients included in each cohort. Mean NLR in patients who underwent revision for PJI was 2.85 (± 1.27) at the time of index surgery and 6.89 (± 6.64) at the time of revision surgery ( P = 0.017). Mean NLR in patients undergoing revision for PJI (6.89) was significantly higher than aseptic revisions (3.17; P < 0.001). DISCUSSION: In patients who underwent revision surgery for PJI, NLR was markedly elevated at time of revision compared with the time of index surgery. Because it is a cost-effective and readily available test, these findings suggest that NLR may be a useful triage test in the diagnosis of PJI. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level III Diagnostic Study.

The fastidiosissimus species-group of Stenodynerus de Saussure, 1863 is revised in Western Europe and North Africa, combining morphological data and DNA barcoding. Six species are recognized: S. difficilis (Morawitz, 1867) stat. resurr. (= S. fastidiosissimus auct.), S. fastidiosissimus (de Saussure, 1855), S. laborans (Costa, 1882) stat. resurr., S. montanus Selis, sp. nov., S. muelleri (Dusmet, 1917) (= Stenodynerus gusenleitneri Giordani Soika, 1986 syn. nov.), and S. rufescens Giordani Soika, 1977 stat. nov. Lectotypes are designated for Odynerus fastidiosissimus de Saussure, 1855 and Odynerus insularis Andr, 1883 non Smith, 1859. A key for the identification of members of this species-group is provided. DNA barcodes are published for every species, representing the first available sequences for the fastidiosissimus species-group.

RESUMO

Phage therapy holds much promise as an alternative to antibiotics for fighting infection. However, this approach is no panacea as recent results show that a small fraction of cells survives lytic phage infection due to both dormancy (i.e. formation of persister cells) and resistance (genetic change). In this brief review, we summarize evidence suggesting phages induce the persister state. Therefore, it is predicted that phage cocktails should be combined with antipersister compounds to eradicate bacterial infections.

Robot-assisted surgery (RAS) in gynaecology has undergone exponential growth in recent decades, with utility in treating both benign and malignant gynaecological conditions. The technological complexities and amended theatre dynamics that RAS demands mean that effective non-technical skills (NTS) are vitally important to overcome these unique challenges. However, NTS have been neglected in RAS-training programmes with focus placed instead on the exclusive acquisition of technical skills (TS). NTS include teamwork, communication, leadership, situational awareness, decision-making and stress management. Communication is the most frequently cited NTS impacted during RAS, as the physical limitations imposed by the robotic hardware make communication exchange difficult. The full immersion that RAS enables can contribute to situational awareness deficits. However, RAS can complement communication and teamwork when multidisciplinary (MDT) surgeries (such as complex endometriosis excisions) are undertaken; dual-console capabilities facilitate the involvement of specialties such as general surgery and urology. The development of NTS in RAS cannot be achieved with in-situ experience alone, and current training is poorly standardised. RAS-training programmes and curricula for gynaecology do exist, however the integration of NTS remain limited. Simulation is a viable tool to facilitate enhanced-NTS integration, yet cost implications form a barrier to its wider implementation. However, given that RAS will continue to occupy a greater proportion of the gynaecological caseload, integration of NTS within gynaecological RAS training curricula is necessary. Patients undergoing gynaecological RAS would benefit from the improved safety standards and enhanced surgical outcomes that would result.

Fuzzy-trace theory (FTT) posits that people share misinformation online if it promotes gist mental representations, cuing motivationally relevant values. Most people value the truth. Thus, per FTT, people decide to share messages that they perceive as true. FTT also predicts that messages will be more effective if they communicate a simple gist. We test these predictions by examining the roles of mental representation and epistemic quality in decisions to share misinformative articles on Facebook across two experiments and two correlational studies. In Studies 1 and 2, we use Facebook data to test the hypothesis that gist proxies in text are associated with online sharing. In Study 3, we experimentally manipulate subjects' exposure to a gist-based intervention that explains why a misinformative article is false, a simple debunk stating only that the article is false (but not explaining why) and a verbatim condition providing relevant detailed information but allowing subjects to draw their own conclusions. We found that the gist condition decreased intentions to share misinformation. Finally, in Study 4, we replicated this finding and showed that the gist condition also reduces misinformation endorsement. Dementia, particularly Alzheimer's Disease (AD), has links to several modifiable risk factors, especially physical inactivity. When considering the relationship between physcial activity and dementia risk, cognitive benefits are generally attributed to aerobic exercise, with resistance exercise (RE) receiving less attention. This review aims to address this gap by evaluating the impact of RE on brain structures and cognitive deficits associated with AD. Drawing insights from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) utilizing structural neuroimaging, the specific influence of RE on AD-affected brain structures and their correlation with cognitive function are discussed. Preliminary findings suggest that RE induces structural brain changes in older adults that could reduce the risk of AD or mitigate AD progression. Importantly, the impacts of RE appear to follow a dose-response effect, reversing pathological structural changes and improving associated cognitive functions if performed at least twice per week for at least six months, with greatest effects in those already experiencing some element of cognitive decline. While more research is eagerly awaited, this review contributes insights into the potential benefits of RE for cognitive health in the context of AD-related changes in brain structure and function.

OBJECTIVES: To analyse development of individual nontechnical skills (NTS) domains after undertaking a previously developed simulation-based training model and analyse the relationship between technical skills (TS) and NTS in ophthalmic surgery. METHODS: The simulation-based training model involved a cataract surgery case complicated by intraoperative posterior capsule rupture. Cataract surgeons underwent the simulation twice, separated by a training intervention. Two blinded independent experts assessed participants' NTS using HUFOES, NOn-Technical Skills for Surgeons (NOTSS), and the OSATS global rating scale for TS. Paired t-tests assessed differences in individual NTS domains, with p < 0.05 indicating significance. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was used to assess the correlation between scores from each scoring system. RESULTS: All NTS domains within HUFOES and NOTSS demonstrated statistically significant improvements secondary to the training intervention. Positive correlations were demonstrated between HUFOES and OSATS scores in the pre- and post-training simulations, r = 0.870 (p < 0.001) and r = 0.861 (p < 0.001), respectively. Positive correlations were also demonstrated between NOTSS and OSATS scores in pre- and post-training simulations, r = 0.849 (p < 0.001) and r = 0.757 (p = 0.001), respectively. Positive correlations were demonstrated between HUFOES and NOTSS scores; r = 0.979 (p < 0.001) (n = 17) and r = 0.959 (p < 0.001) for pre- and post-training simulations, respectively. CONCLUSION: All NTS domains contained within HUFOES and NOTSS demonstrated significant increases following the completion of the simulation-based training model. Positive correlations exist between an ophthalmic surgeon's TS and NTS. This is the first study to report these findings within ophthalmic surgery.

Iraq is a large country in the Middle East region that borders both Turkey and Iran, countries known to host two of the largest bee faunas globally, as expected for a group of insects that favour dry to Mediterranean climates. Despite this huge regional species richness, the bee fauna of Iraq is chronically understudied and poorly known, both in relative and absolute terms. This is true for the hyper-speciose bee genus Andrena, for which only 17 species have been previously published for Iraq. This work is the first modern contribution to the revision of the Andrena fauna of Iraq. Based on new specimen collections in Duhok Governorate (Iraqi Kurdistan) during 2023, a revised total of 59 Andrena species for Iraq (42 species recorded for the first time) is presented, including the description of two new species: Andrena (Aciandrena) duhokensis Wood, sp. nov. and Andrena (Notandrena) baiocchii Wood, sp. nov. The unknown males of A. (Micrandrena) elam Wood, 2022, A. (Micrandrena) obsidiana Wood, 2022, and A. (Notandrena) ayna Wood, 2023 are described. Andrenabakrajoensis Amin & Mawlood, 2019, syn. nov. is synonymised with A. (Holandrena) variabilis Smith, 1853. Additional records are presented from nearby Middle Eastern countries, particularly Lebanon. These results highlight the fundamentally understudied nature of the Iraqi Andrena fauna.

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) constitute a significant public health issue and a major source of disability and death in the United States and worldwide. TBIs are strongly associated with high morbidity and mortality rates, resulting in a host of negative health outcomes and long-term complications and placing a heavy financial burden on healthcare systems. One promising avenue for the prevention and treatment of brain injuries is the design of TBI-specific supplementation and dietary protocols centred around nutraceuticals and biochemical compounds whose mechanisms of action have been shown to interfere with, and potentially alleviate, some of the neurophysiological processes triggered by TBI. For example, evidence suggests that creatine monohydrate and omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA) help decrease inflammation, reduce neural damage and maintain adequate energy supply to the brain following injury. Similarly, melatonin supplementation may improve some of the sleep disturbances often experienced post-TBI. The scope of this narrative review is to summarise the available literature on the neuroprotective effects of selected nutrients in the context of TBI-related outcomes and provide an evidence-based overview of supplementation and dietary protocols that may be considered in individuals affected by-or at high risk for-concussion and more severe head traumas. Prophylactic and/or therapeutic compounds under investigation include creatine monohydrate, omega-3 fatty acids, BCAAs, riboflavin, choline, magnesium, berry anthocyanins, Boswellia serrata, enzogenol, N-Acetylcysteine and melatonin. Results from this analysis are also placed in the context of assessing and addressing important health-related and physiological parameters in the peri-impact period such as premorbid nutrient and metabolic health status, blood glucose regulation and thermoregulation following injury, caffeine consumption and sleep behaviours. As clinical evidence in this research field is rapidly emerging, a comprehensive approach including appropriate nutritional interventions has the potential to mitigate some of the physical, neurological, and emotional damage inflicted by TBIs, promote timely and effective recovery, and inform policymakers in the development of prevention strategies.

Importance: Infants born extremely preterm receive transfusions at higher platelet count thresholds than older children and adults due to concerns for intracranial hemorrhage. A recent randomized trial comparing 2 platelet transfusion thresholds showed the higher threshold was associated with increased risk of long-term adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. Objective: To evaluate the association of platelet transfusion exposure with death and severe neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI) at 2 years' corrected age in a cohort of infants born extremely preterm. Design, Setting, and Participants: An observational cohort study and secondary analysis of the Preterm Erythropoietin Neuroprotection Trial, a randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial of erythropoietin neuroprotection in neonates born extremely preterm, was conducted in 30 neonatal intensive care units in the US from December 1, 2013, to September 31, 2016. This analysis included 819 infants born extremely preterm at 24 to 27 completed weeks of gestation who had a documented outcome (death or neurodevelopmental assessment). Analysis was performed in April 2023. Exposures: Any platelet transfusion during neonatal intensive care unit hospitalization. Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary composite outcome was death or severe NDI evaluated at 2 years' corrected age using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development-Third Edition (BSID-III) and the Gross Motor Function Classification System and was defined as the presence of severe cerebral palsy or a BSID-III composite motor or cognitive score 2 SDs below the mean. Confounding by indication for platelet transfusion was addressed with covariate adjustment and propensity score methods. Results: Of the 819 infants included in the analysis (429 [52.4%] male; mean [SD] gestational age, 25.5 [1.1] weeks), 245 (30.0%) received at least 1 platelet transfusion during their initial hospitalization. The primary outcome occurred in 46.5% (114 of 245) of infants exposed to a platelet transfusion and 13.9% (80 of 574) of nonexposed infants with a corresponding odds ratio of 2.43 (95% CI, 1.24-4.76), adjusted for propensity score, gestational age at birth, and trial treatment group. The individual components of death and severe NDI were directionally consistent with the overall composite outcome. Conclusions and Relevance: The findings of this study suggest that platelet transfusion in infants born extremely preterm may be associated with an increased risk of death or severe NDI at 2 years' corrected age, although the possibility of residual confounding by indication cannot be excluded.

Introduction: Chocolate spot, caused by the ascomycete fungus Botrytis fabae, is a devastating foliar disease and a major constraint on the quality and yield of faba beans (Vicia faba). The use of fungicides is the primary strategy for controlling the disease. However, high levels of partial genetic resistance have been identified and can be exploited to mitigate the disease. Methods: The partially resistant V. faba cultivar Maris Bead and susceptible Egyptian accession ig70726 were crossed, and a genetic mapping population of 184 individuals was genotyped in the F2 generation and screened for resistance to B. fabae infection in the F3, F5, and F6 generations in a series of field experiments. A high-density linkage map of V. faba containing 3897 DArT markers spanning 1713.7 cM was constructed. Results: Multiple candidate quantitative trait loci (QTLs) in 11 separate regions of the V. faba genome were identified; some on chromosomes 2, 3, and 6 overlapped with loci previously linked to resistance to Ascochyta leaf and pod blight caused by the necrotrophic fungus Ascochyta fabae. A transcriptomics experiment was conducted at 18 h post-inoculation in seedlings of both parents of the mapping population, identifying several differentially expressed transcripts potentially involved in early stage defence against B. fabae, including cell-wall associated protein kinases, NLR genes, and genes involved in metabolism and response to reactive oxygen species. Discussion: This study identified several novel candidate QTLs in the V. faba genome that contribute to partial resistance to chocolate spot, but differences between growing seasons highlighted the importance of multi-year phenotyping experiments when searching for candidate QTLs for partial resistance.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are a promising alternative to antibiotics in the fight against multi-drug resistant and immune system-evading bacterial infections. Protegrins are porcine cathelicidins which have been identified in porcine leukocytes. Protegrin-1 is the best characterized family member and has broad antibacterial activity by interacting and permeabilizing bacterial membranes. Many host defense peptides (HDPs) like LL-37 or chicken cathelicidin 2 (CATH-2) have also been shown to have protective biological functions during infections. In this regard, it is interesting to study if Protegrin-1 has the immune modulating potential to suppress unnecessary immune activation by neutralizing endotoxins or by influencing the macrophage functionality in addition to its direct antimicrobial properties. This study showed that Protegrin-1 neutralized lipopolysaccharide- (LPS) and bacteria-induced activation of RAW macrophages by binding and preventing LPS from cell surface attachment. Furthermore, the peptide treatment not only inhibited bacterial phagocytosis by murine and porcine macrophages but also interfered with cell surface and intracellular bacterial survival. Lastly, Protegrin-1 pre-treatment was shown to inhibit the amastigote survival in Leishmania infected macrophages. These experiments describe an extended potential of Protegrin-1's protective role during microbial infections and add to the research towards clinical application of cationic AMPs.

Although toxin/antitoxin (TA) systems are ubiquitous, beyond phage inhibition and mobile element stabilization, their role in host metabolism is obscure. One of the best-characterized TA systems is MqsR/MqsA of Escherichia coli, which has been linked previously to protecting gastrointestinal species during the stress it encounters from the bile salt deoxycholate as it colonizes humans. However, some recent whole-population studies have challenged the role of toxins such as MqsR in bacterial physiology since the mqsRA locus is induced over a hundred-fold during stress, but a phenotype was not found upon its deletion. Here, we investigate further the role of MqsR/MqsA by utilizing single cells and demonstrate that upon oxidative stress, the TA system MqsR/MqsA has a heterogeneous effect on the transcriptome of single cells. Furthermore, we discovered that MqsR activation leads to induction of the poorly characterized yfjXY ypjJ yfjZF operon of cryptic prophage CP4-57. Moreover, deletion of yfjY makes the cells sensitive to H2O2, acid, and heat stress, and this phenotype was complemented. Hence, we recommend yfjY be renamed to lfgB (less fatality gene B). Critically, MqsA represses lfgB by binding the operon promoter, and LfgB is a protease that degrades MqsA to derepress rpoS and facilitate the stress response. Therefore, the MqsR/MqsA TA system facilitates the stress response through cryptic phage protease LfgB.IMPORTANCEThe roles of toxin/antitoxin systems in cell physiology are few and include phage inhibition and stabilization of genetic elements; yet, to date, there are no single-transcriptome studies for toxin/antitoxin systems and few insights for prokaryotes from this novel technique. Therefore, our results with this technique are important since we discover and characterize a cryptic prophage protease that is regulated by the MqsR/MqsA toxin/antitoxin system in order to regulate the host response to oxidative stress.
