Advances in the development of anti-tumour drugs and related technologies have resulted in a significant increase in the number of cancer survivors. However, the incidence of chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity (CIC) has been rising continuously, threatening their long-term survival. The integration of nanotechnology and biomedicine has brought about an unprecedented technological revolution and has promoted the progress of anti-tumour therapy. In this review, we summarised the possible mechanisms of CIC, evaluated the role of nanoparticles (including liposomes, polymeric micelles, dendrimers, and hydrogels) as drug carriers in preventing cardiotoxicity and proposed five advantages of nanotechnology in reducing cardiotoxicity: Liposomes cannot easily penetrate the heart's endothelial barrier; optimized delivery strategies reduce distribution in important organs, such as the heart; targeting the tumour microenvironment and niche; stimulus-responsive polymer nano-drug carriers rapidly iterate; better economic benefits were obtained. Nanoparticles can effectively deliver chemotherapeutic drugs to tumour tissues, while reducing the toxicity to heart tissues, and break through the dilemma of existing chemotherapy to a certain extent. It is important to explore the interactions between the physicochemical properties of nanoparticles and optimize the highly specific tumour targeting strategy in the future.

Cardiac arrhythmia occurs frequently worldwide, and in severe cases can be fatal. Mitochondria are the power plants of cardiomyocytes. In recent studies, mitochondria under certain stimuli produced excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS), which affect the normal function of cardiomyocytes through ion channels and related proteins. Mitochondrial oxidative stress (MOS) plays a key role in diseases with multifactorial etiopathogenesis, such as arrhythmia; MOS can lead to arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia. This review discusses the mechanisms of arrhythmias caused by MOS, particularly of ROS produced by mitochondria. MOS can cause arrhythmias by affecting the activities of Ca2+-related proteins, the mitochondrial permeability transition pore protein, connexin 43, hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated potassium channel 4, and ion channels. Based on these mechanisms, we discuss possible new treatments for arrhythmia. Targeted treatments focusing on mitochondria may reduce the progression of arrhythmias, as well as the occurrence of severe arrhythmias, and may be effective for personalized disease prevention.

The foods of plants provide the rich nutrition and have protective function in human diseases, including cancers. Genistein is a major isoflavone constituent in soybeans, which has an anti-cancer role in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Nevertheless, the mechanism underlying the anti-cancer function of genistein in NSCLC remains largely unknown. NSCLC cells (H292 and A549) were exposed to genistein. Circular RNA hsa_circ_0031250 (circ_0031250), microRNA (miR)-873-5p and forkhead box M1 (FOXM1) abundances were examined via quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting. The function of genistein, circ_0031250, miR-873-5p, and FOXM1 on NSCLC progression was investigated via Cell Counting Kit-8, colony formation, transwell well, wound healing, flow cytometry, Western blotting and xenograft model. The target relationship was analyzed by dual-luciferase reporter analysis and RNA immunoprecipitation. Results showed that genistein inhibited NSCLC cell viability in dose-time-dependent patterns. circ_0031250 abundance was elevated in NSCLC samples and cell lines, and it was reduced via genistein exposure. circ_0031250 knockdown aggravated genistein-caused suppression of cell proliferation, migration and invasion and elevation of apoptosis. miR-873-5p expression was decreased in NSCLC samples and cells. miR-873-5p was targeted via circ_0031250, and miR-873-5p knockdown attenuated the influence of circ_0031250 silence on NSCLC progression in the presence of genistein. FOXM1 was regulated via circ_0031250/miR-873-5p axis. miR-873-5p constrained cell proliferation, migration and invasion and increased apoptosis via regulating FOXM1 in genistein-treated cells. circ_0031250 knockdown enhanced the inhibitive function of genistein on NSCLC cell growth in xenograft model. Collectively, genistein repressed NSCLC progression by modulating circ_0031250/miR-873-5p/FOXM1 axis.

Recently, several studies have demonstrated that heart failure (HF) may increase the risk of incident cancer. However, this association has not been statistically and systematically verified by any comprehensive pooled analyses. We performed a meta-analysis on cancer morbidity and co-mortality of adults with HF in a large sample size to explore the relationship between HF and the risk of developing cancer. From inception to April 2019, we searched PubMed and EMBASE for published relevant articles on patients with HF diagnosed with cancer afterwards, with reported outcomes of morbidity and mortality. Two investigators independently reviewed these included studies. Study data were independently extracted using predefined data extraction forms. Random and fixed-effects models were fit for the study duration. This analysis consisted of 4 cohort studies comprising 5,004,251 participants. The relative risk (RR) for incident cancer was 1.22 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.13-1.33) indicating that patients with HF may have a higher risk of developing cancer. The pooled RR of co-mortality was 2.03 (95% CI, 1.13-3.65), indicating that HF associated with cancer increases the risk of mortality. In this meta-analysis and systematic review, our results demonstrated that heart failure may increase the risk of incident cancer and that HF associated with cancer increases the risk of mortality.

Currently, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which can lead to severe respiratory failure and death, is now a global pandemic with no specific anti-viral drugs or vaccines. However, It is worth noting that traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), especially Chinese herbal medicine (CHM), has been widely applied in mainland China since outbreak, bringing new hope for the prevention and control of COVID-19. A comprehensive literature searching was conducted in 7 electronic databases from their inception up to June 21, 2020 to evaluate the efficacy and safety of CHM for COVID-19. Eighteen randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 2275 patients were enrolled. Most of CHMs were originated from classical Chinese herbal formulas. Liquoric Root (Gancao, Radix Glycyrrhizae), Baical Skullcap Root (Huangqin, Radix Scutellariae Baicalensis), Pinellia Rhizome (Banxia, Rhizoma Pinelliae Tematae), Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao, Fructus Forsythiae Suspensae), and Bitter Apricot Seed (Kuxingren, Semen Armeniacae Amarum) were most frequently used Chinese herbs. The most commonly used dosage formulation was decoction. Our meta-analyses found that comparing CHM group and conventional western medicine group, CHM group has improvements in several clinical parameters including lung CT, clinical cure rate, ranging from mild to critical cases, length of hospital stay, total score of clinical symptoms, fever reduction time, symptom score of fever, number of cough reduction cases, symptom score of cough, number of fatigue reduction cases, symptom score of fatigue, disappearing time of fatigue, TCM syndrome, viral nucleic acid testing, and inflammatory biomarkers (C-reactive protein). Besides, no severe adverse effects was identified by CHM. CHM, especially classical Chinese herbal formulas, could be used as potential candidates for COVID-19 in this battle.

BACKGROUND: Although previous clinical randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have tested the effect of a variety of cardioprotective agents on cancer therapy-induced cardiotoxicity, the number of included patients was limited, and the results remained controversial. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the preventive or therapeutic effects of cardioprotective agents on heart failure (HF) caused by cardiotoxicity induced by cancer therapy. METHODS: We included trials of the following cardioprotective drugs: Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers, beta-blockers, aldosterone antagonists and stains. We extracted the relevant information with predefined data extraction forms, and assessed the risk of bias in randomized controlled trials with the Cochrane risk of bias tool. The primary outcome was the left ventricular ejection fraction of patients after chemotherapy. We used the random-effects model to carry out pair-wise meta-analysis, and then carry out the random-effects network meta-analysis within the Bayesian framework. RESULTS: Twenty-two relevant RCTs, including 1 916 patients (79.6 % women) with a mean age of 48.4 years, were included. Based on the evaluation of all drug species from 20 studies (26 comparisons), the analysis found that 4 therapies, aldosterone antagonists (MD, 12.78 [95 % CI, 2.87-22.69] and MD, 13.75 [95 % CI, 2.21-25.30]), ACEIs (MD, 6.79 [95 % CI, 2.11-11.48] and MD, 7.76 [95 % CI, 2.64-12.88]), statin (MD, 8.35 [95 % CI, 1.11-15.59]), and beta-blockers (MD, 4.00 [95 % CI, 0.87-7.14]), had a higher efficacy than placebo and/or control, suggesting an LVEF protective effect of cardioprotective therapy. In the analysis classified by single drug or drug combination, based on 22 studies (31 comparisons), spironolactone (MD, 12.77 [95 % CI, 1.76-23.79] and MD, 14.62 [95 % CI, 1.70-27.55]), a combination of candesartan and carvedilol (MD, 12.40 [95 % CI, 0.99-23.81]), enalapril (MD, 7.35 [95 % CI, 1.16-13.54] and MD, 9.20 [95 % CI, 2.61-15.79]), and statin (MD, 8.36 [95 % CI, 0.36-16.36]) showed significant benefits in protecting left ventricular (LV) systolic function compared with the placebo and/or control. CONCLUSION: When classified according to drug type, aldosterone antagonists, ACEIs, statins, and beta-blockers could substantially improve the LV systolic function. In the analysis classified by single drug or drug combination, spironolactone, enalapril, and statin have a significant cardioprotective effect. However, ARBs have no cardioprotective effect and fail to improve the LVEF.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac injury is now a common complication of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), but it remains unclear whether cardiac injury-related biomarkers can be independent predictors of mortality and severe disease development or intensive care unit (ICU) admission. METHODS: Two investigators searched the PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang, MedRxiv, and ChinaXiv databases for articles published through March 30, 2020. Retrospective studies assessing the relationship between the prognosis of COVID-19 patients and levels of troponin I (TnI) and other cardiac injury biomarkers (creatine kinase [CK], CK myocardial band [CK-MB], lactate dehydrogenase [LDH], and interleukin-6 [IL-6]) were included. The data were extracted independently by two investigators. RESULTS: The analysis included 23 studies with 4631 total individuals. The proportions of severe disease, ICU admission, or death among patients with non-elevated TnI (or troponin T [TnT]), and those with elevated TnI (or TnT) were 12.0% and 64.5%, 11.8% and 56.0%, and 8.2% and. 59.3%, respectively. Patients with elevated TnI levels had significantly higher risks of severe disease, ICU admission, and death (RR 5.57, 95% CI 3.04 to 10.22, P < 0.001; RR 6.20, 95% CI 2.52 to 15.29, P < 0.001; RR 5.64, 95% CI 2.69 to 11.83, P < 0.001). Patients with an elevated CK level were at significantly increased risk of severe disease or ICU admission (RR 1.98, 95% CI 1.50 to 2.61, P < 0.001). Patients with elevated CK-MB levels were at a higher risk of developing severe disease or requiring ICU admission (RR 3.24, 95% CI 1.66 to 6.34, P = 0.001). Patients with newly occurring arrhythmias were at higher risk of developing severe disease or requiring ICU admission (RR 13.09, 95% CI 7.00 to 24.47, P < 0.001). An elevated IL-6 level was associated with a higher risk of developing severe disease, requiring ICU admission, or death. CONCLUSIONS: COVID-19 patients with elevated TnI levels are at significantly higher risk of severe disease, ICU admission, and death. Elevated CK, CK-MB, LDH, and IL-6 levels and emerging arrhythmia are associated with the development of severe disease and need for ICU admission, and the mortality is significantly higher in patients with elevated LDH and IL-6 levels.

The abnormal expression of adipocyte enhancer binding protein 1 (AEBP1) has been implicated in the carcinogenesis and progression of various types of human tumors. However, the role of AEBP1 in colon adenocarcinoma (COAD) remains largely unelucidated. In this study, we explored the clinical significance and biological function of AEBP1 in COAD. We observed that AEBP1 was overexpressed in COAD tissues and cells and that the expression of AEBP1 was correlated with tumor size, the level of histologic differentiation, lymph node metastasis, and cancer stage in COAD patients. In addition, univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses revealed that high AEBP1 expression suggested poor prognosis in COAD. Moreover, AEBP1 silencing suppressed COAD cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, whereas the upregulation of AEBP1 promoted these behaviors. Additionally, mechanistic studies further demonstrated that AEBP1 promoted COAD cell proliferation, migration, and invasion by upregulating the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-2, vimentin, and TWIST whereas downregulating that of E-cadherin through the nuclear factor-κB pathway. Collectively, these data indicated that AEBP1 may be a new prognostic factor and a potential gene therapy target in COAD.

Chinese herbal medicine has been increasingly used for patients with postmenopausal hypertension in China. A comprehensive literature search was performed in 7 electronic databases from their inception up to December 17, 2017 to examine the efficacy and safety of Chinese herbal medicine for postmenopausal hypertension. Thirty-nine randomized controlled trials involving 3, 823 participants were included. Meta-analyses favored Chinese herbal medicine plus antihypertensive drugs on blood pressure, blood pressure variability, postmenopausal symptoms, quality of life, and hormone levels compared with antihypertensive drugs. No severe adverse effects were identified. Er-xian decoction was the most frequently prescribed herbal formula, while Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch. was the most commonly used single herb. Chinese herbal medicine as complementary therapy maybe beneficial for postmenopausal hypertension. However, the effectiveness and safety of the decoction are still uncertain due to methodological shortcomings. Well-conducted trials are warranted to resolve the issue.

Background: The therapeutic effects of vitamin D supplementation on Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) aggravation remain controversial and inconclusive. To probe into this contentious issue, we performed the present meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Methods: Literature published up to June 2023 was retrieved from Cochrane Library, PubMed, Web of Science and Embase. RCTs assessing mortality, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, mechanical ventilation (MV), length of hospitalization (LOH), and inflammatory markers containing C-reactive protein (CRP), D-dimer, interleukin-6 (IL-6), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were included. 19 RCTs were involved in the analysis and were conducted subgroup analyses on the baseline COVID-19 severity and vitamin D administration. Results: In the severity subgroup, statistically significant effects in moderate to severe group were observed in ICU admission (OR 0.43, 95% CI 0.23, 0.80; p = 0.008), MV (OR 0.44, 95% CI 0.27, 0.72; p = 0.001) and LOH (SMD -0.49, 95% CI -0.92, -0.06; p = 0.027). In the administration subgroup, effects of ICU admission (OR 0.39, 95% CI 0.16, 0.97; p = 0.044), MV (OR 0.18, 95% CI 0.07, 0.46; p = 0.000) and LOH (SMD -0.50, 95% CI -0.96, -0.04; p = 0.034) were more pronounced in patients supplied with multiple-dose vitamin D than single-dose. Although the result of mortality showed no statistically significant effect, it indicated a reduced trend (OR 0.87, 95% CI 0.63, 1.12; p > 0.05). The results of inflammatory markers reached no statistical differences. Conclusion: This meta-analysis revealed that moderate to severe COVID-19 patients supplied with multiple doses of vitamin D were less apt to need ICU admission, mechanical ventilation and have shorter hospital stays.

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), a common subtype of hemorrhagic stroke, often causes severe disability or death. ICH induces adverse events that might lead to secondary brain injury (SBI), and there is currently a lack of specific effective treatment strategies. To provide a new direction for SBI treatment post-ICH, the systematic review discussed how thrombin impacts secondary injury after ICH through several potentially deleterious or protective mechanisms. We included 39 studies and evaluated them using SYRCLE's ROB tool. Subsequently, we explored the potential molecular mechanisms of thrombin-mediated effects on SBI post-ICH in terms of inflammation, iron deposition, autophagy, and angiogenesis. Furthermore, we described the effects of thrombin in endothelial cells, astrocytes, pericytes, microglia, and neurons, as well as the harmful and beneficial effects of high and low thrombin concentrations on ICH. Finally, we concluded the current research status of thrombin therapy for ICH, which will provide a basis for the future clinical application of thrombin in the treatment of ICH.

Importance: Prehypertension increases the risk of developing hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases. Early and effective intervention for patients with prehypertension is highly important. Objective: To assess the efficacy of Tai Chi vs aerobic exercise in patients with prehypertension. Design, Setting, and Participants: This prospective, single-blinded randomized clinical trial was conducted between July 25, 2019, and January 24, 2022, at 2 tertiary public hospitals in China. Participants included 342 adults aged 18 to 65 years with prehypertension, defined as systolic blood pressure (SBP) of 120 to 139 mm Hg and/or diastolic BP (DBP) of 80 to 89 mm Hg. Interventions: Participants were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to a Tai Chi group (n = 173) or an aerobic exercise group (n = 169). Both groups performed four 60-minute supervised sessions per week for 12 months. Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary outcome was SBP at 12 months obtained in the office setting. Secondary outcomes included SBP at 6 months and DBP at 6 and 12 months obtained in the office setting and 24-hour ambulatory BP at 12 months. Results: Of the 1189 patients screened, 342 (mean [SD] age, 49.3 [11.9] years; 166 men [48.5%] and 176 women [51.5%]) were randomized to 1 of 2 intervention groups: 173 to Tai Chi and 169 to aerobic exercise. At 12 months, the change in office SBP was significantly different between groups by -2.40 (95% CI, -4.39 to -0.41) mm Hg (P = .02), with a mean (SD) change of -7.01 (10.12) mm Hg in the Tai Chi group vs -4.61 (8.47) mm Hg in the aerobic exercise group. The analysis of office SBP at 6 months yielded similar results (-2.31 [95% CI, -3.94 to -0.67] mm Hg; P = .006). Additionally, 24-hour ambulatory SBP (-2.16 [95% CI, -3.84 to -0.47] mm Hg; P = .01) and nighttime ambulatory SBP (-4.08 [95% CI, -6.59 to -1.57] mm Hg; P = .002) were significantly reduced in the Tai Chi group compared with the aerobic exercise group. Conclusions and Relevance: In this study including patients with prehypertension, a 12-month Tai Chi intervention was more effective than aerobic exercise in reducing SBP. These findings suggest that Tai Chi may help promote the prevention of cardiovascular disease in populations with prehypertension. Acute altitude reaction is a stress response of organism to special altitude environmental factors such as hypoxia, low pressure, cold, dry and strong ultraviolet. As it is the most incident disease in high altitude areas, its prevention remains a problem to be solved. In China, the traditional Chinese (Tibetan) medicines have been recognized as an effective means of preventing and treating acute altitude sicknesses. Some single-recipe or compound traditional Chinese (Tibetan) medicines have been proved to be effective for acute altitude sicknesses. In this article, we will describe traditional Chinese (Tibetan) medicines of different types with efficacy in prevention and treatment of altitude sicknesses.

Background: Multiple observational studies have discovered a substantial link between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and ventricular dysfunction. However, conventional observational studies are vulnerable to causal reversal and confounding, making it challenging to infer the causes of effects and their direction. Methods: With the help of a bidirectional, two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study, we assessed the potential causality between OSA and left and right ventricular (LV, RV) structure and function. We conducted our analysis utilizing summary data from genome-wide association studies of OSA (16,761 cases and 201,194 controls) in the FinnGen Study, as well as LV (36,041 participants) and RV (29,506 participants) in the UK Biobank cardiovascular magnetic resonance research. The inverse variance weighted (IVW) was selected as the main strategy, with the MR-Egger and weighted median methods serving as supplements. Other methods were employed as sensitivity analysis tools to look at heterogeneity and pleiotropy, including MR-Egger intercept, Cochran Q statistic, MR-PRESSO, and leave-one-out analysis. Results: In the primary IVW analysis, genetically predicted OSA was strongly causative on LV end-diastolic volume (ß = 0.114, 95% CI = 0.034-0.194, p = 0.006) and LV stroke volume (ß = 0.111, 95% CI = 0.031-0.191, p = 0.007), and genetically predicted LV ejection fraction was linked to an increased risk of OSA (OR = 1.161, 95% CI = 1.029-1.309, p = 0.015). However, there was no connection found between OSA and any RV parameters. Conclusion: Our genetic analysis raises a potential causative link between OSA and ventricular structure and function, which may improve the knowledge of OSA as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease by demonstrating a direct impact on cardiac structure and function.

Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) is a new technology that can be used to explore molecular changes in complex cell clusters at the single-cell level. Single-cell spatial transcriptomic technology complements the cell-space location information lost during single-cell sequencing. Coronary artery disease is an important cardiovascular disease with high mortality rates. Many studies have explored the physiological development and pathological changes in coronary arteries from the perspective of single cells using single-cell spatial transcriptomic technology. This article reviews the molecular mechanisms underlying coronary artery development and diseases as revealed by scRNA-seq combined with spatial transcriptomic technology. Based on these mechanisms, we discuss the possible new treatments for coronary diseases.

Introduction: Preventing ischemia-reperfusion injury is the main direction of myocardial infarction treatment in the convalescent stage. Some studies have suggested that saponins in Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) preparations can protect the myocardium by various mechanisms. Our meta-analysis aims to evaluate the efficacy of TCM saponins in treating myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MIRI) and to summarize the potential molecular mechanisms further. Methods: We conducted a literature search in six electronic databases [Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Sinomed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI)] until October 2022. Results: Seventeen eligible studies included 386 animals (254 received saponins and 132 received vehicles). The random effect model is used to calculate the combined effect. The effect size is expressed as the weighted average difference (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Compared with placebo, saponins preconditioning reduced infarct size after MIRI significantly (WMD: -3.60,95% CI: -4.45 to -2.74, P < 0.01, I2: 84.7%, P < 0.001), and significantly increased EF (WMD: 3.119, 95% CI: 2.165 to 4.082, P < 0.01, I2: 82.9%, P < 0.0 L) and FS (WMD: 3.157, 95% CI: 2.218 to 4.097, P < 0.001, I2: 81.3%, P < 0.001). Discussion: The results show that the pre-administration of saponins from TCM has a significant protective effect on MIRI in preclinical studies, which provides an application prospect for developing anti-MIRI drugs with high efficiency and low toxicity.

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a stroke subtype characterized by non-traumatic rupture of blood vessels in the brain, resulting in blood pooling in the brain parenchyma. Despite its lower incidence than ischemic stroke, ICH remains a significant contributor to stroke-related mortality, and most survivors experience poor outcomes that significantly impact their quality of life. ICH has been accompanied by various complex pathological damage, including mechanical damage of brain tissue, hematoma mass effect, and then leads to inflammatory response, thrombin activation, erythrocyte lysis, excitatory amino acid toxicity, complement activation, and other pathological changes. Accumulating evidence has demonstrated that activation of complement cascade occurs in the early stage of brain injury, and the excessive complement activation after ICH will affect the occurrence of secondary brain injury (SBI) through multiple complex pathological processes, aggravating brain edema, and pathological brain injury. Therefore, the review summarized the pathological mechanisms of brain injury after ICH, specifically the complement role in ICH, and its related pathological mechanisms, to comprehensively understand the specific mechanism of different complements at different stages after ICH. Furthermore, we systematically reviewed the current state of complement-targeted therapies for ICH, providing a reference and basis for future clinical transformation of complement-targeted therapy for ICH.

A variety of immune cell subsets occupy different niches in the cardiovascular system, causing changes in the structure and function of the heart and vascular system, and driving the progress of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). The immune cells infiltrating the injury site are highly diverse and integrate into a broad dynamic immune network that controls the dynamic changes of CVDs. Due to technical limitations, the effects and molecular mechanisms of these dynamic immune networks on CVDs have not been fully revealed. With recent advances in single-cell technologies such as single-cell RNA sequencing, systematic interrogation of the immune cell subsets is feasible and will provide insights into the way we understand the integrative behavior of immune populations. We no longer lightly ignore the role of individual cells, especially certain highly heterogeneous or rare subpopulations. We summarize the phenotypic diversity of immune cell subsets and their significance in three CVDs of atherosclerosis, myocardial ischemia and heart failure. We believe that such a review could enhance our understanding of how immune heterogeneity drives the progression of CVDs, help to elucidate the regulatory roles of immune cell subsets in disease, and thus guide the development of new immunotherapies.

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVDs) are the most important diseases that endanger people's health, leading to high morbidity and mortality worldwide. In addition, various thrombotic events secondary to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases need must be considered seriously. Therefore, the development of novel anti-platelet drugs with high efficiency, and fewer adverse effects has become a research focus for preventing of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Blood-activation and stasis-removal from circulation have been widely considered as principles for treating syndromes related to CVDs. Blood-activating Chinese (BAC botanical drugs, as members of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), have shown to improve hemodynamics and hemorheology, and inhibit thrombosis and atherosclerosis. Modern medical research has identified that a combination of BAC botanical drugs and anti-platelet drugs, such as aspirin or clopidogrel, not only enhances the anti-platelet effects, but also reduces the risk of bleeding and protects the vascular endothelium. The anti-platelet mechanism of Blood-activating Chinese (BAC) botanical drugs and their compounds is not clear; therefore, their potential targets need to be explored. With the continuous development of bioinformatics and "omics" technology, some unconventional applications of BAC botanical drugs have been discovered. In this review, we will focus on the related targets and signaling pathways of anti-atherosclerotic treatments involving a combination of BAC botanical drugs and anti-platelet drugs reported in recent years.
