RESUMO

Scutellaria barbata is a traditional Chinese herb medicine and a major source of bioactive clerodane diterpenoids. However, barely clerodanes have been isolated from the closely related S. baicalensis. Here we assembled a chromosome-level genome of S. barbata and identified three class II clerodane diterpene synthases (SbarKPS1, SbarKPS2 and SbaiKPS1) from these two organisms. Using in vitro and in vivo assays, SbarKPS1 was characterized as a monofunctional (-)-kolavenyl diphosphate synthases ((-)-KPS), while SbarKPS2 and SbaiKPS1 produced major neo-cleroda-4(18),13E-dienyl diphosphate with small amount of (-)-KPP. SbarKPS1 and SbarKPS2 shared a high protein sequence identity and formed a tandem gene pair, indicating tandem duplication and sub-functionalization probably led to the evolution of monofunctional (-)-KPS in S. barbata. Additionally, SbarKPS1 and SbarKPS2 were primarily expressed in the leaves and flowers of S. barbata, which was consistent with the distribution of major clerodane diterpenoids scutebarbatine A and B. In contrast, SbaiKPS1 was barely expressed in any tissue of S. baicalensis. We further explored the downstream class I diTPS by functional characterizing of SbarKSL3 and SbarKSL4. Unfortunately, no dephosphorylated product was detected in the coupled assays with SbarKSL3/KSL4 and four class II diTPSs (SbarKPS1, SbarKPS2, SbarCPS2 and SbarCPS4) when a phosphatase inhibitor cocktail was included. Co-expression of SbarKSL3/KSL4 with class II diTPSs in yeast cells did not increase the yield of the corresponding dephosphorylated products, either. Together, these findings elucidated the involvement of two class II diTPSs in clerodane biosynthesis in S. barbata, while the class I diTPS is likely not responsible for the subsequent dephosphorylation step.

RESUMO

Cylindrical vector beams (CVBs) exhibit great potential for multiplexing communication, owing to their mode orthogonality and compatibility with conventional wavelength multiplexing techniques. However, the practical application of CVB multiplexing communication faces challenges due to the lack of effective spatial polarization manipulation technologies for (de)multiplexing multi-dimensional physical dimensions of CVBs. Herein, we introduce a wavelength- and polarization-sensitive cascaded phase modulation strategy that utilizes multiple coaxial metasurfaces for multi-dimensional modulation of CVBs. By leveraging the spin-dependent phase modulation mechanism, these metasurfaces enable the independent transformation of the two orthogonal polarization components of CVB modes. Combined with the wavelength sensitivity of Fresnel diffraction in progressive phase modulation, this approach establishes a high-dimensional mapping relationship among CVB modes, wavelengths, spatial positions, and Gaussian fundamental modes, thereby facilitating multi-dimensional (de)multiplexing involving CVB modes and wavelengths. As a proof of concept, we theoretically demonstrate a 9-channel multi-dimensional multiplexing system, successfully achieving joint (de)multiplexing of 3 CVB modes (1, 2, and 3) and 3 wavelengths (1550 nm, 1560 nm, and 1570 nm) with a diffraction efficiency exceeding 80%. Additionally, we show the transmission of 16-QAM signals across 9 channels with the bit-error-rates below 10-5. By combining the integrability of metasurfaces with the high-dimensional wavefront manipulation capabilities of multilevel modulation, our strategy can effectively address the diverse demands of different wavelengths and CVB modes in optical communication.

RESUMO

Cylindrical vector beam (CVB) multiplexing communication demands effective mode cross-connection techniques to establish communication networks. While methods like polarized grating and coordinate transformation have been developed for (de)multiplexing CVB modes, challenges persist in the cross-connection of these multiplexed mode channels, including multi-mode conversion and inhomogeneous polarization control. Herein, we present an independent off-axis spin-orbit interaction strategy utilizing spin-decoupled metasurfaces. Cross-connection is achieved by encoding conjugated Dammann optical vortex grating phases onto the two orthogonal circularly polarized components of CVBs. Experimental results demonstrate the successful interconversion of four CVB modes (CVB+1 and CVB-2, CVB+2 and CVB-4) using a Si-based metasurface with a polarization conversion efficiency exceeding 85%. This facilitates the cross-connection of 200 Gbit/s quadrature phase-shift keying signals with bit-error-rates below 10-6. Offering advantages such as ultra-compact device size, flexible control of CVB modes, and multi-mode parallel processing, this approach shows promise in advancing the networking capabilities of CVB mode multiplexing communication networks.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Mammals are potential hosts for many infectious diseases. However, studies on the viral communities of herbivorous mammals in the Northwest Plateau are limited. Here, we studied the viral communities of herbivorous mammals in the Northwest Plateau using virus metagenomic analysis to analyze and compare the viral community composition of seven animal species. RESULTS: By library construction and next-generation sequencing, contigs and singlets reads with similar viral sequences were classified into 24 viral families. Analyzed from the perspective of sampling areas, the virus community composition was relatively similar in two areas of Wuwei and Jinchang, Gansu Province. Analyzed from the perspective of seven animal species, the viral reads of seven animal species were mostly ssDNA and dominated by CRESS-DNA viruses. Phylogenetic analysis based on viral marker genes indicated that CRESS-DNA viruses and microviruses have high genetic diversity. In addition to DNA viruses, nodaviruses, pepper mild mottle viruses and picornaviruses were RNA viruses that we performed by phylogenetic analysis. The CRESS-DNA viruses and nodaviruses are believed to infect plants and insects, and microviruses can infect bacteria, identifying that they were likely from the diet of herbivorous mammals. Notably, two picornaviruses were identified from red deer and wild horse, showing that the picornavirus found in red deer had the relatively high similarity with human hepatitis A virus, and the picornavirus carried by wild horse could potentially form a new species within the Picornaviridae family. CONCLUSIONS: This study explored the herbivorous mammalian virus community in the Northwest Plateau and the genetic characteristics of viruses that potentially threaten human health. It reveals the diversity and stability of herbivorous mammalian virus communities in the Northwest Plateau and helps to expand our knowledge of various herbivorous mammalian potentially pathogenic viruses.

RESUMO

MAIN CONCLUSION: We identify two ferruginol synthases and a 11-hydroxyferruginol synthase from a traditional Chinese medicinal herb Isodon lophanthoides and propose their involvement in two independent abietane diterpenoids biosynthetic pathways. Isodon lophanthoides is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb rich in highly oxidized abietane-type diterpenoids. These compounds exhibit a wide range of pharmaceutical activities, yet the biosynthesis is barely known. Here, we describe the screening and functional characterization of P450s that oxidize the abietane skeleton abietatriene. We mainly focused on CYP76 family and identified 12 CYP76AHs by mining the RNA-seq data of I. lophanthoides. Among the 12 CYP76AHs, 6 exhibited similar transcriptional expression features as upstream diterpene synthases, including root or leaf-preferential expression pattern and highly MeJA inducibility. These six P450s were considered as first-tier candidates and functionally characterized in yeast and plant cells. In yeast assays showed that both CYP76AH42 and CYP76AH43 were ferruginol synthases hydroxylating the C12 position of abietatriene, whereas CYP76AH46 was characterized as a 11-hydroxyferruginol synthase which catalyzes two successive oxidations at C12 and C11 of abietatriene. Heterologous expression of three CYP76AHs in Nicotiana benthamiana resulted in the formation of ferruginol. qPCR analysis showed CYP76AH42 and CYP76AH43 were mainly expressed in the root, which was consistent with the distribution of ferruginol in the root periderms. CYP76AH46 was primarily expressed in the leaves where barely ferruginol or 11-hydroxyferruginol was detected. In addition to distinct organ-specific expression pattern, three CYP76AHs exhibited different genomic structures (w or w/o introns), low protein sequence identities (51-63%) and were placed in separate subclades in the phylogenetic tree. These results suggest that the identified CYP76AHs may be involved in at least two independent abietane biosynthetic pathways in the aerial and underground parts of I. lophanthoides.

RESUMO

Cylindrical vector beam (CVB) has recently gained attention as a promising carrier for signal multiplexing owing to its mode orthogonality. However, the full-duplex multiplexing communication has not been previously explored for the lack of effective technologies to parallelly couple and separate CVB modes. Herein, we present a full-duplex solution for CVB multiplexing communication that utilizes spin-dependent phase modulation metasurfaces. By independently phase-modulating the two spin eigenstates of CVBs with the metasurface via spin-dependent orbital interactions, and loading two binary Dammann vortex gratings, we enabled an independent and reciprocal wave vector manipulation of CVBs for full-duplex (de)multiplexing operation. To demonstrate this concept, we constructed a 16-channel (including 4 CVB modes and 4 wavelengths) full-duplex CVB multiplexing communication system and achieved the bidirectional transmission of 800 Gbit/s quadrature-phase shift-keying (QPSK) signals over a 5 km few-mode fiber. Our results demonstrate the successful multiplexing and demultiplexing of 2 radial CVB modes and 2 azimuthal CVB modes in full-duplex communication with the bit-error-rates approaching 1.87 × 10-5.

RESUMO

As a common vector-borne disease, dengue fever remains challenging to predict due to large variations in epidemic size across seasons driven by a number of factors including population susceptibility, mosquito density, meteorological conditions, geographical factors, and human mobility. An ensemble forecast system for dengue fever is first proposed that addresses the difficulty of predicting outbreaks with drastically different scales. The ensemble forecast system based on a susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) type of compartmental model coupled with a data assimilation method called the ensemble adjusted Kalman filter (EAKF) is constructed to generate real-time forecasts of dengue fever spread dynamics. The model was informed by meteorological and mosquito density information to depict the transmission of dengue virus among human and mosquito populations, and generate predictions. To account for the dramatic variations of outbreak size in different seasons, the effective population size parameter that is sequentially updated to adjust the predicted outbreak scale is introduced into the model. Before optimizing the transmission model, we update the effective population size using the most recent observations and historical records so that the predicted outbreak size is dynamically adjusted. In the retrospective forecast of dengue outbreaks in Guangzhou, China during the 2011-2017 seasons, the proposed forecast model generates accurate projections of peak timing, peak intensity, and total incidence, outperforming a generalized additive model approach. The ensemble forecast system can be operated in real-time and inform control planning to reduce the burden of dengue fever.

RESUMO

HmsB, a temperature-dependent sRNA, promotes biofilm formation by Yersinia pestis, but whether its own expression is regulated by other regulators is still poorly understood. RovM is a global regulator that activates biofilm formation but represses the virulence of Y. pestis. In this work, the results of primer extension, quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), and LacZ fusion demonstrated that RovM was able to activate hmsB expression. However, the results of electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) showed that His-RovM did not bind to the upstream DNA region of hmsB. Thus, RovM may exert its regulatory action on hmsB expression in an indirect manner. The data presented here enriched the content of the regulatory circuits that control gene expression in Y. pestis.

RESUMO

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode multiplexing provides a new strategy for reconstructing multiple holograms, which is compatible with other physical dimensions involving wavelength and polarization to enlarge information capacity. Conventional OAM multiplexing holography usually relies on the independence of physical dimensions, and the deep holography involving spatial depth is always limited for the lack of spatiotemporal evolution modulation technologies. Herein, we introduce a depth-controllable imaging technology in OAM deep multiplexing holography via designing a prototype of five-layer optical diffractive neural network (ODNN). Since the optical propagation with dimensional-independent spatiotemporal evolution offers a unique linear modulation to light, it is possible to combine OAM modes with spatial depths to realize OAM deep multiplexing holography. Exploiting the multi-plane light conversion and in-situ optical propagation principles, we simultaneously modulate both the OAM mode and spatial depth of incident light via unitary transformation and linear modulations, where OAM modes are encoded independently for conversions among holograms. Results show that the ODNN realized light field conversion and evolution of five multiplexed OAM modes in deep multiplexing holography, where the mean square error and structural similarity index measure are 0.03 and 86%, respectively. Our demonstration explores a depth-controllable spatiotemporal evolution technology in OAM deep multiplexing holography, which is expected to promote the development of OAM mode-based optical holography and storage.

RESUMO

Here we propose a polarization-dependent gradient phase modulation strategy and fabricate a local polarization-matched metasurface to add/drop polarization multiplexed cylindrical vector beams (CVBs). The two orthogonal linear polarization states in CVB multiplexing will represent as radial- and azimuthal-polarized CVBs, which means that we must introduce independent wave vectors to them for adding/dropping the polarization channels. By designing the rotation angle and geometric sizes of a meta-atom, a local polarization-matched propagation phase plasmonic metasurface is constructed, and the polarization-dependent gradient phases were loaded to perform this operation. As a proof of concept, the polarization multiplexed CVBs, carrying 150-Gbit/s quadrature phase shift keying signals, are successfully added and dropped, and the bit error rates approach 1 × 10-6. In addition to representing a route for adding/dropping polarization multiplexed CVBs, other functional phase modulation of arbitrary orthogonal linear polarization bases is expected, which might find potential applications in polarization encryption imaging, spatial polarization shaping, etc.

RESUMO

Microplastic pollution is an emerging environmental problem, and little research has focused on its impact on the human body. Based on retrospective case series, the study required participants to fill out a questionnaire and provide sputum samples in order to investigate the presence of microplastics in human sputum and determine whether humans involuntarily inhale them. A total of 22 patients suffering from different respiratory diseases were recruited. We used an Agilent 8700 laser infrared imaging spectrometer and Fourier-transform infrared microscope to analyze sputum samples and evaluate microplastics in the respiratory tract. Remarkably, the size range of the method for detecting microplastics in our study is 20-500 µm. The results showed that 21 types of microplastics were identified, and polyurethane was dominant, followed by polyester, chlorinated polyethylene, and alkyd varnish, accounting for 78.36% of the total microplastics. Most of the aspirated microplastics detected are smaller than 500 µm in size (median: 75.43 µm; interquartile range: 44.67-210.64 µm). Microplastics are ubiquitous in all sputum, indicating that inhalation is a potential way for plastics to enter the human body. Additionally, the quantities of microplastic types in the respiratory tract are related to smoking, invasive examination, etc. (P < 0.05). This study sheds new light on microplastic exposure, which provides basic data for the risk assessment of microplastics to human health.

RESUMO

Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a cylindrical vector beam (CVB) sorter based on a spin-dependent spiral transformation. By exploiting the spin-orbital interaction of the geometric phase, a pair of conjugated spiral transformations are applied to modulate the two orthogonal circularly polarized components of the CVB, which are converted into the same linear phase gradient from opposite azimuthal phase gradients. Since the orthogonal spin components of CVBs with different polarization orders carry different phase gradients, under the convergence of a convex lens, the coaxially transmitted CVBs can be sorted with spatially separated positions, and the increased phase gradient provided by the spiral transformation yields the high resolution. We show that five CVB modes from -2 to +2 are successfully sorted with a separation efficiency of 3.65. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate a two-channel CVB multiplexing communication with a bit error rate approaching 10-6. In addition to providing an avenue for CVB demultiplexing, our results show potential applications in mode filtering and mode routing in all-optical interconnection.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Although some studies have investigated the bacterial community in vaginal tract of pregnant women, there are few reports about the viral community (virome) in this type of microenvironment. METHODS: To investigate the composition of virome in vaginal secretion samples, 40 vaginal secretion samples from pregnant women with vaginitis and 20 vaginal secretion samples from pregnant women without vaginitis, pooled into 4 and 2 sample pools, respectively, were subjected to viral metagenomic analysis. RESULTS: Results indicated virus sequences showing similarity to human papillomavirus (HPV), anellovirus, and norovirus were recovered from this cohort of pregnant women. Further analysis indicated that 15 different defined types and one unclassified type of HPV were detected from pregnant women with vaginitis while only 3 defined types of HPV were detected in pregnant women without vaginitis. Five different groups of viruses from the family Anelloviridae were present in pregnant women with but none of them were detected in pregnant women without vaginitis. Norovirus was detected in 3 out of the 4 sample pools from pregnant women with vaginitis but none in the pregnant women without vaginitis. Twelve complete genomes belonging to 10 different types of HPV, and 5 novel anllovirus genomes belonging 2 different genera in Anelloviridae were acquired from these libraries, based on which phylogenetical analysis and pairwise sequence comparison were performed. Phageome in these samples was also briefly characterized and compared between two groups. CONCLUSION: Our data suggested that virome might play an important role in the progression of vaginitis in pregnant women.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Abnormal semen quality is one of the common causes of infertility. The relationship between exposure to air pollutants and semen quality is unclear. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of ambient air pollutant exposures on semen quality. METHODS: We analyzed 3797 semen samples from Guangdong Human Sperm Bank between May 28, 2018 and March 31, 2019. The inverse distance weighted interpolation method was used to estimate the personal exposures to CO, SO2, NO2, O3, PM10 and PM2.5 during the entire period (0-90 lag days) and key periods (0-9, 10-14, 70-90 lag days) of sperm development. Linear mixed models were used to evaluate the exposure-response relationships between air pollutants and semen quality, including sperm concentration, sperm count and sperm motility, after adjusting for other covariates. The regression coefficients and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) associated with each interquartile range (IQR) increase in pollutant concentrations were estimated for each semen quality parameter. RESULTS: Overall, we observed a significant association of decreased sperm count with the exposure to PM10 (-0.2466; -0.4443, -0.0489) and PM2.5 (-0.2910; -0.5401, -0.0419). Among the sperm quality parameters assessed, sperm count was observed more frequently to be negatively associated with ambient air pollutants (CO, NO2, O3, PM10 and PM2.5), especially for the period during 10-14 lag days. In addition, motility decline was significantly associated with O3 in the late stage of sperm development. Sensitivity analyses for subgroup population yielded similar results. No significant association was found between all pollutants and sperm concentration (all P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that ambient air pollutants exposures during sperm development may have an adverse effect on semen quality, especially for sperm count and motility. The findings emphasize the potential to improve semen quality by reducing ambient air pollutant exposures, and the importance of taking into account the critical period of sperm development when protective measures are implemented.

RESUMO

To explore the effects of miR-21-3p on diabetic atherosclerosis. Using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), we also detected the levels of soluble receptor for advanced glycation endproducts RAGE (sRAGE) in the cellular supernatant of vascular endothelial cells after transfecting them with adenovirus vector having miR-21-3p mimic or inhibitor. We found decrease in the expression levels of miR-21-3p in vascular endothelial cells (VECs) induced by high-concentration glucose. We also observed that the introduction of miR-21-3p mimic significantly increased the expression of ADAM10 in the VECs. Similarly, significantly higher levels of sRAGE were found in the cultured supernatant after administration of miR-21-3p mimic in human vein endothelial cells. The production of reactive oxygen species and expression of inflammatory cytokines in VECs induced by LPS and high-concentration glucose were significantly decreased after administration of miR-21-3p. in vivo studies revealed that intravenous injection of miR-21-3p at regular intervals would reduce the area of atherosclerotic lesion and elevate the serum levels of sRAGE in atherosclerotic diabetic mice. miR-21-3p may be beneficial in diabetic atherosclerosis by promoting the cleaved form of sRAGE and inhibition of RAGE/NADPH oxidase signalling depending on the increased expression of ADAM10. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY: We identified a novel microRNA, miR-21-3p, which is characteristically at elevated levels in serum derived from diabetic patients and responsible for target degradation of ADAM10 mRNA. Further, we show that miR-21-3p aggravates the atherosclerotic lesion via dysfunction of the ectodomain shedding of molecular binding RAGE in the diabetic atherosclerotic mice.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The objectives of the study were to investigate and compare the incidence of perioperative pulmonary embolism (PE) in trauma patients with below-knee deep vein thrombosis (BKDVT) and above-knee DVT (AKDVT) who need major orthopedic surgery and evaluate the usage of inferior vena cava (IVC) filters in these cases with BKDVT. METHODS: Between January 2003 and December 2017, patients with pelvic and/or lower extremity fracture diagnosed with DVT by duplex ultrasound were eligible for the study. A reduced-dose anticoagulation therapy was administered in patients without absolute contraindication to anticoagulation therapy during the perioperative period. Patients who did not undergo filter insertion with BKDVT were classified as the BKDVT group, and cases with thrombosis involving the popliteal or more proximal veins were classified as the AKDVT group; the incidence of PE was analyzed. Among patients with BKDVT, cases with or without filter deployment were placed in the filter group and control group, respectively, to evaluate the value of IVC filter in these patients. RESULTS: A total of 3295 patients with pelvic and/or lower extremity fracture were diagnosed as having DVT, among which, 2070 cases did not undergo filter insertion. The incidence of PE in the BKDVT group and AKDVT group was 2.08% (24/1154) and 3.17% (29/916), respectively. A total of 366 patients with BKDVT underwent filter placement and no PE occurred. The incidence of PE in the filter group was lower than the control group. In patients without filter placement, the cases received anticoagulation therapy and those who did not, the incidence of PE was 2.21% and 1.94%, respectively, and there was no difference between the two subgroups. CONCLUSIONS: There was no difference in incidence of PE between the AKDVT and BKDVT groups. Reduced-dose anticoagulation therapy does not affect the rates of PE in trauma patients with BKDVT who require ongoing orthopedics operations. For these patients, placement of the retrievable filter may be considered.

RESUMO

Hepatic echinococcosis, also called echinococcosis, is a health-threatening disease commonly found in pasture, and belongs to parasitic zoonoses. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence and the risk factors of echinococcosis in Qinghai province in order to provide fundamental data for prevention and control of echinococcosis in Qinghai province. A total of 23 445 people from 21 counties were enrolled in this study by multi-stage stratified random sampling. Echinococcosis was diagnosed by using B-mode ultrasonography and serological tests. The results showed that the prevalence of echinococcosis was 4.47% (95%CI: 4.21%-4.73%) and serum positive rate (seroprevalence) was 15.47% (95%CI: 14.92%-16.02%) in 2010. The distribution of echinococcosis differed in age, sex, ethnicity, occupation and regions in Qinghai (P<0.05). GLMM analysis revealed that gender (female vs. male), ethnicity (Tibetan vs. other ethnicities), profession (herders vs. other professions) and region (autonomous prefectures vs. cities) were significant risk factors for echinococcosis (P<0.05). It was concluded that the prevalence of echinococcosis in 2010 was about 4% in Qinghai province, and the distribution of echinococcosis in Qinghai was associated with age, sex, ethnicity and profession.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the application of inferior vena cava filter (IVCF) in prevention of peri-operative pulmonary embolism (PE) in lower limb bone fracture patients with deep venous thrombosis (DVT). METHODS: From January 2003 to December 2012, 2 248 cases of lower limb and pelvic fractures with DVT were retrospectively analyzed. Before the procedure of IVCF implantation began, January 2003 to December 2007, there were 1 052 cases of acute trauma patients with DVT were classified as the group of early none-IVCF. The IVCF implantation was began since January 2008. From that time to December 2012, 712 cases of bone fractures with DVT received filter implantation, which were classified as IVCF group. The other 484 patients who had not undergone filter deployment were divided as group of late none-IVCF. The baseline conditions of the three groups were significantly different in addition to the ages between group of early none-IVCF and IVCF group. The incidences of PE and mortality of PE in each group were recorded and analyzed by χ(2) test. RESULTS: There were totally 31 cases of symptomatic PE, among which 12 cases died. Totally 712 filters were deployed successfully without any major complications. The incidences of symptomatic PE were 0.14% (1/712), 2.19% (23/1 052) and 1.45% (7/484) in IVCF group, group of early none-IVCF and group of late none-IVCF, respectively. The mortality of PE were 0 (0/712), 0.86% (9/1 052) and 0.62% (3/484) in these groups. The incidence of symptomatic PE in IVCF group was significantly different from that in the group of early and late none-IVCF (χ(2) = 11.762, P = 0.001; χ(2) = 7.395, P = 0.007, respectively). The mortality of IVCF group was also significantly lower compared with the other two groups (χ(2) = 6.122, P = 0.013; χ(2) = 4.424, P = 0.035, respectively). CONCLUSION: IVCF implantation effectively prevents symptomatic and fatal PE of patients of lower limb and pelvic fractures with DVT in the peri-operative period.

RESUMO

Growing awareness acknowledges ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) as an environmental risk factor for mental disorders, especially among older people. However, there remains limited evidence regarding which specific chemical components of PM2.5 may be more detrimental. This nationwide prospective cohort study included 22,126 middle-aged and older adult participants of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS, 2011-2016), to explore the individual and joint associations between long-term exposure to various PM2.5 components (sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, organic matter, and black carbon) and depressive symptoms. The depressive symptoms were assessed using the 10-item Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D-10). Using the novel quantile-based g-computation for multi-pollutant mixture analysis, we found that exposure to the mixture of major PM2.5 components was significantly associated with aggravating depressive symptoms, with the exposure-response curve exhibiting consistent linear or supra-linear shape without a lower threshold. The estimated weight index indicated that, among major PM2.5 components, only nitrate, sulfate, and black carbon significantly contributed to the exacerbation of depressive symptoms. Given the expanding aging population, stricter regulation on the emissions of particularly toxic PM2.5 components may mitigate the escalating disease burden of depression.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: As 2 novel peripheral nerve blocks, the erector spinae plane block (ESPB) and thoracolumbar interfascial plane (TLIP) block can relieve postoperative pain in spinal surgery. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the efficacy and safety of ESPB versus TLIP block in patients undergoing spine surgery. METHODS: An extensive search of English online databases, including PubMed, Web of Sciences, Embase, Medline, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Chinese online databases like Wanfang Data, CNKI, and CQVIP until March 31, 2023, with no language restrictions, was performed. This systematic review and meta-analysis are based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement and have been registered on PROSPERO (International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews) with registered ID: CRD42023420987. RESULTS: Five studies involving 457 patients were eligible for inclusion in this study. Compared with TLIP block, ESPB had lower postoperative opioid consumption at postoperative 48 hours (standard mean difference =-1.31, 95% CI:-2.54 to -0.08, P =0.04, I2 =80%) and postoperative pain score at postoperative 24 hours (standard mean difference =-0.72, 95% CI=-1.43 to -0.02, P =0.04, I2 =95%) in patients undergoing spine surgery. Complications associated with ESPB and TLIP block were not reported in the included studies. DISCUSSION: ESPB and TLIP block are 2 novel and effective block methods. Patients receiving ESPB had lower postoperative opioid consumption and postoperative pain scores compared with patients receiving TLIP block; there was no statistically significant difference's between the 2 groups in intraoperative opioid consumption, adverse events, and rescue analgesia.
