BACKGROUND: Parental nutritional interventions have considerably affected gametogenesis and embryogenesis, leading to the differential susceptibility of offspring to chronic diseases such as cancer. Moreover, combinatorial bioactive diets are more efficacious in ameliorating epigenetic aberrations in tumorigenesis. OBJECTIVES: We sought to investigate the transgenerational influence and epigenetic regulation of paternal sulforaphane (SFN)-rich broccoli sprouts (BSp) and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG)-rich green tea polyphenols (GTPs) consumption in the prevention of estrogen receptor-negative [ER(-)] mammary cancer in transgenic mice. METHODS: Human breast cancer cells were used to detect cell viability and epigenetic-related gene expression after treatment with EGCG and/or SFN. Twenty-four C3 or HER2/neu males were randomly assigned into 4 groups and treated with control, 26% BSp (w/w) in food, 0.5% GTPs (w/v) in drinking water or combined BSp and GTPs for 7 wk before mating. Tumor growth of nontreated female pups was monitored weekly for 19 wk (C3) and 25 wk (HER2/neu). Tumor- and epigenetic-related protein expression and enzyme activities in mammary tumors were measured. Sperms were isolated from treated males for RNA sequencing and reduced-representation bisulfite sequencing analysis. Data were analyzed with a 2-factor or 3-factor analysis of variance. RESULTS: EGCG and SFN inhibited breast cancer cell growth via epigenetic regulation. Combined BSp and GTPs synergistically (combination index < 1) suppressed tumor growth over time (P < 0.001) in 2 mouse models. Key tumor-related proteins were found differentially expressed (P < 0.05) along with epigenetic regulations in offspring mammary tumors. The transcriptome profile of sperm derived from dietary-treated males revealed differentially expressed genes correlated with spermatogenesis and breast cancer progression. DNA methylomes of the sperm and further integrated analysis with transcriptomes indicate that DNA methylation alone may not contribute to sufficient regulation in dietary-treated sperm pronucleus, leading to offspring tumor suppression. CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, paternal consumption of combined BSp and GTPs shows potential for preventing ER(-) mammary cancer through transgenerational effects. J Nutr 2023;xx:xx-xx.

Breast cancer (BC) is among the most frequently diagnosed malignant cancers in women in the United States. Diet and nutrition supplementation are closely related to BC onset and progression, and inulin is commercially available as a health supplement to improve gut health. However, little is known with respect to inulin intake for BC prevention. We investigated the effect of an inulin-supplemented diet on the prevention of estrogen receptor-negative mammary carcinoma in a transgenic mouse model. Plasma short-chain fatty acids were measured, the gut microbial composition was analyzed, and the expression of proteins related to cell cycle and epigenetics-related genes was measured. Inulin supplementation greatly inhibited tumor growth and significantly delayed tumor latency. The mice that consumed inulin had a distinct microbiome and higher diversity of gut microbial composition compared to the control. The concentration of propionic acid in plasma was significantly higher in the inulin-supplemented group. The protein expression of epigenetic-modulating histone deacetylase 2 (Hdac2), Hdac8, and DNA methyltransferase 3b decreased. The protein expression of factors related to tumor cell proliferation and survival, such as Akt, phospho-PI3K, and NF-kB, also decreased with inulin administration. Furthermore, sodium propionate showed BC prevention effect in vivo through epigenetic regulations. These studies suggest that modulating microbial composition through inulin consumption may be a promising strategy for BC prevention.

BACKGROUND: Aberrations in the regulation of cell proliferation perturb cellular homeostasis and lead to malignancies in which dysregulation of the cell cycle and suppressed apoptosis are 2 common phenomena. Combinatorial nutritional approaches could be efficacious in ameliorating these aberrations. OBJECTIVES: We sought to investigate the effect of dietary broccoli sprouts (BSp) and green tea polyphenol (GTP) administration on cell cycle progression and apoptosis in mammary tumors. METHODS: Forty female HER2/neu transgenic mice were randomly divided into 4 groups and treated with control, 26% BSp (wt:wt) in food, 0.5% GTPs (wt:vol) in drinking water, or combined BSp and GTPs from dams' conception until their pups were killed at 29 wk of age. Pups' tumor growth was monitored weekly for 27 wk. Tumor cell cycle- and apoptosis-related protein expression was measured. Data were analyzed with 2-factor or 3-factor (repeated-measures) ANOVA. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, BSp and/or GTPs decreased tumor incidence (P < 0.05) and combined BSp and GTPs synergistically [combination index (CIn) < 1] reduced tumor volume over time (P-time < 0.01). BSp and/or GTPs upregulated the expression of phosphatase and tension homolog, P16, and P53 (P < 0.05) and downregulated myelocytomatosis oncogene, Bmi1 polycomb ring finger oncogene, and telomerase reverse transcriptase (P < 0.05) compared with the control group. Combined BSp and GTPs synergistically (CIn < 1) downregulated the expression of cyclin B1, D1, and E1 and cyclin-dependent kinase 1, 2, and 4 (P < 0.05) compared with the control group. Moreover, combined BSp and GTPs induced apoptosis by regulating Bcl-2-associated X protein and B-cell lymphoma 2 (P < 0.05). BSp and/or GTPs also reduced the expression of DNA methyltransferase 1, 3A, and 3B and histone deacetylase 1 compared with the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, lifelong BSp and GTP administration can prevent estrogen receptor-negative mammary tumorigenesis through cell cycle arrest and inducing apoptosis in HER2/neu mice.

Zero knowledge proof system which has received extensive attention since it was proposed is an important branch of cryptography and computational complexity theory. Thereinto, noninteractive zero knowledge proof system contains only one message sent by the prover to the verifier. It is widely used in the construction of various types of cryptographic protocols and cryptographic algorithms because of its good privacy, authentication, and lower interactive complexity. This paper reviews and analyzes the basic principles of noninteractive zero knowledge proof system, and summarizes the research progress achieved by noninteractive zero knowledge proof system on the following aspects: the definition and related models of noninteractive zero knowledge proof system, noninteractive zero knowledge proof system of NP problems, noninteractive statistical and perfect zero knowledge, the connection between noninteractive zero knowledge proof system, interactive zero knowledge proof system, and zap, and the specific applications of noninteractive zero knowledge proof system. This paper also points out the future research directions.

To address the phenomenon of many small and hard-to-detect objects in infrared and visible light images, we propose an object detection algorithm CDYL (Convolution to Fully Connect-ed-Deformable Convolution You only Look once) based on the CFC-DC (Convolution to Fully Connected-Deformable Convolution) module. The core operator of CDYL is CFC-DC, making our model not only have a large effective receptive field in infrared and visible light images, but also have adaptive spatial aggregation conditioned by input and task information. As a result, the CDYL reduces the strict inductive bias of traditional CNNs and has long-range dependence for large kernel convolution as well as adaptive spatial aggregation, deeply mining of edge and correlation information in images to enhance sensitivity to small objects, thereby improving performance in dense small object detection tasks. In order to improve the ability of the CFC-DC module to perceive the detailed information of the image, we use the Mish activation function, which has a wider minima which improves the generalization. The effectiveness as well as the generalization of CDYL is evaluated on an infrared image dataset and an UAV image dataset, and it is compared with other state-of-the-art object detection algorithms. Compared to the baseline network YOLOv8l, our model achieved a 3.0% improvement in mAP0.5 in infrared image detection tasks and a 1.1% improvement in mAP0.5 in visible light image detection tasks. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves superior average precision values on both infrared and visible light images, while maintaining a light weight. Estrogen receptor-negative [ER(-)] mammary cancer is the most aggressive type of breast cancer (BC) with higher rate of metastasis and recurrence. In recent years, dietary prevention of BC with epigenetically active phytochemicals has received increased attention due to its feasibility, effectiveness, and ease of implementation. In this regard, combinatorial phytochemical intervention enables more efficacious BC inhibition by simultaneously targeting multiple tumorigenic pathways. We, therefore, focused on investigation of the effect of sulforaphane (SFN)-rich broccoli sprouts (BSp) and withaferin A (WA)-rich Ashwagandha (Ash) combination on BC prevention in estrogen receptor-negative [ER(-)] mammary cancer using transgenic mice. Our results indicated that combinatorial BSp + Ash treatment significantly reduced tumor incidence and tumor growth (~ 75%) as well as delayed (~ 21%) tumor latency when compared to the control treatment and combinatorial BSp + Ash treatment was statistically more effective in suppressing BC compared to single BSp or Ash intervention. At the molecular level, the BSp and Ash combination upregulated tumor suppressors (p53, p57) along with apoptosis associated proteins (BAX, PUMA) and BAX:BCL-2 ratio. Furthermore, our result indicated an expressional decline of epigenetic machinery HDAC1 and DNMT3A in mammary tumor tissue because of combinatorial treatment. Interestingly, we have reported multiple synergistic interactions between BSp and Ash that have impacted both tumor phenotype and molecular expression due to combinatorial BSp and Ash treatment. Our RNA-seq analysis results also demonstrated a transcriptome-wide expressional reshuffling of genes associated with multiple cell-signaling pathways, transcription factor activity and epigenetic regulations due to combined BSp and Ash administration. In addition, we discovered an alteration of gut microbial composition change because of combinatorial treatment. Overall, combinatorial BSp and Ash supplementation can prevent ER(-) BC through enhanced tumor suppression, apoptosis induction and transcriptome-wide reshuffling of gene expression possibly influencing multiple cell signaling pathways, epigenetic regulation and reshaping gut microbiota.

The Brønsted acid-controlled switchable synthesis of indoline-fused tetrahydroquinolines and indole-fused benzazepines was developed through hydride transfer-enabled formal [5 + 1] and [5 + 2] cyclization reactions from indoles and N-alkyl o-aminobenzoketones. Indoline, furanone, and tetrahydroquinoline hybridized pentacyclic products were unprecedentedly accessed via a cascade condensation/hydride transfer/dearomatization-cyclization/deethylation/nucleophilic addition process. In addition, the undeveloped hydride transfer-involved [5 + 2] cyclizations were also realized for direct construction of indole-fused benzazepines.

Schistosoma species are the causative agent of schistosomiasis and shows worldwide distribution. There is a great need to develop a sensitive diagnostic approach for controlling the disease. Previously, we identified large numbers of Extracellular Vesicle (EV) proteins from Schistosoma japonicum (S. japonicum), but rarely these proteins have been evaluated for their diagnostic potential. In the present study, we performed bioinformatic analyses of S. japonicum identified EV-associated proteins from the previous study and then identified Schistosoma-specific proteins with potentially secreted capability. Among them, we selected SJCHGC02838 protein, SJCHGC05593 protein, SJCHGC05668 protein and a hypothetical protein (SJHYP) to evaluate their diagnostic potential for detecting S. japonicum infection. First, we determined the expression of these four proteins at the transcript levels using qRT-PCR and revealed that all these genes showed higher expression in adult stage. Then, we cloned the full-length cDNA for each protein into a prokaryotic expression vector and successfully generated the recombinant proteins. Upon the purification of recombinant proteins, we developed an indirect ELISA method to evaluate the diagnostic potential of these purified recombinant proteins. The results showed high sensitivity for detecting Schistosoma infection. Additionally, these proteins also displayed a good potential for detecting Schistosoma infection, especially SJCHGC05668 protein at an early stage. The diagnostic potentials of these recombinant proteins were further evaluated by Western blot and comparatively analyzed by our previously developed cfDNA methods.

Copper nanoparticle-based catalysts have been extensively applied in industry, but the nanoparticles tend to sinter into larger ones in the chemical atmospheres, which is detrimental to catalyst performance. In this work, we used dealuminated Beta zeolite to support copper nanoparticles (Cu/Beta-deAl) and showed that these particles become smaller in methanol vapor at 200°C, decreasing from ~5.6 to ~2.4 nanometers in diameter, which is opposite to the general sintering phenomenon. A reverse ripening process was discovered, whereby migratable copper sites activated by methanol were trapped by silanol nests and the copper species in the nests acted as new nucleation sites for the formation of small nanoparticles. This feature reversed the general sintering channel, resulting in robust catalysts for dimethyl oxalate hydrogenation performed with supported copper nanoparticles for use in industry.

Breast cancer (BC) is the most common cancer in women in the United States. There has been an increasing incidence and decreasing mortality rate of BC cases over the past several decades. Many risk factors are associated with BC, such as diet, aging, personal and family history, obesity, and some environmental factors. Recent studies have shown that healthy individuals and BC patients have different microbiota composition, indicating that microbiome is a new risk factor for BC. Gut and breast microbiota alterations are associated with BC prognosis. This review will evaluate altered microbiota populations in gut, breast tissue, and milk of BC patients, as well as mechanisms of interactions between microbiota modulation and BC. Probiotics and prebiotics are commercially available dietary supplements to alleviate side-effects of cancer therapies. They also shape the population of human gut microbiome. This review evaluates novel means of modulating microbiota by nutritional treatment with probiotics and prebiotics as emerging and promising strategies for prevention and treatment of BC. The mechanistic role of probiotic and prebiotics partially depend on alterations in estrogen metabolism, systematic immune regulation, and epigenetics regulation.

This work focused on the application value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) image segmentation algorithm based on fully convolutional DenseNet neural network (FCDNN) in glioma diagnosis. In this work, based on the fully convolutional DenseNet algorithm, a new MRI image automatic semantic segmentation method cerebral gliomas semantic segmentation network (CGSSNet) was established and was applied to glioma MRI image segmentation by using the BraTS public dataset as research data. Under the same conditions, compare the differences of dice similarity coefficient (DSC), sensitivity, and Hausdroff distance (HD) between this algorithm and other algorithms in MRI image processing. The results showed that the CGSSNet network segmentation algorithm significantly improved the segmentation accuracy of glioma MRI images. In addition, its DSC, sensitivity, and HD values for glioma MRI images were 0.937, 0.811, and 1.201, respectively. Under different iteration times, the DSC, sensitivity, and HD values of the CGSSNet network segmentation algorithm are significantly better than other algorithms. It showed that the CGSSNet model based on the DenseNet can improve the segmentation accuracy of glioma MRI images, and has potential application value in clinical practice.

Delirium is a common neurocognitive disorder prevalent in hospitalized older adults. The development of delirium is associated with adverse health outcomes, including functional decline and mortality. This study aimed to investigate the incidence and risk factors of postoperative delirium in older adults (≥60 years) who underwent orthopaedic surgery. Elderly orthopaedic patients were recruited from a large urban hospital over 12 months. Patients were preoperatively screened for delirium and followed up at least once daily postoperatively until discharge. Of the 124 patients in the sample, 21 (16.9%) had postoperative delirium. There were no significant differences in any of the baseline characteristics between the delirious and nondelirious patients. Patients using antidepressants were more likely to develop postoperative delirium compared with those not using antidepressants (odds ratio: 2.72, p = .05). Postoperative delirium was common in this sample of older adults who underwent orthopaedic surgery. Aiming prevention strategies toward patients using antidepressants may help reduce the incidence of delirium in this population.

Consumption of dietary natural components such as genistein (GE) found in soy-rich sources is strongly associated with a lower risk of breast cancer. However, bioactive dietary component-based therapeutic strategies are largely understudied in breast cancer treatment. Our investigation sought to elucidate the potential mechanisms linking bioactive dietary GE to its breast cancer chemotherapeutic potential in a special subtype of aggressive breast cancer-triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC)-by utilizing two preclinical patient-derived xenograft (PDX) orthotopic mouse models: BCM-3204 and TM00091. Our study revealed that administration of GE resulted in a delay of tumor growth in both PDX models. With transcriptomics analyses in TNBC tumors isolated from BCM-3204 PDXs, we found that dietary soybean GE significantly influenced multiple tumor-regulated gene expressions. Further validation assessment of six candidate differentially expressed genes (DEGs)-Cd74, Lpl, Ifi44, Fzd9, Sat1 and Wwc1-demonstrated a similar trend at gene transcriptional and protein levels as observed in RNA-sequencing results. Mechanistically, GE treatment-induced Cd74 downregulation regulated the NF-κB/Bcl-xL/TAp63 signal pathway, which may contribute to soybean GE-mediated therapeutic effects on TNBC tumors. Additionally, our findings revealed that GE can modify expression levels of key epigenetic-associated genes such as DNA methyltransferases (Dnmt3b), ten-eleven translocation (Tet3) methylcytosine dioxygenases and histone deacetyltransferase (Hdac2), and their enzymatic activities as well as genomic DNA methylation and histone methylation (H3K9) levels. Collectively, our investigation shows high significance for potential development of a novel therapeutic approach by using bioactive soybean GE for TNBC patients who have few treatment options.

Cruciferous vegetables have been of special interest due to the rich presence of bioactive compounds such as sulforaphane which show promising potential on cancer prevention and therapy as an epigenetic dietary strategy. Abnormal epigenetic alteration as one of the primary contributors to tumor development is closely related to breast cancer initiation and progression. In the present study, we investigated the effect of dietary broccoli sprouts (BSp), a common cruciferous vegetable, on prevention of estrogen receptor (ER)-negative mammary tumors at three different temporal exposure windows using a spontaneous breast cancer mouse model. Our findings indicate that maternal BSp treatment exhibited profound inhibitory and preventive effects on mammary cancer formation in the nontreated mouse offspring. The BSp diet administered to adult mice also showed suppressive effects on mammary cancer but was not as profound as the maternal BSp preventive effects. Moreover, such protective effects were linked with differentially expressed tumor- and epigenetic-related genes, as well as altered global histone acetylation, DNA methylation, and DNA hydroxymethylation levels. We also found that the expression changes of tumor-related genes were associated with the levels of histone methylation of H3K4 and H3K9 in the gene promoter regions. In addition, BSp-enriched sulforaphane was shown to increase protein expression of tumor suppressor genes such as p16 and p53 and inhibit the protein levels of Bmi1, DNA methyltransferases, and histone deacetylases in ERα-negative breast cancer cell lines. Collectively, these results suggest that maternal exposure to key phytochemicals may contribute to ER-negative mammary tumor prevention in their offspring through epigenetic regulations.

PURPOSE: To compare the economic burden and cost-utility analysis of the renal replacement therapies, including hemodialysis (HD), peritoneal dialysis (PD), and allograft kidney transplantation (KT) among end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients from Yunnan Province, China. METHODS: Multistage stratified random sampling method was used to select presentative sample of 298 patients from four hospitals in Yunnan Province. The two-step model was applied to calculate a direct economic burden; the human capital approach was used to analyze the indirect economic burden. SF-36 scale was applied to assess the quality of life, while the improving score of quality of life was used to evaluate the cost-utility score. RESULTS: A total of 298 patients were analyzed, including 108 HD patients, 91 PD patients and 99 KT patients. The mean unit economic expenses of HD, PD, and KT were $11,783.6 ± 402.63, $11,059.8 ± 709.51, and $21,151.1 ± 11,419.57, respectively. Based on the cost-utility analysis, the cost of improving one unit of quality of life in KT, PD, and HD was $599.86, $1373.89 and $2021.20, respectively; a significant difference was observed between the KT group and the HD or PD group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The economic burden of ESRD in Yunnan was substantial. The cost-utility was the best in the renal transplantation group. Kidney transplantation is still recommended as the first approach for patients with ESRD, followed by PD.

The objective of the study was to explore the effects of behavioral and cognitive development in rats after prenatal exposure to 1800 and 2400 MHz radiofrequency fields. Pregnant female rats were exposed to radiofrequency fields beginning on the 21st day of pregnancy. The indicators of physiological and behavioral development were observed and measured in the offspring rats: Y maze measured at 3-weeks postnatal, open field at 7-weeks postnatal, and the expression of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) measured by reverse transcription-PCR in the hippocampus at 9-weeks postnatal. The body weight of the 1800 MHz group and the 1800 MHz + WiFi group showed a downward trend. The eye opening time of newborn rats was much earlier in the WiFi group than in the control group. Compared to the control group, the overall path length of the 1800 MHz + WiFi group was shortened and the stationary time was delayed. The path length of the WiFi group was shortened and the average velocity was increased in the error arm. The 1800 MHz + WiFi group displayed an increased trend in path length, duration, entry times and stationary time in the central area. In both the 1800 MHz + WiFi and WiFi groups, NR2A and NR2B expression was down-regulated, while NR2D, NR3A and NR3B were up-regulated. Moreover, NR1 and NR2C in the WiFi group were also up-regulated. Prenatal exposure to 1800 MHz and WiFi radiofrequency may affect the behavioral and cognitive development of offspring rats, which may be associated with altered mRNA expression of NMDARs in the hippocampus.

BACKGROUND: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a population of pluripotent cells that might be used for treatment of liver disease. However, the efficacy of MSCs for mice with alcoholic hepatitis (AH) and its underlying mechanism remains unclear. METHODS: MSCs were isolated from the bone marrow (BM) of 4-6-week-old male C57BL/6 N mice. AH was induced in female mice by chronic-binge ethanol feeding for 10 days. The mice were given intraperitoneal injections of MSCs with or without transfection or AG490, recombinant mouse tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α-stimulated gene/protein 6 (rmTSG-6), or saline at day 10. Blood samples and hepatic tissues were collected at day 11. Various assays such as biochemistry, histology, and flow cytometry were performed. RESULTS: MSCs reduced AH in mice, decreasing liver/body weight ratio, liver injury, blood and hepatic lipids, malondialdehyde, interleukin (IL)-6, and TNF-ɑ, but increasing glutathione, IL-10, and TSG-6, compared to control mice. Few MSCs engrafted into the inflamed liver. Knockdown of TSG-6 in MSCs significantly attenuated their effects, and injection of rmTSG-6 achieved similar effects to MSCs. The signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) was activated in mice with AH, and MSCs and rmTSG-6 inhibited the STAT3 activation. Injection of MSCs plus AG490 obtained more alleviation of liver injury than MSCs alone. CONCLUSIONS: BM-MSCs injected into mice with AH do not engraft the liver, but they secrete TSG-6 to reduce liver injury and to inhibit STAT3 activation.

In order to improve patient care in the United States there, the government made a mandate called HIE (Health Information Exchange). This order was created from the belief that sharing digital health information between, across, and within health communities will improve one's healthcare experience across their lifespan. Patient health information, i.e. the personal health record, should be shareable between healthcare providers; such as private practice physicians, home health agencies, hospitals and nursing care facilities. Most of the U.S. hospitals now have electronic health records, however, with a lack of standards for structuring health information and unified communication protocols to share health information across providers, only a small percentage of U.S. hospitals engage in computerized HIE. In order to understand barriers and facilitators in the U.S. of HIE adoption, we reviewed the published research literature between 2010 and 2015. Our search yielded 664 articles from Medline, PsychInfo, Global health, InSpec, Scopus and Business Source Complete databases. Thirty-nine articles met our inclusion criteria. This article presents the compiled organizational and end user barriers and facilitators along with suggested methods to achieve continuity of care through HIE.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the effects of NMDA receptor subunits NR2A and NR2B expression in rat's hippocampus after exposure to 1800 MHz radiofrequency radiation. METHODS: Four-week old female Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups, with 12 animals for each. The subjects in two experimental groups had been continuously exposed to 1800 MHz microwave radiation (CW) with respective power density of 0.5 mW/cm(2) and 1.0 mW/cm(2) 12 hours each day for 21 days. Meanwhile, sham-controls were carried out. The brain tissue sections were performed by immunohistochemistry to demonstrate both expressions of NR2A, NR2B immune-activity in the hippocampal CA1, CA3 and DG by using computer-assisted image analysis system. RESULTS: In NR2A: the expression of 0.5 mW/cm(2) power density group was significantly lower than 0 mW/cm(2) power density group in CA3 [(8.5 +/- 1.5) vs (11.1 +/- 1.8), P < 0.01] and had not been significantly changed in CA1 and DG. The expression of 1.0 mW/cm(2) power density group was significantly lower than 0 mW/cm(2) power density group in CA1 and CA3 [(7.9 +/- 1.6) vs (9.7 +/- 1.5); (8.4 +/- 1.7) vs (11.1 +/- 1.8), respective P < 0.05, P < 0.01] and had not been significantly changed in DG. In NR2B: the expression of 0.5 mW/cm(2) power density group was significantly lower than 0 mW/cm(2) power density group in CA1 and CA3 [(16.4 +/- 1.0) vs (17.8 +/- 1.6); (9.6 +/- 1.9) vs (11.2 +/- 2.1), respective P < 0.05]. The expression of 1.0 mW/cm(2) power density group was significantly lower than 0 mW/cm(2) power density group in CA1, CA3 and DG [(13.1 +/- 2.4) vs (17.8 +/- 1.6); (9.3 +/- 1.4) vs (11.2 +/- 2.1); (7.3 +/- 0.1) vs (8.5 +/- 1.0), respective P < 0.01, P < 0.05, P < 0.05]. CONCLUSION: There were findings of the effects on NMDA receptor subunits in different hippocampus sections after exposure to 1800 MHz radiofrequency radiation.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to develop, implement, and evaluate the impact of early intensive care unit (ICU) nurse-led family meetings on nurse-family communication, family decision making, and satisfaction of family members. BACKGROUND: Intensive care unit nurses are in an ideal position to meet family needs, and family members may cope better with the crisis of an ICU admission if consistent honest information is provided by nurses; however, there are no early ICU family meetings led by bedside nurses. METHODS: This quality improvement project was implemented in a 10-bed neuroscience ICU over a 3-month period. A convenience sample of 23 nurses participated in the project. Following development of a communication protocol to facilitate nurse-led meetings, the nurses received education and then implemented the protocol. Thirty-one family members participated in the project. Family members were surveyed before and after the meetings. RESULTS: Mean meeting time was 26 (SD, 14) minutes. Following implementation of the meetings, findings demonstrated that families felt that communication improved (P = .02 and P = .008), they had appropriate information for decision making allowing them to feel in control (P = .002), and there was an increase in family satisfaction (P = .001). CONCLUSION: Early ICU nurse-led family meetings were feasible, improved communication between ICU nurses and family members, facilitated decision making in ICU families, and increased satisfaction of family members.
