RESUMO

Dual camera is becoming increasingly prevalent among smartphone camera schemes these days. This paper demonstrates a system prototype by using the color and monochrome cameras on one smartphone simultaneously for visible light communication. To achieve this, we propose a novel dual-modulation scheme. The baseband signal is firstly modulated by color ratio modulation-color shift keying (CRM-CSK) to broadcast color ratio information that can be distinguished by the color camera. Next to it, gray level modulation (GLM) is utilized to generate CRM symbols with gray levels that can be distinguished by the monochrome camera. Our experiment shows a significant improvement in the downlink data rate of the optical camera communication (OCC) using a single light source.

RESUMO

The homology of epidermal growth factor receptor pathway substrate 8 (EPS8), EPS8L3, is elevated significantly in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tissues and cell lines compared with the normal liver tissues and cell lines. The MTT and colony formation assays demonstrated that overexpressing EPS8L3 enhances, while silencing reduces the proliferation of HCC cells. Further experiments illustrated that overexpressing EPS8L3 promotes the expression of p-AKT, Cyclin D1, but inhibits the transcriptional activity of FOXO1. Besides, colony formation assay demonstrated that AKT inhibitor suppresses the effect of EPS8L3 on proliferation in EPS8L3-overexpressing cells, whereas AKT restores the proliferation of EPS8L3-silenced cells, suggesting that EPS8L3 might promote proliferation by hyperactivating the AKT signaling pathway and subsequently inhibiting the FOXO1 transcriptional activity. Our results provide new view between EPS8L3 and progression of human HCC, suggesting that EPS8L3 may be a novel therapeutic target for HCC.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The relationships between dietary nuts and legume intake and risk of stroke are inconsistent. We summarized the evidence by a meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies. METHODS AND RESULTS: We systematically searched the MEDLINE and EMBASE databases up to 31 January 2014. Random-effects models were used to calculate summary relative risks (SRRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Between-study heterogeneity was assessed using the Cochran's Q and I(2) statistics. Eight prospective studies with a total of 468,887 subjects and 10,493 stroke events were included in the meta-analysis. Overall, a diet containing greater amounts of legumes may be not associated with a lower risk of stroke (SRR = 0.95, 95% CI: 0.84-1.08; P(heterogeneity) = 0.091, I(2) = 43.2%); however, a diet containing greater amounts of nuts may be associated with a lower risk of stroke (SRR = 0.90, 95% CI: 0.81-0.99; P(heterogeneity) = 0.527, I(2) = 0). Gender significantly modified the effects of nut consumption on stroke risk, and high nut intake was associated with reduced risk of stroke in women (SRR = 0.85, 95% CI: 0.75-0.97) other than in men (SRR = 0.95, 95% CI: 0.82-1.11). CONCLUSION: The current meta-analysis provides some evidences for the hypothesis that high intake of dietary nut was inversely associated with stroke risk, whereas dietary legumes intake was not associated with stroke risk.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the epidemiological characteristics and diagnosis of imported malaria before and after malaria elimination in Nanjing City of Jiangsu Province, so as to provide the scientific evidence for formulating the malaria control strategy after malaria elimination. METHODS: Data pertaining to the epidemic situation and individual investigation of malaria in Nanjing City before (from 2012 to 2016) and after malaria elimination (from 2017 to 2020) were captured from the National Notifiable Communicable Disease Reporting System and the Information System for Parasitic Diseases Control and Prevention and were analyzed statistically. RESULTS: A total of 178 malaria cases were reported in Nanjing City from 2012 to 2020, and all were imported cases. There were 99 malaria cases reported before malaria elimination in Nanjing City, including 78 cases with Plasmodium falciparum malaria (78.79%), 5 cases with P. vivax malaria (5.05%), 10 cases with P. ovale malaria (10.10%), 3 cases with P. malariae malaria (3.03%) and 3 cases with mixed infections (3.03%), and 79 malaria cases reported after elimination, including 63 cases with P. falciparum malaria (79.75%), 5 cases with P. vivax malaria (6.33%), 9 cases with P. ovale malaria (11.39%), 2 cases with P. malariae malaria (2.53%). There was no significant difference in the proportion of each type of malaria cases in Nanjing City before and after malaria elimination (χ2 =2.400, P > 0.05). Malaria cases mainly acquired Plasmodium infections in African regions, and no significant difference was seen in the proportion of malaria cases returning to Nanjing City from African countries before and after malaria elimination (χ2 = 0.093, P > 0.05). The number of malaria cases peaked in Nanjing City in January and during the period from May to July before elimination, and there was no apparent seasonal variation in the distribution of malaria cases after elimination. The proportion of malaria cases living in Nanjing City was significantly greater after malaria elimination than before elimination (72.15% vs. 55.56%; χ2 = 5.187, P = 0.023). The proportions of businessmen and international students were both 5.05% before malaria elimination, and increased to 15.19% and 13.92% after elimination, respectively (χ2 = 5.229 and 4.229, both P values < 0.05). The percentage of definitive diagnosis of malaria at initial diagnosis was 18.75% in county-level hospitals before malaria elimination and increased to 61.11% after elimination (χ2 = 6.275, P = 0.012), while the proportion of malaria cases with definitive diagnoses in county-level hospitals was 4.04% before malaria elimination and increased to 13.92% after elimination (χ2 = 5.562, P = 0.018). During the period from 2012 to 2020, the proportion of malaria cases with definitive diagnoses within 1 to 3 days post-admission increased from 27.27% in Nanjing City before malaria elimination to 45.57% after elimination (χ2 = 6.433, P = 0.011). CONCLUSIONS: The epidemic situation of imported malaria remains serious in Nanjing City during the post-elimination stage, and malaria parasite infections predominantly occur in African regions. In addition, there are changes in regional and occupational distributions of malaria cases and the diagnostic capability of malaria increases in county-level hospitals in Nanjing City after malaria elimination. Further improvements in the malaria surveillance system and the diagnostic and treatment capability of malaria in medical institutions at each level are required to consolidate malaria elimination achievements in Nanjing City.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of Oncomelania snails control following the implementation of integrated schistosomiasis control measures in river channels connecting the Yangtze River in endemic areas of Nanjing City. METHODS: The river channels connecting the Yangtze River with snails in Nanjing City were selected as the study pilots. The integrated schistosomiasis control measures implemented in the study pilots were investigated by means of retrospective analyses and field surveys from 1998 to 2019, and the effectiveness of snail control was evaluated. RESULTS: Integrated control measures with emphases on environmental improvements including water resource projects for schistosomiasis control were implemented in the study pilots during the period from 1998 to 2019, including river bank concretion with 84.51 km in length, marshland cutting and dredging with 50.41 km in length, building 2 sluices and 3 overflow dams, digging one floodway and snail control with chemical treatment that covered an area of 3 370.80 hm2. No Schistosoma japonicum infection had been detected in snails since the completion of the integrated control measures. In addition, snails had been eliminated in 6 river channels connecting the Yangtze River until 2019, with the snail habitats reducing from 214.33 hm2 to 52.22 hm2 in 10 river channels connecting the Yangtze River and the snail density reducing to below 0.1 snails/0.1 m2 in snail-breeding river channels connecting the Yangtze River. CONCLUSIONS: The integrated schistosomiasis control measures with emphases on environmental improvements may effectively control snail breeding and spread in rivers connecting the Yangtze River in endemic areas of schistosomiasis; however, the maintenance of the project and snail surveillance and control should be intensified following the completion of the integrated schistosomiasis control measures.

RESUMO

In this Rapid Communication, the Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) along the density interfaces of gravity current fronts is analyzed. Both the location and the spanwise wave number of the most unstable mode determined by the local dispersion relation agree with those of the strongest perturbation obtained from numerical simulations, suggesting that the original formation mechanism of lobes and clefts at the current front is RTI. Furthermore, the predictions of the semi-infinite RTI model, i.e., the original dominating spanwise wave number of the Boussinesq current substantially depends on the Prandtl number and has a 1/3 scaling law with the Grashof number, are confirmed by the three-dimensional numerical simulations.

RESUMO

The research studied the effects of l-methionine (l-Met) on growth performance, carcass quality, feather traits, and small intestinal morphology of Pekin ducks compared with conventional dl-methionine (dl-Met). A total of 1080, 1-day-old male Pekin ducks were randomly allotted to 9 groups with 6 replicate pens of 20 birds each. During the starter phase (1 to 14 d), ducks were fed a basal diet (Met, 0.30%) or that supplemented with dl-Met or l-Met at 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, or 0.20% of feed. During the grower phase (15 to 35 d), ducks were fed a basal diet (Met, 0.24%) or that supplemented with dl-Met or l-Met at 0.04, 0.08, 0.12, or 0.16% of feed. Compared with ducks fed the basal diet, supplementation with either dl-Met or l-Met increased the body weight (BW) of ducks at days 14 and 35, increased average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI), decreased F:G at the starter phase, and increased ADG over the whole 35-d period (P < 0.05). The efficacy of l-Met compared to dl-Met was 140.1% for 14-d BW, 137.6% for ADG and 121.0% for F:G for days 1 to 14. Ducks fed diets supplemented with l-Met had greater proportion of leg muscle, higher than in ducks provided with dl-Met (P < 0.05). The breast muscle proportion was enhanced with dl-Met rather than l-Met supplementation (P < 0.01). The back feathers score and fourth primary wing feather length were increased with dl-Met or l-Met supplementation (P < 0.01), and there was increased efficacy of l-Met relative to dl-Met for back feathers score (153.1%). Dietary dl-Met or l-Met supplementation increased villus height of ileal mucosa of ducks at days 14 and 35 (P < 0.01). Overall, dietary l-Met or dl-Met supplementation affected the growth performance of ducks during the starter phase, and improved the feather traits and small intestinal morphology. The efficacy of l-Met to dl-Met ranged from 120 to 140% for growth performance of young ducks (1 to 14 d) and was 153% for the feather traits of ducks (35 d).

RESUMO

The Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) mixing induced by random interface disturbances between two incompressible viscous fluids is simulated numerically. The ensemble averaged spike velocity is found to be remarkably retarded when the random interface disturbances are superimposed with an optimized additional mode. The mode's wavenumber is selected to be large enough to avoid enhancing the dominance of long-wavelength modes, but not so large that its saturated spike and bubble velocities are too small to stimulate a growing effective density-gradient layer suppressing the long-wavelength modes. Such an optimized suppressing mode is expected to be found in the RT mixing including other diffusion processes, e.g., concentration diffusion and thermal diffusion.

RESUMO

PTEN, a tumor suppressor gene, suppresses cell survival, growth, apoptosis, cell migration and DNA damage repair by inhibiting the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. In this study, the full-length Litopenaeus vannamei PTEN (LvPTEN) cDNA was obtained, containing a 5'UTR of 59bp, an ORF of 1269bp and a 3'UTR of 146bp besides the poly (A) tail. The PTEN gene encoded a protein of 422 amino acids with an estimated molecular mass of 48.3 KDa and a predicted isoelectric point (pI) of 7.6. Subcellular localization analysis revealed that LvPTEN was distributed in both cytoplasm and nucleus, and the tissue distribution patterns showed that LvPTEN was ubiquitously expressed in all the examined tissues. Vibrio alginolyticus challenge induced upregulation of LvPTEN expression. Moreover, RNAi knock-down of LvPTEN in vivo significantly increased the expression of LvAKT mRNA, while reducing that of the downstream apoptosis genes LvP53 and LvCaspase3. LvPTEN knock-down also caused a sharp increase in cumulative mortality, bacterial numbers, and DNA damage in the hemolymph of L. vannamei following V. alginolyticus challenge, together with a sharp decrease in the total hemocyte count (THC). These results suggested that LvPTEN may participate in apoptosis via the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway in L. vannamei, and play an important role in shrimp innate immunity.

RESUMO

Objective: To further improve the quality of mortality data for Beijing residents, through describing and analyzing the current death data gathered from different sources in Beijing. Methods: Data on death of the Beijing residents from Beijing Public Security Bureau, Beijing Civil Affairs Bureau and Beijing Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (BJCDC) were collated and compared. Timeliness of related data from the three different sources were described and analyzed. The overall consistency and reported timeliness of data from the three sources appear good, but the consistency on the causes of death needs to be improved. Result: Numbers of deaths from the three different sources were 95 318, 130 906 and 160 779 respectively, with 387 003 in total. Data from the Beijing Public Security Bureau and BJCDC seemed better in terms of integrity and accuracy. Data from the Beijing Public Security Bureau had the highest filling rate of ID card number while data from the Beijing Civil Affairs Bureau had the best timeliness. The most informative source of data was from the BJCDC. Conclusion: The overall quality of the exchanged death data from Beijing Public Security Bureau, Beijing Civil Affairs Bureau and BJCDC appeared good but remained some areas for improvement.

RESUMO

Four 28-d experiments were conducted to determine the standardized ileal digestible (SID) valine (Val) to lysine (Lys) ratio required for 26- to 46- (Exp. 1), 49- to 70- (Exp. 2), 71- to 92- (Exp. 3), and 94- to 119-kg (Exp. 4) pigs fed low CP diets supplemented with crystalline AA. The first 3 experiments utilized 150 pigs (Duroc × Landrace × Large White), while Exp. 4 utilized 90 finishing pigs. Pigs in all 4 experiments were randomly allocated to 1 of 5 diets with 6 pens per treatment (3 pens of barrows and 3 pens of gilts) and 5 pigs per pen for the first 3 experiments and 3 pigs per pen for Exp. 4. Diets for all experiments were formulated to contain SID Val to Lys ratios of 0.55, 0.60, 0.65, 0.70, or 0.75. In Exp. 1 (26 to 46 kg), ADG increased (linear, = 0.039; quadratic, = 0.042) with an increasing dietary Val:Lys ratio. The SID Val:Lys ratio to maximize ADG was 0.62 using a linear broken-line model and 0.71 using a quadratic model. In Exp. 2 (49 to 70 kg), ADG increased (linear, = 0.021; quadratic, = 0.042) as the SID Val:Lys ratio increased. G:F improved (linear, = 0.039) and serum urea nitrogen (SUN) decreased (linear, = 0.021; quadratic, = 0.024) with an increased SID Val:Lys ratio. The SID Val:Lys ratios to maximize ADG as well as to minimize SUN levels were 0.67 and 0.65, respectively, using a linear broken-line model and 0.72 and 0.71, respectively, using a quadratic model. In Exp. 3 (71 to 92 kg), ADG increased (linear, = 0.007; quadratic, = 0.022) and SUN decreased (linear, = 0.011; quadratic, = 0.034) as the dietary SID Val:Lys ratio increased. The SID Val:Lys ratios to maximize ADG as well as to minimize SUN levels were 0.67 and 0.67, respectively, using a linear broken-line model and 0.72 and 0.74, respectively, using a quadratic model. In Exp. 4 (94 to 119 kg), ADG increased (linear, = 0.041) and G:F was improved (linear, = 0.004; quadratic, = 0.005) as the dietary SID Val:Lys ratio increased. The SID Val:Lys ratio to maximize G:F was 0.68 using a linear broken-line model and 0.72 using a quadratic model. Carcass traits and muscle quality were not influenced by SID Val:Lys ratio. In conclusion, the dietary SID Val:Lys ratios required for 26- to 46-, 49- to 70-, 71- to 92-, and 94- to 119-kg pigs were estimated to be 0.62, 0.66, 0.67, and 0.68, respectively, using a linear broken-line model and 0.71, 0.72, 0.73, and 0.72, respectively, using a quadratic model.

RESUMO

This study investigated the effects of various standardized ileal digestible (SID) Trp to Lys ratios on the performance and carcass characteristics of late finishing gilts receiving low-CP (9.6%) diets supplemented with crystalline AA. Ninety gilts (89.1 ± 5.1 kg) were used in a dose-response study conducted for 35 d. Crystalline Trp (0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, or 0.6 g/kg) was added to a corn-wheat bran basal diet providing SID Trp to Lys ratios of 0.12, 0.15, 0.18, 0.21, or 0.24. Each diet was fed to 6 pens of pigs with 3 gilts per pen. At the end of the experiment, 30 gilts (1 pig per pen) were slaughtered to evaluate carcass traits and meat quality (BW = 121 kg). Increasing the SID Trp to Lys ratio increased ADG (linear and quadratic effect, < 0.05) and also improved G:F (linear and quadratic effect, < 0.05). Serum urea nitrogen (SUN) decreased as the SID Trp to Lys ratio increased (linear and quadratic effects, < 0.05). A quadratic effect of L* light and marbling in the longissimus dorsi was observed as the dietary SID Trp to Lys ratio increased ( < 0.05). Increasing the SID Trp to Lys ratio increased the level of serum GH (quadratic effect, < 0.05) and also increased the level of serum IGF-1 (linear and quadratic effect, < 0.05). Increasing the SID Trp to Lys ratio increased the protein abundance of the muscular AA transporter of sodium-coupled neutral amino acid transporter 2 (SNAT2) in the longissimus dorsi muscle (linear and quadratic effect, < 0.05). The optimum SID Trp to Lys ratios to maximize ADG and G:F as well as to minimize SUN levels were 0.16, 0.17, and 0.16 using a linear-breakpoint model and 0.20, 0.20, and 0.20 using a quadratic model. Tryptophan could influence serum GH and IGF-1 secretion and protein abundance of the muscular AA transporter of SNAT2 in the longissimus dorsi muscle in late finishing gilts fed low-protein diets.

RESUMO

A total of 105 patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (IDCM) underwent Holter monitoring. The prevalence of arrhythmias was as follows: ventricular premature beats (VPB) 100%, including complex VPB 58.1%, short runs of ventricular tachycardia (VT) 25.7%, A-VB or BBB 46.7%, atrial arrhythmias 38.1%, sinus node dysfunction 6.6%, ST-T change 38.1%. The incidence of ventricular arrhythmia (VA) was not related to severity of cardiac dysfunction (NYHA), duration of illness and sex. The most common arrhythmia was VA, the second one was heart block and atrial arrhythmia. Serum norepinephrine and epinephrine levels were 743.4 +/- 252.5 and 688.0 +/- 452.4 pg/ml, respectively, which were higher than those in control group (P < 0.01). Isoproterenol sensitivity test (ICD25) 8.43 +/- 11.21 micrograms, was also much higher than that in control group (P < 0.01). Average H-V interval was 69.4 +/- 13.3 msec in HBE. Eight patients died. Two died of congestive heart failure (class II-IV), and six cases were diagnosed as sudden cardiac death resulting from VT and VF.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the expression of p120ctn in human lung squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma and its clinicopathologic significance. The expression of p120ctn in tumors and adjacent normal lung tissues from 143 patients was examined by immunohistochemistry and Western blot. Expression of p120ctn occurs mainly in the cell membrane of normal bronchial mucosa. Abnormal expression of p120ctn, including cytoplasmic and reduced membranous expression, was found in 114 of 143 specimens (79.7%) and was significantly associated with poor differentiation, high TNM stage, and lymph node metastasis (P<0.05 for each) but not with histologic subtype. The Kaplan-Meier survival test revealed that abnormal expression of p120ctn was related to poor survival (P<0.001). A Cox regression analysis revealed that abnormal p120ctn expression was an independent factor in predicting patient survival (P=0.024). Compared with that in normal lung tissues, membranous protein level was lower in tumors (P=0.003). Abnormal expression of p120ctn is associated with tumor progression and poor prognosis in lung squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. Reduced expression or even the absence of p120ctn isoform 1 and 3 in tumor cell membranes may be responsible for the abnormal expression of p120ctn that has been found in lung cancer.

RESUMO

Nematode infection of human beings or laboratory animals leads to markedly increased levels of circulating IgE, most of which is not specific to worm antigens. This phenomenon is known to be interleukin-4-dependent, but little is known about the mechanism of activation of the response. In an attempt to elucidate this mechanism, we have used a reductive approach with worm products rather than infections. In a previous article we showed that injection of the body fluid of the nematode Ascaris yields a marked increase in circulating IgE. In this study we demonstrate that the body fluid contains a B-cell mitogen. Incubation with purified splenic B cells with 50 micrograms/ml body fluid yields marked proliferation of B cells, as measured by tritiated thymidine uptake. Similarly, Ascaris body fluid stimulates G0 B cells to enter the cell cycle. T cells are unaffected by the mitogen, and the response is dependent on viable accessory cells. Contamination of Ascaris body fluid or reagents by bacterial lipopolysaccharide has been ruled out as a source of artefactual data. A model is proposed, which suggests that the B-cell mitogen in Ascaris body fluid stimulates polyclonal B-cell activity and that other nematode factors either stimulate the release of interleukin-4 or act in an interleukin-4-like manner to cause class switch to IgE.

RESUMO

An EM algorithm procedure is presented for the maximum-likelihood joint estimation of immigration and mating system parameters of mixed-mating system models for gymnosperms. In addition to accommodating multiallelic and multilocus data in mature populations and pollen pools, the EM estimates are insensitive to allelic frequency changes in foreign population and may approach closer to global maximum-likelihood estimates with each iteration, regardless of initial starting values. Estimates of rates of selfing (S), outcrossing (Ô), and immigration (Î) derived from the model are bounded strictly within the natural biological range (i.e., 0 ≤ Ô + Î ≤ 1; S + Ô + Î = 1).

RESUMO

Two-cell-stage embryos were flushed from the oviducts on Day 2. Zygotes were collected from oviducts on Day 1 (Fertilization In Situ, ISF) or derived from fertilization in vitro (IVF). 2-cell embryos had a high rate of blastocyst development to each embryo concentration from 1 embryo/microliter to 1 embryo/1000 microliters. The zygotes produced by either ISF or IVF were adversely affected by reducing the embryo concentration over this range (P < 0.001), with approximately 82.5% of ISF zygotes developing to blastocysts at highest concentration but only 22.3% at the lowest. For IVF zygotes the corresponding results were 46.3% and 5.2%. The number of cells in each blastocyst from 2-cell embryos was significantly higher than that from ISF and IVF group. The media supplementing Platelet-activating factor (PAF) caused a significant increase in the rate of blastocyst development of IVF zygotes at embryo concentration of 1 embryo/10 microliters (10 ng/ml) and 1 embryo/100 microliters (100 ng/ml). Insulin-like growth factor (IGF) (10 ng/ml) also stimulated development of IVF zygotes when they were cultured at the concentration of 1 embryo/10 microliters. Epidermal growth factor (EGF) was no effect over range of 1-1000 ng/ml to embryo development. The results show that factors necessary for normal embryo development are diluted to suboptimal levels during culture at low embryo concentration. The PAF, IGF-I partially compensate the effects of low embryo concentration during culture and play important roles as autocrine embryotrophic factors.

RESUMO

The extract from an edible vine, Pueraria lobata, has long been used in China to lessen alcohol intoxication. We have previously shown that daidzin, one of the major components from this plant extract, is efficacious in lowering blood alcohol levels and shortens sleep time induced by alcohol ingestion. This study was conducted to test the antidipsotropic effect of daidzin and two other major isoflavonoids, daidzein and puerarin, from Pueraria lobata administered by the oral route. An alcohol-preferring rat model, the selectively-bred P line of rats, was used for the study. All three isoflavonoid compounds were effective in suppressing voluntary alcohol consumption by the P rats. When given orally to P rats at a dose of 100 mg/kg/day, daidzein, daidzin, and puerarin decreased ethanol intake by 75%, 50%, and 40%, respectively. The decrease in alcohol consumption was accompanied by an increase in water intake, so that the total fluid volume consumed daily remained unchanged. The effects of these isoflavonoid compounds on alcohol and water intake were reversible. Suppression of alcohol consumption was evident after 1 day of administration and became maximal after 2 days. Similarly, alcohol preference returned to baseline levels 2 days after discontinuation of the isoflavonoids. Rats receiving the herbal extracts ate the same amounts of food as control animals, and they gained weight normally during the experiments. When administered orally, none of these compounds affected the activities of liver alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase. Therefore, the reversal of alcohol preference produced by these compounds may be mediated via the CNS. Data demonstrate that isoflavonoid compounds extracted from Pueraria lobata is effective in suppressing the appetite for alcohol when taken orally, raising the possibility that other constituents of edible plants may exert similar and more potent actions.
